Graves (2016–…): Season 2, Episode 9 - Not All Who Wander Are Lost - full transcript

Graves rights mistakes from his past. Margaret reconnects with her relatives. Olivia purchases a house and receives an unexpected visit. Isaiah has doubts, Jeremy has a revelation, and Samantha takes the spotlight.

Previously on Graves...

Bailey Todd, manager,
music producer out of New York.

A friend of mine at XM gave me
a link to one of your songs.

The gal that I'm related to
is named Maggie Lynn Davis,

and back in the day
we called her Peg,

back when Her Majesty
would actually take our calls.

A large percentage of New Mexicans
already think you're a phony.

- So you think I'm a phony, too ?
- No, I didn't say that.

- I wanna put you on Jeremy's show.
- Oh, Katie, slow down. Please.

He's knocking, universe.

- What's up ?
- I'm sorry, brother.

So our good friend Chuy, the triggerman
in Arturo Del Rey's death,

agreed to turn State's evidence
in exchange for immunity.

Del Rey was a son of Mexico's
biggest drug lord, El Turon.

You need to move out of here.

Ninety megaton neutron warhead
with my fucking name on it.

I can't ignore it, not anymore.

Now you stay alive long enough to yell,
Richard, at the top of your lungs.

Chapter 22
REVOLUTION

There are those who will judge me
for what I am about to do.

However I have no choice.

Graves' Nuclear Mastermind

At the top of my lungs, Lord.

At the top of my lungs.

- Hello, this is Bonnie.
- Bonnie ?

It's me, Peg.

GRAVES
Season 2, episode 9

Where's Maggie ?
That's the question of the hour

from incumbent senator Jerry North.

Margaret Graves has not been
seen on the campaign trail

since what North is calling her
"implosion" during their debate...

Richard, please try and be back
for an early dinner.

Remember Bonnie
and her family are coming.

Are you sure about this, Mags ?
That woman is on Jerry North's payroll.

Listen, honey, this is not about
the campaign. This is for me.

- For you ?
- For me.

- Of course I'll be here, sweetheart.
- All right. Thank you.

- Sir ?
- Isaiah ?

Hello, ma'am.

- Oh, kid.
- Hey !

- I need to borrow your key.
- To what ?

To your heart, jackass.
Your car.

- Where are you driving off to, sir ?
- Key ?

I just have to ask, when is
the last time you drove a car ?

- I'll walk you out, sir.
- Okay.

Christopher, I thought I told you
not to come here today.

Oh, my mistake. I've just decided
to remove negative qualifiers

from everything you say,
but fear not, Margaret,

I am here because I am so happy
about what you're doing today.

- Having that Clegg woman over.
- Listen to me very carefully.

What is happening today
here in my home, it's personal.

It's not part of some
campaign strategy.

- Of course it's not.
- I mean it, Christopher.

I will be at the office, but remember,
today, just... just be yourself, hmm ?

So this is it. I think Short Stuff's
really gonna love it, don't you ?

Oh, my God. You really need
to name your baby.

Okay. You are zero fun today.

No, it's amazing that
you bought a house.

I'm just kind of worried about you
living on your own, that's all.

Well, don't be. I need another
person worrying on me to fail

like I need another
dick pic from Justin Bieber.

Welcome back to The Truth
with Jeremy Graves

and special guest Governor John Kasich.

In 2016, 14% of organ donors
died as a result of car accidents,

like, there's a real potential
shortage of organ donors

as a result of these self-driving cars
everybody's excited about,

and, I don't know, there's just
not gonna be enough stiffs.

- Stiffs ?
- Yeah.

Well, Jeremy, I don't know
if you're asking me

to figure out a way in which
we can have more car accidents

so we can have more organs. That's like
a joke. I hate to do this to you,

but I'm really... I'm done here.

All right.

And we'll be right back.

Get some help.

Doug, don't start, all right ?

The man who attempted to shoot
former president Graves

and wounded his assistant,
Isaiah Miller,

will be sentenced
in a Colorado courtroom today.

- Hi !
- Hey. Can I talk to you for a sec ?

Oh, of course, yeah. I wanna prep you.

The interview today with Jeremy
is going to be amazing.

First, do not forget,
this interview is about you,

a future leader
for the Republican party.

Also, if Jeremy asks you
about Treadwell,

you answer him, but then
tell him how thrilled you are

to be invited to be a keynote speaker
at the Lincoln Day Dinner.

But Katie, I wanted
to talk to you about something

that I've actually wanted
to mention ever since New York.

Oh, my God, you're nervous
about going on Jeremy's show today.

Hold on, I got you something.

- You bought me a suit ?
- I made an investment.

Gosh, Katie.
No, I can't do this.

This is what a president
looks like, Isaiah.

You put this on and you're gonna
carry yourself differently,

head higher, two inches
taller, presidential.

- No. Katie, stop. I said I can't.
- Jesus Christ, what ?

Okay. You are just... You're so...
You're controlling, okay ?

I feel like I'm dating my mother.
No, I...

I don't think that you and me...

It's not gonna work out.

And there's so many
amazing things, Katie...

Stop.

You insecure little shit.

Do you even know
what the hell you want ?

No, you don't, because you're
like some cartoon character

from the fucking '50s.
Hey, Dick Van Dyke called.

He wants his perfectly coiffed swoop
and bumbling, bullshit charm back.

God, was I wrong about you.
Good luck fucking up the interview.

You just gave up on your future.

You'll never be him, you know,
Richard Graves.

You don't have it in you.

Welcome, y'all. Oh, my God.

- I never thought I'd see the day.
- Bonnie.

- Give me a hug.
- Okay.

- I'm so glad you came.
- Yeah. Well, you call, I come.

That's what we do.
This is my daughter, Lacey.

- Hi, sweetheart.
- She's prettier on TV.

- Did you bring the whole town ?
- The whole family, darling.

Knick-knack, paddywack,
give the dog a bone. Boom !

Holy shit.

- It's been a long time, Lenny.
- Mr. President.

- What in the... How did...
- I made a call in to General Powell.

- He told me where to find you.
- Well, I'll be damned, Jesus.

I was hoping
I could bend your ear a bit.

- Oh, yeah. Yeah. Come on.
- All right. I'll follow you.

I've been researching that producer
that I told you about, Bailey Todd.

Oh, yeah. I heard it was her idea
that Beyoncé have twins. Genius.

Okay, well, not everything
that I've been reading is as positive.

I mean, she sort of owns her artists,
like literally owns them.

You should read this contract
that she sent me, it's intense.

Hey, good things are happening,
okay ? For both of us.

I've got this new house.

I've got a ton of new followers
on this mommy blog I just started.

Yeah, that's cool.
I don't know. I just feel like...

Let good things happen
for once, Sam.

I'm gonna go shopping
before the movers get here.

- Come with ?
- Oh, no, I can't.

I actually have to go to work,
but congrats on the new house, Liv.

Thanks, boo. You, too.

- Hello ?
- Ms. Graves, Special Agent Hill, FBI.

Agent Hill, hi.

There's been
an update in our investigation.

We wanted to let you know that Chuy
Ramirez died in custody last night

before his plea deal was finalized.
Without his testimony,

the FBI is closing its case
on Arturo Del Rey.

We will be notifying your counsel.

Was that a silent
primal scream ?

No. Yes.

Secret's safe with me.

Hey, buddy, great segment
with Governor Kasich.

Remember how I said
I would never lie to you ?

- No. But sure.
- Well, it's true.

The Kasich thing was a bust.
What happened ?

I mean, where's that acerbic prick
that America knows and loves ?

- Yeah. Look, Doug, actually...
- What is it, cancer ?

No. I don't have fucking cancer.
Actually, you make my point.

I don't know if I wanna be
America's favorite prick anymore.

- Oh, really ?
- Yes.

Well, look at this.
There's a direct positive correlation

between your anger level
and viewership.

Doug, have you been charting
my discontent ?

Yeah. Science is real, and so are you.

Now you got your father as
bullet-taking body-man coming.

You got to tear him apart.

I'm gonna buy you a porterhouse
tonight, bone in.

Pretty much home the past 30 years.

Well, you...
You've done well for yourself.

Nobody can take that away
from you, Peg.

Oh, that is where
we were gonna have dinner

until I saw you brought half
the state of Texas with you.

- It's wrong anyway. It's all wrong.
- Well, I can fix it.

Yeah, you need a lesson to remember
where you come from, hon,

about how we party, how we have fun,
and we act like we don't give a shit

because life's just too hard sometimes.

Come on, Peg, you remember how
we did at Sunday after church.

- A Clegger ?
- Fucking-A right.

I just... I had some questions
about some of the stuff in here.

It's all pretty standard.

Here's the deal. You get a say,
but I can't be your lawyer

and negotiate against myself.

Oh, no, no. I'm sorry. I didn't mean
to offend you, Bailey, I just...

Oh, you didn't offend me, babe.
It's all good. It's just business.

But you should talk to somebody
and work your shit out.

I got a band coming to play with you
and see if you all vibe.

- Cool ?
- Yeah. Totally.

How long you been here ?

I've been here ever since
Joanie passed.

Oh, I didn't know that.
I'm really sorry.

I just couldn't stay in that house
without her. It was too quiet.

- Still work in that missile silo ?
- Oh, yeah. Yeah.

I do a lot of maintenance
every few months.

Hard to believe, but they still have
my original technology down there.

Yeah ? So you like it, huh ? Working on
that big monster I ordered, you built.

Puts food on the table.

Sent three kids through college.

And fucked the world.

- You hungry ?
- Yeah.

You feeling good about this, bud ?

I've had a really tough day so far
but, hey, I know what you do here.

I know you're gonna go hard on me.
I won't take anything personally.

Why the fuck does
everyone around me

work so hard at enabling me
to be a complete asshole ?

Because they underestimate you.

About five minutes away, everyone.

- Hi, nugget. Mother.
- Hey.

When are we gonna talk about
that hoedown in the front yard ?

- We're having a family barbecue.
- Whose family ?

- Yours, sweetheart.
- Guilty of that particular crime.

Olivia, I would love for you
to meet my cousin Bonnie

and her daughter Lacey.
Guys, this is my daughter, Olivia.

Hello !

What the fuck, Lucinda ?
You actually crawled across the bar

to snoop through my shit ?

I've been fucked three times
in my life, contractually,

when I've asked for it,

and too many times when I didn't
even know it was happening.

Okay, why would you wanna help me ?

Because I was you.

Pay attention. I'm gonna tell you
how not to get screwed.

Doesn't it ever eat at you, Lenny ?

What we did ?

You wanted a missile, I built it.
It protects the country. That's that.

I've been in denial on this thing
for far too fucking long,

so I went to New York
and met with Ahsan.

That son of a bitch is
one of the reasons we built ours.

There's something I wanna run by you.
Can we go somewhere quiet ?

Why ? No one can hear
anything around here.

Lenny, we've got maybe
five good years left.

That's it.

I've got a plan.

You're gonna help me.

Drink, drink, drink, drink, drink.

Yeah, I guess there were some things
you didn't forget, huh ?

I wish I had right now.

Okay. Let's do that routine we used
to do all the time, you remember ?

Welcome back
to The Truth with Jeremy Graves

and special guest Isaiah Miller.

I'm sitting here with none
other than Isaiah Miller.

Full disclosure, I know this guy.

When he's not taking a bullet
and saving my dad's life,

he's most likely wiping
the old man's ass.

- Figuratively, of course.
- Let's literally look over here, ok ?

I'm reading here that Isaiah Miller,
who was shot

during a presidential assassination
attempt is the keynote speaker

at the Lincoln Day Dinner,
which is ironic beyond words.

That sounds like fun. I...

Actually, I just have one question.

How are you, man ?

Really.

Just so that you have all the facts,

my mom, the one who dances
and chugs beer, that's me.

Not her. At least it used to be.

Yeah. Well, your mom
was always a good time.

Always. She was way too big
for our small town.

But you know what ? Ever since I was
little, I always looked up to her.

- Always.
- Yeah.

Me too.

Jesus Christ.

- You're very pretty.
- You wanna make out ?

No.

But thank you.

What was it like getting shot ?

Well, honestly, Jeremy,
it's really difficult to explain

what it's like the moment you get shot,
because you go completely blank.

PTSD, I read, is very different

for everyone, but one thing
that it always does

is it changes the person's perspective,

especially who you thought
you were before the incident

and who you are after. The shooting
has made me reconsider

everything I believed
since I was a kid,

and I'm not sure what's important
to me anymore.

Just a... a blank slate ?

Yes, exactly.

Look, man, I just wanna say that...
I'm sorry.

You know that I spoke at
Treadwell's hearing and...

I'm sure it contributed
to him getting out and...

I'm just really sorry.

It's all good. We're good.

Okay. Can you just...
It's okay. Get up.

Get the fuck over here.
Come here.

We're clear.

Thanks, man. That was...
That was awesome.

No, thank you. Thank you.

I got to go,
but thank you, Jeremy.

What happens in your brain
after we talk ?

- Are you trying to kill the show ?
- Doug, I'm done.

- You can't. You're under contract.
- Sue me.

What are you doing later ?

Just hanging out
with some friends.

- You could come if you want.
- Okay. I'm in.

I got one last chapter
to write in my story, Lenny.

- Not my problem.
- Nobody gets denial on this one.

I need to get in there,
into that silo.

- What ?
- And you're gonna help me.

The hell I will.

And besides, even if you got in,
what would you do ?

All right. Here's my plan.

You open the path
to the control room...

- You're out of your goddamn mind.
- Hear me out, for Chrissake !

I hear you, and the answer is no.

Hell fucking no, Mr. President.

Fuck.

God bless you all.

God bless
the United States of America.

- Hey ! I'm gonna go home.
- Oh, no.

Yeah, I got to go meet
the movers.

Are you too hammered
to watch the baby ?

Of course not.
No, I'd love to.

You know,
Peg's a really cool chick.

And how dare you be me
before me and not tell me ?

How about that ?

- See you.
- Bye.

So, our own Maggie Lynn Davis
is gonna be a senator, huh ?

Yeah, if I win.

You know, I was wrong...

... saying what I said on the news.
For North.

I idolized you, and then
the world just took you away.

And the only thing I ever was

was just somebody
who really missed you, okay ?

I love you, Bonnie.

- Hey.
- Hey.

So I'm good on the exclusivity
and the commission. That's fine.

But I'm gonna say no
on the three-year term.

I'll give you two, but I want
a six-month option out for both of us.

If we do split, my music's mine.
All rights, without exception.

Are you in ?

I've never agreed to half
the stuff you're asking for.

- Yeah.
- The out after a year.

No one can launch in six months.
All right.

All right !

- Meet your band.
- Okay.

- Oh, my God.
- Rock and fucking roll.

Thanks, guys.

Thanks.

- Oh, sorry.
- My name is Francisco.

I'm here because of Chuy.

Your Arturo was my nephew.

His father, El Terron, is my brother.

You guys really keep it all
in the family, don't you ?

When Chuy threatened
the granddaughter of El Terron

and the safety of that baby's mother,
a line was drawn in the sand.

So you guys killed Chuy.

El Terron takes family very seriously.

He wanted me to extend
his best wishes.

If there is anything you
or your baby needs,

please don't hesitate to ask.

There isn't really something
that I need,

but there is something I want.

This has been so fun.

Well, what do you say we don't wait
another 30 years next time, huh ?

- It's a deal.
- Speech, Maggie.

- Oh, my God.
- Speech.

Give the people what they want !
Give them what they want.

Oh, I need that.

Oh, heavens.

This has been not only one of the
most fun days for me in forever,

but it's really been an education,
a big reminder of who I was.

My family.

My purpose is not about my voice.

My purpose is to be your voice,
my family's voice...

My mom...

Look... If I do not win
this election,

if there is never another election,
that's just fine,

because the truth is
I have already won.

I am always going to be your voice.

This has been a great day.

- Remarkable, isn't she ?
- Yeah, she sure is.

I'm Bailey Todd,
Sammy's new music manager.

- You a friend of hers ?
- Yeah. Isaiah Miller.

Miller ? Hey, you sent that song
over to Robert Hayes at XM.

- Yes, that was me.
- I owe you a huge thank you.

That girl is a fucking goldmine.

Hey, there.
It's Olivia Graves.

Just... Thought maybe you'd
wanna meet your granddaughter.

Yeah ?

I'm in.
