Good Bones (2016–…): Season 2, Episode 10 - Beautifying a Boring Boxy Home - full transcript

Mina has second thoughts about a charmless, boxy house bought from the city for only $4,000. But Karen sees the potential and convinces Mina that they can transform the "giant cube" into an adorable single family home.

I'm Nina,
and this is my mom, Karen.

And we're
renovating Indianapolis

one house at a time.

Hello?

Every rotten, nasty house
that we see...

- Oh, geez.
- We try and buy.

Then, with a little vision...

And a lot of hard work...

We create beautiful homes
for our neighbors.

- Wow.
- Oh, my gosh.

God, look at this!

Ta-da!

This looks great.

Every tragic house...

That's so bad.

Deserves a second chance.

There's a raccoon in the house!

Oh, shoot!

Because, underneath
all that mess,

you might find some
really good bones.

You want to say
good morning to Beegee

before we go to school?

- Yeah.
- Okay.

Hi, Julie.

You're doing such a good job
walking Sophie.

She's a big helper.

Julie is my niece who just
hangs out with me a lot.

She is the best
part of the day.

She's just a delight.

Good morning.

Did you tell Beegee
you were helping walk?

She calls me Beegee,
which is an acronym for...

The "B-E" is
"best grandma ever".

That's Beegee.

We're going to finish our loop,
and then I'll come back

and get you, and we'll go
check out the house.

- All right.
- Okay?

Let's go keep walking.

You got to walk in front of
Sophie so she doesn't trip you.

- Sophie's so confused.
- Walk, walk, walk.

Walk, walk, walk.

Bye, Julie.
I'll see you in a little bit.

Where are we headed today?

We're going to
the Parkway house.

Oh, good.

Which is another one
of the houses

we got from the city for 4,000,

and it's the one
that I want to give back.

I still want to give back,

and I have no interest
in being involved in.

So... What?

Because this house has no charm.

It's just a box.

This house is
currently a duplex.

We purchased it for $4,000,

and it's a little over
2,100 square feet.

It's a four-bedroom
and two-bath,

and it has all the living space
on the first floor

and then all four bedrooms
up on the second floor.

Once we knock down
the center wall, resupport it,

open it up to single-family,

I think we're going to be able
to get at least three bedroom,

two and a half bath.

In Bates-Hendricks, that's...

We've done a handful
of those now.

It's a great neighborhood
with great people.

Right now, it's more residential
and a little bit

more transitional version
of Fountain Square.

But you just get way more house
for your money right now.

All right.

- Got the drill?
- Drill.

Mask.

Really no charm.

I'm just having a really
hard time seeing anything

because the house
is a box,

and all the rooms
in the house are boxes.

There's nothing here
to get her going.

There's nothing inspirational.

It's just flat and square,
and you can't see

more than 10 feet
in front of you.

Yeah.

It needs bigger windows,
a cute little porch,

a pretty little yard.

Mom's the one dragging me along,
kicking and screaming,

"But this could be this."

Gabled roof over the porch.

I'm not as mad at it
as I thought I was.

Yeah.
Look at you.

- Let's go in.
- No, don't--

Come on.

Hello?

Someone's using it as a bedroom,

but I think this is
the living room.

Yeah.

A little worried
about the slope-iness here.

It just needs to be gutted.

Little animal waste?

Lots of cat poop.

This is the kitchen.

I guess we have
a plumbing pipe and...

Let's get some air in here.

Oh.

That's helpful.

Usually, when I walk
through a house, I'm like,

"This is this,

and it's the living room,
and, Mom, don't you see it?"

I got none of that here.

That is so many dead bugs.

- Yeah.
- Bleh.

This is like a horror-movie
level of dead bugs.

And so it's like a living room,
staircase, kitchen

and then this addition
that's kind of scary nasty.

I can see it's falling off.

So this room... I don't know.

A weird mud entry room
with a tragic full bath.

That's not going to work.

So back out front?

- Upstairs.
- Oh, upstairs.

Okay.

Oh, my gosh.

This is steep and skinny.

I have to go sideways.

My feet don't fit.

This house doesn't
have staircases.

It's a ladder.

- Yeah.
- It's terrifying.

Like, we have small feet.

I think ours are the smallest
they come as an adult.

And we have to walk up sideways

because our feet don't fit
this way on the stairs.

It's a ladder.

- Is this the railing?
- I don't know.

I'm just trying to not
touch anything.

This so much poo.

I'm a little concerned that
the chimney has a crack in it.

You think that's...
Uh, whatever.

The chimney's coming down.

I know the chimney's
coming down,

but what's putting the force
on the chimney is the house.

Mm-hmm. I don't think we're
going to know all there is

to know
until we do demo.

Yeah.
We got to strip it down.

So this is a bedroom.
All right.

It'll probably stay a bedroom,

maybe not in
the exact same form, but...

Right, but, if the other
side's mirror image,

that means we have room for...

Four bedrooms, so three
bedrooms and a bath.

- Okay.
- All right.

It's just another bedroom.

Some girlfriend had a fight
with her boyfriend,

and she threw all of his stuff
out the window.

Yeah, she did.

"You don't live here anymore!"
Out the window.

And I think the other side's
identical, but let's go check.

Okay, we'll go take a look.

Hello?

The last time I was here,
I came in through the back,

and there was a board
against this door.

Let's try to see
if we can get in the window.

I was going to say, that window
was a little loose.

Let me move this.

Is that it?
Got it?

Oh, geez.

Oh.

Ooh.
Is that going to stay up?

Ugh.
That smells awful.

Here, want a party hat?

That's so bad.

Okay, are you going
to let me in?

Yeah.

All the cigarettes.

No!

So the door won't open
because someone laid tile

so thick that it's higher
than the door.

- What?
- Look.

No, you just can't open the door
anymore because of the tile.

Oh, that's interesting.

So, so far,
same exact floor plan.

Living room, staircase, kitchen.

A little bit nastier but exact
same as the other side.

Yeah.

And then the same addition,
shed, tragic bathroom thing.

I think this is sinking significantly

and probably is going
to have to come off.

All right.
Let's check upstairs.

I'm assuming second floor
is the exact same,

and I feel like we just need
to gut the whole thing.

Ugh.

Change it from a double
to a single-family

and get three bedrooms
and a bath up here

instead of four bedrooms.

I don't know who would
want to nap there.

Uh.

Ugh!
Ay, ay, ay.

Change it from a double
to a single-family

and get three bedrooms
and a bath up here

instead of four bedrooms.

I don't know who would
want to nap there.

Uh.

Someone is walking around
with very unsupported bosoms.

Cause all the bras are here.

Don't touch things.

Mom, please stop
touching things.

Mina is always telling me
not to touch things.

I don't know why because
I'm going to touch them.

That's your pretty nightie.

That's not.
None of this is pretty.

Let's go check out the outside.

Okay.

We've got a lot of junk trees.

Yup, yup, yup.

It's a nice-size yard.
- It's a nice-size yard.

Get rid of all the junk trees.
Little deck.

Bing, bang, boom?

Bing, bang, boom.

This is definitely
a good-size house

with a lot of challenges.

We need to completely make over
the front of the house,

which has absolutely
no curb appeal.

We also need to tear down
that central wall so we can have

a nice big single-family home

with an open concept living,
dining, kitchen area.

And then we need to completely
tear off the back of the house,

which is sinking.

I feel good about that.
We got a plan.

There's a lot going
on greenery-wise.

Okay.

So we got it four 4,000
from the city,

hoping we can stay
under 200,000 again...

Okay.

And ideally sell
for at least 225.

Our potential to make
a reasonable profit,

about $25,000,
hopefully a little higher.

That all right. Yeah.

- Yeah.
- All right.

Well, let's get these put back
in place and head out.

Good morning.

Today's Demo Day at Parkway.

I hate this house.

Mina doesn't like this house.

I know that it'll
come full circle,

and I'll love it eventually.

This house is super stinky.

There's been squatters.

The back's so messed up.
Tear it off.

All new footers, everything.

So this is full-throttle demo.

So, do you guys
have any questions?

- I think that's it.
- All right.

Let's roll.

This is kind of one
of our more standard demos.

Like, go in. Break whatever you
want. No finesse.

Nothing is staying.

Finesse to the wind, go for it.

I dropped my crowbar
down the hole.

I'm working by the front window
on this hundred layers of wall,

and there's a little HVAC
duct hole cut,

and I dropped
my pry bar down it.

Ah!
Let me see your demo fork.

It's too deep to, like,
reach an arm down there,

so I get the demo fork,
and I'm... In my head,

I'm going to scoop it
with the demo fork, and then...

This whole thought process
doesn't make any sense to me.

You barely missed it?
Where's it at?

Ah! I dropped the demo
fork down there.

You dropped the demo fork?

Chad, get the Sawzall.

So now Mina has to crawl
through the crawl space.

Mina's got to go get it.

Might as well clean it
while you're down there.

Go ahead, Mina.

And so it just
fell out of my hand.

So now the pry bar
is down the hole,

and the demo fork
is down the hole.

- So Mina had to go down the hole.
- And now Tad's mad.

And so I had to go down
in the crawl and retrieve them.

Ugh.

All right.

It smells like pee down here.

Hey, guys!

Hey!

Tool one, and tool two.

- Good job.
- Ugh.

I never want to crawl
down there again.

You going inside?

Checking it out?

I was outside killing weeds,
and there's this raccoon

on the roof acting
like he owns the place.

All right.
I'm going in.

There's a raccoon in the house.

Let's see if he's still
out on the roof.

Is he back in the tree?

Oh, there he is!

Why is this raccoon
so aggressive?

He's coming up this way.

He's coming back!
Get back in the window.

Hold on.

Aah!
Tad, get back in the window!

Oh, here he is!

Why is this raccoon
so aggressive?

He's coming up this way.

He's coming back!
Get back in the window.

Hold on.

Tad, get back in the window!

He's huge.

He's going to go
to the neighbor's house.

It's going to be fine.

Come back in.
Be careful.

- Perfect.
- Wow, such a cool little raccoon.

That's not a cool raccoon.
That's a jerk raccoon.

I could've hugged that raccoon.

And it would've bite your face
off, you'd have not had a nose.

Love solves everything, Mina.

- Nuh-huh.
- Everything.

Heads up.

Check it out.
Look how effective that was.

How is it going?

Overall, we had a pretty
good day at demo,

despite the fact
that I dropped my tools down

into the crawl space

and our little raccoon friend

kept coming to visit
and harass us.

On the plus side, we have
all the walls torn down

and the back
of the house ripped off,

so we can at least
see what going on

and get some kind of vision.

In my mind, this house
is already done,

and it's amazing and beautiful,

and it's going to be
her absolute favorite.

I'll get there.

I am just not there.
I'm not there.

I'm there.
I'm there.

Let's talk about this eyesore.

Look, this is not an eyesore.

I mean, it's way
prettier on paper.

I do have to admit,

once we started working
on the floor plans,

I started to like the house
a lot better.

It doesn't look like
this right now,

but we're going to remove
the two front doors,

just have one front door with
some really nice sidelights,

and then we're going to put a
metal roof over the front porch

that's going to give it
a lot more charm.

I like the balance
of the front of the house.

I do.
I like the balance.

All right.
Lots of changes here.

This had this middle wall
because it was a duplex.

- That's gone.
- Right.

The new center entryway is the
living room and the dining room.

Right.

The next chunk that was
the kitchens on both sides

is going to be the kitchen
on the right side

and then our new staircase up

to the second floor
on the left side.

The whole back
is coming off.

- Right.
- Both sides of the duplex.

- Because it was a mess.
- Because it's a mess.

We're going to rebuild it,

and that's going to house
the master suite.

So we have a master bedroom
on the first floor...

Second floor was pretty
much a Foursquare.

Right.

Keeping it a Foursquare, two of
the four squares bedrooms.

In one of them, we're going
to make loft space,

and then the fourth square
is going to be our full bath

for the upstairs bedrooms.

- Okay.
- No pen marks.

We're good.

I feel like this floor plan
meeting was easy.

We're in agreement
on everything.

Yeah.

So now we just got to get
all these over to Lenny,

and he's going
to start work.

Lenny?

Today is a big day at Parkway.

We're going to pour
the concrete footers

for the back of the house,

which is really important
that it's done right

because that's what's going to
support our new master suite.

We getting some
concrete or what?

Yeah.

All the trenches
for the footers have been dug,

and we're just waiting
on the cement truck

to come and fill them.

Is he going to fit back here?
Is it going to be tricky?

You better hope he does
because, if not,

you're wheelbarrowing it.

Ugh.

- Yeah.
- That's a lot of concrete.

That is a lot of concrete.

All right.
Well let's clear a path.

Make room for him.

Truck's here, Lenny.

That's going to be tricky.

That's snug down there.

- A little snug?
- It's a little snug.

He's making it, though.

Yeah.

Boom.

Barely made it, but we got it.

No more handbarrowing.

It's kind of tricky
with the concrete

because you want it to be able
to set quick enough

but not too quick
so you can get it

all the exact right height

and then level
all the way around.

I would like it to pour
a little faster.

This is very boring.

That's about where we want it
at right there.

This is your laser.
There you go.

So you want to keep it beeping?

I want it that height.

Right here?

Yeah, but you're low.
Just make it green.

Right there?

Lenny's got that tripod
thing that spins.

- Is that the right spot?
- Yep.

- Do it over here?
- Watch my height.

Yep.

And then I'm going
around the outside

with the other
end of the laser,

and it beeps when
it's at the right level.

Good?

Nice.

This is looking real pretty.

Things are going great.

We just need a little bit
more concrete to finish the job,

so we have another
truck on the way.

Watch his wires for him.

Oh, shoot!

Watch his wires for him.

- Oh, shoot!
- Did he hit something?

Like, the line just jerked.

Stay away from the line.
Stay away from the line.

Heads up!

Watch out!

All of a sudden, I see, like,
the electrical pole shake

and wires pull and this
really loud noise.

Oopsy daisy.

Just a phone line?

Landline.

I've seen concrete trucks
and Dumpster trucks before,

like, take out phone poles.

Do you guys have
a landline phone?

- No.
- Lovely.

Talked to the neighbor.
He was very nice.

They don't have a phone line
anymore, so we just snipped it,

got him free and got him
to the back of the house

to pour the concrete.

Ooh.

So it's a little high.

Very close.

- You're good there.
- Perfect there.

It's real pretty, Leonard.

So now that the concrete's
all poured,

they just have to
let it set overnight

and then lay the block.

And then, once
the block's all laid,

that's what the house
gets framed up on top of.

Perfect.
All right.

Later.

Hey, there.

You ready to talk
pretty design things?

Oh, yeah.
I am.

Today, we're finalizing
our plans for the Parkway house.

I see what's there...

This is your... That's everything.

- This is your dream vanity.
- Yes, it is.

We are designing this
entire house around...

The house around this vanity.

I found this wonderful,
artichoke green

with gold detail
bathroom vanity.

She was so in love
with this vanity that it really

became the design inspiration

for the whole house,
inside and out.

So, when it's true love,
what can you do?

Get the vanity.

So outside colors,
again, more greens.

- That's beautiful.
- Yeah.

I want this to be just really,
really, really pale.

Like white, but, if you had
to pick a color, it's green?

- Yes.
- Just the mossier green accent?

Yeah. I want to try and show you
what I want out here.

Let's do a sunburst.

Well, that's what
we had on there.

Yeah.
So let's do...

Replicate it?
I like that.

Any time we can give homage
to the old structure,

we really try to do that.

The old sunbursts on the porch
were a little bit

dated and very decrepit.

They were falling apart.

But I think we can rebuild,
with new lumber,

something that's still similar
to that but a little bit modern,

- a little more updated.
- Okay.

This is what we have
for interior.

So most of the interior walls,
this barely green,

and then accent
the bedrooms with this.

The flooring, I think,
is kind of...

It looks like
old barnwood, kind of.

Mm-hmm.

And this one is
the backsplash option.

I really like that.

You like what's
happening here now?

I can start ordering things?

Yes, you can.

- Okay.
- Lovely.

So, things are rolling
right along.

We've got the back
foundation finished.

All the floor joists are in.

The walls are up.

And the plan today
is to deck the roof

of the new master addition.

Framing is just flying on this.

How are you?

I'm fine.

How are things going here?

Could be better.
Could be worse.

Do you want to see?

What are you showing us?

You have termite damage.

Whoa.

Look how bad that is, Mom.

Holy cow.

Jim shows us some
real funky termite stuff.

And, like, the front sill plate
looks just eaten out.

Um, and just eaten.

You look like
a little termite there.

- Yum, yum, yum, yum.
- I mean, it was like butter.

Oh, man.
That's eaten up.

Aw, shucks.

Look over here.

The central beam
support of the house,

it's sitting on maybe
an inch of brick, maybe.

Oh man. It is not supporting
anything anymore.

We need to get up under
there and brace that up.

The North-South support was
just hanging on for dear life.

How's it going down there, Jim?

Hey, nobody walk through
the middle of the house, please.

So Jim had to go under the house
and support it with a jack,

and it made me super nervous
having him under there.

Why can't we just buy a house
with a decent foundation

for once in our lives?

I agree.

If there's no danger,
there's no fun.

You can see the house lifting.

So, temporarily, we've got it,
like, temp-supported now.

This post that
goes down the middle,

we just have to come back in,

build it back up
with new lumber,

and then we can
build the front wall.

So, I feel like this
probably needs

to get managed before the roof.

So we'll get some materials
to fix this,

get back to the roof later.

- Yeah.
- All right. Cool.

So, over at our house
on Parkway,

all of the termite
damage has been fixed.

The roof decking is all done,
and, today, Lenny called us

over to the Parkway house

because he needs
to talk some stuff.

You always know it's bad news
when Lenny says,

"Can you meet me over
at whatever?"

But he doesn't say what.

Do you love it now, Mina?

I love it more than...
I hate it less.

How about that?

Hi, Lenny.

Why are you looking
at the plans?

There's more problems.

We've got one post,
and then, with us being the 14

and the 15 foot,

we've got to have another post
in this floor plan.

- We're overloading.
- No.

That solves my issue.

We've got one post.

We've got to have another post
in this floor plan.

- We're overloading.
- No.

That solves my issue.

I brought 5-year-old
Mom with me today.

Yes, I see that.

- Is she all right?
- I don't know.

What Lenny's saying now
is that we need to add

a second support post

to bear the load
of the second floor

to comply with code.

So this is our first post,
right here.

And I'm the second post.

And you're the second post?

- That's fine.
- I'm fine with that.

I mean, I'd prefer less,
no post.

But, if we need post,
that's fine.

I don't know why you can't
just levitate houses, Lenny.

So we're going to put that
extra post in the kitchen,

but, with where it's located,

it's going to kind of frame
out the kitchen space,

so it's not going to be
the end of the world.

And it'll keep the second floor
from collapsing.

Yes, so we'll call it
a win-win.

Win-win it is.

- Hey there.
- Hey.

- I'm ready.
- All right.

What I've got here
is some old windows.

We've been trying
to figure out what to do

in the backyard
for the Parkway house,

and Mom has this idea
to do little minigreenhouses.

- Cold frames.
- They're called cold frames.

You want this like this?

Right.

So my understanding
of what will happen is,

we can set them in the backyard
at the house,

put plants in them,

and you could insulate it
even more if you wanted,

but it'll keep them
warm enough to stay alive

over the winter,

which can be very
brutal in Indiana.

- Yes.
- All right.

So now... Now the back piece?

So the first thing you do is,
you build a box.

The back was higher
than the front,

so the side had an angle,

and then we hinged the windows
on and then put handles on.

- It was not complicated.
- Easy peasy.

It's not, like, crazy heavy.

No.

No, that would easily
be movable in your backyard.

It just creates some vertical
interest in your yard,

and it's a place where spring
and fall vegetables

can live a lot longer
in Indiana.

- Looks good.
- Nice. Pretty happy.

So let's go look
at some stain options.

- And pick something out?
- Yep.

- Cool.
- Just the easiest project

in the world
if you have some old windows.

I think it turned out
super cute.

Over here at our house
on Parkway,

things are moving right along.

We've got the beam in.

We've got the posts
in the kitchen.

Windows are in.
Drywalls are up.

Cabinet's delivered,
and we're kind of getting

close to the home stretch.

Morning.

Good morning.

I got two sanders from Lenny.

So Mom and I have quite possibly

the most boring job today

to do at our Parkway house,

which is sanding floors.

This is the worst job ever.

It's not fun.

It's dusty.
It's boring.

But all of our workers are
elsewhere, so we're doing it.

Come here.

We're going to have
a little sander race.

Whoa!
One, two, three.

Whoa!

Aw!

These are Lenny's toys.

I didn't know belt sanders
were that much fun.

Lenny, we're having
a belt sander race

because you left us
here with your toys.

One, two, three, release.

You so won.

I feel like, at some point
in his youth,

Lenny did that
with a belt sander.

I feel like he did.

Neither of us are really
in our youth anymore, though.

We're both grown adults,
belt sander racing.

That was super fun.

They're only fun
if you're not using them

as you're supposed to use them.

While we're standing here
for a second, wallpaper.

Over there?

Mm, just on one wall.

- Right there.
- Mm-hmm.

And we've got this wall
that's just kind of blank.

One of my favorite things
to do in our houses

is to create
some kind of focal point.

I like a little wallpaper.

I'm fully in support
of wallpaper

if I do not have to do it.

All right. So I can just pick my
wallpaper, do what I want?

Go crazy.
All right.

- We'll rock and roll.
- All right.

Today, we're working on finding
the right wallpaper

for our house on Parkway.

- I love this place.
- Me too.

Hi, Jennifer, how are you?

- Good. How are you guys?
- We're good.

We're on a wallpaper mission.

- We're on a mission.
- Gotcha.

She's got this soft green theme
going through the house.

Yeah, come back.
I'll show you some things.

I love it when she says that.

There are a lot of things
you can do with paint,

but there is something
about wallpaper.

It gives a different
texture to the wall,

and those different textures
are valuable in a design.

So there's the Mum.

I like the Mum.

Yeah.

And we could customize the
color, so bring in your greens.

Oh.

We've also got the option
that we could do the color

as the background,

or we could do the color
as the lines.

So you've got them
flipped there.

- Correct.
- That's pretty.

And it turns out
they can print it in, like,

any color combination.

Wow.

I like the green background.

I like this.

Yeah, because it's
the whole color shimmers.

Okay. Yay. Yay!
I'm a little excited.

- Let's get it printed.
- Do we get to watch?

- You do.
- That's magical.

So we actually got to come in,
pick out the pattern we wanted,

which was the Mums,
pick out the background

and the foreground color,
and then watch it print.

This is the best
field trip ever.

This is going to be perfect.

We're bringing
wallpaper back, people.

We're bringing it back.

This is where a helper
would come in handy.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no.

Nope, nope, nope.

No!

Hi, guys.

- Hi.
- Hey, how are you?

Awesome.

Tonight, we're meeting
Cassie and Greg,

who are our potential buyers
for our house on Parkway.

And, unfortunately,
they travel a lot for work,

and this was the only time
they could come.

We don't have electricity
in the house,

so it is tour by flashlight,

and I just hope
that the flashlights

will do it justice.

This is your living room, dining
room closest to the kitchen.

And then you come through here,

and you'll have
this huge breakfast bar

that you could seat, like,
five or six people at.

- Yeah.
- Right.

That's nice.

And, on the back, we have
the first-floor master.

So I think a lot of people like
having it on the first floor.

The kids are all upstairs.
You're down here.

We have one small child now.

He's 2, and we hope
to have more in the future.

So we want to have
a few bedrooms,

possibly a playroom

and really an open concept.

- That's a good size.
- Pretty significant master.

Bathroom's right behind you,

and there's this huge
walk-in shower.

Oh, that's nice.

Want to go check out upstairs?

You don't even want to look
at the backyard yet.

- Okay.
- Don't look at the backyard!

Upstairs is two bedrooms,
full bath,

and then a loft space
that could easily

be converted
to a third bedroom.

Okay.

These two bedrooms
are pretty identical.

And this space we set up so you
could do it as an open loft,

have, like,
a little study area

for the kids
or an office for you.

Let's head back downstairs,
where there's

a little bit
more light still.

- Okay.
- All right.

What do you guys think?

You know, it's a little hard
to tell just yet.

- In the dark?
- Yeah.

In the dark and without
everything finished.

It's definitely
what I think we like.

It'd be nice to see it
with a little more light.

Yeah.

But today I thought
was pretty good.

We'll let you guys know
as soon as it's done.

Let's get out of here for now
because it's kind of creepy.

Thank you.

I do know people get really
psyched to be able

to see the before
and the after,

so, hopefully,

it's going to be enough
to blow them away,

and they just want to buy
it immediately and done.

So, over at our Parkway house,

the punch list of things to do
is getting smaller and smaller.

The back deck is in.

The sunbursts on the front porch
is getting installed.

The backsplash is going in.

The staircase
is being installed,

and Mom is going to

install the wallpaper
that we custom designed.

Yeah, apparently, I'm going
to do this all by myself.

- Solo.
- Just me and the wallpaper.

Are you kidding?

You got to stay up there.

This is where a helper
would come in handy.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Nope, nope, nope.

No!

Mom has the patience
for wallpaper, not really me.

I'm kind of tempted to put
some paste on the paper.

The wallpaper fell on me.

I would've liked to have
been there to see that.

Well, I'm actually glad
you weren't,

because I didn't read
the instructions.

- That's unlike you.
- I know.

I didn't apply
the paste correctly.

I didn't book it,
and it needed to be booked.

Oh, that helped a lot.

There we go.

That helped a lot.

I gotcha.
No?

You don't stick?

Everybody else is sticking.

Do what all the other kids
are doing, all the cool kids.

You got to stand back
to appreciate it.

Look how pretty that is.

So there was a little trial
and error, but I figured it out.

Despite the fact that
Mom didn't read the directions,

I think the wallpaper
turned out really well.

Oh, it did.
It turned out great.

Go, Mom!
Good job.

Today, we are delivering
our handmade cold frames

to our house on Parkway.

There we go.

That's a two-hand job
right there.

I think we should
put them back here.

Okay.

We can look at them
once we get them down and fuss

with them a little
if we need to.

But I think they'll
look nice here.

- Like, right there?
- Right there?

Okay.
That's good.

Get the other one.

So you kind of want to center
between these posts?

- So like, there-ish?
- Is that okay?

You've got two pieces
on your side?

- Yeah.
- I think that looks fine.

Sunlight is key.

That'll be where
it'll get the most sun

based on the exposure
of the house.

So whoever buys
the house can plant

whatever they want
that's appropriate,

like, at various times
of the year.

- Yes. Exactly.
- Well, lovely.

- Yeah.
- All right. Let's roll.

We are at our house on Parkway,

and today is
the furniture load-in day

where we get all
the pretty furniture

and get the tchotchke in place

and kind of make
the house a home.

Ooh.

Ooh!

I have never been so excited
in all my life.

She's real happy
about her ladder-back chair.

Yay.

It's everything I wanted
for this baby.

Two things that I felt needed
to go in this house

were a green velvet couch

and green ladder-back chairs
with rattan seats.

Farmhouse and vintage.

Yeah, a marrying of those two.

Plus, it goes perfectly
with your inspiration vanity.

Exactly.

Perfect.

I did hate this house.

I didn't want to do it.

And now it's like...

I don't want to say
every house is my favorite,

but it's probably top three.

The loft area's adorable.

We just got, like, a little love
seat settee kind of thing

and a couple chairs, little
coffee table, a comfy rug.

So it's just
a second living room,

really, and just a little bit
of extra space.

So like a reading nook,
a little private.

Kind of away from the hubbub
of the main part of the house.

This is a cute little space.

I think Cassie and Greg
are really going to like it.

Cassie and Greg are coming
by the house tomorrow

in the daytime with electricity,

so, hopefully, the house
will speak to them

as a young family
looking for room to grow.

Now that we've put all
the finishing touches on,

our next step is to just
get Greg and Cassie in

and let them check it out.

Just park there.

It's cute.

So do you remember the last time
you were at the house?

It was really dark.

I remember there
was no electricity.

So today is the big day.

We're going to show Cassie
and Greg the house,

and the hope is that
they fall in love with it

and want to buy it.

When we purchased this house,
I hated it.

Mom always loved it
and always saw the potential,

and it took me
a minute to get there

because there was
no curb appeal.

So we've added a cover
to the front porch

and put a really cool

metal roof on it,
and I love it now.

Yeah, none of that was there
the last time we saw it.

All right. So we've got a lot
of good stuff to show you.

- All right.
- Eyes down.

- Oh, wow!
- It looks a little bit different.

Completely different.

It has a porch, for starters.

So that's huge.

I love the railing.

That's the old sunburst,

but it's been modernized
a little bit.

I love what you guys
did with that.

And I love the color
of the door, too.

Like, kind of the earth tones.

That's pulled throughout
the entire house.

That was Mom's, like,
color for the house.

Yeah, that's my green.

It was a completely
different house.

So we were shocked just
from the outside alone.

The inside is really awesome.

I'm excited to show you guys.
You want to go in?

Yeah, we're excited.

Ta-da.

- Wow.
- Oh, wow.

You can look up now.

Oh, wow!

It looks a little bit different.

It looks completely different.

It has a porch, for starters.

So that's huge.

You want to go in?

Yeah, we're excited.

Ta-da.

- Wow.
- Oh, wow.

This looks great.

Just lights make
a big difference, huh?

Yeah, it does.

Right where you guys
are standing is

where the wall
was between the duplex.

So we opened it all up.

So now you've got living room,
dining room, kitchen,

a nice big open concept.

Yeah.
This looks great.

Yeah.

I love the kitchen.

Well, you want to get
a little closer to the kitchen?

- Yeah.
- All right.

I really like the countertop.

- We've seen a lot of Carrara.
- Okay.

It's usually very, very creamy
white with grey veins.

And, lately, we've been seeing

a lot more of this
darker grey Carrara.

And this backsplash
that Mom picked out is just...

- Yeah.
- Ridiculous.

I love it.

We had some custom-made
wallpaper...

Uh-huh.

Because we couldn't find
what we wanted.

That's looks great.

It all really
goes well together.

There's a main-floor
master suite.

- Are you ready for that?
- Ready.

So, master suite.

Nice.

This looks really...
It looks a lot bigger

than when we saw it last time.

Plenty of room for a dresser,
side tables.

Mm-hmm.

I love that the master
is on the main level,

and it's really spacious.

You want to see
your bathroom?

- We do.
- Okay.

Bathroom.

Your own sweet master
bath in here.

Come on in.

This is gorgeous.

You've got a nice big
soaking tub and walk-in shower.

Yeah.
I love the tub.

- It's huge.
- It is.

I might actually fit in it.

You think so?

Give it a shot.
Let's see.

I think you'll have
to bend your legs.

There's plenty of space for you.

That's actually not bad.

You don't... That doesn't look bad.

Like, I thought you were going
to look way more giant.

First tub I could fit
in in a long time.

So it's something
I really look forward

to taking some nice
little bubble baths.

Well, we still have
the whole second floor,

so let's go up there and check
out all the other bedrooms.

- Okay.
- Perfect.

The master bathroom
is just beautiful.

Karen and Mina did a great job
picking out everything in there.

So up here... Oh, this is cool.

We've got this kind of
second living space, loft area.

Oh, this is cool. Yeah.

Kid's playroom.

Yeah, that's a great idea.

This is a nice space.

I really like this.

Do you want to see
the bedrooms?

Yeah.
Definitely.

This is really pretty.

Both the rooms,
you've got this one

and then pretty much a mirror
image one right behind you

that are both about 12 by 12

and have 6 or 7
feet of closets.

They feel bigger again
just from remembering

it was dark
and dingy last time.

Well, you put a bed in it, and...

I agree.

It seems so much bigger,
yeah, than last time.

All right. Let's go check out
the next space.

Okay.

So here's your
upstairs bathroom.

- Oh, nice.
- Come on in.

And I like the double mirrors
that you have for the vanity.

The vanity is a little bit more
like a piece of furniture...

- Mm-hmm.
- Than a bathroom vanity.

- I found these vanities.
- Oh, really?

That's kind of what
the design for the house

was based off of,
was these vanities.

So, we got the vanities.

I like them.

I like that they're the same,
too, like, throughout.

That they're the same
as the master.

It kind of continues.

It pulls the whole
house together.

Like the flow. Yeah.

All right, well,
we still have the backyard.

Woo-hoo!

I don't even think
we saw that last time.

I think they really
like the house.

Oh, they love the house.

First of all, who wouldn't
love this house?

It's adorable.

Nice big deck space...

- Wow.
- Oh, wow.

And plenty of green space.

This looks great.

You know what a cold frame is?

- I don't.
- Come check them out.

I'll show you.

I collect things
from the houses,

so I have a collection
of windows.

And I thought, for back here,

because you get nice
southern exposure,

we could put
some cold frames.

Oh.

And it's like a minigreenhouse.

Oh, that's a great idea.

Oh, wow.
That's so cool.

And mom has strawberry plants
in them right now.

So it keeps it warmer longer.

We keep saying we're going to do

a little garden,
but I have a lot to learn.

And you can put
whatever you want

in at different times
of the year.

- I really like it.
- So what do you guys think?

I think that it has a lot
of the things that we want.

We like the open concept,
and it's a great size.

All right. Well, I'm sure you
guys have some mulling to do.

- It's a big decision.
- Yeah.

But I am getting it listed,
so don't mull too long.

Okay.
I'll let you guys know soon.

All right.
Let's get out of here.

So we bought this house
for 4,000,

and we have about
$175,000 into it,

so all in around 180.

We actually have it under
contract already for 225,000.

So, if we sell it and close
at that price,

after closing costs
and everything's taken out,

we'll have a profit
of around $25,000.

The people who are buying the
home are not Greg and Cassie.

They decided to stay a little
further out in the suburbs,

but we do have an awesome guy
buying the house

that I think is really
going to love it.
