Good Bones (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 7 - Family Reunion Renovation - full transcript

Mina has mixed feelings when she agrees to remodel her dad's house in the suburbs of Indianapolis. Her childhood home definitely needs an update, but her father may still need some convincing.

I'm Mina,
and this is my mom, Karen.

And we're renovating Indianapolis,

one house at a time.

Every rotten, nasty house
that we see...

- Oh!
- Holy moly.

...we try and buy.

Then with a little vision... And a lot of hard work...

...we create beautiful homes
for our neighbors.

- Oh, my gosh.
- Wow.

I don't want to build
crappy houses for my neighbors.

I just don't.

- Are you crying already?
- It looks amazing.

Every tragic house...

There's the bathtub!

...deserves a second chance.

Holy God.
This smells awful.

Because underneath
all that mess,

we might find
some really good bones.

- Hello.
- Well, hello there!

- I brought beverages.
- Yay.

Are these adult beverages?

No, it's just
raspberry lemonade.

But it's still yummy.

Ooh, that is delicious.

There is this amazing house

that I've been stalking
for like a year now,

that costs way too much money,

that there was no way
we could afford.

And I finally made it happen.

And we got this insane house.

- You got?
- Finally.

Usually, we buy houses
for $5,000, $10,000, cash.

And this one was $130,000.

- Are you kidding?
- But you trust me, right?

- Do you see my face?
- Yes. Just trust me.

I'm confused.

A lot of money, a lot
of aggravation, a huge project.

Why do you look so happy?

'Cause the location
could not be better.

It just makes it all fine.

$130,000,
I'm not gonna lie--

It's a really--

It's a lot.

I'm so excited
we got this house!

So excited.

So, do you want
to see the house?

- Yes, I do.
- Let's go.

All right.
Let's go.

- What are you doing?
- Ta-da!

Wait, this is it?

This is it.

Do you see why I was
willing to overpay?

Yes, now I know
why you overpaid.

'Cause it's next door, so now
we can control the renovation,

make sure it's done right.

Control.

It's all about maintaining
my need for control.

I'm definitely usually
the control freak--

like, "Does the money
make sense?

Can we figure this out?
We're figuring it out first."

But this one,
because it's next door,

apparently it got through
some loophole in me,

and we're winging it.

You have a loophole?

Apparently there's one loophole.
And now we're winging it.

This house is right next door.

It could not get any better,
location-wise, for us.

Not only is North Square

probably one of the most
desirable sections

in Fountain Square,
it's also on the best--

I think the best block
in Fountain Square.

That's what makes
this one so fantastic.

Yes.

The house work's
a little bit different

from any of the other projects
we've bought.

It doesn't make sense financially.

But it's in
the right location.

It's Mom's house,
my house, empty lot

that we also bought,
and then this house.

So we have a pretty
significant chunk of the block.

And I think that's worth
paying a premium.

Hopefully, it is.

Are you excited?
Come on. Give it to me.

- I am.
- I got my flashlight.

I got my tape measurer.

I got a cellphone.

I got my phone
in case we need a flashlight.

The outside's
just so sad-looking.

We'll perk it up, though.

I'm gonna-- Thank you.

Leave that open.

Hmm.

This is just, like,
an awful waste of space.

- Yeah.
- I mean, it's a good space.

But it's not serving
any kind of function.

There's so much dead space.

It's too big for an entryway,
too small for living room.

I feel like if we open it up
into the other room

and make it part
of the other room--

- Yeah.
- Making the foyer

and the living room
one big space

will definitely give the area
a better flow.

- These ceilings are insane.
- I like these ceilings.

If that wall is gone, and that
whole ceiling is like that...

- That'd be nice.
- ...that would be awesome.

There is some charm inside.

- The ceilings are--
- There's no charm.

No, the ceilings are awesome.

- That's not charm.
- I think it's charm.

You can't tell me
what I think is charm.

You can think
something else.

She's making up words.

I like the bookshelves.

- I don't like the color of them.
- No, no, not the color.

And I'm pretty sure
the book shelves are part

of the structural integrity
of the house.

I love the open staircase.

But I think
even if this wall opens up,

we're gonna have to
pull the staircase out,

'cause that looks
really steep.

My only concern is they probably
made it this steep

because once you're-- Like, for
the headroom where that is--

Oh.

That-- You're right.
I didn't even notice that.

We can't do
a circular staircase.

Those are such a pain
in the butt to move stuff.

How did you know?
You're reading my mind.

I know
where your brain goes.

The idea
of the staircase is cool.

- Yes.
- The open--

Uh, it's very steep.

Be way better if it was
a circular staircase.

It'd just be way better
if it was less steep.

It would be better
if it was circular.

Oh, my gosh.
It's gonna be one of those days.

- All right.
- We'll figure it out.

All right. Upstairs.

God, these stairs
are really steep.

- This is awful.
- It's like climbing a mountain.

It's a good workout
for my bum.

This is a perfectly
good-sized bedroom.

I like the ceiling angles.

I think this is very workable
as a bedroom.

Let's go look
at the next room.

I really like this loft.
I think if we can get away

with keeping this kind
of feel up here...

- Yes.
- Nice.

This room's just a mirror image
of the other one, pretty much...

- Yeah.
- ...with a lot of

cigarette butts and clothes.

Standard operating procedure.

- Funky, little closets.
- Not bad.

Oh, look!

That's cool.

That is cool.
That looks old.

Yeah, I think it's probably
an old gable end vent.

It looks like
somebody covered it up.

Take the nails out,
clean it.

Probably these pieces
on the back can come off.

Frame it
so it all holds together.

I know
it's annoying to Mina,

but I just can't
help myself.

Most of the time, the things
that I find in the houses

pretty much
are trash to anyone else.

But to make it
something beautiful

that can go back
in a house,

to me, feels like
a really exciting opportunity.

I feel like
you're not really dressed

to play with this
right now.

So let's maybe
finish our walkthrough,

and then you can come back
and get it later.

Come here.
I want to hug you.

It's like a ladder.

- Yeah.
- It's not like stairs.

It's very steep.

This back here

is what looks a little like
a little creep zone.

It's so dark.
You know, so far,

I haven't needed
my flashlight.

So, this was
the laundry room.

- Yeah.
- Here, this is just all trash.

- This is all trash.
- This whole thing's trash.

Go to the bathroom.

Is there something
creepy in there?

- I don't know.
- Stop pushing me.

What is that?

Our latest project is the
house right next door to mine.

At $130,000,

it's ridiculously pricy,

and it's
a little creepy, too.

What is that?

- Come look at this thing.
- Every single house we go in,

we're, like, waiting for a dead
body. It's gonna happen someday.

And there's this thing
sticking out in the dark.

It's like,
"Oh, dead body."

What is that?

I don't know.
It looks like a leg.

Oh, my gosh.

I don't even know
what that is.

That's so creepy.

- Why is that in the bathtub?
- I don't know.

Here.
Will you hold these?

We find
the weirdest things.

What are you doing here?

Um...

Just a weird, large,
black bunny head.

- What the heck?
- Don't know what to do with that.

Like, what? Yeah.

Oh, my God.

This room definitely
smells the worst.

The smell inside Hosbrook

is hard to even explain,

'cause it's not
'just one thing.

It's, like, poop and urine,
and you keep walking through,

and you find new,
more awful smells.

- Oh, my God.
- The smell and dirt

I'm not even worried about.
What is going on in here?

You see, like,
all the different ceiling lines.

This obviously was
two separate additions.

Like, addition,
then they closed in a shed.

- You see that bow right there?
- Yeah.

And the floors
are completely uneven.

And I'm really concerned

that was this is supposed
to be holding up,

it might not holding up
the way it's supposed to.

I don't think
there's any fixing this.

I think this just
needs to come off.

This seems pretty easy.

Just tear off this awful,
shed-like addition

and make an entire new
two-story addition

with a fabulous kitchen,

a dining room
on the first story,

and then a master suite
in the new space above.

I have no idea
what's happening in this fridge.

Don't open the fridge!

Never a good idea.

Ugh. Ugh!

Oh, Mom!

Told her not to open it.
She opened it.

It didn't hit you
right when you opened the door.

It's like you open the door,
and like, "Oh, it's not bad.

There's pizza and whatever."

And then it punches you
in the face.

Ohh.

Well, I'm pretty sure

we just have to tear
the whole back half off.

With the $130,000
purchase price,

probably $120,000 reno,

so $250,000 at least
all-in.

We have to get more bathrooms
and bedrooms in here.

I think that's the only way
we can make it big enough

to try to sell it
for like $285,000.

Those numbers hurt your head?

- Yeah.
- We'll just be careful.

- Okay.
- Okay.

Let's go home.

- Talk to Lenny.
- And talk to Lenny.

I feel like Lenny's
gonna love this one.

We're getting to work
right next door on Hosbrook.

Today's the day this house
starts its new beginning.

It's demo day!

And that means we have to take
some of the old house away.

Yes.

- Hey, guys.
- How's it going?

- Good.
- It's good.

Good. We got some new faces.

- We got some new faces.
- All right.

My little brother, Tad,
runs our demo team,

along with
all those giant humans.

So, today's a little bit different.

This house isn't coming down
to the clean studs.

So, outside,
siding and trim come off.

Windows are staying.
So please don't break them.

So we'll have
all you guys in the back

start ripping the siding off.

- See you guys. Get to work.
- All right.

Our business definitely is a
family business to some extent.

My brother, Tad,
runs our demo crew.

His kind of step-dad, Lenny,

is the head
of our construction.

So he manages the projects.

We keep it
all in the family.

Ugh!
Oh, it's a praying mantis.

It scared me.

We've got an entire back shed
addition to get rid of.

So we got to
bring in the big guns.

I love when the demo
can include the excavator.

This is awesome.

Get it, Leonard!

Come on!
Bring it down, boy!

Watch it. Watch that corner.

Bring that son of a gun down!

Knock out that outside wall!

Put your arm in there
and hit it!

Nice!

Come on!

- Gas leak!
- Look at that gas.

- What?
- Gas!

- Did it hit it?
- Yeah, you hit it!

- Get 'em out. Get 'em out.
- Out!

He's not kidding. When he
says, "Out," he means, "Out."

Get everyone out.

So, we're getting the demo done

on the house next to mine
on Hosbrook.

But when Lenny's
operating the excavator,

not all goes as planned.

Come on!

- Gas leak!
- Stop!

- What?
- Gas!

- Did it hit it?
- Yes, you hit it!

When it happened,
it was panic mode.

Lenny's on
a piece of mechanical equipment

that has gasoline in it
and has moving parts.

Right.

- Get 'em out.
- Out!

Get 'em out.

No cigarettes!

Get 'em out. Get 'em out.

Call the gas company.

Should we try
to cover it somehow?

It's very possible

that something serious
could have happened

if there was a spark
with that much gas filling--

even though
it's an outside space.

So my immediate reaction was,
"Everybody get away."

We hit the gas line
at the meter.

- Broke the meter off.
- Broke the meter off.

You can hear it
from 60 feet away,

hissing out of the meter.

Well, I didn't
see that coming.

- No, it's supposed to be off.
- They turned it off.

Apparently, they didn't
turn it off at at the street.

At the street.

Here comes
the fire department.

We have gas now exiting
from the meter very aggressively

at the house,
which is dangerous,

because if we get
a single spark,

you know what happens-- boom.

- Has anybody shut it off yet?
- No.

No, it's broke
past the meter.

If that thing exploded,
it would take Mina's house out.

It would take Karen's house out.

It would take out
her beautiful houses

that she renovated
on the other side of the street.

So a lot could happen right now
if it went badly.

Oh, that does smell so bad.

Next time, double check
that it's off at the street.

- Off at the street.
- Now, hang on a second,

Hang on a second.

I know how to throw
a party, right?

- I call it, don't I?
- Yeah.

Once we realized
that everything was safe--

- Then it was funny.
- It wasn't really funny.

- It was funny.
- But then it was okay,

- like, "Oh, my God."
- And it wasn't our fault.

We shut down
the whole street.

It's gonna be
on the news tonight."

Ugh.

Party time is over!

Whoo!

With everything
finally under control,

we're getting back to work
finishing tearing off

this tragic addition.

We'll probably be able to
wrap up demo end of day today.

It just needs
to be cleaned up.

And that's just waiting
for a Dumpster.

Yeah.

Today, Mom and I are meeting
at my office

to talk through the new
floor plans for Hosbrook.

We've got a whole
new addition on the back.

So we have
a lot more free reign

with moving stuff around,
tweaking things,

'cause we're building it
from scratch.

All right.
We've got Hosbrook today.

So what I'm thinking
for the front part of the house,

as soon as you walk in,
remove this wall in front of us

so we have a huge
open concept

with an office
over on the left.

So the front half
mainly staying the same.

The entire back of the house
and the addition

will have our awesome, open
concept kitchen and dining area

with two huge
sliding glass doors

opening to an amazing deck.

- That's way better.
- Yeah.

Way better.

- Okay.
- The front half of the house

is two rooms and a loft. And
we're gonna leave it that way.

- All right.
- In the back,

which is new, we'll have
a massive master suite

and then another full bathroom
to service the two bedrooms

that are already up there.

That's really nice.
I like that a lot.

I do need to talk to you
about the master bathroom.

'Cause I had a moment
in my head

where I thought a bidet
would be really fun

and different and cool.

I don't think the bidet
brings as much to the table

as a free-standing tub
and a walk-in shower do.

So I want to reconfigure
that space.

So this is now shower,
and this is our toilet.

And then I want to do
a free-standing tub.

That would be awesome.
All right.

- Good?
- I'm with you. I'm good.

All right.

Well, I will get
those few adjustments made,

talk to Leonard,
then we'll get rolling.

Beautiful.

Buying this house
for $130,000

was definitely
a bit of a risk,

but I still think
it was a good investment.

Now that we're gonna be able
to renovate it the way we want,

it's gonna be one more house
on our block that's fixed up.

It's not only gonna benefit
that one house and those buyers.

It's gonna make
the whole block better,

which is gonna raise
everyone's property values.

And that includes us,
so that's an added bonus.

Work is under way
at Hosbrook.

The foundation
has been poured.

The subfloor has been
laid for the addition,

and now it's time
to frame the walls.

But while Mom is helping
on the second-floor framing,

I notice a problem down below.

- Have you been inside?
- No.

I got distracted out here.

I want to show you
the shenanigans inside.

All right.
What's your concern?

My biggest concern...

- is in here.
- Yeah.

Okay, come...

stand here with me.

Maybe a little further back.

No!
No, what the heck?

- Do you see it already?
- Yeah!

I can see
right in front of me,

there's a

4-by-8 sheet,

and then there's
this funny rhombus shape.

And that's not right.

Is that side roughly square
to the wall?

That side's good.
It's this side that...

This side
that's not square.

...that pulls out
pretty dramatically.

- Okay.
- The framers built the frame

on the block that was there.

So the block got laid askew.

For more behind the scenes
footage of our renovations

and some hands-on
construction work...

Where you see us put up
roof trusses...

- ...floor joists...
- ...siding...

- ...walls...
- ...watch us wallpaper...

- ...paint...
- ...tile...

...stain,

Just one empty lot
away from my house,

the Hosbrook addition
is being framed.

But all is not well.

- Stand here with me.
- What the heck?

- Do you see it already?
- Yeah!

Looks like
we're wedged out this way.

Yeah!

And the framers built the frame
on the block that was there.

So the block got laid askew.

So now there's
a two-story structure

built on this
wonky foundation.

That side's good.
It's this side that...

This side
that's not square.

...that pulls out
pretty dramatically.

Okay.

Whew.

- Good morning.
- Where's Leonard?

I have a few things
I need to say to him.

Right?

It's actually
a simple mistake.

But because of
the time constraints

and the pressure
and the money,

in the grand scheme
of things

now has turned
into a really big problem.

Yes.

Yeah, this is slightly
terrifying, guys.

9:45.
Is Leonard here?

- Hi, Leonard!
- Hi, Leonard!

What's up?

We have a really
interesting floor plan

on this new addition.

Yeah, you do.

My question is, is
why you know about it.

Come out here
and talk to us, please!

I found out about it
'cause I have eyeballs!

I think he left.

That's so creepy!

- Listen to this.
- Come over here!

Come over here. Wait, wait.

- Take this window out.
- What was your plan?

Um, once they got
everything set,

the walls set,
we were gonna come in,

jack it up, reset the block,

cantilever the joists out.

I mean, the foundation's
structurally sound.

- Right.
- It's just not square.

- Made a mistake.
- Things happen.

- Yep.
- I make mistakes all the time.

Not quite this big, but...

Lenny assures us
that he can make it square.

He's got a solution

that involves some new block
and some cantilevering

and other words
that all end up

in a solution
within 3 days.

He essentially moved the wall,

trimmed off part of the floor
that wasn't square,

and now we're good to go.

The back addition
is going to be perfect.

Today, we're hanging
at a local brewery

to figure out
our design plan for Hosbrook.

It's industrial barn.

It's fancy words.

It's industrial barn.

I want to start, I think--

Don't look at
the pretty things yet.

Okay, don't look
at the pretty things?

I want to start
with flooring.

And I know they're both
so different.

So it's gonna be
a really tough choice.

Well, you know what?
Actually, this one

- has a lot more texture.
- Mm-hmm.

And I think we need
more texture.

- Okay. You like so far.
- Yes.

It'll bring the floor up
to the ceiling,

which is all that
exposed lumber, too.

Yes. When you're in
the original part of the house,

we're gonna have
these dark, hand-scraped floors

and exposed beams and wiring.

But the new addition's
gonna be cleaner,

'cause it's gonna have really
high drywalled, smooth ceilings.

- Right.
- So I'm thinking,

to pull through the wood element
just a bit,

we go with
butcher block counters,

then, like,
sleek it up a bit...

Ooh, yeah.

...with clean, white
subway tiles,

really clean, white cabinets,
and some open shelving.

- I like it.
- So I think the last thing

that we kind of
throw in there--

I'm going... metal.

Put some more
fun color metals.

- So, like...
- Oh!

These aren't, obviously,
light fixtures.

But something along
this line.

- No, these are earrings.
- Those are not earrings.

Actually, those might be
someone's earrings.

I could see that happening.

We need to look
at paint colors,

- 'cause I feel like--
- Okay. I have the wheel.

I think we're looking at
shades of gray.

Yeah. And then kind of
do the same thing outside

but just a little bit
richer gray.

Yeah. I mean, we always
care about color outside.

- But we're next door.
- We're gonna see this every day.

Right.
So color's gonna be a big deal

I know I've told you
that the people--

There's been an interested party
for quite some time now.

Um, and they just had a baby,
like, just had a baby.

- So we get a baby?
- It's, like, brand-new.

Well, we don't get the baby.
We might get to see the baby.

- Get to hold the baby?
- Um, but I think it'd be fun

to, like, really give 'em
the hard sell,

is to set up,
like, a nursery

or a play room upstairs.

- Set the hook and reel 'em in.
- Yes, there you go.

And-- And they get to be
our neighbor.

- Right!
- So, like, if that doesn't sell,

then I don't know what does.

Set the hook
and reel 'em in.

Yes.

Today, we're at Hosbrook.

We have the addition
structure built.

We've got the roof on.

And the next step is plumbing
and electrical, HVAC,

and drywall.

And there's a pretty
fundamental change

I'm gonna try
to talk Mina into.

I think what she's gonna like

is it's not gonna
cost any extra money

and I think it's gonna make
our floor plan flow better.

You know how we have this big
entryway on the right-hand side,

and we've been talking
about how it's kind of awkward?

This house
has two front doors.

We had planned to make the right
the main entrance,

but I want to switch it
to the left.

So let's imagine
this is our entryway,

'cause there's gonna be
a big, huge closet here

for the furnace
and the water heater.

- Okay.
- We can open this up all the way.

We come through the entryway,

and we're in
our living room.

- Okay.
- We're not in our kitchen.

So you're saying put
the office over there...

- Yeah!
- ...and the entry here...

- Yeah!
- ...instead of vice versa.

Right. 'Cause that gives us
a bigger office,

a smaller entry,

and we want
both of those things, right?

Yeah.

- Makes a lot more sense.
- And that sidewalk

going up to the front
is cruddy anyway,

so we'll break that up,
move the gate and the sidewalk

over to the left entrance.

- Boom.
- Voilà.

Check out
the master upstairs?

- Oh, yeah. Is the wall down?
- We actually have one.

- Yeah.
- Yay!

Oh, look at that!

This is our master.

Nice, roomy bedroom.

The master bedroom
is just amazing.

- It's massive.
- It's massive.

So, this big opening
is our pocket door here

that slides into that wall.

So, when you come in,
we've got the 72-inch vanity.

This is the big,
free-standing tub

with the nice filler

- that's gonna be really pretty.
- So excited about that.

- Walk-in shower.
- Shower.

What if,

instead of tile,

we, uh...

we put glass block in there?

So what we could do,
if you wanted,

is we could, uh,
half wall it off

you know, so all the private
parts are behind the wall.

- Yeah.
- So we could cut it off here.

We could have an opening

and do a piece of glass
cut to fit it.

That would be great.

That was a good suggestion.

The front door
was a good suggestion.

All good things.

With some new decisions
made on the layout,

we're going full blast
on construction.

We've got windows going in,
the siding going up.

We're getting
the fence posts started.

There's all kinds
of work going on

because there's so much to do,

and we don't have
that much time.

I'm so excited.

This house is gonna be such
an awesome project for us.

And it is literally
right next door to my house.

And I'm super happy to say

we're making
great progress at Hosbrook.

We've got the sliding doors

that will lead
to the back of the house in,

one bathroom
that's completely roughed in.

We're working on the trim
inside and out.

And the big question now

is what to do
with those super-steep stairs.

Mom's not gonna win
on the spiral staircase idea

because it's just
not practical.

So Lenny and I
are hashing out ways

to make them more
user-friendly.

So, when we do
the new staircase,

it's gonna come
from the wall to the brick?

Um, I mean, do you want it to go
as wide as the brick?

I mean, it'd look pretty cool.

So our plan is, we're gonna
take out the stairs completely.

We're gonna move
the header back,

and then we're gonna rebuild
a new staircase.

So it'll still all be open,

but the stairs will have
a much more gradual incline.

We've got so much
going on here today.

Drywall is almost done,

but they're still
mudding the seams.

Siding's done
on three sides of the house.

On the front,
we still have to put up the trim

before we begin siding there.

Out back, we're getting
the dirt pile out of the way

so we can start on the deck.

There's definitely a lot
of things going on at the house.

So, I talked Mina into coming
to the state fair with me.

- It happened.
- Yep.

State fair's really not
her thing.

You know the reason
we come to the fair?

Because the fair is Indiana.

And we build houses
in Indiana.

This is our home.

This is how
you get the flavor

of what we need to do
for people.

We don't ride rides.

- We'll get sick.
- Yeah.

I'm afraid of heights.

I'll get nauseous
and ruin the day.

And I'm not sure
who put those rides together.

But what we can do

is we can go play
some of the games of chance.

- Yeah!
- Nice work!

I got it on the first try!

Nice work!

- Oh! I got five!
- Wow!

Big winner! Big winner!

Big winner, winner, winner,
winner, winner right there!

All right. And look at the size
of the prize!

Right there. She won it.
She done it. Go shopping.

- He's got a hole in his back.
- We can fix that.

So, Mom came in a lot
more excited than me.

We did do some fun stuff.

We ate a lot of food.
We did a lot of cool stuff.

Are you sure
you don't want help?

I got it.

I'm feeling good
about my situation here.

We're back at the house
on Hosbrook today,

and things
are really coming along.

We're doing lots
and lots of painting.

Inside, the kitchen cabinets
are going up

because the ceilings
are really high in there,

so we're gonna do
double-stacked uppers.

If you did,
uh, a dark cherry or an oak,

it would feel like it was kind
of, like, looming over you.

- Right.
- But with a nice,

high-gloss white, it's just
gonna feel airy and light.

It's gonna be really cool.

And to contrast all that white
in the kitchen,

we'll do a really
cool organic project

in the living room.

So, we had these huge
floor joists already

that we pulled
from an old house we worked on

and didn't know
what to do with.

I think reclaimed lumber
is a great look for anyone.

And it's not hard to do.

We had them all pre-cut
exactly how they fit.

And really all we had to do
was come in

and put them into place
and nail them in.

- But I think that looks cool.
- Yeah.

And by putting
this reclaimed joist lumber

going from the ceiling
down to the floor,

it's like we brought
that whole element

of the ceilings,
which is really cool.

It's like we've brought it down
into the room.

- Good thing we saved that lumber.
- Yeah.

There's this really cool lady
that lives on our street,

and she also has
an awesome vintage shop

that's on the alley
behind our street.

- All right.
- Yay.

So our job is to find
something for Hosbrook

that goes on the shelves.

- Okay.
- I measured the shelves.

- Okay.
- So we have parameters.

Okay.

And it has all kinds
of cool stuff,

like vintagey,
reclaimed, antique...

- Architectural salvage.
- Just cool.

So much cool stuff.

That kind of stuff
would jive...

Yes.
- ...in Hosbrook.

- I like these.
- You like those?

- Yeah.
- I like those.

And they're the right size,
'cause we have 12 inches high.

Ooh, ooh, ooh.
Look at these guys.

- Those are kind of fun.
- I like these.

I like those.

- The spools?
- These will fit.

They're 11 1/4.

'Cause I think
this all works together.

See how the metal in the train
matches the metal in this?

And then the wood in this

matches the wood
in the dumbbells.

See how we're telling
a story of metal to wood?

I like all that, the different
shapes and heights.

- Yeah.
- All right.

- Good work.
- You're done?

I could do a lot more damage,
but I feel like

this is a good place to--
It's a good stopping point.

So many amazing things,

and we found some great stuff
that we're gonna take with us.

- Yay!
- Project over.

Nice.

It's mayhem,
but it's productive.

Oh, my God!

We really got to do
the hard sell.

There's just a lot left to do

before we move
the furniture in tomorrow.

We're at Hosbrook hustling.

That's what we're doing today.

- Hustling.
- We are hustling.

Hosbrook's a huge project.

It's got a huge yard.

Just installing
the fence, it's--

The lot is 180 feet long

and then 40 across the front
and the back.

420 feet of just fence.

That's a lot of fence.

We have tile finishing
in the bathroom.

Flooring is going down,

and our lovely butcher block
counters are getting installed.

And they are so gorgeous.

The butcher block countertops
and the clean, white cabinets

feel like updated farmhouse
to me.

It feels very homey,
very warm.

It's mayhem,
but it's productive.

We are really cutting it close
on this one.

We need to get it done.

We have a couple
that has been

stalking the house
for a hot minute.

And they love it,
and they love the street.

And they're young and awesome
and just had a baby.

And they want the house,
and they want to move in.

And they wanted to do that,
like, a month ago.

There's just a lot left to do

before we move
the furniture in tomorrow.

This doesn't look
like it's more together

than when I saw it last.

It definitely looks
less together.

We found a gable end vent
in the Hosbrook house.

So what we're gonna do

is we're going to
put a frame around it,

put a mirror behind it,
and then put it in the house.

And that sounds really easy.

It's not that simple.

We had to use the mend plates
to put the frame together,

glue the old medallion
into the middle of it,

and then mirror
the piece of glass.

Right.
There's a lot of steps.

But it's more fun when you help.
It's just more fun.

I'm just here
for entertainment.

So...

boom.

Boom.

All right.
And now...

- It's perfect!
- Good?

- Lovely.
- Oh, my gosh! Yay!

All right.
Let's go!

- Yay!
- Project over.

Nice!

It's a super exciting day,

because all of our pretty
furniture is coming,

which means
we're almost done.

And this was
a really big project.

Furnishing a house this large
requires a lot of furniture.

2,600 square feet
worth of stuff,

and really stylish stuff.

That is awesome.

If you don't fill
the space adequately,

your furniture won't say
what you want it to say.

So the way
we put furniture in it

really had to be able
to tell the story of,

"This is what each space does."

- Think fast.
- Oh!

It worked.

Oh, my God!

Ready, set, go!

- That one's heavy.
- Yep.

This is probably
like a 15-foot rug.

Yeah.

So, we have
some industrial elements,

and we have
some barn elements.

So we're gonna call this
our industrial barn house.

There's, like, a hint
of steampunk to it,

I think with all the lighting
and the different metals.

- Mm-hmm.
- But then, upstairs,

it gets even, like,
a smidge more charming.

So, the couple
that's interested in the house

just had a brand-new baby.

So to really kind of,
like, hit home,

"This house
is perfect for you,"

we gave the baby a play room
and a nursery.

So we really got to do
the hard sell,

get this couple over here
to look at it,

and hopefully they're as
interested as we think they are.

Hook 'em.

Oh. I was like,
"What are you doing?"

- We're gonna hook 'em.
- We're gonna hook 'em.

With that baby room. We're gonna
hook 'em with that baby room.

That's awesome.

I think this house is going
to be the one for them.

Nothing can be more fun than
renovating the house next door.

I know the perfect couple
for Hosbrook, Zack and Meghan.

Zack and Meghan
love this neighborhood,

and they've been stalking
any available homes on Hosbrook

for months,
especially this one.

I'm Zack Gillam.

This is my wife,
Meghan Gillam.

We live in Indianapolis
in a little condo.

And we love it there, but it's
time for our family to grow,

so we are looking
for something bigger and better.

They've been looking
for the perfect home

in the perfect spot.

I think this house is going
to be the one for them.

When was the last time
you guys saw the house?

Three weeks ago? A month ago?

Are you ready?

Oh, that's awesome.

I love the front door.

- You like the color?
- Yes.

- A little color.
- Okay.

This is the most expensive house
we've ever purchased,

and it was a disaster.

But now, after some new siding,
new paint, new fence,

new front entrance,
new yard,

and pretty much new everything,
it looks beautiful.

So, better than when you saw it

- Yes. A lot better.
- Okay.

- Totally different.
- Looks like a house now.

It's a little different.

Did you notice anything
about the sidewalk?

It's on the other side.

There you go!
It's on the other side.

So, the old entrance
used to be over there.

And we pulled it over
to this side.

- Yay.
- So, are we ready to go inside?

- Let's do this.
- All right.

Oh, wow.

- This is awesome.
- Wow.

Love the ceilings.

And the floors.

So, this is
your grand entryway.

It's huge.

Yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna do a--

I got a little dizzy there.

We opened up the wall
separating the old office

to the living room
to make a real entryway

and to create an open flow
into the rest of the house.

And you kind of end up
with two seating areas.

I like it.

I like it a lot.

Everything in here was
five different kinds of flooring

and different levels.

I could totally see us
having parties in here.

Everything was, like,
burgundy and green

and just dirty.

- Ugly.
- Yeah.

I mean, it just feels so big.

You could fit
so many people in here

and feel like you have
your own space, still, so...

You guys see yourself
on this, like--

Yeah, take a little seat
on the comfy couch.

And then, you know, like,
you watch the game

over there or over there.

You're a Realtor,
so you work from home a lot.

I do that. I do.

So do you want to see your--
your new office?

- I do want to see my office.
- This is all yours.

- Come see your office.
- Yeah.

Peek around this corner.

You have your first-floor
office, den.

Oh, yeah.

- I could see myself in here.
- I like these chairs.

Take a seat
in your chair over there.

Now this is awesome.

Okay, yay.
It's time to go upstairs.

Okay.

So, I don't know
if you noticed,

but one of the things--
The staircase

was like climbing
a ladder before.

It kind of ended
right about here.

So we pulled the staircase out
to make it reasonable.

- Yes.
- And then backed this up.

The headroom used to be
way over here.

- So...
- That's awesome.

...much more functional.

Your brand-new play room!

This is awesome.

You can have little
tea parties with the baby.

Yeah. Rock it out.

And you've got kind of
the theme going through

with the triangles
and the arrows and--

Well, and I love
the large oinker.

And the giant pig
that we won at the state fair

that we just threw in,
'cause it's really soft and fun.

This is your daughter's
play room.

Do you want to see
your daughter's bedroom?

- Uh, yeah.
- Okay.

Shut up.

So cute!

- More awesome wallpaper.
- More awesome wallpaper.

Little teepee.

- So, master bedroom?
- Yeah. Where will we live?

Oh, my gosh.
You guys are gonna lose it.

We opened up
the back two windows

to create an entrance to the new
second-story addition,

including a new master suite
and a second-floor bathroom.

- Oh.
- Ta-da!

- Oh, wow.
- Oh, man.

Right now, this is probably
like the size

of the whole upstairs
of our condo, like, so...

You're just a kid
in a candy store.

Like, "Look,
I can wave my arms!

There's so much space!"

The rest of the house
felt really big.

'Cause the ceilings
are so high.

And you've got just enough light
with these windows.

This whole section
is your walk-in closet.

That's awesome.

So, take a look
at your new bathroom.

You go first. It's your--

Oh, yes.

All right.
Totally getting in the tub.

- Get in the tub.
- Just get in!

- Climb on in.
- Just go ahead, get in.

The bathroom's a big deal
for any buyer.

Almost as big
as the look of the kitchen.

Exactly.
And adding in the double vanity

and soaking tub
is a huge selling point.

A master bath has to have
that sense of sanctuary

to really sell the house.

So you lie in the bathtub
while she takes a shower.

Everybody's happy.

And it's only--
It's a PG window.

So this is probably my second
favorite room in the house.

My first favorite
is the kitchen.

- Okay.
- Okay, let's go downstairs.

- Ta-da!
- Oh, my gosh.

It's massive.

Ah, this sink is awesome.

It's another mike.
Here we go.

Testing, tap, tap, tap.

- Is this thing on?
- That's awesome.

The old kitchen
was two additions

pieced together
really poorly.

So we just
tore it all out out

and opened it up to include
a huge dining space.

Baby bathtub.

- Baby bathtub.
- Yes, exactly!

This is awesome.

Let's go out in the backyard.

'Cause you can do all kinds
of spins out here, dude.

You can do,
like 50 cartwheels in a row.

You could just--

Sweet.
Loving the lights.

Just space for days.

It's a very "Titanic" moment
on the edge of the deck.

What's your guys'
favorite room in the house?

Um, probably the master bath.

But I love it all.

I like the play room,
and the kitchen,

- obviously, is awesome.
- All right.

Well, I know you guys have
a little bit of thinking to do,

but don't think too long,
'cause we've had some people

trying to swoop in
on your house.

We're nervously, anxiously--
We liked it, obviously.

But it's all happening
right now.

So we're gonna kind of
think about it and--

- Take a breath.
- She's gonna think about it,

and we'll go from there.

- See if she'll give it to you.
- Yeah. We'll go from there.

All right.
Let's go back inside.

So, we bought this house
next door to mine for $130,000.

Our renovation costs
were around $160,000.

So with fees and closing costs,

it brings our total investments
to around $300,000.

And happily, Meghan and Zack
did buy the house for $319,000,

giving us a profit of $19,000.

And now we have wonderful
new neighbors.

It's just two doors
away from me.

And Steve and I are like,
"We should just keep it

and live there,
sell our house."

That's a problem for us.

We really like the houses
we build.

There isn't a single one

that I wouldn't be
perfectly happy to live in.

Perfectly happy,
every single one.
