Good Bones (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 10 - New Clients in the Countryside - full transcript

Mina and Karen travel out of downtown Indianapolis and into the countryside to do a home renovation. The Angles family feels their house is very closed-off and they want help opening it up.

I'm Mina,
and this is my mom, Karen.

And we're renovating Indianapolis,

one house at a time.

Every rotten, nasty house
that we see...

- Oh!
- Holy moly.

...we try and buy.

Then with a little vision... And a lot of hard work...

...we create beautiful homes
for our neighbors.

- Oh, my gosh.
- Wow.

I don't want to build
crappy houses for my neighbors.

I just don't.

- Are you crying already?
- It looks amazing.

Every tragic house...

There's the bathtub!

...deserves
a second chance.

Holy God.
This smells awful.

Because underneath
all that mess,

we might find
some really good bones.

This has really been
a nice walk.

- Come on.
- Grace, come here.

Oh, why are your dogs
being so good

and my dog's being a jerk?

- I don't know.
- Ted!

It isn't
their usual M.O.I know.

We do have our next project
to go check out today.

- Excellent.
- Are you excited?

Am excited.
All right.

Let's get
these heathens inside and...

Come on you guys.... load up in the truck.

Come on, Grace.

We have got a big project
ahead of us.

We're taking this duplex

and turning it into
a single family home,

and it's just east of State,

which is an area
that's a little...

- It's transitional still.
- Yeah.

- It needs some love.
- It's coming around, though.

This house we're going to

is one of two that we bought
on this block on Woodlawn.

And the challenge
for these two properties

is that they are
east of State.

But I feel like
if Fountain Square
is the frontier,

east of State is the
territory beyond the frontier.

Well, I think the nice thing, though,

we have one renovation
two doors down. Right.

And that one's kind of
standalone on the block,

it's the only house
that's renovated. Right.

So, doing this second house,

I think is not only gonna help
the first house sell,

but help people
kind of buy into...

East of State.... east of State
is changing.

So, we've done this before.

We've been in a neighborhood
that wasn't that attractive

and we stayed
in the neighborhood

and we kept building houses,

and more and more people
came and bought the houses.

I think this one's
going to be tricky,

um, because it's
a one-bedroom duplex currently.

But if we turn it
into 2-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath,

making it a single family
is probably our best bet.

I mean, I think it already has
a certain level of charm.

Obviously we need to
reconfigure the porch
and the staircase

if we're going to make it
a single family.

Yeah.
Right?

Just pick a door.
Any door.

Just give it
- a little oomph.
- A little oomph.

Aww, this is adorable.

Just 'cause it has an arch?

Yeah, I love arches

I mean,
this door's pretty cute.

I like
the style of the door,

but I love
- the glass doorknobs.
- The handle, the knobs.

This is a little,
itty-bitty house.

Not the tiniest double
we've ever had, but close.

Right now, there's just
these tiny little rooms

all one by one
down the length of the house.

So, this is a mirror image
of the other side, right?

Uh, to my recollection.

- It looks pretty square.
- Yeah.

The foundation
- is in pretty decent shape.
- Mm-hmm.

The floors aren't sagging
dramatically anywhere.

My guess is,
our ceiling and our floor joists

go what I'd call
"East/West."

So, this is
a supporting wall.

So this is
a support wall.

So,
to make the rooms join,

we need to do a header
coming this way. Yeah.

All right,
so my general idea is,

we'll blow out that wall.

All this space will be
living room space,

but this will all
pretty much be,

for the most part,
one big space.

Okay, front two spaces,

obviously open up
between the two units.

I'm going to use my baseball bat
as a pointer now.

- How cute is this?
- Oh, really dirty.

She's like, talking to me,
pointing with the baseball bat.

I mean, I would switch that out
for some high windows.

Look at
that little door thing.

I have on order this--

Stop pointing at me
with that.

You got really close
to my face.

She was getting real big
for her britches with her--

That baseball bat's
going to be--

I'm going to make
a holster for it,

and I'm just gonna wear it.

We've got
the world's tiniest kitchen.

It is.
It's itty-bitty.

Let's see
what's for dinner.

- Why did you smell that?
- Did you smell that?

I can clean these up,
and I can use these.

There's nothing wrong
with these.

Mom.
I can.

You can just
buy a new pan.

I want to find the pot
that goes--The bathroom's not bad.

Yeah?

I like this glass.

You can do something with that, right?

Look at you.

Put some paint thinner
on it.

Finding projects for me
It's pretty glass.

The bathroom,
there's shampoo and...

Toilet paper.... toothpaste
and toilet paper,

like a fresh wall
of toilet paper.

That's one of the weird things
about what we do is...

You get a little glimpse.

Yeah, you get a little glimpse
into people's lives.

This back part of the duplex,

where the bath
and the kitchen are now,

will become
a large master suite,

and we'll have
a second bedroom

on the other side
of the house.

Looks like
a fairly new gas meter.

I feel like
I'm ready for anything.

Yeah, good thing
- you got your baseball bat.
- I know, I really like--

I think
we should have this--

So, no backdoor
on this side,

- but we got one over here.
- Yeah.

- Okay. Oh, look!
- Doesn't look
completely closed.

I get a dinosaur.

So, the first side
of the house we went on

had some things in it,
but it wasn't that bad.

The other unit
has a backdoor,

which was not
very securely locked.

And that side
is a little funkier.

Trash.

Yeah, this is way... yuckier.

Trash.

Let's go check out
the basement.

I really do feel better
with this baseball bat.

This is not bad, Mina.

The cinderblock on the left
looks really good.

Floor joists
look pretty good.

Yeah, the block's
not in bad shape at all.

So, hopefully
this is going to help

significantly keeping us
under a reasonable budget.

Yeah,
it looks good down here.

It should be
very budget-friendly.

All right, let's go.

Hmm.

It seems narrower
on this side.

Ooh!
Check out that toilet.

Oh, you scared me.

That's bad.

This one's definitely worse
than the other side.

I like
these medallions.

Those look plastic.

I know, but I can do
something with those.

Yeah, ooh, look at all
the treasures in here.

Don't touch anything
in that.

I didn't touch
too much in there.

You touched it all.

I just touched two things--

an address book
and an old plastic wrapper.

Just keep your hands
in your pockets.

Hands in the pockets.

Mina likes to make
a little bit of fun of me,

good-natured fun,

for the things
I collect in the houses.

That dinosaur is so big!

The dinosaur
might just disappear.

Dinosaur's
not disappearing.

One day,
- it just might disappear.
- I have a baseball bat.

That dinosaur's
not disappearing.

Boom.

Window it is.

I'm going to embrace
my inner tad.

What?

Are we ready?

I-- go crazy, lady.

Oh, I don't know if you're
gonna be able to get this.

Are you kidding me?

Door's-- whoo!

No,
I'm not kidding you.

Are we ready?

I-- go crazy, lady.

Oh, I don't know if you're
going to be able to get this.

Are you kidding me?

Door's-- whoo!

No, I'm not kidding you.

Good job.

Ta-da!
Good job.

You don't
- want to touch this.
- No, okay.

Structure-wise
and scope of work size,

this is the least scary house
we've probably ever done.

The unknown about
what we're gonna be
able to sell it for--

that's what
I'm kind of worried about.

So, I think we're gonna really
have to manage our finances

extra... uh...

Carefully?... penny-pinchingly?

The neighborhood
is so different,

even though we're right by
Fountain Square.

All I'm saying is,
I don't know.

I need to do a little bit
more research to see--Okay.

It is probably gonna be

one of the nicest houses
on the block,

but we bought it
for $15,000.

I think if we can stay
under $95,000--

so keep it
under $110,000?
Okay.

We may make $3,000,
or we may make $30,000.

Honestly, I'm not
super-concerned
about the profit,

as long as
we don't lose money.

I think getting some more houses
on the block fixed up...

I'm with you.... is worth it
in the long run,

even if we don't make
a ton out of it.

I just don't
want to lose money.

Yeah.
That's my goal
on this one.

We won't lose money. Okay.

We're just
gonna have to be careful.

We may not be getting granite.

Dare I say, laminate?

I feel ugly
just saying it, but...

it might be appropriate.

Morning.

- Good morning.
- Morning.

Today is demo day
at Woodlawn.

Let's have
some enthusiasm.

We will-- why do you
have a baseball bat?
And a dinosaur?

I got a lot going on here
- this morning.
- Yeah, you do.

That should set the tone
for the day.

Oh, nice.

This is a little
itty-bitty house.

- Itty-bitty.
- Demo it in one day.

And it just needs to be
stripped down to the bones.

It's going to be demo'd
in like 20 minutes.

We say that.

Then, like, 10 days later,

we're like,
"Well, things got complicated."

The dumpster is supposed
to be here in 13 minutes,

but they regularly
lie to us,

so, start tearing the trim off
on both sides

and make a pile,

and we'll give it
15-20 minutes,

and if it's
still not here,

then we'll roll up
the dump truck

and just figure it out.

Hey! Dumpster!

Whoo-hoo!

I think he's gonna back it in
right here.

I don't know
where he's going.

It's like, "Hoorah,
the dumpster's here."

And he makes a turn
in a different direction.

I'm like, "Wha- no!
No-no! No! Come back!"

If someone else gets another
dumpster before we do...

- heads are rolling.
- Uh-oh.

The baseball bat is gonna be
put into use.

I do not typically chase
dumpsters down the street,

but we've been having some
issues with our dumpster folk.

Are you not
our dumpster?

You're supposed to give us
a dumpster yesterday.

No one's here--
we're all waiting to work.

He was like, "I'm sorry,
this one's not yours."

Not ours.

I'm trying to
make it ours.

Can you be?

He's like,
"I'll call dispatch.

Boop-boop-boop.
Nope, sorry."

Then I stormed away.

She's gonna write
a strongly-worded letter.

- All right, let's go.
- Okay.

Anywho, we got our dumpster eventually.

Thank you so much.

So, toilet's on
- the other side of this wall?
- Yep.

Well,
there's like 6 guys here,

so after
we rock-paper-scissors,

hopefully I won't be the one
to have to do it.

Here we go.

Want to take a little peeksie
at your toilet?

That's awful!

I told you it was bad.

Hey, fellas,
come here real quick!

We have a very intricate way
of dealing with a toilet.

And that's through
rock-paper-scissors.

The most noble
of traditions.

Rock, paper,
scissors, shoot.

Cut you-- you're up.

- All right, let's go.
- Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.

They developed a whole system
for playing this game,

and it sounds to me like
a system for avoiding work.

Because I feel like

I could have just
gotten the toilet out

in the amount of time that
they took to do this whole--

Mom, you got to have
a little bit of fun.

- All right.
- Just a little bit.

Samurai Bun
versus Man Bun.

Here we go.

On shoot?
Yep.

- All right.
- Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.

- Ohh!
- Oh!

The boys rock, papers, scissors
whenever we do houses

for who has to carry out
the nasty toilet.

Samurai bun
versus man bun.

I was sweating it out
in that final round.

It was like,
"I can't lose this."

Definitely got to be
Tad's problem.

Rock, paper, scissors,
shoot!

Ohh!
Oh!

And I couldn't believe it.

Go get that poo toilet!

All right!

You don't want gloves?

Watch out
'cause I think I'm--

Oh. You see that?

Oh. I'm leaving.

Oh, God!

That's sick.

So, we've found
a little bit of termite damage

along the sill up here,
but it's really--

It's pretty minimal,

so we're gonna be able
to remove

the five, six pieces of wood
it's affecting,

put some new framing in,
and we should be okay.

Now that we're done with
the demo over at Woodlawn,

the next step is framing.

Most of the walls
are down at this point,

so we can visualize
most things.

The only thing
that I'm kind of concerned about

is the east unit,

the kitchen
that's in the back--

the floor is just like,

you can take the back of
a hammer and chip at it.

Oh,
- that's not a big deal.
- No.

A little bit of
a rotten floor--

Easy peasy.

Yeah.

Compared to some of
the other things we've seen,

not bad at all.

So, today we're here
at Mina's office

and we're working on
- the floor plan for Woodlawn.
- Yep.

So, I think we've got
this floor plan down.

I just want to make sure
we don't have any changes

before we start framing
next week.

First of all, the front's
gonna have a dramatic change.

Instead of having two entrances
to the duplexes,

we're gonna have a new
front door on the left side

and then three big windows
on the right side of the house,

and it's gonna look like
a completely different home.

As soon as
we walk in the front door,

tons of storage space
on the left,

wall on the right,

so we've created
a little bit of an entryway,

and then as you get
pulled into the house,

we've got our dining room
right in front of us,

and then as you swing
and open to the right,

a gorgeous kitchen.

We're gonna have
ceiling-height cabinets,

a huge breakfast bar

that I think will easily fit
six bar stools.

We're gonna have to put in
a new header

where the center wall was

so that we can keep
the entire kitchen and
living room area open

where we'll be able to fit
a nice big couch,

entertainment stand,
tons of seating options.

- It's gonna be a party.
- I feel like we should have
a great party here.

- It's gonna be a party.
- This is gonna be a great house
for entertaining.

And it's so perfect

because all the public space
is in the front. Right.

And then everything
that's private,

that bathrooms and the bedrooms,
are in the back.

So, when you walk down
the hallway,

we've got the master suite
on the back of the house

as private as possible.

Off the master suite,
we've got this amazing bathroom

with a big garden soaking tub,
shower, double vanity,

we've got the high skinny window
in the tub shower

to let natural light
even into the bathroom,

which is gonna make it feel
so much bigger.

And then kind of
the middle chunk of the house

is the second bedroom,
we've got a second bathroom,

and then the laundry closet
back there, as well.

I think we've created
- a great floor plan here.
- Yeah.

I think we've crammed
a lot of features

into a little tiny house.

You're gonna get a lot of bang
- for your buck.
- Absolutely.

I'm really excited
about this.

We need to get the floor plan
to Lenny and build a house.

Boom.

Now that we have
our new plans ready,

the guys are busy
framing the new layout.

But we can't open up
the entire space like we want

until we get
the header installed.

The LVL arrives!

It's so exciting to see Jordy
in the truck

with all these giant pieces
of LVL on them.

Oh, I got them.

LVL is
laminated veneer lumber,

so they're super-strong.

And we need to put
two pieces of LVL together

to be strong enough to support

this amazing open-concept
floor plan

that Mina's come up with.

Let's just get it in!

All right.
I'm gonna stand out of the way.

Yeah, I'm not gonna pretend
- I can help carry that.
- Yeah.

Woodlawn used to be
a really tiny duplex.

Being able
to open it up with the LVL

just creates the idea
of so much more space,

and that's just how
people live nowadays.

How much do you think
that weighs, Jesse?

Slide it this way?

No, just walk that way
when we pick it up

so I can walk it around.

800 pounds. So each of
these guys has 200 pounds.

Easy peasy.

I can lift like
an 80-pound bag of concrete.

And it's
- really hard to do.
- Right.

That's as good as it gets.800 pounds.

It's heavy.
It's heavy.

You got it from there?

Oy.

Help your boy with it.

Jesse's like
a powerhouse up there.

We got it.

Oh, gosh.

Ready?
No, don't you touch it!

Whoa!

Oy.

Help your boy with it.

We are at Woodlawn,

and the guys are putting
in the giant LVL

that's gonna support
the whole house

so we can open up
the walls.

Oh, gosh. Ready?
No, don't you touch it!

Whoa!

Got it.

There was one guy on one end

and four guys
on the other end.

That didn't seem very fair,

but, like, I wasn't lifting,

so I'm not the one
to complain.

Good job, guys.

Ready? 1, 2, 3.

A little more,
a little more.

You're off up here.

We're dropping it.

Just leave it there.

I really am no help
picking them up.

I'm just not.
- I'm no help.
- They're very heavy.

We have lots of
big, strong men,
and let's face it--

I mean--Well, it's not even that
we aren't strong enough,

we're too short.

We're too short
to effectively help

lift it up
into the attic space.

You got your workout
for the day?

So far at Woodlawn,

we've demo'd out
the entire space,

and framing has started.

Now that the LVL's in,
it's gonna continue.

And once
that gets wrapped out,

then all the trades come in

and do electrical, plumbing,
and HVAC.

Today, we're hanging out
at a coffee shop

right around the corner
from our house

and we're
trying to figure out

how we want to finish off Woodlawn.

I know you like to be
very concrete,

and I like to have
this aesthetic, this idea.

So...
This is your idea
for the house.

This is my idea.

So this is--

This is--This is our house?

This is our house.
So this is classic.

Pull it down in the front
and tip it a little.

A top hat
is very classic.

That's what we're gonna
give to the house.

We're gonna give it some drama
in a tailored way,

a little whimsy,
and glamorous.

It goes along pretty well

with some of the things
that I've picked,

and I want to pack
just, like,

a bunch of awesomeness
into it.

We have an open concept--

dining room, kitchen,
living room.
Mm-hmm.

So the incredible thing

you're gonna see
is our kitchen.

So I want this really nice,
like, smoky gray cabinet,

and this is gonna make you
so happy.

That's awesome, right?

I found amazing cabinet knobs
that look expensive, right?

And I found them online
for like $1 a piece.

And then just in-your-face-wow,
incredible countertop.

Uh-huh.
And I want to do it
for really cheap,

so figure that out.

Sales prices in this
Southeast Indy neighborhood

just east of State

really vary
fairly significantly,

so I'm not saying we 100%

are gonna have to
sell it for less,

but it's a very realistic possibility,

so we need to plan for that
in our purchases,

so we need to be
a little bit more conservative

on what we'll spend on
some of the items in the house.

Which leads me to

the next budget-friendly
saving option.

This flooring is really nice,
it's really durable,

it's a laminate, and I think
it's 99 cents a square foot.

Great.

Penny McPincher here.

Penny McPincher.

I'll squeeze them
till they scream.

- How do we feel about this?
- This is beautiful.

Where are you wanting
to put it?

I feel like this is
- a bedroom accent wall.
- Okay.

This is gonna make it
feel like you're just
wrapped up and cozy.

I like that it has
- so much texture to it.
- Yeah.

All right,
so let's figure out

exterior paint colors
for the house.

Let's see.

These ones
are a little bit... This is good.

- This is better.
- In here.

- The middle.
- Yes, go with the middle.

All right, so,
- that one for the house.
- Go with the middle.

And then for the trim,
I think, you know,

- something like around here.
- Yeah.

And then a front door--
blue?
Yeah.

We have that small detail
on the two peaks. Here.

It's a little risky,
but if we're gonna do that--

These three
I kind of like together--

the blue, the green,
and, like, the golden color?

It's like a color wheel.

We're going to take
what was a shabby duplex

and make it really stand out
so buyers take notice.

So we're gonna
push the envelope

to give the feel
of luxury finishes

without breaking the bank.

Because prices
in this neighborhood

are just starting to edge up,

we want to lure buyers in
with this feeling of luxury.

But without the price tag.

And so because
we're starting in this new area,

we really
need to set the tone.

- This is our flagship.
- Yeah.

We are at Woodlawn today,

and it just looks
so much bigger

now that it's not
a teeny duplex anymore.

Putting that LVL in
was crucial.

That's what allowed us

to open up this double
into a single

and make all these spaces
look wide-open.

I feel like most people
don't go in and are like,

"Yay, 2x4s!" Or
"Yay, quarter round!"

But I think probably,
for us,

I walk into a house,
and I'm like,

"Yeah, the framing's done!

You guys are awesome!"

I'll hold them in place
while you nail?

Sure.

So, today, Mom and I
are assembling the half-wall

that is going to support
the breakfast bar

between the kitchen
and the living room.

That's done.

All right.

The other support will be
the under cabinets

that are on the other side.

It'll get drywalled
on the room side,

and it'll look great.

Like, in my head,
it didn't look this spacious.

I thought it was still
gonna feel small.

But because you've got
the breakfast bar, living room,

we actually have a dining room,
which we never get,

and the kitchen,

the space looks really big.

And an entryway
with tons of closet. Yep.

So next up, we got to pick up
our doors and windows.

Get those installed
- so we can finish rough in.
- Yep.

All right.
All right.

Cool.
Perfect.

My biggest worry, currently,
is the framing happened,

I think, slightly quicker
than anticipated at Woodlawn,

and now we're just
waiting around

for the doors and windows
to come in.

Because until
the windows come in,

we're at a standstill.

No plumbing,
electrical, HVAC,

because people
will just come steal it.

Then I'll just call
every day.

"Are our doors and windows in?"
"Hey, are they in yet?"

"Hey, we're waiting on
our doors and windows."

So, you want to see
more behind-the-scenes footage

of our renovations
and floor plans?

You know,
where Mom harasses me

about the toilet placement
and pocket doors...

And the triangle
in the kitchen!

Today we are checking in
at Woodlawn.

There's a lot of stuff
that's happened.

The doors and windows
were delivered,

so those are all
getting installed.

We're getting all the siding up
on the walls,

and we're in
the home stretch.

So glad the windows
finally came in,

'cause we were gonna get
really far behind.

Now that they're in,
we can complete all rough ins,

get to spray foaming
and drywall.

- And then sell the house.
- Yeah.

We're a local antique shop today

and we're trying to find
some cool pieces for Woodlawn

that kind of fit in with
the vibe we've got going there.

So, I think we need to find
some like, cool, fun pieces

that are like
artsy, eclectic,

maybe even
a little whimsical.

They've got a lot of
cool stained glass.

I like these guys.

It'd be good if they were
next to each other.

They'd kind of
echo the window.

- Mm-hmm.
- Fill the space.

I think it fits
with the house.
It does.

So, it's the place
that you could go in once

and then come back
a second time and be like,

"I didn't even know
this room was here!"

- She's so judgy.
- She pulls me into this room
and is like,

"But this thing
that I've been looking at..."

You love this?

I've been
lusting after this.

Where do you want
to put it?

And it's this massive, like,
Big Ben-style bird cage.

We could both fit in it.

Maybe in the living room?

Maybe on the side of
the dining room?

Are we putting
real birds in it?

I'm putting you
in there.

I don't like birds.

I backtracked.

I don't know why I said
anything about birds.

- I don't want birds in there.
- Well, you know,
I have lots of--

We're not putting
fake birds.

This is just beautiful
as-is.

Great. I'm gonna agree.

Done. Walk away.

No birds.

Yes.

All right,
we've spent enough time here.

It's getting dangerous.
Let's go.

I think we found
some really cool stuff

that's gonna look really good
in the space.
Mm-hmm.

And I feel like
it was a successful trip.

Agreed.

Woodlawn is a small house,

so construction
is moving along fast.

The electrical and plumbing
are going in,

we've got drywall up
and mudded,

and the exterior painting
is nearly finished.

Why do we have a house
that's not the home team?

Like, why?

I'm really not sure
how it happened,

but I do know we picked out
these colors together.

I know we-- But how--At the same time.

Like, you were there.

Maybe if
we lived in Green Bay,

like, it'd, you know,
sell like hot cakes.

But we are not.
We're in Indianapolis.

But this is an easy solution.
I like the green.

- I love the green.
- I like the cream.

I like the handsome man
standing on the porch.

I was gonna say,
this is--Damn.

Right there.
You know what?

Did you hear what
she just called me?

She called you handsome.

She gave me
a compliment.

We just repaint
the yellow.

That's a very small amount.

- The green and the yellow!
- I don't know
how we ended up with

green and yellow yet again.

Why did we decide a green house
with yellow trim?

The front door's navy blue.

I would want more blue,

so why don't we just do
the yellow the same blue?

I want to go
back to the drawing board.

Oh, you're killing me.

And I want to find another color
to replace that yellow with.

I do.

I'm gonna come back
with a paint fan

after the front door
is painted,

and we will decide then.

And you will see--You said,
"I am going to come back

and then we will decide."

Those are two completely
different things.

Let's go look inside. Okay.

The cabinets
are looking good.

This whole space
is awesome.
I know.

We're still missing
the end panel

so we couldn't put the cabinet
in that goes above the fridge,

but those are supposed to
come in over the weekend.

- All right.
- So, we're checking on them today.

That's good.
I love this.

Don't you like
this little house?

Yeah,
this is a cute house.

There's a lot going on
at Woodlawn right now.

We're in the home stretch.

It actually
looks like a house.

The flooring's going down.

If we didn't tell you
that this floor was laminate,

you wouldn't know it.

That's how nice it looks.

Now that
all the drywall's up

and the walls
are nice and clean and white,

they're gonna be
painted gray today.

We've got some trim
that's still going in,

but then vanities,
toilets, tile,

countertop,
all the fixtures,

and then we're done.

And landscaping.

And then cleaning.
And then staging.

And then we're done.

We're down to the final stretch
in the Woodlawn house.

Everything we're working on now
is finish items.

We've got the faucets,
the bathroom toilets,

and all the other bathroom
fixtures getting installed.

And outside,
the brick masons

are fixing the hole
in the porch wall

where the entrance to the duplex
used to be.

But it doesn't look right.

It's not the same texture
and it's not the same size.

I would like to make it
less noticeable.

I would like the brick
to look more the same.

'Cause it's not like
three bricks.

- It's an opening this big.
- Yeah.

So I think
our best choice is

to skim coat it, concrete,
get it nice and smooth,

and then come back through
and paint it the cream again.

So, you'll have brick
and you'll have smooth concrete,

so it'll make it
even more interesting.

I think it's gonna be cute, actually.

I think
it's gonna look good.

We're just in a time crunch
to do it.

So, we're also in a hurry

to figure out
how to fix our mistake

with the crazy color scheme.

So, clearly, we don't like
- the yellow with the green.
- Right.

We need to find
- something else.
- That was a mistake.

Mom and picked these
paint colors all together

and the chips
looked amazing.

And then after it
all got painted,

we roll up to the house
and realize

these are
the wrong team colors.

I was thinking
somewhere around here.

So I'm gonna go
get some paint.

I don't like it, but sure.

You don't like it?
No.

I mean,
you don't like it at all,

or you just want it
the door color

- and that's your decision?
- The house we were going for
was, like, stately,

and that takes it
from stately with the navy blue

to playful.

But these were not
stately colors.

Paint it.
- Do whatever you want.
- Okay.

All right.

So, the yellow's out.

Teal's in.

I'm gonna put
some more colors on, too.

No, she's not.

You paint it the color,

and it's gonna be
the best color in the world!

It's my favorite.

Repainting the trim
isn't a huge setback,

but it definitely doesn't help
with our time crunch.

We have less than a week
to tackle the finishing touches

and stage this house

before we can
put it on the market.

So we've
got to get moving.

What's going on?

I'm--

Basically, what this is,
is a bulletin board.

On every house,
Mom tries to find something

that was like, already
part of the home

and does some stuff to it

and then
puts it back in the house.

Well, we found these medallions
at Woodlawn.
Mm-hmm.

- So, I cleaned one.
- That's dirty.

I cleaned one, and I put
some crackle paint on it.

That looks cool.

I think it looks
pretty good.

What are you gonna do
with the hole on this one.

My idea is I'm gonna cut out
- this to make a backdrop.
- Yes.

And then I'm gonna put
some of this batting over it

- to make it a little fluffy.
- Uh-huh.

And then I'm gonna put
some burlap over it.

And then I'm gonna put
one layer of this over it.

So, we'll do three.

So, we'll do
one that's burlap,

one that's gold,
- and one that's silver.
- Okay.

I think this is gonna look
really good in the kitchen.

Go ahead,
give it a little glue.

The medallions
are kind of ornate,

so I think they go well
with the kitchen.

And because we added
a little sheen of
silver and gold,

I think it's gonna go
with the knobs and
with the countertop.

I think
it's gonna be good.

Okay, you're good.

Thank you.
Just let it cool.

And then we make two more,
right?
Right.

What do you think?

That looks good.
I think it's kind of fun.

This one actually
did turn out okay.

- Yeah.
- Like, it's cute.

And just-- they're cute.

I always get so excited
when the countertops come in

because you can really see
the kitchen coming together.

Do you need me to help you?
I'm very strong.

- Yeah.
- I'll help.

I don't even care
how much it costs.

This granite
is so pretty.

And for a second,

we were talking about
going with laminate to
keep the costs down

'cause this neighborhood is
a little bit on the edge.

Sometimes you just got to go
with your gut, splurge,

and in this case,
it was totally worth it.

What are you doing?

Painting the trim.

You look like you think
you're in trouble.

I was not trying
to sneak paint the trim.

I was just
painting the trim,

and she
happened to show up.

Everyone else
likes the teal.

No, they don't.
They're just scared of you.

They're scared of me?

So, they humor you.

They're like,
"Oh, the crazy lady
likes the teal.

Oh, looks great,
sure."

I realize it's a bold house,
so we're not unbolding it.

But I think
we're making it slightly safer.

By "we" I mean "me."

The yellow was a mistake.

The teal was a mistake.

So I'm just bringing it back
to home base right here

with a nice cream that matches
the rest of the trim.

And I'm super happy
with it.

All right,
you just be safe.
I will.

Have fun with your bush.

We've been working all day
to get the house ready to show,

and we're not even close
to being done.

It's definitely gonna be
a late night tonight

for us to be able to get
this accent wall finished.

We're creating
a wall in the bedroom

that's gonna be
a real focal point

for the design
in the bedroom.

It's amazing.

I mean, it not only looks like
it has texture,

it actually has texture to it
when you touch it.

I love this.

I think it's gonna
look really cool

once we get the bed
in here.

And we need to get it
on the wall.

The furniture's coming,

so we got to get this up
and get it done tonight.

And it's looking amazing.

- I'm really happy with it.
- Yeah.

That's gonna go
straight through this door

and right around
on the other side of the wall

in the living room.

Today we're at Woodlawn,

and we're putting all

the last awesome finishing
touches on the house.

Voilà.

I'm stronger than you.

You can't make me
hit myself.

I need two hands.

I will let you down gently
if you act right.

If not
you just get dropped.

Furniture's all here,

so we just got to get it
in the house

and start moving it around,
figure out where it all goes.

Poofs!
Poofs.

- Are those your favorite?
- Yeah, I love them.

I love the moving challenges
we give these guys.

Love them.

We've designed the house
and decorated the house

so when you walk in,

everything outside
just kind of disappears

because it's just beautiful
and perfect in there.

This home is going to be
someone's oasis.

Come on in.
Hi!

It's so beautiful.

Our goal tonight is
definitely to sell this house.

So Mom had the awesome idea
to do an open house art show.

You need to make sure
that you can take a bath.

Oh.

It's heavier
than it looks. Yep.

You'd think
with all that open work,

it'd be light, but...

- It's real pretty, though.
- Uh-huh.

After four weeks
of a tough renovation,

we've finished decorating,

and we're finally ready

to show off
our little house on Woodlawn.

We don't have any strong
buyer prospects for the house,

so Mom had the awesome idea
to do an open house art show.

We even got a local artist

to hang his work on the walls

to help lure in
as many folks as possible.

Oh!

It's so beautiful.

That is awesome.

I'll invite some brokers
that I know

to see if they have
any prospective buyers.

Come on in.

We'll bring some of our friends,
and then it's a party.

Oh, wow. Wow.

The porch is perfect.

The table.

The lighting. Yeah.

This is so nice.

Wow. It's exactly what
- we were looking for.
- Yes!

Hi!

- I'm Deanna.
- And I'm Keaton.

And we are here to look at
the house today.

His number-one thing
is a porch.

So I was very happy.

I think right away
that was kind of a "yes."

- Mom, this is Deanna.
- This living room

is, like,
what I was so excited about.

I'm Karen.
Nice to meet you.

My boyfriend is friends
with Deanna and Keaton,

and he knew that they'd been
house hunting for a while.

So this was
the perfect opportunity

for them to come see
one of our homes.

We actually are in
a neighborhood right now

that's kind of similar.

It's an older neighborhood,
and we like that feel.

We like to be a part of
something that's growing.

And what Mina and Karen
are doing is huge.

So it's a little bit
of everything.

I think it's price point,

I think it's style of the home,
I think it's location,

and we're getting in
at a great time

for things
to start growing.

I love the kitchen.

The openness,
to be able to look in.

I like the backsplash
and the countertops.

- It looks nice.
- That looks great.

The great thing is,

IS you can see there's
six bar stools right there.

- Yes.
- And these are
big bar stools.

Yeah.

So if you got
regular-sized ones,

you could easily put eight
people at this bar, easily.

So, we should show you
the rest of the house.

- Yes, let's go.
- Let's go.

I mean,
it's our first home together,

and we want to be smart
about it.

We want to make sure that
we're investing in something

that we're gonna be in
for a couple years.

Oh, wow.
Oh, my God. Yeah.

It's so nice and open
and the lighting and the wall.

So we gave you a little bit
of like 1920s Art Deco glamour

in the back of the house.

And in the front,

you have this really serene,
very tailored,

but still a little bit
of sparkle, right?

- Yep.
- It's a good change-up.

It makes this feel
a little warm.

- I mean, it's the bedroom.
- It's cozy.

It's your resting spot, right.

And so, what we try to do
in a lot of the houses,

like, we have full windows
facing the back,

which is like
your pretty private space.

But on the sides,
because we're in a urban area,

you're usually
pretty close to your neighbor,

so we do the high window.

So still get light in

without looking at maybe
something you don't
want to look at.

Yeah.
Right.

- Bathroom.
- Let's go.

- Let's do it.
- Go check it out.

Oh, wow.

This looks so good.

His and her vanities. Wow.

Look at this tile.

Mina is obsessed
with arabesque.

- I really love it.
- It's beautiful.

I just love
the arabesque tile

'cause I feel like it brings
a lot of drama and charm.

That's a nice-size tub,
too, wow.

I mean,
you're pretty tiny.

I'm not worried about
your fitting.

Yeah.
But you fit
under the head.

Okay.

You need to make sure
that you can take a bath.

You can get in.

You're gonna bend down
in that.

He's a little afraid
of the tub right now.

- But you fit just fine.
- Yeah.

- Lovely.
- I could do this.

All right, let's go on
to the guest bedroom and bath.

Yes, absolutely.

Oh, my gosh,
this is adorable.

This is still a really
good-sized bedroom.

Tons of closet space.

It's light and bright.

I love the fixtures.

And it has the bathroom

that you can access from
the hall or from in here.

Yeah.

It's such a great space
for your guests to see, too,

with the vanity
and the mirrors.

- It's fun.
- Mm-hmm.

It's inviting.

Mina and Karen
did such a good job

with all the wallpapering,
the coloring.

And bathrooms
look incredible, also.

And I think that
it was almost like
going into each room

was more exciting
than the previous one.

Just to see--
you never knew what
was coming next.

So, the only space left
is the backyard.

You guys
want to go out there?

- Yeah! Let's do it.
- All right.

Oh, my gosh,
this so cute.

I'm gonna pretend that I'm you,

and I'm gonna be like,
"this is my house.

I just love it so much.

It is a great space.

I mean, he loves to grill
in the summertime.

We like to have friends over
to cook out.

And for us,
I think a big part is

bringing somebody who wants
to make the neighborhood better

into this neighborhood,
and you guys are doing that,

and we want to be
a part of that, I think.

And we love
the neighborhood so much!

Yay!

So, you want
to buy the house.

We definitely need
to take some time
to think about it,

but we absolutely
love the space.
It's beautiful.

We blew them away! Yes!

We paid $15,000 for this house,

which started as a duplex.

We spent $130,000
on the renovation.

So our total investment
ended up being $145,000.

I'm thrilled
that Keaton and Deanna

decided to buy the house
after all

for the asking price
of $175,000.

That gives us a profit
of about $30,000.

That's the best part about it,
is we could get a home

that's been
almost completely rebuilt,

and the price is affordable.

And we know in a few years,

that that's gonna be
an investment for us.

So if there's
other people our age,

couples our age
looking to do the same thing,

that's what's gonna
change the neighborhoods.

This house offered us
a lot of opportunities

to bring our "A"-game
and be creative.

And we met every
single opportunity.

Every single one.

And the house
looks awesome.
