Zak and the crew investigate two mines in Jackson, California. The Argonaut was the site of a 1922 fire that killed 47 miners, and the Kennedy, which has had its share of deaths, seems to be ground zero for hauntings.

We're in Jackson, California.

We are heading to
an entire mining compound.

♪♪

We're gonna be investigating
two different mines.

These mines right here have been
marked in California history

not because of how much gold
was produced from them

but because of how much death
was produced by them.

One of these mines,
the Kennedy Mine,

is one of the deepest mines
in the mother lode.

♪♪

The Kennedy Mine
had a lot of deaths,

over 30 in its entire duration
of mining.

BILLY:
That's a lot.

The other mine,
the Argonaut Mine

was responsible
for the deadliest mining tragedy

in California history,

47 miners dying in a single day
in a fire in 1922.

That raging, uncontrollable fire

entombed 47 men
over 4,000 feet below ground.

♪♪

Blocked by the ferocious fire,

frantic rescuers
attempted to reach the miners

by tunneling in
from the Kennedy side.

They were too late.

Before we investigate the
tragedy-scarred Argonaut Mine,

we stop at the Kennedy Mine,

where a man suffered
a traumatic attack

by something unseen.

Did the rescuers' tunnels

expose the Kennedy Mine
to something evil generated by

the anguish of the deadly
Argonaut Fire?

for our interview

with the man who was attacked,

we notice he's having trouble
keeping it together.

I noticed before the interview,

here at the Kennedy Mine
that was rather emotional

It was all wrapped
into one.

ZAK: George and his wife
were investigating

one of the buildings
on the property

when he was attacked.

We were out here
doing an investigation

with this group
of people,

and as I'm coming down
the stairs,

I was actually
branded.

What do you mean
"branded"?

A scratch would
maybe cause blood.
Yeah.

This was a claw mark
coming down.

When you felt this mark
on the back of your neck,

was it the emotions
of just being marked

or was there
something more to it?

There was
something more to it.

I lost my mind.

I was actually
getting angry inside.
I was so frustrated,

and I had someone next to me
that I would never even harm,

26 years of marriage,
I would never.

But I looked at --

And I went through crying,
and I was angry.

to me before.

and to this day, I have flashes.

And I don't understand,

it's a struggle.

to the building

where George was attacked.

Really, my focus right now
is on this house.

what was the whole --

This house that we're going to,
what is the building's name?

The mine office.

It's three floors.

The bottom floor was
for processing the ore.
Okay.

They poured the gold bricks
in there.

They did that
in the house?

In that building.

So, armed guards there.

So, all the money that was
taken out of the ground...
It's right there.

...was passed through
that house up there.
Yeah.

What all these men
lost their lives to do,

to get these precious metals,
gold, silver, out of the ground,

and this is
where it went to.

This was the hub for all
the money, for all the greed,

so there's really
no telling

what could have happened
at this mining office.

While Aaron takes George to the
stairway where he was attacked,

I meet an investigator with
experience in this building.

I just want to ask you,
right off the bat,

with all the different
buildings on property,

where is the most
negative energy?

-This particular house, yes.
-This is gonna be it.

One of the times that I tried
to enter the building,

I was hit with what felt like
a wall of energy,

so strong enough

the guys begin to hear
unnerving sounds.

down there.

There's no one here.

-Dude, did you hear that?
-Yeah.

That sounded like --
I thought I was gonna walk

around the corner
and see Zak or someone.

I swear to God, I've heard a man
walking or talking

and then a woman twice.

ZAK:
Listen closely, and you can hear
an unexplained voice

responding to Aaron
by saying, "Hello."

I swear to god, I've heard

AARON: Let's just
go look real fast.

This was
a huge operation.

There was a lot of miners,
a lot of money.

There was millions
and millions.

Back in that day, you know,
the laws and justice

was just a lot more barbaric
than it is now, obviously.

And if you were to get
caught stealing,

I'm sure that the owner
served justice his own way.

Oh, I'm sure.

[ Oscillating static ]

What happened, George?

I just started feeling
like I was gonna collapse,

and I got weak.
I had to sit down quickly

'cause I just felt like I was
just gonna -- just fall over.

ZAK:
I meet another investigator
who also encountered

something hostile
in this building.

On the third floor
of the mining office,

another investigator
and I were up there.

We heard
an audible growl.
Really?

Yeah, we felt the need to get
out of there very, very fast.

I know there's mountain lions
in the area,

so was this coming from
inside or outside?

Inside. Definitely
inside the building.
It was?
Okay.

And that's not the first time
that growl has been heard.

ZAK:
As I head to check up on Aaron,
he's hit by an insistent thought

that stops him in his tracks.

AARON: Okay, here's
what went through my head.

It was, "Call Zak.

Get him up here 'cause
some stuff is going on."

Whoa.

I just feel like I need
to get up there.

I don't know why.

Hey.
BILLY:
Was that locked?

I don't know. I just feel like
I need to get up here.

Hold on a second.
What'd you just say?
You feel like what?

I feel like I just need
to get up here.

Aaron just said, just now,
"I feel like Zak

needs to come up here."

Then you banged
on the door.

BILLY:
Hey, Aaron.
AARON: Yeah?

Guess what
Zak just said.
What?

"I feel like I need
to come up there."

Oh, my God, dude!
Yeah.

ZAK:
Is something trying to draw me
into the mine office building,

where the owners
reaped huge profits

on the backs
of endangered miners,

by channeling Aaron's thoughts
to welcome me inside?

He's --
"Welcome"!

I step outside
to gather my thoughts

on this highly complex
investigation.

You never know when you're up
here in these old mining towns,

and this, this one
is a lot more unique

than ones that we've been to
in the past

for the simple fact that,
a stone's throw away,

the Argonaut Mine
had the most tragic day

in California history
when it comes to mines,

with 47 lives lost
in a single fire.

How'd that fire start?

When you inject this ground
with that much death,

with that much hell,
with that much fire,

something still seems
to be here guarding it,

and they're not guarding money.
They're guarding souls.

We're gonna scale a
hundred-year-old rotting tower.

It's day two, and we now
turn our attention

to the ill-fated Argonaut Mine.

♪♪

The Argonaut Mine in 1922
is where 47 men

lost their lives
in a single day.

♪♪

Vance?
-Yeah?

-How you doing?
-Good.

Is this rain
gonna get worse?

MUELLER:
Yes, a lot.

ZAK: Vance Mueller,
a former running back

for the Los Angeles Raiders,

plans to restore the Argonaut

and establish a memorial
on these grounds.

Now that tragedy struck
in 1922, correct?

In August, yeah.

Can you tell me
exactly what happened?

Basically, down below,
they had a fire.

These guys built a barricade
and barricaded themselves in.

Then a rescue plan
went into place,

and there were sort of
different arguments

on how it was
gonna be handled,

and unfortunately, all the
miners perished in the accident.

It's one
of the worst accidents

in the history
of the United States.

ZAK: The underground tunnels
are flooded

and can't be investigated,

but the tower still remains.

Right now, we are literally
touching the hoist tower.

This is where the miners
on that day in 1922

went into the Argonaut Mine

before they all,
47 of them, were killed.

Vance?
MUELLER: Yes.

Is this burnt wood?

From the fire?

So, to be able
to touch...
Wow.

...a part of this hoist tower
that was scarred on that day

makes this that much more
real and overwhelming.

So, I don't know
if you're a believer,

if you're a nonbeliever
or what,

but this is a real
serious question --

Have you ever heard
of any tales

or any reports of paranormal
occurrences in this area,

in this building, in the tower,
anything at all?

There was always reports
of people being in the tower

or voices being heard
inside the buildings here.
There are.

But no one has proof
it was kids, or owls, or...

And that's
why we're here.

on Dakota.

There is a metal staircase
in there that can take you

to the top of this tower,
which is 145-feet tall.

So, there's a huge storm
moving in right now.

There are no protective rails
up there,

and how old
is this tower?

Just a little over
100 years old.

I have to go up here.

I have to experience this.

So, we're gonna scale a
hundred-year-old rotting tower.

People don't realize.

that on this job,
we risk our lives.

So this came down in
the big storm last year.

This big thing, right here,
was across here,

and it helped hold
the cables coming across,

and it gave way

AARON:
This is dangerous.

You can hear
the winds outside.

The storm is getting stronger.
The rain is getting harder.

Hearing the noises that are
coming through this old tower,

it's scary.

That's crazy.

MUELLER:
What do you think, Zak?

You can see how vertical
that climb is.

Gonna be pretty windy
at 145 feet up there.

-God, dude.
-It's pouring.

That tingle you're feeling
right now, trying to decide,

"Should I or
shouldn't I,"

ignore it.

I want you
to be safe, for sure,

but I want you to feel
nervous at the same time.

ZAK: First, Vance tells me
that load-bearing sections

fall off during storms.

Now he wants me to be nervous.

Vance is now scaring me
more than the thought

of climbing this
100-year-old crumbling tower.

♪♪

MUELLER: I mean,
it's coming down now.

ZAK: The narrow, slippery steps
feel as though

they could give way
at any moment,

and my hand feels weak trying to
grip the soaking-wet handrail.

♪♪

I want to personally thank
this tree branch

for keeping me
from climbing any higher.

♪♪

Hoping we've stirred up
some spiritual activity,

we pull out the recorder
and begin a session.

Could you connect

I felt almost in fear of my life
being up on top of that ladder.

...and feel the entire tower
shift on its base,

sending us all into panic.

I'll tell you the real reason
why I wanted to do that.

It wasn't for just to have
this adventure to do,

but it was just
to be put in

that mind-set
of mental challenge...
Yeah.

...of whether or not
I wanted to go any further.

And you did an extreme one
because you're afraid
of heights, so...
Yeah.

and just hitting that one spot
where I felt real danger.

Oh, God, the wind!

Oh, God.

And I felt that,
if I went up any further

with the storm coming
and stuff like that,

real bad things could happen,
but I wanted to feel that.

I wanted to get put to that test
and feel that emotion

at a place where
so many men felt that emotion

that eventually led
to their deaths,

pure panic,
pure survival

and just the thoughts
of that...

Guys, it's cold.

It's damp, and this is
a massive investigation

covering a lot of land.

The focus of this investigation
are two mines,

the Kennedy Mine
and the Argonaut Mine.

The Argonaut Mine -- it's
a piece of California history

not because of all the gold
that came out of it

but because of all the deaths
inside of it,

47 deaths in one day
due to a fire.
Tragic.

With that said,
we're gonna have to separate

because it is so massive.

Over here
at the Kennedy Mine,

one building in particular
that houses something evil,

something negative
that is attacking people

but not just
attacking them.

It is
traumatizing them.

Look what happened with George
when we interviewed this man.
Oh, man.

He was literally
in tears.

[ Voice breaking ]
I was scared.

ZAK: Because this
massive investigation

covers so much acreage,

I'm going to have
our camera operator, Dakota,

assist Billy with investigating
the Argonaut Mine

while Jay, Aaron and myself
start our investigation

at the Kennedy mining office,

and as we arrive,

I begin setting up this exterior
shot of the building

when Aaron claims to see an
apparition through the window.

ZAK: What's going on?

Hold on. Hold on.
Grab the camera.

ZAK:
Where did you see him?

AARON: It's like this --
I was standing there.

Stand there and see
if you can see us.

Watch.
So if you were
standing here...

Right outside the window,

I swear I saw this thing,
like, kind of go like this,

and it just
walked this way.

So, we're gonna do
a quick burst session.

where we can fall.

There is so much
mining equipment

-Wow.
-[ Laughing ] Oh, my gosh.

DAKOTA:
What is that?
BILLY: This is, like,
a control room

for all the buckets and stuff
and, like, the --
[ Thud ]

[ Scrape ]
Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Oh, my gosh, dude.

Our cameras definitely picked
that up without a doubt.

-I heard it, but I wasn't sure.
-Oh, my gosh.

BILLY:
It completely sounded
like a scream.

Yeah, it sounded like
it was --

-Where did it come from?
-It sounded like over here.

ZAK: Billy and Dakota
both hear what sounds like

a blood-curdling scream
come up through the mine shafts.

Could this be one of the miners'
residual death cries?

Control room for all the buckets
and stuff and, like the...

[ Scrape ]
Whoa, whoa!

[ Scrape ]
Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Hello?

♪♪

I think what I'm gonna do
right now, guys,

is that I don't feel
anything,

but I did feel something
over here.

I felt the spirit that made that
noise to us on the recorder,

but I don't feel it
anymore down here.

So, what I'm gonna do
right now is use this

to find the spirit.

Once we start picking up some
unexplained milligauss readings,

then that is our spirit,

so we're gonna let this
find the treasure.

As I perform a sweep of
the first floor and staircase,

I receive no spikes
of electromagnetic energy,

but then something strange
catches my eye.

So, this is where
they say you live.

Getting a really strange
light.

Zooming into it now.

ZAK: We've discovered
a mysterious light source

at the Kennedy Mine
office building.

What the hell?

Okay.

Stay there.

I think that was
just a reflection.

As I walk towards
this unexplained light,

I quickly discover that
it's a shiny porcelain sink

reflecting my infrared light,
which makes this debunked.

We now decide to head upstairs
where the aggressive spirit

that's known to attack people
is said to reside.

Again, not feeling anything,
not sensing anything at all.

Feels very empty.

I guess
there's nothing here.

I guess maybe we should take
everything out of here,

including the gold,
the silver, everything.

So, this is where
they say you live.

[ Creaking ]

Billy is going
to try to communicate

with any of the 47 spirits
from the mine tragedy

by using a device
that will allow them

to directly answer questions

by manipulating
an environmental sensor

located within
the Paranormal Puck 2.

BILLY: I'm gonna set the
Paranormal Puck right here,

right in the center
of where men were stationed,

pulling these levers, trying
to help these men get out.

I don't think it would matter
where I put that

because I kind of feel like
they're around us right now.

DAKOTA:
Oh, I totally agree.

BILLY:
I'm just gonna address them,
miners of...

Miners of the Argonaut.

OVILUS: Seven.

-"Seven"!
-"Seven."

Maybe that's
seven miners.

DAKOTA:
I did just feel like
we're not alone,

like there was more
than one, too.
No.

it could possibly
be seven miners.

Seven miners.
Wow.

There's seven miners here
right now?

Dude, let me
ask a question. Hold on.

If it's true that seven of you
are here with us right now,

and you are trying
to communicate with us,

could you please
make a noise?

[ Thud ]

What was that?

Did you hear that?

-Oh, my God.

There was a shadow

I can see the skylight,

BILLY:

-Spirits, we --

[ Bang ]
BOTH: Whoa!

-Something just fell.

-I heard it.
-[ Sighs ]

[ Breathing heavily ]

Was that them trying
to make an indirect --

I don't know, but there's
all kinds of noises going on

in this room with us,
right now,

as we're asking these questions
and we're talking about them.

Maybe they're trying
to make indirect noises
to get our attention.

That's what I'm thinking.
We've heard something drop now.

So what's going on?
-I don't know.

ZAK: Right after Billy says
these spirits

are making indirect
noises to communicate,

the Paranormal Puck 2 delivers

an absolutely incredible
message from the spirits.

Do you have
any messages?

Indirect.

-[ Gasps ]
-Geez.

Man, I have full chills
on my neck.

This is crazy.
-It said "Indirect."

-"Indirect."
-"Indirect," which meant --

Which means they're not gonna
give us a direct answer, but --

They're trying to let us know
that they're here.

They're just letting us
know that they're here.
That's really cool.

ZAK: As we make our way
to the third floor,

I decide to lead out
with the Spirit Box

because if this spirit
tries to attack me,

maybe I'll receive a warning
from the other spirits.

[ Oscillating static ]

[ Static continues ]

-Oh, my God.
-You hear that?

AARON: Yeah, That was a man.
It sounded like --

ZAK:
We all hear a deep male voice
say, "Fight me."

Then it sounds like a different
male spirit says, crystal-clear,

"Get out of here."

-Oh, my God!
-Do you hear that?

AARON:
Yeah, that was a man.
It sounded like --

Whoa!

-Oh, my God!
-Do you hear that?

Yeah, that was a man.
It sounded like --

Whoa!

ZAK: Could this second spirit
be telling us to get out of here

because the evil spirit
wants to fight us?

All right.

[ Sighs ] Whoa.
BILLY: Yeah.

This is weird down here.
-We are underground.

We're under all that
equipment right now.
Yeah.

DAKOTA: There's
all these shafts.

BILLY:
Look at all this equipment
under here, the engine,

all the pistons and stuff
that run the giant wheel.

Oh, look under there.

Oh, bingo.
-What?

-You find it?
-Yeah.

That is
a vertical drop.

Holy crap.

We're gonna
leave you here.
No.

Ow, you're gonna break --
[ Groans ]

ZAK: Billy and Dakota
have found a dangerous pit

at the Argonaut Mine.

Holy crap.

DAKOTA:
Should we go?

I think you
better stay up here...
Okay.

...just to be
on the safe side

so that if anything
happens to me,

you can go get help.
Okay.

Does that make sense?
Yeah, yeah.

But we're gonna need
that ladder to get down

to this next section...

for me to jump.

seem to travel in tandem
around Billy

as he is making his way

anomalies that they capture,

further debunking
the possibility

my feet over a vertical shaft

that goes
directly to the mine

where the miners
lost their lives.

I have the Spirit Sweep
here with me,

and after some
amazing communication

with what we believe to be
some of the spirits upstairs,

I'm now going

of the Spirit Sweep

and possibly communicate.

because we want to explore
a nearby mine shaft.

We didn't get much evidence
at the mining house,

but we can't just conclude
that it isn't haunted.

I just don't think we were there

but we picked up
on some residual energy.

I believe those voices
were residual,

so we left a Spirit Box there
running and a camera on that

just to see
if any more voices

come through with
us not there.

So, I say it's extremely
foggy outside.

I'm a little worried
for Billy and Dakota,

who are at the other mine,
pretty far away.

So, we're going to go down
to one of the mine shafts here

at the Kennedy
and explore that.

-Careful driving out.

I thought I just saw
somebody, right there,

by that wooden thing.

see a dark figure

move behind this wooden canopy

as our headlights
sweep in that direction,

but because this camera
is fully zoomed out,

you can't see it on video.

Aaron immediately rushes back
to the house

to see if he can determine
whether or not

this is the same figure
that he saw

at the very start
of our investigation.

ZAK: It's really foggy,
but I know what I saw.

After checking
around the canopy,

I don't see any signs
of animals or trespassers,

so if this is indeed
the same apparition

Aaron saw earlier, and it's now
returning to the house,

I feel as though
someone in particular

needs to stay here alone.

the old mining office,

we prepare to enter
an extremely narrow mine shaft

that has no support beams.

Right now, we're gonna
go into this mine.

It's the Massa Mine,

and the Massa Mine
was dug in the 1850s,

and it hits into the eastern
vein of the mother lode.

glowing in the UV?
