Gargoyles (1994–1996): Season 2, Episode 43 - Future Tense - full transcript

Goliath attempts to use the phoenix gate to travel through time to get to Manhattan. He arrives to find Demona has joined the clan, and is married to Brooklyn. Xanatos has the gargoyles on the run, but finds unexpected allies in the Xanatos's son. Goliath tries to find out where/when everything went wrong, and who was ultimately responsible.

GOLIATH: One thousand
years ago,

superstition
and the sword ruled.

It was a time of darkness.

It was a world of fear.

It was the age of Gargoyles.

Stone by day,

warriors by night.

(GUTTURAL SCREAM)

We were betrayed by the humans
we had sworn to protect,

frozen in stone
by a magic spell

for a thousand years.

Now, here in Manhattan...

the spell is broken

and we live again!

(GROWLING)

GOLIATH: We are Defenders
of the Night.

We are Gargoyles!

GOLIATH:
Previously onGargoyles...

ELISA: If you’re
from Goliath’s time,
how did you get here?

GUARDIAN: Time passes
differently on Avalon.

For every hour
spent there,

one day goes by
in the real world.

ELISA: Every time we sail
into that mist, I keep hoping

I’ll see the Brooklyn Bridge
or Lady Liberty.

At least you have Avalon
to come home to.

But it’s not my home.

It’s not our home.

Now that matters
are settled here,

we’ve a quest to return to.

GOLIATH: Oberon is gathering
his magical children
home to Avalon.

I wish Avalon would finally
send us home as well.

You and me both.

GOLIATH: I miss
the Trio and Hudson.

I’d give much to see
Manhattan’s spires again.

(LIGHTNING CRACKLING)

(GROANING)

Goliath!

I...

I’m fine. I... Look!

ELISA: (GASPS)
The Statue of Liberty!

-At last we’re home!
-(BARKING)

(PANTING)

(BOTH GASPING)

No...

-(THUNDER RUMBLES)
-ELISA: What...

What’s happened?

This is the world
you wanted me to see?

It wasn’t like this.

-This is impossible.
-(BEEPING)

MAN (OVER PA): Attention.
By entering these waters

you are
violating Manhattan
national sovereignty.

Prepare for apprehension.

(GASPING)

Angela! Elisa!

(GASPING) Goliath! Help!

(GRUNTS) Hold on, Elisa!

(GROANS)

(GRUNTS)

Elisa!

(SCREAMING) No!

(GROANS)

(GASPING)

(COUGHING)

MATT: Ooh!
Pull up slow, Claw.

You don’t want to ram him.

(GRUNTS)

Thank you, strangers.

Strangers? Is that any way
to greet old friends?

Goliath, it’s me...
Matt Bluestone!

Bluestone?

What has happened to you?

Well, I got older.

What happened to you?

You look exactly the same
after 40 years.

Forty years?
It cannot be.

I know time passes
more slowly on Avalon, but...

This mystery
will have to wait.

Elisa and Angela
have been captured
by Xanatos’ robots.

That’s bad.
Claw, get us back to base.

(SQUEAKING)

GOLIATH:
They are not afraid of us.

MATT: They’ve got
better things to be afraid of.

(GASPING)

(FOOTSTEPS MARCHING)

(GASPING)

(GASPING)

(GLASS SHATTERING)

(BABY CRYING)

Goliath, no!

You can’t fight them all!
Not here. Not now.

(ALARM BLARING)

Rejoice, my people.

The Age of Xanatopia
is at hand.

All of your
suffering and hardship
will soon come to an end.

And the rest of the world
will enjoy

the fruits of
my benevolent leadership.

Soon my people, very soon.

Xanatos must be stopped!

We must return to
the clock tower.
Get the others!

Goliath,
that is the clock tower.

Come on, it’s not safe
out in the open.

BLACKSTONE: The first hero
of the Resistance.

He died fighting
Xanatos’ breakaway

from the U.S.

Hudson... Dead.

(WHIMPERING)

None of us have seen
Xanatos in person since.

GOLIATH:
I saw his broadcast image.

He does not look
40 years older.

The rumor is he’s realized
his dream of immortality.

Brooklyn!

Welcome back, Goliath.

I’ve been waiting
a long time for this.

(GOLIATH GROANS)

(SNARLS)

You got a lot of nerve
showing your face around here!

What was that all about?

He abandoned us

Without you, we were no match
for Xanatos.

I didn’t know.

We thought
our odyssey was fated.

We wanted to come home.

Oh, hey...

You know, that makes
everything much better.

Don’t yell at him, Brooklyn.
He’s back now.

That’s all that matters.

Broadway...

I knew you’d come back.

Others doubted,
but I never lost faith.

What...

What happened to him?

Broadway, Talon,
Maggie, and Coldstone

battled Sevarius
and the Ultra-Pack
to save the last free humans

from being
turned into Mutates.

Broadway was the lucky one.

If there were anything
I could do to change this...

Wait a minute.
The Phoenix Gate.

Tell me you have it.

We’ve got to use it
to go back in time

and stop all this
from ever happening.

Impossible.

Time is like a river,

correcting its course
against any change.

History cannot be altered.

Look around you, Goliath.

What have we got
to lose by trying?

The solutions lie
not in the past,

but in the present.

We must free Elisa and Angela

and topple Xanatos
from his throne.

DEMONA:
That may not be so easy.

GOLIATH: Demona!

(GRUNTS)

Are you mad?
She’s our enemy!

Not anymore.

Are you all right, my love?

Yes, now that
I’m back in your arms.

(GROWLING)

You two, together?

But... I thought Demona
had chosen Thailog.

Uh, yeah, but...

Thailog was killed
in the Clone Wars.

(WHIRRING)

Lexington!
What has happened to you?

No time for explanations.

Fox has
infiltrated Xanatos’ lair.

We’re receiving
the transmission now.

We’d better get
to the war room.

Glad to have
you back, Goliath.

Better late than never.

Homing in on Fox’s signal.

Fox is helping us?

Fox is our secret weapon.

Xanatos has no idea

how much
his son loathes him.

His son?

On screen now.

(GRUNTING)

GOLIATH: Where in
the world are they?

(EXPLOSION)

LEXINGTON: Somewhere inside
the Eyrie Pyramid.

I’m trying to
pinpoint the signal.

I’m disappointed, Alexander.

Did you really believe

I didn’t know you had joined
Brooklyn’s rebels?

(EXPLOSION)

ALEXANDER: Ah!

(GROANING) Oh...

(ALEXANDER GRUNTS)

Well, Father,
you are well informed.

Did you also know
I’m broadcasting

this little family chat

directly to
rebel headquarters?

Of course. I’m piggy-backing
on your signal.

I should have the location
of their secret base

in under 20 minutes.

No!

Nice try, my boy.

But you can’t defeat me.
Your rebels are doomed.

And once they’re gone,

there will be no one left
to stop me. In fact,

before this night is over,

I’ll literally be
king of the world.

And since I’m immortal,

-I have no need of an heir.
-(SCREAMS)

I knew Xanatos was evil.

But to destroy his own son...

He didn’t die in vain.
I got a fix on the signal.

Believe it or not,
it was coming

from the Great Hall
in the old castle.

Hmm. Xanatos is onto us.

Our only course of action
is a preemptive strike.

Attack the pyramid?

Unless someone has
a more timely solution.

Elisa and Angela
may be there as well.

They must be rescued.

We’ll use
a two-pronged attack.

Matt’s ground forces will plant
charges on the lower levels.

That should keep
Xanatos’ grunts busy
while those of us with wings

fly into the nerve center,
inside Castle Wyvern.

One way or another,
it ends tonight.

Now let’s get out of here
before Xanatos nukes the place.

LEXINGTON: OK, Broadway,

we’re coming in
for a landing.

I’ve got it covered, Lex.

Your sonar collar’s
working just fine.

Once we’re inside,

you must rescue Angela
and escape with her.

Escape? To where?

As far away as you can.

You must protect
our daughter.

Give her the Phoenix Gate
so she may hide in the past.

Hiding is never a solution.

(LOUD EXPLOSION)

That’s our cue.

We’ve only got one shot
to stop Xanatos.

Let’s do it.

LEXINGTON:
Telemetry coming in.

(MACHINE WHIRRING)

Claw, Matt and Bronx
are gone.

Thailog Shock Troops!
Broadway, hit ’em!

Way ahead of you, Brook.

(WHINING)

(GROANING)

(GRUNTING)

(GRUNTING)

(GRUNTING)

(SCREAMING)

(SHRIEKS)

(ROARS)

(BROADWAY GROANS)

Broadway!

Hold on, Broadway.

If you can last until sunrise,
you’ll be healed.

(WHISPERING) Oh...

Yes...

The sun.
Can you see it, Goliath?

It’s beautiful.

Good-bye, my friend.

(GROWLING)

(SHOUTING) Xanatos!

Show yourself!

(ALL GROANING)

(POWERING DOWN)

ELISA: Goliath!

You came at last.

What is this place?

XANATOS:
It’s not a place, Goliath.

It’s me.

The real me.
Since Hudson and I quarreled.

(SCREAMING)

BROOKLYN:
Your body was destroyed.

XANATOS: Sad but true.

However, my brain patterns
and personality

were successfully downloaded
into my computer network,

granting me the immortality
I’ve always desired.

You’re not immortal.

You’re not even Xanatos.

The real Xanatos
at his worst

would not have done
what you’ve done.

You’re just
an unfeeling machine!

Well, this machine
is about to download

onto every computer
on the World Wide Net.

Bringing the planet exactly
the kind of order it needs.

My kind.

The world needs
your kind of order

like it needs another ice age.

Well, we can’t have that.

How about some sun
to melt through that ice.

(SCREAMS)

DEMONA: Ah!

Well, Demona,
I see Puck’s spell
of transformation

even works in Cyberspace.

You didn’t turn to stone.

Which means...

You get to suffer.

DEMONA: No!

(CRYING)
My daughter! My love!

(GROANS)

(CRACKLING)

Goliath, listen!

This world is not real.

It’s controlled
by the mind.

If your will is greater,

you can defeat him.

(SCREAMS)

Well, that’s that.

No, it is not.

It ends now, machine.

Goliath! No!

(WHIRRING)

Alas, poor Goliath.
I knew him well.

You will not win.

What are you going to do?
Bite my kneecaps off?

Whatever you’re up to,
it won’t work.

XANATOS: Ah!

Demona, Brooklyn,

Angela...

LEXINGTON:
Gone. Bye-bye.

-Sorry about that.
-(ELISA GASPS)

ELISA: Lexington?

I had to keep you occupied

while I finished downloading
the Xanatos program.

In less than a minute,

all the world
will belong to me.

It was you all along?

Yep. Xanatos really did die
in the fight with Hudson.

I just kept
his memory alive,

so I could run
the show unmolested.

You betrayed your own clan!

You betrayed us.

You disappeared
when we needed you the most.

You’ve lost, Goliath!

Even if you
destroy this terminal,

there are a thousand others
all over the city!

Traitor!

(ROARING)

(CRACKLING)

(GROANS)

(GRUNTS)

We’ve lost, Goliath.

It was all for nothing.

You heard Lex.
The countdown wasn’t stopped.

The Xanatos program
is spreading all over the globe.

There’s only
one chance left.

The Phoenix Gate.

It’s too late. Even if we could
change the past.

I’m too weak to use it.

Then let me try.
There’s nothing to lose.

Give it to me, Goliath.

Here...

Take it.

-Give it to me.
-Too weak.

No, you’re not.
Put it in my hand.

If you want it, take it.

Give it to me! Now!

No.

You’re not Elisa.

Who are you?

No! No! Not now!

I was so close!
So close!

Puck!
This is your doing?!

Why?

(SIGHS)

Big Daddy Oberon’s
already begun The Gathering.

Time for all us
wayward children

to toddle back
to oh-so-boring Avalon.

And what has
that to do with me?

You have to ask?

Even Oberon’s not above
a little bribery.

If I hand him
the Phoenix Gate,

he might just let me hang out

with you mortals
a while longer.

So you needed
to get it from me.

Exact-a-mundo.

Problem is, the rules say
I can’t take it from you.

I needed you
to fork it over.

And that’s why you created
that horrible dream?

Ooh! Was it a dream?
Or a prophecy?

I must know.

Mm-hmm. Like I’d tell you.

Wake up!

Wake up! Wake up, Goliath!

What happened to me?

That’s what
we were wondering.

A few seconds ago, you were
talking about getting home,

and then you passed out
and fell off the skiff.

No...

We found Manhattan.
But it was wrong, all wrong.

Manhattan? I don’t get it.

I did not either.
Until it was nearly too late.

Puck may try
his deception again.

I can’t chance him succeeding.

Goliath?
What’s this all about?

(GOLIATH CHANTING SPELL)

(IN ENGLISH)
Why did you do that?

Without a mind
to direct the Gate,

it will be
forever lost in time.

Yes, and beyond the reach
of all who desire it.

Uh, you’re gonna
explain all this, right?

I had a nightmare, Elisa.

Now, we must get home

and make sure
it does not come true.

(THEME MUSIC PLAYING)
