Gargoyles (1994–1996): Season 2, Episode 36 - Eye of the Storm - full transcript

The travelers end up in the arctic circle where a man tries to trade them blankets, other survival items for the Eye of Odin. They soon realize it really is Odin, Goliath uses the Eye to fight Odin. The power soon goes to Goliath's head.

GOLIATH:
One thousand years ago,

superstition
and the sword ruled.

It was a time of darkness.

It was a world of fear.

It was the age of gargoyles.

Stone by day,

warriors by night.

(GUTTURAL SCREAM)

We were betrayed by the humans
we had sworn to protect,

frozen in stone
by a magic spell

for a thousand years.

Now, here in Manhattan...

the spell is broken

and we live again!

(DEEP GROWL)

We are Defenders of the Night.

We are gargoyles!

NARRATOR:
Previously onGargoyles...

Arthur Pendragon,

King of all Britain,
you are needed.

(GASPS)

Oh, you have awakened me early.

I have neither Excalibur,
nor my knights,

nor my old friend, Merlin.

I, too, will explore
this new world,

but on my own, and thus a bit
less conspicuous.

If you end up on an island
named Manhattan,

look up my clan.

BANQUO: I still
don’t see why we gotta
go out in this storm.

Gives me the goosebumps.

You’re feeling the power
of the Harmonic Convergence.

Magical forces are
gathering in the city

to open a door
through time and space.

Oh, it’s weird.

I keep feeling like
something is coming.

Something is coming.

Something powerful,
and I will have it come to me.

The weatherman
didn’t say anything
about a storm tonight.

This is no ordinary storm.
I know this wind.

Something is coming.

-(LIGHTNING STRIKES)
-(ALL GASP)

(BELL TOLLING)

City of Wonders!

(WHOOSHING)

You’re not Excalibur,
but you’ll do. I hope.

Oh, Merlin, where are you
when I need you?

A church locked?

How can I stand vigil
if I cannot get in?

(GRUNTS)

What magic is this?

I sense something.

The Stone of Destiny.

I’d hoped Excalibur
had returned to you.

Who seeks the sword Excalibur?

(EXCLAIMS IN SURPRISE)

I don’t hold with
people breaking into my abbey!

(SIGHS) A gargoyle.

For a moment
I thought I was in danger.

And what makes you
think you’re not?

London is my protectorate.

This is London?

Then you’re not
of Goliath’s clan?

Goliath! Well, I...
I’m a friend of his.

I’m called Griff. Who are you?

I am Arthur Pendragon,
King of Britain.

Uh-huh. And I’m the Queen Mum.

You have returned
to the waking world

unbidden, Arthur Pendragon.

If you seek the sword,

you must prove
you are still worthy.

I will prove my worthiness,

though I have to pull Excalibur
from a hundred stones.

I will take you to the sword
if you but say where it is.

I hate riddles.

I know a riddle
about Excalibur.

I learned it as a hatchling.

(CLEARS THROAT)

Isle of Towers,
glass and stone,

the Lady waits for him alone.

Ebon glass in emerald frame,
pure white lily speak her name.

Blood red bane,
in Dragon stone,

Excalibur waits for him alone.

"Isle of Towers,
glass and stone"?

You have passed
the first test, Pendragon.

Know that there will be others.

But it is my sword!

It belongs to the true King.
Are you still he?

(EXCLAIMS IN SURPRISE)

Wait!

(EXCLAIMING IN ALARM)

It approaches. It approaches!

Hey! Over there!

What is it?

Nothing that belongs here.

(CHANTING SPELL)

He ain’t
paying us enough for this!

(GRUNTING)

(GRUNTING)

A man and a gargoyle?

This is the prize?

-Macbeth!
-Have we met?

(GRUNTING)

To me! We’ll finish this later!

(ENGINE STARTING)

Should we go after him?
Macbeth tends to be bad news.

I’d like some answers first.

Thank you, my friends.
If I may so call you.

Who are you?

Name’s Griff, of London.

And I guess
this really is King Arthur.

We’re looking for Excalibur.
The sword.

You are King Arthur?

I am.
Are you of Goliath’s clan?

He told me to seek you out
if I came to Manhattan.

You’ve seen Goliath?
Is he all right?

Are Bronx and Elisa with him?

-When are they coming back?
-Where are they?

I met up with
Goliath in London.

But Elisa’s mother
saw them in Nigeria!

And Halcyon Renard
saw them in Prague.

I met them on Avalon

when Elisa awakened me
from my enchanted sleep.

Only Avalon knows
when they will return.

But if this is Manhattan,

then the sword
has left Britain.

(SIGHS) I don’t understand.

The travelers did
not come through

the portal by chance.

They are here for a reason
and a powerful one.

(CHANTING SPELL)

Tiny spirit of fire and light,
find the ones I seek tonight!

The will-o-the-wisp
is now my eyes and ears.

It will find this pair

and whatever power
they are seeking will be mine!

So this rookery poem
is your only clue to the sword?

Well,
this is an "Isle of Towers."

But "Ebon glass
in emerald frame"?

I can’t say I know
what that means.

I think I do! Look!

"Pure white Lily
speak her name."

Lady of The Lake!
It is Arthur Pendragon.

Jalapena!

She’s so beautiful!

And she was right
in our own lake!

Yes, but why?
Why here and not in Britain?

I had not expected to see you

for some time,
Arthur Pendragon.

What would you have of me?

I need my sword, Lady.

I am not whole
without Excalibur.

Excalibur serves the king
who can claim it, Pendragon.

Then I claim it.
I am the King of Britain.

This is not Britain,
but a far larger stage.

Still, the world
does need a leader.

And that leader
needs this sword.

But you must
prove your worth.

-Arthur, look out!
-No!

-What’s going on?
-Be careful!

(GRUNTS)

(GROWLS)

(GROANING)

(ALL GROANING)

Use the lightning weapon!

Fire at the base!

(SCREAMS)

-Arthur, are you all right?
-What happened to you?

Thank you, my friends.

Well done, Pendragon.
You are still a leader born.

In the heart of these gardens,
across the river,

lies the sword in the stone,

to be claimed by
the timeless king
who can find it.

To be claimed by me!

That remains to be seen.

Wait, what did she mean by

the "gardens
across the river"?

That looked like a maze.

There, there are
no mazes on Manhattan.

-Brooklyn!
-What?

No, no, she...
She means Brooklyn!

The hedge-maze in the Brooklyn
Botanical Gardens.

I saw it in a guidebook.

He’s right.

There is a stone dragon
at the heart of that maze.

Hey, boss, you were a king.

And you’ve been
alive a long time.

"The timeless king," yes.

Why should it be Arthur again?

Perhaps it is my destiny
to wield the sword Excalibur!

Intercept them so that
I may reach the dragon first.

Wait a minute!

They really wiped
the floor with us last time.

We weren’t ready for them.

This time,
they won’t stand a chance.

LEXINGTON: Get down!

Get to the sword!
We’ll handle them!

I may be "timeless,"

but I’ll be ancient
before we get through this!

No place to get
any height for gliding,

so might I suggest
the direct approach?

No, you don’t!

Oh, yes, I do!

(GROANS)

You wanna play rough?
Come play with me!

I thought you’d never ask!

(GROANS)

Oh!

Oh.

(FLEANCE EXCLAIMS IN SURPRISE)

No free rides, batboy!

(BOTH GROAN)

You can come out now,
old timer.

There’s no way
you can outrun me.

And besides,
you aren’t even armed.

(GROANS)

Wrong again.

(EXCLAIMS IN SURPRISE)

No!

(STRAINING)

(CHUCKLING) Like shooting
fish in a barrel.

Let’s finish ’em off.

Yeah.

Excalibur!

No! Excalibur is mine!

No.

Ha! Your time is past,
Arthur Pendragon!

Macbeth, son of Findlaech,
is the one true king.

No! This is wrong!

Ahh!

(YELLING AGGRESSIVELY)

(BOTH STRAINING)

You will kneel to me!

Never!

I freed the sword
from the stone.

An honest man would recognize
his true king and yield.

Ah, you are right.
It is a hard thing, but I yield.

Arthur, no! Fight for it!

You are the once
and future king!

(ALL GROANING)

The dragon!

(ROARS)

(WAR CRY)

In for a penny, in for a pound!

(ROARS)

(GRUNTING)

OK, when I move the tree,
fry ’em!

Just do it.

(STRAINING)

(GRUNTING)

Excalibur!

No! It’s mine!

You can have it.
It’s not Excalibur.

-What?
-Arthur, behind you!

(STRAINING)

Oh, no, you don’t!

Get off me! Get off me!

(ALL GRUNTING)

Hudson, now!

(STRAINING)

Is everyone all right?

Yeah, we’re peachy.

(DRAGON SCREECHING)

Jalapena.

BROOKLYN:
We’ve gotta help them!

But there’s nothing to climb

to get enough
height to follow.

This way, guys!

Take the stairs!

Good work, Lex!

Now, you stay put.

No problem.

(ALL GROAN)

Well, that just about tears it.

(BOTH STRAINING)

You fool!

If you hadn’t broken the sword,
I could have slain this beast!

It was not the one.

It must be!
I pulled it from the stone!

"Blood red bane
in Dragon stone."

That’s it!
The sword is in the stone!

Griff! I need you!

Right with you, Your Majesty.

Help me get free.
I know what to do.

That’s the stuff!

Get clear!

Arthur!

You are the one.

Yes.
Though you, too, are a king,

you know Excalibur is mine.

No king can lead
without his knights.

You have fought a good fight.
I would have you with me.

I have been a king too long
to serve any man,

but if you ever need me
to stand by your side,

I will come.

HUDSON: What will you do now?

I will stay through the day,

but tomorrow night,
I must begin another quest

to find my friend
and teacher, Merlin.

And somehow, I must get Griff
back to London.

The truth is,
I’d rather stay with you.

Only a knighted champion
can travel with me now.

Yes, well.
I understand, of course.

And it’s been an adventure,

a story for
the hatchlings someday.

(DRAWS SWORD)

I could not ask
for a better champion

at my side.

By my hand and by this sword,

I name thee knight,

Sir Griff.

(THEME MUSIC PLAYING)
