Gargoyles (1994–1996): Season 2, Episode 29 - Sanctuary - full transcript

In Paris, Elise spots MacBeth, he's about to be married. Elise recognizes his bride-to-be, and realizes the groom has to learn about his future wife's secret before it's too late.

GOLIATH:
One thousand years ago,

superstition
and the sword ruled.

It was a time of darkness.

It was a world of fear.

It was the age of gargoyles.

Stone by day,

warriors by night.

(GUTTURAL SCREAM)

We were betrayed by the humans
we had sworn to protect,

frozen in stone
by a magic spell

for a thousand years.

Now, here in Manhattan,

the spell is broken

and we live again!

(DEEP GROWL)

We are Defenders of the Night.

We are gargoyles!

GOLIATH:
Previously onGargoyles...

How long has it been?

XANATOS: A thousand years
have gone by

since
the spell was cast.

You are the last of your kind.

GOLIATH: I have
my own destiny to face.

I realize now
that the hand of fate

has guided us to every place
we’ve gone on our journey.

I must see it
through to the end.

Souvenirs?

I’m personally going to ensure

that the Phoenix Gate
and the Eye of Odin

are never used again.

(CHURCH BELLS RINGING)

(LOUD CRASH)

(GLASS SHATTERS)

You can run,
but you can’t hide!

(SHATTERING CONTINUES)

There goes the neighborhood.

It’s not our problem.

(PANTS)

Oh, those thugs almost got me!

A menace, they are.

Yes.

What kind of store is this?

Magic and the like.

The owners are a bit eccentric,

like to dress up
in robes and masks.

Those are incredible masks.

Aren’t you going to do something
about those ruffians?

You want help,
call the police yourself.

What goes on outside this shop
is none of our business.

ELISA: London!

I’ve always wanted to visit.

Remember, we have been sent
here for a reason,

even if we don’t
yet know what it is.

ANGELA: I think I see
our first clue.

(SNIFFS)

ANGELA: That one
looks like you, Goliath.

(GROWLS) Very curious.

"In commemoration
of their courage
at the Battle of Britain..."

CABBIE: That was
The Blitz, miss.

1940, it was.

I remember the air raids
like they were yesterday.

Did gargoyles fight in the war?

Oh, they tell stories
about gremlins and the like.

You fancy this stuff?

Let’s just say
the legends intrigue me.

There’s a shop in Soho
might interest you.

The owners know all about
magic creatures.

Even dress up like them.

Can you take me to the shop?

No need to shout, love. Hop in.

Come. We will follow Elisa.

(CAR DOOR SHUTS)

(ENGINE STARTS)

CABBIE: Take care, love.

Thanks. Sorry about
the American money.

Goodnight.

Well, well, well...

What’s a nice girl
like you doing

in a place like this, eh?

Why don’t you boys
run along home?

Aw...

You know, I think
she’s disrespecting us.

Someone ought to
teach her a lesson.

(SNARLS)

(GRUNTS)

(THUGS GASPS AND EXCLAIMING)

(GROANING AND GRUNTING)

Just try me, monster.

(YELLS OUT)

(GAGGING)

Surely we were sent here

for something more
important than this.

(GAGGING)

Looks like it’s down
to you and me, pal.

(BRONX SNARLING)

(THUGS SCREAMING IN FEAR)

I was just starting
to miss you guys.

UNA: I don’t believe it!

You’ve come back!

Gargoyles. Real gargoyles.

We thought you died with Griff.

Is he here? Is he with you?

Griff?

You survived and he didn’t,
is that it?

The only reason we forgave you

was because we thought
you died with him.

I fear you have mistaken me
for another, my friend.

The mistake is yours, Goliath,

for believing
you can return here

without paying
the consequences.

I do not know what
you are talking about.

I have never been here.

And I do not know you.

I am Leo.
This is Una.

And Griff was the hero
you led to his demise.

Does that refresh
your recollection?

Not in the slightest.

(CLEARS THROAT) Shouldn’t
we sort this all out inside?

Follow me. Now.

(ENTRANCE BELL TINGLING)

Now, when do you think
you met Goliath?

1940.

During the Battle of Britain.

And I don’t think. I know.

That statue
by the river was from
the Battle of Britain.

Yes.

We believed you both
died as heroes.

Now we see it was only Griff.

Griff, who you swore to protect.

How could this be possible?

In 1940, I was frozen
in stone hibernation.

Liar! You’re lying now
just as you did then!

(DEEP ROAR)

You gotta stop this.

I agree.

(BOTH SNARLING AND GRUNTING)

Dormite hostes

mei ubi statis...

(ALL GROANING)

Good thinking.

I know my merchandise.

Unpleasant dreams, Goliath.

(GOLIATH MOANING)

Well, well,

look who’s back.

What...

Where are the others?

What have you done with them?

You can’t save them.
You can’t even find them.

Now, you are powerless,
just as we were.

You will live with the torment

that we have lived with
for half a century.

The torment of not knowing.

Tell me what you’ve done
with my friends, or I’ll...

You’ll what?

Do to us what you did to Griff?

(GUTTURAL SCREAM)

I don’t know any Griff!

GOLIATH: I swore never
to use the Phoenix Gate,

but I must find out
what happened in 1940.

Deslagrate

muri tempi et intervalia.

(BLADES WHIRRING)

(GASPS)

(GRUNTS)

Clive, did you see that?

CLIVE (ON RADIO):
See what, Douglas?

Ah, nothing.

The night sky playing tricks.

All right then, chaps.
Back to base.

You know, old boy,
that could’ve been a bit nasty.

You saved my life.

It was supposed
to work the other way.

Think nothing of it.

I always hoped there
were other gargoyles about.

You look like
Scottish stock to me.

Come to help with the war,
have you?

You could say that.

Good show!

-They call me Griff.
-I am Goliath.

Goliath, I’ve got some friends
you simply must meet.

Hello! I’m back.

Griff! You’re safe.

We were so worried.

Yeah. This was a bad one.

They’re all bad.

They won’t stop being bad
until the Nazis are beaten.

Now then, Leo, Una,

look who I found.

This is Goliath.

He’s come from
far away to help.

Pleased to meet you.

Any friend of Griff’s
is a friend of ours.

This shop has been in our clan
for generations.

Though with the Blitz,

who knows how much longer
it’ll be left standing.

Thank you.

I’m afraid
we can’t offer you sugar.

The war, you know.

There is a great deal
of hardship, then?

Oh, yes.
It’s been terrible for us.

For us?

We’re not important.

Unless the Nazis are stopped
here and now,

the future of the entire world
is in jeopardy.

Yes, yes,

but we belong down here,

protecting our home.

If the fight
comes to us, so be it.

Leo’s right.

The Nazis are a human problem.

What do you think, Goliath?

I do not presume to advise,

but in my experience,

human problems become
gargoyle problems.

Finally! Someone talking sense.

(AIR RAID SIRENS BLARING)

The planes are back.

So, who’s coming with me?

I will go.

That’s the stuff!

Griff, don’t go.
Please.

I have a terrible
feeling about tonight.

I’d only get on your nerves
if I stuck around too much.

You don’t think less of us?

Rubbish.

You’re minding the store.

Please look after him.

He’s very dear to me.

I mean, to us.

You have my oath.

I will not let anything
happen to him this time.

"This time"?

(AIR RAID SIRENS
CONTINUE BLARING)

This is Bader.
I’ve got a 109 on my tail!

Was ist...

(GROWLS)

(SCREAMING)

They’re real.

And they’re on our side.

(STRAINING) Come on...

(GRUNTING)

Open up!

Need a lift?

(GROANS)

Enjoy the nap, chum.

You earned it.

I must not leave Griff alone.

(GROANS)

(PANTING)

Goliath!

There’s a taste
of your own medicine.

(GROANS IS PAIN)
I’m all right.

All the same,
let’s get you home.

(CHUCKLES) How’d you
like the way I got
that last one, eh?

Pow! Right in the backside.

We showed ’em, we did.

’Ere, what’s this now?

It must be another
of those blasted Nazis!

It’s coming from our own side!

Let’s get down to the ground!

Surprise.

That was a bit of a scare.

Griff!

I’m beginning to wonder
if this night is
ever fated to end.

Perhaps fate can somehow be...

(SHOUTS)

Cheated!

Well, my friend, we’re even
on the lifesaving now.

You cannot return to your home.

Fate is conspiring against you.

What do you mean?
The store’s not far from here.

I see now that history
is impossible to change.

The fact is,

you did not
return home in 1940.

Say...

where are you
really from anyway?

Not where...

When.

Deslagrate muri
tempi et intervalia!

(GASPS)

What have you done
with Goliath?

Your friend has shown
his true character.

He has abandoned you,

as he once abandoned Griff.

Goliath would never leave us.

Believe what you wish.

He used sorcery to disappear
in a ball of flame.

The Phoenix Gate!

Goliath must have
gone back in time

to save your friend.

Nothing can change
what happened to Griff.

Goliath talked him
into fighting the Nazis.

We had all but convinced him
to stay safe with us.

But...

that’s the real problem,
isn’t it?

UNA: What...

What are you doing?

We should have gone with them.

I think all these years

we’ve been blaming
the wrong gargoyle

for the loss of Griff.

We were protecting our home!

And maybe that was
the right thing to do,

but it is our guilt
that haunts us.

Not Goliath’s.

(SOBS) Oh, Griff...

Why did you have
to be so brave?

We did come home!

(POLICE SIRENS BLARING)

(HORN BLARING)

Let’s not start that again.

Is this a...

Different time?

Yes.

The 1990s.

Let’s just hope
it’s not too late
to save my friends.

You have no reason
to blame yourselves.

Horrible things
happen in wartime.

(ENTRANCE BELL TINGLING)

(BRONX BARKING)

Mmm... Easy, Bronx.

Goliath, you’re injured!

Nothing that a day
of stone hibernation can’t cure.

I’m just happy to see
that you are safe.

Goliath, we owe you...

But... It can’t...

Una? Leo?

Let me look at you.

You’re just the same.

You’ve grown
quite distinguished, actually.

Oh, Griff!

It’s been so long.

Uh,

how long exactly?

What does it matter?
Tonight is a new beginning.

For all of us.

You can explain this
to us later.

So...

Leo and Una’s memories
of me were accurate,

but I couldn’t
recognize them because

I first had to go back
in time to meet them.

ANGELA:
Right...

OK, just explain it
one more time.

And take it slow.

Why don’t you go back
where you came from?

Yeah. Keep England pure!

Huh?

Is that any way to
treat your neighbor?

(SNARLING)

Ow!

(IMPACT GRUNT)

And don’t come back!

Or we’ll make it our business!

The more things change,
the more they stay the same.

(THEME MUSIC PLAYING)
