Freakshow (2013–…): Season 2, Episode 15 - Freakshow Magic - full transcript

Todd announces that he and some members of the Freakshow have been invited to The Magic Castle, a famed club for magicians in Los Angeles. The tour will be conducted by Max Maven, an acclaimed magician and mentalist who Morgue considers to be one of the best in the business. Todd, Phoenix, Creature and Morgue arrive at The Magic Castle where Max Maven brings them through various rooms and shows off magician memorabilia. One item in particular, a milk can used by Houdini during his famous escape tricks, catches Todd's eye. Todd decides that he wants the Freakshow to incorporate an escape artist stunt as a tribute to Houdini. At the Freakshow, Danielle is concerned that Asia has changed since getting her own apartment. She has been dressing differently, has a darker attitude and doesn't keep in contact with her friends or family. Asia says that she has discovered her true self through her new "dark" style and hopes that her mother will respect that. With family tension in the air, Todd decides that he, Phoenix, Danielle and Asia should go to Vegas for a family vacation. He also plans to scout out new locations for the Freakshow expansion while in Vegas. While on vacation, Asia and Danielle are still experiencing some tension in their relationship. Danielle apologizes to Asia and the pair decide that they need to communicate better. As the family explores Vegas, Todd spots some space for rent at the Circus Circus casino and thinks that it could work as a new location for the Freakshow. Back in Venice Beach, the Freakshow is getting under way. To honor Houdini's legacy, Todd has enlisted his friend Harley Newman to perform a death-defying escape act. Encased in nearly half a mile of plastic wrap, Harley attempts to escape from a cocoon-like prison. To make the trick even more dangerous, Todd places a cork on the snorkel that Harvey uses to breathe while encased in the plastic wrap. As the crowd watches, Harley breaks free from the cocoon after being trapped inside without air for nearly five minutes. Todd is happy that his lifelong dream of bringing "real" magic and wonder to the Freakshow is finally coming true.

Right now on "Freakshow"...

If we're gonna expand in Las Vegas,

it's one we should check.

I can see the "Bally's" stage right there.

So, I think this might be the spot.

- Houdini's milk can...
- Holy moly!

This is how we can bring
magic to "The Freakshow."

Let's bring an escape artist.

The man is gonna wrap his entire body.

- Two minutes!
- Two minutes!

And there will be little time
for him to save his own life.

Hold on... hold on!

Harley... Harley!

Folks, today,

you will witness the strangest
creatures on earth,

the living wonders of the world,

and the most amazing people on the planet.

They're all inside.

What you thought was a myth,

you will see with your own eyes.

Welcome to "The Freakshow."

- Hey, Danielle, come here.
- Yeah, what's up?

- I was just talking to Mark.
- Our lawyer?

Yeah... I was talking
to him about Las Vegas,

and he thinks it would be good
for a possible new location.

Oh, does he?

Well, yeah, if we're gonna expand,

it's somewhere we should check.

I've been trying to
figure out the best way

for "The Freakshow" to expand.

And a second location in Vegas
could be the perfect way

to keep spreading wonder to the people.

When you think of a mecca
for entertainment,

the first place you think of is Las Vegas.

Vegas has always been good for us.

- Very good.
- How many family trips...

Some of our best family memories...

- Exactly
- are in Vegas.

Uh-Hmm.

And talking about our family,

I am not sure what's going on with Asia.

What's wrong?

I have been, like, calling Asia.

I've been texting her... I get no response.

And now, she's changing.

She's so dark lately.

And, she's in that apartment by herself.

She doesn't hang out
with her friends anymore.

She's dressing different,

like, I don't know what to do.

I'm really concerned for my daughter.

There's no way that we
can run two locations

and have a lot of issues going on.

Yeah.

It's gonna take a lot
to make this happen.

- Well, I gotta...
- No, listen.

No, I'm gonna talk to her... that's it.

And we're just gonna
have to figure this out.

Let's do it.

Starving like Marvin.

Uh-oh, I got something in the mail.

You're not gonna believe this.

I actually got an invitation

for an exclusive tour
at "The Magic Castle."

Oh, wow!

Nice!

"The Magic Castle" is
a private magicians' club

that is known around the world.

It is a young magician's dream

just to get to walk through the doors

of "The Magic Castle."

It's where all the greats have gone.

I've been trying for years
to get an invitation

because I've always
wanted to include magic

in "The Freakshow."

I'm hoping this tour will
inspire a way for us to do it.

Morgue, I think you'll
really like this part.

The tour is by Max Maven.

Oh, really.

[Laughing]

He's, in my opinion, one of the
best mentalists in the business.

This is like a little
dream come true for me.

Y'all want me to show
you a little something?

- Yeah!
- Let's see...let's see.

My connection to magic
goes all the way back

to when I was six-years-old.

For me it was very important

because I wasn't a very social person.

So magic gave me an opportunity

to interact with people
that I just didn't know.

I'm gonna rifle through these cards...

Okay.

At any point you're gonna
put your finger in there.

Okay... all right.

- Go ahead, take it.
- Take it.

Show it to everybody.

- I don't wanna see it.
- Okay.

Okay, put it right back.

I want you to think about
that card and watch this.

I'm gonna see if I can
make something happen

with your card.

- Okay.
- Okay.

We're gonna just go through...

Oh, one card just somehow
turned itself upside down.

That's my card!

Well, that's interesting...
Here... that's your card.

How'd that happen?

I'm preaching.

He wouldn't listen to me...
He...he...he wouldn't...

[Grunting]

How did you do that?

That's my card.

Wait, is that the one from that?

Yeah, but... look, it fits perfectly.

That's awesome!

Todd's gonna have
to retire those turtles

and come out here with the magic, bro.

Yeah, yeah.

I think we need to talk, honey.

I don't know if you're
like upset about something,

but I call you, you
don't even call me back.

That's not true.

I'm just really getting concerned

because you're dressing really dark.

You're in your apartment by yourself.

And I'm just like...
You used to be so bubbly

and so happy.

Well, I mean, there's a lot of things.

I mean, with the way I was
before, I didn't feel real.

It wasn't satisfying me,

so I made a lot of changes.

You need to respect me so
just give me that space.

Absolutely.

You can have your own space
but still be a family.

My mom thinks that
something's wrong with me

just because I'm dressing differently.

In fact, it's the opposite.

I really just have my own
visions of how I wanna perform

and, you know, how I like
to dress that feels like me

and what I wanna represent.

And I think that's something
my mom should be proud of.

You keep, like, saying
I can't dress like that.

The only reason I ever tell
you to dress more "circusy"

or "old time sideshow" is because

that's the family show that we have here.

I have to be myself.

Be yourself but when you're at work,

you're part of a show.

We're a family... we're a team.

You have to do a certain thing
because it is your job

and you're a performer and this
is what you do in this show.

You're just gonna have to get over that.

This is who your daughter is
and it might be easier for you

to just accept it because otherwise,
we're just gonna keep having conflicts.

Seriously, Asia,
I am like so hurt over you...

The way you are acting,

and I'm so hurt over
the way you are changing.

I'm telling you
I appreciate that you care.

No, I don't wanna hear
that you appreciate it.

That's bulls...

I just wanna do my own thing right now

and really be my own, like...
Express my own stuff,

- that's all.
- Okay... I get it.

I'm done talking... the way
you are treating me now,

I'm not even gonna stand here to listen.

You just don't get it.

You don't get it.

Wow, this is it right here.

You know, I cannot believe
that Max Maven invited us here.

Yeah... I can't wait to meet Max.

This is so cool.

This is a private tour
for us with Max Maven.

I'm hoping this tour will inspire a way

for us to include magic
in "The Freakshow."

What's this?

You got a little note.

"Find wisdom...
Then, speak the magic words."

Here's an owl right here.

Owls are a symbol of wisdom.

Abracadabra.

Sim sala bim.

Hocus pocus.

Let me in... I want a drink.

Open sesame.

Oh, my God!

Yeah!

I love you... let's go in!

Whoa!

Wow!

Welcome to "The Magic Castle".

Nice to meet you, Max.

- Nice to meet you.
- Thanks for invinting us.

It's a pleasure... my name is Max Maven,

and I'm a mentalist.

If you've never had your mind read,

I'm the person you want to see.

If you like, I'll give you a look around.

Yeah, I'd love to.

Follow me.

Being in "The Magic Castle"
is incredible.

There's memorabilia everywhere.

Posters, photos, props,

the various stages.

You don't have to be
a magic geek to love this.

But I am a magic geek, and I do love it.

Now, there is one last room
I wanna make sure you see:

The Houdini seance room.

Holy moly!

This is a milk can,

and they would fill it
on stage with water.

They'd lock him in, and he would escape.

And that's one of the actual cans he used.

Wow!

Max, this is like touching
the holy grail right here.

Are you kidding me?

The one thing a lot of people don't know

is that Houdini got
his start as a magician

in the sideshow.

Houdini was like my hero.

He really gave me this feeling like,

"Todd, no matter what you're trapped in,"

"you can get out of it."

Houdini, the greatest name in magic.

What he did was invent a major spectacle.

This straight jacket right here,

this is the type of thing
he would hang upside down.

And crowds of literally tens of
thousands of people would watch.

If it wasn't for his amazing ability

to create incredible spectacles,

you wouldn't have "The Freakshow,"

and our events and our stunts.

It was this man that started it all.

I'm trying to figure
out right now, actually,

how to incorporate magic.

What I keep being concerned about is

people will look at
someone doing an illusion

and then someone doing
something like sword swallowing,

and they might make the assumption

that that sword is fake.

The thing about escape magic
the way Houdini did it was

that people didn't think
in terms of illusion.

Right.

It seemed to be pure skill.

That might be the way to go.

Maybe an escape artist.

This is how we can bring
magic to "The Freakshow."

Let's bring an escape artist.

Somebody that represents today

part of what Houdini represented.

That's what we're gonna
do for this magic event.

Max, this is really a dream come true

to be here at "The Magic Castle" with you.

- Yeah.
- Thank you.

- Hey.
- Hey!

- How'd it go?
- It was so good.

I got to go in the Houdini seance room.

I touched Houdini's milk can,

and I decided what we're gonna do

- this week.
- What?

We're gonna have an escape artist come.

- Oh, geez.
- Yeah.

My friend, Harley Newman,
the man can suffocate

during this escape.

It's something Houdini
never did in his life.

Oh, gosh.

But, uh, how have you
been feeling today?

Asia and I had a huge fight.

And I think what it is,
she just turned 21,

she left home, and I'm just
feeling this sense of like,

"you don't like me,"

- you know what I mean, like...
- Yeah, well, that's your baby.

I'm feeling like really emotionally...

Like anything she does
I'm overly sensitive to.

I'm struggling.

It's tough being a mama
and letting go of your baby.

When I had Asa, I was 21,

and I'm gonna cry.

She was just my whole world,

and just to see her not
wanna be with me as much

as I wanna be with her,
it just makes me sad.

I need to go to Vegas tomorrow

to check on some possible
spaces for "The Freakshow."

Why don't we just make it a family trip

and that way you and Asia can bond.

I agree 100 percent.

This whole...this whole
thing is the biggest step

of our life.

This is a family business,
so we do it as a family,

- or we don't do it at all.
- I agree.

'Cause I don't think we can
succeed without each other.

This is gonna be your first lesson,

to do a straight jacket.

- How's that feel, Phoenix?
- It's kind of cold... it's nice.

He strange.

Did you ever think you'd
be putting your own son

in a straight jacket?

I thought he was gonna put me in one.

Try... go.

Well, try... come on... keep doing it.

Just keep working.

You got it, you got it, you got it.

Hey, Larry, we need to set up the front.

- Y'all come on.
- Thanks, guys.

Come on.

You wanna see me do the worm next?

Good luck.

Oh, my God, once you go down,
you can't get back up.

Come on... come on.

[Indistinct]

- He'll figure it out.
- Asia, help me!

I'm so excited.

There's the midway sign right there.

We're taking a quick
family trip to Las Vegas.

I used to bring the kids
here all the time,

so, hopefully, it's gonna
give us a chance to cool off

and focus on the magic.

Go, Phoenix... go, Phoenix.

Get it... get it... get it.

Asia, here you try it...
You're really good at it.

- I'm good.
- Do it... come on.

Let's have fun... come on.

This trip to Vegas is
a little uneasy right now

just because all of this
arguing between me and my mom.

- You sure?
- Yeah, I'm sure.

I don't feel like playing games

when we need to take
the time to communicate

and resolve what's going on
instead of just ignoring it.

Hey, you winning?

Uh, I don't really know.

Ah.

Well, I just wanted to talk to you

since we had that argument
the other day and stuff.

If I made you feel bad in any
way like I was judging you,

I completely 100 percent apologize.

When I was your age, like,
I didn't want anyone

telling me what to do or "are you home?"

"Are you here... are you there?"

"Call me."... I totally get it.

I just think that there needs
to be better communication

between all of us because I think, like,

you kind of said comments and
built it up inside yourself,

and then when you went to talk to me,

then that's why it all exploded.

We just need to have better communication

because I don't mind, like, talking

and figuring things out...
You know what I mean?

And you know what I think it is, too?

I think I'm having a really hard time

dealing with you growing up

and dealing with you moving out

and your brother's growing up.

It's like everything is
hitting me all at one time.

And I'm 100 percent sorry...

- Well, thank you.
- If I hurt your feelings in any way,

- cause I love you.
- I love you... thank you.

I love you so much.

I do feel better after
my mom has talked to me

because I think she's
starting to realize that

she needs to kind of let go
and let me do my own thing.

Let me make my own mistakes.

My, you know, my own successes

and just support me in that.

Now let's win some money.

All right... all right,
I'll see you at "The Freakshow."

All right, good.

Yes.

- That was Harley Newman.
- Oh, cool.

So, uh, he's the guy that's
gonna do that crazy escape

for the magic event.

- Tomorrow... he can make it.
- Tomorrow?

I wanna stay.

No, that's gonna be crazy.

What's this over here?

- Where you going?
- I wanna check this out.

It says it's for lease.

It's big... like if
you look in these holes...

Is it just me or is this kind of feeling

like maybe there's something
trying to happen here.

The sideshow was always with the circus.

The circus circus actually has a big top.

They have the circus acts.

They have the midway.

The one thing they don't have
is a sideshow or a Freakshow.

I can see the Bally stage right there.

What do you think, Phoenix?

I could see it right there...
It's really big, though.

Asia, could you help me run it?

Possibly.

I'm gonna call our attorney, Mark,

'cause I think this might be the spot.

All right, let's sit... I'm gonna
call Mark, though, for real.

I feel it.

All right, folks, are you ready

for the world famous
"Venice Beach Freakshow?"

[Cheering]

Now, folks, listen.

Who knows who Houdini is?

Now this man died almost 100 years ago

and yet, you all still know about him.

That's how incredible Houdini was.

So in his memory,
we have a very special guest.

And today, he is actually gonna perform

a death defying escape.

Do y'all wanna see it?

[Crowd cheering]

Come on in... the show's about to begin.

This is the man I was
just introducing you to,

Mr. Harley Newman.

Give him a round of applause.

[Cheers and applause]

I'm Harley Newman... I do
traditional stunts and escapes

for a living.

Only, I've been trying to push,

so instead of doing them
the way they're always done,

they become something different.

My idea for an experiment
is that we're gonna take

all of these rolls

and wrap me up in a little, tiny cocoon.

Harley's gonna be doing one
of the most dangerous escapes

I've ever heard of in my life.

They're gonna take almost
a half a mile of plastic wrap

and begin wrapping it around his body.

And there's only gonna be
a snorkel in his mouth.

That's the only way he's gonna breathe.

When he begins the escape,
I'm gonna put a cork

in that snorkel.

And from that moment on,
there will be no air,

and there will be little time

for him to save his own life.

- Are you ready, Harley?
- Yeah.

- Okay, here we go.
- Five,

four, three, two,

one... go.

Thirty.

Yeah, Harley.

- Come on, Harley.
- Come on, Harley.

- Two minutes.
- Two minutes!

Come on, Harley!

Harley!

- Holy goodness!
- Hurry up!

Come on... you can do it!

You can do it!

You can do it!

Three minutes.

Step back here... step back.

I'll let you know... trust me.

Three minutes, 45 seconds.

Four minutes.

- He's struggling in there...
He's struggling.

No, no, no, he's okay.

Four minutes, 30 seconds.

Harley!

- He's not even moving...
- Get him outta there.

Hold on... hold on!

Harley... Harley!

Give him a minute...
He's gonna let us know.

- He's gonna let us know.
- Get him out!

- He knows what he's doing.
- Harley!

Are you okay, Harley?

Four minutes, 45 seconds.

Almost five minutes... five minutes!

Five minutes.

- Here he comes... here he comes!
- Come on... come on!

[Crowd cheering]

[Crowd cheering]

It's unbelievable that all
these dreams are coming true.

When I was a kid, I was a young magician,

and I dreamed of bringing
wonder to the world.

That's why I opened "The Freakshow."

That's why we're expanding.

We wanna bring magic
and amazement to the masses.

To remind them that
this is a world of magic

where everything is possible

and even the dreams of a little kid

can come true.

Have you ever seen anything like that?

I don't wanna see
anything like that again.

Yes!

[Crowd cheering]

You've got the ace of spades,

there's got the A on it.

You've got the queen of hearts

there's got the Q on it, right?

Watch!

Flip it over to see what you got.

Wow!

Yes!

Well, Max, now I guess I can say

I've performed at "The Magic Castle".

Indeed.

Well, give me a round of applause!

Yeah!
