Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019–…): Season 5, Episode 1 - Episode #5.1 - full transcript

[intense music playing]

[commentator 1] We're gonna have one lap
of racing to decide the championship.

[Hamilton] Is he right behind me?

With new tires?

Michael, that is so not right.
That is so not right.

[commentator 1] Is it gonna be
a first World Championship for Verstappen?

Is it gonna be
an eighth World Championship

for Lewis Hamilton?

- Come on!
- [engines roaring]

[commentator 1] Verstappen takes the lead.

No! No!

[Verstappen] Oh my God!

[fireworks banging]

[Horner] If you want something bad enough,
you'll do whatever it takes.

[energetic percussive music playing]

[Buxton] It's reached a level
I don't think anyone expected.

[Steiner] This is fucking madness.

[Norris] I don't feel sympathy for him.
Why would I?

[Steiner] It was a tough year.

- Fuckin' hell.
- [Buxton] Yuki's a diamond in the rough.

- You can push harder.
- [Tsunoda] Shut up!

[in Italian] We cannot make mistakes.

[commentator 1 in English]
Leclerc's in the wall!

[Leclerc] Ah! It's a disaster.

I need to show them that I'm the one.

[cheering echoes]

- [Wolff] Welcome to Mercedes.
- Thank you.

[Hamilton] He just brake-tested me.

[reporter]
How would you describe relations?

I could have him in a fight.

[Russell] What the fuck was he doing?

[Leclerc] What a cunt.

Come on!

[Gow] It's become all-out war.

- [Horner] Fuck!
- [Wolff] Ah!

There is so much pressure.

[Joseph] Red flag. Red flag. Red flag.

[music builds to climax]

[producer] So Red Bull have a target

[in Italian] Shit. Open the window.
We cannot even breathe in here.

Bloody hell, it's so hot.

And I have to be in here with you.

[screams goofily]

[in English]
Oh boy, here we go! [chuckles]

Hey! [chuckles]

I've known Mattia quite a while,
and we became friends over the years.

We work hard,
but we know also to have fun.

- [in Italian] Hey, keep right!
- [horn blares]

The lorry driver must've said,
"Who are these two idiots?"

"Where the fuck are they going?"
[chuckles]

[in English] We, Haas, share with Ferrari

all the components you are allowed to buy
from another team.

We entered into
a technical collaboration agreement

to buy their engine and all the parts.

And it looks like the Ferrari this year
has got a very competitive car.

[Binotto in Italian]
Check out how I tackle this bend.

- [chuckles]
- Slow down, Mattia.

- This tiny little car...
- You don't trust me?

I have all this stuff.

The seat is now moving forward.

[Binotto]
I've known Guenther for many years.

He is a striking fellow.

I keep telling him,

"You're the protagonist
of the Netflix show now, the leading man."

[Steiner] Very beautiful day.

How... How did you come up with the idea
of becoming a winemaker?

Producing a bit of wine as a hobby.

Wine needs patience, needs time.

- [indistinct]
- Quality and not quantity.

Same as in F1.

[chuckles] Quality, we try,
but sometimes we fail.

So, where are you taking me?

[Binotto] We will pick the grapes.

I'll give you the present
before starting, Mattia.

So you can hide your belly.

[Binotto] Thanks.

In a partnership, in collaboration,

it is very important we know
how to help each other out when needed.

- I will give you a kiss later.
- [all chuckle]

You will eat them all.

There are higher expectations on Ferrari
than any other team.

[dramatic music playing]

Last season, last year,
we had a very bad result.

[Leclerc in English]
The car is so hard to drive.

[crunching, shattering]

Ah, it's so frustrating.

Hey, come on!

[in Italian] Our place
has to be higher up.

We have to compete at every race.

[commentator 2 in English]
They're retiring the Ferrari

before the race even begins.

[Leclerc] Ah! It's a disaster! Fuck!

[Binotto and Steiner chuckle]

[Steiner in Italian] Let's try it.

[Binotto] We are now starting
the 2022 season.

We have worked a lot on this car
to try to come back,

to be competitive
with a very strong car and team.

[server speaking in Italian]

[both] Thanks.

- [server] You're welcome.
- [Binotto] Thanks.

- It's a nice job, Guenther.
- [chuckles]

- Isn't it?
- Oh yes, otherwise I wouldn't do it.

[both chuckle]

[in English] Coming into a season,
it's always filled with opportunity, hope.

And, uh, with the new Ferrari engine,

I'm very confident
that we can come back in the midfield.

[Binotto in Italian] Our objective is
to win the World Championship.

Our red cars, fighting at the front.

We've been dreaming it.

[intense music playing]

[muffled cheering]

[presenter in English] Hello
and welcome to the fan zone

at the Bahrain International Circuit
for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The very first race
of this brand-new F1 2022 season.

[upbeat music playing]

[Steiner] Today the temperature's perfect.

Thank you.

Aw. Yeah. Couldn't be any better.

You're not happy this morning, huh?

I couldn't fall asleep until 2 a.m.

Oh my God!

'Cause of the adrenaline.

[machinery whirring]

[Sainz] Going into the 2022 season,
there's probably the most hype

there's been in the history of the sport.
I'm not gonna lie.

[presenter] Ladies and gentlemen,
World Champion Max Verstappen!

[producer] Max Verstappen,
thanks for coming back.

All right.

[producer] How you feel
about being in the chair?

- [energetic music playing]
- Um...

It's quite comfortable, so... [chuckles]

Looking forward to Sunday.
Get out there and fucking crush it.

- [Verstappen] "Fucking crash it"?
- [Pérez] Don't crash it!

I see, you want drama. [chuckles]

[producer] We like to think
it's a documentary...

- It's not a documentary.
- [chuckles]

This is more close to Top Gun
than a documentary.

[presenter]
Now please welcome our next team,

we have George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

[Russell] Yeah, I'm feeling good,
ready for the season.

This is groovy.

[music halts]

[exhales deeply] Ah.

[whistles through teeth]

[rock guitar music playing]

- [producer] Good?
- Yep.

[presenter] Please welcome AlphaTauri,

Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly.

My goal in my career
is to make it to the point

that I don't need to introduce myself
to you guys anymore. [laughs]

[presenter] And our next team
are on the way. It is McLaren.

Way too early.

- Oh, you gonna drive?
- Oh, I'm driving.

You're in the back, baby.

- What fucking time do you call this?
- [woman] Not my fault, I can guarantee.

It was whose fault?

[woman] It was not mine.

[Norris] I've got a girlfriend, Luísa.

Oh no. Your door's open, baby.

- You have to shut it sometimes.
- [Luísa] Wait a second.

- Go.
- Go, go, go.

[Norris] So, uh, yeah,
everything is going well.

And I'm enjoying it all.

[laughs]

[Norris imitates car engine]

Going into a season like this,
we wanna take that next big step.

Pole position, man.

How you doing, guys? All good?

2022 represents a new dawn for Formula 1.

It is the biggest overhaul

that Formula 1's technical regulations
have ever had.

In terms of car design,

everything from the ground up
this year is brand new.

- Interesting, looking at the differences.
- [Vettel] It's completely different.

[Sainz] It is crazy
how different everyone went.

[Buxton] With these new regulations,

the cars are able
to follow each other closer,

and then you get more racing,
better action.

It's cool, huh?

[Leclerc] Oh.

[Domenicali] The fact that the drivers
will be able to compete in a closer way

will create, you know, all this drama.

And I'm pretty sure
that most of the drivers will love it

because they are fighters.

Like in the Coliseum
of the old days, you know.

[Sainz] Whose seat is that?

Checo's, I think, because of the fat ass!

[drivers chuckle]

[Buxton] I think everyone's excited
about this season

because it's a step into the unknown.

The new technical regulations
have come hand-in-hand with a cost cap.

All the big teams
will have less money to play with.

There's so much potential
for the order to be flipped.

Why do you always
have cool stuff on your car?

I've not actually seen it yet.

[Russell] When I saw our car
and I saw everybody else's car,

I thought,

"Fuck, this looks fast."

And I think everybody was shocked
with what Mercedes produced.

[Vettel] I have to say, it does look shit.

- I don't know, mate.

I'm not an engineer. I'm just a driver.

It looks like when you drop dough,

[Hamilton] Ferrari looked like they had
things sorted. The car looked amazing.

Obviously, a lot different to ours.

- [Sainz] So who got it right?
- [Leclerc] My God, I don't know.

[Hamilton] The car looks great,
but it's so different to everyone.

[Sainz] Hey, how are you?

They're all getting pretty excited, eh?

As long as it's fast,

who cares?

[Sainz] We felt like,
the car already, when we presented it,

we knew that it was a pretty good car.

somewhere close in the fight for winning.

This is a feeling I've never had before,

and it's the... the best feeling
that you can have as a racing driver.

Be cool if we get to race though.

[Leclerc] Yeah.

I am confident

because I know
how much work we've done in the past

to get to this point.

It's just excitement, really,
to get out on track

[Steiner] You still remember? I'm checking
that you do everything right.

After one year of holiday.

- Enjoy it.
- [Magnussen] Will do.

[Steiner] Kevin's now back a second time.

You know,
the always-come-back guy, you know,

and this is Kevin's last chance

New regulations, radically different cars.

Now we go driving for real.

[Horner] So strategy today?

If we are fastest, we will win.

[Horner] Excellent.
Right. See what we get.

[Buxton] Qualifying is everything

because it determines your
starting position on the grid on Sunday.

You wanna start from the front

because you've got
the other 19 drivers starting behind you.

- [Brown] How's the car feel yesterday?
- [Riccardo] Balance was not terrible.

- Just... Just finding it.
- Yeah.

- Have fun.
- All right. Thanks.

[Buxton] Coming into qualifying,
there's a level of uncertainty.

The cars are so different this year.

Every single driver
is gonna be trying to get to grips

with something completely new.

- [Gannon] Watch for Sainz behind.
- Fuck!

Comes across the line and it's 12th.

[commentator 1] Back to Kevin Magnussen,
and that Haas has got pace.

[Komatsu] Oh, fuck!

He lost power steering
at the beginning of in lap. Fuck.

[Regan] Be careful with power steering.
We've got a hydraulic issue.

Okay, no gearshifts slowing down.
No gearshifts.

[Regan] No gearshifts. No gearshifts.

We're gonna see
if we can get the car sorted.

Fucking hell.
It's going to be controversy, this.

- Yes, yes, yes.

[Binotto] For Ferrari,
competing for victory is in the DNA.

We know that it's not easy.
The opponents are very strong.

We have to become
stronger and competitive.

This has to be our objective.

[intense music builds]

[commentator 3 in English] A new adventure
in Formula 1 is about to blast into action

at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain.

[crowd cheering]

The first race of the new season
is the acid test.

The real test for these ten new cars.

They've never been raced wheel to wheel.

Now it's down to the drivers
to get them over the line.

[Leclerc] Fighting with Max
is always on the limit.

We've been racing each other
for most of our careers.

[Verstappen] We basically grew up
throughout the racing ranks.

We had a few really close battles.
We had a few collisions.

Back then, we were not best friends,

but now we both landed two top teams,
and we're fighting for the Championship.

[Leclerc] I want to beat him
as much as he wants to beat me,

and that's the way it is,

and that's the way
also it has always been.

[commentator 3] What a great effort
by Magnussen in the Haas

to qualify seventh.

[Magnussen] I'm pretty nervous.

When you've not driven a race car
for more than a year,

when you're under pressure,

it's easier to do a mistake.

[Steiner] With Kevin going into
his first race,

there's always the doubt out there.

Hopefully, he can go through the race
without making any mistakes

because he had to get the feel
of going racing with an F1 car again.

[Magnussen] When I get in the car
and I'm strapped in,

I've got to perform.

[commentator 3] So the formation lap
is underway here in Bahrain.

[commentator 3] The drivers haven't done
a race in these cars.

Who knows what this is gonna bring?

[Regan] Thirty seconds.
Have a good one, buddy.

[Magnussen] Yep. Go for it, guys.

- [Lambiase] Radio check.
- [Verstappen] Yeah. Radio check.

[Padros] Last car is on the grid.

[commentator 1]
We've got 20 cars all lined up.

Brand-new season.

Brand-new dawn for Formula 1.

[intense music builds to climax]

Five lights on.

- [engines roaring]
- [commentator 2] We're racing in Bahrain!

[commentator 1]
Brilliant start for Charles Leclerc.

[commentator 2] Verstappen's coming
with him into turn one.

[commentator 1] But it's Leclerc
on the inside of Verstappen.

Into the lead.

[energetic music playing]

[commentator 2]
Magnussen now on the outside.

He fancies getting involved in a fight
with Pérez in the Red Bull.

[team cheering]

Go on, Kev!

[commentator 2]
He goes round the outside of Sergio Pérez.

[cheering]

[Regan] This is awesome. Good job.

[commentator 2]
Big lock-up there from Magnussen.

Pérez is gonna be right on the back
of him now.

Ah, shit!

[commentator 2]
And Pérez has gone alongside.

He's through.

Nothing Magnussen can do.

Fuck.

[Bird] Okay, nicely done.
Let's build the margin now.

Go on, Checo!

[commentator 2]
Pérez has got a run on Hamilton.

Goes to the outside
and breezes by Hamilton.

[scattered applause]

Well done, mate.

[Hamilton]
So fast on the straight, those guys.

[Bono] Yeah. Copy.

[commentator 2] Russell is on the attack,
trying to get Kevin Magnussen.

[Magnussen] I keep locking the left front.

[commentator 2] Down into turn one.

Oh, another big lock up from Magnussen.

And that's easy for Russell to get past.

Magnussen down to seventh.

All through his own doing.

[commentator 1] Charles Leclerc,
he is the man in the lead.

[Padros] And box now. Box. Pit confirmed.

[Leclerc] Copy. Box.

[commentator 2] In from the lead
of the race, Charles Leclerc.

[wheel gun whirring]

[commentator 2] This is a neat stop,
so he should keep the lead.

[Lambiase] Okay,
so Leclerc ahead of you at pit out.

[Padros] You're ahead of Verstappen.

[commentator 1]
Max Verstappen right on Charles Leclerc.

[Padros] Verstappen behind with DRS.

[Lambiase] Max, the overtake is available.

[crowd cheering in distance]

[commentator 2]
And Max Verstappen gets in front!

[commentator 1] But now
can Leclerc get back at Verstappen?

[overlapping encouragement]

[Leclerc] Come on.

[commentator 1] He retakes the lead.

[team members cheering]

[Padros] Verstappen behind with DRS.

[Leclerc] Okay.

[commentator 1] He's doing it again.
He's going for it again, Max Verstappen!

[commentator 1]
But once again, Leclerc's got the DRS.

[commentator 1] The second lap running,
Leclerc is back through!

Fantastic fight.

[Padros] Really good job.
Keep it like this.

[Lambiase] Push, Max, push.

[Verstappen] Mate, my steering wheel
is feeling very heavy.

[commentator 2]
Big lock-up from Verstappen.

[Verstappen] Oh God, it's locked.

[commentator 2] Leclerc and Verstappen
have swapped the lead five times

in the last two laps.

[Padros] Gap to Verstappen behind, 1.2.

Doing a good job.

[commentator 2] So, Leclerc
holding onto the lead now for Ferrari.

- [team cheering]
- [Leclerc] Come on!

[commentator 2]
Magnussen might get done by Gasly here.

[Regan] Mode push. Mode push.

[commentator 2] The Frenchman goes
right around the outside.

Magnussen trying to stay with him.

Go on!

Come on, Kev!

Come on!

[commentator 2] And Magnussen's back ahead
of Gasly, back in the seventh place.

[Regan] Mega job, mate.

[Komatsu] Fucking awesome.

[Gasly] You can see
I'm slowly dropping the pace.

[commentator 2] And that's Gasly.
Gasly is out of the race.

[Gasly] The car switched off.

And then suddenly I started to feel
really hot air

at the back of my neck.

Suddenly I start to see these big flames.

At that moment, it's more like
the instinct that takes over.

Trying to extract myself
as fast as possible.

This is a dangerous sport,

and it will always remain
a dangerous sport.

[commentator 2] The AlphaTauri's
on fire on the exit of turn three.

That will almost certainly
bring out the safety car.

[Padros] Safety car deployed.
Safety car deployed.

Now next car behind is Verstappen.

[commentator 2] They cars will bunch up
behind the safety car,

meaning they can clean up
that Gasly mess.

[Lambiase] There will be seven racing laps
when we get going.

[commentator 1] Charles Leclerc, he's got
them queuing up right behind him.

Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz,

Sergio Pérez, Lewis Hamilton,
George Russell, Kevin Magnussen,

all gonna be going for it.

[Magnussen] Are we still P7?

[Regan] That's confirmed, yeah. Still P7.

[commentator 1] The action is gonna hot up
here in Bahrain once again.

[energetic rock music playing]

[Lambiase] Okay, safety car in this lap.

[Padros] Safety car in this lap.

[commentator 2] There goes Leclerc, hits
the throttle, gets the race back underway.

[commentator 1] Sainz is coming at
Verstappen for second place.

Verstappen stays ahead
going into turn one.

[Verstappen] Mate,
what's going on with the battery?

Can I... What the fuck is this?

[Horner] Fuck.

[Adami] Verstappen,
he has an issue, confirm.

And attack.

[commentator 1]
Carlos Sainz overtakes Max Verstappen.

And it's a Ferrari one-two
here in Bahrain.

[cheering in distance]

[Verstappen] What do you want me to do?

[Lambiase] There's not a lot we can do.

[commentator 1] And will Verstappen
be passed by his teammate Sergio Pérez?

Yes, he has been.

And he's been passed by Hamilton,

and he's been passed by Russell.

[Verstappen] Engine's shitting itself!

[commentator 1]
Max Verstappen is out of the race!

[engine sputtering]

[Horner] Unbelievable.

- [Pérez] I'm losing power.
- [Horner] For fuck's sake.

[Bird] Two laps to go.
You've got this. Elbows out.

[Bono] Looks like
Pérez may be losing power too.

[commentator 1] Hamilton closing in.

- [Pérez] I lost the fucking engine.
- [Bird] Yeah.

[Pérez] Unbelievable.

[commentator 1] Red Bull has just turned
to ultimate disappointment.

[Pérez] Fuck this shit.

[commentator 1] This man, Charles Leclerc,
wins the Bahrain Grand Prix.

- [Padros] P1.
- [Leclerc] Let's go!

[crowd cheering]

[fireworks sparking]

[Leclerc] That's exactly how
we should start the season. Come on!

[commentator 1] And it is a one-two finish
for the Scuderia.

Kevin Magnussen, he's fifth.

[cheering, applause]

[Regan] Kev, that is P5, buddy.

[Magnussen] Come on!

[cheering]

[Magnussen] Oh, man, thank you.

That was fucking perfect.

Ah! Yee!

[Steiner] Kevin, that was
some fucking Viking comeback.

Fucking great. I cannot believe it.

[Magnussen] All that hard work,
fucking shitty results last three years,

have all paid off.

P5, guys. Come on.

[crowd cheering]

[team members cheering]

[Horner] Fuck.

[cheering]

[Binotto in Italian] Finishing at
the front at the finish line,

it was a very big emotion for all of us.

[Leclerc in English] It feels amazing.

Yeah, we couldn't ask for anything better.

[cheering]

[Steiner] Oh, fuckin' hell.

- You didn't think of that one, huh?
- No.

I didn't! [laughs]

It's weird to be lucky with you guys.

Not used to that.

We keep getting all this shit,
and this time, actually...

It fucking went our way. Yeah, it's like...

- Kevin, this is fucking medicine.
- Yeah.

I... I needed this as well, you know.

Spoke with Gene. He's happy as shit.

- I can imagine.
- Yeah.

Thanks again, man.

[fan] Allez, Guenther!

[Steiner chuckles]

Nobody expected us to come back like this.

There's always people who say,
"You'll never come back,"

and, "You're last now forever."

All of a sudden, there we are
behind the big boys, you know?

That was always the intention.

I think Mattia, he went through
something similar we went through.

Getting a lot of shit from people,
you know, so...

I mean, uh, we better don't listen
to these people in future, huh? [chuckles]

- E salute.
- Cheers.

["La Donna É Mobile" by Verdi playing]

[Steiner in Italian] Does your nose fit?

[Binotto] It does. If yours fits,
then mine will without problems!

[both chuckle]

[Hamilton] There's an incredible amount
of bouncing.

[Wolff] Lewis, sorry for the shitbox
to drive at the moment.

You've got a problem,
change your fucking car. z

I can tell you that all of you
are playing a dangerous game.

[cars clattering, crunching]

[Carmen] Oh my God.

[Russell] Seeing him being trapped
in that car, that's a driver's worst fear.

[dramatic music playing]

[Szafnauer] F1 is more ruthless than
any business I've ever been involved in.

[Steiner] If he wants to stay,
he has to perform like everybody else.

Let's have a fucking good one.

[Padros] Stay out!

[Leclerc] Fuck! What are you doing!?

You start to see cracks.

- [Schumacher] Fuck.
- [Brown] We can't keep going on like this.

[Gasly] What is that?

Making something up?
He said they want your blood.

[Sainz] I'm gonna go full Latino mode.

I'm just over it.

[Brown] Alpine wanna sue Piastri,
which is fucking crazy.

I'm a McLaren racing driver now.

[commentator 1] Red Bull win!

[Pérez] Vamos!

We did not cheat.

[Hamilton] I'm gonna give it everything.

It's simple.
If you are not performing, you're out.

- Oh no!
- Don't worry. My fart does not smell.

[Oñoro] Vamos!

- [Brown] We need to start considering...
- Fuck!

...what a change would look like.

Fuck.

[music builds to climax]

Fuck 'em all.

[energetic outro music playing]
