Falling Skies (2011–2015): Season 4, Episode 5 - Mind Wars - full transcript

After freeing Matt from the Espheni Youth Camp, Tom encounters two mysterious strangers in the woods, who attack his family before embarking with him on a violent journey. Hal faces almost insurmountable odds as he tries to lead the remaining Volm and 2nd Mass to a place of perceived safety. Lexi and Anne have a difference of opinions - resulting in dangerous consequences.

Don't do it.

Please.

- We're almost home.
- There's no home.

Not yet.

We haven't eaten in three days.

Dan, you all right?

Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Let's keep moving.

There's no one here.

It's a message from Hal.
See, I told you he'd be fine.

Hal's telling us they had to leave. Those
numbers should tell us where they went.

Why don't we try to scare up some food
while you decipher that message?

Hey, Dad, what are you looking at?

Uh, coordinates.

Longitude and latitude.

Thirty miles to the southwest.

- Right there.
- Hm.

Another hike. We can do it.
What do you think's over there?

I don't know.

"Croatoan" implies that Hal took everybody
to a safer place. I suggest we go join them.

...took place. A place of... All of...

Point-Two six...

A place of peace.

Goes down about a hundred yards,
turns around, comes back.

It's too tight. We can't get 50 people
through without that taking notice.

We gotta find another way.

All right. So this Way's out.

Safety zone from Lourdes' transmission
can't be more than 10 miles away.

The Espheni have this area locked down
looking for escapees.

Well, with no firepower,
we can't even fight our way through.

Yeah. Our only chance might be
to sneak through their lines.

Mechs, mechs and more mechs.

Here and here.

So you're saying the scout was a success.

Just another scar to show the grandkids.
We barely made it out of there.

We bumped into a couple of skitters.
It wasn't good.

Next time, we might not be so lucky.

No escape route.
We're just sitting targets here.

It's only a matter of time before we get...

You're not much of the cheerleading type,
are you, Dingaan?

All right. We gotta find a better way to
get some intel on these Espheni positions.

We can't make it through
if we don't know where the mines are.

Yeah, well, I left my crystal ball
back in the magical land of Oz.

There actually might be a way.

I need to see the Volm about a map.

We feared you had been captured.
There are Espheni troops everywhere.

We just thought we'd play
a little hide and seek.

That was the overlord from the ghetto,
the one I burned.

For an overlord to personally oversee ground
forces is atypical of Espheni tactics.

He's looking for you, Tom.

Well, let him look.

We're gonna put as much distance
between this place and us as possible.

- Did you find any food?
- Unfortunately, no...

...but I did find this
in one of the office closets.

Got some mileage on it,
but it's gonna come in handy.

Sure could have used this
when we saw that cottontail, huh, buddy?

You know, I'm sure that Hal rounded up
some supplies before they bugged out.

I can tough it out, sir.

Yeah, don't worry.
We know exactly where Hal's headed.

Can't be more than a day ahead of us.

I cannot join you, I'm afraid.

Why not?

It is imperative that I confirm
the position of my reconnaissance team.

Progress must continue on locating
the Espheni power source.

I will find you as soon as I'm able.

- Might be kind of dangerous out there alone.
- I will be fine.

And I will be joining you soon. Uh...

Be safe, Tom Mason.

You too.

Cochise.

Gentlemen.

- Think he'll be okay, Dad?
- He's gonna be fine.

He knows how to handle himself.
Let's move out.

What are your plans for my daughter?

- I'm protecting her.
- From what?

I'm warning you.
This can get very ugly very fast.

Why were you sent here
to interfere with her?

No one sent me.

I'm acting on my own to keep her safe,
to join her on the path to peace.

You expect me to believe
you want peace between our races?

You don't have even the slightest idea
what she is, do you?

I'm not like the others.
I'm not involved in your war.

Lexi is something new and unique, a link
between human and Espheni. Believe me.

I don't.

What possible reason
could I have for trusting you?

If you don't, it could be very dangerous
for her and you.

Something's wrong with Ben.

What are you doing to him?

This connection is difficult for him.
I don't want any harm to come to him.

Let him go. Now.

Now.

It's too much for him. He needs a break.

Don't think this is over.

I'm coming back.
And next time, I won't be so gentle.

You will tell me what I want to know.

Looks like they got the trucks moving.

I knew Hal was okay.

We can follow these tracks.
Let's keep our eyes open.

Heads up.

We got bogeys up there.

You smell that?
They're cooking something.

Could be refugees from the ghetto.

- Probably best we go around them.
- Dad.

They have food.

Okay.

- Maybe this time we'll catch a break.
- I'll cover you.

Stick with me, Matt. Stay close.

Whoa.

We don't want any trouble.

We've been on the run a few days,
and we smelled your food.

Who's "we"?

Well, let's just start with me.
Name's Tom Mason.

Don't have any more food, pal. Sorry.

- Tom Mason?
- Yeah.

- You're a legend, man. You're the Ghost.
- Oh, we heard all about you.

Yeah, I'm Nick Phillips.
This is my brother, Cooper.

Hey, what's ours is yours.
Please, come join us.

This is Colonel Weaver, my son Matt.

- Hey, Matt.
- Colonel.

Come over by the fire. There you go.

You go easy on that.
You'll give yourself a gut ache.

That's all right. A gut ache
is exactly what the doctor ordered.

- Thank you.
- Our pleasure.

You said you would talk to him,
but instead, you took him hostage.

You lied to me, my own mother.

The Espheni are monsters, Lexi.

- He's not like the others.
- He's lying to you.

You said you only wanted to talk.
That you wouldn't harm him.

I haven't harmed him.
I'm only trying to protect you.

So is he. When the walls came down,
when we had to run...

...he found me.
He kept me safe. You have to let him go.

I can't do that.

Don't make me defy you.
We both know I don't need your permission.

Maybe not, but I am still your mother.

And you do need to deal with me, Lexi.

Because I have been fighting those animals
a lot longer than you can imagine.

That thing is locked up for a damn good
reason, and that is to protect you.

That's my job.

I'm not gonna stop until I know you
and the rest of our family is safe.

I need him,
and you're keeping him from me.

Lexi.

Lexi.

Lexi! Lexi!

Lexi.

Lexi.

Hold it and then just let it go.
Like this. Whack.

- All right. Okay.
- Your brother's good with kids.

You know, Coop was a sous chef
at a Cajun place...

...in Augusta before the aliens.

A sous chef. Classic. How about you?

I worked at Goldman Sachs.
How funny is that?

Long way from Wall Street.

A few years ago,
if you told me I'd be out in the woods...

...drinking Kentucky bourbon
by the fire, hiding from aliens...

- Whoo.
- You guys are pretty well outfitted.

We've been scavenging every building
and house for the last three years.

Where'd you find all this stuff?

Couple weeks ago...

...we came across an old Mormon
farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.

You know Mormons.
They got seven years of food stored up...

...so we took as much
as we could and headed out.

Mormons drink alcohol?

Jack Mormons do.

- To the Latter-Day Saints.
- God bless them.

Where did you come from?

We, uh, escaped from a skitter farm.

A skitter farm?

They, uh...
They've been trying to harness adults...

...trying to turn us into skitters.

They dropped me into this pen
with a bunch of strangers.

Started picking people out at random.
I could hear the screams.

Sometimes these people
would come back.

Their bodies deformed,
skin shed like a snake.

Other times...

...they'd have this sort of harness
grafted onto their bodies, choking them.

They couldn't speak,
but I could see the pain in their eyes.

But most of the time, they just died.

They hadn't perfected the process yet.
Beta testing, I guess.

One night, uh...

...they cleared us all
out of that damn pen.

Suddenly, there was this explosion. It was
enough of a diversion for me to get away.

And when I got back to my people, it was...

Well...

...it was too late.

We've all lost people.
I'm sure you did everything you could.

Coop was the only one
from my group who got away.

Thank God for that.
Otherwise, I'd be all alone.

Damn it, Coop. You almost hit me.

All right, Matt.

Time to turn in.

Long day tomorrow.

Uh, feel free.

Make yourselves at home, you guys.

- I don't know about these guys.
- Me neither.

- Play it safe tonight.
- Right.

I'll take the first watch.

Can we use your recon drones
to track the Espheni troop movements?

No. Because they're all searching
for the Espheni power source.

However, there's one course of action
that could provide the intel we need.

So you gonna tell me
what you have in mind...

...or are we gonna stare at each other
until the sun comes up?

That would be a terribly
inefficient use of our time.

- We'd further exhaust ourselves by
morning... - Shaq, I was being sarcastic.

Huh.

What I have to suggest is...

...highly irregular.

Whoa. Ha-ha-ha.

Easy there, chief.

You're quick on the draw, aren't you?

Suppose I've gotten that way, yeah.

Ah.

It's too quiet out here.
Makes me feel uneasy.

Like there's skitters' eyes on us.

Sometimes there are.

So how did you hear about the Ghost?

Well, we came across
a couple of people that you liberated.

Oh, come on, man. You're famous.

Mormon farmhouse.

Fully stocked.

It's almost too good to be true.

The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Mysterious?

Or suspicious?

You calling me a liar, friend?

Cooper.

Hey, Coop. Get over here.

- We were right about those guys.
- Where's my dad?

He's gone. Matt. Matt. Matt.

We're gonna find him. I promise.

We'll find him. We'll track them down.
We'll find their trail. I promise.

So imagine our surprise
when the almighty Ghost fell into our lap.

You know, there's a big price on your head
from the Espheni. You know that, right?

Is that why you're doing this?
For a bounty?

Nothing's quite that simple, Mason.

I escaped from the skitter farm
like I told you...

...but the group my brother and I
were with got wiped out.

So the only way for us to survive was
to start playing for the winning team.

I want to know what you did
to my friend and my son.

- Don't talk to him, Cooper.
- Tell me. I heard the shots.

You want to know what I did?

I shot them while they slept,
tucked away in their sleeping bags.

They didn't know what hit them.

In their sleeping bags?

You son of a bitch. You couldn't even
look them in the eye when you did it?

Hey, you, shut up. You don't give
us any trouble, or you're next.

Come on. Let's go.

Come on. Let's go.

She's burning up.

Lexi?

She was so upset,
and then she just collapsed.

You shouldn't have done that to her.

When she's mad,
she has a hard time controlling her powers.

I didn't do anything to her, Lourdes.
Maybe they did. Maybe you did.

You daughter's very special.

Well, inexplicable, really. Knowing her
has had a profound effect upon me.

Just seeing what the human psyche
is capable of inspired me.

She inspires everyone.

All right.

Well, I'm gonna take a blood sample,
but I'm not...

This can't be right. Must be broken.

One-eighteen. How is that possible?

It isn't.

Anything over 108,
and her body would be shutting down...

...her proteins breaking down,
melting away.

- Mom.
- Oh.

- Lexi?
- Help me.

Oh. Oh, baby. I'm trying.

I'm on fire.

Oh.

Lexi.

Just like clockwork.

These things are as reliable as FedEx.
It's got to be timed just right.

Keep that thing tight.

Do you think there's any way,
anytime soon...

...that you might give me pointers
on how to stick it to the enemy?

- Is that some sort of euphemism?
- No.

You know what I'm talking about.
Nothing fancy.

Just maybe how to shoot down
something ugly.

We'll talk about it some other time.

Don't blow me off.

I'm tired of running and hiding.
I want to fight back.

I want to take my end-of-the-world anger
out on someone other than a guy like you.

All right. Then it starts now.

Wanna go for a ride?

Thought you'd never ask.

Ready for this fastball? Unh.

In the event of a change in cabin pressure,
stick your head between your legs.

Kiss your ass goodbye.

We get what we need?

Whoo! We crushed that thing
like a cheap beer can.

- Don't get cocky.
- Heh.

Highly irregular.

He's leaving breadcrumbs.
A trail for us to follow.

Don't worry, Matt. We're gonna find him.

These idiots don't even know
we're tracking them.

They can't be far beyond that ridge.
They'll have to make camp soon.

That's where we'll ambush them.

Uh, well...

- You want to get revenge on these guys?
- Not just revenge.

I want to punish them.
Make them pay for what they've done.

- I want to make them pay too, Matt.
- I've lost my mom...

...maybe my brothers, my sister, now
my dad. You don't mess with my family.

- Hey, Matt...
- They deserve whatever they're gonna get.

Yeah, I understand that...

...you're angry.
I'm angry too, but believe me...

...when someone hurts your family...

...it can make you...

It can make you feel kind of crazy.

I understand.

But the fastest way to get beat
on the battlefield is to let the enemy...

...make you forget who you are, you know.

I had a drill sergeant
back in basic training...

...that used to tell us...

...the true soldier doesn't fight
because he hates what's in front of him.

He fights because
he loves what's behind him.

Okay.

So, what do you do with all the hate?

What do you do with all the hate?

I'll tell you what you do with it.
You put it aside.

That's what a real soldier does.

If you let that hate destroy who you are...

...then you lose everything,
and we can't...

We cannot let that happen to us.

You're part of a family, Matt.

A father who loves you,
brothers, a sister now.

You fight for them if you fight.

You're a Mason.

You come from a long line of Masons,
brave Masons.

I understand. But I still want to make them
pay for what they've done.

I should have known you were dirty
as soon as you told me...

...you were working for Goldman Sachs.

What do you think is gonna happen after you
turn me over? You're gonna be out of chips.

Ignore him, Coop.

You always do what your brother tells you?

How long has that been going on?
Your whole life? Nick's puppet?

- Shut up.
- I told you to ignore him, Coop.

Probably better do
what your brother says, huh?

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Well, I guess that makes us even.

Aah! Aah.

Now we're even.

- Good?
- Yeah.

All right. I'm gonna get some firewood.

You keep an eye on him until I get back.

You've got kids, don't you?

I could tell...

...by the way my son responded to you.

I've got three boys.

And a girl now too.
The one you killed was my youngest son.

His name was Matt.

He was only 8 when the Espheni came.

Kind of the perfect age.

That's the age he'll always be.

Like I said, his name was Matt.

I was proud of him.

He was a brave boy.

His name was Matt.

- I'm tired of your mouth.
- You can't shut me up.

What are you gonna do, kill me?

Oh, right, you can't kill me.

- I guess that makes you kind of...
- Please, just stop talking.

Let me guess. This was Nick's idea.

I had kids.

Two of them.

What were their names?

Alex and Josh.

They're dead.

I wasn't able to be there for them
when they were growing up.

Got you, you son of a bitch.

We can't storm their position
without putting your dad in jeopardy.

Just gonna have to be patient.

Just waiting for the right moment.

I got you.

Don't do it.

Matt.

Go stand in those trees over there.

- You don't need to see this.
- No.

I want to take the shot.

Well...

...all right.

I understand.

Go ahead. Take it.

See him?

Yeah.

If you're off by an eighth of an inch...

...you might just wound that guy.

Off by more than that,
you might hit your father.

Count to three.

Okay.

One.

Two.

I can't do it.

I'm sorry, colonel.

No. You're not sorry.

You're a human being.

Hey.

You're a human being. That's why.

Don't be sorry.

It's okay.

Hey.

Matt.

I want to get a little bit closer.

You wait here, soldier.

Okay.

I need your help. Lexi is burning up.

She has a fever over 120 degrees.
I think she's dying.

Are you doing this?

You say you care for her. If so, stop this.

You have taken everything from me.

My son is dead. Tom is probably dead.

You've twisted my daughter
and fed her lies.

Everything and everyone I've ever loved.

I am offering you a chance at redemption.

I know you know how to save her.

Will you?

Lourdes is with Lexi, calming her down.

And what about you?

Must have been awful being connected
to that thing. You feeling better?

Good as new.
It's a fringe benefit of being a freak.

Pain, injury doesn't keep me
down for too long.

You're not a freak, Ben.

What you are is incredibly brave.

I know you can't speak English, but you
sure as hell can nod your head yes or no.

So I'm asking you once more.
Will you stop this?

Fine.

You've really left me no other choice.

Aah!

What's wrong?

- Aah! Oh!
- Geez. What's happening? Oh, my God.

- Aah!
- Okay. Okay. Okay. What is it?

Tell me! Tell me! Tell me how to save her!

Flower! Flower!

Anne! Anne, stop!

It's killing Ben. Ben keeps saying something
about a flower. What does it mean?

I know what it means.

We're gonna stay all night.

What is this place?
Rendezvous point with the enemy?

You mean your enemy? Yeah.

This...

This is home base.
Soon we'll, uh, send up a flare.

They'll come collect, and Coop and I will
be home free. Simple trade. Done and done.

Tell me again about that skitter farm.

People were dying left and right,
but you got out.

How'd you survive?

I told you.

- There was an explosion.
- Yeah, that is what you said.

But I keep wondering if you didn't
make a simple trade then too.

- That is what you're good at. Making deals?
- Shut up...

...or the Espheni won't kill you,
I will do it myself.

When did you make the deal, Nick?

How did it feel to give up
your friends, your family?

I said shut up!

Tell me that's not how it went down.

Don't listen to him, Coop.
He's just trying to get in your head.

Nick...

...tell me you didn't.

You're their uncle.

- Josh and Alex loved you.
- I loved them too!

But how long were they gonna survive
in that place?

How long were we gonna survive?
I was gonna be harnessed.

But it wasn't about you.

- They were my boys.
- You're not gonna shoot me.

I'm your brother.
Put it down, for God's sake.

I need to hear it from your mouth.

I want you to tell me.

I did it for us, Coop.

The boys, it was just a matter of time.

You and I had a chance if I made a deal.

They were gonna turn me into a monster.

I knew it.

Deep down, I knew it.

I knew you gave my kids away
and I just ignored it.

Because you're my brother...

...and I love you.

I love you too, Coop.

That's why I protected you our whole lives.

There's nothing to live for anymore.

We both lost our children.

Just playing it safe.

Whoo.

So, what is it, exactly, that you're doing?

Using the mech's transmitter array to link
into the Espheni remote frequency.

I'm patched into the Espheni
command broadcast.

The icons represent the location
of all enemy patrols in this area.

- And this is real time? This is right now?
- Yes.

Purple arrows are beamers.
Red triangles, skitters.

Green circles are mechs.

Awesome.

This is Lourdes' safety zone right here.

There aren't any Espheni troops there.

None at all. It's unbelievable.

All right, we'll take this path right here.

Be there in a couple hours.

Well done.

There you go.

Lexi showed me this flower before.

It's special.

Today, right now,
we're on the same side. Agreed?

Of course.

Mom?

I'm here.

Can I have some more tea?

You can have anything you want.

Lourdes.

What was that about?

I asked her to leave us alone.

I need you to promise
not to hurt him again.

You know I can't promise that.

I never wanted to choose
between you and him.

No skitters, mechs, or beamers.

I'm surprised.

This safety zone might
actually be for real.

Listen to the born-again optimist.

- Let's not get ahead of ourself, huh?
- I agree.

Seems safe for now.

Hey, Dad, Why'd that guy kill his brother?

Well...

...sometimes in extreme situations,
things can get...

Um...

I don't know. The truth is,
those guys weren't really brothers.

- What are you talking about? They said...
- It doesn't matter what they said.

Family isn't about whose womb you
come from or whose blood type you share.

It's, um...

You remember when your mom
and I went out...

...and left Ben in charge
for the first time?

And you guys had that huge fight,
and you kicked a hole in the bedroom door.

- I didn't...
- Yeah, it was obvious.

No, you weren't fooling anybody.
And he took the rap for you, right?

Because that's what real brothers do.

Whether they're blood relatives or not.

They look out for each other.

Those guys may have been related, but they
weren't brothers. There's a difference.

Thanks, colonel, for taking the shot.
I would have missed.

Someone knocked out Anthony
and let the monk go.

- What?
- He's gone.

You had no right to keep him captive.

Did you do this? How?

Why?

I told you.

I need him.

Just tell me.

Because...

...he is also my father.
