FBI (2018–…): Season 5, Episode 2 - Love Is Blind - full transcript

The team investigates a young Ivy League dropout linked to the deaths of an officer and a pawn shop owner.

- Get the hell back!
- I mean it!

I'm a cop.

Call 911.

Espresso, cappuccino,

if you're feeling really
boring, I could do a latte.

Just promise me not
to ask for oat milk.

Hey.

Hey. No time for coffee.

Always time for coffee.

- No, Jubal texted...
- Somebody shot up a pawn shop

and killed a cop in the process.

Okay. All right, let's roll.

I could drive us
down to the scene.

No. No, no. I...

You can just drop me off
at my car.

I mean, last night was fun.

You're pretty incredible,
but I just want

to keep it between us for now.

Of course.

No problem.

Two DOAs.

First one is ours,
Detective Max Villa,

choked on his own blood.

Other is Chet Roberts,
58, owner of the place.

So what are we thinking,
robbery gone bad?

Not sure.

Witnesses say he had a bag,

but it doesn't look like
anything was taken.

Description?

Male.

Slight build, brown skin,
wearing a red ski mask.

All right,
let's start canvassing

for witnesses, security cameras.

He was a good kid.

Crossed paths
with him a few times.

Always had a smile on his face.

What was he doing here?

- He worked property crimes.
- Could be he was on a case.

Both your detective and the
owner had their weapons out.

Any chance they shot
their attacker?

Negative.

Roberts got out
a couple of rounds,

but both went through
the glass doors.

Well, red ski mask guy must
have been quicker on the draw.

Or he already had his gun out.

Let's take a look
at the footage.

- I already tried.
- They're not even hooked up.

Weird, right?

All right, folks,
so we got two people dead,

one a business owner
and the other, a member

of New York's finest,
and we've been

asked to step in because...
Anyone?

Because the pawn shop is
a financial institution.

That's right.

Human beings' very first
financial institution,

which puts it squarely
in the FBI's purview.

And it is up to us
to find justice.

So with that in mind,
what do we know?

The civilian's name
is Chet Roberts.

He's the sole owner of the pawn
shop and no criminal history,

but we did the standard dive
into his financials,

and something isn't adding up.

Roberts reported only
$38,000 of income last year.

Yet he bought a $160,000
Mercedes Benz three weeks ago.

Okay, so maybe he's
doing some shady business

out of the shop.

That would explain why
the cameras weren't working.

So what do we know about this
deceased police officer, Villa?

He was on duty at the time.

Newly minted detective
over at the 88th.

Left behind a wife
and three-year-old daughter.

And forensics?

No prints or DNA,
but shell casings

indicate a .40 caliber
was used.

Rounds extracted
from our victims

show no ballistic record
on file.

And how are we doing
with the search

for our friendly neighborhood
traffic cam footage?

Anything workable,
maybe something

with a guy in a red ski mask?

Been trying, but coverage
in the area is spotty,

and camera angles
from local businesses

aren't doing us any favors.

Let's find out
why Detective Villa

was there in the first place.

Maybe that'll
give us some answers.

- Yeah, here's hoping.
- Nina and Scola are down there

talking to his lieutenant
right now.

Kid was on the job
for less than a week.

Didn't even have a partner yet.

Any idea what Detective Villa
was doing here?

He mentioned something
this morning about signing up

a new informant.

- You got a name?
- No.

Was it out of this location?

Not sure.

I've got 20 detectives,
each handling

a dozen or more cases.

Hard for me to know
their every move.

Understood.

We are going to need Villa's
file concerning this location

sent over to 26 Fed ASAP, okay?

Not a problem.

Thanks.

It looks like Detective Villa
was recruiting

the pawn shop owner, Chet
Roberts, to be an informant,

so maybe whoever they were
working on case on

realized Roberts was a CI.

It's a pretty strong
incentive for someone

- to want them both dead.
- Exactly.

So now, we just have to
figure out who that person is.

Cui malo, as the ancients say.
Who suffers?

Whoever sold the stolen goods
to the owner, right?

Any idea of who Villa
was investigating yet?

Well, there's only one
criminal history search

in the file.

And the time stamp indicates
that he pulled it

right before
he went to the pawn shop.

- Okay, I want an introduction.
- Eyes up, people.

Okay.

Logan Reid, 38,
three prior arrests

for fencing stolen goods.
No convictions.

- Uh-huh.
- You got an address on him?

Not a current one,

but we do have a registered
cell phone for him.

Checking location services
and call history now.

All right,
focus on the morning...

Time of the murder.

Can we place him at the scene?

Yes.

His cell pinged in the vicinity
of the pawn shop

within minutes of the
time of the murder.

Is the cell still active?

Yes, in Manhattan
near Madison Square Park.

Go get him before he disappears.

We're close.

He's about 200 feet away,
headed north.

I got him.

He is passing
the water fountain,

wearing a blue jacket.

On it.

Logan Reid! FBI!

Guys, we lost him.
Last seen heading south.

Got him.

- Hey!
- What the hell?

Where's the guy
you got the jacket from?

I don't know.

Dude gave me 20 bucks
and told me to put it on.

Hey, guys,
he ditched the jacket.

We lost eyes on him.

FBI.

- You got him?
- Yeah, we got him.

- .40 cal.
- South side of the park.

- Pull the car around.
- Got it.

Is that registered?

Nope.

I guess you got
some explaining to do.

City is dangerous.

A man has a right
to protect himself.

A man does, but he does not
have the right

to carry a concealed,
unregistered weapon.

Or to shoot people.

Where were you
at 7:54 this morning?

Asleep.

That is so funny, because
your phone was wide awake,

at the scene
of a double homicide.

Chet's dead?

Along with the
police officer that

he was talking to about you.

And we know that
you were fencing to Chet,

so do not lie to us.

But I didn't kill anyone.

Yeah, you're going
to have to convince us.

Well, how about this.

Drop that gun charge,
I'll tell you did it.

Uh-uh.

You tell us who did it,
and maybe we'll make

your gun charge disappear.

Well, I don't have
an exact name,

but I did see the shooter.

Ran right past me,
jumped in the car.

Check my phone.

I snapped a photo of the guy
when he drove off.

So Logan's Glock .40
is not a ballistics match

for the murder weapon,
and he did, in fact,

have a picture
of a car on his phone,

though whether
that's our shooter

or some random commuter
is a mystery yet to be solved.

Okay, car plate comes back

to a stolen Toyota
out of Brooklyn.

Police report
confirms the suspect

was wearing a red ski mask.

So Logan was telling us
the truth.

Elise, do we have a GPS lock
on that car's navigation?

Yes, running it now.

Shots fired on the 400 block
of Liberty Avenue.

We're in pursuit.

Hey, apply pressure
right here, okay?

- Help is coming.
- Let's cut him off.

He's in the alley.

Nina!

Oh, I'm fine.

What, are you crazy?
I said I'm fine.

Let's go.

- This is Agent Scola.
- Suspect is in flight.

We need containment now.

All right,
so things are heating up.

Our murder suspect
just hit another pawn shop,

opened fire in a crowded street,

and put a civilian
in the hospital.

So where are we on containment?
Do we have a perimeter yet?

Not yet; Multiple units
stuck in traffic.

- What about street cams?
- Can we track his movements?

Yep, yep, just got a hit
on 91st.

Voila, the mask is off.

Is it enough for facial rec?

- Not from this angle.
- Elise?

- Got him.
- ATM across the street.

Okay.

Tell me who he is.

- On it.
- Running facial right now.

Got a hit.

Devjeet Kamra. 19.

There's no rap sheet.

Checking his social media posts.

Valedictorian.

Won some sort of prize
for robotics his senior year.

Full ride to Columbia.

Those don't grow on trees.

Yeah, but that's where
the good times end.

School records show
he dropped out last semester.

Last address on file
was for his parents' house

in Richmond Hill.

From valedictorian
to robbing pawnshops,

that's a long way down.

Okay, send OA and Tiff
over to his family.

See if they know where he is.

Dev hasn't lived here
in six months.

We are completely estranged.

You don't really think
he killed those people?

I'm afraid we do.

Dev was a good boy, a smart boy.

He was going to be
an engineer or maybe a doctor,

like Harita.

But then it was that girl.

She ruined him.

What girl?

Dev was dating
someone unsuitable.

As in...

Not Sikh.

He cut his hair because of her.

Was it?

That was his choice, not hers.

When was the last time
you spoke with Dev?

This morning.

He called out of nowhere
to ask for a loan.

$40,000.

Can you believe it? I hung up.

Okay, did he mention
what he needed the money for?

No, I didn't care.

And the cell phone number
that he contacted you from?

It was blocked.

All I can say is,
thank God we have Harita.

- I can't.
- I... I need some air.

Did Dev have any other friends

that may have been
in contact with him?

Hey.

My brother is not a bad guy.

I swear.

Harita, a cop is dead.

So we need to find
your brother ASAP

because if the NYPD
finds him first...

If you want him to come out
of this in one piece,

then help us.

Dev rents an apartment
in Cypress Hills.

Clear.

What have we got?

Got some cash, jewelry,
ammo for the Glock.

Well, that's definitely our guy.

Listen, I just wanted
to check in about

what happened back in the alley.

Where you almost got
your head shot off?

- No, Nina, I was just...
- Yeah, I said I was fine.

I just wanted to make sure
that you were okay.

Well, it was dangerous
and irrational of you.

Come look at this.

This must be our unsuitable.

My parents didn't give a damn
who I dated in high school.

Well, that must be nice.

My dad once chased
one of my boyfriends

off the front porch at gunpoint.

Little excessive.

Yeah, that's just East Texas.

Hey, what high school
did Dev go to?

Maspeth. Why?

This says "property of ABHS."

Well, let's take a look.

Skyler Smith.

12th grade.

Might be our mystery girlfriend.

Yep. I'll call it in.

There's a good chance
she knows where Romeo is.

What do you mean
Skyler isn't in school?

Well, her principal
marked her absent today

and none of her friends
have seen her.

Oh, God.

Is she in trouble or in danger?

We're not sure.

We were hoping
you could help us out.

Her boyfriend, Devjeet Kamra,
how well do you know him?

Sorry, who?

Her boyfriend.

Okay, do you know
where your daughter is,

or whether we could contact her,

maybe a cell phone number?

I already tried calling her
a few hours ago.

It's shut off.

I assumed it was
because she was in class.

Does she have a car?

No, but she took my Camry today.

Said she was
running some errands

before she went to school.
It's blue.

Does it have a GPS?

- You mean like navigation?
- Yes. Why?

Broken glass.

Something's off.

It's empty.

What kind of teenager
leaves behind

her purse and cell phone?

Hey, Nina, take a look at this.

Hey, lab confirms
blood on the window

is a match to Skyler Smith,
which could mean

a lot of things.
None of them are good.

Most importantly,
was her boyfriend,

our prime suspect, involved?

Does the store have
coverage on that lot?

Yes, and lucky for us,
new installs only last week.

- I think I got it.
- Yeah?

Okay.

So she was taken.

By who? Who are these guys?

One of them looks pretty slim.

- Could that be Dev?
- Uh, let's see.

The Toyota Camry
is 70 inches wide,

so no, both abductors
are under 5'8".

All right, let's reach out
to Skyler's mom.

See if she's been contacted.

When did this happen again?

- 7:02 AM.
- Hold up.

Dev's parents said that
he reached out to them

this morning asking for a loan.

Yeah, $40,000.

You know what, that sounds
like ransom to me.

- Hey, check it out.
- I found their getaway vehicle.

Looks like the two masked
suspects throw Skyler in

- and take off in a Hyundai SUV.
- Can you get a license plate?

Yeah, it's registered
to a Tito Martinez.

Okay.

Well, looks like old Tito
is a bona fide member

of Las Espadas.

Two priors, both drug related.

Let's find Tito.

See if we can't
connect these dots.

Tito Martinez, FBI.

All right, you're under arrest.

How's the hand?

It's fine.

I'm gonna ask you one more
time, Tito, where is she?

- What, are you deaf?
- I never seen her.

No, I hear good,
and I see good too.

Where did you get
that little shiner?

Playing basketball.

I caught an elbow.

Oh, a right cross
from a girl named Skyler?

It was basketball.

I'm positive.

You want to know
what I'm positive about?

That you're lying.

EIT checked under your nails
when we booked you.

Found skin cells
and dried blood.

You want to guess
whose that was?

That's kidnapping.

Carries up to a life sentence.

No one gets life.

For kidnapping?

With your résumé,
you are looking at life.

Do you understand?

Unless you decide to tell us
what the hell is going on.

Is Skyler still alive?

Yeah, the last time
I saw her anyway.

So you kidnapped her.

I helped throw her in the car,

but I don't know
where Ramon took her.

Ramon who?

Cortez.

He's my boss.

We did it together.

- Run that name.
- See if DEA has anything.

Yeah.

And you took her, why exactly?

To make sure her boyfriend
paid the debt that he owes.

So Dev was a customer.

No, he's a drug runner.

Dev said that
his parents cut him off,

and he needed to make money,
so Ramon gave him a shot.

Why would Ramon
use someone like Dev?

Nerds never get checked by cops.

Trouble is,
they got no street smarts.

Well, not where it counts.

So he messed up.

Yeah.

The idiot thought
the cops were following him,

so he freaked out.

He dumped the dope
down the sewer.

40,000 bucks' worth.

Then Ramon told them he had
24 hours to pay back the money.

Or what?

You want to help
with your sentence?

You tell us everything.

Or he'll kill Dev's girl.

All right, so there's the
motivation for the robberies.

The kid is in love.

For Ramon Cortez.

She was definitely here.

We got a body.

- It's still warm.
- This is recent.

All right, who's our DOA?

Ramon Cortez.

He's Tito's boss.

Okay, we got some powder burns.

This was close and personal.

This operation could run
over a dozen kilos a day.

There's no way they'd
move that type of product

without some sort of security.

Let's see.

Ha.

Look at that.

- Is that Dev?
- Yeah.

- Whoa.
- Looks like Dev got hit.

Right in the gut.

Then the kid killed a gang boss.

There's Skyler.

He bluffed his way in here
with a bag full of paper

to save his girl.

Now they're on the run.

From the gang and from us.

Things you do for love.

Here's what went down.

Instead of paying off the
drug debt for his girlfriend,

our suspect took a page
from Billy the Kid

and came in guns blazing,
which makes Ramon Cortez

the third person
he's killed today.

And as for Skyler,
until we know more,

we need to treat this
as a second abduction.

I get it, but they're
obviously in love.

I think she's a willing
participant, you know?

You might be right,
but for now, she's a victim,

so act accordingly.

Now, NYPD is flooding the zone,

but this kid, Dev, is clever.

He's slipped through
our hands once.

Now he's wounded,
maybe even more dangerous.

Either way,
we have to find them fast.

Kelly, pull up a list
of nearby doctors and clinics

open within a 10-block radius.

Okay, I got three...

Jamaican Med Center, Lefferts,
and an urgent care on 133rd.

All right, get units
over to each one.

I will update Skyler's mom.

What about the Kamra residence?

How far away is that?

Checking.

Six blocks.

Well, you really think
he'd visit his parents

- at a time like this?
- No, but he probably would

visit his sister...
She's a doctor.

Hey, Harita Kamra
just placed a 911 call

from her parents' address.

Reached an operator before
the line disconnected.

That's the spot. Go, go, go!

- Door's opening.
- I got movement.

Please, it's just us!

Hands where we can see them.

Head towards us.

They're gone.

- It's all right.
- Put your hands down.

You're safe.
Just take a breath, okay?

Just breathe. You're all right.

You're okay.

Is that his blood?

Yes.

Dev's in bad shape, okay?

I tried to slow the bleeding,
stitched him up,

but I couldn't stop it.

And I tried to call 911,
but Skyler smashed my phone.

The house is clear.

Okay. Think really hard.

Did he tell you
where he was going?

No, but they stole
our car and my wallet.

- I'll call it in.
- Yeah. Okay.

- Let us know if you hear back.
- Please be careful.

- This isn't his fault.
- Agent Wallace.

I'm sorry, Harita, I have to go.

I helped you. Please.

He's my brother.

All right, plate number
is Yankee Golf Tango 3-4-2-9.

- Run it.
- 3-4-2-9.

Maroon. 2012. Ford Taurus.
It's base model.

Okay, so there's no GPS.

Put out the BOLO...
TSA, Port Authority,

all area hospitals.
Let's circulate the photos.

And check plate readers,
tunnels, ferries, bridges.

Just got a hit
on his dad's credit card.

Gas station on Linden Boulevard.

All right, looks like
OA and Tiffany are nearby.

Tell them to intercept
and get SWAT

headed in that direction.

We need to end this before
somebody else gets hurt.

Skyler, freeze!

Let her go!

Dev, drop the weapon!

Baby, get inside.

Put the gun down!

Now.

Drop it now!

Let's get inside.

Skyler, you don't
have to do this!

Get back!

I said stay back!

Tiff, call it in.

We have eyes
on our two suspects.

Shots fired.
Requesting backup immediately.

They've taken a hostage.

I repeat,
they have taken a hostage.

So much for Skyler
being a victim.

Just liaised with MXU.

We've got a live feed
into the garage.

And there's a land line
in that front office.

All right, ready when you are.

Okay, Isobel,
we're all set here.

Where are we
with crisis negotiation?

Running behind. Stand by.

Jubal is speaking with the
surgeon from Bellevue now.

Thank you very much, Doctor.

So if Harita's description
of the wound is correct

and the stitches have opened,
then Dev has an hour, tops.

While he's alive, we have
leverage, but if he dies...

Then Skyler will start spinning,

and all bets are off.

OA, I need you to take point
and open a channel now.

We are running out of time.

Copy that.

Hello.

Skyler, I am Special Agent
Zidan with the FBI.

You need to let us help you.

I don't know what to do.

There's so much blood.

Okay, we have paramedics
on standby.

And if you surrender,
we're going to let you go

to the hospital with Dev
and wait with him

until you know that he is okay.

Then what happens?

When he's better, what happens?

He's going to
have to face trial.

- No!
- He is not going to prison.

He saved me from Ramon.
I have to save him.

I saw the paramedics.
Send her in.

He needs a hospital, Skyler.

I am not going to
ask again, you hear me?

Hey, let me go in.

Tell her I'm the paramedic.

No. Absolutely not.

I can do this, okay?

I can talk her down
woman to woman.

If we send a paramedic in,

will you let the others go?

Yeah.

One. But not all.

I need to make sure
you don't hurt us.

- OA, let me go in.
- I'll do it.

Are you going to fit
in her uniform?

What are the odds
that she actually

clocked the paramedic?

She's expecting a female, okay?

Nina is going to go in, not you.

When you get in there, try and
get her as close as you can

to the front office windows.

Our snipers will have
a shot if need be.

Got it.

All righty, Skyler.

We're going to do this your way.

She's coming in.

Hurry.

Okay, here's the score.

Our suspect has moved
to the back of the garage

and acquired more hostages...
Four in total.

One pregnant woman
and three employees.

A frontal assault is going
to be our last resort.

Too much exposure
and too many hazards.

Where are our snipers?

They're deploying now,
but field of fire

is limited to the
front office only.

Understood.

Sierra 1, report.

In position.

- Thanks.
- Yeah.

It's okay. I'm unarmed.

I'm a paramedic.

I'm here to help.

My name is Nina Chase.

Back here.

- Come on.
- Okay.

Okay, what about the hostages?

She can go.

The others stay.

Skyler, come on.

Let them all go, okay?

It's what's best for you,
for them, for everyone.

No. Not for me.

Not for us.

You, you can go.

- Come on.
- Get out of here.

Show me your bag.

Okay.

It's just a standard kit.

Just open it.

Okay.

Other.

Okay, hurry.

- Hey there.
- You.

You have to help me.

Okay, I'm going to.

It hurts. It hurts.

- I know. I know.
- Hey. Hey, look at me.

I need you to breathe, okay?

Just stop talking for a minute.

I need you to keep breathing.
Focus on that.

Okay, I'm going to have to apply

some pressure to it, okay?

Get it to stop bleeding.

I love you, babe.

I know.

I know.

You're going to be okay.

And we're going to get out
of this mess,

and we're going to go live
in Mexico on a beach.

You're going to be okay.

Hey, the light here
is really bad,

and I need to move him
somewhere else.

No.

No, do it here.

Okay.

Just trying to help.

She's jumpy.

Talk her down.

Come on, Nina.

Skyler.

Hey, listen,

this is really bad.

So fix him.

- I... I can't.
- More stitches.

He's bleeding internally,
and he needs surgery.

If you keep him here,
he's going to die.

Is that really what you want?

No, but we're not going to jail.

I get it. I get it.

He's your whole world.

But you can walk away from this.

Okay?
You haven't killed anybody.

You have your whole life
ahead of you.

All you have to do
is just put down the gun.

I can't.

We need to be...
We have to be together.

- Yes, you can.
- Listen to me.

- Shut up!
- Just shut up!

God, you don't get it.
Don't you get it?

- If he dies, I kill them.
- All right.

- I'll kill you!
- Right... hey, okay!

- She's spiraling.
- We have to breach.

No. No.

It's too risky.
Nina can do it.

- There's not time.
- Look at Dev.

Okay, I hear you.

I'll see what I can do.

Hurry.

Hey. Hey, hey, hey. Hey.

Hey.

- Is he dead?
- No. No.

Hey, look at me. He's not dead.

Calm down, but I need
your help, okay?

He needs fluids. Water.

- Okay?
- Water?

Water. Okay?

I need you to go
get some for me.

In the office, there's a cooler.

I need you to bring him
some water.

Okay.

Baby, I'll be right back, okay?

Where?

- Right in...
- Right in there to your right.

She's gone.

You did everything he could.

I know.

It still feels like I failed.

Nina, don't.

They did this.

They made the choices
that got them here.

You did everything you could.

Skyler.

No.

Dev's out of surgery.

Looks like he's
going to make it.

That's great.

Hey.

I'm sorry.

It was really tough today...

Watching those kids
throw their lives away.

It's like you said,
they just kept doubling down

and making bad decision
after bad decision.

Love will do that.

Yeah, hell of a day.

It sure started out fun, though.

Yeah. Mm-hmm.
