Expedition Unknown: Hunt for ExtraTerrestrials (2017): Season 1, Episode 4 - Roswell Revealed - full transcript
Josh's epic search for extraterrestrial life comes to a close in the USA, where a legendary investigation team brings him to a hot case in Arkansas. Then, he visits with a researcher who may have new information on the mother of all UFOs.
The top of the hill just glowed.
Tonight, the final chapter
in my hunt for
extraterrestrials.
Watch out!
Our experiment to
collect particles
from the edge of space
returns to Earth...
There it is right there!
...and we may have brought back
a galactic hitchhiker.
What is that?
This thing probably has never
been seen in the history
of man before.
After spanning the globe,
I return to the U.S. to
investigate a sighting
that has locals
running for the hills.
Oh! Right there!
A big light.
And I'll go west
to take on the most infamous
UFO case in history.
Welcome to
Roswell Army Air Field.
This is where
the conspiracy started.
The memo tells us
there's been alien visitation.
- It's a smoking gun.
- Absolutely.
Then, my evidence from around
the world is put to the test.
So, what is it?
What will the final verdict be?
Up here.
Get out of here!
- Did you see that?
- What?!
My name is Josh Gates.
I've traveled to more than
a hundred countries,
exploring age-old legends.
- Oh, wow.
- Look at this!
And now I'm tackling
mankind's greatest question...
Are we alone in the universe?
Join me on a global quest
for answers...
Away! There she goes.
...and an investigation
that is out of this world.
Oh! Right there!
Hunt For Extraterrestrials."
Are we alone in the universe?
It's something
we've all wondered.
Dreaming of life
on other planets
is an experience that
all of humanity shares.
Just by sheer number,
there has to be life out there.
The search for
extraterrestrial life
is advancing
by leaps and bounds,
all while mysterious
sightings of UFOs
are being reported
across the globe.
In my quest to find out
how close we are
to proving the existence
of alien life,
I've traveled to
four continents.
And now, in a field outside
of Sheffield, England,
I've joined forces with
Professor Milton Wainwright,
who's testing a bold theory
that alien life
might already be floating
just above planet Earth.
What we're looking for is
evidence towards the theory
that life came from space.
So if it came in then,
it should be coming in now.
Milton and his team
are launching a large balloon
to the edge of the atmosphere.
Away! There she goes.
The experiment
is straightforward.
Wainwright's balloon will
attempt to capture
organic particles from
the edge of the atmosphere.
No organic material from Earth
could get blown this high up,
so if any particles
are lurking there,
it must have
fallen in from space.
And if even one such
extraterrestrial particle
can be confirmed, it means
that life exists beyond Earth.
We need to chase
this thing down,
so all systems go. Let's go.
Back to the car.
Okay, let's do it. Come on.
Let's go find this thing.
We use GPS trackers to
follow the balloon's path.
Look at that!
I mean, it looks like
it's almost in space.
So, it says "Door opened,"
and it's collecting
particles, hopefully.
- It is.
- Go, science.
With the samples collected,
the balloon bursts,
and the experiment falls
back to Earth for recovery.
Now we're on a race
to find the box
and get it to the lab
as soon as possible.
This is just about to land
ahead of us, I think.
Touchdown. Punch it, Chewie.
There it is!
There it is right there!
- Let's see what we got.
- Here we go.
- In one piece.
- Looks pretty in one piece.
Hard to believe that this thing
was, a few minutes ago,
100,000 feet up.
That's right.
Still feels quite cold to me.
It does.
Feels like a freezer box.
We keep this closed?
Yes, we make sure the samples
are well-protected.
We're gonna get back
in our chase-down vehicles
and then meet back up
with Professor Wainwright
and get these
analyzed in the lab.
All right.
To the edge of space and back.
Okay. Let's do it, guys.
Come on.
We quickly haul the box
into the truck and steer toward
Professor Wainwright's lab at
the University of Sheffield.
Inside the high-tech facility,
the box is taken away
to be prepped
while we have to scrub
down our gear
and ourselves for a trip
inside a clean room.
Any particles that we bring in
from the outside
can contaminate the samples,
so we wipe down the equipment
and wrap ourselves
in sterile gowns and gloves.
I'm a lunch lady.
Wow. Look at this.
This is clean.
- This is the clean room, yeah.
Once we're allowed
to set foot in the lab,
we sit down in front
of Professor Wainwright's
scanning electron microscope,
which can image objects
smaller than 1/100
the diameter of a human hair.
All right, these are the stubs
that we exposed
in the stratosphere.
Okay.
The microscope takes
a few minutes to work.
Based on how we're dressed,
I feel like we're
waiting for a baby.
That's right. There's a real
waiting-room vibe
here at the hospital.
Professor Wainwright has
only conducted
a handful of tests like this
and has received promising
results on each occasion.
We're hoping to get
a significant result today,
since this is the first
time this experiment
is being documented on camera.
It's a bit like waiting
for images from the moon.
Exactly.
The team moves the camera
on the electron microscope
around the edge of the
sample tray we sent to space,
looking for any particles
that might have become attached.
Finally, the microscope
gets a hit.
Oh. What's that? You see that?
That little guy.
Yeah, we do have definitely...
Definitely an instance.
Yeah. Okay. We've hit
something. What is it?
We don't know what it is
until we get closer and closer.
It's getting a kind of
biological shape about it.
Wow. This is
looking interesting.
Yes.
You can see I'm getting
excited here, right?
So, what is that?
Remember, this thing has
probably never been seen
in the history of man before.
I think we're allowed
to get excited.
Yes, absolutely.
If that does prove out to be
something that's organic,
not terrestrial,
you're talking about...
Life from space.
What is that?
That's amazing.
- Look at that.
- What is that?
That certainly looks
biological, I think, yeah.
It's about 20 microns in size.
Is that small enough that
it could've been sent up
from the planet surface?
No, this is four
or five times too big.
This did not come from Earth.
If it's biological and it's not
from the planet's surface,
then that's...
That's extra terrestrial?
Well, what else can it be?
Um...
Wait. Did we just find
an extraterrestrial?
Is that what you're saying?
Well, if it isn't, I don't know
the answer to what it is.
I might be looking at
extraterrestrial life here.
That's crazy.
That's completely insane.
I feel like running to a phone
booth to call the news wires,
but before that happens,
the find needs to be verified.
If this turns out to be
what it looks like...
Yeah.
...this changes everything.
It's a paradigm shift, okay?
Yeah.
It means that there's life
in the cosmos.
We're not alone.
Dr. Wainwright's tests
are making headlines
around the world.
Skeptics are convinced
that the particles,
like the one we found,
must be from Earth.
Others are applauding his work
and rushing to repeat
and verify the results.
Time will tell.
But Professor Wainwright
seems certain
that the particle
we're staring at
is from a galaxy far, far away.
While the scientific community
continues to study
Dr. Wainwright's findings,
I'm not gonna
stop investigating.
Back in the States,
I'm turning my attention
to the single most famous
UFO case in human history...
The 70th anniversary
of Roswell...
Where I hope to use
new technology
to make a break
in the infamous cold case.
But with a few days before
the festivities kick off,
I'm making a pit stop
to investigate a UFO sighting
that happened yesterday.
Literally.
I arrive to meet a renowned
UFO investigator
at the State Line Bar
on the border Arkansas
shares with Oklahoma.
And when I saw on the border,
I mean on the border.
How you doing?
Fine. How are you today?
I'm great, thanks.
What can I get you?
Well, I'm driving.
You got a root beer back there?
Yeah. I'll take it.
I sit and drink my root beer
in Oklahoma
until Chase Kloetzke
walks in from Arkansas.
- Josh?
- Hey.
I'm in Oklahoma. Come on over.
Chase is the Director
of the Special Assignment Team
for the oldest and largest
UFO investigation network
in the world, MUFON.
First of all,
what does MUFON stand for?
MUFON stands for
the Mutual UFO Network.
And what separates MUFON
from other reporting centers
is that we have investigators.
'We have over 4,000 members
and investigators
all over the world ready to
put boots on the ground.
And what's your
specific background?
I'm a biomechanics engineer
for the Department of Defense.
I'm actually a master
trainer/master instructor.
Wow. So you have a really legit
background coming into this.
So, what are we doing here?
What's brought you...
And me now...
To the Oklahoma-Arkansas border?
A really great case
has just come in.
It's a couple that had
a very strange event
happen on their property.
It's not far from here.
Has anyone been out there
to check it out?
We're gonna be the first.
Well, let's get out there.
I'm ready.
Let's go. After you.
We leave Oklahoma and climb back
into the Jeep in Arkansas.
Josh, before we leave,
we have to get you
an official MUFON uniform.
Yes! Love this.
This is amazing.
Mulder and Scully, let's go.
The truth is out there.
Here we go!
Our destination is two hours
into the mountains,
where a family claims
to have seen dramatic lights
hovering in the sky.
We finally arrive at
the Board Camp Crystal Mine
to meet the Murphy family...
How you doing? I'm Josh.
...Orville, Cheryl,
and their son, Josh,
who walk us down to the
location of their sighting.
This is it. - This is it.
We were standing right here.
We were watching out
this area here,
and we were seeing
little glows of light.
Then, the top of the hill
just glowed.
I mean, the brightest
glow you ever seen.
And just a couple
of seconds later,
we saw three beams of light...
Two together, one off
to the side...
But they were flat
right across the top.
They went up, just quit.
And all three of you saw this?
Yes, absolutely.
Our first impression was,
"It looks like a spotlight."
But how can a spotlight be
out in the middle of the woods
when there's virtually
nothing behind it?
There's really no homes,
no driveways, no roads.
Okay.
We would love answers.
Yes.
The lights have been seen
on several different occasions,
all around the same
time of night.
So when the sun sets,
Chase and I hike to the scene
to try to see
the evidence ourselves.
Okay.
So, the site's back this way.
We have a totally
unobstructed view.
By the way, it's about
the same time as it was
when they had their experience.
- About that time?
- It's about that time.
Okay. Let's go dark here.
Okay.
Okay.
And see what we see.
Ooh, ooh, ooh.
I just saw something.
I'm headed to investigate
the mother of all UFO mysteries
with top-secret access
at Roswell.
But first, I stopped off
in the Ozark Mountains,
where a local family has
repeatedly seen bright lights
in the skies behind
their property.
Now researcher Chase Kloetzke,
with the renowned
UFO investigation group MUFON,
has brought me out
to the site in the hopes
that whatever happened
to the family
will happen to us.
Ooh.
I just saw something.
Ooh, ooh, ooh. Right there.
What is that?
There. See it?
That little sparkle?
- Yes.
- Firefly?
I believe that is a firefly.
I mean, those are quick
flashes of light.
Any chance that's
what they're seeing?
I don't think so.
They must see these
all the time.
Right.
And what they're describing
is significantly bigger,
and the light seemed
to last for longer, right?
Absolutely.
We leave the fireflies
alone and decide
to survey the edges of the area
where the sighting occurred.
Is it common to get a report
like these folks are saying
that not only do they see lights
but that they're seeing them
night after night after night?
Historically, this area
has hundreds of UFO reports.
So there's actually accounts
in this area that go back?
Absolutely.
Josh, what is that?
What is what?
It was just... You see where
the big bunch of trees...
Oh! Right there!
Yes, yes.
Wait. What the... is that?
A big light... Yes.
...cruised right through here.
Guys, can we get
a camera over here?
So, right in here.
Left to right, right in there.
You see it?
See it? See it?
Guys, guys, guys, right here.
- Got it? You got it?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's gone.
It's gone.
But there was, like,
a good light there.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
That's crazy.
I don't know what that was.
Chase, what was that?
I can tell you what it wasn't.
It was not a firefly.
It was, like, a big...
It was so different,
it caught my eye. Right.
It was like a ball of light.
Yeah.
Almost was exactly
what they reported seeing.
Right.
We probably should do
a little more canvassing.
See if it shows up again.
Yeah.
Eyes to the sky, everybody.
Keep looking up.
We investigate
for the rest of the night.
Whatever caught our eye
doesn't show itself again.
Two questions linger...
Did we actually get a glimpse
of what the Murphys
saw last night,
and if so, what is it?
It's like trying to
put together a puzzle
but you don't actually know
what the shape of the puzzle's
meant to be.
That's the fun part for us
is getting out here,
because one day,
we're hoping to see
what that picture looks like.
Right.
See what it all really means.
Yeah.
As the sun comes back up,
Chase has a working file
on the Murphys' sighting
to bring back to MUFON, and we
have our video to analyze,
to see if this case
can be put to rest
or whether the flying objects
seen here remain unidentified.
And speaking of unidentified,
I'm heading west,
where I'm planning on using
new technology and techniques
to shed light on the most
infamous UFO case in history.
In the first week of July 1947,
a craft of unknown origin
wrecks on a ranch outside
of Roswell, New Mexico.
Officials from the Air Force
step in and seal off the site,
first claiming
there's a downed saucer
and then, suddenly,
just a weather balloon.
And now, exactly 70 years
later to the day,
people are still
fiercely debating
what really happened here.
Also, they're throwing
one hell of a party.
It is impossible to do
an investigation
about extraterrestrials
and not come to
Roswell, New Mexico.
After all, this is
the most famous,
the most iconic close-encounter
story in the world.
And to the people here in town,
well, it's not just seen
as an historic
intergalactic event,
it's kind of a way of life.
Welcome, Earthlings,
to the city of Roswell.
The streets are packed with
tens of thousands of people,
and everywhere you look,
there's something to see.
Or something you wish
you'd never seen.
Insanity.
There are museums
dedicated to the crash,
gift shops dedicated to
making money off the crash...
...and famous speakers.
This is Mr. Travis Walton,
the world's most famous
alien abduction story.
"Fire in the Sky" right there.
It's tough to cool down
in the scorching desert sun.
I mean, it is hot out.
Am I right?
I know. Boiling.
Then, I see it... the perfect
way to beat the heat.
Whoa!
And stage my very own
Roswell crash.
I'm alive!
Once the sun goes down,
the whole town comes out
for the annual
Roswell UFO parade.
The grand marshal this year...
A very special and humble guest.
How are you?!
Well, not too humble.
A guy could get used to this.
Hiya!
The next morning,
the celebration is over,
and I dive headfirst
into the latest information
on the Roswell crash.
70 years of conspiracy theories
have muddied the story,
but thankfully, there are
modern researchers
taking a level-headed
approach to the investigation.
To help me break new ground
on the Roswell case,
I'm on my way to meet
a renowned journalist
at a very exclusive location.
Welcome to Roswell
Army Air Field.
My hunt for extraterrestrials
has finally arrived
in Roswell, New Mexico,
where I'm about to get
an audience with the Pope...
Nick Pope, that is.
He's a renowned journalist
and Roswell researcher
who's also investigated
UFO reports
for the British government.
He's arranged
very exclusive access
to a local aircraft hangar.
Nick. Great to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too.
And welcome to
Roswell Army Air Field,
as it was back in 1947.
This base was home
to the 509th Bomb Group,
the only atomic-bomb-capable
squadron in the world.
And this place is really central
to the Roswell
incident story, right?
After the debris was recovered,
this is where they took it.
So, whatever crashed out there
in the desert, it went here.
Yes. And for those people that
believe there were alien bodies,
as well as just the wreckage,
they were stored in there, too.
Awesome.
While the facility
is long decommissioned
and closed to the public,
Nick has secured permission
to step inside.
Okay. So, take me back
in time a bit.
So, what is meant
to have happened here
that put Roswell on the map?
Well, in 1947, the military
put out a press release,
and they said, "We have
recovered a flying disk."
This then made headlines
all around the world.
So this is
the Roswell Daily Record,
July 8, 1947.
"RAAF Captures Flying Saucer
on Ranch in Roswell Region."
So, what happens after this?
Well, what happens is that,
within 24 hours,
the military go from saying,
"We've recovered one
of these flying disks,"
to saying, "No, everyone
has made a mistake.
It was just a weather balloon."
Right.
And we see this story
in the next day's paper,
and the general effectively
debunks the flying-disk story.
And the high-ranking official,
who's Brigadier General
Roger Ramey,
he's saying now,
"It's just a weather balloon."
Yes.
People who believe
in conspiracies say
that's when
the conspiracy started.
That's day one of the government
covering this up.
The wreckage disappeared,
and most of the documents
were classified or went missing.
But this hangar,
the one-time home
of a supposed
alien craft, remains.
And there's one door in the
building that has been closed
for a very, very long time.
Well, out here, in the main
body of the hangar,
that's where
the debris was kept,
but those people who say
there were bodies, as well,
believe that they
were kept in here.
This was the room?
This was the room.
This is literally, like,
the alien-autopsy room.
Absolutely.
Cadavers out and an autopsy
conducted on them.
How many people
have been in here?
Only a handful of people
outside this base
have ever looked into this room.
Really? Yeah.
Okay. Well, let's bust it open.
Actually, I'm not kidding.
I don't like locked
doors, and so,
after nearly
three hours of meeting
with the hangar's current owners
and maintenance staff,
they agree to help us
get to the heart
of the Roswell mystery.
Okay.
Here we go.
No, uh... No alien bodies.
Sadly not.
But if these walls
could talk, right?
Oh, they'd have a heck
of a story.
If some people are
to be believed,
this is where we really
found out, or rather,
the U.S. government found out,
that we're not alone
in the universe.
Do you think that
something extraterrestrial
came to this room?
I'm undecided.
I haven't yet seen enough
evidence to make me say,
"Yes, it was definitely aliens."
So what will it take to finally
make a call on Roswell?
Well, this is like a cold case,
like an unsolved
murder or something,
and sometimes some
new piece of evidence
does come forward,
and as it happens,
there is some new
piece of evidence
that might help blow open
the whole mystery and solve it.
In the Roswell hangar
where conspiracy theorists
believe an alien craft
was stored 70 years ago,
journalist Nick Pope
is explaining to me
that there may still be
some new ground to cover
on this infamous case.
There is some new
piece of evidence
that might help blow open
the whole mystery
and solve it.
Okay.
If you look at
one of the iconic photos
taken after the incident,
you see the general,
Roger Ramey,
and in his hand is a document.
This is perhaps the most
famous photo in UFO history.
General Ramey stooped over
a crushed weather balloon.
Roswell supporters claim
this photo op
was designed to cover up
the actual crash.
They believe Ramey's orders are
in plain sight in his left hand.
General Ramey is the senior
military officer
involved with this.
So the document that
he's holding
almost certainly pertains
to the Roswell incident itself.
Now, that photo is the only
evidence of this document.
The original seems to have
been lost, disappeared.
We don't know.
If we can read that document,
we might be able to solve
the whole mystery.
Right. Now, as it happens,
there is an excellent researcher
doing some work on this...
Kevin Randall.
He has access to the original
negative of that picture,
which is in an archive
in Arlington, Texas.
He'd be a great person
for you to go and see,
because if you can read
that document,
it really could be a way
of solving the whole mystery,
one way or the other.
Incredible.
To view the Ramey photo, Nick
sends me to Arlington, Texas,
and the University of Texas
Special Collections division.
Waiting for me there
is his colleague,
researcher Kevin Randall.
So, let's start with this.
Why is the Ramey memo
so important to so many people?
Because the Ramey memo is
the single most important
piece of documentation we have
related to the Roswell case.
Ramey's holding the thing
in his hand.
Right.
If it can be properly read
and it says what some
people believe it says,
it proves that there
was alien visitation.
To the believers,
it's a smoking gun.
Absolutely.
Countless researchers have tried
to enhance the photo,
and like everything
about Roswell,
the results have been
a matter of fevered debate.
There's consensus on only
a few words in the memo.
Most believes claim
to see the phrase
"victims of the wreck,"
which they believe is proof
that alien occupants
were recovered
by the military in 1947.
And what makes this
analysis today different?
So, we're starting with
the original negative.
It's being scanned
specifically for the purpose
of attempting to read
what the memo says.
Okay.
We enter the library, and
waiting for us in a cool room
are librarian Brenda McClurkin
and our forensic
photo analyst Mike Primeau.
Nice to meet you. Pleasure.
These very famous
Ramey-memo photos are here.
Yes. Yes, they're here,
in the cold vault.
I'm excited to see the original.
Let's do it. Okay.
I'm ready.
The vault is meticulously
kept at 38 degrees
to prevent the film inside
from developing mold,
curling, or decay.
The Ramey photo is one of
the most valuable here
and is rarely handled.
This is the photo
that has sparked
more than a half a century
of debate.
And that is the
original negative.
Yes, it is.
Wow. That's incredible.
And the memo, we see,
is in his hand there, yes?
Yes, uh-huh.
Mike, let's talk about
what happens from here.
What is generally the process
of getting into
the analysis of this photo,
from the negative stage?
This negative would need to be
scanned into a digital format,
put on a computer
with the appropriate software,
and then we take a look at it.
Got it.
Mike scans the negative
and begins the laborious process
of forensically
analyzing the photo.
Every pixel is scrutinized.
This is the first time
an impartial,
court-certified expert
has done this kind of
a examination on the Ramey memo.
And after hours of work,
he's ready to show the results.
Using forensic
enhancement techniques,
here we've got multiple
coloring filters,
we apply some sharpening.
Okay.
So, as we adjust these
and change the filters...
the color balance has revealed
more to the human eye.
Right. Now, to be clear,
you're looking at this
with fresh eyes.
Yes.
You don't have a dog
in this fight.
Exactly.
With your fresh eyes
and experience,
what do you see?
Out of the first visible line
of text, we can't see anything.
Nothing.
We can't ready anything. No.
In the second line,
I was confidently able
to identify
"...and the viewing of the..."
the letter "G"
"...connected to the..."
And does that line up
with what other people
have seen in that line?
Absolutely not.
It doesn't?
At the University of Texas,
Special Collections division,
forensic expert Mike Primeau's
analysis of Roswell's infamous
Ramey memo has just uncovered
a major new discovery.
"...and the viewing of the..."
the letter "G"
"...connected to the..."
And does that line up
with what other people
have seen in that line?
Absolutely not.
It doesn't?
No.
What a lot of people
have seen in the line
is "The victims of the wreck."
"The victims of the wreck."
"Victims of the wreck."
And you're seeing
the word "viewing."
That's correct.
"Viewing" changes
the whole meaning
of what's going on there.
"Victims" implies a crew.
"Viewing" suggests
you're looking at something.
How confident are you
that that word is "viewing?"
I think it says "viewing,"
and that's something I would be
100% confident in
in saying in a court of law.
Okay.
That... I mean, that,
in some way,
kicks a pretty major leg
out from the chair
on this as a smoking gun.
As a smoking gun, yes. Okay.
And then, from the next line,
what do we see?
"...at Fort Worth..."
"...in the 'rise'"
or "disc."
Well, now, hold on.
That's a biggie.
So, it might say "rise"
or it might say "disc."
That's what I'm able
to glean from it.
Right.
And this, I assume, is another
major component of the case
for this being UFO-related.
And in the UFO community,
the consensus is that
"disc" is what the word is,
and that brings it into the
context of an alien spacecraft.
Mike continues
to take us line by line
through the words
he's been able to decipher.
None appear to directly refer to
flying saucers or alien bodies
or a cover-up.
So how significant is it
to have this kind of analysis?
It's extremely important.
If it doesn't say
"victims of the wreck"
and it doesn't say "disc,"
then we've moved a great
distance from the idea
that this is a smoking gun,
proving that Roswell
was an alien spacecraft.
Sure.
I guess one fair thing
that a Roswell proponent
could say is that we still
can't read 80% of the memo.
You could say that.
So, the question is,
do you think we'll ever be able
to read the rest of it?
I believe that, based on the
evolution of forensic technology
that we'll be able to glean more
of it as the years go on.
Okay. So, stay tuned.
Stay tuned.
Roswell is a black hole,
and it's easy to see
why so many people
get sucked in,
never to get out again.
The proof always seems
just out of reach.
Our analysis today throws
a fair amount of cold water
on the famed Ramey memo,
but I suspect that won't
convince the true believers.
I leave Roswell behind
for the last leg
of my 50,000-mile journey...
The analysis of the evidence
I've collected
during my month-long
investigation.
To help me examine the numerous
pieces of video evidence,
I enlist the help
of investigator Ben Hansen,
who's worked with the FBI
to determine and debunk
so-called paranormal footage.
Also assisting is my director
of photography, Brian Weed.
No one knows more about cameras
and what can be done
with them than Brian.
Why don't we start
with the footage from Chile.
In Chile's Atacama Desert,
Ufologist Rodrigo Fuenzalida
gave us several
intriguing videos
from his current investigations.
We examine a few of them,
from a strange red light
that moves too slowly
to be a plane...
That looks like
a helicopter to me.
...to a hovering glimmer
that Ben is able to determine
is actually something
at ground level.
Perhaps a light on the back
of a receding truck.
If we're looking for UFOs,
this is definitely
not a flying craft.
Okay. So let's move on
to the next clip.
But then we look
at a third video
that isn't so easily solved.
Of all the stuff
that Rodrigo showed us,
I have to say, this one
was the weirdest to me.
What do you think of this thing?
There was something
about it that bugged me.
I have found definitive proof
that it is an elaborate,
if somewhat sloppy, hoax.
Really? Yes.
Prove it.
When you lighten the exposure
of the entire video
and we take this frame by frame,
you can see a point
where the stretched video
becomes far narrower.
You see...
You see clear lines
there and there.
...clear lines.
This is actually several
layers of video
stacked on top of each other.
They were probably filming
with a cellphone camera,
and they were filming vertical,
which is a pet peeve of mine.
I don't know why people do that.
I know. But you can clearly
see it there.
It's like someone's holding up
a cellphone vertically,
and then, it clearly
is the same image
just stretched out
a few frames before.
Now I want to show you
one more smoking gun
that this has been manipulated.
Up toward the top...
Oh, yeah. You can
see there's actually
a break here in the video.
There's definitely
something layered
on top of something else.
So, no doubt in your mind
what we're seeing here
is a manipulated piece of video.
Definitively, a hoax video.
100%.
So, along with the videos
we got from Rodrigo,
we actually captured
a video, as well.
Brian was out there as well
as Evan, my other cameraman,
and Evan captured this.
Up here.
Come here.
Get a camera over here.
You see it? Right there?
- What the hell is that?
- You see it right there?
So, when I saw this, I was like,
"Wow. Okay. This is great,"
because I have a lot of
experience looking at objects
in the sky with night vision.
Well, the intensity
really impressed me.
This is something
that we didn't just see
on the night-vision scope.
We saw this clearly
with the naked eye.
That's what first got
my attention.
- Yeah.
- I mean, it was really bright.
I mean, the fact that
you guys are seeing it
with the naked eye,
it's appearing
when no other stars
really appear on the
night-vision scope, it's moving.
Well, I love it. I love it.
So, what is it?
I'm not able to tell you
what it is.
It's still a mystery.
Put it in that "gray box."
Right. So something possibly
compelling there,
but ultimately unidentifiable.
Correct.
After reviewing
the Chilean footage,
we next turn to
a remarkable video
my crew captured
in Mina, Arkansas,
with investigator
Chase Kloetzke.
Oh! Right there! Brian, get
a camera over here. Come here.
Left to right, right in there.
You see it?
So, what do you
make of this video?
You see what we have here,
this in night-vision world,
is called a halo
or blooming effect.
Uh-huh.
And that tells us
that the intensity
has overwhelmed
the intensifier tube,
and it's doing all it can to
shut down the available light.
So whatever you were seeing
is bright enough
to come through the foliage
to create the blooming
effect, and it's slow.
Did you get the sense
that it was, like, hovering?
At times, it seemed like
it was hovering,
and then it would
sort of move along,
and then it would kind of...
It just sort of drifted along.
For me, it was moving,
and I did have to follow it.
What about the possibility
that someone had a drone
far enough away
you couldn't hear it
and they had an LED light
that they're able to turn on
and then turn it off?
Can't imagine you could
fly a drone
in that thick of a forest
at night in pitch black
without crashing it into a tree
within the first few seconds.
I don't know what it is.
I don't.
So what you guys have captured
is quite literally a UFO.
It's unexplained
and quite remarkable.
Great. Nice work, buddy.
The videos we've analyzed
have all been intriguing,
but Brian has one
more thing to show
that even I don't see coming.
Well, listen, before we wrap up,
there's one other thing
I want you to see.
Okay.
We shot some video
in Easter Island.
There's something there.
What? Yes.
It was not until we were
looking at the footage,
getting ready for this,
that we noticed this.
Okay.
Now you've got my attention.
Play it.
Get out of here!
What? Did you see that?
In a video lab at the
"Expedition Unknown" offices,
my director of
photography Brian Weed
is about to show me a piece
of newly discovered footage
from our month-long
investigation
into extraterrestrial life.
It was not until we were
looking at the footage,
getting ready for this,
that we noticed this.
You've got my attention.
Play it.
Oh!
Get out of here! What?
Did you see that? Wait.
Play it again, play it again,
play it again.
Here it comes.
Right there. Wait. It turns.
It does.
Exactly.
Hold on. Again, again, again.
Is it a shooting star?
Uh, I wouldn't say
it's a shooting star.
It's turning.
Unconventional maneuvering
at high speeds.
It just kind of...
Shww!... disappears.
Pause it right there.
You mean right there,
on the flying saucer?
We're not looking at a meteor.
You're gonna have
to put that again
in that unexplained category.
It's still a "UFO."
So, Brian, I have to say,
I was impressed
with your work
as a camera operator before.
Now I'm... Now I'm gobsmacked.
This is an insanely fitting end
to the expedition.
We have one of these
mysterious Moai statues
staring off into space,
and right through
the middle of the frame,
an unidentified flying object.
Yeah. That's awesome.
Hey, thank you guys very much.
You're welcome. I appreciate it.
Nice work, buddy. Thanks.
In the days following
our video analysis,
more test results
begin to arrive.
The bones we discovered
underneath Easter Island
could only be photographed.
A forensic examiner later
positively identified them
as human, meaning that Sixtu
and I stumbled upon
an ancient Rapa Nui tomb.
Finally, there's
Professor Wainwright
and the samples we collected
with our weather balloon.
Scientists continue
to analyze the evidence,
but the particle itself
is almost certainly organic,
which means it might not be
long before Professor Wainwright
makes an announcement
that could rock the universe.
After covering 50,000 miles,
I return home having made
a shocking discovery...
A growing consensus among
the world's brightest minds,
from meteorite-chasing
geologists
and planet-hunting astronomers
to the brave men and women
living and working
among the stars.
They all agree that
the existence of alien life
is a near certainty.
The most recent data suggests
there could be in excess of
40 billion Earth-like planets
orbiting in the habitable zone
of their stars,
and that's just in
the Milky Way galaxy.
As for the researchers digging
for evidence of ancient aliens
here on Earth, I respectfully
disagree with their conclusions.
Humanity's past may be
filled with mystery,
but that doesn't
make it otherworldly.
To the eyewitnesses
who are resolute
that they have seen UFOs,
I, too, have seen things
I can't explain,
and I believe that you believe.
But without
corroborating evidence,
the truth will always
be a matter of debate.
And as for me, I come away
from my expedition believing
that alien life has
probably not visited Earth,
but I am now 100% convinced
that life is out there.
And if intelligent life
does exist,
I have to believe that
they're looking for us, too.
Because if I've learned
anything in the last month,
it's that when it comes
to wondering about life
on other planets...
...we are not alone.

Tonight, the final chapter
in my hunt for
extraterrestrials.
Watch out!
Our experiment to
collect particles
from the edge of space
returns to Earth...
There it is right there!
...and we may have brought back
a galactic hitchhiker.
What is that?
This thing probably has never
been seen in the history
of man before.
After spanning the globe,
I return to the U.S. to
investigate a sighting
that has locals
running for the hills.
Oh! Right there!
A big light.
And I'll go west
to take on the most infamous
UFO case in history.
Welcome to
Roswell Army Air Field.
This is where
the conspiracy started.
The memo tells us
there's been alien visitation.
- It's a smoking gun.
- Absolutely.
Then, my evidence from around
the world is put to the test.
So, what is it?
What will the final verdict be?
Up here.
Get out of here!
- Did you see that?
- What?!
My name is Josh Gates.
I've traveled to more than
a hundred countries,
exploring age-old legends.
- Oh, wow.
- Look at this!
And now I'm tackling
mankind's greatest question...
Are we alone in the universe?
Join me on a global quest
for answers...
Away! There she goes.
...and an investigation
that is out of this world.
Oh! Right there!
Hunt For Extraterrestrials."
Are we alone in the universe?
It's something
we've all wondered.
Dreaming of life
on other planets
is an experience that
all of humanity shares.
Just by sheer number,
there has to be life out there.
The search for
extraterrestrial life
is advancing
by leaps and bounds,
all while mysterious
sightings of UFOs
are being reported
across the globe.
In my quest to find out
how close we are
to proving the existence
of alien life,
I've traveled to
four continents.
And now, in a field outside
of Sheffield, England,
I've joined forces with
Professor Milton Wainwright,
who's testing a bold theory
that alien life
might already be floating
just above planet Earth.
What we're looking for is
evidence towards the theory
that life came from space.
So if it came in then,
it should be coming in now.
Milton and his team
are launching a large balloon
to the edge of the atmosphere.
Away! There she goes.
The experiment
is straightforward.
Wainwright's balloon will
attempt to capture
organic particles from
the edge of the atmosphere.
No organic material from Earth
could get blown this high up,
so if any particles
are lurking there,
it must have
fallen in from space.
And if even one such
extraterrestrial particle
can be confirmed, it means
that life exists beyond Earth.
We need to chase
this thing down,
so all systems go. Let's go.
Back to the car.
Okay, let's do it. Come on.
Let's go find this thing.
We use GPS trackers to
follow the balloon's path.
Look at that!
I mean, it looks like
it's almost in space.
So, it says "Door opened,"
and it's collecting
particles, hopefully.
- It is.
- Go, science.
With the samples collected,
the balloon bursts,
and the experiment falls
back to Earth for recovery.
Now we're on a race
to find the box
and get it to the lab
as soon as possible.
This is just about to land
ahead of us, I think.
Touchdown. Punch it, Chewie.
There it is!
There it is right there!
- Let's see what we got.
- Here we go.
- In one piece.
- Looks pretty in one piece.
Hard to believe that this thing
was, a few minutes ago,
100,000 feet up.
That's right.
Still feels quite cold to me.
It does.
Feels like a freezer box.
We keep this closed?
Yes, we make sure the samples
are well-protected.
We're gonna get back
in our chase-down vehicles
and then meet back up
with Professor Wainwright
and get these
analyzed in the lab.
All right.
To the edge of space and back.
Okay. Let's do it, guys.
Come on.
We quickly haul the box
into the truck and steer toward
Professor Wainwright's lab at
the University of Sheffield.
Inside the high-tech facility,
the box is taken away
to be prepped
while we have to scrub
down our gear
and ourselves for a trip
inside a clean room.
Any particles that we bring in
from the outside
can contaminate the samples,
so we wipe down the equipment
and wrap ourselves
in sterile gowns and gloves.
I'm a lunch lady.
Wow. Look at this.
This is clean.
- This is the clean room, yeah.
Once we're allowed
to set foot in the lab,
we sit down in front
of Professor Wainwright's
scanning electron microscope,
which can image objects
smaller than 1/100
the diameter of a human hair.
All right, these are the stubs
that we exposed
in the stratosphere.
Okay.
The microscope takes
a few minutes to work.
Based on how we're dressed,
I feel like we're
waiting for a baby.
That's right. There's a real
waiting-room vibe
here at the hospital.
Professor Wainwright has
only conducted
a handful of tests like this
and has received promising
results on each occasion.
We're hoping to get
a significant result today,
since this is the first
time this experiment
is being documented on camera.
It's a bit like waiting
for images from the moon.
Exactly.
The team moves the camera
on the electron microscope
around the edge of the
sample tray we sent to space,
looking for any particles
that might have become attached.
Finally, the microscope
gets a hit.
Oh. What's that? You see that?
That little guy.
Yeah, we do have definitely...
Definitely an instance.
Yeah. Okay. We've hit
something. What is it?
We don't know what it is
until we get closer and closer.
It's getting a kind of
biological shape about it.
Wow. This is
looking interesting.
Yes.
You can see I'm getting
excited here, right?
So, what is that?
Remember, this thing has
probably never been seen
in the history of man before.
I think we're allowed
to get excited.
Yes, absolutely.
If that does prove out to be
something that's organic,
not terrestrial,
you're talking about...
Life from space.
What is that?
That's amazing.
- Look at that.
- What is that?
That certainly looks
biological, I think, yeah.
It's about 20 microns in size.
Is that small enough that
it could've been sent up
from the planet surface?
No, this is four
or five times too big.
This did not come from Earth.
If it's biological and it's not
from the planet's surface,
then that's...
That's extra terrestrial?
Well, what else can it be?
Um...
Wait. Did we just find
an extraterrestrial?
Is that what you're saying?
Well, if it isn't, I don't know
the answer to what it is.
I might be looking at
extraterrestrial life here.
That's crazy.
That's completely insane.
I feel like running to a phone
booth to call the news wires,
but before that happens,
the find needs to be verified.
If this turns out to be
what it looks like...
Yeah.
...this changes everything.
It's a paradigm shift, okay?
Yeah.
It means that there's life
in the cosmos.
We're not alone.
Dr. Wainwright's tests
are making headlines
around the world.
Skeptics are convinced
that the particles,
like the one we found,
must be from Earth.
Others are applauding his work
and rushing to repeat
and verify the results.
Time will tell.
But Professor Wainwright
seems certain
that the particle
we're staring at
is from a galaxy far, far away.
While the scientific community
continues to study
Dr. Wainwright's findings,
I'm not gonna
stop investigating.
Back in the States,
I'm turning my attention
to the single most famous
UFO case in human history...
The 70th anniversary
of Roswell...
Where I hope to use
new technology
to make a break
in the infamous cold case.
But with a few days before
the festivities kick off,
I'm making a pit stop
to investigate a UFO sighting
that happened yesterday.
Literally.
I arrive to meet a renowned
UFO investigator
at the State Line Bar
on the border Arkansas
shares with Oklahoma.
And when I saw on the border,
I mean on the border.
How you doing?
Fine. How are you today?
I'm great, thanks.
What can I get you?
Well, I'm driving.
You got a root beer back there?
Yeah. I'll take it.
I sit and drink my root beer
in Oklahoma
until Chase Kloetzke
walks in from Arkansas.
- Josh?
- Hey.
I'm in Oklahoma. Come on over.
Chase is the Director
of the Special Assignment Team
for the oldest and largest
UFO investigation network
in the world, MUFON.
First of all,
what does MUFON stand for?
MUFON stands for
the Mutual UFO Network.
And what separates MUFON
from other reporting centers
is that we have investigators.
'We have over 4,000 members
and investigators
all over the world ready to
put boots on the ground.
And what's your
specific background?
I'm a biomechanics engineer
for the Department of Defense.
I'm actually a master
trainer/master instructor.
Wow. So you have a really legit
background coming into this.
So, what are we doing here?
What's brought you...
And me now...
To the Oklahoma-Arkansas border?
A really great case
has just come in.
It's a couple that had
a very strange event
happen on their property.
It's not far from here.
Has anyone been out there
to check it out?
We're gonna be the first.
Well, let's get out there.
I'm ready.
Let's go. After you.
We leave Oklahoma and climb back
into the Jeep in Arkansas.
Josh, before we leave,
we have to get you
an official MUFON uniform.
Yes! Love this.
This is amazing.
Mulder and Scully, let's go.
The truth is out there.
Here we go!
Our destination is two hours
into the mountains,
where a family claims
to have seen dramatic lights
hovering in the sky.
We finally arrive at
the Board Camp Crystal Mine
to meet the Murphy family...
How you doing? I'm Josh.
...Orville, Cheryl,
and their son, Josh,
who walk us down to the
location of their sighting.
This is it. - This is it.
We were standing right here.
We were watching out
this area here,
and we were seeing
little glows of light.
Then, the top of the hill
just glowed.
I mean, the brightest
glow you ever seen.
And just a couple
of seconds later,
we saw three beams of light...
Two together, one off
to the side...
But they were flat
right across the top.
They went up, just quit.
And all three of you saw this?
Yes, absolutely.
Our first impression was,
"It looks like a spotlight."
But how can a spotlight be
out in the middle of the woods
when there's virtually
nothing behind it?
There's really no homes,
no driveways, no roads.
Okay.
We would love answers.
Yes.
The lights have been seen
on several different occasions,
all around the same
time of night.
So when the sun sets,
Chase and I hike to the scene
to try to see
the evidence ourselves.
Okay.
So, the site's back this way.
We have a totally
unobstructed view.
By the way, it's about
the same time as it was
when they had their experience.
- About that time?
- It's about that time.
Okay. Let's go dark here.
Okay.
Okay.
And see what we see.
Ooh, ooh, ooh.
I just saw something.
I'm headed to investigate
the mother of all UFO mysteries
with top-secret access
at Roswell.
But first, I stopped off
in the Ozark Mountains,
where a local family has
repeatedly seen bright lights
in the skies behind
their property.
Now researcher Chase Kloetzke,
with the renowned
UFO investigation group MUFON,
has brought me out
to the site in the hopes
that whatever happened
to the family
will happen to us.
Ooh.
I just saw something.
Ooh, ooh, ooh. Right there.
What is that?
There. See it?
That little sparkle?
- Yes.
- Firefly?
I believe that is a firefly.
I mean, those are quick
flashes of light.
Any chance that's
what they're seeing?
I don't think so.
They must see these
all the time.
Right.
And what they're describing
is significantly bigger,
and the light seemed
to last for longer, right?
Absolutely.
We leave the fireflies
alone and decide
to survey the edges of the area
where the sighting occurred.
Is it common to get a report
like these folks are saying
that not only do they see lights
but that they're seeing them
night after night after night?
Historically, this area
has hundreds of UFO reports.
So there's actually accounts
in this area that go back?
Absolutely.
Josh, what is that?
What is what?
It was just... You see where
the big bunch of trees...
Oh! Right there!
Yes, yes.
Wait. What the... is that?
A big light... Yes.
...cruised right through here.
Guys, can we get
a camera over here?
So, right in here.
Left to right, right in there.
You see it?
See it? See it?
Guys, guys, guys, right here.
- Got it? You got it?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's gone.
It's gone.
But there was, like,
a good light there.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
That's crazy.
I don't know what that was.
Chase, what was that?
I can tell you what it wasn't.
It was not a firefly.
It was, like, a big...
It was so different,
it caught my eye. Right.
It was like a ball of light.
Yeah.
Almost was exactly
what they reported seeing.
Right.
We probably should do
a little more canvassing.
See if it shows up again.
Yeah.
Eyes to the sky, everybody.
Keep looking up.
We investigate
for the rest of the night.
Whatever caught our eye
doesn't show itself again.
Two questions linger...
Did we actually get a glimpse
of what the Murphys
saw last night,
and if so, what is it?
It's like trying to
put together a puzzle
but you don't actually know
what the shape of the puzzle's
meant to be.
That's the fun part for us
is getting out here,
because one day,
we're hoping to see
what that picture looks like.
Right.
See what it all really means.
Yeah.
As the sun comes back up,
Chase has a working file
on the Murphys' sighting
to bring back to MUFON, and we
have our video to analyze,
to see if this case
can be put to rest
or whether the flying objects
seen here remain unidentified.
And speaking of unidentified,
I'm heading west,
where I'm planning on using
new technology and techniques
to shed light on the most
infamous UFO case in history.
In the first week of July 1947,
a craft of unknown origin
wrecks on a ranch outside
of Roswell, New Mexico.
Officials from the Air Force
step in and seal off the site,
first claiming
there's a downed saucer
and then, suddenly,
just a weather balloon.
And now, exactly 70 years
later to the day,
people are still
fiercely debating
what really happened here.
Also, they're throwing
one hell of a party.
It is impossible to do
an investigation
about extraterrestrials
and not come to
Roswell, New Mexico.
After all, this is
the most famous,
the most iconic close-encounter
story in the world.
And to the people here in town,
well, it's not just seen
as an historic
intergalactic event,
it's kind of a way of life.
Welcome, Earthlings,
to the city of Roswell.
The streets are packed with
tens of thousands of people,
and everywhere you look,
there's something to see.
Or something you wish
you'd never seen.
Insanity.
There are museums
dedicated to the crash,
gift shops dedicated to
making money off the crash...
...and famous speakers.
This is Mr. Travis Walton,
the world's most famous
alien abduction story.
"Fire in the Sky" right there.
It's tough to cool down
in the scorching desert sun.
I mean, it is hot out.
Am I right?
I know. Boiling.
Then, I see it... the perfect
way to beat the heat.
Whoa!
And stage my very own
Roswell crash.
I'm alive!
Once the sun goes down,
the whole town comes out
for the annual
Roswell UFO parade.
The grand marshal this year...
A very special and humble guest.
How are you?!
Well, not too humble.
A guy could get used to this.
Hiya!
The next morning,
the celebration is over,
and I dive headfirst
into the latest information
on the Roswell crash.
70 years of conspiracy theories
have muddied the story,
but thankfully, there are
modern researchers
taking a level-headed
approach to the investigation.
To help me break new ground
on the Roswell case,
I'm on my way to meet
a renowned journalist
at a very exclusive location.
Welcome to Roswell
Army Air Field.
My hunt for extraterrestrials
has finally arrived
in Roswell, New Mexico,
where I'm about to get
an audience with the Pope...
Nick Pope, that is.
He's a renowned journalist
and Roswell researcher
who's also investigated
UFO reports
for the British government.
He's arranged
very exclusive access
to a local aircraft hangar.
Nick. Great to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too.
And welcome to
Roswell Army Air Field,
as it was back in 1947.
This base was home
to the 509th Bomb Group,
the only atomic-bomb-capable
squadron in the world.
And this place is really central
to the Roswell
incident story, right?
After the debris was recovered,
this is where they took it.
So, whatever crashed out there
in the desert, it went here.
Yes. And for those people that
believe there were alien bodies,
as well as just the wreckage,
they were stored in there, too.
Awesome.
While the facility
is long decommissioned
and closed to the public,
Nick has secured permission
to step inside.
Okay. So, take me back
in time a bit.
So, what is meant
to have happened here
that put Roswell on the map?
Well, in 1947, the military
put out a press release,
and they said, "We have
recovered a flying disk."
This then made headlines
all around the world.
So this is
the Roswell Daily Record,
July 8, 1947.
"RAAF Captures Flying Saucer
on Ranch in Roswell Region."
So, what happens after this?
Well, what happens is that,
within 24 hours,
the military go from saying,
"We've recovered one
of these flying disks,"
to saying, "No, everyone
has made a mistake.
It was just a weather balloon."
Right.
And we see this story
in the next day's paper,
and the general effectively
debunks the flying-disk story.
And the high-ranking official,
who's Brigadier General
Roger Ramey,
he's saying now,
"It's just a weather balloon."
Yes.
People who believe
in conspiracies say
that's when
the conspiracy started.
That's day one of the government
covering this up.
The wreckage disappeared,
and most of the documents
were classified or went missing.
But this hangar,
the one-time home
of a supposed
alien craft, remains.
And there's one door in the
building that has been closed
for a very, very long time.
Well, out here, in the main
body of the hangar,
that's where
the debris was kept,
but those people who say
there were bodies, as well,
believe that they
were kept in here.
This was the room?
This was the room.
This is literally, like,
the alien-autopsy room.
Absolutely.
Cadavers out and an autopsy
conducted on them.
How many people
have been in here?
Only a handful of people
outside this base
have ever looked into this room.
Really? Yeah.
Okay. Well, let's bust it open.
Actually, I'm not kidding.
I don't like locked
doors, and so,
after nearly
three hours of meeting
with the hangar's current owners
and maintenance staff,
they agree to help us
get to the heart
of the Roswell mystery.
Okay.
Here we go.
No, uh... No alien bodies.
Sadly not.
But if these walls
could talk, right?
Oh, they'd have a heck
of a story.
If some people are
to be believed,
this is where we really
found out, or rather,
the U.S. government found out,
that we're not alone
in the universe.
Do you think that
something extraterrestrial
came to this room?
I'm undecided.
I haven't yet seen enough
evidence to make me say,
"Yes, it was definitely aliens."
So what will it take to finally
make a call on Roswell?
Well, this is like a cold case,
like an unsolved
murder or something,
and sometimes some
new piece of evidence
does come forward,
and as it happens,
there is some new
piece of evidence
that might help blow open
the whole mystery and solve it.
In the Roswell hangar
where conspiracy theorists
believe an alien craft
was stored 70 years ago,
journalist Nick Pope
is explaining to me
that there may still be
some new ground to cover
on this infamous case.
There is some new
piece of evidence
that might help blow open
the whole mystery
and solve it.
Okay.
If you look at
one of the iconic photos
taken after the incident,
you see the general,
Roger Ramey,
and in his hand is a document.
This is perhaps the most
famous photo in UFO history.
General Ramey stooped over
a crushed weather balloon.
Roswell supporters claim
this photo op
was designed to cover up
the actual crash.
They believe Ramey's orders are
in plain sight in his left hand.
General Ramey is the senior
military officer
involved with this.
So the document that
he's holding
almost certainly pertains
to the Roswell incident itself.
Now, that photo is the only
evidence of this document.
The original seems to have
been lost, disappeared.
We don't know.
If we can read that document,
we might be able to solve
the whole mystery.
Right. Now, as it happens,
there is an excellent researcher
doing some work on this...
Kevin Randall.
He has access to the original
negative of that picture,
which is in an archive
in Arlington, Texas.
He'd be a great person
for you to go and see,
because if you can read
that document,
it really could be a way
of solving the whole mystery,
one way or the other.
Incredible.
To view the Ramey photo, Nick
sends me to Arlington, Texas,
and the University of Texas
Special Collections division.
Waiting for me there
is his colleague,
researcher Kevin Randall.
So, let's start with this.
Why is the Ramey memo
so important to so many people?
Because the Ramey memo is
the single most important
piece of documentation we have
related to the Roswell case.
Ramey's holding the thing
in his hand.
Right.
If it can be properly read
and it says what some
people believe it says,
it proves that there
was alien visitation.
To the believers,
it's a smoking gun.
Absolutely.
Countless researchers have tried
to enhance the photo,
and like everything
about Roswell,
the results have been
a matter of fevered debate.
There's consensus on only
a few words in the memo.
Most believes claim
to see the phrase
"victims of the wreck,"
which they believe is proof
that alien occupants
were recovered
by the military in 1947.
And what makes this
analysis today different?
So, we're starting with
the original negative.
It's being scanned
specifically for the purpose
of attempting to read
what the memo says.
Okay.
We enter the library, and
waiting for us in a cool room
are librarian Brenda McClurkin
and our forensic
photo analyst Mike Primeau.
Nice to meet you. Pleasure.
These very famous
Ramey-memo photos are here.
Yes. Yes, they're here,
in the cold vault.
I'm excited to see the original.
Let's do it. Okay.
I'm ready.
The vault is meticulously
kept at 38 degrees
to prevent the film inside
from developing mold,
curling, or decay.
The Ramey photo is one of
the most valuable here
and is rarely handled.
This is the photo
that has sparked
more than a half a century
of debate.
And that is the
original negative.
Yes, it is.
Wow. That's incredible.
And the memo, we see,
is in his hand there, yes?
Yes, uh-huh.
Mike, let's talk about
what happens from here.
What is generally the process
of getting into
the analysis of this photo,
from the negative stage?
This negative would need to be
scanned into a digital format,
put on a computer
with the appropriate software,
and then we take a look at it.
Got it.
Mike scans the negative
and begins the laborious process
of forensically
analyzing the photo.
Every pixel is scrutinized.
This is the first time
an impartial,
court-certified expert
has done this kind of
a examination on the Ramey memo.
And after hours of work,
he's ready to show the results.
Using forensic
enhancement techniques,
here we've got multiple
coloring filters,
we apply some sharpening.
Okay.
So, as we adjust these
and change the filters...
the color balance has revealed
more to the human eye.
Right. Now, to be clear,
you're looking at this
with fresh eyes.
Yes.
You don't have a dog
in this fight.
Exactly.
With your fresh eyes
and experience,
what do you see?
Out of the first visible line
of text, we can't see anything.
Nothing.
We can't ready anything. No.
In the second line,
I was confidently able
to identify
"...and the viewing of the..."
the letter "G"
"...connected to the..."
And does that line up
with what other people
have seen in that line?
Absolutely not.
It doesn't?
At the University of Texas,
Special Collections division,
forensic expert Mike Primeau's
analysis of Roswell's infamous
Ramey memo has just uncovered
a major new discovery.
"...and the viewing of the..."
the letter "G"
"...connected to the..."
And does that line up
with what other people
have seen in that line?
Absolutely not.
It doesn't?
No.
What a lot of people
have seen in the line
is "The victims of the wreck."
"The victims of the wreck."
"Victims of the wreck."
And you're seeing
the word "viewing."
That's correct.
"Viewing" changes
the whole meaning
of what's going on there.
"Victims" implies a crew.
"Viewing" suggests
you're looking at something.
How confident are you
that that word is "viewing?"
I think it says "viewing,"
and that's something I would be
100% confident in
in saying in a court of law.
Okay.
That... I mean, that,
in some way,
kicks a pretty major leg
out from the chair
on this as a smoking gun.
As a smoking gun, yes. Okay.
And then, from the next line,
what do we see?
"...at Fort Worth..."
"...in the 'rise'"
or "disc."
Well, now, hold on.
That's a biggie.
So, it might say "rise"
or it might say "disc."
That's what I'm able
to glean from it.
Right.
And this, I assume, is another
major component of the case
for this being UFO-related.
And in the UFO community,
the consensus is that
"disc" is what the word is,
and that brings it into the
context of an alien spacecraft.
Mike continues
to take us line by line
through the words
he's been able to decipher.
None appear to directly refer to
flying saucers or alien bodies
or a cover-up.
So how significant is it
to have this kind of analysis?
It's extremely important.
If it doesn't say
"victims of the wreck"
and it doesn't say "disc,"
then we've moved a great
distance from the idea
that this is a smoking gun,
proving that Roswell
was an alien spacecraft.
Sure.
I guess one fair thing
that a Roswell proponent
could say is that we still
can't read 80% of the memo.
You could say that.
So, the question is,
do you think we'll ever be able
to read the rest of it?
I believe that, based on the
evolution of forensic technology
that we'll be able to glean more
of it as the years go on.
Okay. So, stay tuned.
Stay tuned.
Roswell is a black hole,
and it's easy to see
why so many people
get sucked in,
never to get out again.
The proof always seems
just out of reach.
Our analysis today throws
a fair amount of cold water
on the famed Ramey memo,
but I suspect that won't
convince the true believers.
I leave Roswell behind
for the last leg
of my 50,000-mile journey...
The analysis of the evidence
I've collected
during my month-long
investigation.
To help me examine the numerous
pieces of video evidence,
I enlist the help
of investigator Ben Hansen,
who's worked with the FBI
to determine and debunk
so-called paranormal footage.
Also assisting is my director
of photography, Brian Weed.
No one knows more about cameras
and what can be done
with them than Brian.
Why don't we start
with the footage from Chile.
In Chile's Atacama Desert,
Ufologist Rodrigo Fuenzalida
gave us several
intriguing videos
from his current investigations.
We examine a few of them,
from a strange red light
that moves too slowly
to be a plane...
That looks like
a helicopter to me.
...to a hovering glimmer
that Ben is able to determine
is actually something
at ground level.
Perhaps a light on the back
of a receding truck.
If we're looking for UFOs,
this is definitely
not a flying craft.
Okay. So let's move on
to the next clip.
But then we look
at a third video
that isn't so easily solved.
Of all the stuff
that Rodrigo showed us,
I have to say, this one
was the weirdest to me.
What do you think of this thing?
There was something
about it that bugged me.
I have found definitive proof
that it is an elaborate,
if somewhat sloppy, hoax.
Really? Yes.
Prove it.
When you lighten the exposure
of the entire video
and we take this frame by frame,
you can see a point
where the stretched video
becomes far narrower.
You see...
You see clear lines
there and there.
...clear lines.
This is actually several
layers of video
stacked on top of each other.
They were probably filming
with a cellphone camera,
and they were filming vertical,
which is a pet peeve of mine.
I don't know why people do that.
I know. But you can clearly
see it there.
It's like someone's holding up
a cellphone vertically,
and then, it clearly
is the same image
just stretched out
a few frames before.
Now I want to show you
one more smoking gun
that this has been manipulated.
Up toward the top...
Oh, yeah. You can
see there's actually
a break here in the video.
There's definitely
something layered
on top of something else.
So, no doubt in your mind
what we're seeing here
is a manipulated piece of video.
Definitively, a hoax video.
100%.
So, along with the videos
we got from Rodrigo,
we actually captured
a video, as well.
Brian was out there as well
as Evan, my other cameraman,
and Evan captured this.
Up here.
Come here.
Get a camera over here.
You see it? Right there?
- What the hell is that?
- You see it right there?
So, when I saw this, I was like,
"Wow. Okay. This is great,"
because I have a lot of
experience looking at objects
in the sky with night vision.
Well, the intensity
really impressed me.
This is something
that we didn't just see
on the night-vision scope.
We saw this clearly
with the naked eye.
That's what first got
my attention.
- Yeah.
- I mean, it was really bright.
I mean, the fact that
you guys are seeing it
with the naked eye,
it's appearing
when no other stars
really appear on the
night-vision scope, it's moving.
Well, I love it. I love it.
So, what is it?
I'm not able to tell you
what it is.
It's still a mystery.
Put it in that "gray box."
Right. So something possibly
compelling there,
but ultimately unidentifiable.
Correct.
After reviewing
the Chilean footage,
we next turn to
a remarkable video
my crew captured
in Mina, Arkansas,
with investigator
Chase Kloetzke.
Oh! Right there! Brian, get
a camera over here. Come here.
Left to right, right in there.
You see it?
So, what do you
make of this video?
You see what we have here,
this in night-vision world,
is called a halo
or blooming effect.
Uh-huh.
And that tells us
that the intensity
has overwhelmed
the intensifier tube,
and it's doing all it can to
shut down the available light.
So whatever you were seeing
is bright enough
to come through the foliage
to create the blooming
effect, and it's slow.
Did you get the sense
that it was, like, hovering?
At times, it seemed like
it was hovering,
and then it would
sort of move along,
and then it would kind of...
It just sort of drifted along.
For me, it was moving,
and I did have to follow it.
What about the possibility
that someone had a drone
far enough away
you couldn't hear it
and they had an LED light
that they're able to turn on
and then turn it off?
Can't imagine you could
fly a drone
in that thick of a forest
at night in pitch black
without crashing it into a tree
within the first few seconds.
I don't know what it is.
I don't.
So what you guys have captured
is quite literally a UFO.
It's unexplained
and quite remarkable.
Great. Nice work, buddy.
The videos we've analyzed
have all been intriguing,
but Brian has one
more thing to show
that even I don't see coming.
Well, listen, before we wrap up,
there's one other thing
I want you to see.
Okay.
We shot some video
in Easter Island.
There's something there.
What? Yes.
It was not until we were
looking at the footage,
getting ready for this,
that we noticed this.
Okay.
Now you've got my attention.
Play it.
Get out of here!
What? Did you see that?
In a video lab at the
"Expedition Unknown" offices,
my director of
photography Brian Weed
is about to show me a piece
of newly discovered footage
from our month-long
investigation
into extraterrestrial life.
It was not until we were
looking at the footage,
getting ready for this,
that we noticed this.
You've got my attention.
Play it.
Oh!
Get out of here! What?
Did you see that? Wait.
Play it again, play it again,
play it again.
Here it comes.
Right there. Wait. It turns.
It does.
Exactly.
Hold on. Again, again, again.
Is it a shooting star?
Uh, I wouldn't say
it's a shooting star.
It's turning.
Unconventional maneuvering
at high speeds.
It just kind of...
Shww!... disappears.
Pause it right there.
You mean right there,
on the flying saucer?
We're not looking at a meteor.
You're gonna have
to put that again
in that unexplained category.
It's still a "UFO."
So, Brian, I have to say,
I was impressed
with your work
as a camera operator before.
Now I'm... Now I'm gobsmacked.
This is an insanely fitting end
to the expedition.
We have one of these
mysterious Moai statues
staring off into space,
and right through
the middle of the frame,
an unidentified flying object.
Yeah. That's awesome.
Hey, thank you guys very much.
You're welcome. I appreciate it.
Nice work, buddy. Thanks.
In the days following
our video analysis,
more test results
begin to arrive.
The bones we discovered
underneath Easter Island
could only be photographed.
A forensic examiner later
positively identified them
as human, meaning that Sixtu
and I stumbled upon
an ancient Rapa Nui tomb.
Finally, there's
Professor Wainwright
and the samples we collected
with our weather balloon.
Scientists continue
to analyze the evidence,
but the particle itself
is almost certainly organic,
which means it might not be
long before Professor Wainwright
makes an announcement
that could rock the universe.
After covering 50,000 miles,
I return home having made
a shocking discovery...
A growing consensus among
the world's brightest minds,
from meteorite-chasing
geologists
and planet-hunting astronomers
to the brave men and women
living and working
among the stars.
They all agree that
the existence of alien life
is a near certainty.
The most recent data suggests
there could be in excess of
40 billion Earth-like planets
orbiting in the habitable zone
of their stars,
and that's just in
the Milky Way galaxy.
As for the researchers digging
for evidence of ancient aliens
here on Earth, I respectfully
disagree with their conclusions.
Humanity's past may be
filled with mystery,
but that doesn't
make it otherworldly.
To the eyewitnesses
who are resolute
that they have seen UFOs,
I, too, have seen things
I can't explain,
and I believe that you believe.
But without
corroborating evidence,
the truth will always
be a matter of debate.
And as for me, I come away
from my expedition believing
that alien life has
probably not visited Earth,
but I am now 100% convinced
that life is out there.
And if intelligent life
does exist,
I have to believe that
they're looking for us, too.
Because if I've learned
anything in the last month,
it's that when it comes
to wondering about life
on other planets...
...we are not alone.
