Escape to the Chateau (2016–2019): Season 5, Episode 4 - Peak Summer - full transcript
It's the height of summer and the heat is on for Dick and Angel, with the peak of the events season, wedding cakes melting, school holidays, a boating lake, and a leaky boat.
(light music)
- [Narrator] In the heart
of the French countryside,
a magnificent 19th
century chateau stood
un cared for and abandoned.
Until four years ago
when everything changed.
- [Angel] Look at that.
- [Narrator] And an
intrepid British couple.
- Turn, turn, turn, turn, wow.
- [Narrator] Paid 280,000 pounds
to turn it into their
dream family home.
- Everything is gorgeous.
- It's so incredibly important
to bring it back to life.
- [Narrator] Since
they moved in,
engineer Dick Strawbridge
and his wife, designer Angel
have transformed
almost all 45 rooms,
including three
sumptuous guest suites
for their wedding
and events business.
But despite their hard work,
their dream has often
resembled a nightmare.
- You should not be
able to see the sky
out of your roof.
- Behind every romantic
story is the reality.
- [Narrator] Now it's
the height of the summer
and it's time to find
out what happens next.
- [Dick] We are floating.
- [Narrator] In this 21st
century French fairytale.
In the 1860s, the Count
and Countess de Baglion
commissioned the building
of a new summer residence.
It had to be both
stunningly beautiful
and heartbreakingly romantic.
The result, a
spectacular chateau.
Now, 150 years later.
- It's chateau de
la motte husson.
- [Narrator] Dick and
Angel are determined
to keep the romance alive.
- [Dick] We're married.
- [Narrator] First
with their own marriage
and then with each wedding
that they've hosted here since.
But in a few week's time,
there is a particularly
special wedding being held.
One in which the bride and groom
will be reunited with
their friends and family
for the first time in a year.
And as it's turned out to be
one of the hottest
summers on record,
Dick and builder mate Steve
have some urgent work to do.
- On this table during weddings
there's hundreds
of cakes left out,
little soft patisseries
with gels and cream
and all sorts on them.
We've had a couple of issues,
the temperature in here
gets really quite hot
and we've had some
of them delivered
and when they've been delivered,
they've been on the edge.
So we need to make
this room cold
and this was our answer.
It cools down a
little bit sadly,
cooling down a little
bit isn't enough
to keep cakes from
melting in the summer.
So we're on plan B,
plan B is an air conditioning
unit for this room
to keep the cakes cold.
So we're looking for
somewhere to stick this
where the hot air can go.
I'm not breaking any
of these windows,
these are all glass so
our answer is service
kitchen down into the pantry.
Connect it through the wall,
vent down to go downstairs.
And then whenever it comes time
to put the air conditioning on.
- [Steve] Take it out.
- Shove it in the back of
the air conditioning unit.
Becomes winter, we
don't need it any more,
it goes back into the cupboard,
just stays out of the way.
- [Narrator] Dick's
plan may sound simple,
but when you live in a house
where the walls and floors
are up to three feet thick,
things soon get complicated.
- We're gonna come
through the side of this
and then straight down.
So there's a hole through there,
a hole through the side of this,
hole through the bottom of this,
hole through the floor,
hole through the ceiling.
All to keep the cakes from.
- Melting.
- [Dick] Can you see the end?
- No.
- That's a bummer.
We're all the way in
I have an extension.
Hello, did it come through?
- [Steve] Yeah spot on.
- [Dick] That's a good start.
Steve.
- Yes?
- Is that hole big enough?
- Yes.
- [Dick] I'm gonna pass you
down the silvery bit next.
- Okay.
I think I'll let
it cool down a bit.
- [Dick] So we've got
plenty of room on this side.
- [Steve] Yes.
- Hello darling,
squirting out my cold air.
Our job here is done.
That was easy wasn't it?
Turn it on.
That's quite nice.
Hot under the
sink, that is nice.
Thank you, thanks mate.
- Okay.
- Good next one.
- [Narrator] Now
the dust is settled,
Angel has decided
it's time to audit
her vast collection of
vintage cutlery and crockery.
- Everything is hectic
and the only way that
we're gonna get through it
is if we're gonna be organized.
- [Narrator] This
year, Dick and Angel
have hosted more weddings
than ever before.
And as there's more to come,
Angel's desperate to
stay on top of things.
- We've had weddings
back to back
and things got a bit misplaced,
it's all a bit grotty,
I don't know where anything is.
There's soup spoons in
with the cake knives,
it's just chaos in my world.
I tell ya you don't wanna
get on the wrong side of Dick
when his favorite knives have
been used for the wedding.
Oh my god, the rath.
What is this doing
in the wedding box?
So I have behind his back
just taken everything
that ours back,
putting it into circulation
and just making sure
that everything's right.
But I've gotta sort it out
and part of me is feeling
like I haven't really got time
to do this but I know
if I don't do it,
it's gonna be chaos.
- [Narrator] Some of
Angel's crockery might be
over 100 years old,
but they're still in
full time employment.
- If you don't use it,
it just stays behind glass
and no-one gets any enjoyment.
One, two.
But there have been
a few breakages
of some of my favorite stuff
and my heart's gone.
So what I've done is
I've taken some bits out
and this is also part of
what I'm doing at the moment.
And I'm putting them away
for Dorothy, Dorothy.
- [Narrator] The 8,000
square meter moat
that surrounds Dick
and Angel's chateau
once protected a
medieval fortress.
But when the Baglioni
family decided to transform
the castle ruins into a
stunning 19th century chateau,
the moat transformed from
an impassible defense
into an aquatic playground.
Now as it's the school holidays,
the children have asked
if they can continue
messing about on the water.
So Dick has decided to
build them and himself
a new boat for the moat.
- The boat is going
to be quite simple.
We're talking about
sides, so two sides.
And then this side
over here comes up
with another one like this.
Then we've got our base,
then we've got our triangles
come at the front.
I think we need those
for sort of coming ashore
and looking more boaty.
- Yes.
- [Narrator] The design
may be a bit vague
but Dick's aim it clear,
to have lots of fun in the sun.
- Basically it's a punt
with a little bit of a splash
capability at the front.
We could turn this
into a sailing boat.
I can see us having a mast.
You see that's
where the mast goes
and we can put a block in
there, a block in there.
You're gonna have to test
it when it goes into,
I can see a mast can't you?
- You have to test anyway.
- What could possibly
go wrong Steven?
- [Narrator] In fact it
appears boat building
is a lot more complicated
than expected.
- I really hope you don't,
oh you're doing it
upside down are you?
- [Steve] You've got me now.
- [Dick] Right this is
the bottom of the boat.
It's going to be
like that isn't it
because we've got
the side to go on.
- [Steve] Yes.
- The bottom line is we're
gonna get it all right
then we'll just gunk
it up completely,
we'll make sure
there's no leakage
'cause that'd just be the
embarrassing thing wouldn't it?
It's gonna be a solid
little boat isn't it?
- [Steve] It is.
- We like solid.
I'm always one for
I want it to work
rather than
necessarily look good.
This may end up looking
a bit like a skip,
but it'll work.
That's holding up
there isn't it.
Turn it over and make
it look like a boat,
mate that's a heavy
piece of boat.
- [Narrator] Before
it goes on the water,
Dick decides to give it
some rigorous testing.
It's the middle of the summer
and the height of
the wedding season.
At the chateau, most of
the celebrations are held
in the 19th century orangery.
Once a symbol of prestige
amongst the upper classes,
the orangery was not just
an elaborate conservatory,
but also a place to
entertain guests.
And as it's over 200
meters from the chateau,
the original servants probably
had just as much trouble
transporting food and drink
to it as Dick and Angel.
Dick though has had enough
of cycling in the heat
and as the next wedding
is in two weeks time,
he's bought himself a
second hand golf buggy,
if he can get it to work.
- Sadly the batteries
in it were car batteries
and they never charged up.
And we've invested in
proper batteries for this.
They should last
for 1,200 recharges
which is 1,200 weddings.
Sort of 12 weddings
a year, is a century.
That bit there does stretch.
That negative goes to the
next plus, which is this one,
that's one done, next.
When you're working
in electricity,
see this is my solder,
it's all very delicate it's
not like my plumbing solder.
But this is my plumbing torch,
it's a bit of a mismatch.
Number one priority is
don't melt the rubber.
It looks like I'm just playing
but at the end of the day,
we will have a golf
cart that works
and I am just playing.
Okay, so negative,
positive to negative,
positive to negative,
positive to negative,
that's all I need to know.
When this is done it's
gonna make our life
a lot easier.
What's the chances
of this working?
Do you know what's
really good by the way
I've got a big smile on my face
'cause there's a
little red blip here
that means I've got 48
volts fully charged.
Turn it on.
And actually nothing happens
but that doesn't matter.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we have another
capability on the chateau.
It works.
You beauty!
Hello everybody,
lovely to see you,
yes we have a buggy.
- [Narrator] Inside the chateau,
Angel has big plans for
the grand staircase.
Five meters high
and costing the equivalent
of 50,000 pounds to make,
the elegant split reverse
curve wooden staircase
was designed to impress.
And when Dick and
Angel first saw it.
- This is not too shabby.
- [Narrator] That's
exactly what it did.
- It's pretty incredible.
Three and a half years ago
when we first walked
up those stairs,
this had just this beautiful
burgundy lino in it
with gold up the edges.
- [Narrator] Now three
and a half years later,
Angel would like to bring
back its original grandeur.
- I always had in my mind
that I wanted to have
a burgundy carpet on.
But, burgundy carpets,
they're not in fashion
and no-one really makes them
so it's caused a
bit of a problem.
And we are on a bit of a
deadline to get this carpet in
because the wedding is
in under two weeks time.
- [Narrator] But
at the last minute,
Angel has found a
company who can help.
- They've even got
the original type
of brass fitted acorn head.
And now I'm thinking I might
even hang some flowers up
and put some flowers on
the walls I'm not sure.
I feel quite excited
about what I can get up to
in here now.
- [Narrator] As well as
preparing for weddings,
Arthur and Dorothy
also need entertaining
as it is the school
summer holidays.
- Right have we got
everything we need?
What have we got, saw,
we've got some string,
we've got some
glasses for daddy.
Right move over please.
- [Narrator] Today's
fun activity,
making a mast for the new boat.
- Right where's the bamboo?
I think it's round behind the
walled garden we have to go.
- [Dorothy] It is.
- [Dick] Bye Steve, we're
off to get some masts,
could be some time.
- Bye!
- [Narrator] Particularly
since Dorothy
is helping Dick to drive.
- Daddy help.
- What do you mean help.
- Daddy.
- No, no, mind the car,
mind the car, look
where you're going.
- [Narrator] While
Dick and the children
head off into the wilds
of the chateau woods.
Up in her craft room,
Angel's practicing
her pyrography
and making the
boat's name plate.
A nautical nod to
Dorothy's nickname.
- Now this little machine
is just like a wood
burning machine
and they come with
all different nibs.
And they do come with a
stencil but they're tiny,
which we can make
some up yourself.
Burning wood, smells good.
- Who can see the bamboos?
Whoa lots of bamboos, let's
come to here, here we go.
We've gotta chose a mast.
It's a bamboo forest.
Now I'm looking for masts.
What about look how big it
is, it's snowing tree leaves.
Okay watch it here,
daddy's sawing it.
Is this mast gonna be good?
- Good.
- It's that one!
Right shall we take it
out and trim it outside?
Look how big it is, watch
your feet coming out,
make sure you hold it.
Keep coming out, keep
coming out, keep coming out.
We're down.
Look now, now, whoa
hold it up for me.
That's a big mast isn't it?
- [Arthur] Yeah.
- Right we're
taking this back now
and we're gonna see about
attaching it to our boat.
Let's go, ignition on.
Can you do it all the way,
all the way round, that's good,
tell me when we're
there, perfect.
Wowee, hold on let's just see,
it's exactly the
size of the boat.
Right here we go, this one
looks like, are you ready?
It's a bit bigger
than I anticipated.
Angel Strawbridge,
Angel Strawbridge we
need finishing touches.
Hello mommy, mommy,
what do you reckon?
- That looks nice.
It's very long isn't it?
- [Narrator] And a mast
of such grand proportions
obviously deserves
a proper pennant.
- So it's a floating dodo
from the port husson.
- Arthur what I want you to do
is to draw around
the lines all right?
Brilliant, Arthur that is a
fantastic dodo, that's it.
I can nearly feel a flag coming.
- Can I be a ninja turtle?
I'm a ninja turtle, oh
mommy where are you?
- What is that?
- Dodo.
- That looks like
a dodo doesn't it?
Okay we're good yeah
you can drop it.
We've got a dodo flag!
- [Narrator] Now it has a sort
of official name and flag,
the floating dodo
registered at the rather
unofficial port husson.
- [Angel] That's nice there.
- [Narrator] Is
prepared for launching.
- Hoist the pennant
sir, look it's going up.
It's going up, good
hoisting, good hoisting look,
the floating dodo is
at the top, how's that?
Okay the pennant
is up ready to go.
The name is on
ready to go, okay,
let's get life jackets on.
- [Angel] I do not like the
fact this hasn't been tested.
Where's the bucket
to get water out?
- [Dick] It's called a bailer
and we don't need that.
We don't need that at all.
Are you ready,
got the rope team?
- Yeah.
- Yep.
- [Dick] All right, are
you out of the ground?
- [Angel] Yep.
- [Dick] Well it looks good,
the floating dodo is actually
on the water full stop.
Oh there's water going into it.
- [Angel] What's that?
- Just said there was
water but I was joking, oh.
We are floating, we should
have a big cheer hooray!
- [Narrator] Now he knows the
floating dodo actually floats,
Dick's keen to power
up and take it out.
Even if the rest of the
family isn't yet convinced.
- [Dick] Sit feet
inside, feet inside,
sit your bum down there please.
- [Angel] Come on Dorothy.
- Are you sitting down Dorothy?
Brilliant, hold on to the
pat, Arthur sit in, sit in,
are you in, sit beside Dorothy.
- You and your boats.
- [Dick] This
could be even more.
- [Angel] No we're
okay, we're all okay.
- We've run aground a
little bit, that's okay.
Right we're going out
a little bit now, good.
I'm just testing it
going around in circles,
it is a punt you see.
It's actually quite stable.
The fish are jumping up
when we go past them,
oh the fish just nearly
jumped into the boat,
did you see that?
- [Narrator] The floating
dodo's sea trials
are deemed a success.
Though it may need a few tweaks.
- [Angel] I'm not just saying
it but there is a little leak.
Should we get a bucket?
- [Dick] No that
doesn't count as a leak.
Oh there is some water.
- [Narrator] It's the
week of the wedding,
but as it's also the school
holidays and incredibly hot,
the Strawbridge family
has squeezed in a few
days at the seaside.
On their return though,
Angel's straight out of the car
as her three and a half
year wait is finally over.
- [Dick] Oh let's see
how happy mommy is.
In you go girl.
Arthur look at the stairs.
- [Angel] Oh my goodness.
- [Narrator] While
they were away,
Angel's grand staircase
carpet has been fitted
and it's just as
majestic as she hoped.
- Does that look
amazing or what?
That is beautiful.
- It's good isn't it?
- It just feels so right.
- [Dick] What's it
like up at the top?
- [Dorothy] Good.
- I am so happy.
- I think the brass
rods are right.
- The brass rods
are exactly right.
- [Narrator] The new
brass acorn head rods
perfectly match the ones
originally installed
by the Baglioni family.
- [Dick] So this isn't ready
for weddings yet is it?
- I've gotta dress this yet.
Foliage, candles, faux candles.
- Do you know my best
part about this was?
- What?
- I felt no pain.
We went away and we came
back and we had a carpet,
that's the way to do it.
- [Narrator] Two days later,
wedding preparations
at the chateau
are once again in full swing.
- (foreign language)
- [Arthur] I have the power.
- [Narrator] For everyone,
this wedding is extra special
because a year ago
the couple moved
to the west coast of America.
So their wedding weekend will
not only be a celebration
of their love,
but a huge reunion with
their family and friends.
- Eucalyptus good good.
I just wanna get these in water
and get on and come
back to them later.
- [Narrator] The
celebrations will last
for almost three days.
So Dick's been sent out
for food, a lot of it.
(foreign language)
- It's not working.
Angela will never believe me
when I say I haven't got any
fresh squeezed orange juice.
We're having a garlic and
onion dip on the table
and onion marmalade and goat's
cheese for the canapes so
need my shallots.
We've talked to
the bride and groom
and the people know what
they're going to get roughly.
But if I don't find good
stuff, I don't feed it.
- [Narrator] One thing
Dick knows is good
is the local cheese
and it's just a short drive
to one of 10 fromageries
in the area.
- We are in the center of
dairy and beef in France here.
This suits us down
to the ground,
the area we've actually
come to is gorgeous
and the cheese is here.
And because the cheese
is local of course.
There's no calories.
(foreign language)
This is 15 cheeses to
be baked in the oven
and these are just for when
people get the munchies later on
we always have some
cheese in, okay.
- [Narrator] While
Dick's been preoccupied
with the catering,
Angel's been quietly
zhushing up his golf buggy.
Now she's asked
local artist Michael
to add some
chateau-esque touches
while she brightens
up the upholstery.
- This is having a
tablecloth put on it,
a waterproof tablecloth.
Need to get right in there.
That looks a quite
neat little fold.
Let's see how that looks.
That looks good,
that's neat enough.
- [Narrator] But any
further work on the buggy
will have to wait,
as the bride and groom,
Christie and Neil have arrived.
- Hello gorgeous,
you've got blond.
Gorgeous.
- How are you?
So good to see you!
- Mr. Strawbridge is
just arriving home.
- [Christie] How are you both?
- We're good.
- We're good.
- [Narrator] The
first thing Angel does
is to make sure the wedding
dress is kept safe and sound.
- I shall put the kettle on.
Very precious cargo.
Wow that,
that is so, so, so,
so, so beautiful.
There's a handful of
people that get to see
Christie's wedding dress
and I'm one of those few
and I feel very,
very privileged.
And it makes me feel
quite emotional.
- [Narrator] It's Friday morning
and this afternoon, the
couple's 80 guests are coming
to the chateau for a
pre-wedding reunion
and a hog roast dinner.
For Angel, Dick and their team
it's the start of three
days of complex logistics
and a lot of hard work.
- Now I'm getting my
master flow together.
Because if the team
doesn't have this
and it is about five
or six pages long
I'm just asked
questions all day.
What size napkins do we
put out for this etc.
So this is their
bible, my bible.
- [Narrator] Like
the Baglioni family,
Angel has a team of
around nine people
to ensure everything
runs smoothly.
- Take my apron off for this.
- Welcome team member.
Right so then Quentin, Tina,
you're in charge of the kitchen.
There isn't anything
surprising on here
but there are a coupe
of little bits and bobs
that you need to know.
Cake arrival is the bit
that I'm a little bit
just concerned about.
- Well put it this way we will
not miss the cakes arriving.
Craig will be there, there'll
be people downstairs.
We've got walkie talkies,
we will not miss
the cake arriving.
- Yeah exactly.
- The cake's arrived
everybody, two, four, hello the
cakes have arrived, standby.
Right I'm going back to
the kitchen, I'm happy.
- Don't worry so okay.
- [Narrator] There's been
a heatwave all summer.
Dick's 2,000 square
meter walled garden
is bursting with produce.
Though there's not enough
to feed 80 weddings guests,
it can provide some
useful ingredients.
- We do spiced seeds with
the cheese that we bake.
And to spice it,
we need some spice.
Could do with a
couple of chili's.
A couple of chili's,
see what else is ready
down here since I'm in.
Plenty of aubergines.
- [Narrator] While Dick
focuses on the food,
Angel's busy creating
a bridal crown
with eucalyptus leaves.
- I love doing this
but I always wish
I had a little bit more time.
You're always a little
bit under pressure,
but it's all fine.
I mean you know I'm
not complaining,
I wouldn't have
it any other way.
Right, 2:21.
- [Narrator] In the kitchen,
Dick is preparing what
he can for tomorrow's
nine course wedding banquet.
- With the hot cheeses,
we have spicy seeds.
And our spicy seeds,
pumpkin, sunflower
and I got a mixture which
has got extra pine nuts in it
because pine nuts taste nice.
So these aren't nuts actually,
these are all seeds
and the idea is we toast those.
While that's toasting,
take some of the chilis
that we've just got
from the garden.
You're never quite sure
how hot they're going to be
until you taste them.
Yes, yep that's hot.
I'm only gonna put
one chili in this.
- [Narrator] But it's
not the first time
Dick has allowed things
to get a bit too hot.
Two years ago, he
converted an old oil tank
into a hog roaster and
it's still going strong.
- The roaster is custom
built for 80 people.
Logs a mixture, we're
using pear today,
pear mixed with some old oak.
The pigs go very, very black
it's not 'cause
they're over cooked
it's because of the smoke.
Better get yourself
in that hole.
There you go, straight
in, done, thank you.
Quarter past the hour.
- [Narrator] Inside the chateau,
some design decisions
have been made.
The eucalyptus leaf
bridal crown is now going
to have a matching bouquet.
- It's a very special honor
to be asked to do this.
This is for Christie's
bouquet so it's special
and to be honest her style
is quite up my street,
it's quite wild.
Thing is when you're
doing your bouquets,
this wild look, there is a
little bit of an art to it
because all of the
leaves and flowers
have all have their
moment to sing.
Yeah she'll be happy with this.
- [Narrator] It's 5:00
p.m. it's still hot
and Christie and Neil's 80
wedding guests are on their way.
- I would get these and get
all the glasses on them ready
and get as many jugs as you can.
- [Narrator] For Dick, Angel
and their team, it's showtime.
- They've arrived, the 10,000
people want feeding quickly.
- [Narrator] For
Christie and Neil,
it's a moment they've been
waiting a whole year for.
The chance to see their
family and friends again.
- I know Christie will be
happy now everyone's here.
It's the only worry I
think that brides have
is that everyone's
gonna get here.
And now they're here
so the party can begin.
- [Chef] Right quick check in.
Sit it on the table.
- Nice crispy noise.
We always start
people eating now,
the second part will be ready
in no time at all, thank you.
- There we go.
- Thank you very much.
- You're welcome, I love
a well behaved child.
Can I have a little nibble?
- [Dick] Course you can.
- This is why I fell
in love with you.
- [Narrator] As well as
tasty pork crackling,
Angel also loves the fact
that the pollarded trees
are finally starting to provide
some shade from the sun.
When the party comes to an end,
most of the guests head
back to their accommodation
in the nearby town of Leval.
(applause)
But for Dick and Angel's team,
the evening is not yet over
as there are still jobs to do.
And that includes
driving the van de van
over to the orangerie ready
for tomorrow's wedding feast.
- I should really
invest in a new battery.
We've got boosters,
let's see what happens,
right that's it there.
Oh come on you bad boy.
That's only plan A.
- [Narrator] While Dick
hunts for some jump leads,
Angel heads upstairs
but not to bed.
- I'm doing one of my classic
I don't know what
I'm quite doing
but I've got an idea things.
So my idea is to place
some oasis up and around.
These Hydrangeas are great
because they're still fresh
but they've started to dry.
I really, really wanted
to get this finished.
I could do it in the morning
but there'll be a lot
happening tomorrow morning.
- [Narrator] Tomorrow,
the bride will descend
the grand staircase on
her way to her wedding
and Angel's determined
to make every step
from top to bottom beautiful.
- Hi.
- Just gets me feeling.
Shout if you need anything else.
Little wedding fairies
and sleep let's be honest,
it's a bit overrated isn't it?
- [Narrator] Outside, Dick
has finally had some success
with the van de van.
- Every time that
happens it's a miracle.
- [Narrator] It's
dawn on the morning
of Christie and Neil's wedding.
And Dick is already preparing
for this afternoon's
nine course wedding banquet.
- It's a beautiful morning,
it is truly gorgeous.
You know that both
Christie and Neil,
when they wake up
and look out there
are gonna be smiling.
Good, not a bad start
to your wedding day.
I'm just getting the beef on.
- [Narrator] To ensure the
beef is delicately tender,
Dick is slow cooking
it sous vide,
in water heated to a
specific temperature.
- 51 degrees, temperature's
coming up there.
Once it gets up we'll
get the beef in.
- [Narrator] While Dick
looks after the food,
Angel makes sure the chateau
is beautifully dressed.
After all, it does
have a starring role.
- I probably have about
60 things going on
in my head right now
just to make sure
that everything falls into place
and it always, always does.
Good, wild, what she wants.
- [Narrator] Happy
with the flowers,
Angel's next job is to
prepare a delicious breakfast
for the eight guests
staying in the chateau.
And that means a quick
trip to the local bakery.
- (foreign language)
- [Narrator] As well as
buying some (foreign language)
for the guests, Dick also
put in a not so petit request
for 80 baguettes.
- (foreign language)
- [Narrator] As soon as
Angel is back at the chateau,
breakfast is served.
- [Angel] Have you
done honeymoon suite.
- No but.
- Absolutely yeah
I'll get the napkins.
- [Narrator] Continental
style of course.
- Lets get three of these
on and croissant, yeah.
- [Narrator] Downstairs, Dick
has vacuum packed the beef
before putting it
into the sous vide.
Once it's in water,
Dick can leave it to gently
cook for the next seven hours.
- Perfect.
- [Narrator] Even though the
beef can be ignored for a while
there are another eight
courses to prepare
as well as over 300 canapes.
He may have a lot to do,
but Angel's keen
to introduce Dick
to their latest team member.
- Wait here, close your eyes.
- No way.
Oh it's coming.
- Open your eyes!
- Right do you know what,
I was expecting a paint job,
I wasn't expecting the herbage.
- [Narrator] The golf
buggy has been transformed
into un camion de carrying.
- [Angel] Your chariot awaits.
- [Narrator] And
in Angel's eyes,
it's dressed to impress.
- This is.
- No hold on.
- [Dick] It's real,
it's all gone with her.
- [Angel] No it's not it's a
little bit of both actually.
- [Dick] Are you
gonna drive me now?
- Yeah.
- [Dick] Where are
you driving me to?
- Shall we go on a date to work.
- Back to the kitchen.
- [Narrator] Over
in the orangerie,
the dining tables are set
with Angel's collection
of vintage china.
As well as personalized napkins
for each of the
80 wedding guests.
For Angel, it's
touches like this
that makes every
wedding memorable.
And back at the chateau with
the guests due any minute,
Angel makes sure that
the grand staircase
is living up to its name.
- The coach is on the
way which is fine.
Staircase is looking lovely.
- [Narrator] In a quiet corner,
Dick has swapped
his chef's apron
for the more formal attire
of the wedding celebrant.
As Angel heads upstairs,
she desperately hopes
her handmade bouquet
lives up to expectations.
- [Angel] Oh my god
you're so beautiful.
I've managed to
find a seed as well
in old French linen.
- The embroidery.
- It's a bit wild,
it's beautiful,
it's just like you isn't it?
- It's so beautiful.
- Right I'm gonna get Charlotte
to take a picture of this.
So gorgeous.
- [Narrator] In the salon,
Dick and the groom also have
some floral decisions to make.
- [Dick] You like that one?
- [Narrator] As well as
a few nerves to steady.
- [Dick] That's not a problem.
What do we reckon?
- That looks pretty good to me.
- Are you sure?
- [Narrator] In
the bridal suite,
Angel, ever the perfectionist
makes sure everything
is spot on.
- Thought it was a bit
like that wasn't it?
- Yeah it's perfect.
- [Narrator] As the
wedding ceremony begins,
the chateau is once again
filled with love and celebration
just as it was 150 years ago.
- Neil, Christie,
in the presence of your
family and friends,
you've pledged to share your
lives together with love.
On behalf of everyone here,
may I wish you much love,
happiness and laughter
far into the future
as you officially begin
married life together.
Congratulations
Neil and Christie,
I now pronounce you
husband and wife,
Neil you may kiss your bride.
(applause)
Ladies and gentlemen,
I present to you
the happy couple,
Neil and Christie.
Mr and Mrs. Potter.
(applause)
- [Narrator] With
love in the air,
the guests can begin
their celebrations.
- Right so canapes.
- [Narrator] But
for Dick and Angel,
now the real work starts.
- Right what have we got,
we've got those are vegan.
Looks lovely.
- [Narrator] As the outside
temperature hits 26 degrees,
the heat is on to make
sure everything runs
as smoothly as possible.
- [Angel] (foreign language)
Oh my god I'm gonna
sit and lock the doors
and eat these all myself.
- [Narrator] Inside
the dining room though,
Dick's new air conditioning unit
has created the
perfect temperature
to keep the cakes
and Angel cool.
- [Angel] Oh man I am
so hot I'm just gonna
it's like having a Marilyn
moment, that is so nice.
- Are you ready?
- I'm ready let's go.
- [Narrator] Next time,
dusty destruction.
- [Dick] This is
quite a good game.
- [Narrator] Neon nerves.
- [Dick] Are you ready darling?
- I love it, I
absolutely love it.
- [Narrator] And
color conflicts.
- What do you think of the oak?
- [Woman] I'm not sure
about that, are you?
- Sorry.
- It needs to be uniform.
- [Narrator] In the heart
of the French countryside,
a magnificent 19th
century chateau stood
un cared for and abandoned.
Until four years ago
when everything changed.
- [Angel] Look at that.
- [Narrator] And an
intrepid British couple.
- Turn, turn, turn, turn, wow.
- [Narrator] Paid 280,000 pounds
to turn it into their
dream family home.
- Everything is gorgeous.
- It's so incredibly important
to bring it back to life.
- [Narrator] Since
they moved in,
engineer Dick Strawbridge
and his wife, designer Angel
have transformed
almost all 45 rooms,
including three
sumptuous guest suites
for their wedding
and events business.
But despite their hard work,
their dream has often
resembled a nightmare.
- You should not be
able to see the sky
out of your roof.
- Behind every romantic
story is the reality.
- [Narrator] Now it's
the height of the summer
and it's time to find
out what happens next.
- [Dick] We are floating.
- [Narrator] In this 21st
century French fairytale.
In the 1860s, the Count
and Countess de Baglion
commissioned the building
of a new summer residence.
It had to be both
stunningly beautiful
and heartbreakingly romantic.
The result, a
spectacular chateau.
Now, 150 years later.
- It's chateau de
la motte husson.
- [Narrator] Dick and
Angel are determined
to keep the romance alive.
- [Dick] We're married.
- [Narrator] First
with their own marriage
and then with each wedding
that they've hosted here since.
But in a few week's time,
there is a particularly
special wedding being held.
One in which the bride and groom
will be reunited with
their friends and family
for the first time in a year.
And as it's turned out to be
one of the hottest
summers on record,
Dick and builder mate Steve
have some urgent work to do.
- On this table during weddings
there's hundreds
of cakes left out,
little soft patisseries
with gels and cream
and all sorts on them.
We've had a couple of issues,
the temperature in here
gets really quite hot
and we've had some
of them delivered
and when they've been delivered,
they've been on the edge.
So we need to make
this room cold
and this was our answer.
It cools down a
little bit sadly,
cooling down a little
bit isn't enough
to keep cakes from
melting in the summer.
So we're on plan B,
plan B is an air conditioning
unit for this room
to keep the cakes cold.
So we're looking for
somewhere to stick this
where the hot air can go.
I'm not breaking any
of these windows,
these are all glass so
our answer is service
kitchen down into the pantry.
Connect it through the wall,
vent down to go downstairs.
And then whenever it comes time
to put the air conditioning on.
- [Steve] Take it out.
- Shove it in the back of
the air conditioning unit.
Becomes winter, we
don't need it any more,
it goes back into the cupboard,
just stays out of the way.
- [Narrator] Dick's
plan may sound simple,
but when you live in a house
where the walls and floors
are up to three feet thick,
things soon get complicated.
- We're gonna come
through the side of this
and then straight down.
So there's a hole through there,
a hole through the side of this,
hole through the bottom of this,
hole through the floor,
hole through the ceiling.
All to keep the cakes from.
- Melting.
- [Dick] Can you see the end?
- No.
- That's a bummer.
We're all the way in
I have an extension.
Hello, did it come through?
- [Steve] Yeah spot on.
- [Dick] That's a good start.
Steve.
- Yes?
- Is that hole big enough?
- Yes.
- [Dick] I'm gonna pass you
down the silvery bit next.
- Okay.
I think I'll let
it cool down a bit.
- [Dick] So we've got
plenty of room on this side.
- [Steve] Yes.
- Hello darling,
squirting out my cold air.
Our job here is done.
That was easy wasn't it?
Turn it on.
That's quite nice.
Hot under the
sink, that is nice.
Thank you, thanks mate.
- Okay.
- Good next one.
- [Narrator] Now
the dust is settled,
Angel has decided
it's time to audit
her vast collection of
vintage cutlery and crockery.
- Everything is hectic
and the only way that
we're gonna get through it
is if we're gonna be organized.
- [Narrator] This
year, Dick and Angel
have hosted more weddings
than ever before.
And as there's more to come,
Angel's desperate to
stay on top of things.
- We've had weddings
back to back
and things got a bit misplaced,
it's all a bit grotty,
I don't know where anything is.
There's soup spoons in
with the cake knives,
it's just chaos in my world.
I tell ya you don't wanna
get on the wrong side of Dick
when his favorite knives have
been used for the wedding.
Oh my god, the rath.
What is this doing
in the wedding box?
So I have behind his back
just taken everything
that ours back,
putting it into circulation
and just making sure
that everything's right.
But I've gotta sort it out
and part of me is feeling
like I haven't really got time
to do this but I know
if I don't do it,
it's gonna be chaos.
- [Narrator] Some of
Angel's crockery might be
over 100 years old,
but they're still in
full time employment.
- If you don't use it,
it just stays behind glass
and no-one gets any enjoyment.
One, two.
But there have been
a few breakages
of some of my favorite stuff
and my heart's gone.
So what I've done is
I've taken some bits out
and this is also part of
what I'm doing at the moment.
And I'm putting them away
for Dorothy, Dorothy.
- [Narrator] The 8,000
square meter moat
that surrounds Dick
and Angel's chateau
once protected a
medieval fortress.
But when the Baglioni
family decided to transform
the castle ruins into a
stunning 19th century chateau,
the moat transformed from
an impassible defense
into an aquatic playground.
Now as it's the school holidays,
the children have asked
if they can continue
messing about on the water.
So Dick has decided to
build them and himself
a new boat for the moat.
- The boat is going
to be quite simple.
We're talking about
sides, so two sides.
And then this side
over here comes up
with another one like this.
Then we've got our base,
then we've got our triangles
come at the front.
I think we need those
for sort of coming ashore
and looking more boaty.
- Yes.
- [Narrator] The design
may be a bit vague
but Dick's aim it clear,
to have lots of fun in the sun.
- Basically it's a punt
with a little bit of a splash
capability at the front.
We could turn this
into a sailing boat.
I can see us having a mast.
You see that's
where the mast goes
and we can put a block in
there, a block in there.
You're gonna have to test
it when it goes into,
I can see a mast can't you?
- You have to test anyway.
- What could possibly
go wrong Steven?
- [Narrator] In fact it
appears boat building
is a lot more complicated
than expected.
- I really hope you don't,
oh you're doing it
upside down are you?
- [Steve] You've got me now.
- [Dick] Right this is
the bottom of the boat.
It's going to be
like that isn't it
because we've got
the side to go on.
- [Steve] Yes.
- The bottom line is we're
gonna get it all right
then we'll just gunk
it up completely,
we'll make sure
there's no leakage
'cause that'd just be the
embarrassing thing wouldn't it?
It's gonna be a solid
little boat isn't it?
- [Steve] It is.
- We like solid.
I'm always one for
I want it to work
rather than
necessarily look good.
This may end up looking
a bit like a skip,
but it'll work.
That's holding up
there isn't it.
Turn it over and make
it look like a boat,
mate that's a heavy
piece of boat.
- [Narrator] Before
it goes on the water,
Dick decides to give it
some rigorous testing.
It's the middle of the summer
and the height of
the wedding season.
At the chateau, most of
the celebrations are held
in the 19th century orangery.
Once a symbol of prestige
amongst the upper classes,
the orangery was not just
an elaborate conservatory,
but also a place to
entertain guests.
And as it's over 200
meters from the chateau,
the original servants probably
had just as much trouble
transporting food and drink
to it as Dick and Angel.
Dick though has had enough
of cycling in the heat
and as the next wedding
is in two weeks time,
he's bought himself a
second hand golf buggy,
if he can get it to work.
- Sadly the batteries
in it were car batteries
and they never charged up.
And we've invested in
proper batteries for this.
They should last
for 1,200 recharges
which is 1,200 weddings.
Sort of 12 weddings
a year, is a century.
That bit there does stretch.
That negative goes to the
next plus, which is this one,
that's one done, next.
When you're working
in electricity,
see this is my solder,
it's all very delicate it's
not like my plumbing solder.
But this is my plumbing torch,
it's a bit of a mismatch.
Number one priority is
don't melt the rubber.
It looks like I'm just playing
but at the end of the day,
we will have a golf
cart that works
and I am just playing.
Okay, so negative,
positive to negative,
positive to negative,
positive to negative,
that's all I need to know.
When this is done it's
gonna make our life
a lot easier.
What's the chances
of this working?
Do you know what's
really good by the way
I've got a big smile on my face
'cause there's a
little red blip here
that means I've got 48
volts fully charged.
Turn it on.
And actually nothing happens
but that doesn't matter.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we have another
capability on the chateau.
It works.
You beauty!
Hello everybody,
lovely to see you,
yes we have a buggy.
- [Narrator] Inside the chateau,
Angel has big plans for
the grand staircase.
Five meters high
and costing the equivalent
of 50,000 pounds to make,
the elegant split reverse
curve wooden staircase
was designed to impress.
And when Dick and
Angel first saw it.
- This is not too shabby.
- [Narrator] That's
exactly what it did.
- It's pretty incredible.
Three and a half years ago
when we first walked
up those stairs,
this had just this beautiful
burgundy lino in it
with gold up the edges.
- [Narrator] Now three
and a half years later,
Angel would like to bring
back its original grandeur.
- I always had in my mind
that I wanted to have
a burgundy carpet on.
But, burgundy carpets,
they're not in fashion
and no-one really makes them
so it's caused a
bit of a problem.
And we are on a bit of a
deadline to get this carpet in
because the wedding is
in under two weeks time.
- [Narrator] But
at the last minute,
Angel has found a
company who can help.
- They've even got
the original type
of brass fitted acorn head.
And now I'm thinking I might
even hang some flowers up
and put some flowers on
the walls I'm not sure.
I feel quite excited
about what I can get up to
in here now.
- [Narrator] As well as
preparing for weddings,
Arthur and Dorothy
also need entertaining
as it is the school
summer holidays.
- Right have we got
everything we need?
What have we got, saw,
we've got some string,
we've got some
glasses for daddy.
Right move over please.
- [Narrator] Today's
fun activity,
making a mast for the new boat.
- Right where's the bamboo?
I think it's round behind the
walled garden we have to go.
- [Dorothy] It is.
- [Dick] Bye Steve, we're
off to get some masts,
could be some time.
- Bye!
- [Narrator] Particularly
since Dorothy
is helping Dick to drive.
- Daddy help.
- What do you mean help.
- Daddy.
- No, no, mind the car,
mind the car, look
where you're going.
- [Narrator] While
Dick and the children
head off into the wilds
of the chateau woods.
Up in her craft room,
Angel's practicing
her pyrography
and making the
boat's name plate.
A nautical nod to
Dorothy's nickname.
- Now this little machine
is just like a wood
burning machine
and they come with
all different nibs.
And they do come with a
stencil but they're tiny,
which we can make
some up yourself.
Burning wood, smells good.
- Who can see the bamboos?
Whoa lots of bamboos, let's
come to here, here we go.
We've gotta chose a mast.
It's a bamboo forest.
Now I'm looking for masts.
What about look how big it
is, it's snowing tree leaves.
Okay watch it here,
daddy's sawing it.
Is this mast gonna be good?
- Good.
- It's that one!
Right shall we take it
out and trim it outside?
Look how big it is, watch
your feet coming out,
make sure you hold it.
Keep coming out, keep
coming out, keep coming out.
We're down.
Look now, now, whoa
hold it up for me.
That's a big mast isn't it?
- [Arthur] Yeah.
- Right we're
taking this back now
and we're gonna see about
attaching it to our boat.
Let's go, ignition on.
Can you do it all the way,
all the way round, that's good,
tell me when we're
there, perfect.
Wowee, hold on let's just see,
it's exactly the
size of the boat.
Right here we go, this one
looks like, are you ready?
It's a bit bigger
than I anticipated.
Angel Strawbridge,
Angel Strawbridge we
need finishing touches.
Hello mommy, mommy,
what do you reckon?
- That looks nice.
It's very long isn't it?
- [Narrator] And a mast
of such grand proportions
obviously deserves
a proper pennant.
- So it's a floating dodo
from the port husson.
- Arthur what I want you to do
is to draw around
the lines all right?
Brilliant, Arthur that is a
fantastic dodo, that's it.
I can nearly feel a flag coming.
- Can I be a ninja turtle?
I'm a ninja turtle, oh
mommy where are you?
- What is that?
- Dodo.
- That looks like
a dodo doesn't it?
Okay we're good yeah
you can drop it.
We've got a dodo flag!
- [Narrator] Now it has a sort
of official name and flag,
the floating dodo
registered at the rather
unofficial port husson.
- [Angel] That's nice there.
- [Narrator] Is
prepared for launching.
- Hoist the pennant
sir, look it's going up.
It's going up, good
hoisting, good hoisting look,
the floating dodo is
at the top, how's that?
Okay the pennant
is up ready to go.
The name is on
ready to go, okay,
let's get life jackets on.
- [Angel] I do not like the
fact this hasn't been tested.
Where's the bucket
to get water out?
- [Dick] It's called a bailer
and we don't need that.
We don't need that at all.
Are you ready,
got the rope team?
- Yeah.
- Yep.
- [Dick] All right, are
you out of the ground?
- [Angel] Yep.
- [Dick] Well it looks good,
the floating dodo is actually
on the water full stop.
Oh there's water going into it.
- [Angel] What's that?
- Just said there was
water but I was joking, oh.
We are floating, we should
have a big cheer hooray!
- [Narrator] Now he knows the
floating dodo actually floats,
Dick's keen to power
up and take it out.
Even if the rest of the
family isn't yet convinced.
- [Dick] Sit feet
inside, feet inside,
sit your bum down there please.
- [Angel] Come on Dorothy.
- Are you sitting down Dorothy?
Brilliant, hold on to the
pat, Arthur sit in, sit in,
are you in, sit beside Dorothy.
- You and your boats.
- [Dick] This
could be even more.
- [Angel] No we're
okay, we're all okay.
- We've run aground a
little bit, that's okay.
Right we're going out
a little bit now, good.
I'm just testing it
going around in circles,
it is a punt you see.
It's actually quite stable.
The fish are jumping up
when we go past them,
oh the fish just nearly
jumped into the boat,
did you see that?
- [Narrator] The floating
dodo's sea trials
are deemed a success.
Though it may need a few tweaks.
- [Angel] I'm not just saying
it but there is a little leak.
Should we get a bucket?
- [Dick] No that
doesn't count as a leak.
Oh there is some water.
- [Narrator] It's the
week of the wedding,
but as it's also the school
holidays and incredibly hot,
the Strawbridge family
has squeezed in a few
days at the seaside.
On their return though,
Angel's straight out of the car
as her three and a half
year wait is finally over.
- [Dick] Oh let's see
how happy mommy is.
In you go girl.
Arthur look at the stairs.
- [Angel] Oh my goodness.
- [Narrator] While
they were away,
Angel's grand staircase
carpet has been fitted
and it's just as
majestic as she hoped.
- Does that look
amazing or what?
That is beautiful.
- It's good isn't it?
- It just feels so right.
- [Dick] What's it
like up at the top?
- [Dorothy] Good.
- I am so happy.
- I think the brass
rods are right.
- The brass rods
are exactly right.
- [Narrator] The new
brass acorn head rods
perfectly match the ones
originally installed
by the Baglioni family.
- [Dick] So this isn't ready
for weddings yet is it?
- I've gotta dress this yet.
Foliage, candles, faux candles.
- Do you know my best
part about this was?
- What?
- I felt no pain.
We went away and we came
back and we had a carpet,
that's the way to do it.
- [Narrator] Two days later,
wedding preparations
at the chateau
are once again in full swing.
- (foreign language)
- [Arthur] I have the power.
- [Narrator] For everyone,
this wedding is extra special
because a year ago
the couple moved
to the west coast of America.
So their wedding weekend will
not only be a celebration
of their love,
but a huge reunion with
their family and friends.
- Eucalyptus good good.
I just wanna get these in water
and get on and come
back to them later.
- [Narrator] The
celebrations will last
for almost three days.
So Dick's been sent out
for food, a lot of it.
(foreign language)
- It's not working.
Angela will never believe me
when I say I haven't got any
fresh squeezed orange juice.
We're having a garlic and
onion dip on the table
and onion marmalade and goat's
cheese for the canapes so
need my shallots.
We've talked to
the bride and groom
and the people know what
they're going to get roughly.
But if I don't find good
stuff, I don't feed it.
- [Narrator] One thing
Dick knows is good
is the local cheese
and it's just a short drive
to one of 10 fromageries
in the area.
- We are in the center of
dairy and beef in France here.
This suits us down
to the ground,
the area we've actually
come to is gorgeous
and the cheese is here.
And because the cheese
is local of course.
There's no calories.
(foreign language)
This is 15 cheeses to
be baked in the oven
and these are just for when
people get the munchies later on
we always have some
cheese in, okay.
- [Narrator] While
Dick's been preoccupied
with the catering,
Angel's been quietly
zhushing up his golf buggy.
Now she's asked
local artist Michael
to add some
chateau-esque touches
while she brightens
up the upholstery.
- This is having a
tablecloth put on it,
a waterproof tablecloth.
Need to get right in there.
That looks a quite
neat little fold.
Let's see how that looks.
That looks good,
that's neat enough.
- [Narrator] But any
further work on the buggy
will have to wait,
as the bride and groom,
Christie and Neil have arrived.
- Hello gorgeous,
you've got blond.
Gorgeous.
- How are you?
So good to see you!
- Mr. Strawbridge is
just arriving home.
- [Christie] How are you both?
- We're good.
- We're good.
- [Narrator] The
first thing Angel does
is to make sure the wedding
dress is kept safe and sound.
- I shall put the kettle on.
Very precious cargo.
Wow that,
that is so, so, so,
so, so beautiful.
There's a handful of
people that get to see
Christie's wedding dress
and I'm one of those few
and I feel very,
very privileged.
And it makes me feel
quite emotional.
- [Narrator] It's Friday morning
and this afternoon, the
couple's 80 guests are coming
to the chateau for a
pre-wedding reunion
and a hog roast dinner.
For Angel, Dick and their team
it's the start of three
days of complex logistics
and a lot of hard work.
- Now I'm getting my
master flow together.
Because if the team
doesn't have this
and it is about five
or six pages long
I'm just asked
questions all day.
What size napkins do we
put out for this etc.
So this is their
bible, my bible.
- [Narrator] Like
the Baglioni family,
Angel has a team of
around nine people
to ensure everything
runs smoothly.
- Take my apron off for this.
- Welcome team member.
Right so then Quentin, Tina,
you're in charge of the kitchen.
There isn't anything
surprising on here
but there are a coupe
of little bits and bobs
that you need to know.
Cake arrival is the bit
that I'm a little bit
just concerned about.
- Well put it this way we will
not miss the cakes arriving.
Craig will be there, there'll
be people downstairs.
We've got walkie talkies,
we will not miss
the cake arriving.
- Yeah exactly.
- The cake's arrived
everybody, two, four, hello the
cakes have arrived, standby.
Right I'm going back to
the kitchen, I'm happy.
- Don't worry so okay.
- [Narrator] There's been
a heatwave all summer.
Dick's 2,000 square
meter walled garden
is bursting with produce.
Though there's not enough
to feed 80 weddings guests,
it can provide some
useful ingredients.
- We do spiced seeds with
the cheese that we bake.
And to spice it,
we need some spice.
Could do with a
couple of chili's.
A couple of chili's,
see what else is ready
down here since I'm in.
Plenty of aubergines.
- [Narrator] While Dick
focuses on the food,
Angel's busy creating
a bridal crown
with eucalyptus leaves.
- I love doing this
but I always wish
I had a little bit more time.
You're always a little
bit under pressure,
but it's all fine.
I mean you know I'm
not complaining,
I wouldn't have
it any other way.
Right, 2:21.
- [Narrator] In the kitchen,
Dick is preparing what
he can for tomorrow's
nine course wedding banquet.
- With the hot cheeses,
we have spicy seeds.
And our spicy seeds,
pumpkin, sunflower
and I got a mixture which
has got extra pine nuts in it
because pine nuts taste nice.
So these aren't nuts actually,
these are all seeds
and the idea is we toast those.
While that's toasting,
take some of the chilis
that we've just got
from the garden.
You're never quite sure
how hot they're going to be
until you taste them.
Yes, yep that's hot.
I'm only gonna put
one chili in this.
- [Narrator] But it's
not the first time
Dick has allowed things
to get a bit too hot.
Two years ago, he
converted an old oil tank
into a hog roaster and
it's still going strong.
- The roaster is custom
built for 80 people.
Logs a mixture, we're
using pear today,
pear mixed with some old oak.
The pigs go very, very black
it's not 'cause
they're over cooked
it's because of the smoke.
Better get yourself
in that hole.
There you go, straight
in, done, thank you.
Quarter past the hour.
- [Narrator] Inside the chateau,
some design decisions
have been made.
The eucalyptus leaf
bridal crown is now going
to have a matching bouquet.
- It's a very special honor
to be asked to do this.
This is for Christie's
bouquet so it's special
and to be honest her style
is quite up my street,
it's quite wild.
Thing is when you're
doing your bouquets,
this wild look, there is a
little bit of an art to it
because all of the
leaves and flowers
have all have their
moment to sing.
Yeah she'll be happy with this.
- [Narrator] It's 5:00
p.m. it's still hot
and Christie and Neil's 80
wedding guests are on their way.
- I would get these and get
all the glasses on them ready
and get as many jugs as you can.
- [Narrator] For Dick, Angel
and their team, it's showtime.
- They've arrived, the 10,000
people want feeding quickly.
- [Narrator] For
Christie and Neil,
it's a moment they've been
waiting a whole year for.
The chance to see their
family and friends again.
- I know Christie will be
happy now everyone's here.
It's the only worry I
think that brides have
is that everyone's
gonna get here.
And now they're here
so the party can begin.
- [Chef] Right quick check in.
Sit it on the table.
- Nice crispy noise.
We always start
people eating now,
the second part will be ready
in no time at all, thank you.
- There we go.
- Thank you very much.
- You're welcome, I love
a well behaved child.
Can I have a little nibble?
- [Dick] Course you can.
- This is why I fell
in love with you.
- [Narrator] As well as
tasty pork crackling,
Angel also loves the fact
that the pollarded trees
are finally starting to provide
some shade from the sun.
When the party comes to an end,
most of the guests head
back to their accommodation
in the nearby town of Leval.
(applause)
But for Dick and Angel's team,
the evening is not yet over
as there are still jobs to do.
And that includes
driving the van de van
over to the orangerie ready
for tomorrow's wedding feast.
- I should really
invest in a new battery.
We've got boosters,
let's see what happens,
right that's it there.
Oh come on you bad boy.
That's only plan A.
- [Narrator] While Dick
hunts for some jump leads,
Angel heads upstairs
but not to bed.
- I'm doing one of my classic
I don't know what
I'm quite doing
but I've got an idea things.
So my idea is to place
some oasis up and around.
These Hydrangeas are great
because they're still fresh
but they've started to dry.
I really, really wanted
to get this finished.
I could do it in the morning
but there'll be a lot
happening tomorrow morning.
- [Narrator] Tomorrow,
the bride will descend
the grand staircase on
her way to her wedding
and Angel's determined
to make every step
from top to bottom beautiful.
- Hi.
- Just gets me feeling.
Shout if you need anything else.
Little wedding fairies
and sleep let's be honest,
it's a bit overrated isn't it?
- [Narrator] Outside, Dick
has finally had some success
with the van de van.
- Every time that
happens it's a miracle.
- [Narrator] It's
dawn on the morning
of Christie and Neil's wedding.
And Dick is already preparing
for this afternoon's
nine course wedding banquet.
- It's a beautiful morning,
it is truly gorgeous.
You know that both
Christie and Neil,
when they wake up
and look out there
are gonna be smiling.
Good, not a bad start
to your wedding day.
I'm just getting the beef on.
- [Narrator] To ensure the
beef is delicately tender,
Dick is slow cooking
it sous vide,
in water heated to a
specific temperature.
- 51 degrees, temperature's
coming up there.
Once it gets up we'll
get the beef in.
- [Narrator] While Dick
looks after the food,
Angel makes sure the chateau
is beautifully dressed.
After all, it does
have a starring role.
- I probably have about
60 things going on
in my head right now
just to make sure
that everything falls into place
and it always, always does.
Good, wild, what she wants.
- [Narrator] Happy
with the flowers,
Angel's next job is to
prepare a delicious breakfast
for the eight guests
staying in the chateau.
And that means a quick
trip to the local bakery.
- (foreign language)
- [Narrator] As well as
buying some (foreign language)
for the guests, Dick also
put in a not so petit request
for 80 baguettes.
- (foreign language)
- [Narrator] As soon as
Angel is back at the chateau,
breakfast is served.
- [Angel] Have you
done honeymoon suite.
- No but.
- Absolutely yeah
I'll get the napkins.
- [Narrator] Continental
style of course.
- Lets get three of these
on and croissant, yeah.
- [Narrator] Downstairs, Dick
has vacuum packed the beef
before putting it
into the sous vide.
Once it's in water,
Dick can leave it to gently
cook for the next seven hours.
- Perfect.
- [Narrator] Even though the
beef can be ignored for a while
there are another eight
courses to prepare
as well as over 300 canapes.
He may have a lot to do,
but Angel's keen
to introduce Dick
to their latest team member.
- Wait here, close your eyes.
- No way.
Oh it's coming.
- Open your eyes!
- Right do you know what,
I was expecting a paint job,
I wasn't expecting the herbage.
- [Narrator] The golf
buggy has been transformed
into un camion de carrying.
- [Angel] Your chariot awaits.
- [Narrator] And
in Angel's eyes,
it's dressed to impress.
- This is.
- No hold on.
- [Dick] It's real,
it's all gone with her.
- [Angel] No it's not it's a
little bit of both actually.
- [Dick] Are you
gonna drive me now?
- Yeah.
- [Dick] Where are
you driving me to?
- Shall we go on a date to work.
- Back to the kitchen.
- [Narrator] Over
in the orangerie,
the dining tables are set
with Angel's collection
of vintage china.
As well as personalized napkins
for each of the
80 wedding guests.
For Angel, it's
touches like this
that makes every
wedding memorable.
And back at the chateau with
the guests due any minute,
Angel makes sure that
the grand staircase
is living up to its name.
- The coach is on the
way which is fine.
Staircase is looking lovely.
- [Narrator] In a quiet corner,
Dick has swapped
his chef's apron
for the more formal attire
of the wedding celebrant.
As Angel heads upstairs,
she desperately hopes
her handmade bouquet
lives up to expectations.
- [Angel] Oh my god
you're so beautiful.
I've managed to
find a seed as well
in old French linen.
- The embroidery.
- It's a bit wild,
it's beautiful,
it's just like you isn't it?
- It's so beautiful.
- Right I'm gonna get Charlotte
to take a picture of this.
So gorgeous.
- [Narrator] In the salon,
Dick and the groom also have
some floral decisions to make.
- [Dick] You like that one?
- [Narrator] As well as
a few nerves to steady.
- [Dick] That's not a problem.
What do we reckon?
- That looks pretty good to me.
- Are you sure?
- [Narrator] In
the bridal suite,
Angel, ever the perfectionist
makes sure everything
is spot on.
- Thought it was a bit
like that wasn't it?
- Yeah it's perfect.
- [Narrator] As the
wedding ceremony begins,
the chateau is once again
filled with love and celebration
just as it was 150 years ago.
- Neil, Christie,
in the presence of your
family and friends,
you've pledged to share your
lives together with love.
On behalf of everyone here,
may I wish you much love,
happiness and laughter
far into the future
as you officially begin
married life together.
Congratulations
Neil and Christie,
I now pronounce you
husband and wife,
Neil you may kiss your bride.
(applause)
Ladies and gentlemen,
I present to you
the happy couple,
Neil and Christie.
Mr and Mrs. Potter.
(applause)
- [Narrator] With
love in the air,
the guests can begin
their celebrations.
- Right so canapes.
- [Narrator] But
for Dick and Angel,
now the real work starts.
- Right what have we got,
we've got those are vegan.
Looks lovely.
- [Narrator] As the outside
temperature hits 26 degrees,
the heat is on to make
sure everything runs
as smoothly as possible.
- [Angel] (foreign language)
Oh my god I'm gonna
sit and lock the doors
and eat these all myself.
- [Narrator] Inside
the dining room though,
Dick's new air conditioning unit
has created the
perfect temperature
to keep the cakes
and Angel cool.
- [Angel] Oh man I am
so hot I'm just gonna
it's like having a Marilyn
moment, that is so nice.
- Are you ready?
- I'm ready let's go.
- [Narrator] Next time,
dusty destruction.
- [Dick] This is
quite a good game.
- [Narrator] Neon nerves.
- [Dick] Are you ready darling?
- I love it, I
absolutely love it.
- [Narrator] And
color conflicts.
- What do you think of the oak?
- [Woman] I'm not sure
about that, are you?
- Sorry.
- It needs to be uniform.
