Earth: Final Conflict (1997–2002): Season 3, Episode 21 - Abduction - full transcript

A volunteer who was working to interpret an ancient message from Ma'el assaults Da'an and escapes through a portal. Sandoval helps Da'an avoid interrogation from Zo'or while they try to locate her.

Previously on Gene Roddenberry's
Earth Final Conflict:

The Taelons next
project was called Mneme.

Technology which allowed us to
relive our most cherished memories.

I was reliving someone else's life.

So, you think that there's a real
life war movie recorded on this?

There is. And I was in it.

Have you received Ma'el's message

to allow humanity time
to evolve as equals,

Ma'el's analysis is no longer germane.

I must use humanity as
a weapon in our struggle.

Ma'el believed our two species
would be equal partners.

But it serves Zo'or's
purposes to claim that

Ma'el wanted to subjugate humankind.

So, if Sandoval and
Zo'or beat us to the punch,

Zo'or will destroy anything that
doesn't fit his version of reality.

Dr. Mazar,

I understand you are on
the verge of discovery.

You understand correctly.

Ma'el sent this missive
for over 1,000 years ago,

after he had been on
your planet for centuries.

Our efforts to
decipher it have failed.

Until now, it appears.

I am well aware of its history, Da'an,
I've been working on this project

for 3 years, in case you've forgotten.

We can only hope that
it contains the wisdom

that we have been anticipating.

Unfortunately for you,

this is as close to Ma'el's
secrets as you're ever going to get.

What is your meaning?

You've lied to me for
the last time, Da'an.

I'm on the move.
Meet me at the portal.

- Andrea, don't do this, let me help you.
- You've done enough already. Thank you.

It's too late for anything else.

- Why are you running?
- There's no time.

Go now! You can't be anywhere
near here when they find him.

Good luck.

Thank you.

Volunteer has been attacked
by the portal bay on Level F.

Subtitled by
Axarion

They have come to Earth
with the promise of peace.

An alien race called the Taelons.

But, there are those who
resist these Alien Companions.

For the Taelons' true mission,

the secrets they hide

will forever alter our world.

The fate of humanity now relies

on those who dare challenge the future

of Earth.

Where's Da'an? How is he?

I told you he's in the
medical wing under isolation.

I need to see him.

Are you questioning my orders?

My obligation is to protect
Da'an with my life is necessary.

He was nearly killed.

It'll take more than your order
to counterman that directive.

This is Da'an's medical file.

As you can see any activity
other than uninterruptible rest

places him in grave danger.

Your assignment is to
find Da?an?s assailant.

You are to report to me only and not
bring an outside law enforcement personnel.

Who's the assailant?

A rogue Volunteer named Andrea Mazar.

Any idea about her motive?

None. She assaulted Da'an and a portal
engineer, and fled the mother ship.

You are to find her and use
whatever means necessary to apprehend

or terminate her.

Do you have a problem
with the order, Major?

Murder is beyond our
authority, Sandoval.

I suggest you follow the Congressional
Record more closely, Major.

Article 34 of the New Companion
Cooperation Decree grants

protectors are licensed to kill
under extraordinary circumstances.

I should know, I am the author.

And what are the extraordinary
circumstances here?

Attempted murder.

That qualifies, don't you agree?

Da'an's injuries are not serious
enough to warrant his isolation.

We're only asking you to keep
everyone away only for a short time.

No. You're asking me to
deceive Zo'or, Agent Sandoval.

A completely different proposition
and one with considerable risk.

It is not I that is
asking, it is Da'an.

And, from my understanding, you've never
been one of Zo'or's biggest supporters.

What is the reason you
require this window of silence.

If Da'an didn't apprize you, Mit'gai,
then I'm not comfortable doing so.

It is a matter of

internal Taelon politics.

Out of respect for
Da'an I will cooperate.

But do not harbor any illusions,
my good faith has its limits.

I spent the morning at Harvard trying
to find someone there who knew Andrea.

What, you didn't
believe me when I said

I couldn't find a trace
of her in their records?

Hey, give me a break. Her bio
said she was a student there.

I thought some of my old
professors might be able to,

you know, steer me in
the right direction.

- You went to Harvard?
- Yeah.

I didn't know that they gave
out charity scholarships there.

Actually, mine was for basketball.

I struck out at the
Houston Portal Authority.

Andrea exited the portal there, but she
was able to skew the coordinates, so...

we can't be sure of anything.

You mean, she could've just turn
around and go right back into the portal

and we'd never know anything.

Yeah, if she re-entered the portal
system, she could be anywhere.

I downloaded her DNA code
from the portal records.

There might be a clue here.

Doubt it, but the pros are on
it. Sweetheart, any results?

Yes, I just finished my
global search for Andrea Mazar.

Yeah. Then can you, please,
share the successful results

of your research with my friends here?

Certainly. According to my search,
Andrea Mazar does not exist.

For what purpose have I been summoned?

You have forbidden Da'an
from receiving any visitors.

I want to hear your explanation.

You were provided with my medical log.

It is my belief that any unnecessary
strain on Da'an at this time

poses a serious risk
to his well-being.

I've read your log and I challenge
the veracity of your conclusions.

The medical wing is under
my jurisdiction, Zo'or.

You have no authority
to override my decisions.

If you disagree with my analysis,
your only option is to replace me.

I will remember that.

Just so I am in perfect understanding,

it is your contention
that Da'an is too infirm

to engage in any
degree of interrogation?

That is correct.

Major Kincaid, I pulled Dr. Mazar's DNA
code from the records to verify identity.

And as it turns out, the woman
purported to be Andrea Mazar

was in fact a woman
by the name Emma King.

She was a world-renowned chaos
mathematician who was kidnapped

and then killed in a high
profile case about 3 years ago.

- Her husband?s name is...
- Philip. Philip King.

- Yes, that's correct.
- Do you know him?

Well, not well, we met
professionally a couple of years ago.

I tried to recruit him for
Doors agribusiness division.

Oh, there's one additional
fact you might find pertinent.

The FBI agent who conducted the hostage
negotiations was Ronald Sandoval.

So, the accident that supposedly
killed Andrea's husband...

Emma's husband
obviously never happened.

Yeah, but when I spoke to
Emma's volunteer bunkmate,

she described the
accident in graphic detail.

- Emma was haunted by the memories.
- Because it was real to her.

I mean, the Taelons have
implanted false memories before.

Yeah, but they've never made
someone believe that a loved one

has been horribly killed.
That's... that's obscene and cruel.

Question is why the Taelons went
to all this trouble to kidnap Emma,

fake her death, and then
implant her with false memories.

What next?

Well, Philip King is the only lead we've
got. We have to find out what he knows.

- Or if he's cooperating with the Taelons.
- So, what are we gonna do? Ask him?

This Mazar woman is proving
very difficult to track.

She is a mathematician.

How has she proved so elusive in the face
of your professionalism in this arena?

She's also a Volunteer, Da'an.

She's had basic training in
counter-insurgency protocol.

I'll take care of the woman.
My immediate concern is Mit'gai.

Mit'gai has already made a
commitment to me to continue this ruse

until we no longer need him to do so.

- He is driven by his hatred for Zo'or.
- He is also driven by fear.

Believe me.

If Zo'or continues to push him,
he will crack and, when he does,

you'd better be prepared to
stand up to Zo'or's interrogation.

Do not concern yourself with my
preparation. Focus on your search efforts.

And...

I believe it is a mistake to include
Major Kincaid as part of the search team.

I need Major Kincaid. He's the
most capable agent I've got.

How ironic, given your vociferous
objection to naming him as my Protector.

Do you honestly believe that he will
execute your termination order if necessary?

It won't be his first option, but
he will not defy a direct order.

Unlike you, Agent Sandoval, Major
Kincaid does not possess the ability

to put aside his compassion and pity
for the common good of his species.

If Zo'or finds out what we're doing,

I'm the one who's
exposed here, not you.

I have already informed you that
I will assume full responsibility.

You would sell me out in
a minute to save yourself.

When was the last time
you stood up to Zo'or?

If you could, you'd be
running the Synod, not him.

That is inappropriate and inaccurate.

Taelon leadership
decisions are not subject

to the same petty infighting
that your species revels in.

You roped me into this
project before I knew better,

and now I have to scramble
to get out of it clean.

So, make no mistake, Da'an, I will do
whatever I deem necessary to save myself.

- Philip, come on in.
- Hello, Renee.

I must share I was very surprised
to hear from you after all this time.

Yes, well, I'm not good
at taking no for an answer.

- Please, sit down.
- Thank you.

I thought I'd take another
shot at bringing you over here.

I'm flattered, Renee, really, but
my business has never been healthier.

I know, your company's
performance over these last 3 years

has been phenomenal to say the least.

I guess that's one of the
few positive byproducts

of having nothing in
your life but your work.

You can focus on it 24 hours a day.

I read about your wife's
death, Philip. I'm sorry.

Thanks.

At least I have a business
to pour myself into.

True, true.

Although, hiding in your work
can't be the answer either.

I know.

But luckily I've got
some good friends.

They're always trying to get me out
of the office. Not that I listen.

Well, maybe you should. I'm
sure they're just trying to help.

I mean, Emma and I...

We were just meant to be together.

And I thought we always would be.

You'll find a way to move on.

When you're ready.

Yeah.

Well, I've taken up
enough of your time.

I'm sorry we can't
do business together.

But I'm really glad
we hooked up again.

Me, too.

See you.

Sandoval still won't let me see Da'an.

So, Sandoval's doing better with
the investigation than we are?

Ho, he's got no leads. And he looks
as anxious as I've ever seen him.

What did you find out?

Well, while Renee was at
her meeting with Philip King

I had the opportunity
to dig into his files.

You know, not a bad security
system he's got by the way.

- Ah, so, you couldn?t get past it?
- Please.

Anyway, this guy's definitely
generating some serious cash,

even utilizing Taelons systems,
but he's clean as a whistle.

Even prepays his taxes
for crying out loud.

But his company is in
bed with the Taelons.

Who knows how deep
his ties with them run.

Yeah, but deep enough to kidnap his own
wife and turn her over to the Taelons?

Maybe.

No, no, no, sure doesn't
look that way to me.

See, the way I see it, all of his dealings
with the Taelons have been at arm's length.

Right? He just doesn't have the
profile of a Taelon collaborating.

I'd have to agree.

It this guy had anything to
do with his wife's death, then

he's the best actor I've ever seen.

Or maybe they gave his
false memories, too.

I gave strict instruction
not to disturb...

Renee.

Philip.

- How did you?..
- Please, don't blame your assistant,

I told him it was urgent that
I speak to you immediately.

What's the matter?

I know it sounds ridiculous, but
I want to ask you to dinner and

I just had to do it right away.

Look, I know it could've waited until
tomorrow. I'm sorry if I'm out of line.

No, no, that?s fine.

I'll check my schedule in the
morning and get back to you.

- Great.
- Okay.

Be careful, Renee, we're not
sure where he's coming from.

I can take care of myself, Liam.

Major, Volunteer Price,
we spoke yesterday.

Yes, I remember.

The Chicago Portal Authority
reported a DNA match on Andrea.

We've pinpointed her location.

Per Agent Sandoval's order I am
notifying all members of the search team.

Where's she?

The Gladstone Hotel in Dean Street.

- Get out or I'll kill you. I swear it.
- I'm not here to hurt you.

Your only chance is to let
me help you. In a few seconds

Volunteers will be swarming
all over this place.

What are you doing here?

Let's save that until
I get you out safely.

Come with me.

Go, use the red fire escape.

Augur.

I'm downloading Emma's files.

She's transmitting. Destroy the room.

Sir, the room will be leveled.

And the Taelon material you're
searching for will be destroyed...

It's impervious to the blast! Now,
do it! I gave you an order, Volunteer!

Squad team, fire in the hole.

We missed her, sir, and we
scanned for any Taelon material.

The results were negative.

She's in the vicinity.

Seal the city, airtight.

Lockdown all public transport and
setup checkpoints for civilian vehicles.

Commence block by block
search immediately.

Can you tell me what
Emma was working on here?

It appears to be some
sort of ancient text.

Well, how ancient are we talking?

Third millennium BC. Into which the Taelons
have encrypted a series of Taelon symbols.

Well, that must've been Ma'el's
doing. Can you read this?

Well, the blue ones are Taelon symbols,
the red ones Sumerian hieroglyphs.

- Two languages interwoven.
- Numbers, actually.

Numbers...

Well, at least that explains
why they needed Emma.

Yeah, but still, why would the Taelons need
a human intellect to solve a math problem?

Well, chaos theory is completely alien
to the Taelons rigid way of thinking.

Emma's mastery over it allows
her to solve the problem.

Right. Meanwhile, Sandoval's
pulling the neck tighter and tighter.

He's bound to find her soon.

Her computer was
destroyed at the hotel.

She needs a new one, if she has
any hope of breaking the code.

Well, she's gonna need a 7900
or better to take this download.

I'll put the word out, see if anyone
is looking for this kind of machine

from one of your street vendors,

to be delivered inside
Sandoval's search zone.

Alright. Did you talk to Renee?

She's got a date with Philip.

She thinks maybe he's got Resistance
sympathies and looking to make contact.

He's looking to make contact, alright.

I hope I didn't embarrass you
the other night with my call.

No, not at all. I think I was
more shocked than anything.

Would you believe me if I told you that
this was the first date I've been on since,

well, it's the first one it 3 years.

Well, don't worry, things
haven't changed much since then.

I'm sure you'll do just fine.

You're very special person, Renee.

Very beautiful.

Thank you.

So, I'm curious, Philip,

how do you feel about the Taelons?

Have you been in business
with them for a few years now?

I wouldn't say I'm
in business with them.

I mean, sure, I incorporate their
technics into some of my products, but

as far as I'm concerned, they're
just another high-tech supplier.

I don't know about you, but in our
company we've taken a lot of heat

from people who think that we shouldn't
be doing business with them at all.

We've had some of
those complaints, but,

I'm not in business to please
special interest groups,

or the Resistance for that matter.

So, I take it you don't
support the Resistance.

I don't associate with
any political group.

I speak for myself.

Okay. So, what do you
say about the Taelons?

They're here.

That's the reality we can't escape.

Do I want them thinking
for me? No, of course not.

But as long as I'm convinced
they respect human sovereignty,

I'm happy to share
my planet with them.

Madame.

What's the matter?

Nothing. I'm sorry.

Can we... can we go
now? Please. I'm sorry.

For someone suffering
an infirmity so serious

that even the most basic of
questioning can cause irreparable harm,

you appear remarkably fit.

Outward appearances can be deceiving.

The only deception is yours, Da'an.

Your ally Mit'gai betrayed you
the moment I truly pressed him.

To what are you referring?

I will not waste time
describing your pact with Mit'gai

to prevent me from interrogating you.

Then what is your purpose here, Zo'or?

What drove the Volunteer Andrea Mazar

to make an attempt on your life
and then flee the mother ship?

I have no explanation.

You have not so much as a theory

as to why a Volunteer would act
with such unprovoked aggression?

None whatsoever.

At this moment I cannot
prove your treachery.

But I will.

- I didn't hear from you.
- Were you supposed to?

When you reveal yourself to
be a member of the Resistance

to someone we don't know, you
damn right you supposed to call.

I didn't reveal anything to Philip,
if that's what you're worried about.

So, was he trying to make contact
with the Resistance or not?

I'm not sure. He said some
things that could ready the way.

I need to see him one
more time to be certain.

I don't think that the
reason you wanna see him again.

Oh, what are you saying, huh?
That I'm interested in this man?

This man who is obviously unavailable?

I don't want you seeing
this guy Philip anymore.

Don't you dare tell me what to do.

What's the matter,
Liam? Are you afraid?

Afraid I'm gonna
endanger the Resistance?

No, Renee. You're way
too smart for that.

The man's wife is alive.

What I'm worried about is you.

Hey, we got a hit on 8300.

Its hard drive is definitely
strong enough to load Emma's data.

Give me the address. I'm on my way.

- Report.
- We're down to a 4 block area, sir.

Apprehension is imminent.

- I'm unarmed.
- I could kill you.

You only chance to
live is to come with me.

Last time wasn't enough to
convince you to trust me?

I don't trust anybody.

We got to get out of here, now.

Let's go.

Why are you trying to help me?

The project you've been working on,

it vital that humanity controls the
information contained in the ancient text.

Humanity or you just want to
sell it to the highest bidder?

Come on, look around.

Do we look like two
bits thieves to you?

No, actually you don't.

There's something
I've got to tell you.

Andrea Mazar...

doesn't exist.

Your real name is Emma King.

What did the Taelons do to me?

They staged your death,
took you to the mother ship.

They implanted you with false
memories to keep you there.

They stole my memories.

I was confused on the mother
ship, I had conflicting memories.

- And that's why you ran?
- No.

I hacked into their systems and
found out they're gonna kill me

after I finished the project.

Escape was my only option.

Emma,

there's something else to consider.

Your husband.

He's alive?

Good evening, Zo'or,
you called for me?

That is correct, Volunteer.

Where are the other bridge personnel?

I excused them.

I wanted our time
together to be private.

You know how tough this
is gotta be for you, Emma?

But you're the only one who
can help us save your life.

What can you tell us about this relic?

It's an extensive research document
sent by Ma'el to the Taelon home world

before he died, but he coded it,

so the Taelons couldn't decipher
it without help form humanity.

But we're not sharing this
information with our enemies.

We'll just have to figure out the way
to access the message without a Taelon.

No.

- It's gotta happen now.
- Why?

Ever since I removed the relic from
the protective environment of the ship

it's been degrading.

If we don't access it now, we could
lose the data inside it forever.

Is it not true that you and the
escaped Volunteer were friends?

We roomed together.

And you can shed no light
on the cause for her betrayal?

Or where we might locate her?

I have told Agent
Sandoval everything I know.

Is that so?

I believe you are currently
outfitted with the phase 3 implant?

Yes, that is correct.

Excellent.

It is time for you to tell
me everything you know.

We have to get to Da'an. He's the
only Taelon we can make a deal with.

Da'an? He's the one who stole
3 years of my life from me.

We should kill him, not
make a deal with him!

Major Kincaid.

I have just had a highly enlightening
conversation with Volunteer Joan Price.

Yes, she's led me to
the escaped Volunteer

whom I have just terminated
per Agent Sandoval's order.

But I did recover the relic.

He's the only chance we've got.

Why was not I kept abreast
of your progress, Major?

I was operating under Agent
Sandoval's supervision.

It's his duty to keep you informed.

Very well. Produce the relic.

You are dismissed.

Halt.

I require your aid.

Ma'el's perverse morality
drove him to secure his message

so that a member of both our
species is required to access it.

Place your hand on the relic

and focus your mind on
nothing but what is before you.

This is the entirety of Ma'el's work.

A primer on the genetic
manipulation of the human species.

Ma'el proved that humanity

is the missing evolutionary link
between the Taelons and the Jaridians.

Without us both your
species will perish.

Once opened, this text will be
revealed one layer at a time.

And only to me and to you.

No other human or
Taelon can gain access.

Well, it looks like you and I will
be working together for a while.

That appears to be the case.

All of your efforts to
rejoin my good graces

have been a pathetic facade.

Your intent to destroy
me has never wavered.

Your destruction is not my aim.

But you have proven

that you cannot be entrusted with
the power of Ma'el's teachings.

Destiny betrays you once again, Da'an.

As I am no now so entrusted.

My actions were proper,
and despite the outcome,

I would act in exactly the same
manner is given the chance again.

You will not be given
such a chance ever!

I grant you one hour to organize
your affairs before your execution.

My imperative compels me
to serve all Companions.

And you expect me to accept that
as the justification for your actions?

- You betrayed me.
- No, I did not!

You never gave me a direct
order with respect to this relic.

Only because I was unaware of
the developments surrounding it.

Would you expect a human
being to take it upon himself

to defy a direct order
from a Taelon? Any Taelon?

No, I would not.

However, form this
point on, Agent Sandoval,

you will place my
interests above all else,

regardless of the
involvement of other Taelons.

Certainly, Zo'or.

Well, at least Zo'or can't
study Ma'el's text without me.

We'll get our information
at the same time he does.

Unless, of course, I can figure out a
way to replicate Zo'or's energy signature.

You made the right
decision, Emma. Trust me.

I hope so.

I didn't know if you still wanted me.

Always, my love, always.

This woman will take
you to a save place,

help you to make a new start.

- I don't know what to say.
- You don't have to say anything.

Just be happy.

Thank you, Renee, for everything.

Sure.

- Thank you.
- Good luck.

Thank you.
