Earth: Final Conflict (1997–2002): Season 3, Episode 12 - Keep Your Enemies Closer - full transcript

The shuttle Liam and Zo'or are in crashes over wilderness, but survive in safety bubbles. The people they meet live off the earth and know nothing of the Taelons. However, Zo'or is injured and missing a Synod meeting on the mother ship.

Previously on Gene Roddenberry's
Earth Final Conflict:

The Taelons' approval has declined.

It is important that we avoid any
situation that might make the Taelons

and myself appear
unfavorable in any way.

Gaining Zo'or's trust only benefits
the Resistance in the long run.

You seem to be enjoying
your little charade.

I'm not the one protecting
Companions day in, day out.

We live up here in this mothership,

looking down upon
your tiny blue planet.

No one likes to be looked
down upon, Agent Sandoval.

You've always encouraged Zo'or
to reach out to humankind.

To him human beings will never
be more than a sub-species.

Now it's time for you to do something.

Why would the Synod summon
me back to the mothership?

This trilateral security conference
has been scheduled for months.

You obviously misunderstood.

Cancel balance of trip. Return
immediately, by order of the Synod.

It will now be impossible
for me to resume my schedule.

You are positive this
recall order is official?

Let's see.

It has your authenticator code.

It has the Synod's eyes only counter
code, it was signed by all 13 members.

12.

13. First Minister Je'Tan,
Second Minister Bal'hor,

- War Minister T'than...
- T'than? T'than signed the order?

Hold on. The guidance detects an unknown
object occupying our reentry point.

We've just been
dumped out of ID space.

It's right in front of us.
We can't change course.

Brace!

Subtitled by
Axarion

They have come to Earth
with the promise of peace.

An alien race called the Taelons.

But, there are those who
resist these Alien Companions.

For the Taelons' true mission,

the secrets they hide

will forever alter our world.

The fate of humanity now relies

on those who dare challenge the future

of Earth.

Are you alright?

Thanks.

You took a big chance
going into that fire.

I couldn't just let
you burn up in there.

What are you staring at?

Am I? I just haven't seen
anyone new in so long.

Space junk.

We collided with it.

Have you seen another crash
bubble like the one I was in?

No.

Can you help me search?

I'm looking for my passenger.

- I'm a Companion Protector.
- You have a companion?

- How many of you are there?
- Just two.

Now you're staring at me again.

I'm sorry, I guess I thought
you're here to find us.

Why? Are you hiding?

Listen, thanks for your help.

Naraina Durrant.

Ah, Naraina, I need to find my
passenger, Zo'or, form the Taelon Synod.

What's a Taelon Synod?

You mean you've never
heard of the Taelons?

A blue light fell over that ridge,
if that's what you're looking for.

At first it was too bright to even
look at, and then it just suddenly died.

Well, that's trouble. The containment
on my ID drive might be ruptured.

This isn't working.
Have you got a global?

A mobile phone.

Technology corrupts
our natural purity.

- Where are we, anyway?
- The Enclave.

That's what we call it anyway.
It's the Sunlight Basin,

between Yellowstone
and the Bighorn range.

So, another words, we're
in the middle of nowhere?

- To us it's everywhere.
- I need to shut down that ID drive.

My father's hunting over
there, what if he gets it first?

Well, I hope not.

The quantum core is
unstable, it'll vaporize,

taking your father and a big
chunk of landscape with it.

Welcome T'than.

Our separation has been
longer than we wished.

Zo'or deems it less than
worthy to welcome me?

He is the sole reason that I have
traveled the Meruva galaxy to Earth.

Zo'or was recalled the time
we received your special order.

- He has been somehow detained.
- Detained? Has he?

I wonder, by chance or by choice?

- How long have you lived here?
- Most of my life.

A decade before the new
millennia, my father led 6 families

to the Enclave to
resume our natural lives.

He calls us the Children of the Earth.

- Oh, you're survivalists?
- Natural purists.

We blend with nature as it
was before mankind altered it.

My father saw this is
our destiny in a vision.

I'll tell you all about it.

- Still not working?
- It's definitely damaged during the crash.

If I can repair it I can have a squadron
of rescue shuttles here in 10 minutes.

My father won't like that, the Children
of the Earth are pure of this world.

I get that, Naraina, and I'm sorry,
but the world won't stay pure of you.

News that Zo'or's missing is
flashing around the planet.

The biggest search in
history is starting.

The beacon on the shuttle
will lead them right here.

Who is this Zo'or?

That's the ID drive.

If it's pulsing like that it won't be
long before it goes critical. Let's hurry.

Greetings, Da'an. I was getting an
update on our memory recovery project

when I heard that Zo'or's
shuttle is missing.

They said his pilot is
Liam Kincaid, is that true?

Yes, it is true.

30 minutes ago they engaged the
inter-dimensional drive in DC,

heading for Beijing.

We had a possible blip
over North America.

Unconfirmed, then nothing.

Zo'or is still present in the
Commonality, but somewhat diminished.

He may be dying or
lost between dimensions.

Should we widen the search
beyond our own resources?

I advise caution before taking
this matter public, Da'an.

The stability of many
world governments,

not to mention the financial markets,

is tied directly to the
stability of the Taelon Synod.

That is wise counsel,
Agent Sandoval. I concur.

Naraina!

She's probably miles away, Byron.

She told me she's going
hunting over toward the Basin.

That's what worries me. Pieces
of this thing fell over there.

I wonder if we should
get any closer, Byron.

- Before we know what it is.
- I know what it is.

It's probably unhealthy.

It's a machine, it's
inherently unhealthy.

We mustn?t allow it
to corrupt the Enclave.

So, we'll dispose of it.

And none of the others
need to ever be tainted.

Get away from the wreck!

Get back!

It's not safe until I shut
down the quantum drive.

He's a pilot, father, listen to him.

What's a quantum drive?

With that pulse, it's unstable.

Ah, this technology. Look
at the chaos it brings.

You're on private land, sir.

- Can I help you?
- Kyle!

I can't stabilize it, but I
think we can both carry it.

We'll get it out and dump it
over that cliff over there.

- Run, get as far away as you can.
- Jason, get Naraina clear.

You okay?

What in the world is that?

Zo'or!

It's Kincaid, hang on,
I'll get you out of there.

But I need to deflect your
energy before I can move you.

What is that, Kyle?
What's making that glow?

Stand quietly, stand quietly now.

When you said it was a
passenger, I thought...

- What is it, Liam?
- This is a Taelon.

It is mechanical, correct?

A technological abomination.

No, it's a bioenergetic intelligent
life-form, very intelligent.

His name is Zo'or.

- Intelligent life-form?
- An extraterrestrial. An alien.

According to your daughter,
you've been out here so long

you've missed a historic event.

Zo'or and a starship full of Taelons
arrived on Earth over four years ago.

That's preposterous!

Zo'or.

It's Liam Kincaid.

This is the day.

The day. They've arrived, Byron.

- We're finally pure.
- Stand quietly, Jason.

What is this? I do not
accept this as a life-form.

Accept it or not, Byron,
the proof lies there.

Major Kincaid.

I recall...

we were confused...

about a message from the Synod.

Please refresh... my...

Come on, he's losing energy.

It's the equivalent to
us bleeding to death.

- What do we need, Liam?
- It's called Taelon bio-slurry.

The debris form the shuttle, it's actually
alive, maybe we can make a kind of bandage.

Don't touch anything, Naraina, it's impure
and unnatural, it's from the outside.

But we can't just let him die.

- Will this work?
- No, it's gotta be in one piece.

You have some in your jacket, Byron.

It's perfect.

Hand me that mesh.

Help me get him up.

Okay, okay, bind him up.

Zo'or.

Can you hear me?

When I touch you I can hardly feel
anything. You're losing a lot of energy.

T'than.

Are you here in your official
capacity as War Minister?

No. I have come to remove
Zo'or as Leader of the Synod.

Word of Zo'or's slow and
uneven progress here on Earth

has travelled to every Taelon outpost.

I believe that I can convince the
entire Synod to back my proposal.

And that proposal is?

To make you new Synod Leader.

The Synod must still
approve you, Da'an.

But if it is your will, I
will vigorously support you.

Everyone, gather! We have visitors.

Have you seen anything? What is it?

Stand quietly now.

All your questions will
be answered in due course.

- We found a spaceship.
- She's not exaggerating.

We found a spacecraft. It was
flying over the Basin and crashed.

This creature was on board.

It's called the Taelon.

It's an alien.

These are the Children of
the Earth, Major Kincaid.

These are my friends
and fellow believers

that this life is the
one and only pure life.

My friends,

today we may have reached zenith

for which we all been striving.

I must search for
the natural way of it.

Could we at least get
him under some shelter?

You can use my home, he'll
be comfortable up there.

Thank you.

This is the day.

It's true.

I'm not certain it's true.

It may all be an elaborate
ruse, a deception.

That's why we came here, isn't it?

To allude the deceptions and
the sham of the artificial world.

I'm going to fast and seek this
truth, but I don't know it yet.

We must give Byron time to seek
inwardly, he never failed us.

Whatever you say, but right
now we need to get help.

- How far are we from civilization?
- This ? civilization.

You mean how far are you from chaos.

I mean how far is a nearest
town or ranch, or road?

- 50 miles.
- 50 to a ranch.

Town of Cody is more than 80 miles.

Then, I guess I've got a long
ride. I need to borrow a horse.

That would be no problem.

But without one of us to show you
the way, you'd be hopelessly lost.

We'll discuss that as soon as I've
had time for clear vision of the truth.

The Taelon needs urgent medical care,
not some herbs or some folk medicine.

I need to take him to his mother ship.

He's not gonna listen to
you. You're from the outside.

Durrant, please. If I walk out of here,
he'll be dead by the time I get back.

Durrant, I'm a major in the US army.

Under international law you are required
to give me any and all assistance.

The Children of the Earth live
by a much older law, Major.

Byron.

I need to be by myself
and need some quiet, Kyle.

Fine, but listen for a moment.

I can ride to Cody.

No.

If I take a fresh pair of
horses, I can be there in a day.

And get that Taelon some help.

No! The world has forgotten
us, Kyle. That?s why we're here.

You tell them where we are,
they'll never leave us alone.

I don't understand you.

This is precisely what you foretold.

- Right now in may cabin that alien...
- We don't know what is in your cabin.

But I am convinced that...

if this is the day we were
waiting for, I would know,

in here. Don't go anywhere, Kyle!

If this is the star savior,

he's not going to appear
to us simply to die.

I'm sorry, I'm trying to let him rest.

Liam, it's Naraina.
I've brought some food.

You have to eat something.

Come on in.

I can't believe I'm here with
a being from another world.

Naraina, can you tell me about
your father and his vision?

What exactly poisoned
him on technology?

My mother.

She died in a plane crash.

I'm sorry.

I was only two.

After that he went
through a period of...

meditation and became convinced
that her death was a symptom of a

world gone crazy for technology.

He also had visions
of a day of purity.

The arrival of what
he called star saviors.

The premonition came true.

I don't think he ever
expect that to happen.

As long as he was the one predicting
the future, he was special.

As long as we're here in
the Enclave, everyone...

looks to him for guidance and wisdom.

You sound less than happy about that.

Are you tired of being
out here in the wilderness?

No, I love here.

I don't wanna go back.
Some do, but I don't.

Has anyone ever left?

Only three people.

And your father didn't
object to them leaving?

My father wouldn't hold
us against our will.

We're not his prisoners.

Then, he'll listen to reason
and let me get Zo'or out of here

so I could save him.

Agent Ronald Sandoval,
we have not met.

I am T'than, Taelon War Minister.

I should have introduced myself,
but events have superseded...

a fitting welcome.

It is ironic that my presence seems
destined to pretend disaster for Zo'or.

I'm in law enforcement, T'than,
I leave portents to the mystics.

Zo'or's misadventure simply anticipated
his downfall by another means.

Fall, disaster.

Strong words.

I have been conducting Taelon
diplomacy for too many centuries

to be concerned with strong words.

And you have been Zo'or's
Protector now for many months.

By all accounts,
you've been much more.

Zo'or turned responsibility for
terrestrial security over to me.

Zo'or's sphere of influence
in unravelling, Agent Sandoval.

It is wise to know when
to move out of harm's way,

and with whom you may find shelter.

I've been seeking the truth
tonight, I believe I found it.

I knew you would.

I might have had an insight myself.

Tell me.

Don you remember what happened
in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947?

The famous incident?

I read about in your
books, I saw the photos.

Something fell out of the
sky and left metallic debris.

They say it was embossed
with a peculiar alphabet.

- Just like we found.
- I remember.

Go on.

They also say that bodies
were found in the wreckage.

A nurse even made a sketch. Blue
or gray in color, large oval heads.

Just like the Taelon.

What does that tell you?

It's all part of the confusion
and lies we left behind.

I am more convinced than ever

that we have to protect
our natural purity,

and wait for a clarity.

The quality I admire most in you

is your ability to understand
what needs to be done.

I'm afraid Kyle and...

the people that think like him...

might be arrogant enough to...

believe they are more
important than the rest of us.

Three times I've made the sacrifice
for the Children of the Earth.

Now it's time for you to show
your devotion to our cause.

I know you won't fail me.

He never lets anyone leave.

At 08:49 this evening the Taelon
press office confirmed reports

that shuttlecraft carrying Zo'or, the
Leader of the Taelon Synod, has disappeared.

We canceled our normal
programing to stay with this.

They couldn't keep this
story bottled up forever.

More like a controlled leak.

From what they tell me, they're
pretty much run out of possibilities.

All you need is to get
next to a good source.

We can't survive on their
press handouts, this is Liam.

I know.

Look, I'm going crazy up here waiting.

I'll use the portal and be
down there in 10 minutes.

Maybe between us we
can think of something.

T'than.

You haven't said anything
for hours, I thought...

- Well, I was worried that you?d already...
- Not yet, but soon.

When neural pathways in the
human body cease to be energized,

you are dead.

As with us.

I remember we were
talking about T'than.

Why was that?

He signed the order from the Synod
recalling you to the mother ship.

I've never heard of him.

My bitterest enemy.

T'than contested my appointment
to the Earth legation.

I must assume he has some
further problems for me.

But he may be denied
the pleasure of them.

On your planet...

the summer heat causes
atmospheric electrical discharges.

Lightening.

Yes.

That must be like a final thought.

Like lightning over the horizon.

A brilliant flash...

then gone forever.

I'll think of something
before that happens, Zo'or.

We need a source of energy, but...

so far all I found is this.

That will not suffice.

But we do have one
other energy source.

You mean yourself?

No, you're too weak.

- I can't do that to you.
- We have no choice.

I find it hard to believe
that a human would rescue me.

Although, you have been loyal,
you are ultimately a human being.

You could easily let me die.

If you were my enemy.

If you were my enemy, you would
be the enemy of all Taelons.

I would leave you to
die without hesitation.

Why won't you help me?

Byron is searching for the truth.

Nonsense.

Durrant doesn't cares about the truth.

All he cares about is
keeping you all here.

- You're out of your mind, brother.
- Am I, Jason?

Why don't you give the rest of
the Children of the Earth here

a glimpse under the
floor in Durrant's home?

How is that Taelon?

We were talking a little
while ago, but now he's in a...

kind of coma, I don't
think he has long.

Then you couldn't have saved him
even if you'd left this afternoon.

Think saving Zo'or's life
would?ve ruined your privacy?

You have no idea what letting him
die is gonna do to the neighborhood.

The White House has issued a
statement of mourning and urged calm.

Again, repeating the news we
first heard just 20 minutes,

although, his remains have
not yet been recovered,

Zo'or is assumed to be dead.

The news hit the overseas stock
market hard causing panic selling,

and trading has been suspended...

I think I found them. And not in some
ID limbo, but right here on Earth.

- Are they alive?
- One thing at a time.

Now, what would bring down a
shuttle with time for distress burst?

See, the only thing I could come
up with was a supersonic collision.

I'm not hearing the good part yet.

Well, here it is. At 09:40 today,
an old rocket booster from 1989

was scheduled to come
home to roost right here.

Now, if they hit that thing,

then they fell somewhere
inside this circle.

My father won't give him any help.

He's afraid.

He's afraid of he'll
stand up to a new world.

He's not a wise leader anymore.

I don't recognize him anymore.

He'll never let us leave, Naraina.

You know that.

I don't know anything anymore.

All I know is that I can't let
another being die just to...

satisfy my father's ego.

From what Kincaid says, the
outside will hold us responsible.

What more evidence do we
need that their impurity

has polluted their powers of reason?
It's gone from chaos to madness out there.

I will take personal responsibility.

I should have known
Naraina would be beguiled.

It was Kyle Crowe.

He's the one who's corrupted
her mind with visions of outside.

Possibly.

And now she's part of
that virulent threat.

I know you're wondering
why I have these weapons.

It was part of a cynical suspicion
and impurity I could never cleanse.

I knew one day we'd need
machines to fight machines.

So, I traded with some
dealers in Cody for them.

That's my sin.

We'll destroy them.

When we're done.

Protect us from our enemies.

Then, we'll declare the new utopia.

Zo'or's an
energy-based life-form.

I'm hoping he has enough energy
to power up the basic circuits

to give us enough thrust
to get as far as Cody.

Naraina, I don't know how
to say this any other way,

but your father's a
very dangerous man.

I want you and Kyle to come with me.

I don't want to go.

It's not safe for you, for any
of you as long as he's in control.

We've known that for a while.

My father had the right idea.
Kyle and I still believe in it.

We're gonna make this
our paradise again.

If you're gonna stay, then you
and Kyle have to take control.

- We know.
- There's somebody coming.

Go. I'll do what I can
to help you make it.

- What are you doing, Naraina?
- Following my conscience.

Letting him die doesn't change things.

They're gonna come back and
destroy everything we've done?

No, you've already
destroyed it, Durrant.

Good luck.

Thank you.

Major...

- I'm going numb with no vision.
- If it takes off, shoot it down.

It's not your paradise
anymore. You don't deserve it.

It's ours.

How's Zo'or?

We had to drain all but a few sparks
of his energy to get him out of there.

Fortunately, the energy state
has not became subatomic.

In time, he can be
fully reconstituted.

By all accounts, you endured
significant danger to save Zo'or.

- I couldn't just leave him there.
- You perceive him to be your enemy.

A Taelon would make
a simple calculation.

The greater good is best served
by letting your enemy perish.

Zo'or told me the same thing.

But humans have an old saying:

"Keep your friends close,"

"but keep your enemies closer".

Curious.

The wisdom of that must
get lost in translation.
