The Great Man-Eating Tree

I'm too scared to fell
the cursed tree.

They say he who does
will be cursed for three generations.

It is the one thing I won't touch.

A cursed tree,
is it? It's huge.

Big brother, how old would
you say it is?

2,000 years. It's not
only a tree any more.

Who needs their stupid fortress!

Because those foolish samurai
would build a big fort here,

the mountain's
been stripped bare!

And now they'd have us cut down
this cursed tree as well?

It's unthinkable!

With this many trees felled,
this mountain is finished.

It won't be my
fault when they're cursed!

Are you sluggards
still not done?

Chop that tree down!

Hey, what's taking you? Well?

Hurry up! Our lord commands it!

Shall I lend a hand?

Wh-Wh-Who are you?

This is no ordinary tree.

It's been possessed
by a death spirit.

I'm offering to slay it for you.

A death spirit has possessed it?

That's a preposterous
bit of superstition!

Your worthless eyes
simply can't see them.

Hey, big brother, may I
suggest something?

Why not leave this
one to the great Dororo?

If this tree is the monster,
I can handle it alone.

No need for you to do anything.

You can't handle it. Don't.

Hah! What are you saying!

It's just a silly tree spirit!

Don't, Dororo. Stop it.

The great Dororo must destroy
the monster himself occasionally.

What's this rope for?

What do you think
you're doing, Dororo?

Big brother, what is that?

Run away!

Come out! Show
yourself, devil!

There you are...

Ah, I can't pull it out.

Ah! Big brother! Behind you!

Curse it!

Dororo!

Ouch, that hurt.

This is awful! Big brother will be swallowed!

Swallowed?

Sir, lend me
this axe a minute!

Big brother! Big brother!

Big brother!

Big brother! What happened?!

Did it eat you?

Big brother!

Look, nothing's happening.

Yes, it's quiet and peaceful.

It doesn't seem cursed at all.

It was merely silly
superstition.

Come on, stop dawdling
and fell that tree.

Go on, hurry up!

No! I won't let
you touch it!

Big brother... My brother is
trapped inside!

What, boy? Are you sure you
weren't dreaming or something?

Hah! Alas, it was no dream!

Begone!

Stop! You'll cut big brother too!

Stop!

What an enormous tree.

Curse it all... These
ropes are so tough...

Hey, forget your brother or
whoever he was and get out of here.

Oh, no. It's none
of your business.

But what happened
to the possessed tree?

We had some trouble hauling
that heavy thing down to the valley.

It's tied up in the
river down there now.

They'll float it downstream
tomorrow morning.

Hey, Nota, let's go
take the cursed tree!

You're going to
steal that huge tree?

That's right! I'm
the great Dororo!

If I set my mind to it, I
could steal a whole mountain!

Hahah, you think
big. I like that, squirt.

I like big ideas.

But still, why do you
want to take it?

My big brother's inside it.

The demon may have
consumed him by now though.

But, you know, I'd at least
like to collect his bones.

Oh?

Hey! I hear noises from in
there! He must still be alive!

What?

Nota! You're too
noisy! Pipe down!

This is important. It could
decide whether big brother lives or dies!

What? Sir! Sir!

Curse it...! Ah!

Curse it all...

Both big brother and the old man...

I swear I'll avenge
the two of you.

Now, float the cursed
tree down the river.

If we use that tree for our fortress,
it will stand strong and last long!

Now, cut it adrift!

It's finally here!
Come on, Nota!

Here it comes.

Curse you, fiend. I'll
show you what I can do.

No good, is it?

This is so frustrating! It's just a
tree monster but I can do nothing to it!

Rocks!

It split!

Ah! it's a shoal!

Oh, Nota.

Sir! How?

Oh, I'm glad you're
awake now, boy.

Weren't you consumed by the tree, sir?

What are you doing here?

It seems like I got out
because you split it with that axe.

Then maybe big brother can too.

Big brother!

Big brother! Are you okay, big brother? You haven't
been digested or anything?

It's big brother's arm!

Curse it all! It took big brother and left
nothing but an arm behind?

Tch, it's come out.

I'll show no mercy.

Ow! Save me, big brother!

Dororo!

Ah! Big brother!

I made it in time.

Big brother, you're not a ghost, are you?

Take a good look. It's me.

That's...!

You devil, you've
shown your true form at last!

It didn't realise I
could pull off my arm.

Though I did fall off the
cliff and I was knocked out.

So that's what happened!
I was sure you'd been eaten!

Dororo, hurl a
flame into its mouth!

Right away!

Hah! Take that, you monster!

Dororo! Be careful!
It's not finished yet!

Dororo! That way leads to
the fortress and it's a dead end!

Oh, no! It's a dead end!

Curse it!

Whew, it worked.

What are you doing, you
monster? I'm over here!

Over here, you big dumb monster!

Worthless soldiers. Looks like
they left this here in their rush to flee.

What now, demon?

Looks like you can't
breathe fire any more!

Curse it...

Cutting and stabbing
this thing has no effect.

I need to find its core!

That's your weakness, isn't it?

Big brother, it burst into flames.

It turned back into
an ordinary tree.

The monster is dead.

Big brother, now that I think of
it, I can pity the monster.

If they'd not built the fortress,
it would have cursed no-one.

Well, this worked
out for the best.

It's all been burned to ashes.

They won't be able to build a
fort here for a good long time.

Now, next week's story is about
a demon called Shike Nyuudou.

Shike Nyuudou is an
interesting name, isn't it?

It's a demon formed of
mice, moles, otters and toads.

It can swim and
burrow underground!

It takes advantage
of all four animals' traits.

Like a tank from the future, that
operates on land and in the water!

You may think it's over there, but
suddenly it's back over here.

It uses guerrilla tactics,
popping up then disappearing,

so big brother had quite a
bit of trouble with it.

But, at the old temple
where we finally cornered it,

we learned the sad origin
of Shike Nyuudou.

What is that sad story?

See you next week for
The Scroll of Shike Nyuudou.

Look forward to it!
