Doctor Who Confidential (2005–2011): Season 2, Episode 6 - From Zero to Hero - full transcript

GATISS: Since the Doctor
first appeared on the scene,

the life of Mickey Smith
has really been a bit rubbish.

But don't take the mickey
because he's no longer an idiot.

There's gotta be
something, there's got to be.

Oh, yes.

Whoo!

GATISS: Doctor Who Confidential
goes exclusively backstage

to take an in-depth look
at this man's journey from zero to hero.

He's really embracing
this sort of hero thing.

He does become one of
the team, he really does.

Good luck.

(CREW CHATTERING)

And action!

It's about 9:00, 9:30,
and we're just about to start.

It's when Mickey's brought in by the troops
and meets Ricky for the first time.

Russell had told me quite early on
that I'd be playing the two parts

so I was really looking forward to it.

And when I read them, I was like,
"Oh, my God, this is great."

And having the scenes with yourself,
you just immediately start practising.

You know, trying to get it right. So,
yeah, I was well excited about doing that.

What the hell are you doing?

What are you doing there?

What am I doing here?

What am I doing there?

I can explain.

This is our first visit to that marvellous
science fiction device, the parallel world.

Which we didn't invent,
it's a good old classic.

It is the convention of parallel world stories
that you will take your established characters

and see them and get a slightly
different perspective on them.

Ricky looks very different from Mickey.

In episode 6 you discover,
actually, they're not so far apart.

I don't know how much of Mickey's
ultimate story arc Russell had in mind

when he wrote episode 1 of series one.

He's an alien. He's a thing.

In Rose, in the first episode,
he was a gibbering fool, really.

(LOSER PLAYING)

(ALIEN SQUEALING)

P-P-P-Pizza!

Babe? Sugar?

-You get sports channels?
-Yes, I get the football.

Don't read my email!

-Hey, here's my woman! Get off.
-Oh, shut up.

Doctor!

151, take 1. Stand by, then.

It's Mickey-saves-the-day today, actually.

The Cyberman comes to life,
we think it's just a suit,

but we press a button that activates it and
we turn around and it's coming after us.

Up until this point, he's still the Mickey
that you know and love, or know and hate,

depending on your view, but...

And from that moment
on, he's sort of in control.

And he's really this, sort of, changed person
and, I guess, the hero that he becomes.

WOMAN: And action!

Not bad work.

It's moving!

You said it was dead!

A robot suit's still a
good robot. Wait a minute.

Hey, Cyberman. Over here.

Come on, you brainless lump of metal.

Come and have a go.

I'm kind of thinking now maybe the Doctor knew,
always knew, that Mickey had that in him anyway.

Little by little, he kind of gets on board
and finds that...

Um, who would have thought it but, actually,
he's got a bit of a flair for it himself.

Who'd blow up a whole
planet just to get a Lift?

What kind of rubbish were they?

Who the hell are you?

Faster!

Mickey, hello.

I'm not having that.

I'm not having you just
give up now, no way.

I think at the end of season one when
Mickey helps Rose get back to the Doctor

to fight the Daleks, it's him saying,
""You know what,

"if you want to go and
die to save this guy,"

"because I love you so much,
I have no choice but to help you do it."

-Keep going!
-Give me some more!

Rose!

There's that very lovely moment
when he first asks to join the Tardis.

Can I come?

'Cause I'm not the tin dog
and I wanna see what's out there.

And the look on Rose's
face is absolutely brilliant.

Bless her, and we're all like this,
it's a very human reaction.

She doesn't want him there. He's like...
He's a spare part.

Rose and the Doctor is, you know,
an exclusive relationship,

and Rose is very tetchy
about letting people into that.

-Rose, is that okay?
-No, great.

Why not?

She wants to be
the Doctor's companion, you know.

She wants to be the girl that saves
the world and understands humanity.

And suddenly someone else is
getting in on the game and it's annoying.

There's a sense that the Doctor
has almost seen him as bit of a disciple.

At the end of episode 3,

even when Rose is saying,
"No, I don't want this to happen,"

the Doctor says, "No, come on, let's go.
Your time has come."

Now she's going to have to divide her time

and show Mickey a bit of loving
and all she wants is the Doctor.

She's such a minx, Rose.

Brilliant! I got a
spaceship on my first go.

I am not going back in there.

(SCREECHES)

Oh, mate. The missus and the ex.
Welcome to every man's worst nightmare.

Mickey Smith, meet the universe.

It's so realistic!

Now you're getting it.

Mickey!

Are you looking at me?

He gets a couple of trips in the Tardis and
then it's almost like he meets his destiny.

Ricky seeing Mickey's death,
it's really strangely horrific.

Come on!

(FOOTSTEPS CLOMPING)

Fall.

Of course, he decides that not only
is he going to make a difference,

but he's going to stay there and continue
the fight when the Doctor and Rose leave.

And that's what he does. He stays.

It sort of balances out 'cause this
world lost its Ricky, but there's me.

But you can't stay.

PIPER: I think she
finds that heartbreaking.

And it's a moment of realisation

when she realised just how much
she loves and cherishes Mickey.

It's a real wake-up call for Rose.

She's desperately sad
and it's a really touching moment

and it's really quite heartbreaking.

CLARKE: I'm here in a van
for scene 83 of episode 6.

And it's Mickey's last, last scene,
and it's very, very sad.

But also very happy because
Mickey's a new man and he's changed.

WOMAN: And action.

Doctor Who has definitely been
one of the greatest things I've ever done.

It's just the most amazing group of people

that have just put together
the most amazing show.

We've tried our hardest to make it special.

And you couldn't ask to be
on a better show really.

WOMAN: Okay.

MAN: So, Andrew, that's a good position
for you. So just make yourself comfortable.

Noel, just bear in mind where we are. So
you may need to just lean forward that much.

Not...

WOMAN: Okay, for rehearsal, then.

I know it's not easy
with my face looking exactly like Ricky,

but I'm a different man,
I'm not replacing him.

But we can remember him
by fighting in his name.

With all those cyber factories out there,
do you think there'd be one in Paris?

Yeah.

Then let's go and liberate Paris.

What, you and me? In a van?

There's nothing wrong with a van.

I once saved the universe
with a big yellow truck.

CLARKE: Life for Mickey Smith, once
the Doctor and Rose go on parallel world,

is Mickey Smith is going to go
around Europe, around the world,

and he's going to fight these things
until they're all gone.

He's happy about doing it
because he's a changed man.
