Deception (2013): Season 1, Episode 11 - I'll Start with the Hillbilly - full transcript

Edward makes a tough decision regarding his wife's condition and seeks revenge. Vivian's murder case is reopened as new information comes out, and the identity of her murderer is revealed.

Vivian Bowers was found dead

in a motel room early this morning.

So you think someone from the family

has something to do with it?

You go in wearing a wire.

- Are we gonna do this again?
- Yes, we are.

Okay, I'm in.

To the edge of doom.

I slept with Julian.

I am the only witness to your first crime.

I loved Catherine.

You also loved her $2 billion.

Really came at an opportune time too.

I'm not leaving my family.

Start a new life, Wyatt.

- I'm getting on a plane.
- No. Why?

[Elevator bell dings] [Silenced gunshot]

I want her to look me in the eye

and confess to killing Vivian.

You killed my sister!

- Julian!
- [Gunshots]

Dave!

- She's dead?
- Yup.

If Audrey killed my daughter,
I'd want her dead too.

It's just scary.

What are you scared of, Vivian?

Just say it.

The thing that I'm most afraid of

is telling Haverstock that it's over.

Haverstock knew about Ben, about their kid.

He knew that Vivian was
in love with somebody else.

I don't care.

Maybe Haverstock killed Vivian

because he knew that she
was gonna leave him for Ben.

You just closed a career
case, you lucky bastard.

Murder, betrayal, scandal,
and in the end, redemption.

It's a saga that has
gripped the imagination

of the entire country.

How are you all coping?

Just trying to heal.

It's the first time either
of you have gone on the record

to discuss the recent string of events.

Why now?

Meredith, we felt it was time

to tell our side of the story.

I mean, our family would like nothing more

than to pick up the pieces and move on.

Both your daughter and son

were willing to publicly
blow the whistle on you.

Audrey Cruz, the woman
who had... Vivian murdered,

was a former employee.

How do you deal with
that level of betrayal?

I can't begin to explain why
Audrey Cruz did what she did.

As to the first part of your question,

my children were driven to do
what they thought was right.

And I... I can't be
angry with them for that.

What are we still doing here, Joanna?

I need to get back to my routine,

and I'm not leaving you here.

The case isn't solved.

Audrey Cruz didn't kill Vivian.

Why do you have to be responsible for this?

This is dangerous.

Because everybody else let her down.

You know what I think sometimes?

What if I had let her run away

17 years ago when she was pregnant?

What if I hadn't ratted her out to her dad

like the prissy little
"A" student that I was?

She would have had a whole different life.

- Honey, no.
- Maybe she wouldn't be dead.

But she is,

so the only thing left for me to do now

is to find out who really did this to her.

Just give me two days.

Can you do that?

Yes.

[Machine beeping]

Eddie, she... she signed
an advance directive.

You know what she wanted.

I know that.

She has no brain function.

Julian, he knows.

He's not ready.

We don't have to do
anything until you are ready.

I just want you to make sure
you understand where we are.

I'm keenly aware of where we are.

How's Edward?

Shut down, walled off, you know.

The same, only worse.

Yeah.

Hey, move in with me.

[Chuckles] What?

Can't we just go on a date?

Everyone's insane,

or a liar, or worse.

Will you think about it?

Okay.

[Sighs] I will.

[Shutter snaps]

Perfect. Hold that.

All right, I think we got what we need.

- All right.
- Congrats again on the case.

- Thanks.
- So the dinner starts at 8:00,

but Bloomberg wants to grab
a drink with you beforehand.

Wow. Corner office with a view?

Big dinner being held in your honor.

Looks like you've arrived.

Can we speak in private?

Joanna, what are you doing here?

I'm trying to get you to do your job.

I am doing my job.

Well, it looked to me like you
were getting your picture taken.

I was.

Now I'm gonna go find the person

that shot Edward's wife, and then

I'm gonna go get a sandwich.

Need to know the rest of my schedule?

No, I wanna find out
who really killed Vivian

because it wasn't Audrey.

She didn't confess.

Plus, she needed Vivian
alive for her plan to work.

I'm telling you, Will,

we should be looking at Haverstock.

Your Captain is expecting you at work

in San Francisco on Monday morning, okay?

I suggest you don't get fired over this,

unless you wanna marry your rich boyfriend,

which... God knows what
you're planning to do,

but whatever it is, do it somewhere else.

I'm busy.

Go talk to Gabe and fill
out your exit paperwork.

[Sniffles]

Senator Haverstock.

Can I talk to you for a minute?

- Joanna, hello.
- Hi.

I'll meet you at the thing.

[Sighs]

I know this is gonna seem kind of weird,

but, um, I'm here as a friend of Vivian's.

I know that the police
and everyone are saying

that the case is closed,
but there's something

that just doesn't make sense to me.

Oh?

What, are you an amateur sleuth?

No, no, I know that you guys were close,

and you guys were seeing
each other on and off

for all these years, and I just...

- Really?
- [Laughs]

What else do you know?

I think the police are
afraid to question you

because you're a senator.

As Vivian's friend, I just wanted to know,

where were you the night
that she was murdered?

That was fantastic.

You know, I actually almost forgot

I already know you're a cop.

How did you know?

I am not at liberty to say.

But you keep watching MSNBC.

I think you're gonna like this.

Let me ask you something.

Are you actually affiliated

with some law enforcement
agency at this point?

[Gasps] Have you gone rogue?

You know, Vivian was afraid of you.

She said that she was afraid

of what you might do if she left.

So you think I killed
Vivian in some jealous rage?

Well, I don't know. I
mean, it crossed my mind.

That did not occur.

I knew that Vivian was going to run away

with Ben Preswick, and
I knew she would be back.

She always came back.

Joanna, girls like that
don't end up with nice guys.

They end up with guys like me, Detective.

You're in your 30s.
Pick up on some patterns.

Answer the question.

Where were you the night Vivian was killed?

You're really gonna ask me that?

I just did.

You know who you're talking to?

Yeah, the guy who raped my best friend.

Where were you?

I was, um...

at the White House having dinner

with the President of the United States.

Take that, Detective.

Okay. Until what time?

Slept like a baby in the Lincoln bedroom.

Now, you can try, but
you cannot put this on me.

I would have died for her.

Samantha's brain-dead.

Edward doesn't need a smoked ham.

Well, darling, I'm at a loss.
Edward's not speaking to us.

In times like these,
it's just what people do.

You know what people don't do?

They don't go to some $1,000-a-plate soirée

when their son is
sitting in a hospital room

watching his wife fight for her life.

We owe Agent Moreno a huge debt.

- It's expected.
- It's obscene.

Darling, why don't you
go get a place in line?

- I'll finish up here.
- Why?

'Cause I'm asking you to.

All right. Whatever you say, mom.

Jesus.

What are you doing?

Keeping an eye on my girl.

Oh, maybe I'm a romantic,

but I keep thinking we can
pick up where we left off.

I'm not your girl, and I
don't like what you're doing.

Is it inconvenient for you to see me?

- Yes.
- Make you uncomfortable?

You know what's really uncomfortable?

20 years inside.

Wyatt, why don't you
just tell me what you want

so I can give it to you,

and you can get the hell out of here

and open up an army surplus store,

or a pawn shop, or whatever
your stupid white trash dream is?

I want to dismantle
your life piece by piece

until there's nothing left of it.

Oh, "dismantle."

That's a big word for a dumb redneck.

Did you finish seventh grade in prison?

All right, peace.

Oh, does Robert know that
you used to turn tricks

to make ends meet?

I bet ya cute little Mia
ends up just like you.

- Get away from me!
- What do you got?

Stop it! I've had enough!

Not my family!

Don't touch her.

You don't touch her, you understand?

You do not touch her.

Hey, you bitch!

Get out of my life!

Leave my family alone!

Please get off of me! Get out of my way!

- What are you doing?
- Gabe, we missed something.

It wasn't Audrey. It
just doesn't make sense.

These people needed to be re-interviewed.

Some of these people, you
don't even have last names on.

Time of death was midnight,

and her body wasn't found
till 10:00 A.M. the next day.

If we had a box full of stellar witnesses,

we wouldn't have needed to
fly you in to go undercover.

Yeah, but somebody had
to have seen something.

You wanna know who saw something

at that disgusting motel?

This lady saw a bunch of man junk.

She's a strung-out hooker.

This guy, committed to county,

says he's got a bunch of cockroaches

crawling under his skin.

Sound witness.

And this guy, crackhead dumpster diver,

all he wanted to talk about
was his brand-new suitcase.

So there you have it.
Knee-deep in whack jobs.

And look at this.

This manager's statement
said there was a guy

with a "carpe diem" tattoo.

So?

So... [Sighs]

This is the same guy that gave Mia heroin.

I have his I.D. And his address.

- Where you going?
- Where do you think?

Wait, no, Joanna. Joanna!

Edward.

How are you?

Dumb question.

I, um...

[Sighs]

So sorry, Edward.

Thank you.

Can we please put that past behind us

and let me help you?

- I don't need any help.
- Look.

I have been where you are right now.

When your mother died, I
was left with three children.

- Please...
- Dad.

Let... look. Just come back to us.

You can't do this alone.

Let's not do this anymore.

I think we said it all last time.

I'm the bad guy.

And you're... whatever you think you are.

[Knock at door]

[Door opens]

Remember me?

- Don't...
- She's 16!

And you're disgusting.

I'm keeping this, pervert.

If you try anything or you
touch another young girl,

I know where you live.

Oh, um, come on in.

My... my wife's not here.

- Uh, let me just...
- Daddy, who is it?

Just put on some pants.

I put on Transformers, so they won't move

for, like, an hour, but I have
a conference call in 20, so...

Wife and kids and a job.

How does that happen?

I have a lot of balls in the air,

and that's what Adderall's for.

Vivian got to the motel around...

a little before 10:00 P.M.?

Yeah, and she was pretty banged up.

She had a weird bruise, so I just...

Daddy, can I have an English muffin?

Yeah, uh, sweetie, just
go back to the movie.

- I'll bring it in to you.
- I'm really hungry.

Can I please have it now?

Sweetie, I will bring it in to you.

Okay, fine.

[Sighs]

I offered her a little
"H," thinking it might help.

- Then what?
- Then she went to her room.

And I thought after she got high,

she might be up for some fun,

but she just left all of a sudden.

- What do you mean she left?
- Yeah, with my drugs.

She said, "this was a mistake."

And, you know, I stuck
around hoping she'd come back,

but, you know, no such luck.

Are you sure about that?

Because maybe you just missed her.

No, I was in the room next door.

I... I was totally wired. I kept checking.

Finally, I, you know, just gave up.

And what... what time was that?

3:00? Uh, 3:30?

See, that can't be right
because the coroner's office

placed Vivian's time
of death at midnight...

unless she didn't die at the hotel.

I know it looks bad,
but it was self-defense.

What about Vivian and Ben?

I couldn't risk him exposing me.

Is that why you killed my sister?

This whole thing got out of hand.

No one was supposed to die.

How many people did you kill?

I couldn't risk him exposing me.

Is that why you killed my sister?

This whole thing got out of hand.

- No one was...
- Sir.

They picked up a Russian.

Connected, and fits the description

of the one who shot Samantha Bowers.

[Sighs]

Get me Edward Bowers.

How you doin', man? Any
changes with Samantha?

No.

I'm sorry,

but I think we may have caught a break.

We picked up a guy who
matches the description

of the man we think shot your wife.

Tell me if you recognize anyone.

He's not there.

- Take another look.
- He's not here.

What are you doing?

Look, I know you're in
a rough spot right now,

but don't make it worse.

- You're a good guy.
- Look, we're not friends.

So don't tell me what kind of guy I am.

Sorry, I haven't slept,

but he's not there.

Thank you for everything you're doing.

[Sighs]

[Laughs] Ooh, what is going on here?

Sorry, man, we called you in

'cause you still had
that flag on Wyatt Scott.

The uni on sight said they
almost had to tase Sofia's ass.

- [Laughs]
- They're both here.

Do you wanna talk to 'em?

Yeah, let's start with the hillbilly.

Why not?

- Wyatt.
- Hey.

[Door closes] I'm
Special Agent Will Moreno.

- I was defending myself.
- Right.

Well, why was she so angry?

I guess she wasn't happy to see me.

I know Sofia was paying Teo Agrasar

to keep you safe while you were locked up.

My question is:

why attack you when you finally get out?

She didn't want me to get out.

She planted heroin in my pocket

just to keep me locked up inside.

Heroin?

Sofia Bowers just gets heroin?

She's very resourceful,

especially when she's desperate.

And why is she desperate?

She and I go way back,

all the way back to...

well, stuff that she doesn't
want anybody to know about.

You murdered her father.

Uh-huh.

That's the version we settled on.

Is that different from
what actually happened?

Why don't you ask Sofia?

I just had a really interesting
conversation with Wyatt.

Seems like things are pretty complicated

between you two, huh?

Don't you have a party to go to?

Yes, my dinner.

- Are you coming?
- Of course.

We're so grateful.

It's the right thing to do.

Hey, uh, where were you
when your dad was murdered?

I don't recall.

Seems like something like
that would stay with a person.

You got pretty violent when
you saw Wyatt today, huh?

Wyatt's a dangerous man.

Left that place all kinds
of post-apocalyptic...

Then I'll buy the store,

and we'll consider the matter closed.

Perhaps you'd like a country ham

for all your hard work.

Country ham. I'll take it.

But before you send it over,
I just wanna know one thing.

Did Vivian know about you and Wyatt?

You ask me one more question

besides would I like a diet Pepsi,

I'm calling my lawyer.

Just humor me for a second, all right?

What if Sofia killed her dad?

I can maybe buy that she
killed her abusive dad, maybe.

But why kill Vivian?

What if Vivian knew about Wyatt?

Threatened to tell people?

I mean, Sofia would do
anything to keep Robert

from finding out about it.

Plus, Vivian was gonna take me away.

That's plenty of motive, man.

Maybe Joanna's right.

We don't know if Vivian knew about Wyatt,

and she's dead, so we can't ask her.

[Sniffles]

Hey, Beverly, is Joanna home?

Are you okay?

How can you live with yourself, Robert?

Beverly, I think you're confused.

I'm... I'm not Robert.

She was dead before she
ever got in that car...

- Who was dead?
- And she was so beautiful...

and she loved you.

We'll take it from there.

[Laughs] Really? What'd she do?

She got into a scuffle with an ex-con

who, apparently, is a friend of yours.

Wyatt Scott?

Well, "friend" would be
a gross embellishment.

Something I can help you with, Agent?

I'm here about Vivian Bowers' murder.

So, is the rumor true?
Is the case not closed?

As a friend of Vivian's...

and I know all about
it, all right, Senator...

would you happen to know if she knew

about Sofia and Wyatt?

[Sighs]

Vivian knew everything because I told her.

So is the case not closed?

that Vivian's death had nothing to do

Julian said Vivian was wearing this

- No, I'm not.

I can't do this anymore.

Do you have a minute, dad?

Just to talk?

Of course, sweetheart.

Good night, Detective.

This is unbelievable.

The single most important piece of evidence

that we've gotten thus far, and it's lost?

What are you saying to me, Gabe?

I gave it to the freaking rubber guns

at the property clerk,
and now they can't find it.

Here's my voucher.

Kowalski, Kosklowski, whatever.

The guy's half in the
bag. He took it off me.

I'm gonna lose my mind. We had him!

Do I need to go down there myself?

Yes! That's what I'm saying.

Let's go look.

I'm just telling you what they told me.

- I'm trying.
- So, try harder!

Will, Senator Haverstock is on line one.

He says it's urgent. All right.

Moreno.

All right, so, what have
you got besides the suitcase?

If, indeed, it is lost, where are we?

Nowhere. We got nothing.

Julian isn't even sure she
was wearing the bracelet

the night she was killed,
and that's the only thing

that tied the murder to the house, so...

Look, we're gonna find that suitcase.

Don't count on it. Robert has a long reach.

Excuse me, Senator. What do you mean "we"?

What are we doing here right now?

I am going to be the next Attorney General

of the United States.

That's why I was at the white house

the night of Vivian's murder.

The president will announce the nomination

- after my surgery next week.
- And does the President know

that you got a 16-year-old girl pregnant?

We expect the approval process to be swift.

I have friends on both sides of the aisle.

What you mean is that
you have dirt on people

on both sides of the aisle.

Same thing.

As Attorney General, I'm
going to be your boss, Will,

and I am taking an interest here.

You're going to stay in that house.

What? Do you know she's
sleeping with Julian Bowers?

Excuse me, Sparky, you lost the suitcase.

Now, you're not in charge here.

Now, we're gonna keep
this investigation open,

but nobody knows except the four of us.

- Why are you doing this?
- The same reason you are.

I want justice for Vivian.

If it's Robert, he has to pay.

- Hi.
- Hey.

I didn't know where else to go.

[Cell phone ringing]

- Hey, you.
- I'm late.

I'm... I'm getting your mom flowers.

Oh, you don't have to do that.

Yeah, I do.

You okay?

I feel like you're a
million miles away right now.

Yeah, I'm good.

I just... I was thinking.

Maybe I should stay
here for a little while.

Maybe we should hold off

on the whole
moving-in-together a little bit.

Sure, if that's what you really want.

Just don't go too far away.

I won't.

Edward's here.

Yeah? That's good.

Yeah, I know.

I thought my dad was
gonna cry when he saw him.

How does he seem, Edward?
I mean, he must be a wreck.

Okay, I guess. I don't really know.

I hope he stays with us for a little while.

Maybe the girls will move in too

and make things a little
bit cheerier around here.

Yeah.

Hey, babe, if I don't get
going, I'm... I'm gonna be late.

Um...

I love you.

Yeah, I love you too.

Hi.

Are... are you looking for my mom?

[Muffled shout]

[Knock at door]

It's Robert! Is this a bad time?

- [Mumbles] Go away.
- Uh, no.

Just, uh, give me a second.

[Giggling] Come on. Get off, get off.

- Why?
- Come on.

- We're gonna get busted.
- How are we gonna get busted?

We're grown-ups.

- Go.
- Mm, fine.

- Go.
- I'll go out the... window.

Just be careful 'cause
the last time you did that,

you were 19.

I'm good.

I'm coming.

[Clears throat]

Both: Hi.

I just wanted to clear the air, I guess.

Have a seat.

I think we both had the
wrong idea about each other.

Yeah, I think that's true.

I had this absurd notion
that you were working

for Kirschner-Sims.

Well, there was a lot going on at the time,

and a little bit of paranoia
is certainly understandable.

Paranoia is underrated
in business, I think.

Hm.

Kirschner-sims was crazy to take me on.

I always find out...

and I always win.

So far.

So far... right.

Anyway, dinner's in a few minutes,

and Edward is home.

Come and have a drink with us.

Okay.
