Deadliest Catch (2005–…): Season 7, Episode 7 - Thick as Thieves - full transcript

The police are called in after a confrontation on the Cornelia Marie while a debilitating injury to a Kodiak deckhand ends his career for good. An injury onboard the Ramblin' Rose causes the rookie skipper to have a change of heart.

He's a (BLEEP).

MAN: Yeah, baby!

MAN: This boat is definitely not
a democracy.

There is judge and jury, and that
is me.

MAN: I'll either be right or
wrong.

This will be the last shot across
the bow.

MAN: Well, lots of quitters on
here.

MAN: I don't know why I'm here.

I hope I find some lesson in all
this.

NARRATOR: Three days ago, the
crew of the Cornelia Marie

called an unprecedented end
to king crab season.

And, see, nothing's changed on
here.

I've tried to bring a different
culture to the boat. You know?

But they don't want things to
change.

They want 'em the way they were.

I know there's dope on this boat
somewhere. I just can't prove it.

It's zero tolerance with drugs on
a boat. Zero tolerance.

Coastguard find dope on this
boat,

they seize the boat, they take
it.

They could keep it. Don't even
have to give it back with a fine.

I'd lose my licence. I could go
to jail over this.

Did he care? No.

It's been keeping me awake, me
trying to figure it out.

Then it came to me last night,
finally, I think.

It's got to be in the engine
room.

I think that's where they're down
smoking dope.

Got to be. They got to be hiding
out in that tunnel.

(BLEEP) this.

Unable to confirm his suspicions,

the captain goes on the hunt for
proof.

I can smell it. It's like...

It's in the cardboard.

Somebody's been smoking weed down
here lately.

Little spots of ash here.

We've got ash down on the deck.

All along here.

The smell of it. It's right
there.

Holy moly!

Well, looks like a marijuana
pipe,

a homemade marijuana pipe out
of...

..tinfoil.

Whoa!

You own part of this boat.

Your dad left you a legacy to
carry on.

And... this is going on.

Air freshener.

Might need some of that in the
engine room.

Hey, Jake, Josh.

You guys want to, uh... get up?

We'll have a little family
meeting.

Hey, boys, boys, boys.

Wake up. We got to have a
little...

..a little family meeting here.

Huh?

Steve's done? Steve quit.
He's a quitter.

He quit on you guys. He quit on
your dad.

MAN: Nobody wants to be here,
you know.

I was hired as the captain of
this boat.

I ask you to step up, be
responsible, don't lie.

Take some pride
in what you're doing.

That's all I ask you to do.

So, you're all quitting,
basically, on this deal.

We're not going red crab fishing.

Ryan, are you quitting?

I don't know. I'm...

Freddy, are you quitting?

You came onto this house and you
tried to take it over

in what would be considered to us

as somewhat of a hostile
environment.

And your iron fist ruling

has made it so no-one feels
comfortable.

Iron fist ruling?
That's right!

No, no, listen.
We've had other skippers.

This has never happened on this
boat.

This boat has never been in this
type of shape morally.

And you go to each individual
person

and tell them (BLEEP) Jake is,

and then (BLEEP). Oh,
well, who does this belong to?

Where did this come from?
It's not mine.

Not yours? Not mine.
No? No.

I'm going to go a little CSI on
you. OK.

Gonna get this fingerprinted.
Do it. Go for it.

I'm gonna go find out who it
belongs to.

Go for it. CSI all you want.

You haven't smoked any marijuana
on this boat?

I'm clean as a whistle.

Not a bit? Not a bit. Not a bit.
Haven't smoked dope on this boat.

None. We're clean. You can CSI
all you want.

Well, that's what I'm gonna do.

You put my (BLEEP) licence at
risk, my livelihood.

You're a (BLEEP) liar.

(BLEEP) I mean, you want respect.

Do you have a little merit badge?
(BLEEP) 'Hey. Respect me.'

Respect is earned, you know. No,
you gotta respect yourself first.

You're a drug addict and you're a
pathological liar.

Oh, OK, yeah, whatever. (BLEEP)

Oh, I'm... Yeah, he is.
No, I'm not. (BLEEP)

Look at this. You're so (BLEEP)
full of (BLEEP).

(BLEEP) Made that?

What the (BLEEP) are you trying
to do, Derrick?

He's on a trip.

Do what? My trip?
You're trying to accuse...

The lie. (BLEEP) The deceit.

(ALL SPEAK AT ONCE)
Oh...

Know what? Thick as thieves,
boys. You look out for each
other.

That's fine. We'll tie the thing
up.

I'll finish my job out. I'll get
my quota taken care of. That's
fine.

(LAUGHS)

(BLEEP) quitters.
That's what you are.

Now he's scrambling at any
possible (BLEEP)

thing that he can to make
any of us look bad right now

because he's embarrassed at how
he's presented himself on this
vessel.

Hi, Sergeant. This is Derrick Ray
on the Cornelia Marie.

We're coming in from a crab trip.

I've had... numerous occasions
to believe

that I had a crewman on here
smoking marijuana.

Yeah, I found the paraphernalia.

I know he's the one doing it.

Do I have any options when I have
suspicion of drug use

that I can just have him arrested
at the dock?

OK. That sounds good.
I'd appreciate it.

Thanks. Bye.

NARRATOR: 460km north-east of
Dutch Harbor is the Northwestern.

That's not good. This place is
cooked.

Halfway through this first string
it's really bad.

Ten days after Jake's dogleg
string came up empty...

It sucks.

..Captain Sig Hansen is now
searching anywhere

for signs of life.

We've been prospecting and
pulling pots from west to east

for the last 15 miles

where we were seeing 20s and
teens,

and now we're down to single
digits.

Twos don't cut it.

We need patience now.
A lot of it.

NARRATOR: While the skipper keeps
his eye on the big picture...

..tension between deckhand and
deck boss runs high.

MAN: It's been that way since day
one.

(BLEEP)

Ten days ago...

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I THINK!
(BLEEP)

If you're going to sit there and
explode all the time,

if he's just picking on you, how
are you gonna run a boat?

They're obviously very hot.

I think people should really
think about what they say.

It's hard to take stuff back.
There's a lot of (BLEEP) said.

You know, you're not gonna fish
a long season

and not have a few... squabbles.

Edgar has a knack for (BLEEP)
people off. We've noticed that.

Act like a bunch of (BLEEP) kids.

(WHISTLES)

Read it!

I still love you.

It's like a therapy session up
here sometimes.

(LAUGHS)

NARRATOR: And, with that,
the tension is released.

All they need to do now
is catch some crab.

MAN: We're in 'em now, boys!

That's good.

MAN: Woo hoo!
Oh, yeah. I'm liking that.

Sure looks a hell of a lot better
than what we had.

Get out of the way, the man said.

(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)

(MEN LAUGH)

Woo hoo! We're back!

Oh, yeah. There's a good table of
crab there.

Hey, don't go down without
swinging.

It gets backlash.
OK.

I mean, in order for me
to be able to leave,

people got to find their place
real quick.

Good.
There we go.

Boom.
Awesome!

Get out of it.

MAN: Woo hoo!

NARRATOR: 40km to the south-west
is the Kodiak.

That last 15-potter had 500 crab.
Best we've had for a while.

Six weeks into a brutal king
season...

MAN: Yeah, baby!

..Skipper Bill is on the crab.

Look at that. I mean,

that's probably one of the more
impressive pots of the season.

But he's two men down.

MAN: Oh!
MAN: Oh (BLEEP)!

One lost to injury.

And one... BILL: Don't
walk away from me. (BLEEP)

You know what? Adam, Adam!
(BLEEP)

..just plain lost.

Yeah, Adam, get off deck.

Started off with five on this
trip.

Now we have three.

The light deck makes a tough job
tougher

for veteran deckhand Eric
Anderson.

It looks like he's in pain.

My foot is not feeling too good.

The ice... (SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)
is wearing off,

and now it's getting to be fire
in my foot.

(GRUNTS) But I'm out here. That's
all that counts. I'm out here.

MAN: Yeah!
MAN: Whoa!

Ooh, yeah!

Yeah, we're gonna set back.
We're gonna need a new bait.

Three man deck.

Things are just going crazy here.

It's gonna be a little dicey.

No, no, no. I'll tell you when to
set it over. (BLEEP)

I got it.
(MEN TALK OVER EACH OTHER)

Let it go. Now, throw it over.

Come on - let's get it together
here, huh?

I got it... Hold on, Roy.
What are you thinking?

In good fishing, a five-man deck

can make quick work
of a 25-pot string.

We really need Adam right now.
We got a lot of crab.

I mean, we need him any time.
We're already down a man.

With two men down,
it can take three times as long.

Jake, what the hell are you
doing, man?

Can go sort crab. I'm off.

Jake, you can't stand up, man.

I was at zero per cent yesterday.
I got 20 or 30 in me today.

All right, I'm up, Bill. I'm
going.

This is wrong.

Moving around would do him some
good, but I'm nervous.

He's like my kid, you know?

And this might loosen him up.

You know, being in the rack for
two-and-a-half days' straight?

I mean, I would come out
like Quasimodo.

But the extra guy makes a lot of
difference.

(MEN SHOUT)

We went from five guys to four
guys

to three guys to three-and-a-half
guys.

I'd be tearing this place up with
five. (LAUGHS)

Oh!

Well...
(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)

Get the crab out of their first.
Stay on the crab.

Oh, man. This sucks.

(SHOUTS INDISTINCTLY) ..while
you're winching up.

You're winching up...
(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)

Go faster, watch it down, cable
out.

Adam. Perfect timing to lose your
(BLEEP) mind.

..pressure regulator off
(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY).

That compressor is leaking like a
sieve.

Did you have any problems with
your steering?

For the first time since being
sent below

deck boss Adam McCalden appears
in the wheelhouse.

Do we have any problems?
No. Good.

(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)

Just that one?

I think that just goes to the air
start.

Yo! Whatever happened to
'motivate, not alienate'?

I guess you got to forgive and
forget,

but it's hard when people treat
you like (BLEEP). Hey.

(BLEEP)

Well, we'll see what happens.

I can give it to him. Everybody's
been under a (BLEEP) pressure.

He thinks he's carrying

the weight of this thing on his
shoulders.

He doesn't realise every one of
these guys

has carried more weight than
they're...used to carrying.

Got the things fixed
that needed a fixed.

Nah. It was routine.

Good to see everybody back out
there. I love you guys. Really.

(MEN SHOUT)

This is the first day that
fishing's almost been fun,

even with the (BLEEP).

I can... I can forget about that,
and I already forgot about it.

NARRATOR: 770km to the north of
Dutch Harbor...

..is the Ramblin' Rose.

(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)

In the mornings these guys laze
around

take 45 minutes, an hour before
they go out on deck.

That ain't the program around
here, man.

You (BLEEP) get up and you go out
on deck.

(BLEEP) this.

After 40 days grinding in search
of the elusive blue crab...

You want to work on a boat where
they sleep all the time

and take an hour in the morning,
then get the (BLEEP) off my boat.

Greenhorn skipper Elliott's
patience is wearing thin.

The way things are going, I'm not
happy with them.

I'm not happy with it at all.

Hey, Kado! Kado!

Cool. Sleep less.

MAN: I got to (BLEEP) eat, yeah.

That (BLEEP), he just did it.
(BLEEP) uncalled for.

That (BLEEP). Everybody deserves
something to eat, you know?

(BLEEP) that.

This (BLEEP) ain't gonna fly.

With no time to eat,

the disgruntled crew
heads out on deck.

I understand (SPEAKS
INDISTINCTLY).

You can only push time so much

before you can't
pull gear any more.

So why fight it?

(BLEEP) Not want to work for you?

Man, you keep your crew happy,
everybody's happy.

(BLEEP)

They're seeing how much they can
get away with.

And that (BLEEP) won't get you
nowhere with me.

After a 16-hour soak...

..the Ramblin' Rose pulls up on
their first pot.

(MEN SHOUT AND SWEAR)

What the (BLEEP) is going on?

Well, that sucks.

The worn line connecting to the
bridle snaps...

..sending a $1000 pot
and her bounty

to the bottom of the Bering Sea.

(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY, SWEARS)

That just doesn't happen.

That's what bad attitude brings
us - nothing but bad luck.

Especially when the leader's the
worst.

Nine hours later...

(MEN SHOUT)

..bad weather...

The weather is definitely not
favourable.

..and worse fishing...

..drive morale to a new low.

(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY) from every
direction.

This boat is definitely not a
democracy.

There is judge and jury, and that
is me, and that's it.

(BANG)
MAN: Oh (BLEEP).

Kado, you hit your face on
something?

Oh, my God.

I guess he hit his face on the
corner.

Took a little slight roll.

Kind of missed my step. (BLEEP)

Dragged my cheek right here.

You gonna live, Kado?

It's all Elliott's fault.

You gotta go home? Hell yeah.
I'm ready to go home.

That was... that was planned.

Hey, you wanna come up here?

It's not... I don't think it's
that bad.

Hey, you got bit by a mosquito
down there? (LAUGHS)

Dude, I'll shoot you up with some
morphine, cortisone,

whatever the (BLEEP) you need.

That could have been a bad day.

With no relief from the weather
in sight...

All right, go ahead and secure
the block. I'm gonna shut down.

..the rookie skipper shows some
mercy.

These guys are all my friends.

Let's go eat sandwiches. I'm
going to eat sandwiches.

(LAUGHS) Problem solved, boys.

Gonna shut down. Gonna take a
nap.

More than a nap. Gonna go to bed.

They're going to get to go to
bed.

420km north-east of Dutch
Harbor...

..is the Kodiak.

After battling through the agonies
of a three-man deck...

It's bizarre. Jake was hurt. Adam
was hurt.

The old guy over here...

..Skipper Bill rallies his crew
for the next string.

I mean, quite frankly, it's
almost more than I can expect.

I want to truly thank you guys
for sticking in there with me.

MAN: Oh, God.

MAN: Yeah, baby!

Ooh, yeah. (LAUGHS)

Five. Nine.
59! (CHUCKLES)

Work it, Frankie.

Oh, yeah.

Look at all the crab. (LAUGHS)

It's raining crab. Makes me a
happy man.

But for 50-year-old deckhand Eric
Anderson...

(BLEEP)

..the pain in his foot is
becoming unbearable.

(GRUNTS)

We got our senior citizen with
faltering movements.

Oh (BLEEP).

What the hell?

Hey, is he OK? Hey, what's going
on? What happened down there?

NARRATOR: On a break between
strings,

Adam makes his way
to the wheelhouse.

He's down in pain.
I mean in pain.

What...
Just give you a heads up.

I don't understand. Had a problem
with it all year. All year.

He had two cortisone shots this
year. Cortisone shots where?

In his foot. He looks like he's
in a lot of (BLEEP) pain.

All right, well, take him off
deck.

Roger.

Wow. Maybe tomorrow's my turn.

Please, please, please. Don't
worry about it, man.

Just go inside. Just get off it.

I'm very sorry, Adam. (BLEEP)
Don't, man. Don't be sorry.

(BLEEP) You been busting your ass
every (BLEEP) day.

You got no reason to be sorry.

Just do the right thing and get
off of it.

That's what we need you to do.

NARRATOR: After 32 years of hard
fishing...

He's not good. He can't move.

The deckhand's foot is breaking
down.

MAN: What's wrong with your foot?

I have plantar fasciitis, OK?

I can't do
my (BLEEP) job, all right?

(SCREAMS, SOBS)

The pain and injury threaten a
literal end to a long career.

(SOBS)

So now I'm chilling it out with
some turkey breast.

From pushing pots to running back
and forth to working 21 hours,

it just is breaking down,
and now it really hurts bad.

(SOBS)

Oh, it hurts. Oh God, it hurts.

(GROANS)

Yes, it IS our job, but it's a
great life.

Just don't weaken.

NARRATOR: Back in Dutch Harbor,

the Cornelia Marie pulls in
for their final offload.

We're gonna get this crab off.

We're gonna finish early this
trip.

MAN: Are you coming home proud?

Uh... proud of myself? Yes.

Proud of this crew? No.

A battle between boat-owners and
skipper

has brought a bitter end to this
king crab season.

I never wanted to get away from
the dude driving the boat

so bad in my (BLEEP) life, you
know?

Well, it's probably the worst
feeling I've ever had

coming off the end of a season
right now, you know?

It's just (BLEEP) utter chaos,
dude.

I don't really know what to say.

You know? (BLEEP)

I AM finished in this job
with my head held high. I am.

I did everything I was paid to
do.

Unbelievable.

(POLICE OFFICER SPEAKS
INDISTINCTLY) Josh.

Derrick Ray. Derrick. Hey.
How are you doing?

What's your last name?

I don't know
where he took off to.

He's got a black sweatshirt on.
How long will you be docked here?

Josh. You know where Jake took
off to?

Should be on the boat. Haven't
seen him. I was one of the first
off.

No, he was quicker than you.

Before the last line was tied up

he was off and down the dock 100
yards.

I don't know. So now there's just
one last step -

to carry through and get him up
to do what he said he would do.

We can prove this one way
or the other.

There's no way to cheat
a blood test.

There's no way you can do a fake
urine. I'll be right or wrong.

This will be the last shot across

Hi, security.

I'm looking for little Jake from
the Cornelia Marie.

He's took off somewhere.

If you guys see him around,
could you call me,

let me know, so I can come and
talk to him?

WOMAN: Yeah, but please don't
touch that. (LAUGHS)

The ones who picked up Jake from
the bar.

They confirmed they dropped him
off at the airport.

I have no idea. We had a dude on
the boat the last season.

(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY) Get all
kinds of (BLEEP) on the boat.

So it's not like (BLEEP), you
know?

This guy pops up with some weird
(BLEEP). Tries to blame it on me.

OK, so you don't have any weapons
or drugs on you right now? No,
sir.

I'll check you real quick.
Yep. Search me up.

Gotta turn about.

If you took a drug test now,
you'd pass it?

I'm not taking another... I've
taken two.

I mean, this is harassment.

How many times
you gotta prove yourself?

So you're not willing to take
another drug test?

I don't know. I don't wanna take
a drug test right now, no, I
don't.

I don't... I don't feel like I
should have to.

This stuff is pretty fresh, all
right?

I mean, it's not my (BLEEP).

I don't see where he comes from

to where he's trying to pin it
on me.

I mean...

He's got nothing on you right
now, so, as far as I'm concerned,

you're good to go.

Go search it up. Do what you guys
gotta do.

I'm out of here, and I'm happy
for it.

Jake. If you ARE doing drugs,
you stop,

cos you're gonna end up in jail,
you know that? Gotcha, yeah.

NARRATOR: Back in Dutch Harbor...

..the Cornelia Marie offloads her
blue crab.

It's just a pitiful delivery, it
really is.

Thank God they had some crab they
were doing earlier today.

Otherwise it would've cost them
more money to process than it was
worth.

Yeah, there's not too many crab
in there.

If my dad were here, I don't
think he'd be happy.

As the miserable offload
continues...

..Officer Kelly returns from the
airport.

Any luck? Yeah. You got a couple
of minutes? I do.

Can we talk on the boat,
somewhere quieter? Sure. You bet.

What's going on?

He's at the airport.

He's got a ticket. He's on a
flight out of here.

Well, I searched him. I didn't
find anything on him.

No drug paraphernalia.

He's denying any drug use.

(CHUCKLES) You've seen drug use
your whole life.

I've been around fishermen.
Sure.

I know the signs, you know?

I can smell it. I can see it.

I know when it's going on.
You know.

But the tough part is proving it
100%. Sure.

The stuff that you gave me,
the lighters, it's no big deal.

We don't have any evidence

to suggest that he's been using
drugs.

You know, there's nothing that we
can do as the police.

He did give me permission to
search his stateroom. Gave his
consent.

OK. So I'd like to have a quick
check in there.

But, you know, he's free to go
and he's on a flight out of here.

To jump on a plane just like
that.

No clothes, no bag, no nothing.

That's an admission of guilt.

When he told me this morning,

'No problem. I'll go up and take
a blood test' - adamantly, no
problem.

Really.

Next thing you know he's got this
storyline how it's because

we didn't catch any crab and I'm
(BLEEP).

No.

We've done all we can do here.
Right. You know.

Marijuana, you know, it IS
illegal in the State of Alaska.

We prosecute for that, you know,
but there's no signs of that here.
