Deadliest Catch (2005–…): Season 7, Episode 5 - A Wing and a Prayer - full transcript

Two crewmembers nearly come to blows on the Northwestern while a deckhand on the Wizard falls asleep at the wheel and sends the boat steaming blindly toward a fleet of nearby vessels.

So far this season,
I've made mistakes.

All we need...
is a little bit of sign.

Looks like we're gonna
have to earn it the hard way.

I enjoy battling this out here.

Trying to interact with
Mother Nature and catch crab.

Yeah! Yeah!
We don't settle for just OK.

Go home! We all hate you!

We lost power!

Edgar, drop the anchors!

♪ Theme music

70km from Dutch Harbor

in the port of Akutan Island...

..the 38m Northwestern
is heading out to sea.

Well, we're on our way out. We're
ready to start out second trip here.

We've got offloaded fuel
and we're gonna go -

we need to get outta here.

Turn around.

Captain Sig Hansen just offloaded
64,000kg of red king crab.

We had an OK trip
but it took ten days.

We want one of those five-day trips.

It's gonna be an awesome trip.

This one'll go down in the books,
I'll promise you that.

Just happy to be here.

I'm gonna haul
the last string that I set

and then below it, that's where
we put the Jake dogleg string -

we've got Jake's string in there.

That's the one stretched
the farthest out,

and I'm just curious to see
if there's anything out that way.

I'm not gonna hold my breath

but, uh, it's been a grind,
you know,

and the crab are harder
and harder to get.

We lost power!

The 1994-ton boat is on
a collision course with the dock.

The crew scrambles in the dark
to lower the 680-kilo anchor.

In the engine room,
Edgar struggles to switch power

from the broken generator
to the auxiliary.

Yeah!

OK, I got steering, I got power.

Can you... Can someone go down
and relay to me what just happened?

Overheated. I just switched over.

Edgar was pretty darn quick
to get the other engine goin'.

And the other guys are just like,
'Well, what do we do?'

He... Edgar went and handled it.

Those were supposed
to get ready on that anchor.

They didn't do it.

And Jake, especially, if he wants
to start runnin' a boat someday,

you can't sit there... 'Well,
somebody else will take care of it.'

Nothin' happened and I was headin'
right for the dock.

Told you,
it's goin' down in the books.

This one's gonna be legendary -
you'll see.

230km north-east of Dutch Harbor...

..the Wizard finishes
yet another disappointing set.

Right now I'm tired, I'm frustrated.

I thought there was lots of crab -
there wasn't any.

Oh, boy!

I've hauled as many blanks
in this season right now

as in the last
ten years combined.

That is not an exaggeration -
that is fact.

And we got
a storm comin' tomorrow...

..and the sooner we get
this crab caught, the better.

Forecasts warning 9m seas

mean their brutally slow fishing
could grind to a halt.

So, we push ourselves

and unfortunately, I'm the guy
that has to push everyone.

My poor guys are just
battered and beaten, you know?

We're at the point now
where we're gettin' numb.

I don't need to say anything else.

I don't know the last time
I held a king crab on here

for close to two weeks,
but it, uh... may've been never.

Red king crab typically survive
no longer than ten days in the tanks.

When crabs die, they release a toxin

that kills healthy crabs
in close proximity -

a chain reaction that
can eradicate the entire catch.

And I'm gonna be freaked out
for the next two days

until those crab come off the boat.

I feel like, you know,
I'm like that...

..two-leaf clover
wandering around the Bering Sea,

and everywhere I go, I've got this
black cloud hanging over my head.

With nothing coming over the rail,

Keith is forced to move
for the fourth time in three weeks.

We're gonna go set up right
over here about four miles.

I guess that's why
it's called 'fishin''...

..or is it called 'wishin''?

The last few days, man,
I just haven't felt right at all.

I've got every good-luck talisman
up here.

I've changed hats, I've changed
shirts, I've changed underwear.

Go ask if there might be somethin'

they brought on board they didn't
bring last trip or last season.

The skipper sends his brother
to hunt down the hex.

I'm probably just bein' silly,
stupid, goofy, tired, I don't know,

but I just don't feel right.

No, nothin'.

I don't know what's bad luck.
Everything's been here

for ten years or better.

I'd feel strange without
some of this stuff.

After a 20-minute search...

..Lenny makes a discovery.

I think I know what's caused
our little griefful pain here.

..we have under the console here.

Three weeks ago...

..Andy Hillstrand
from the Time Bandit

was playing guitar
at a bar in Dutch Harbor.

Lenny, walk away.

The night ended
with an altercation between

the crews of the Wizard
and the Time Bandit.

The recall is foggy

but the neck of Andy's guitar
somehow found its way to the Wizard.

Well, our last night in town,
for some crazy reason,

I decided to stick my fist
into Andy Hillstrand's guitar.

He was snappin' ya in the .
He tried to smash his guitar

over my head and I blocked it.

Luckily, all I got was a lump,
but needless to say,

this is the remains
of Andy's guitar.

That thing's gotta go, man. Oh, God.

Out of our life, out of our hair.

Bon voyage, slime bucket.

See ya.

Feels better already.

All right, guys,
let's get some crab, huh?

Let's do it.
No more juju,

no more mojo, no more

and let's just go catch
some crab.

If there was anything
on the boat that was bad luck,

it was certainly that guitar
and it's now officially behind us.

770km north of Dutch Harbor...

We're under the gun,
we've got a deadline.

Got four days
to put on 40,000 pounds.

Seabrooke captain Scott Campbell Jr

approaches his first
blue crab pots of the season.

Worst-case scenario's
we see no crab today

and that I've gotta go looking for
another day, and that would just...

I mean, there's no way we'd make
that first delivery date.

First hook for a blue crab here.

Yay!

Wow!

Not very many.

Yeah, we got a couple.
I don't know if they're big enough.

First blue crab ever.
Not blank - there was life in it.

It's gonna take a long time
to fill these tanks

at four crab a shot.

Looks like we're gonna
have to earn it the hard way.

We can come into an area
and grind on nothin'

and make a pretty big trip
out of it,

where other guys'd just pass it up.

It's not what we wanna do
but it's what we will do.

That's nothin' these guys
haven't done before

other than the 'horn, of course.

You don't know .

To make their offload
on numbers this low,

the crew will now need to turn
and burn through the gear.

Where's the bait?!

The bait!
Where is the bait?!

..which means 29-year-old greenhorn
Josh Fullmer

needs to pick up the pace.

Where is the bait, dammit?!

This is the beginning
of a very long day.

Just four days ago...

The point of breaking what?
Mental breaking.

Mental breaking
in two hours of fishing?

Nine out of ten greenhorns fail
because you can't get 'em through

this emotional, physical point
that we're at right now.

Yikes!

If he's failing on deck,

it's costin' us time,
it's costin' us money.

Shake it off, horn.

This hand right here is, uh...

Tried to give him all the
preventative maintenance stuff -

get the braces on,
get the ibuprofen in you -

he didn't listen.

He's payin' for it now -
his hands are killin' him.

Where endless hours and pain
are a way of life...

What?!
I can't lift it up.

You can't lift that up?!
You want me to lie?

..complaining is a mortal sin.

I don't like 'I can't'.

Never say 'I can't'.
'I can't' is for .

You're gettin' a little close,
standin' there

when you're throwin' the buoys.
I know - he already told me.

Yeah, I know and we told you that
from day one.

I know, I know. I'm up
all over but I'll get it, I swear.

I know you're gonna get it cos
I'm gonna make sure you get it.

Watch what I'm doin',
watch where I stand.

You're not on top of him
and he's gonna throw it.

He gets out of the way.

How do I do it like that if I was
told to never, ever lift my feet?

Don't lift your feet up.
So, I just do this?

No, don't do that -
that's probably not a good thing.

I just...
Try to just slide your feet.

The captain says 'slide',
he says 'don't slide'.

Some people say, do it their way,

some people say
'Do it the other way'.

Holy .

As 9,000 gallons
of seawater top the rail...

..Josh loses his balance once...

..twice...
He's in the cockpit!

..and slides a hat-trick.

Let it go, let it go.

Wait, wait, wait! Get out
of the way, get out of the way!

OK, OK.
Don't touch nothin'!

Josh made two potentially deadly
moves on the same pot drop.

While tossin' the buoys,
the greenhorn failed

to keep his feet planted
and was nearly caught in the bite...

..twice.

I don't think he really
understands the dangers

of what that line can do to him.

When something like that happens,
don't with it,

let it go, OK?
OK.

We told you that from day one -
don't with it. All right.

Hey, you gotta pay attention there.

You gotta keep those feet planted -
do not ever lift your foot up.

Next thing you know,
it's gonna drag you overboard.

We're all .
This is a grueller.

It doesn't get harder than this -
this is as hard as it comes -

so don't think it's just you.

It's physically and emotionally
tiring on everybody.

You know, even Derrick,
he's gettin' , so...

Yeah, Derrick, man,
he got in my face today.

Yeah, but you know what, dude?
This close to my face

with his breath , tellin' me
what to do and to shut my mouth.

My God. Yeah, he's... You know, he's
the one that knows what he's doing.

If he throws that buoy
and I'm standin' there,

that's gonna wrap around his neck
and he's goin' overboard,

so he had every right to do that.

And that's what you don't know -
you don't understand that -

and he's been in that situation

where a 'horn
damn-near killed him...

Really? ..so that's why he was
gettin' up in your grill.

Quit taking it personally -
we already talked about this.

Quit takin' personal.

400km to the north-east
of Dutch Harbor...

..is the Northwestern.

We're in the Bering Sea

and we're about to embark
on our second journey.

We're gonna pick up my string.
Jake's dogleg.

The doglegger.

On the first trip...

Right here,
I want it to cross these depths.

..Sig let Jake step up
and plot his own string.

What are you gonna do
if it comes up blank?

Now after a four-day town soak,
the moment of truth has arrived.

Open hit. I'll put 100 bucks down
that Jake's string gets a 30...

Yeah.
That's what I say.

All right.
100 bucks.

We got the first pot comin' up
in our Jake dogleg string.

This is his area.

What I like about this is that
it does have a steeper hill

on the bottom of the ocean

which I think is better odds
to get the crab,

cos they been layin' on those edges,
so it'll probably do all right.

If this doesn't go so well,

I don't know how good he's gonna
feel about me settin' any more...

Prayin' to God right now -
just let me get 'em.

Woo hoo!

OK, Jake.

Survey says... The survey says...

Uh... Yeah.

It's not blank.
It's not blank.

This one looks OK,
there's crab in it.

26 in the first pot.
Could be definitely be worse.

You got me fishing .

By the third pot, the verdict is in.

Seen bad pots before

but I'm gonna see
a whole day of 'em now.

Jake's string is a loser.

You look so intense, Jake.
You look so serious.

Smile.

He's .

I think he knows
he's on the spot now -

he's on the hot seat.

No!

This string is gonna be his legacy,
I don't know.

He's taking it so damn serious.

14, Norman, total.
Hey, at least they're not blank.

'Man, I couldn't catch
any crab there,

so I'm gonna be hard on myself -
I suck.'

What the hell is that all about?

If the string doesn't
perform the way he wants,

then he's gonna take that to heart?

After his dismal haul,
Jake gets his next assignment.

Do you have any idea
what we're gonna eat?

We're not eatin'. You're cookin'.

Right. Someone's gotta cook
cos obviously you're not.

You cook - you're such a hero.

Why don't you find the crab,
you ?

You're not even tryin'.
What are you talking about?!

Pancake and eggs
every morning.

It takes you 25 pots -
that's all I'm sayin'.

Take it easy.
I'm just tired of this.

You're the one who .
Exactly - grow the up

get over it and
and just do your job.

After along day
of beating himself up...

Look at yourself in the mirror.

..Jake shows little patience
for Edgar piling it on.

you.
Don't talk to me ever again.

You go call your girlfriend, Jake -

she's the only one
that feels sorry for you.

Yeah, you've had a hard life,
Daddy's boy - Daddy's boy!

Dealing with punks like you,
yeah.

Silver spoon in your mouth.
That's it.

Settle down.

We all know why with you.

Go home!

We all hate you!
You go run a freighter.

Fire me. Fire me.

Get out of my face!

I don't know what the hell's
goin' on down there again.

Come on.

He's gotta learn
to get a thicker skin.

We all know why with you.
Come on.

I thought it was
gonna go fisticuffs.

It looked really close -
really close.

So what's the deal? What happened?

It's just... you know.
No, I don't.

Yeah, but, dude, if you're gonna sit
there and explode all the time

if he's just pickin' on ya,
how ya gonna run a boat someday

if you can't handle a little...
I hate him. ..nitpicking?

I think that'd be
a little different. That's...

Why? Cos you think you have control,
so you can tell 'em to shut up?

They won't shut up -
they would never shut up.

Turn on the loudhailer,
you'll hear 'em just goin'

'Chap, chap, chap, chap'.

Then what are you gonna do?

Yeah!

Go out and freak out
and then everybody quit?

I don't know. Dude, and that's
just a small taste of what's to come

if you're gonna be runnin' a boat.

260km north-east of Dutch Harbor...

I've got about 40 pots left
to get on here,

off of here and then
we're headin' to town.

The Wizard is racing a storm
to fill their tanks.

I hope there's crab
in the rest of this gear

because we need
a nice little high point.

Last night
Keith expelled the ship's curse...

Bon voyage, slime bucket.

..by ditching the remains
of Andy Hillstrand's guitar.

See ya!

Now he's ready to haul his first pot.

There's more to it
than just mere fate.

Mariners have been superstitious
for 1,000 years

and it's not just
because of coincidence.

I'm doin' my best to try and get
this gear on some kind of crab,

so we can start this next trip
when we get back out

on a high note -
not another low note.

Keith has been at sea
for 13 days this trip.

Boom or bust, he must go in soon
or risk mounting dead loss.

Come on, come on, come on, come on.

I'm still optimistic that we're
gonna see some crab in this string.

Come on, crab, be in there.

Uh-oh.

Dammit!

Pluck her out.

I don't know what to do
at this point, man.

It just comin' and comin'
and comin'.

You think you'd
get rid of the bad luck,

you're thinking the curse is over

and you come back, start hauling
gear supposed to have crab

and it comes up with nothin'.

I've got every good-luck talisman
up here.

I've changed hats, I've changed
shirts, I've changed underwear.

Full pots. Save my season.

Right every time.

Oh, my God, that is, like,
the hottest sign on the planet.

If that ain't a good sign,
I don't know what is.

Hey! Oh! Whoa! Back! Oh!
Heads up! Heads up! Heads up!

Oh, dammit.

Over here, over here!

With seas rising...

It's not fit for man
not crabber out there.

Whoa! Whoa, whoa.

..the skipper refocuses
on the safety of his deck.

These guys are pretty well
wasted at this point.

..they're comin'
from the starboard side...

The seas have grown
and it's gettin' right on the edge

of not bein' workable right here.

This is right on the edge
of not bein' workable.

Yeah, those poor crab
are just taking a beating

in the tank right now too, dammit.

They're definitely experiencing
Mr Toad's wild ride

in those crab tanks right now,
flying all over the place.

That one was pretty hefty.

Doesn't matter how much
you try to control your situation...

At the end of the day,
you really don't have control.

Watch out!

Woo hoo!

After an icy Bering Sea shower...

.Monte heads in for some dry gear.

She's finishin' on a bang,
I'll you what, man.

What the hell?!

A strange omen appears
in the Wizard's galley.

Hello.

Hey, uh, we got giant seagull,
just went down...

So, the bizarre and the strange
refuse to end on the boat.

Kind of cool actually.

Birds are good luck.

I mean, they say
they're the souls of lost sailors.

Figure if that sailor came
all the way into the galley...

..he must've been on a mission.

Come on, baby,
give me some number here.

Give me a number -
give me a big number.

Yeah!
Oh, baby, look at that!

Yeah!

Oh, man! Wow!

Look at that pot!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about.

Look at everybody smilin' -
everybody.

Woo!

Hell, yeah! Woo!
Look at those crab!

70... 5.

Look at all those riders up here!

53. Woo!

280km north-east of Dutch Harbor...

Uh... wah-wah.

..is the Time Bandit.

Oh, this is a bad,
bad, bad, bad thing.

Oh.

Not a good sign
seein' all this gear goin' aboard.

For the fourth time this trip...

..Captain Johnathan Hillstrand
has loaded his deck with gear...

That was depressing.

..and now he's back on the hunt.

Either I go towards the east
and blaze these pots out

and let 'em soak and hope -
poke and hope.

And then run down
and grab that gear down there,

and then shoot the moon with that,
go south with that.

Johnathan must find
a new place to fish

in the two million-square kilometre
Bering Sea.

Looks good.

Then when I come up back through,
I come back up,

grab our north-east stuff.

Yeah. It's too far ahead
to think right now.

I see Johnathan's mind spinning
like Fred Flinstone's feet

when he's drivin' his car.

That's what Johnathan's wheels
are doin' in his head.

Ten days of hellish fishing has left
the 31-year veteran flailing.

So...
So what?

So what do we know?
We know that, uh...

We know that I checked
the surveys again, and we just...

When we originally sat our first
set, well, that was right...

..there's a big spot
we didn't cover down there.

You're thinking about
goin' back south? Yeah.

Johnathan's new plan
is highly unexpected...

There was a big space right here
we didn't check, dude.

I mean, that's huge.

..returning to the slime banks,

the exact same place he suffered
defeat earlier this season.

Let's go down here and set
a big set, start pickin' up...

We can start pickin' up
eight or nine hours.

Oh, boy.
Oh, boy.

There's no goin' back
to the .

If you look at the survey, we need
to get our on that bank.

We're already a week late anyway.

So why don't we go on down here

and we zigzag this whole hill...
down here?

Just pull as many as
you need to...

Get it out of my system.
Let's find the crab.

I know exactly what to do.

720km to the north-west,

the Seabrooke continues
to work around the clock...

Oh!

..to make their offload
in just four days.

I don't know.

You need to fill 'em up like
we normally do.

Go get the pot now - it's too late.
The pot.

I think he's just
tired and lost right now -

that's what's goin' on.

The horn's not
mentally tough right now,

so I'm gonna have to have another
talk with him here

to keep him motivated,
to keep him out on deck,

but I'm also gettin' to the point
where I'm tired

and I might blow up on him -
I don't know.

I'm so tired right now.

I've been grindin'
for 26 hours straight.

It's hard to feel
what's in my hand right now.

These are past the throbbing point,
so now it's just kind of numb.

Hopefully the goes away soon.

At dawn...

..the greenhorn's cramped hands...

..finally drive him off deck.

Oh, yeah.

Either you're able to push through
the crabber hand or you can't -

that's your choice.

If you can't do your job,
I've gotta stop the whole operation

and go a four-man deck, so...

..go out and work or can't you?

That's your choice.

Failure number
whatever number it is.

Oh, God!

I gotta at least get another
20,000 pounds on, you know?

I mean, this is financially
gonna cost us $80,000

because his hands hurt.

Well, it is what it is -
I'm done talkin' about it.

That's my girlfriend right there,
Joelle.

This is Kaydis - he's the oldest.
That's my baby son.

I just wanna have a good Christmas.

I wanna surprise my girl...

..cos I'm gonna propose to her.

I've waited after this
for, like, a long time.

I miss her so much.

200km to the north-east
of Dutch Harbor...

Don't even ask
where we're at right now.

..the Time Bandit arrives
at the slime banks.

Despite losing out in the same area
four weeks earlier...

Can't say 'Captain's doin' wrong'
but captain's doin' wrong.

..Johnathan is convinced these
grounds could still pay off.

Oh, God, this is killin' me.

Here we go.

If there's no crab here,
I'll contemplate suicide.

The skipper's plan
is to cast a wide net...

..with a 45-pot,
72km-long prospect string.

It's a huge risk.

The crew works from dawn...

..until midnight with no break.

All I can say is
I hope this pays off.

With the last pot over the side,

Johnathan circles back
to the top of his gear.

We're zigzaggin'
all the way through,

cover this whole area,

so I'll know if we missed somethin',
we'll find it now.

This is a scallop-bed area -

there's scallop beds
scattered out over here.

We don't what we're gonna get
till we pull 'em.

King crab feed on scallops...

Whole bunch of water
and a bait set up -

that's what I think
we're gonna find.

..but if Johnathan misses
the scallop bed by even a metre,

they'll catch nothing.

No guts, no glory, man.
You gotta air you as well.

13 years of crab-fishing,
this is by far the biggest gamble

I've ever been a part of.

Yeah!

Oh, yeah.
Better?

Woo! Yeah!

We're finally gonna make
a little money here, guys.

Looks pretty good.

Doin' good, brother.
Crab-fishin', baby.

This is pretty good fishin' here.

3-5. 35, Johnathan.

Good numbers, good crab - it's
lookin' good for the Time Bandit.

Doin' good, brother. Way better
start, man - we're slammin'.

Help me to help you to help me...
..to help me.

56km to the north-east is the Wizard.

With their tanks finally stuffed,
the crew get some much-needed rest.

There's boats up ahead. They're not
showing up on the radar yet, so...

OK.
Their signal's not strong enough.

There's some up here too,
I was trying to plot.

Deckhand Lynn Guitard
takes wheel-watch

on the steam back to Dutch Harbor.

Yeah.

Lynn switches off the watch alarm -

the only defence to crewmen
falling asleep at the wheel.
