Deadliest Catch (2005–…): Season 7, Episode 11 - Birds, Bones and Blood - full transcript

As another winter storm rips through the crab grounds, the Ramblin' Rose makes an all-or-nothing gamble, the Time Bandit courts danger at the dock and a crewman on the Northwestern suffers a bloody, nose-breaking blow.

You're talking about a whole
different world, really.

Nasty conditions.

It's not for everybody.

Ah!

Is it bleeding?

Everybody changes when they
come up here.

You do it how I tell you to
do it!

You've got to have it here and
here... to be a fisherman.

That's the right stuff.

Get down! Get the down!

♪ THEME MUSIC

Watch out!

540km north-west of Dutch
Harbor...

..the men of the 47m Wizard prepare
to drop their first pots...

Everything's froze up. We gotta get
that ice off.

..since an Arctic hurricane shut
down fishing 30 hours ago.

We're pretty much pinned down

and the fleet's pretty much pinned
down.

You don't send the guys out in this
weather, but I don't have a choice.

To make up for lost time,

Captain Keith Colburn needs to fish
through the storm.

The ice and the weather.

It's cold out, we got some
20-footers going around

every now and then right now, so
it's making for a long day.

For every nice day you get ten
days.

Deckhand Freddy Maugatai confronts a
modern problem...

What is he doing?

Hey, Freddy, turn around and look at
me.

..with an ancient ritual.

Freddy has a good luck ritual of
eating the blood from a cod,

turning it into warrior paint.

Freddy, you're hardcore, dude.

Kevin.

Ready, brother?

Straight up! Drink it, drink it! Do
it, brother!

You can do it!

Thatta boy, Kevin.

Oh, man!

A nation of warriors, baby.

Traditional war paint, argh!

Well, Freddy, we need all the luck
we can get for this next string

and this next trip - right on!

Six hours later...

..as Keith approaches his chosen
grounds...

..Freddy's plea to the crab gods is
answered.

The weather, after about
eight days, is finally cooperating.

There's a break in the weather.

It's gonna be a small window of some
decent weather.

It doesn't always work out,

but I think we've got a win-win
here.

All right, let's go ahead and get
them off.

Sometimes you gotta fish the
weather

and sometimes you get to fish crab.

This trip, we got to fish the
weather.

The superstitious skipper wastes no
time

and sets while the weather holds.

The best fishing is over here.

I'm gonna set, set...

..come back and probably set, set...

..out.

Up until now, we haven't had the
weather to set a pot and go.

Now we've got the weather where we
can set, go, bang.

Just like that - boom, boom,
boom, boom.

And slam.

That's why I like my job - every day
is a new day in the Bering Sea.

64km to the south-west...

..the storm rages on

as Captain Sig Hansen battles 9m
walls of water to reach his gear.

When you see them coming, then you
gotta point into it,

power in, otherwise it's gonna take
you.

So you wanna really manipulate the
boat through the waves

as best you can.

Ooh! Watch out!

Get down!

Get the down!

Woohoo!

Holy cow!

Out of nowhere...

Get down! Get the down!

..an 11m wave slammed into the
wheelhouse...

..putting Captain Sig Hansen and the
cameraman

directly in the line of fire.

We'd rather not fish in this stuff
if we can help it,

but while we're out here in this
weather

and it's blowing the way it is,

as long as we can get through a few
of the pots

a little at a time, it's that many
more pots we've pulled.

Sig's pots have been soaking for
five days.

I don't want the guys to get washed
over the side.

He's got no choice but to haul.

It's just nerve-racking cos. you
know,

you've got these monsters once in
awhile.

I don't want to lose anybody.

All right, coming up on the first
pot here.

Where are you?

Where are you? There you are. Game
on.

OK, men. It's all you.

All right, throw it in front of
it, straight down.

God!

It's hard to throw the hook in this
weather.

Throw it, the wind just catches
it...

Let's go.

Woohoo!

Stay on the buoy!

Deckhand Jake Anderson makes way for
seasoned vet Nick Mavar.

There you go.

Nick had to step up.

He's always been kind of the go-to
guy for me,

so I think he just became the go-to
guy for the crew.

Whoa!

Oh, that ain't good.

Is that all right, that pot?

No.
Little light.

All right, let's hope she gets
better.

40, 50 knot winds with snow squalls

is not ideal conditions to haul
gear.

We've got to watch it here.

We're still not out of the woods by
any means.

Even though the count is low, Sig's
resetting his gear.

I really hate setting them back like
this,

but just try to do the most we can
the best we can with what we have.

With seas like this, stacking pots is
not an option.

Oh, it's really gusting.

Unexpected things can happen, you
know,

and you gotta be on your toes.

It's sort of fun for about an hour,

but that novelty just wore off
quick, man.

The crew earns every pot they pull on
board.

All the gear, it's not been real
productive,

but we're catching crab, so that
part's good.

All part of the daily grind.

Ah!

Did you get hurt?
Yeah.

!

Ah!

Are you hurt?
Yeah.

!

Is it bleeding?
Yeah.

Dammit!

Jarred free by a wave, the hook
sprang across the deck

and whipped into Nick Mavar's face.

Nick, you OK?

You're sure?

It's just a cut, guys.

No, I'm fine.

Nick doesn't realise the extent of
his injury...

..until he looks in the mirror.

The steel hook snapped his nose in
two.

Can you breathe out of it?

Yeah.

Yeah.

I'm 90% we gotta take you in.

Sig's fishing has already been
delayed by weather.

Oh, boy.

Now he may have to head for town.

Go figure. Stupid hook.

My name is Sig Hansen, I have the
fishing vessel Northwestern

and we've got a little incident on
the boat.

He was working on deck

and a steel picking hook came loose
and it flew about maybe 10ft...

Ah!

..and hit him across the bridge of
the nose.

I would say it's off maybe an
eighth- to a quarter-inch.

Yeah, it's got a curve to it.

What do they normally do in a case
like this?

I mean, do you gotta go in for, you
know, reconstructive surgery

or how's that all work?

They just let them heal, huh?

OK, well then he's gonna carry

the mark of the Northwestern for a
long time.

180km away...

..just outside St Paul Harbor...

Yeah, no .

..is the Time Bandit.

Captain Andy Hillstrand is jockeying
for a sport to anchor

in crowded waters...

There's a lot of boats anchored up.

It's blowing 50, probably gusts into
70 right now.

..and he's getting some unwanted help
from a back-seat driver...

..brother John.

I already do. I saw him out my
window. That's why I was moving.

Now I have plenty of room. Now I
feel better.

Then you make the call.

Tell them to get ready, Mike.
OK, stand by.

Start letting it go.

OK, let her go. Go ahead. Wire out.

With enough breathing room, the crew
start dropping the 680kg anchor.

It's not caught yet. We're bouncing
like a .

OK, let more out. Let more cable
out. Go, go, go.

The anchor doesn't catch and the Time
Bandit drifts.

Johnathan calls for more line.

Johnathan, there's only one more
wrap of cable left.

We have 2.5 wraps of cable plus the
chain.

Right now.

Yeah. Off the anchor.
Yes, off the anchor.

I know it's a lot!
You kept saying, 'Let it out.'

No!
We have 2.5 wraps out.

Now there's too much slack between
the boat and the anchor.

No.

Yep, something just happened.

Yeah, I think we broke the
anchor off there, Mikey.

Dammit.

Under Johnathan's orders, the crew
let out too much cable.

Pushed by the heavy currents,

the boat drifted over the slack,
picking up speed.

When the anchor finally caught, the
added momentum snapped the cable.

!

Boom, it broke. Gah!

Oh, yeah. Probably.

We'll find it. We have a whole shot
of yellow floating line

with a white buoy on it.

We'll be able to spot it.

Like a crab pot, the sunken anchor is
attached to a buoy

to mark its location on the ocean
floor.

We'll be able to get it back when
it's down a bit here.

Daylight, when you can see.

With no anchor, Andy must jog the
boat for eight hours

until it's time to off-load.

Welcome to the Bering
Sea!

After jogging for eight hours, just
outside St Paul Harbor...

, dude, I can't see anything
in this .

..the Time Bandit finally heads in to
off-load.

We've got extreme ice and
conditions,

it's blowing 70 knots...

On top of it, there's ice in the
harbor.

Oh, .

Oh, my God.

Oh, this is gnarly.

OK, I think I got it now.

Well, we found a home in St Paul at
the dock.

We're just getting the boat ready to
off-load crab here

for our first trip, getting the
hatches off.

With the boat safely in place...

Do you know if there's a dentist in
town?

..the Hillstrands tend to an ailing
crew member.

Ah, yeah, we've got a dentist.

We have a dentist in town!

For close to a week, Eddie
Uwekoolani Jr

has been dealing with a mouthful of
pain.

So you got two teeth that are bad
and which ones are they?

So it's that one and it's that one.

We'll just have to pull both of
them.

Only thing is is we're gonna watch.

We're gonna watch.

The best option right now is to get
these teeth out.

OK, keep your mouth open as wide as
you can for me.

We've got 100,000lbs+ of opies on.

Each bag they haul out is worth
about $3,500.

We're probably going to pull out
between 80 and 100 bags today.

Do some quick math and figure that
one out.

OK, lots of pressure, OK?

Is he gonna get money from the tooth
fairy for these or what?

I think so. He might get a buck.

One down, one to go.

All right, same thing on this side.

Are those guys always
this crazy over there?

If it wasn't me I'd be laughing.

Almost done. Lots of
pressure, all right?

Here we go.
All right.

After the teeth come out...

Sweet.

..and the crab come off...

So I think the lesson we learnt
today...

..is if you brush your teeth

and floss, you'll have a white
smile.

..Eddie Jr gets some words of wisdom
and a clean bill of health.

Well, let that be a lesson to you.

435km to the south, in Dutch
Harbor...

..the Ramblin' Rose is six days
behind the rest of the fleet,

stuck in port.

After extensive engine repair, the
Rose is put to the test.

It's a good sound.

Sounds pretty good. Woo!

The battle-scarred sea vessel is once
again seaworthy...

All right, let's cut
our lines, let's go fishing.

Let's go, guys.
Yeah!

..and the youngest skipper in the
fleet, Elliott Neese,

embarks on his first opilio trip at
the helm.

Um, I could play it safe and go
where everybody else is at

and grind away, but we're going to
go out in the deep,

kind of get away from everybody,
make our own mark.

Vacation's officially over.

Opie fishing 2011 - two, zero, one,
one.

And off we go!

It's been a long time coming. We're
ready to go.

Finally underway, the rookie skipper
faces a long steam to the grounds...

If I this season

and don't catch the crab, I'm
.

I'll never get a boat again to run.

I'd be letting a lot of people down.

..and the biggest stakes of his young
career.

These guys count on me to make a lot
of money for the whole crew.

All right, you guys better get up
here real quick.

Make sure everything's battened down
tight, chained tight.

Even though it's nice right now, you
prepare for the worst.

Elliott is heading for the same
arctic storm

that is battering the fleeting.

He summons his crew to make sure the
stack is secure.

Any time you got a full load of gear
on, there's always a concern.

You could get out there, get a blow
of 50.

It could be 30ft seas. We'll run
chain on every row.

Out on deck...

..a gruesome discovery.

The boat is littered with lifeless
seabirds.

We got bombarded by the birds, dead
birds all over the boat.

I broke out one of the lights in
the front of the house.

They're just drawn to the light and
they ended up hitting the mast,

they hit the boom on the
crane.

They're all over the boat.
You can see them in the mast.

We've got a feather right here.

The ominous sign...

Yeah, it's a bad sign to
find

a bunch of dead birds on your boat.

..will have to be ignored.

You're not going to turn around and
go back to town.

Failure's not an option.

523km north-west of Dutch Harbor...

I hope there's crab here.

..is the 47m Wizard.

There better be, cos I've got three
strings all converged here

like the spokes of a wheel.

Captain Keith Colburn approaches the
gear he set 24 hours ago.

We've got to try to get as many
pounds on here

in the next few hours that we can.

Let's do it.

If we get a chance to fill this
boat,

which we're gonna try to do here.

Come on, come on, come on!

Come on!

Yeah!

Good call.

This pot's looking awesome.

495. Ooh!

Oh. Ooh. That's a nice pot.

Probably got 500 crab in it, close
to it.

You're gonna see when they dump that
sucker on the table, man,

that table's gonna pile up.

Pile it up, pile it up.

After six hellish days battling the
elements...

The weather is cold and the
fishing's hot.

..and nearly a pint of fresh cod
blood...

Hoo-wah!

The numbers have come up the best
we've seen this season.

..the Wizard is on the crab.

Come on, 500!

Oh, yeah, we're on the crab.
They're all Wizard crab.

I tell you what, man, Freddy's on
high speed today.

Looks like a lot of crab to move is
what it looks like.

Outstanding. Good, solid 400s here.

The crew is literally swimming in
crab.

Oh, yeah. He's on a roll.

I'm gonna have to start feeding
everybody cod blood.

It'll be mandatory at the beginning
of your shift.

With just seven days on board the
Wizard...

Yes! Cha-ching!

..former Cornelia Marie vet Freddy
Maugatai...

Freddy fit right in as if he's been
here for 20 years.

..has become the pride of both
captain and crew.

Now that Freddy's on the boat,

it kind of feels like there's an
older brother or cousin

that always just seems to cheer you
up.

Just awesome, you know? He's
bringing good luck to the Wizard.

Freddy's like a lightning bolt when
he hits that deck

and it brings everybody up and that
is huge.

Fishing's awesome! Sweet!

97km to the west...

All right, let's go ahead
and let her go.

First pot of the season! Woo! Yeah!

..the Ramblin' Rose splashes their
first pots of the season.

It's nice to be getting this gear
off the boat

with the weather coming up.

It's pretty nasty.

I'm just gonna dump all my gear at
about a 10-mile radius.

If there's no crab there, I'll stack
it on and move.

Most skippers prospect and spread
their gear over a wide area...

Prospecting means you spend
a day

running around looking for crab. I
think it's a waste of time.

..but not Elliott.

It doesn't make any sense to me.

We don't need no damn prospect
strings.

We've got it right here. We know
where they're at already.

The rookie captain is going all in.

Up! Oh, yeah!

That's what it is - all or nothing.

It's all in, all or nothing.

It's right on the crab, baby. It's
right on the crab.

Richard Rare, Richard Rare.

Over the next four hours, all 100
pots go over the rail...

Are you gonna stack?

..baited with cod...

..and confidence.

Yeah! Woo!

Yeah, buddy!
Yeah, baby!

Come on, crab!
Yeah, buddy!

It feels good to have all the gear
in the water.

We got our stack off the boat, the
weather's came down again,

came out real nice.

Elliott's bold move...

And now we have to wait.

..is in the hands of fate.

We have the whole recipe, minus the
crab.

That's what we need now.

There's a lot of crab out there to
be had.

435km to the north of Dutch Harbor...

..in St Paul is the Time Bandit.

Yeah! Woo!

After off-loading 68,000kg of crab
and two teeth,

the Time Bandit is ready for another
round.

We'll work for it, so ready to go
get another one.

My first trip was good, other than
the sore teeth.

This trip's gonna be a lot better
without that pain

and all that junk.

We're out.
We're outta here.

But before heading for open water...

Yeah!
There it is.

Get the crane ready. It's got an
anchor. It's got an anchor.

Come on, boys.

..Captain Andy Hillstrand has a 680kg
problem to deal with.

Here we go, baby.

I'm gonna save about $7,000 if I get
this anchor and chain back.

Oh, oh! Easy there.

Come on, baby.

Come on. Oh, oh! Easy, boys.

Everybody, keep on your toes. Be
careful.

Don't drop it in.

Try to get it down on the deck and
secure it or the chains, Scotty,

then we'll just - yep.

The skipper wants the anchor lowered
safely to the deck...

Listen to me. Trust me. Pull that
way. Boom all the way up.

Keep going up in the air!

..but Captain No.2 has a slightly
different plan.

Go all the way over to that side.

John, you should get that
anchor down low -

Listen to me.
Let me do...

No! Hey! There can be only one
captain

You do it how I tell you to
do it! Yeah.

There can be only one captain, right
now, right here.

I'm going to set that 1,500lbs
anchor down,

we're going to get this where we're
all safe.

Got my anchor back!

Yeah, we got that back, so that's
good.

Now it's time to go fishing! Woo!

Little Eddie's got his teeth ripped
out,

I got my anchor back, I got my 150
in,

we're going out for another load!

Yeah, baby!

193km to the west...

..is the Ramblin' Rose.

I'm real excited.

These are the first opie pots I've
ever hauled being the captain.

Captain Elliott Neese heads for his
first string of the season

after a 12-hour soak.

I'm champing at the bit to haul some
gear.

The hardest part for me is waiting.

Although weather on the ground has
subsided...

The amount of crab I have to catch
to load the boat,

I mean, I'd love to see 500s, 600s.

..pressure is mounting on the young
skipper,

who gambled all his pots in one
place.

One of those guys washed up on
deck,

soaking wet, couldn't, couldn't fly,
couldn't do anything.

I felt bad for him.

40 hours ago, a flock of birds made a
fatal mistake

colliding with the Rose.

Yeah, it's kind of a bad sign to
find a bunch of dead birds.

It's heartbreaking.

it, I'll just hide.

All right, let's go
crabbing, huh?

Come on, guys, let's go!

Woohoo! Yeah!

Here's the first string we're gonna
haul right here.

I think it's gonna be good.

First bag and it's diving. Good way
to get started.

Tide's running a little bit, sucking
them down.

Before hauling a single pot...

It's a lot harder to grab the bags.
It's a pain in the .

..luck on the boat begins to wane.

Come on.

Come on. Sinker, baby, sinker.

You got it. Bam! Nice shot!

There it is. That's why I got good
guys on my deck.

Pull, pull.

It's a tug-of-war between the
Ramblin' Rose

and the ocean tides.

Good job.

blank!

Nothing, not a crab.

First pot, nothing.

That sucked!

You know, that was our first pot of
the year,

there was no crab in it - well, that
sucks.

We're gonna see what the next
one has in store

and it can only get better.

No.3.

Elliott's bold gamble...

Annoying. It wastes so much time.

..has come up short...

He won't stop until he finds them.
He will not sleep.

That means we don't sleep.

..and the skipper's first opie
season...

This could be a long season if
things continue to go this way.

Birds on deck and a blown-up
engine.

..is off to a rocky start.

I mean, we're not gonna give up.

We're just gonna keep on grinding
till we find them.

Hopefully our luck will turn around
here.

515km north-west of Dutch Harbor,

the Northwestern pushes through angry
seas...

..and fishing is still shut down
after Nick Mavar's injury.

Ah!

Could have been worse. Could have
been worse.

What are you looking at me for?

You got nervous now, didn't you?

Uh-huh.

I seen him go down and then when I
ran back...

..he was getting up and he was
holding his face

and he looked at me and I seen the
blood...

..and I seen it bent and...

He's lucky it didn't get him in the
temple,

cos it would have killed him, right?

You get a lot of little warning
shots across the bow.

That's one of them, man.

Oh, man.

That really shook Jake up.

Boy, he was not doing too good with
that one.

But, I mean, it brings reality home,
you know?

I mean, that's his uncle, you know,
and he's got shook up about it.

I'm just, you know, nervous.

I don't want to see anybody get
hurt.

The last week, it's all we've seen
is big storms,

then Nick gets hurt.

You know, now I'm just, like, I'm
scared.

As the crew gets ready to head back
on deck,

Nick calls home.

How's it going?

Yeah, I just had a little accident.

Uh, yeah, uh, the hook came out, hit
me right in the face,

broke my nose.

I'm fine. I'm fine.

I'm a fisherman, honey, you know.
I'm fine.

So I'll call you tomorrow.

All right? I love you.

OK. OK, babe. Bye.

She's not happy.

Not happy at all. Maybe I shouldn't
have called her.

That's the culprit, right there,
the hook.

I don't know, it just gives you a
little bit more uneasy feeling.

Edgar always says it's not a matter
of if,

it's always a matter of when.

When was last string.

Jake puts nerves aside and gets back
to work.

Obviously I'm not going to have him
fish this next string,

so he can sit it out.

We'll just keep a good eye on him,
you know? Play it safe, you know?

Sig's got insurance.

I mean, I'll get a nose job, I'll
get a smaller nose.

I'll probably look better. This
might be good.

I might be getting a bill from some
plastic surgeon here pretty soon.

They can rebuild me.
Got to make him look pretty again.

I've got to get back on the horse.

I can't believe it.

I wish he would have took a string
off

and just really feel 100%, you know.

I hope he's going to be all right. I
think he will be.

Tough cookie out there.

I'm just so happy that it didn't go
bad.

We've still got to keep an eye on
him, obviously,

but odds are he's going to be all
right.

That dude is one tough
.

Manimal. That's half man, half
animal.

Nick Mavar, manimal.

I have to admit, we've had a lot of
close calls.

We've been very fortunate, you know?

Thank you.
