Dallas (1978–1991): Season 8, Episode 7 - Homecoming - full transcript

The return of Miss Ellie and Clayton engenders mixed reactions at Southfork as she acknowledges Jamie's resemblance to Jason and Cliff is delighted to learn from a conversation overheard by Mandy that he has J.R. worried.

Hey, it's from Mama and Clayton.

They're gonna be coming home
day after tomorrow.

I think it would be healthier it you
just accepted Mark's death as a reality.

PAMELA:
Well, I can't do that, Jerry.

Not until I'm sure.

They're gonna do everything in their power
to crush Ewing Oil. We're in a war.

We're losing one battle after another.

Miss Ellie's gonna have to decide
between Southfork and Clayton Fallow.

I'm not ready to start pretending
that Daddy never existed.

I found it hard to admit that he was dead.
I'm not gonna bury his memory.

J.R.: Hey, Bob.
BOBBY: Where have you been?

I've been waiting 10 minutes.
You said you'd be right down.

J.R.: I got a phone call
and I found this on my desk.

- Did you get a copy?
- Let me see, I can tell you.

Letter of resignation from Barry Finnigan.

Yeah, I got it.

Well, uh... Bob!

J.R.: Doesn't it bother you that
we lost one of the best geologists in Dallas?

BOBBY: Of course it bothers me,
but there's nothing we can do.

We just have to replace him.

J.R.: That's the third key man
we've lost in a month.

You know where they went?
Barnes-Wentwonh.

Barnes is starting to hurt us.
[HORN HONKING]

Watch out!
He's becoming a monster, Bob.

I don't have to tell you, do I.
that you helped create that monster?

That will never happen again.
I guarantee it.

That's gonna do us a lot of good now.

I did manage to stop something.

Westar was just about to merge
with Barnes-Wentwonh.

- Did you know that?
- You stopped it?

- That's right.
- How'd you pull that off?

I found somebody to get the word to Barnes
that I was behind the whole deal.

When he heard that...

...he broke off negotiations
with Jeremy Wendell and no merger.

Sometimes it is a help
to have a reputation like mine.

I don't think an unscrupulous,
unsavory, underhanded reputation...

-...is gonna solve our problems.
- Bobby, this is no joke.

- I'm not joking.
- All right, now, there's another thing too.

Mark Graison's will
hasn't been probated yet.

When it is, Pam could come
into a substantial fortune...

...which she'd add to the fortune she got
when her mama died.

I tell you, that woman has a knack
for piling up unearned dollars.

And you have a wonderfully crude way
of putting things.

Maybe so, Bobby.

But your ex-wife is very devoted
to her brother right now.

They're gonna do everything in their power
to crush Ewing Oil. We're in a war, buddy.

And we're losing
one battle after another.

Well, thanks for the coffee.

I gotta get back
to clean up some odds and ends.

Remember, anything you need,
my door is always open.

I appreciate that. Thank you very much.

- Surely, we'll be--
- Cliff.

Oh, Pam.
Pam, I'd like you to meet Barry Finnigan.

He's going to be joining us.
Barry Finnigan, my sister, Pam Ewing.

- Pleasure, Miss Ewing.
- You too.

Okay. Thank you,
I'll see you a little later.

Do you know who he is?

Well, his face looks a little familiar.

The reason I was looking for you is
there's something I've got to tell you.

That guy is Barry Finnigan.
He is the chief geologist for Ewing Oil.

Or was.

He's the guy that's responsible
for pinpointing that big strike...

...that J.R. had in the Panhandle
a few years ago.

He's gonna be a big asset
to Barnes-Wentwonh.

See, I finally discovered
how to break J.R.

And that is,
I just hire the best people he's got.

That leaves him helpless
while I build my empire.

Cliff, can I talk to you?

Yeah, sure you can.

PAMELA: Some very strange things
have been happening.

In fact, a whole series of events.

CLIFF: Yeah. How so strange?
- Well...

I saw Mark's car parked right here
in this parking lot.

Now, I checked
and there was a logical reason for that.

But?

But while I was checking,
I discovered...

...that everything Mark owns,
his home, his polo ponies, everything...

...is to remain just as it is
for the next two years.

I called his lawyer and he said
those are the terms of his will.

Mm-hm. So?

Well, don't you find that very strange?

I think it's a little odd,
but I don't know that it's a big deal.

Cliff, you had to be with me.

I mean, it's almost as though
Mark expected to return.

Oh, now, wait a minute.
Pam, that's nonsense.

I know his death was hard on you.
It's hard on me too.

But you have to put that behind you
and go on.

You can't go looking for ghosts.

Cliff, I have a feeling.

Pam, Jerry Kenderson said
there was no hope for Mark.

Now, he ought to know.
He was his doctor.

You can't do this to yourself.

All right. I'll be all right.

- Good morning, Jackie.
- Good morning.

Jackie, get Dr. Kenderson
on the phone for me.

- Try his office in Houston.
- All right.

DONNA:
Hey. I'm sorry I'm late...

-...but I was with the drilling foreman.
- I didn't notice...

You are not gonna believe it.
We got that well up to 40 barrels today.

Not bad
for a little $10-million investment.

Keep it up, cowboy.
and you're gonna lose a few teeth.

I didn't mean to put down your dabbling
in the oil tycoon business.

Well, you will be very happy to know
that they are doing more reserves tests...

...that are very promising.

As a matter of fact,
this could tum out to be a very rich field.

That's terrific because I'm looking forward
to an early retirement...

...after all this wear and tear
on the range.

[DONNA CHUCKLES]

DONNA:
Oh!

I know why you're grumpy.
It's because you're hungry.

- Right.
- Okay, well, uh...

What if I'm a good sport,
take us into town, feed us dinner?

Tsk, well, that won't be necessary, because
you see, I'm not a dependent husband.

I have dinner under control.

It's in the microwave
and it's gonna be ready in 10 minutes.

Oh, pray tell, what is it?

A well-balanced meal.

Oh, terrific. I'm starving to death.

[BANGING]

Well, I have news for you, sweetie.
You forgot to tum it on.

[RUMBLING]

Hard as a rock.

What? I set that thing.

It will take us a minute. Let me see.

It doesn't matter. Look, why don't
we just go into Braddock for a hamburger?

Look, I can still fix a meal around here.

Hey, hey, hey.

I'm sorry I'm late.
It doesn't happen often, does it?

Well, I guess I did let it get to me.

Well, that's okay.
You are entitled to be angry.

Because after all, I didn't many you
because you were perfect.

I married you because I love you.

- I'm sorry.
- Okay.

PAMELA: I thought we'd have brunch
out here, doctor.

JERRY: Jerry, please.
PAMELA: Jerry.

ANGELA: Mrs. Ewing,
would you like me to serve now?

PAMELA: Uh, not for a few minutes.
Thank you, Angela.

ANGELA:
Yes, ma'am.

[PAMELA SIGHS]

PAMELA: I feel a little guilty
about your flying up here.

I'd have met you in Houston.

[JERRY CHUCKLES]

JERRY: Don't worry about it.
I get up to Dallas quite often.

Besides, I always welcome
a chance to talk to you.

I guess I haven't seen you
since Mark's accident.

No, that's why I wanted to see you.

I think you were closer to Mark
than anyone.

I guess I was.

Thank you.

Jerry, I don't know how to say this,
except to just say it directly.

Do you think that Mark
was capable of committing suicide?

Uh, I mean, do you think it was part
of his makeup or his character?

A strange question. Why do you ask?

I got this letter from Mark
before the flight over the Gulf.

And in it, he said
that he was planning to kill himself.

You mean
the plane crash wasn't an accident?

Well...

It's his handwriting
and they're Mark's words.

But I don't believe it.
It's out of character.

You mean,
even under the circumstances?

He knew that he had a terminal illness.

You don't think
that Mark would kill himself?

Pam, you can't know another person
that well, but I'd say no.

Mark wouldn't take his own life.

You told him there was no hope.

That's right.

He knew it was gonna be
really difficult at the end.

I still can't see him killing himself.
He was a lighter.

Well, he was always such a daredevil.

You know, he tried skydiving and was
always participating in dangerous events.

Don't people like that have a death wish?

Look, Pam, I'm no psychiatrist,
but I know that's an oversimplification.

Yeah, Mark took chances, sure.
But that was for pleasure.

He had a great will to live.

I expected him to fight
to the last minute.

Was there some other kind of treatment
he could have taken?

I mean, he had unlimited means.
He was a world traveler.

Maybe there was a clinic some place.

Maybe in South America
or Europe 01 Asia.

Pam, there was nothing
that could be done.

If there was,
don't you think I would've sent him?

Jerry, I'm not talking about
conventional treatments.

I mean must be people some place that claim
to be able to cure the kind of illness he had.

You know as well as I do, there are
all sorts of unorthodox practitioners...

...who claim they can cure anything.

Could you get me
a list of those practitioners?

I suppose so.

Thank you.

Do you really believe
that this plane crash and suicide note...

...are all just a device to let Mark run off
and seek some kind of cure?

No, no, no.
If it were just the crash and the note.

But so many other things happened.

All right, I'll do my best with the list.

But for your own sake...

...I think it would be healthier it you just
accepted Mark's death as a reality.

Well, I can't do that, Jerry.

Not until I'm sure.

J.R.:
Hey, Bob, where are you off to?

BOBBY: I have tickets to the theater.
I'm gonna pick up Jenna.

Well, I guess we have the house
to ourselves today.

And Jamie.

Oh, yeah, somehow her being here
just slipped my mind, honey. Huh.

Have a nice time at the theater, Bobby.

BOBBY:
Can I help you?

MESSENGER: I have a cable for the Ewings.
BOBBY: I'll sign for it.

BOBBY:
Here you go. Hang on a second.

- There you go.
- Thanks.

Hey, it's from Mama and Clayton.

They're gonna be coming home
day after tomorrow.

Oh, that's wonderful.
Family will all be together again.

Family?

Mama's family, that's about it.

I can't believe a Fallow's
gonna be living here at Southfork.

Gonna take some getting used to.

Hi, Bob. When did you get in?

[BOBBY SIGHS]

How was the play?

It was good.

For a man
who took his fiancée to the theater...

...the play was good,
you don't seem to be happy.

I notice you're padding around the house
in your jammies.

What's bothering you?

I just can't believe
that as of tomorrow night...

...Clayton Fallow is actually
gonna start living in this house.

Just where would you expect
Mama's husband to live?

[SIGHS]

I don't know.
I just hate the idea, that's all.

If you're planning on doing
something funny, I'm warning you.

No, no, Bobby, that's all over.

I'm not gonna cause Mama
any more grief.

It's just that I haven't been able
to change my feelings towards Clayton.

Well, Clayton's a good man.

That was a wise decision
on Mama's pan to marry him.

And even if it weren't,
she loves him and that's all that matters.

Well, if everything is so wonderful...

...how come you're sitting up
at 3:00 in the morning?

Because I was thinking.

Things are gonna be a lot different here
at Southfork now.

You and I have been running things
ever since Daddy died.

And now, that's all gonna change.

I like Clayton, but...

Now we're gonna have to make
some adjustments and compromises.

You and I are gonna have to learn
to deal with a new man here.

Personally, I can't understand how he could
bring himself to live in another man's house.

You can just feel Daddy's presence
all over this place.

Maybe we should do something
about that.

Right now.

[SIGHS]

J.R.:
What the hell are you doing?

J.R., it's time
for this picture to come down.

Not on your life.
It stays exactly where it is.

It's gonna be hard enough for Clayton
to feel comfortable here...

...without this portrait to remind him
that it was Daddy's house and family.

You have no right
to take down that picture...

...just because Clayton Fallow
may be a little sensitive.

He knew what he was doing
when he married Mama.

Come on, J.R., lighten up.

I wanna do everything I can to make
Clayton feel welcome around here...

-...for Mama's sake.
- Mama's sake?

How do you think she's gonna react
when she finds this painting gone?

I think she's thoughtful enough
to want Clayton to feel comfortable.

Let he! take it down or move it
or do anything she wants to it.

I'm not ready to start pretending
that Daddy never existed.

We can't get rid of everything in this place
that he was connected to, Bob.

Hell, he built this house.
And he built Ewing Oil.

He's the reason the two of us are here.

I found it hard to admit
that he was dead.

I'm not gonna bury his memory.

We'll let Mama decide.

This dress is perfect
for the deb season.

And it's 100 percent silk taffeta.

WOMAN: It's beautiful.
How much is this one?

MODEL: Twelve hundred dollars.
WOMAN: From what department?

Yes, it has hand cut metal on pure silk.

I think it's perfect for that evening
on the town with that special man.

- It's lovely.
- Thank you.

It's available at the store for only $1095.

One thousand ninety-five dollars?

That's more money than I've spent
on clothes in my entire life.

[CHUCKLES]

Well, it really does
give me pleasure spoiling you.

I hope you don't mind.

I'd be lying to say
that I'm not impressed by all of it.

Uh, I mean, the restaurant, the clothes,
the food, everything.

You know, I'm beginning
to like the way the Dallas Ewings live.

It's just too bad
you had to wait until now.

After all,
your daddy was in the oil business.

I know, but daddy was a real wanderer.

You know. I never knew what I had missed,
not having stability and money.

Daddy could have had money,
a lot of it...

...but it just never seemed
to be important to him.

I guess that was the big difference
between, um, Jason and Jock.

Success and power
were always very important to Jock Ewing.

And that was the need
that he passed on to his sons.

Especially to J.R.

MANDY:
Good afternoon.

I'd like to show you
this beautiful evening gown.

As you can see, it's gray chiffon
with a chiffon overhang...

...embroidered with
eight fly gray ostrich feathers.

More coffee, Mrs. Ewing?

SUE ELLEN:
No, thank you. I'm fine.

MANDY: This looks lovely with a diamond
choker, bracelet and diamond earrings.

Sue Ellen, J.R. seemed to be upset
the other morning.

Well, he's been going through
a very trying time.

Because of Cliff Barnes?

Yes.

You know, J.R. made Cliff Barnes sound
to be like a real threat to Ewing Oil.

JAMIE:
Is he really?

[SIGHS]

J.R. is more worried about Cliff
than he'd ever admit to anyone.

The two men have always
hated each other...

...but this is the first time
that Cliff's ever had the upper hand.

I've never seen J.R. so nervous.

PAMELA: Mr. Graison's plane
was being monitored...

...by radar out of Houston Hobby Airport.

When the plane went off the radar screen,
it was somewhere around here.

And at the same time, a worker
on an offshore rig saw an explosion midair.

After all the information was gathered,
we realized that...

---Mr- Graison's plane had exploded-.

Mrs. Ewing, I could pinpoint
the disappearance with Houston.

We can come up
with some precise coordinates.

Well, that's fine. You shouldn't have
any trouble locating the plane.

We specialize in deep water salvage,
so let me tell you...

...there can be some very weird currents
down there.

It's not that easy.

Well, I understand that, Mr. Jackson.
That's why I came to your company.

I heard that you were the best.

Mrs. Ewing, the chances
of our finding anything are very remote.

The plane exploded in the air.

The wreckage could have been scattered
for miles before it hit the water.

Deep water like that, the currents could
have scattered the wreckage even more.

I have to know it Mr. Graison was actually
on that plane when it went down.

You mean,
you want us to look for a body?

Not necessarily.

I want some evidence of whether or not
he was on the plane when it exploded.

The odds of us coming up with something
like that are practically zero.

Well, I understand.

But I am willing to pay whatever it costs
for a full-scale search.

Okay. I'll do my best,
but I think you're wasting your money.

When do you start?

I can have ships and crews out there
in a couple of days.

Well, that's fine.

Oh, I will want reports
as often as possible.

Yes, ma'am.

Thank you.

[DOORBELL RINGING]

Hi.

I was thinking.
maybe I ought to have a key to this place.

Hey, hey, hey.

You wanna move in here full-time?

I'm not sure.
Do I have to make that decision now?

Well, If you're not gonna be
my full-time girlfriend, why...

You know, you could come in here
some night unexpectedly...

...and embarrass us both.

I don't embarrass very easily.

Well, I didn't think you did.

[CHUCKLES]

Uh, let me think about the key.

Okay.

I've got something to tell you
at dinner tonight.

Are we going out?

No. Uh-uh. We're gonna stay here.

Don't tell me
you ordered Chinese food again.

My mouth is full of wax
from those canons.

No. No Chinese.

Tacos and enchiladas?

No, no, no Mexican.

What?

[CORK POPS AND ICE RATTLES]

Cliff.

[CLIFF LAUGHS]

I felt the need to do something special.

- Everything ready?
- Yes, sir.

- Shall I pour the wine?
- Please.

I'm overwhelmed.

It's nothing.

[MANDY SIGHS
AND WINE POURING]

I also have a cleaning lady coming.
She'll be have twice a week.

- Cliff, that's wonderful.
- I did it for you.

After all, I can get along the way things
were, but I just thought you'd like that.

Well, since you're doing all this for me,
let me brighten your day.

Today, while I was modeling at lunch...

...I overheard Sue Ellen Ewing
talking to someone.

She was saying
how worried JR. is aboui you...

...and that you're a real threat
to Ewing Oil.

- She said that?
- Yup.

- You sure it's Sue Ellen?
- Yes.

And who did she say that to?

I don't know. A young woman,
tall, blondish, maybe a relative.

[CHUCKLES]

So J.R. is worried. Well, let's eat.

You know, maybe there's more
to celebrate than I anticipated.

Maybe I'm psychic.

Out with the old, J.R.

In with the new Mandy Winger.

And, uh, your new key to the condo.

[CHUCKLES]

J.R., I'm gonna pick up Donna and Ray
and Jenna and I'll meet you at the airport.

Okay.

I'm surprised Lucy isn't here
to go with us.

Don't you worry about Lucy.
She's acting even stranger than usual lately.

Jamie, you don't mind staying here
at the ranch, do you?

Oh, no. I wouldn't feel right
about being at the airport anyway.

I mean, I'm still a stranger to them.

Come on, darling.
Let's go pick up the bride and groom.

- Bye.
- Bye.

ANNOUNCER [OVER LOUD SPEAKER]:
Flight number 20, service to Austin...

...will be boarding in 10 minutes.

Flight number 20. service tn Austin...

RAY:
They're starting to come off the plane.

DONNA: Is that Clayton?
RAY: No, that's someone else.

JENNA:
Do you see them yet?

BOBBY:
Not yet.

RAY:
Hey, wait a minute, there's Clayton.

J.R.: But where's Mama?
SUE ELLEN: I don't see her yet.

DONNA:
Well, she's gotta be there with Clayton.

RAY: There she is.
BOBBY: Welcome home, Mama.

J.R.:
Welcome home, Mama.

[DONNA GIGGLES]

MISS ELLIE: Oh, dear...
- Welcome home.

- I'm so glad to see you.
- You too.

- Ray.
- Miss Ellie.

Mm, you've been good to each other,
I can tell.

- Sue Ellen.
- Welcome home, Miss Ellie.

Thank you for coming to see me.

- Mama.
- Oh, J.R.

JR.

- Welcome home.
- Jenna, dear.

Thank you, thank you.

- Bobby.
- Hi, Mama.

Oh, Bobby.

- Welcome home.
- Thank you.

- Are you sure you're all right?
- I'm fine. I'm just fine.

- Is your eyesight back to normal?
- Twenty-twenty.

BOBBY:
Both eyes all right.

ELLIE:
When I finally heard the news...

...Clayton had to restrain me
from getting on a plane.

J.R.:
Oh, he was better by then.

I know, but I didn't speak to Clayton
for hours after I found out...

...he'd been to see Bobby,
then flew back.

CLAYTON: She said I deceived her,
like I predicted, Bobby.

[BOBBY LAUGHS]

He didn't wanna worry you.

I know, Jenna. That's why I forgave him.

Didn't Lucy come to the airport
with you?

She said she's sorry she couldn't get out.
She'll be at Southtork tonight.

- Well, this isn't like her.
- Well, you know Lucy.

She's kind of strange sometimes.

There's a surprise waiting for you,
Miss Ellie, at home.

- A new member of the family.
ELLIE: Who?

Jason Ewing's daughter, Jamie.

Jason's daughter?

Yeah, that's who she says she is, yes.

Well, I'm more anxious than ever
to get home to Southfork now.

JACKIE: Are you coming back to the office
after your meeting?

PAMELA: Yeah, we still gotta get
some more letters out.

I'm gonna get a sandwich.
I'll see you later.

- Okay.
- Okay.

Pam?

- Dave.
- Hi.

PAMELA:
What a surprise.

Well, I was on my way to the bank.

- If you're free for lunch, I'd like to take you.
- Oh, Dave, I'm sorry, I'm not.

- I've got a meeting.
- Oh, okay. Uh...

May I call you some other time?

Well...

If it's not for lunch,
maybe a game of tennis.

We were a great team
at Jeremy Wendell's party.

Ha. We did have a nice afternoon.

It was.

Look, uh, I was really surprised...

...that Cliff refused Jeremy's offer. Ha, ha.

I thought that Cliff would really go
for all that money.

And the prestige of being
on Westar's board of directors.

I wasn't surprised.

Cliff's always wanted to make it on his own
and now he has.

Well, you know as well as I do...

...that the bottom line
in the oil business is, uh...

...especially for an independent,
risk, risk, risk.

And no matter how good
your geologists are...

...reserve estimates are just that,
estimates, guesses.

Are you telling me that Cliff's
Gold Canyon 340 tract could dry up?

No, but if I were in Cliff's shoes,
I would have accepted the deal...

...made a quick killing.

He wouldn't have had any financial worries
for the rest of his life.

Well, maybe not,
but that's not the way Cliff thinks.

Oh...

Dave, I think
you're a very nice man...

...but I've never been comfortable
with Wendell.

Well, he's tough, Pam, but fail.

Look, I--

All right, all right,
that's enough talk about business.

Now, what do you say, can I call you?

Yes, I'd like that.

Soon.
- Soon.

- Okay. Bye, Pam.
- Bye.

AI, uh, can I ask you a favor?

Sure, Lucy, you can ask all you want.
I don't know if I'll do anything about it.

[LAUGHS]

Well, it, um, looks kind of quiet around here
this afternoon.

I'd like to know if I could leave now.

Still have another hour and a half
on your shift.

Yeah, I know, but my grandma
just got home from along trip.

I'd like to go home and see her.

Okay, Lucy.
but don't make a habit of it.

Oh... Okay, thanks. I won't.

And remember,
6 a.m. sharp for breakfast.

Oh, you got it.

Uh, bye, everyone.

EDDIE: I'll see you later.
- See you.

Well, that reminds me.

I gotta, I gotta get back
to the construction site.

Uh, see you later, Betty.

Hey, are we still on for tonight?

I don't know yet.

What do we have to do
to get more coffee around here?

Hey, hold your horses. I'm coming.

Oh!

- Oh, oh!
JOHN ROSS: Welcome home, Grandma.

Thank you, John Ross, thank you.

JOHN ROSS: I missed you.
- Oh, I missed you too.

Mmm.

SUE ELLEN: Hi, sweetheart.
JOHN ROSS: Hi, Mom.

J.R.:
Hey, John Ross. How you doing, buddy?

Fine, Daddy.

ELLIE:
Oh, Clayton, it's so good to be home.

CLAYTON: I tell you, getting your mother
away from this ranch...

...is like performing a minor miracle.

[ELLIE SIGHS AND CLAYTON CHUCKLES]

ELLIE: Well, I don't want to travel again
for along time.

J.R.: Everything is just the way it was
when you left, Mama.

BOBBY: We did send a few
of the wedding guests home.

[CLAYTON CHUCKLES]

Mmm. There's nothing in the whole world
as sweet as Southfork air.

CLAYTON: Mm-hm.
ELLIE: Mmm.

Do you know that Athens has smog?

Ha. Didn't seem to slow her down
when it came to shopping.

Hi, welcome home.

Miss Ellie, I'd like you to meet
your niece, Jamie Ewing.

- Hello.
- Jamie.

Jamie, this is Miss Ellie's husband,
Clayton Fallow.

- Hi, Jamie.
- Pleasure.

Jamie, you're so young.

I would have thought Jason's daughter
would have been older.

Someone closer to Bobby's or J.R.'s age.

ELLIE:
But you're only...

Twenty-five.
And I don't even know what to call you.

JAMIE:
Miss Ellie or Aunt Ellie.

Oh, well, whatever
you're more comfortable with, dear.

I like Miss Ellie.

Well, you seem to favor your father.

ELLIE:
He was tall and so are you.

I think Jason and Jock
were the same size.

Well, why don't we all go inside?
Have something cool to drink. Come on.

Well, Jock always said that Jason
was hopeless in the marriage department...

...so I'm not surprised
that he married late.

JAMIE:
Ha, ha. I hear tell that Mama did plan it.

J.R.:
Here, I'll get it, hon. I'll get it.

JENNA:
Clayton, did you ever try their ouzo?

CLAYTON:
Yes, I liked their brandy better.

Ellie liked the tsipouro,
but I found it a little too sweet.

Well, I remember when I was in Greece,
my favorite dish was the, um, moussaka.

CLAYTON: That's right,
you spent some time in Europe.

BOBBY: That's when she was
trying desperately to forget me.

JENNA:
Ha, ha, ha. Major mistake of my youth.

One which I hope you'll remedy
as soon as possible.

Thank you. Absolutely.

ELLIE:
Had your daddy been sick very long?

No, but he hit the bottle
long and hard sometimes.

I think that weakened his whole system.

- That's what caused Digger Barnes' death.
JAMIE: Yeah.

Daddy, Jock and Digger Barnes
were pretty close.

Well, they were inseparable for a while.

I thought that they would go on forever
in business together.

ELLIE:
But Jason had wanderlust...

...and Digger had a fixation on that bottle
very early in life.

I understand they brought in
a field in East Texas.

- Yes.
- Uh...

That was the one
Sam Culver was involved in.

Sam was Donna's first husband.

They leased a field
that Digger had his eye on...

...and they worked it
for almost three months.

The three of them were so far in debt...

...I thought they were gonna have to get
down and dig with their bare hands.

Ha. I remember they hit a gusher
on the 89th day.

ELLIE:
And they paid off all their debts...

...and I didn't see Jock for a week.

ELLIE: That's how long they celebrated,
the three of them.

Yeah, Daddy told me about that well.

He, uh, he said he made a vow,
that if it didn't come in...

...he was gonna stop wildcatting
and open a haberdashery. Ha, ha.

Ha. I doubt if he'd have kept that promise.
He used to take me out to the fields.

I never saw a man more excited
in my life.

J.R.: I was with him once
when he brought in a gusher.

I never heard a man yell so loud.

I can still hear the joy in his voice.

My daddy used to love wildcatting.

Trouble was as soon as the well came in,
he'd get bored.

He didn't wanna stick around.

He couldn't wait to get on
to another unexplored field.

Then, he never changed.

No, I guess not.

Did he ever tell you the nickname
that Jock and Digger gave him?

Nickname?

Why, sure. Tumbleweed.

JAMIE:
Tumbleweed Ewing.

ELLIE:
Right.

Because he just couldn't settle
in one place for very long.

Jamie, you know things about
the Ewing family that I'd almost forgotten.

I don't know about the rest of you, but
I'm ready for a thick slice of Southfork beef.

JAMIE: I know.
J.R. said the Ewings always dine at 7.

J.R.:
That's right.

Tradition has always played a big part
in the Ewing family.

BOBBY: Charlie's not home?
- No, she's staying at Susan's.

- Oh...
Brandy?

No, thank you.

That was a silent ride home.

[BOBBY SIGHS]

I just felt uneasy tonight.

- Why? Everything went well.
- I know.

Family seemed to have a good time.

No, no, I was concerned about Clayton.

- I thought you liked Clayton.
- I do.

I'm real glad Mama married him.

So, what is it?

[BOBBY SIGHS]

J.R. and I had an argument
a couple of nights ago.

I wanted to take down
that picture of Daddy that's hanging.

J.R. didn't.
And I let him talk me out of doing it.

Do you think that picture
bothered Clayton tonight?

Oh, absolutely.

Honey, that picture is a symbol
of the place that Daddy had--

Ha, still has at Southfork.

As if the picture wasn't enough...

...the whole family took
a trip down memory lane tonight.

All we talked about were the Ewings.

Bobby, it's possible you're overreacting.

Clayton knew the situation...

...the family he was getting into
when he married Miss Ellie.

I mean, maybe
he's a lot tougher than you think.

Maybe you're right.

Anyway, it's a problem
that Mama and Clayton...

...are gonna have to work out
between themselves.

Hey, I changed my mind.
I'll have that brandy.

[JENNA CHUCKLES]

Isn't it funny that scene! or later...

...children start to believe that
their parents are no longer grown-up...

...can't solve their own problems?

I guess Mama never had any trouble
making the decisions up till now.

But her youngest son has.

Oh?

There was a little matter concerning us that
you could have settled very easily tonight.

Um... The wedding.

That's right.

You could've told Miss Ellie
that we've finally...

...absolutely decided
to have the wedding at Southfork.

And we could have set a date.

And instead, we talked about
Tumbleweed Ewing and oil drilling.

Ha. That's right.

I tell you what.

We'll go right back to Southtork right now,
settle this thing. Wake everybody up.

We'll settle it tomorrow.

Are you sure you can wait till tomorrow?

I'm sure.

I don't wanna upset you.

I'm not upset. Heh...

BOBBY:
All right.

[SIGHS]

You know something,
tonight really got me to thinking.

RAY:
Hmm?

I hope you're not thinking abut running off
and wildcatting in Alaska.

That would put a strain on our marriage.

Especially since you know
I'm not the perfect husband.

Oh, I'm thinking of running off all right,
uh, but with you.

You know, in the four years
that we have been married...

...we have never had a honeymoon.

I thought that's what we were on
all the time.

[RAY CHUCKLES]

Listening to Miss Ellie and Clayton...

...talk about Corfu and Mykonos
and exploring the Parthenon, uh...

Don't you think that sounds romantic?

[SCOFFS]

Urn, I'm gonna be heading over
to Fort Worth for a cattle auction.

Maybe you'd like to go along with me?

- I'm going to bed.
- Heh...

Hey, wait, what about the time
I took you to New York?

- Doesn't that count for a honeymoon?
- No, it does not.

But don't you ever get
the feeling of wanderlust?

[DONNA SIGHS]

You mean like old Tumbleweed Ewing?

[SIGHS]

Yes, that was an unfortunate topic
of conversation.

Especially it being Clayton and Miss Ellie's
first night back at Southtork.

[SIGHS]

Did you see Clayton
when he got all quiet...

...when the family started talking
about the good old days with Jock?

Yeah, I saw him.

I'm sure this Jamie Ewing
is a nice enough person...

...but it certainly was the wrong time
for her to be there.

It would have been a lot easier for Clayton
to deal with today's Ewing...

...rather than to be reminded
of the ghosts of Ewings past.

Do you think Clayton and Miss Ellie's
marriage is in for a rough time?

I think that the affection
they have for each other...

...is a really strong foundation.

But I do believe that Miss Ellie
is not meeting Clayton halfway...

...in settling their differences.

Tsk. Well, Clayton and Miss Ellie
are both sensible people.

I think they'll work it out all right.

Well, I hope so.

Because if not, I'm afraid
Miss Ellie's gonna have to decide...

...between Southfork
and Clayton Fallow.

It was quite a surprise finding Jamie here,
wasn't it?

She seems to be a lovely girl,
doesn't she?

Yes, she does.

Well, can you imagine, at her age...

...knowing all the things she seems to know
about the oil business?

And you know, sometimes, I can just hear
Jason's voice when she speaks.

I mean, it'll be a tum 01a phrase
or a look.

You know.
I think that she has Jason's eyes.

What's the matter, Clayton?

Nothing. Just a little jet lag.

Well, then, you better come to bed.

I think this room could use
a little brightening up.

Oh. Well, I've never thought it was dark.

It's very cheerful in the morning.

Oh, wallpaper looks a little dull...

...and I think we could change
a few pieces of furniture.

I noticed the little wear and tear
on that fabric on that chair there.

Well, why don't we talk about it
in the morning?

It's been a full day.

I'm too keyed up.

Maybe a little brandy
will help me unwind.

Been along plane trip
and a lot of talk tonight...

...and I haven't the slightest idea
what time my body thinks it is.

Don't wait up for me.
You must be exhausted.

Cheer up, J.R.

You might as well accept the fact
that Clayton is here and he's hereto stay.

It's difficult for me, Sue Ellen,
you know that.

I understand, but please
just stay out of their lives.

It would only hurt Miss Ellie.

I'm gonna do everything I can
to come to terms with Clayton Fallow.

And what about Jamie?

Have you accepted the fact
that she's a Ewing?

That she's Jason's daughter?

[J.R. SCOFFS]

But, J.R..
she knows things about Jock and Jason...

...and even Digger
that only family could know.

Well, a lot of those things
could have been wild guesses.

There are plenty of ways of finding out
about people, you know that.

- But she doesn't have your resources.
- Now, how do you know that?

We don't know a damn thing
about that girl.

A bunch of things
that Mama and Jamie talked about...

...happened long before Jamie was born.

Even Mama started forgetting
about a lot of them.

J.R., you're making Jamie out
to be devious...

...when actually, she's just a very simple,
straightforward, young woman.

[SCOFFS]

- Come on, Sue Ellen.
- Oh, come on, J.R.

How do you explain the fact that she knows
that Jock called Jason Tumbleweed?

Even you don't know that.

Just because she knows his nickname
doesn't mean anything.

Hell, John Ross doesn't know
half the nicknames people call me.

That's because he's too young
to know words like that.

- You're gonna read all night?
- No, no, just for a minute.

I'm all wound up
after that conversation tonight.

Uh, ah, wait.
you're gonna lose my place.

You can always find your place.

SUE ELLEN:
Is this supposed to relax me?

J.R.:
Couldn't hurt.

You still live here, Jock.

It's still your house.
