Dallas (1978–1991): Season 8, Episode 11 - Barbecue Five - full transcript

J.R. is delighted that no Barnes are in attendance at the Ewings' annual barbecue at Southfork but he receives a shock from Jamie which spoils his fun.

Here's to picnics, Ewing style.

I'll say.

I believe
he wanted to see his daughter.

Jenna, this is is a guy who has lived off
of one can or another.

One woman or another his entire life.

This is the kid that was
so rude to me in the office.

I've had it with you.

[MARILEE SCREAMING]

I'm going to be married.

I know. To me.

You're not a Ewing,
you're a troublemaker.

I'll show you who's a Ewing
and who belongs here.

[TELEPHONE RINGS]

Ewing Oil.
[ANOTHER TELEPHONE RINGS]

- Just a moment.
KENDALL: Ewing Oil.

KENDALL: I'm sorry, Bobby Ewing isn't in.
- J.R., Mr. Bill's on Line 1.

SUE ELLEN: You're gonna be great.
JAMIE: I don't know.

SUE ELLEN: I'm sure you'll learn the duties.
JAMIE: We'll see.

KENDALL: Good morning.
PHYLLIS: Good morning.

- Good morning.
- Morning.

Phyllis and Kendall,
I'd like you to meet Jamie Ewing.

She's the new receptionist.

- It's nice to meet you, Jamie.
- Oh, thank you.

- Same here.
- Pleasure.

Ready to start?

As ready as I'm ever gonna be,
I suppose.

- Great. Then I'll show you to your desk.
- Super.

- Bye.
KENDALL: Bye-bye.

[PHYLLIS TALKING INDISTINCTLY]

Nhs. Ewing, JR. is 0“ (he phone.
Let me to.“ him you're waiting.

Thank you.

J.R. [ON INTERCOM]:
Yes?

- J.R., Mrs. Ewing is here.
- All right, coming out.

SUE ELLEN: Thank you.
- You're welcome.

JAMIE: How do I know who's important?
PHYLLIS: I'll give you the names...

Well, hello, darling. How you doing?

Fine, J.R., thank you.

PHYLLIS:
Put the caller on hold and buzz it in.

I don't believe you really brought Jamie
in here today.

- I said I would.
- I was hoping you weren't serious.

J.R., everything's gonna work out fine.

You've got your heart set on it,
I'll go along.

- But I don't like the idea.
- She's bright.

She's gonna have to play
by the same rules.

- If she doesn't do her work, out she goes.
- Don't you pick on her.

I have better things to do than that.

I have a few errands to do. Why don't I
come back later, we'll have lunch?

Oh, I'm tied up in a meeting for lunch.
It's gonna take a couple of hours, anyhow.

I'll see you tonight for dinner.

- All right, darling.
- Goodbye.

- Bye, Jamie.
- Oh, bye.

- Good luck.
- Thanks.

Okay, bye-bye.

[TELEPHONE RINGING]

Hello, Ewing Oil.

Which Mr. Ewing
would you like to speak to?

Sure, I'll put you through to his secretary.
Hold on.

I don't want to keep you
from your patients.

That's all right,
I don't have another appointment until 2.

Have a seat.

Pam, I'm a little worried
about what you're doing to yourself.

First, this whole salvage operation.

And now, flying down
to look at the parts of Mark's plane.

Well, I hadn't planned to.

It was after Mr. Jackson left last night.

I realized that I had to see
that cockpit section for myself.

Jerry, did you know that the door was
unlatched and seatbelts were unfastened?

Doesn't prove anything.
Impact of the crash could've caused that.

I don't think so.

Then you're convinced
that Mark staged the accident?

Yes.

That he wanted everyone to believe
he died in the accident?

He wanted me to believe it.

Pam.

You said Mark was a fighter.
You didn't believe he would commit suicide.

- That's right.
- Well, I agree with that.

Now that we have some evidence
that he may have gotten out alive...

...I have to move on to the next step.

I need that list of unorthodox health
practitioners that you said you'd get me.

Pam, most of those people are quacks.

I know that, but you promised me.

I had second thoughts.

Jerry, I need that list.

I have to do this.

All right.
I'll finish the list and I'll get it to you.

Thank you.

It's my fault.

I was not completely truthful
with Charlie.

Oh, Jenna, it's over and she understands.

I should have realized
she's old enough to understand.

[SIGHS]

I could have told her more about Naldo.

I could have explained why your name
was on the birth certificate.

Well, you didn't know she was gonna find
the birth certificate.

Children do snoop around the house.
It's a perfectly normal thing for them to do.

They're curious.

Honey, I don't understand why
you're going on like this. It is over.

I mean, we've explained everything to her
and she accepts it.

No.

Now I have to let Charlie meet Naldo.

Oh, now, wait a minute.

After everything he's done,
how can you let him anywhere near her?

I know what he is,
but Charlie has to know too.

Bobby, it I don't let her meet him,
Naldo will always remain a mystery for her.

She'll build a fantasy image of him
as someone special. Kids do that.

Jenna, he's so unpredictable.
I think it's risky.

I think the greatest risk for her wellbeing
is to keep them apart.

Maybe.

But it still worries me.

[PEOPLE TALKING INDISTINCTLY]

Right over here.

Now, Mr. and Mrs. Fallow,
just take your time.

I'll be in my office,
I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Thank you, Mr. Mansfield.
Well, this is the reception area.

Well, it's bright and spacious.

It has about the same square footage
as my suite in Houston.

I think with the right color scheme,
it could be quite attractive.

Uh-huh.

Well, come on.
I'll show you the office I would use.

Okay.

Oh, this is nice.

I don't know whether to bring my furniture
up from Houston or buy new.

Oh, it's a lot of trouble, isn't it?

- You mean moving?
- Yes.

Mmm...

I mean, your company headquarters
has been established in Houston for years.

Almost 30 years.

What about your staff?
Are they moving up too?

Some of them.
I expect to lose my secretary.

And that's a shame because
she runs the office when I'm not there.

She'll be a real loss.

Oh, Clayton, are you sure?
You're uprooting everything.

I don't think I have much choice.
It's along commute for me.

Well, but" Uh...

Maybe we could buy a house near Houston
and split our time.

Part of the year there
and pan of the year in Dallas.

Ellie, I don't think
you could live that way.

You know how you miss Southfork
when you're not there.

[SIGHS]

That's true.

I don't think I can have a wife in Dallas
and my business life in Houston.

Then you're going to take the suite?

[SIGHS]

Thirty years in Houston.

I need time to think about it.

Ah, pardon, miss.
I'm looking for a Miss Mandy Winger.

Would you have any idea
where I can find her?

Mr. Ewing, what are you doing?

Just delivering some flowers.

Oh, they're beautiful.
You don't waste any time, do you?

Oh, I've been known
to travel on the fast track.

How'd you find me?

I could say I looked your name up
in the phone directory...

...but you have an unlisted number.

I was getting calls
from a lot of creeps and weirdos.

I talked to the owner
of the restaurant where we met.

He told me the name of your agency
and the rest was easy.

They're not supposed
to give out my address.

Well, maybe they don't think
I'm a creep or weirdo.

[LAUGHS]

You're lucky you found me at home.
I don't spend much time here.

- I take it you're involved with somebody?
- Son of.

I'd be real surprised if you weren't,
but I thrive on competition.

I kind of expected you'd say that.

You seem like a man who knows what
you want and knows how to go after it.

[LAUGHS]

I'm afraid I'm getting that reputation.

Why don't you put those flowers
in some water?

We can go out for some lunch and talk,
get to know each other.

This is usually my day for shopping
and all kinds of chores.

Oh, I think lunch is a much better idea,
don't you?

I don't wanna be cooped up
in some restaurant.

- How do you feel about picnics?
- Picnics?

Do I look like a man who likes to sit around
on the grass with ants and chiggers?

I tell you what,
let's just see where the day takes us.

You've a van; pelsuas'we man,
JR. Ewing.

Let me take these inside,
I'll come right back.

Yeah, good, good.

[INTERCOM BUZZING]

Yes, Jackie?

JACKIE [ON INTERCOM]: Cliff, Mandy's an the phone.

- Hello.
- Cliff.

You'll never believe
who is waiting outside for me.

- Who?
MANDY [ON PHONE]: .I.H. Ewing.

And he wants me
to go to lunch with him.

[LAUGHING]

Terrific. You just keep
your eyes and ears open.

Are you sure you want me to do this?

CLIFF [ON PHONE]:
Of course I am.

Ah, he starts coming on to you,
you just get out of there.

Okay. Bye.

LYDIA:
Do you mind if I call you Pam?

PAMELA:
No, of course not.

You're not very comfortable about this,
are you?

No, I'm not.
I've never been to a psychic before.

Although my friend told me
that you're very good.

I don't bite.
I don't do any weird incantations.

I have supper on the table
for my husband when he comes home.

Does that surprise you?

I suppose it does.

Shall we get started?

Touch the cards.

Which ones?

All of them, lightly.

Relax, Pam.

Sony.

Now, pick out seven cards,
hand them to me.

You've suffered
two great losses recently.

Yes.

Two men who cared a great deal about you
have left your life.

Yes.

Lot of family problems.

Pick out five cards,
hand them to me.

There's only one thing
you really want to know.

You want to know if the man you love
is coming back into your life.

He never meant to hurt you.

He felt he needed to get away from you
for your own good.

He believed it was the right thing to do.

He's a tall man. Athletic man.

He'll be coming back into your life.

You mean, he's still alive?

Of course he's alive.

JAMIE:
Hello, can I help you?

I don't need any help.

- Ah, excuse me, what's your name?
- Where are the secretaries?

They're all out to lunch.
Maybe I can help you.

You can't go in there.

Ha, the hell I can't.

Well, looks like everybody's
deserted the ship. Where is J.R.?

I'm not allowed to give out
that information.

Well, aren't you cute. “I'm not allowed
to give out that information.“ Hm.

I know what that means.

J.R. is probably ordering room service
for two in one of Dallas' better hotels.

Skipping the entrée
and going directly to dessert.

Well, if he gets back today,
tell him Mrs. Stone was here.

Come in.

Bobby, can I talk to you for a minute?

Oh, sure. What's on your mind?

I don't know if I'm gonna be able
to do this receptionist job right.

I mean, some lady just came in here
looking for J.R.

And I was ready to punch her out.

Oh, wait a minute.
You were ready to punch who cut?

The rudest person that I ever met.

She called herself Mrs. Stone,
and believe me, the name fits.

That's Marilee Stone.
Did she say what she wanted?

No, she just barged into J.R.'s office
before I could even ask her name.

Don't worry about it.

Marilee just thinks everybody in the world
should know who she is.

I wonder what she's got going with J.R.

[TELEPHONE RINGING]

Here, I got it, I got it.

Don't worry, I'll explain everything.
You're doing fine.

- Hello?
- Bobby? It's me.

Oh, hello, Jenna.
Um, if you'll excuse me.

Okay. Thanks.

- Is everything all right?
- Yes, it is.

I just wanted to tell you I've arranged
to take Charlie to meet Naldo this evening.

At his hotel?

No, I picked a neutral location.
The Ventura Restaurant on McKinney.

This whole thing makes me feel
real uncomfortable.

JENNA [ON PHONE]: I have to do it for Charlie.

I know. If you think it's right.

All right. I'll talk to you later.

Bye-bye.

Oh, J.R., it's beautiful.

Better than some little old park, isn't it?

Here you go, sir.
Will there be anything else, Mr. Ewing?

No,no,uh...

- We'll serve ourselves.
- Yes, sir.

Here's to picnics, Ewing style.

I'll say.

Tell me, where are you from?
You weren't born in Dallas, were you?

Ohio. A little town
not too far from Akron.

When the wind was wrong,
you could smell the tires being made.

[LAUGHS]

Well, what'd your father do?

He ran a pretty good-sized machine shop.
He was a wonderful man.

My mom was pretty terrific too.

I think they're the ones that gave me
the good feeling I have about myself.

How do they feel about your...?
Well, your modeling?

Well, my daddy died a few years ago.

But I guess Mama always expected
I'd become a model.

[SIGHS]

Just out of high school though...

...they sent me to secretarial school
for protection.

They always said,
“If you can type, you can always work.“

Ha, ha.

It'd be a shame to hide
that beauty of yours in an office.

That's the way I felt.

Oh, I've always known I was beautiful.
That's the reason men come on to me.

I do have a brain but they usually don't
stick around long enough to find that out.

- Oh, he admires your brain, does he?
- He does.

But that's not the whole story.

Remember when you first saw me
in the restaurant...

...and right away you made
a little pass at me?

Guys have been doing that
since junior high.

But this man...
When I first met him, I liked him a lot.

We spent a whole evening together.

A few days later,
he didn't remember who I was.

Really?

If you ask me, he doesn't sound
like he's playing with a full deck, ha.

Hardly. He's very successful.

Does he treat you well? Nice little gifts
and creative lunches like this?

I've never had a lunch like this
with anyone before.

No, my boyfriend's big on takeouts.
We eat out of paper containers a lot, ha, ha.

You enjoy that?

Well, frankly.
I'd prefer a little more luxury.

Well, that's the meaning
of the Ewing name, luxury.

Can I take it you wouldn't refuse
another invitation to have lunch with me?

Where are we gonna eat next time,
your jet?

Well, we could. I got one.

I love this private box. Is it yours?

Well, I've been thinking of buying it
for tax purposes.

I just closed a very lucrative deal
with a friend of mine...

...Jeremy Wendell,
he's the president of Westar.

Have you heard of it?

Who hasn't in Texas?
Um, do you do a lot of business with him?

I haven't in along time...

...but recently, we've done some
very interesting things together.

How about a little more champagne?

Yes.

Then I wanna hear all about
how J.R. Ewing operates.

You will. You surely will.

NALDO:
Good evening.

Hello, Naldo.

Charlie, this is your father,
Renaldo Marchetta.

Hello, Charlotte.

Hello.

Well, for a beautiful young lady.

A beautiful flower.

Thank you.

And one for her beautiful mother.

Thank you.

I am sorry, Charlotte, it has taken
such along time for us to finally meet...

...but now, I intend to make up
for that lost time.

Mr. Marchetta,
your table's ready for you.

Thank you. Please.

- Well, good evening.
CLAYTON: Hello, J.R.

SUE ELLEN: Good evening.
J.R.: Mama.

I thought you only had
a luncheon appointment.

It just dragged on and on.

Say, whose convertible is that
I saw in the driveway?

That's Jamie's new car.

Oh, really? Wonderful.

First day at work
and she can already afford a car.

No, J.R., I bought it for her.

You bought it for her?

Sue Ellen, it's okay.

You can return the car. I'll take the bus.

Jamie, you can't possibly take a bus
from Braddock to downtown Dallas.

You need that car.

Darling, most of my executives
don't have a free company car.

I never heard of giving one to a receptionist
so she can get to work.

J.R., if Sue Ellen wants to buy Jamie a car,
why do you object?

All right, fine. I withdraw my objections.

Well, I think it's time to go in to dinner.
Has anyone heard from Bobby?

Ah, he said he had an appointment.
I guess he's out with Jenna.

[PEOPLE CHATTERING INDISTINCTLY]

--All of this magnificent countryside.

And when I was a little boy,
I was a cowboy too.

Do they have cowboys in Italy?

Well, only in the movies.

But in the small town near Home
where I grew up...

...my family had a home
with beautiful grounds.

We had a stable and horses...

...and I learned to ride
when I was very young.

I always thought of myself as a cowboy.

What did you call your horse?

Tony.

It's a good Italian name, no? Tony?

But it was also the name...

...of that horse ridden by the great
American cowboy, Tom Mix.

[LAUGHS]

You never had a horse named Tony.

Yes, I did.

Yes, and we also had one named Silver.

- That's the Lone Ranger's horse.
- Yes.

I told you that I would see
many American films when I was young.

Mostly Westerns.

And that is how
I learned to ride bareback.

You see, one day.
I went to see a friend...

[NALDO SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY
AND CHARLIE LAUGHING]

[DOORBELL RINGS]

Who is it?

BOBBY:
It's me.

Hi, what a nice surprise.

Why didn't you call me?
We could have had breakfast together.

- Are you in a hurry?
- Ha, why should I be?

I just have my boutique
and your investment to look after.

I-- I didn't call because I did something
last night that I'm not very proud of.

I didn't wanna talk about it
on the phone.

What is it?

I saw you and Charlie and Naldo.

I was at the restaurant.

You spied on us?

Jenna, this thing about Naldo coming back
and wanting to see you and Charlie...

...and you going along with it,
I think was a big mistake.

- How long were you there?
- Not very long.

Well, if you'd stayed...

...you would have seen that it was
nothing more than a pleasant dinner.

What kind of overtures did he make
to you and Charlie?

Bobby, he didn't ask for anything.

He told stories to Charlie
about his family, about growing up.

That was the evening. He was very nice.

How can you suddenly he
so trusting of this guy?

I think he was sincere
when he said he'd changed.

I really believe
he wanted to see his daughter.

Jenna, this is a guy who has lived off
of one can or another.

One woman or another his entire life.

He only married you
because he thought you're an heiress.

Well, he can't be after Charlie
for her money.

- I think you're treating this too lightly.
- I'm not treating it lightly.

Well, he almost wrecked your life.
He damn near succeeded in breaking us up.

Bobby, isn't it possible
that the man has grown up?

That he realizes he has a daughter
and he wants to know her?

I just don't think
people suddenly change like that.

Now, think about it.
Didn't he say anything else last night?

No. Bobby, let's forget about last night.

I don't want you upset over Naldo.

I love you.

I waited too long to be with you.

I know you love me.

But I just can't help being worried
that Naldo's coming back here...

...has something to do with us.

[ANGELA AND CHRISTOPHER
SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY]

MISS ELLIE:
Hello, Christopher.

Grandma! Grandma!

[LAUGHING]

Oh, my goodness. Hello, day--

Well, look at you.

I swear he grows an inch
every time I see him.

PAMELA:
Well, he eats enough to do that.

Oh... Give Grandma a kiss, hm?

Oh...

I wish he were around all the time.
I really miss him.

Well, I know he feels the same way.

You know, I'd-- I'd love both of you
to come to the annual barbecue.

It's just a few days off.

Oh, thank you, but I don't think so.

I just can't, Miss Ellie.
I-- I really can't deal with it.

How about something cool to drink?

I'd love some iced tea.

Angela, would you get us some iced tea?

And take Christopher in
and get him dressed.

- Yes, ma'am.
- Okay.

Pam, I know how difficult
the divorce was for you...

...but you seem to have made
an adjustment now...

...and, and so has Christopher.

I really haven't had a chance
to tell you how sorry I am about Mark.

It would have been nice
to see you two settled.

Well, thank you, Miss Ellie.

But for the first time since the plane crash,
I have some hope.

Hope? What do you mean?

There's a possibility
that Mark is still alive.

I don't understand. Ah--

Are you saying
that he survived the crash?

Well, I sent some salvage men
down to the plane crash site.

They brought up a piece of the plane
and it looks like Mark got out.

But that doesn't mean he's still alive.

Yes, but I don't believe
he went down with that plane.

I think he's off somewhere
trying to find some kind 01a cure.

And, Miss Ellie, I'm going to find him.

Oh, Pam, you have so little to go on.

Oh, no. There's so much you don't know.

You see, Mark was a fighter.
He would never have given up.

I think he was just trying to protect me.
He's still alive.

I know it.

[MEN SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY]

Hi!

Eddie! Eddie!

Well, I didn't expect to see you.

I came over to apologize
for losing my temper.

Well, there's no need to do that.
I should-- I should have told you sooner.

And I understand what happened.

A lot of guys hit on you
because, uh, you got money.

Yeah.

[SIGHS]

But nobody's ever told me
to get out before.

Well, Lucy, if you think
I'm after you because, uh...

Because of your money, there's not much
I can do to change your mind.

- Well, I still wanna befriends.
- Yeah, so do I.

[SIGHS]

Maybe I'm just oversensitive.

But I've really been trying
to make a life of my own.

Don't, uh...?
Don't you get along with your family?

Yeah, I like my family.
It's just that, uh, sometimes, I feel like...

Like I'm being swallowed up
by the Ewing name, the Ewing fortune.

I don't know who I really am.

You're a real nice girl, Lucy.
That's all you need to know.

Does that mean
we can still see each other?

Yeah, if you like.

- Yeah, I like. Ha, ha, ha.
- Ha, ha, ha.

[EASY-LISTENING MUSIC PLAYING]

Jeremy, I need to talk to you.

This can't be by accident.
How did you find me here?

It was simple.
I had my secretary call your secretary.

She has orders
never to give out that information.

Well, I guess it's filtered down even to her
just who I am now.

Well, she'll be filed
as soon as I get back to the office.

Now, Cliff.
I would appreciate it if you would leave.

I have very few opportunities
to eat alone.

It gives me a chance to think
or simply to rest my mind.

I cherish these moments.

This won't take long.
I have something to tell you.

If it's about the merger, forget it.
That ship has sailed.

I know.
I'm still not interested in the merger.

It's just that
now I'm at liberty to tell you why.

And I suppose you're going to.

Yes.

I happen to have it
on very good authority...

...that J.R. Ewing was behind
the merger all along.

But you see, what I can't figure out
is just what he offered you...

...to get you to try
to swallow Barnes-Wentwonh.

What the devil are you talking about?
Are you out of your mind?

JR. Ewing?
He has no influence with Westar.

That's like the tail wagging the dog.

I just happen to know that you and he
just concluded a very big deal.

- Isn't that true?
- Barnes...

I would have thought
with your success in the Gulf...

...you would have closed the book
on J.R. Ewing.

But he still haunts you, doesn't he?

No.

You expect him to put you away,
to wipe you out.

Never. Not anymore.

Cliff, go away.
You're giving me indigestion.

[SIGHS]

Look who's here, Mama.

I see.

Hello, Jenna.

Charlie, I think it's time you went inside
and started your homework.

Okay.

Thanks for waiting with me.

You're welcome, Charlotte.

How dare you come out here uninvited.

Oh, I do not see why I need an invitation
to visit my own daughter.

Because Charlie and I are a family.
We have a routine.

You are not part of that family.

I don't want our lives turned upside down.
I don't want her upset.

But did she seem upset? No.

Naldo, I thought it was important
for Charlie to know who her father is.

I expect to be informed when and where
you're going to be with her.

Ah, you're still as headstrong
as when we were married.

But something has changed since then.

You are even more beautiful new.

Oh, please, Naldo.
Don't give me your Old World flattery.

I'm going to be married.

Yes, I know. To me.

What are you talking about?

You're not going to marry Bobby Ewing.
We are going to be remarried.

You're crazy.

Bobby and I are gonna be married
in less than two weeks.

No, it will not happen.

So, what do you intend to do?

Perhaps I will have to fight a duel
with Bobby Ewing over you.

No one fights duels anymore, Naldo.

Oh, no, not that kind of a duel.
Not with the swords and the pistols, no.

No, there are other ways.

Jenna, I intend to many you myself.

[BAND PLAYING COUNTRY SONG]

[LAUGHING]

J.R., you truly look happy.

Oh, honey, I am. I really am.

I just put together a wonderful deal
with Jeremy Wendell at Westar.

The beautiful wife is here and this is
the best damn barbecue I can remember.

Everyone does seem
to be enjoying themselves.

There's more to it than that.

This is the first time in years
a member of the Barnes family is not here.

- That makes my day, I'll tell you.
- It sure does.

Uh, by the way, who is that young man
that's dancing with Lucy?

I don't know.
She didn't introduce him to me.

As long as he's not a Barnes,
that's all I care about.

She changes her men
like other women change their stockings.

J.R., that's not fair.
She really was in love with that Trotter boy.

Talking about true love, look at Bobby
over there with Jenna and her little girl.

And my daddy.
he says that he skis in the Alps.

He learned when he was really little.

His father taught him
and he wants to teach me.

Charlie, there's John Ross.

BOBBY: Hello, partner.
- Hi, Bobby. Hi, Jenna.

Hi. You wanna dance with Charlie?

Maybe later,
but right now, I'm going to get a hot dog.

Wanna come with me?

Why don't you go ahead?

JENNA: Go on.
- Okay.

Bobby, I'm sorry.
Naldo's all she wants to talk about now.

Listen, don't worry about it.
It's new to her.

She'll... She'll ease up.

I hope so.

Why? Has there been another incident...

...like when you found her
on the doorstep with Naldo?

He's called a few times.

- You didn't tell me that.
- It wasn't important.

Not important? We're getting married.
That gigolo is making another play for you.

I haven't seen him
and I haven't let him see Charlie.

Don't make a big deal over Naldo.

Well, it's a little hard for me to forget...

...that you ran away from me once before
and married him.

Bobby, please.

Let's forget about him
and just enjoy the day.

[BAND PLAYING COUNTRY MUSIC]

They're playing our song.
What do you say?

Let's go. What are we waiting for?

CLAYTON:
I don't see Donna around. Is she here?

I came alone.

Oh?

I tell you, walking out of the house,
this call comes in.

This guy named Collins, he's the foreman
down there on Krebbs 1.

They started talking about, uh.
core samples...

...and how the dirt is
and how deep they're going.

I can't get a word in edgewise.

I walked out of the house, got in the truck,
drove over here alone.

Far as I know,
she's still talking on the damned phone.

Ah, I'm sorry about that, Ray.

Well, Clayton, our marriage
has been through a lot of problems.

Donna's just a move! and a shaker
and I'm content to go out and punch cattle.

We are the number one odd couple
in Braddock County, I'll tell you.

[SCOFFS]

So,uh...

Things going any better
with you and Miss Ellie?

Or maybe we should have
both stayed bachelors, huh?

[LAUGHS]

You know damn well we'll put up
with our women no matter what.

We love them too much.

- Grandma.
- Oh, Lucy.

I want you to meet my friend,
Eddie Cronin.

It's nice to meet you, Eddie.

Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Ewing.

Well, actually, it's Mrs. Fallow now.

Are you the reason we don't see
much of Lucy anymore?

Well, I guess so, partly.

But mostly.
I guess it's because of her job.

- Breakfast at the diner started at 6.
- Diner?

Grandma, I'm gonna show Eddie
around Southfork.

EDDIE:
It's a pleasure, ma'am.

And so I decided that my business
was the only area of my life...

...that I can claim
as completely my own.

And I'm not ready for a business office
just down the street from Ewing Oil.

I'm not moving up. I'm gonna leave my
headquarters down in Houston for a while.

Can you keep tabs on things from Dallas?

I'll fly down a couple of times a week.

- Miss Ellie.
- Ray.

You're not moving your offices?

I'm not ready for a change yet.

Hi. I'm having a terrific time.

- This is great barbecue.
- You look like you're having a great time.

- You look real beautiful today, Jamie.
- Thanks, Ray.

Jamie, you and I danced so well together
at the Oil Baron's Ball.

How about this next dance?

Well, I'd love to.

[BAND PLAYING COUNTRY MUSIC]

Enjoy yourselves.

- Thank you.
- Bye.

It's disappointing.

What is?

Clayton's offices.
He'll exhaust himself commuting.

Well, Miss Ellie,
we didn't just talk about Clayton's offices.

He also told me how much he loves you.

Thanks, Ray. I needed to hear that.

Hi, Miss Ellie.

I was wondering where you were.

Could you excuse us for a minute, please?
I really need to talk to him alone.

Yes, of course.

Ellie, you have really
outdone yourself this year.

WOMAN:
I haven't missed a Ewing barbecue.

Let's go.

Why did you leave me like that?

I was on the phone
for a few minutes, Ray.

I waited for you for a half hour.
You were nowhere near finished.

It's my oil company. That's what
this whole stupid thing is all about.

I had it with your oil business.
J.R., Bobby, the whole Ewing family.

Seems every time two Texans get together,
that's all they talk about, the oil business.

- I've got it underneath my own damn 1001.
- So, what do you want me to do?

Sell my company so I'll be home
waiting for you when you get home?

[SCOFFS]

No, I don't want you to sell it.
Look, I get a little hot sometimes.

I'll learn to live with it.

I'd like to know how Cliff Barnes
found out about our deal.

And why he thinks
you had something to do...

...with my offer to merge
with Barnes-Wentwonh.

Jeremy, who knows what goes on inside
that pea-sized brain of that boy?

[LAUGHING]

He certainly is paranoid
on the subject of J.R. Ewing.

I'm not unhappy to hear that,
that's for sure.

Why don't you go have yourself
a good time, forget all about Cliff Barnes?

Well, all right, J.R., I'll try and do that.

Ha, ha.

Oh, I tell you, that really made my day.

What is it, J.R.?

Well, I just opened myself a new pipeline,
darling.

- Pipeline?
- Mm-hm.

Ewings have never been
in the pipeline business.

No, not that kind.

This one goes straight
into Cliff Barnes' head.

[BOTH LAUGHING]

CLIFF:
You're giving me a headache.

What do you think
you're gonna do with that list?

I'm going to take the list of practitioners
and find out it Mark contacted any of them.

Would you try to talk some sense
into my sister's head?

Cliff, this is something Pam has to do.

Well, you're as crazy as she is. Every--
Every person on that list is a quack.

Well, we'll find out how crazy I am
when I find Mark.

Come here, I don't mean it that way.
You're frightening me.

I just don't wanna see you
get hurt anymore. I love you.

Oh, I'll be all right.

Come on.

I heard about this farmer in East Texas
who's been holding out for 15 years.

He's never let an oil company
on his property to start testing.

Oh, you got an inside track.

I met his son.
Plays football for the University of Texas.

Ha, ha, ha, that's one contact
I never could have made, honey.

You interested in a joint venture?

Always am.

J.R., Sue Ellen's looking for you.

This is the kid that was so rude to me
in the office. What is she, a relative?

Well, I don't know. She says she is.

Why didn't you tell me
Mrs. Stone dropped in at my office?

I forgot because this woman
has no manners.

It's your manners that are in question here.
Mrs. Stone is a business associate of mine.

Is that the way you conduct business
herein Dallas?

By hugging and kissing a married man?

Who the hell do you think
you're talking to?

I've seen your kind before.

[SCOFFS]

Oh, yeah? Where has a kid like you
ever seen anyone like me?

Those Alaskan saloons where my daddy
used to drink all the time...

...were filled with females like you.

Filthy-mouthed brat!

I've had it with you.

[MARILEE SCREAMING]

You're not a Ewing,
you're a troublemaker.

You don't belong here.
Pack up your stuff and get out.

I'll show you who's a Ewing
and who belongs here.

Marilee, you all right, honey?
Did it go up your nose?

J.R.: Give me your hand, come on.
Let me help you out.

What are you doing?

Something I should have done
along time ago.

- Is she all right?
- Yeah. She's okay.

She wasn't hurt or anything.
She's just kind of embarrassed, you know.

Clayton, would you read this, please?

It's an oil lease form.

JAMIE:
No, tum it over.

It belonged to my daddy. Will you tell
the family, please, what that says?

Ellie, have you ever seen this?

I don't remember.

It's an old photograph of Jock, Jason.
Digger Barnes and Sam Culver.

It looks like they're near
the Discovery Well in East Texas.

Clayton, would you
read the paper, please?

CLAYTON:
Okay.

It looks like it was drawn up
by Sam Culver.

He must have been practicing law then.

I'll skip the wherefores and whereas.

It says here,
that the Discovery Well in East Texas...

...is the first asset of the newly formed
Ewing Oil Company.

And it also says...

...that the well, the field
and all future holdings of Ewing Oil...

...are owned jointly
in equal one-third shares...

...by Jock Ewing, Jason Ewing
and Willard “Digger“ Barnes...

...and their heirs in perpetuity.

Then what does that mean?

[SIGHS]

It means...

...that J.R. and Bobby may just have a real
fight on their hands for control of Ewing Oil.
