ROAD JACK"]

-62 bucks for an ad.

For what?

We're beating them away
with a stick around there?

Pretty girl walks in with a
briefcase, gives you a wink,

leans over the counter, and
you pay $62 for nothing.

Something I can
do for you today?

-Let's go.

-Get him in on three.

[sirens]

-Oh!

-Yeah, come on, man!

Come on, be a hero.

No, no, no.

Don't do that.

Don't do that.

Anyone comes through this
door, and she's dead.

[music - del shannon, "runaway"]

That's it.

Come on.

Come on.

Come on, be nice.

We're going.

Come on.

Get on the bed.

-Ah!

-OK, look at me.

Sh.

Sh.

Sh.

Sh.
Good.

Do what I say.

You're gonna do everything
exactly as I tell you, OK?

All right?

OK.

OK, that's good.

I won't hurt you then, OK?

This is gonna be your
big day, you know?

A real big day.

Yeah, you're gonna
be a celebrity.

[laugh] OK?

Now, you just be nice.

And you don't do
anything to get me upset.

OK.

HOSTAGE: Why-- why are
you-- are you doing this?

-Now, don't get me upset, OK?

You promise?

-Get behind the cars.

Get down.

Get behind the cars.

-You promise?
HOSTAGE: Yes.

-Do you?
HOSTAGE: Yes.

-Huh?

OK.

Hey, hey.

Yeah.

OK.

Come here.

Come here.

Come to me.

Come to me.

All right.

Hey, what's happening?

HOSTAGE: [crying]

-Out.

All here.

Yeah, this one I think, huh?

[tires squealing]

-What's wrong, Joey?
-He's got a hostage, Danny.

He took a woman off the street.

Stay away from the
front of the building.

I'm gonna go inside.

-Get yourself killed
like that woman up there?

Get the hell away from there!

-He shot a cop, Danny.

He'll kill her.

[gunshots]

-You get to a phone,
and you call the office.

-But--

-Now!

You, get some help here
and cover the back.

[phone ringing]

-Mike, we got a line
on Holman from Indiana.

-Well, how did you do that?

-Holman was calling from
Dressler's apartment.

The number's from a phone booth
near a gas station in Gary.

-So what are you doing
sitting around here?

Grab Holman's pictures
and a few other mugs

and go out there and
get them identified.

-We did that.

Struck out.
-Well, I know you struck out.

-Yeah.
-Do it again.

Show the picture to everyone.

Stop traffic, if you have to.

-I'll end up moving down there.

[phone ringing]

-Pardon me, huh?

-Clemens.

-Oh, nothing, sir.

I was just saying how eager I
am to carry out your orders.

-Mike, it's Joey.

-Hello?

Where are you?

All right.

We're on our way.

Cancel everything.

Let's go.

[music playing]

[gunshots]

What's going on, Danny?

-It started as a stick up.

[inaudible] responding was shot.

Joey chased the
guy into the hotel,

and he grabbed a hostage.

-He hasn't let up yet.

He's got to run out
of ammo sometime.

-Anyone else hurt?

-No.

-Do we know who the woman is?

-No.

I-- I ran around the corner.

And I was about
to pounce on him.

And he took the
woman off the street.

[gunshots]

HOSTAGE: [scream]

[crying]

-Exciting, isn't it?

Huh?

[laughs]

-I think every gun we point
at this nut feeds him.

-You want to have
these guys quit firing

until I find out where we're at?

[gunshots]

-Hold your fire!

Hold your fire!

-Come on.

Come on, sweetheart.

Let's play.

Play?

You want to?

Come on.

Come on.

-[whimpering]

-Let me show you something, OK?

Come here.

Come here.

Huh?

[gunshots]

[inaudible] shots gonna get me!

I got a day, a week, a month--
whatever it's gonna take.

Hey, I want some TV here.

Come on.

I want to talk to
some TV people here.

Come on, get some TV here!

Come on, I want to
talk to some TV people.

Get some TV!

[gunshots]

Get some TV here!

How was that?

That was good, huh?

Did you see that?

Did you think that was good?

Did you?

Don't lie to me, OK?

We'll be friends if you
don't lie to me, OK?

OK.

[gun clicking]

-Hey.

Hey, where are you going?

-I gotta get her out of there!

-Shut up!

Shut up and listen.

Shut up, now.

Shut up.

Listen to me, Joey.

You wait these guys out.

You use psychology and strategy.

You just don't go
in their busting

the door down and shooting.

Do you understand?

Do you understand?

Huh?

You all right?

You all right?

Now give me that bullhorn.

You all right?

This is Lietuenant Torello, MCU.

What's your name?

The policeman you
shot is gonna live.

We can work this out
so nobody gets hurt.

Just tell me what you want.

GUNMAN: I want TV people!

-You let the
hostage go, and I'll

get you all the TV
people you want.

GUNMAN: I want them to see
her and me together on TV!

I want everybody to see us!

-I'll only promise you the TV
people if you let the lady go.

If you let her go,
then the TV people

will come here in big
trucks and everything.

GUNMAN: They'll be here anyway.

I don't have to give
her up for that.

-Do you want make a trade?

Trade me for the lady.

And I'll come in.

The TV people will
cover that, too.

GUNMAN: No!

-I'll come in without a gun.

I'd still like to talk to you.

I can come in, and we can talk.

And you can tell me
what's bothering you.

GUNMAN: I got what I want.

Don't you?

Isn't this what we want?

I love this.

[gunshots]

I love this!

[police chatter on radio]

-Danny.

-What's up?

-We have some decisions to make.

-What's wrong?

-Grossman's got some good
information on Holman.

I don't want to miss him.

And this can go on for days.

-Well, what do you want to do?

-Wait it out.

Not make any bum moves.

If we do, we play right
into this guy's hands.

Take Grossman.

Get a couple hours sleep.

And go to Indiana.

You see that phone both?

Get the number.

Anything happens, call me.

-OK.

Nate, come on.

[chime]

-This is it.

-Considering the phone company
told us where the phone booth

was, I figured I'd
find it in here.

-OK.

-Come on, Nate.

We got a lot of
people to talk to.

-You know, uh, I feel oddly
close to this phone booth.

It's like it's only
a phone booth, right?

But I found it.
it's like the phone

booth doesn't want me to leave.

-This phone booth stinks
like Frank Holman.

-Yeah.

-Come on.
Come on.

Let's go.

That phone booth right
over there across the lot--

do you ever use it yourself?

-Sure, I use it all the time.

DANNY: Do you ever notice anyone
using it with any regularity.

You know, uh,
making calls, taking

calls maybe once or twice a day?

-Well, you know, a
lot of people use it.

-Yeah, I know that.

But, uh, anyone
more than others?

Anyone just kinda
hanging around it.

EMPLOYEE: Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Sure.

-Well, who?

Can you identify him?

-Yeah, he's right there.

-Uh, no, no, no.

Beside him.

-I don't know.

-Here.

-Mugs?

Looking for a wanted guy?

-Yeah, something like that.

EMPLOYEE: Wait a minute.

This guy looks familiar.

Yeah, this guy.

I remember him
'cause he's so ugly.

Spits a lot.

-Are you sure?

-Yeah.

I remember ugly people.

Makes me feel good.

[gunshots]

MIKE: This is Torello.

No change since the stand off.

-Uh-huh.

Well, I'm gonna brighten
up your day little bit.

MIKE (ON PHONE): How?

-We got an eyeball on Holman.

Yeah.

We followed up on him and
watched him go into a diner.

-Great work.

Where are you?

DANNY (ON PHONE): At the
corner of Cotner and Harriet.

-All right, listen to me.

Don't make a move
until I get there.

And get Grossman back here.

You got it?

DANNY (ON PHONE): With pleasure.

[gunshots]

-Listen to me.

I'm on my way to Indiana
on the Holman case.

[gunshots]

-What?

What about this?

-You guys handle it.

Grossmans' on his way back.

[gunshots]

[music playing]

-[screaming]

-Don't I know you?

Huh?

Huh?

Don't I know-- Don't I know you?

These things are on their way
to the FBI lab in Chicago.

When they link you to
the Novak murder case,

you're not gonna
go to death row.

You're gonna go straight
to the electric chair.

-Hey, I didn't know that
mooches doubled for cops.

[grunt]

-If we get Holman on
this Novak killing,

he'll roll over
and give us Luca.

[music playing]

-Well, this Torello's
pretty angry at you, fella.

What's behind it?

-He's not a straight
shooter, Sheriff.

See, I was working for Torello.

And then he crossed
me, so I came here.

And he followed me here.

-What were you doing for him?

-Well, I was getting him
all kinds of headlines,

you see. 'Cause I-- I
was blowing the whistle

on organized crime in Chicago.

-Is there organized
crime in St. Louis?

-Oh, yeah.

Oh, absolutely.

Hey, it's like there's
an invisible empire here.

See, St. Louis is riddled
with organized crime.

Really.

Say, you got a safety pin?

I busted my zipper.

-Where's Holman?

MAN: There were no charges.

Mr. Holman was released
on his own recognizance

pending further investigation.

-What?

[music playing]

-We got an eyeball on Holman.

MAN: You're gonna take
Holman out to Vegas

and stash him there?

RAY: No.

Holman is completely safe and
out of the way where he is.

-Ray, you ever been into
that nightlife in Vegas?

The chicks, the action-- oh,
are we gonna have a good time.

[music playing]

[chatter]

-[laughs] I'll cover the back.

-Ah, waitress?

-Well, [inaudible].

Hang on.

No, no.

No, no.

This is still good.

This is perfectly good.

All right?

You put this on the
bottom here, right?

This is a business.

Don't waste food.

People are starving in China.

-Yes, sir, Mr. Torello.

-There's a guy at the
counter, Mr. Torello.

He's a big slob.

And he's got a problem
with the sausage.

-All right.

I'll take care of him.

-OK.

-Hey, Ricky.

You want to sell me that truck?

-Hey, you got a problem, buddy?

-Yeah, you see this sausage?

-Yeah.

-It's like the kind
they make in the joint.

-What do you know--

-Don't I know you?

[fighting noises]

Where you going, Frank?

-[grunt]

-So what, I got to go
through this with every jerk

you bring in here?

I'm gonna starve to death.

I ain't eating nothing.

-Well, it's very simple, stupid.

You talk now.

You eat later.

-Look, I ain't got nothing
more to say to this guy.

I would like him removed
from the room, please.

-[laughs]

-You earn your way onto
the FBI's Most Wanted

list for ordering people around?

I suggest you give
us some cooperation.

-Yeah, Frankie.

How about a little
cooperation, huh?

How about Bartoli,
Luca, and Taglia?

-I ain't got nothing to say.

Besides, what's in it for me?

-You have the file on
the fugitive warrant?

-The fugitive warrant is for
armed robbery and murder.

-The government doesn't
deal with murderers, Holman.

-Look, I didn't murder no lady.

That's just Torello trying
to stack a deck against me

to-- to cover his own action.

-Oh, yeah, right.

MIKE: How about Vince Noonan
and the Novak woman, huh?

-Let's get Mr. Holman arraigned.

-Look, you get him out of
here, and I'll talk to you.

-What did you-- what did say?

-I said that my
jaw's a little sore

from where the
lieutenant punched me.

I'm having trouble talking.

-You're a pimp, Frank.

A big pimp.

-I'd say you got away
lucky, Mr. Holman.

-Can we get on
with this, please?

-We'll get Mr. Holman arraigned,
see that he has counsel,

and then we'll move ahead.

-Good.

-Do you have a cigarette?

-You know that Holman's
gonna try to deal again.

-Mike, don't worry about it.

I know Alcott.

He's a good man.

He wants what you
want, what we all want.

Hey, you got your man.

Relax.

You guys did great work.

-Ah, you work on
a guy this long,

it's just hard to let loose.

-I understand.

Come to court, then.

Go on back to Chicago.

If there's something going on
in there, I'll find out for you.

-Thanks.

-All right, Frank, go on.

You were keeping
your nose clean.

-Yeah.

Yeah, I was-- I was trying
to stay out of trouble.

I mean, that's why I went
into the restaurant business.

I mean, I don't want
no trouble with nobody.

But it's here, too.

-What's here?

-The outfit.

The mob.

-Go ahead.

-I mean, I thought that I found
a place that I could steer

clear of that kind of
influence, you know?

-Let's get back on track here.

-I could make you
a Supreme Court

candidate if I told
you all I know.

But I get complete immunity.

-In exchange for?

-Taglia, Luka, Bartoli,
and Lieutenant Torello.

He ain't right.

Yeah?

I mean, you know-- he-- you
know, he don't like to work

for his money, if
you know what I mean?

I mean, that's why he
followed me down here.

Every time I turn around,
he's got his hand in my face.

-He traced you here
and arrested you

so he could shake
you down for money.

Is that what you're saying?

HOLMAN: You got it, buddy.

You'll figure it out.

Torello is a very smart man.

-You think I just fell out
of that tree over there?

I got to take Torello's
word against yours.

BREITEL: Look, you don't
want to fight with me.

And don't make the mistake
of thinking I'm stupid.

When a fugitive on the
FBI'S Top 10 is apprehended,

it comes over the teletype.

Now, I just want to talk to
him before the arraignment, Mr.

Wolcott.

WOLCOTT (ON PHONE): I want him
arraigned in this jurisdiction

before any interrogation.

-What we're dealing with goes
beyond what you understand.

WOLCOTT (ON PHONE):
What I understand

is that this guy's a liar.

-I wouldn't jump to conclusions.

WOLCOTT (ON PHONE): Every time
we grab one of these worms,

they want me to make
a deal for anything,

even giving up their mothers.

BREITEL: Nice talking
to you, Mr. Wolcott.

[phone bangs]

-If he's not in custody
and you didn't release

him, then where the hell is he?

-He's been transferred to
another federal district

under the custody of
United States Marshals.

-Why wasn't he arraigned?

-I don't know why.

I wish I could tell you.

-He's my prisoner.

Don't I have some say so as to
what the hell happens to him?

-Ordinarily.

Look, I don't know
what's going on.

I don't like it
anymore than you do.

-Murder and robbery aren't
enough to hold him then, right?

-Holman's in federal custody.

-Breitel.

-Breitel.

Breitel went over my head.

I walked in this morning,
and Holman was gone.

-Thanks.

-What kind of games are
they playing around here?

-I don't know, but
I got a feeling

you're gonna get
kicked around some.

-Oh, yeah?

Breitel is just a stooge.

And I got more
important things to do.

Hey, Chief.

Breitel just stole
Holman from me.

-Don't you have a hostage
situation still going on?

-Yeah, and it's
being taken care of.

You knew about Breitel
and Holman, didn't you?

-Yeah, cool down.

-Well, why didn't you stop it?

-'Cause I didn't know about
it till they grabbed him.

So Breitel get Holman
to turn over on Luka.

He gets to play his hand first.

We're after the same
thing here, right?

We want to nail Luka.

Do you have a problem
if it's the Justice

Department that does it?

Or are you so
personally involved

that it's got to be you.

-Yeah, I am that
personally involved

that it's got to be me.

And I don't have a problem
with the Justice Department.

I could live with the
Justice Department.

I'm talking about one
bureaucratic goof.

Breitel is a fool.

-He's a fool.

-And he's gonna blow this case.

-So let him make his mistakes.

Then we'll pick up the pieces.

We'll make our own case.

-If there's a case to be made.

-The Feds supersede
our authority.

He's an interstate felon.

I mean, what the hell
do you want to do?

Assault the federal
lockup with the MCU?

Shoot it out with the US
Marshals and grab Holman?

-Well, what are you
gonna do about it?

-Well, I'll send a confidential
memorandum to his superiors

about your expertise, because
your knowledge of Holman.

That means you should
interrogate him.

And he should be
in your custody.

So calm down.

There's nothing we can do
until the deck is dealt.

-Oh, that's great.

That's really wonderful.

Confidential memorandums, huh?

Confidential memorandums?

[music playing]

[gunshots]

How long has this been going on?

-About 10 minutes.

He's hitting us with
everything he's got.

[gunshots]

-Danny, me, you, and
Joey are going in there.

When I give you
the word, cover us.

Nate, you and Wolver
stay in on street.

Keep the uniform
guys under control.

You ready?

Now!

[gunshots]

[water running]

HOSTAGE: [crying softly]

[moaning]

[whimper]

[sigh]

-Want a piece of gum?

Huh?

[music playing]

[gunshots]

[gunshots]

-What's with Holman?

What happened?

-Look, Danny.

Don't talk to me about
Holman, all right?

The G has got him-- Breitel.

We got this goof in here
with this woman for two days.

Come here.

Go downstairs and tell your
sergeant for one minute,

then throw everything they've
got this guy for one minute.

Then stop the firing.

-Hey, Mike.

-Go ahead.

-Mike.

-Go ahead.

-What are you doing?

[gunshots]

-Hold your fire!

Hold your fire!

[music playing]

-Whatever happened
to, uh, wait him

out-- psychology, strategy,
all that? [laughs]

-Want to see what
happened to it?

-Yeah.

-I'll show you what happened.

-Stop it.

Stop it.

Wait, stop it.

Please!

-Shut up.

Shut the hell up.

-[crying]

[gunshots]

-What the hell's
going on up there?

-I don't like it.

-OK, hit it!

[gunshots]

MIKE: Now!

[gunshots]

-Ah!

[gunshots]

[moaning]

HOSTAGE: [crying]

[whimpering]

[door opening]

[door closing]

-My name is Harry Breitel.

You are gonna spend the
rest of your natural life

in a federal penitentiary.

-Yeah?

Before we go, could
you loosen these

so I could have a cigarette?

-If you cooperate, I am
empowered to give you

enough immunity so that you
could extricate yourself

from a life of crime and
lead a productive life.

-Yeah, that's just what
I've always wanted.

When?

-It depends on the cooperation.

-What do you want?

-Manuel Weisbord, Philip
Bartoli, Paul Taglia, Ray Luka.

Anything else you
can come up with?

-Well, all of them ought to
be worth complete community.

-Give me something.

-I don't know Weisbord.

-[sigh]

-Bartoli, Taglia, Luka--
no, that's not enough.

I want Weisbord.

-All right.

Well, what am I looking at?

-Freedom, 10 years, life.

-10 years is life.

-No Weisbord.

You made your choice.

-Wait a minute.

Sit down.

I'm thinking, all right?

It's hard.

-There's not time for thinking.

-What's a crooked cop worth?

Yeah, a big deal
cop on the take.

I gave him 50 Gs worth
of stolen jewels myself.

What's he worth to me?

-Give me a name.

-You give me a deal.

-Name first.

-Torello.

-If you're telling
me the truth, it's

a citizenship award
at the very least.

-Money?

-Forget it.

HOLMAN: All right.

Now, I gave him 50
Gs myself, just me.

You think about that.

And you can double that when
you figure the whole MCU's

on the take.

-Can you give me Bartoli,
Taglia, Luka, and Torello?

-All of them.

They're all tied together.

-No charges.

Protective custody.

-In one of them country
club joints, right?

Golf.

I always wanted to
learn how to play golf.

-Done.

-Get him out of here.

Make sure he doesn't
talk to anybody but me,

especially the Chicago PD.

Every fine-tuned sense
in me as a prosecutor

told me that Torello was dirty.

[theme music]
