Covert Affairs (2010–2014): Season 3, Episode 9 - Suffragette City - full transcript

After shooting Simon, fatally, Lena escapes being discovered by a delivery man and by Annie, who hallucinates while rushed to hospital for critical surgery. Arthur orders an investigation and tends to Lena's thesis that Annie is a traitor who wasn't properly screened as a recruit. Auggie risks his and a career-bribed polygraph expert's career to conduct his own investigation, while the CIA director officially sanctions Annie's dishonorable discharge in hurry. It leads Auggie to the passport forger, but Lena anticipated that.

(AUGGIE READING)

What's going on, Jai?
Come with me.

Okay. I didn't want
a tuna melt, anyway.

You're being reassigned.

Who are you? I'm Lena Smith.
I'm your new boss.

I think you were
being underutilized.

I want you to do high security
clearance on Simon Fischer.

I need a sweep drive.

Head to the Marrakech Souk.

ANNIE: Simon has a computer tablet
that I think I can gain access to.

LENA: He's in love with you.

ANNIE: Where are you going?
Cuba.

The mission to Cuba...

I can't use my regular passport.
I know a guy.

GUERRERO: No one here will
know she left the country.

You matched the stamps?

And the crease
on the Morocco page.

LENA: Good luck.

Auggie, I'm coming in.

We can go in together.

(ALTERNATIVE ROCK SONG
PLAYING)

DRIVER: Anybody home?

(KNOCKING ON DOOR)

(SIREN WAILING)

Excuse me, you just
passed the hospital.

Isn't that where you're
supposed to take me?

I think I'm dying.

SIMON: Those aren't
my instructions.

You don't need a doctor.

What you need
is a nice cup of tea.

Besides, you look the
picture of health to me.

How...

What is this?

Questions only lead to answers.

Where's the fun in that?

EMT: Left para-sternal
G.S.W., two entry wounds.

She's pulseless.
Distended neck veins as well.

E.R. DOCTOR: Got it. EMT: Time of
injury is about 10 minutes ago.

Get two wide bore I.V.'s.

Let the blood bank know we're
gonna need a lot of "O" neg.

Get the open chest tray ready.
EMT: About 40 units.

E.R. DOCTOR: Call the O.R., let them know
we might be sending them a G.S.W. Heart.

(DISTORTED) Let's open the
chest, let's see what we can do.

Come on, young lady,
come back to us.

(THEME SONG PLAYING)

I'm Annie Walker's
emergency contact.

I got a call that she was here,

but nobody will tell
me what's going on.

Is she okay?
Come with me.

Mr. Anderson?
I'm Dr. Lerman.

Oh, hey, how is she?

Annie sustained two gunshot
wounds to the chest.

The second bullet pierced
her left ventricle.

We opened her chest
in the E.R.

And we revived her heart.

We're bringing her
into the O.R. Right now

to try and repair the wound,

but it's a very
delicate surgery.

Is she gonna be okay?

We'll know more in a few hours.

Thank you, Doctor.

(SIREN WAILING)

(WIND WHISTLING)

Hello, Annie.

How did you...
Did you...

Tea?

No, thanks.

One lump or two?

Really, I'm fine.

Right.

Sweet enough as you are.

Mmm, that's lovely.

Now then, you're
in great danger.

From who?

Blackbird.

You need to find Blackbird.

And when I do?

I see.

I'm afraid we won't be seeing
each other again after this.

I actually thought it would
be easier this time.

What?

Walking away from you.

I'm sorry for everything.

I'm not.

(DOOR OPENS)

I didn't want
a tuna melt anyway.

(ENGINE STARTS)
(GASPS)

(FOOTSTEPS SOUNDING)

(FOOTSTEPS STOP)

(FOOTSTEPS CONTINUES)

(FOOTSTEPS STOP)

(FOOTSTEPS)

(DOOR OPENS)

(SIGHS)

What happened?

(DOOR CLOSES)

Thank you all for coming
in on such short notice.

We'd like to get you all
up to speed on the events

that have transpired
in the last 24 hours.

Earlier, Lena Smith presented
me with compelling evidence

that Annie Walker has been
passing classified intel

to an F.S.B. Operative
named Simon Fischer,

who was also her lover.

A few hours ago, they were
found shot in her kitchen.

Now, we're laboring
under the theory

that there was a dispute
over the escape plan.

Simon fired first. Annie
shot back, killing him.

She survived.
She's still in surgery.

As Lena is most familiar
with the evidence,

she'll be briefing you
on the specifics. Lena.

You all should have a
dossier in front of you.

Please open to the first page.

You'll find an account Annie
held in an offshore bank.

The account number was found
on the wallet that was on her

when she was shot.

Annie received regular
deposits in this account,

each in the amount
of $10,000 U.S.

Turn to the next page, please.

You're looking
at the flight plan

for Simon Fischer's
private plane.

Departed D.C., stopped in
Mexico and ultimately Cuba.

Annie bought a forged passport
from an off-book cobbler

in order to travel with Simon.

The next page is a list
of classified documents

Annie provided
to Simon Fischer.

Though it's still unknown

how she secreted these
documents out of Langley,

or where she obtained
the sweep drive

which we found
hidden in her home,

evidence on the drive
suggests she used it

to pass the documents
to Simon digitally.

Annie engaged Simon
Fischer under my purview.

I should've
discovered it sooner.

But Annie was plucked
from the farm

before she finished training
and was put into the field.

We are rushing people through,

trying to put boots
on the ground

instead of doing
our due diligence.

And now because of that,
we're all here

in the middle of the night,
dealing with the consequences.

Hey, man.

Coffee.

Thanks.
No problem.

How's she doing?

Still in surgery.
Jeez.

What happened?
I mean...

Was she in some kind
of trouble or something?

Well, considering she was shot,

I'd say yeah, she was in
some kind of trouble.

Right, sorry.

So,

you must be the last person
to talk to her, huh?

I don't know.

The hospital called
about 30 minutes after

I got off the phone
with her, so...

How did you know she called me?

Ah...

The D.C.S. Requisitioned
a recording of it.

I pulled the drive
for him myself.

Requisitioned?

For what?

Has anyone called
her sister, Danielle?

No, not yet.

We can't notify
the family until we

clarify a few things.

Well, when the time comes,
I'm making the call.

Auggie...
I'm doing it.

It should come from someone who's
not trying to prosecute her sister.

It's been a long night, Auggie.

I haven't slept much either.

I've been at the hospital
waiting for a doctor

to pull a bullet
out of my friend.

You didn't come here
to give me an update

on Annie's condition, did you?

Word is, Annie's being
accused of treason.

Tell me that's not true.

(SCOFFS) This is bullshit!

Hey! This is bullshit, sir.

There is no way
that could be true.

What proof do you have?
I wanna see it.

The evidence is above
your clearance, Auggie.

Annie Walker is no traitor.

I don't care what evidence
you have, it's wrong.

I'm gonna do whatever
I have to do to prove it.

(KNOCK ON DOOR)

I'd like access to the
evidence against Annie.

Please.

I don't have the
authority to grant it.

And I'm guessing you're here

because you've already been
denied by the person who does.

I have been here long
enough to know what happens

when even the hint of
an accusation like this

gets hurled at an operative.

Annie is on an island
right now.

Auggie, I know how
difficult this is for you,

and I'm having a hard
time with it myself.

It all seems impossible.

But the evidence
that Lena presented is...

It's compelling.

You actually believe
she's guilty?

I don't know what I believe.

That's because I can't be
objective and neither can you.

So what good is looking at the
evidence gonna do her, or you?

No, you're right,
I'm not objective.

So screw Lena's evidence,
I'll go out and find my own.

Because whatever she has
that paints Annie as a traitor

isn't worth the paper
that it's printed on.

Okay, you see, this
is exactly why people

without an emotional
stake in Annie,

i.e. Not you or I,
are vetting everything.

That includes having
Lena herself polygraphed.

Oh, hey.

Hey, Lieber, I need
you to do me a solid.

Oh, name it.

I wanna sit in.

No, no.

A solid is a ride
to the airport

or telling your wife you were
with me when you weren't.

What you just asked for is
neither of those things.

I don't have a wife.

I'll be quiet as a mouse.

No one will ever
know I was here.

I can't.

You still want a transfer
to U.K. Desk, right?

Yeah.

I got a buddy over there,
he's an analyst.

He's transferring to Berlin
station at the end of the month.

I can set you up with an
interview with Andrew Branch

before anyone else knows
that job is available.

You're quieter than a
mouse, you understand?

You're a dead mouse.

Not a single squeak.

POLYGRAPHER: Were you assigned
an operative named Annie Walker?

LENA: Yes.

And did she initially
exhibit any behaviors

which you found to be suspect?

No.

Did Annie propose the mission
to cultivate Simon Fischer?

Yes.

POLYGRAPHER: Did you
agree to this mission?

LENA: Yes.

POLYGRAPHER: Were you aware Annie and
Simon were romantically involved?

No, I wasn't.

All right, what's the verdict?
Fact or fiction?

So far she's telling the truth.

This is a waste of time.

Anybody with Lena's background

would have no problem
beating a polygraph.

You know, for a dead mouse, you
do an awful lot of squeaking.

POLYGRAPHER: Do you think
Annie had any involvement

in the death of Jai Wilcox?

(SIGHS) I don't know.

POLYGRAPHER:
Yes or no, please.

If those are my only options,
I'm gonna have to say yes.

(SIGHS)

POLYGRAPHER: Were you aware of
Annie's plans to go to Cuba?

Did Annie notify you...

I know that you're
an exemplary operative

and you've done a lot of great
things for this agency. Hey.

But if you believe that Annie
could kill anyone in cold blood,

let alone someone
she cared for,

you don't know what the
hell you're talking about.

I am so sorry about this...

This is outrageous.

Who's your supervisor?
It's okay, Leo.

I understand why your anger
is directed at me, Auggie.

But this is an inappropriate
way to deal with it.

We're all frustrated here.

You know...
Let's go.

(DOOR CLOSES)

Are you out of your mind?

ARTHUR: I understand.

Give me an hour
to gather the materials.

Yes, sir.

Here you go.
Thanks.

The D.C.I. Is assembling
a small committee

to determine whether or not
Annie should be decommissioned.

I have to brief them
in 30 minutes.

But it hasn't
even been 24 hours.

This seems like
a rush to judgment.

Well, the last six months have
hardly been stellar for this agency,

between Jai murdered
on U.S. Soil

and now a possible
traitor in our midst.

The D.C.I. Is being squeezed
from all sides for answers.

The only way
to relieve the pressure,

sew this up
as soon as possible.

But how can they decide
anything until Annie wakes up?

She should have the right
to defend herself.

I spoke to Annie's doctor.
She's stable.

But there is no telling when

or even if she'll
regain consciousness.

GUARD: All right.

Thanks.

Annie Walker's friend, right?
Yeah.

What do you need?

I'm here to pick up
her personal effects.

A gentleman already collected them earlier.
He had a warrant.

Gotta get me one of those.

Did she have
something you needed?

Well, that's what I was
hoping to find out.

There's an itemized list of
her belongings in her chart.

I can make a copy
of it for you.

I'd love that, yeah, thanks.

Okay.

Uh, it should take a few minutes.
Okay.

DANIELLE: I said it'll just take a few minutes.
Please, have a seat.

Danielle.

What are you doing here?

I'm here to conduct
a polygraph examination.

On you.

Okay.

This isn't really a good time.

Funny how it's
never a good time

when I need something from you.

Let's do it.

Is your name
Anne Catherine Walker?

Yes.

Do you reside in
Washington, D. C?

Georgetown, yes.

Did you like the miso black cod

I made for your
birthday last year?

What?

You barely touched it.

You claimed you had a
really big lunch that day.

Did you like my cod?

Yes.
(POLYGRAPH BEEPS)

Come on, Danielle.

(CLEARS THROAT) Do you ever intend
to keep the promises you make,

or do you know they're
empty when you make them?

What?

I didn't compose the questions,

I'm just here to
conduct the interview.

Please answer the question.

I intend to keep
every promise I make.

(POLYGRAPH BEEPS)

I'm not lying.

Well, the machine
indicates otherwise.

And frankly, I'm more inclined to
trust an electronic device than you.

You know what?
This is over.

Did you ever consider
what effects

joining the C.I.A. Would
have on your family?

Were you aware of the potential
dangers and chose to join regardless?

Nothing was ever more
important to me than you.

I don't know where
your allegiance lies.

But your actions suggest
it isn't with me.

(GROANS)

Hey, good-Iooking,
need a ride?

NURSE: Here you go.

Would you mind
reading this to me?

I left my reading glasses
in my car.

(SIGHS) Of course.

Sorry.

Uh, let's see...

Pants, shoes, blouse, earrings,
wallet, U.S. Passport...

Passport? Why would
she be carrying that?

Maybe she was on her
way out of town?

No, she was
on her way to see me.

You wouldn't happen to have the number of
that passport on that list, would you?

I do.

AUGGIE: Barber, I need
you to run a passport.

I want to know
if it's real or a forgery.

Yeah, hit me.

Bravo, 9-2-8-3-7-4-6-8.

No, it wasn't issued by State.
It's definitely a forgery.

One of ours?

Nope, C.I.A. Didn't
make it either.

Must've been created
by an off-book cobbler.

Outstanding.

Annie copping a bogus
passport is good news?

The best news I've had all day.

And I need you
to get me the addresses

of the best cobblers
in the area.

I'm gonna make
a few house calls.

(KNOCK ON DOOR)

(DOOR OPENS
IN THE DISTANCE)

Mr. Guerrero?

Hello?

Hello?

Hello?

Mr. Guerrero?

(DOOR OPENS)

(DOOR CLOSES)

(SIGHS)

TEAM LEADER:
Clear! Clear!

Anything?
The place is clear.

Must've snuck out while
I called for back-up.

I heard a car on the street

about two minutes after I left.
Diesel, I think.

What do you wanna bet that was
the killer's getaway car?

Killer?

This wasn't here before.

I may be blind, but I
know the difference

between a cheap rug
and a dead body.

All right, so what do you
imagine happened here?

I don't know.

(SIGHS)

Do you see any flowers
or scented candles around?

No, I don't see
anything like that.

I could've sworn
I smelled lavender earlier.

All right, I'm taking you home.
You need sleep.

How much sleep do you
think I'm gonna get

knowing some committee's trying
to burn Annie at the stake?

It's nothing personal, Auggie,

they're gonna make a decision
based on the evidence.

If all they're looking for
is evidence to indict,

that's all they're gonna find.

You gotta help me convince
Arthur to give me those files.

Somebody's gotta
fight for Annie.

I agree, which is why
I've been sifting through

every scrap of evidence,

looking for anything
I can to help Annie.

I care about her, too, Auggie.

Can you trust me
to fight for her?

Yeah.
Okay.

Let me take you home.

I wanna go to the hospital.
Auggie.

I can get a cab.

(SIGHS) Come on,
I'll drive you.

(KNOCK ON DOOR) Yeah?

(DOOR OPENS)

Oh, thank you.

What is it?

Well, it's not official yet.

But I wanted you
to hear it from me.

The committee decided
to decommission Annie.

(SCOFFS)

Auggie was right.

D.C.I. Is not interested
in due process.

He just wants to
assign blame and move on.

Well, the operatives
in this building

depend on him to protect them.

When there's overwhelming evidence
that one among us is a traitor,

he has no choice
but to act swiftly.

Mmm.

Maybe Lena was right.

Maybe we brought
Annie in too early.

No, she was ready, Arthur.

She had more raw talent
than anyone I have ever seen,

and in the two and a half years
that we've worked together,

she's proved herself to be
an invaluable operative.

Invaluable.

Even if she was lying
to you the entire time?

You have never doubted
she was guilty, have you?

You didn't even
try to defend her.

So, what about the operative

that depends on you
to have their back?

Annie Walker

is looking very, very guilty.

It's hard to accept.

I know.

You should talk to her.

Can she hear me?

The truth is, nobody
knows for sure.

But I like to think she can.

There's some food
at the foot of the bed.

You look like you could use it.

Thanks.

(SIGHS)

Annie, hey, it's me,

Auggie.

You know, the guy that
gave you a Corvette.

Since I have your
undivided attention,

I'd like to share
my thoughts about how

Billy Collins' poetry
is overrated and derivative.

If you agree with this,
say absolutely nothing.

(SNIGGERS)

Now, the thing about this whole witty
banter deal is it kind of takes two people.

Otherwise, it's just a guy by
himself being incredibly clever.

I miss you, Annie.

I have for a long time.

Things have been different
between us since Barcelona,

and it's all my fault.

I've been, uh, closed
off and distant, and...

I can't tell you
how sorry I am for that.

I don't know
if you can hear me,

but I need you to wake up.

I know you're not a traitor

and right now you're the only
one who can help me help you.

I need you, Annie.

I never need anyone.

But I need you.

(SIGHS)

We got intel that Blackbird
is staying in room 309.

The only way to get up
there without being seen

is to use the service
elevator in the kitchen.

ANNIE:
Sounds like a plan.

How do I get to the kitchen?

Do you trust me?

With my life.

(ROMANTIC SONG PLAYING)

Have I ever told you
how beautiful you are?

I clean up nicely, don't I?

I'm not talking
about the clothes.

You should probably
get upstairs.

The song's not over yet.

We could dance
a little while longer.

There's nothing I'd like more,

but you and I both know
this isn't our song.

We'll dance again, Walker,

but not until
the music's right.

Until then...

The access card to the kitchen

is in my right coat pocket.

Let's do this.

(SIGHS)

Hey.

I thought you could use that.

Thanks.

The nurse said she's almost
done changing Annie's bandages.

About five more minutes.

Look, I just want you to know what
happened in polygraph yesterday

won't leave the polygraph room.

I don't blame you for having
the reaction that you did.

If there's anything
I can do for you...

Anything at all, just ask.

I'm here to help.

Thanks for the coffee.

It was Lena.

When I found Guerrero's body,

I was positive that
I smelled lavender.

By the time you got
there, it was gone.

I just caught that scent
again at the hospital.

It wasn't flowers,
it was Lena's perfume.

Tom Ford, Lavender Palm.

It couldn't be a coincidence.

She was in his house.

Nobody dislikes Lena
more than I,

but to accuse her of murder
based on the perfume she wears

is tantamount
to career suicide.

She was there,
Joan, I'm not crazy.

I'm not saying you are.

Just help me connect
the dots, okay?

Um...

Why would Lena kill the cobbler

that forged Annie's passport?

Maybe Annie didn't buy the passport.
Maybe Lena did.

But, why would she do that?

And why keep it off-book?

Unless Lena was aiding
and abetting Annie.

Maybe Lena's the
real F.S.B. Double

and Annie is just her patsy.

It makes sense why she'd kill Guerrero.
Think about it.

As long as he's alive,
he can prove

not only that Lena knew
Annie went to Cuba,

but she helped her get there.

And if anyone finds that out,

her entire cover
starts to unravel.

It's a plausible theory,
but it's all conjecture.

Can you prove any of it?

That's why I'm here.

(SIGHS) Auggie...

I have gone as far
as I can on my own.

I need access to that evidence
to get the rest of the way.

And unless I get it, you
can expect my resignation.

Because this is a time
of extreme duress,

I'm going to pretend
you didn't just demand

I violate a dozen protocols
by passing you intel

well above your clearance.

But try this tack with me
again and I assure you,

you will not enjoy
the consequences.

(SIGHS)

Now if you'll excuse me,
I have to call tech support.

I'm having trouble accessing

the evidence files
on the Manhattan server.

I'll have to recite
my access code

and under no circumstances
can I have you overhear it.

Do you understand
what I'm saying?

I think I do.

Good.

WOMAN: It was at this time Lena Smith
terminated the mission to cultivate Fischer

because it failed
to yield intel.

Operative Walker was remanded

to the domestic
protection division.

Unbeknownst to Smith,
operative Walker

continued to pursue Mr. Fischer
of her own accord.

Smith testified to tasking
operative Walker...

The venture capitalist. She's
suspected of being an F.S.B. Agent.

Smith provided evidence
of Walker's misconduct...

Out of six or seven deliveries
that afternoon alone.

(RECORDING FAST-FORWARDING)

I saw the light and a red
Volkswagen in the driveway,

so I assumed someone was home.

But it was real quiet.
Other than the bodies,

I didn't see anything
out of the ordinary.

Just cars and houses.

Same every other block
in the neighborhood.

Other than the bodies,
I didn't see anything...

See anything
out of the ordinary.

Just cars and houses.

Same as every other block
in the neighborhood.

Other than the bodies, I didn't
see anything out of the ordinary,

just...

ordinary, just cars and houses.

MAN:
D.M. V. Database.

Registered to Lena Smith.

Gray 2011 BMWX5 diesel.

I didn't expect to see you
leaving here anytime soon.

I think I found something.

Then I'm coming with you.

Good, you can drive.

I think I'd prefer that, actually.
Where are we going?

To throw a Hail Mary.

(SIGHS)

Mr. Goodman?

May we speak with you
for a moment?

Are you guys cops or something?

We have
a follow-up question

about the statement
you gave the other night.

Yeah, no problem.
Shoot.

On the night you
found the bodies,

do you remember seeing a gray
BMW X5 parked anywhere nearby?

A gray BMW.

Gray... Actually,
you know what? I do.

You do?

Are you sure it was a BMW?

Yeah. Yeah,
I'm positive.

I'm in that neighborhood
a lot and I remember

because it was parked
underneath the big tree

where I always park the truck.

Gotta keep the cookies
in the shade, you know?

Act now...

JOAN: The same color,
make and model car

as the one registered to Lena

was parked less than a
block from Annie's house

on the night she was shot.

Well, I'm not sure it's
enough to implicate Lena.

But I can make a damn good case

to postpone
decommissioning Annie

until we can look
into this further.

(PHONE RINGS)

ASSISTANT: I have the
hospital on line one.

Hello.

I see.

All right.
Thank you, Doctor.

What is it?

Annie woke up.

Just for a few minutes,
but she was responsive.

The doctor says that's
a really good sign.

LENA: Look who's finally
come home to roost.

You're Blackbird.
I should have known.

Funny how each mirror makes
everything look so different.

(GUNSHOTS)

The entire time
you were looking for me,

you should have been looking
in the mirror, Blackbird.

You know who you are?

Who you really are?

Look into your heart.

It's the only thing
that doesn't lie.

Got you!
(GASPS)

(MOANING)

(MOANING)

What are you doing?

C.P. R! Her heart
stopped. Help me!

(GRUNTS)

(CRIES)

JOAN: Lena!

We need some help over here!

(GROANS)

AUGGIE: Joan?

(ALARM RINGING)

Help!

(TALKING INDISTINCTLY)

(SIGHS)

(MELANCHOLY SONG PLAYING)

This is Joan Campbell.

I want every possible way
out of DC sealed off.

Train stations, bus
stations, airports.

I want them all shut down.
