Coach Prime (2021–…): Season 1, Episode 1 - Episode #1.1 - full transcript

Deion Sanders is truly
legendary.

The world knew me as Prime Time.

It is Prime Time, Deion Sanders.

But for everything I'd done,
for everything I'd become,

I felt like there was something more,
something bigger than myself.

Deion Sanders, the football Hall
of Famer, World Series competitor,

and two time Super Bowl champion,
taking over as head coach

at the historically black university.

So, I stepped out on faith

and made the decision
that would change my life.

Believe.

But it just wasn't about
football. I wanted to change lives.

Coach Sanders
says it's about raising

these young men to be
pillars in the community.

I wanted to
change the way things work.

Across the five yard line,
touchdown Jackson State.

Just too easy.

So we came to Mississippi
and shook things up.

Isaiah Bolden on the
return, into the end zone!

Touchdown Jackson State!

And laid the foundation
for what we're destined to be.

Tigers won the SWAC
championship after a near perfect season.

Now that all eyes are on us,
we're taking it to the next level.

Deon Sanders has a
potential and ability now to

take up the landscape of college football.

To be a legend is one thing,

but to constantly raise the
bar and change the narrative

of conversation as to why
you're a legend is another.

And anytime you do that,
you gonna ruffle some feathers.

Jackson State paid a guy a
million dollars last year that

was a really good division one
player to come to the school.

It was in the paper and
they bragged about it.

Man, stop this Coach Saban.

It is insulting to that kid, Travis
Hunter. It's insulting to his family.

I thought Saban and Coach Prime were boys.

That's
alright. It means it's working.

I guess they're not gonna do an Aflac
commercial together next year. Right?

It's all a part of the plan.

Coach Saban is a good man. A lot of people
took the whole incident and ran with it,

blew it out and attacked him.

And I knew what he was trying to say,
what he was trying to accomplish.

And you can't judge a man by the thought
process of a moment.

He's established himself to be a monument.

So we're not gonna let a moment dictate
how I how feel about it man.

Coach Saban is a good dude.

- How you doing everybody?
- I'm doing good.

What's going on sweetheart? How art thou?

- My man, what's going on?
- How's everything?

They done drug us way out to
California.

Coach, I just want you to know
where I'm coming from man.

I love you. You my guy. You gonna always
be my guy. Just know that.

- Well, I appreciate you saying…
- No straight up.

You know when I said what I said before…

My point was, is this
what we want this to be?

You know, because it's what it's turned
into now. And I could see it coming.

I got on the phone with one kid.

He was like "Let's talk about the
business Coach."

I said, "Who do you think you talking to?"
As I said, "This is the conversation that

me and you are not having. Matter of fact,
we will never call you back again, sir.

"I appreciate you.
I wish you the best."

When did that happen?

A kid gets on the phone
and say let's talk about the business.

Yeah.

Instead of thinking about the right scheme
he's in, how you going to use him?

Well, kids should go to college to be
developing value for their future.

- Right.
- Not based on what they're gonna make.

Right.

You gotta
get dressed to be on set.

Oh, okay. Alright. Appreciate you man.

Coach Saban and I see eye to
eye on many things.

We both teachers, we both trying to
prepare these kids for the future.

- He stole my move!
- That's gonna cost us a penalty.

The way I see it, our job is to present
these kids opportunities.

HBCUs were the only option for
African Americans at one point in time.

And it was so many guys that
was drafted into the NFL.

It was unbelievable, it was crazy.
It was like this is where the talent lies.

The rest is history.

HBCUs were never the same
because now the brother had an option.

That's what we're trying to do.

We're trying to get you to the point
that you have an option.

Now you got an option like the XFL.

See this is another alternative
to the NFL that provides

another entrance into the game.

You get compensated by your talents.

Isn't this what you want
when you was a shorty?

I know you dreamt of the NFL,
but right now this is what you gonna get.

And that also is a segue into the NFL.

Boy you better be good. You got on gold
tights. You better be good boy.

You better be good. I'm telling you right
now. You better ball out.

Hey J, TJ tell him how we get down. You
come out here dripping, you better ball.

What's up baby?

- What's up baby?
- Cooling dawg.

- You alright?
- Yes sir.

All this is BP and AP. You know that mean?
It's Before Prime and After Prime.

Let's get that straight. And when I smile
I just put a ding on my teeth. Ding.

There you go.

That's what it is. Because now HBCUs are
shooting for those five stars.

Those four stars, those three stars

that they would have never
fathom that they could get.

They're doing that now.

You guys are different
man. You guys are special.

It's been a while. You said
you ain't get the attention.

Cameras are here. You ain't get the
notoriety.

The mics are here. You ain't get the
focus.

The Rock is here. What else
you want? This opportunity?

There's too many idols that
we know back at the crib.

Say, "Man, boy if I'd have stopped
smoking, I'd have been this."

Boy if I'd have stopped
drinking? I'd have been this.

"If I'd have had that opportunity,
I'd have been this." Don't be a I'd have.

Today's your opportunity.

You can't say nothing about it
because you got it right now.

It's on you. God bless you.

So there's 53 men on an NFL roster.
I was always number 54.

DJ, you're good. But you're not good
enough. And this is where the dream ends.

The fucking chip that that put on my
shoulder never goes away.

You all have different numbers on your
chest, but you're all number 54.

You're that player, you're the chip,
you've got the fire going on.

So we're gonna kick this
off only one way I know how.

- 51 from Grambling?
- Yes sir.

We're gonna do a pass rush
drill. Me and you one on one. Let's go.

- I've been waiting on this.
- Ready. Hut.

Oh, no, no, no.

- I was gonna do it to 'em.
- Come on. Hey, let's go.

No false steps when you get
down there, push, bam, pedal.

As we told Coach Prime for the
XFL. That's gonna be our first stop.

And we came down full freight.

Everybody got their asses
down here to Jackson State.

Coach Prime is opening the
eyes to recruiters, coaches,

professional leagues. There's talent here.

Don't overlook us.

- Y'all know who this is.
- Y'all know who this obviously.

T-bug tell 'em how, where
you went in the draft.

'Cause they don't know you. Who you are.
Where you went the draft?

- Fifth pick.
- Fifth pick overall, right?

- Overall.
- That's what I'm talking about.

They don't even know that.
They don't know that history.

Right behind, this guy.

Oh that's Florida State. That's when
Florida State was Florida State, right?

Florida State put him out baby.

He's not just walking the walk,
right.

He's doing everything. He is making it
matter. And he knows to look at both sides

and use his influence to make it happen.
So you know, that is legacy.

That is magic.

And then the work that he's
doing on the other side

to say for an athlete and
a professional athlete,

I'm also going to pull in
the league to pay attention.

I absolutely believe that Coach
Prime's influence is going

to change things going forward.

We went to that next level and I love it.

Coach Prime is one of the
greatest, if not the greatest of all time.

He made his money, he saved his money.

He could ride off in the sunset, but he
chose to dedicate his life to these kids.

I don't want these guys
or anybody watching this to

underestimate what's really transpiring
right now. This is history.

The whole league saw
that we're worthy enough

that they needed to come
here and see our players.

Front and center. Unbelievable.

Man, Coach Prime is a real
go-getter. Like he's a difference maker.

Him just making all this happen,

giving us the opportunity that we need to
be successful in life.

On and off the field like
that, that type of person.

You love to be around
that energy, you know,

and you just make a lot of things happen.

It's just a blessing to
be out here for real.

And throughout this whole
process, the kids got promoted.

The program is elevating, the whole school
is enhanced in all sports.

That's the vision. Everybody wins.

Y'all working?

Yes, sir.

All right. I don't see
nothing hung yet now.

We got rooms over here
housekeeping need to get to.

- It's gonna be a partition in this room.
- Okay.

So you gonna have half of
this room.

He's gonna have half of the room.
That's what it's gonna be.

- You seen how the big TVs are.
- I'm watching. I'm looking at that.

My truck ain't big enough.

Oh Lord.

I've been with Coach about 20
years.

Maybe a little bit more than
that. Yeah, it is been…

We've been together for quite a while.

Boy, I'll tell you what boy.
Year and a half.

God is unbelievable, isn't He?

When we got here we had a football
field

that man look like bad golfers was out
there just hitting divots in it.

I mean it was just gophers
were living out there chilling.

You know, you could break
somebody's ankle out there man.

And you know, we got a turf field.
Then he got new facilities now.

New uniforms. We got so many uniforms.

I think we rival Oregon, uniform for
uniform.

As many as we got. You
know what I'm saying?

I can tell you most…

What's up fellas?

My coaching staff is second to none.

These guys are good.

Let's take care of some business.

They know the game like it's the back of
their hands. But they know people.

I had received a phone
call from, from Coach Prime

and said, "Hey, let's go pack your bags.
You're coming."

And so I left the next morning,

I started my journey from, from
Reno to Jackson State.

I knew coming here, I knew
the academics were up to par.

I knew the fan base were up to par.

I felt like it was a great place to come
in and do what we do.

You know, just build on their tradition
and blaze new trails.

Let me just go over these
last things and I'm gonna run

through this then you guys can… okay.

Now this is very profound
and I want you to feel this.

Don't allow home to
interfere with your work

and don't allow work to
interfere with your home.

Wherever your feet are,
I need you to be there.

The connection that we have, we always
joke about it like we're Florida boys.

But it's just something
different when it comes to him

that I just never want,
I never want him to fail.

A title do not justify who you are.
It just locates you.

It let us know where your office is.

I've learned a lot, gained
a lot of good personality traits,

character, discipline
and you gotta get shit done.

It's the biggest thing I've taken from
this place is if not you, then who?

You know get shit the
done. It's gotta get done.

Then you gotta ask yourself,
are we better with you here?

I want game changers. I want guys that if
we miss, if you miss that day, we feel it.

Okay, last point of the day.
Everyone loves a winner.

Therefore the goal is to win on the field,

in the classroom, in the
community, and at home.

We've got to develop these young men
into the men that can handle adversity.

A relationship, finances, attention,
jealousy. We gotta develop men.

You know, he gives it to you raw and
direct and some people can't take that

but his intentions are always good and he
usually always works out in the best way.

Like sometimes man I can't
stand him cause I'm like dude,

you wrong, you wrong
you wrong about a kid.

And then next thing you know,
something happens and he looks over,

there's little fingers like
that and he does that thing,

and he is right, he's right.
The fucker is right.

Son of a bitch.

But I'm gonna be a head coach
one day because of that guy.

And that's just how it's gonna go.

With the new season comes
a new class of seniors

looking to take their
careers to the next level.

Coming to a HBCU it
was a tough transition,

you know you really get humbled, you know.

At Florida State you take stuff for
granted. Things aren't the same.

You know, financial aid ain't the same,
facilities isn't the same, you know.

And the main thing for
me I told Coach Prime,

I'm not gone lie to you, I was like,

"I'm not staying in no dorm.
I never stay in a dorm."

I draw the line. I started out
running.

I'm dipping and dodging.
The hater is coming.

Might get right back,
ain't no time to wait.

It's time to go face it.
I'm seeing they faces.

Slide through the city, I'm keeping it.

Where you at man?
You got like 10 seconds.

When I was six I knew I had a
gift.

And then in high school when
the offers started piling up,

I knew I was really was legit.

What's happening?

Hey, what's going on?

Nothing much. I was just letting
you know the package just came in.

My dad, Juran Bolden,
he played in the league

And seen him growing up in the league.
It was something like, it was fun.

You know, being around him, seeing
guys like Mike Vick,

Mike Alstott, Michael Pittman.
It was just a lot of guys I met.

I feel like God blessed me to have the
certain people in my life and everything

to line up correctly how it's supposed to.

- Dang, they broke my trophy.
- Which ones?

- All of them.
- No.

I should have told them to bubble wrap it.

I left Florida State. We got a
new coach.

Me and new coach didn't agree with
my playing time and my position changed.

And I decided to leave.

I'm gonna be honest when
Coach Prime called me,

you gotta smile because
that's, to me that's like, "Okay"

if the goat could see
some potential in me,

"screw what everybody else could say," you
know?

2-3, from the height, the
weight, the speed, everything. He has it.

I feel this is the year
he put it together.

That's wild. I didn't know
I had some of these trophies.

I didn't know these still existed.
Too bad they broke everything.

I really do feel like I
was destined for this.

Feel like God gave me the ability to play
it so why not use it to do what I do best.

I was destined to play football.

This JUCO right here.
Yeah, this is what got me here.

That was a game changer right there.

De'Jahn Warren.

Yeah, I forced about 15 turnovers
myself.

I was coming from everywhere. Reckless.

And like I take pride in hitting.

I was someone who was hungry, someone who
played with a chip on his shoulder.

Someone that worked very hard
and I say my mental state was very good.

Like I was happy doing what I love.

Sometimes I had to look back at the old me
just to remember like you still learn.

From my knowledge, I was the first person
he offered and the first person to sign.

I was committed to University Georgia.

Coach Prime, he reached out to me,
once he told me what he wanted to do

I wanted to help change that.
So on signing day I signed here.

Nobody knew about it. Like I
didn't talk about it to nobody.

Everybody thought Georgia.

But my heart was here.

Nugget is the most
fun-loving guy you would ever wanna meet.

He's a pro, he's a walking pro.

He has it.

This is my final season and right
now, I'm standing over cliff looking at

where the NFL draft is going to be.

My future's literally in my
hands, like this is my ticket.

His spirit is so healthy and
alive

and you want to see him do so well, but
Nugget is always thinking.

He out-thinks himself.

You run 4.340, you could
jump, athleticism, you got it.

You just get outta your
head and play ball.

Sometimes you'll lose yourself up
in this.

'Cause being an athlete, people don't know
that, that really do a lot to your mental.

Like there's been times I
almost wanted to give it all up.

But when I say I really cleared my mental
and got right with myself and with God.

I really mean it and I'm going to show it.

I feel like this gonna be a
great season for me this year.

I just gotta fix a few more things about
myself and I already know what they are.

And once I do that, we good.

The pressure's
on and expectations are high.

But I'm good with that,

'cause ain't nobody's
expectations higher than mine.

I need you to do your part guys.

I need you to do your part. I don't know
if you looked at this building,

but it looks pretty good
and we're not even a halfway finished.

When you see that big
break room right there,

it's gone be pool tables,
it's gone be foosballs tables,

it's gone be ping pong tables,
it's gone be video games.

I think it's 8 TVs in the new locker room.

8 TVs in that little atrium area.

You ain't gonna be funky
sitting up there playing pool.

You gonna be bathed, you gonna have a
shower, you gonna be fresh.

You're not gonna be funky
sitting in the new furniture.

Especially you lineman,
defense, offense linemen, you know.

Y'all already know, y'all big fellas.
Y'all know. Aright? We understand?

Yes sir.

Guys, I really do feel like
this team is far better than last season.

And we dominated. We won the SWAC.
We didn't dominate, we won the SWAC.

So that's why my expectation
is to be dominant.

My expectation is for several of y'all to
go to pro, not one or two guys.

My expectation is several of y'all to get
drafted. Not one or two guys.

My expectation is a multitude
of y'all to get NIL deals.

Not a few of y'all. That's my expectation.

Now what are your
expectation for yourself?

You gotta want it and you gotta
see it a lot more than I do.

I can't believe in you and you
don't believe in yourselves.

I think we have something wonderful.

This is the beginning. This is the genesis
of the season. All right?

Now let's work our butt off
and show 'em the revelation.

All right, let's go.

We've tasted winning, it was
good.

But the only way that our
players, coaches, support staff,

everyone involved with the
program is going to elevate,

is to dominate.

If you dominate in life, you
move on up.

I don't placate this.
This thing is real to me.

We talking about lives of young
men and young women who are

with the support staff that
can affect change so many more.

Real fast.

When you dominate, you elevate.
Expeditiously, and that's the goal.

Dominate on the field, off
the field, in the home,

in the classroom, in the community.

- We gotta dominate.
- My brother.

That's the mindset.
And it starts on the practice field.

It starts on a practice field.
When we practice with purpose,

when we practice with passion
and we practice to dominate

the game becomes that of practice.

Don't be lazy 23, not today.

Being on time is
something that you can control.

- Don't ever do that again.
- Get in stance Nugget!

When you line up, you telling
me where you going.

Too slow. Too slow.

You telling me where you going,
alright? Don't tell me nothing, alright?

Goals of pre-season is
to take that raw brick,

which is a player and carve
and smooth out all the edges.

Whether it's baby mama
drama, family drama.

When we cut those edges and smooth that
rock up, it should make a nice brick.

And we place that brick on top of another
brick until we build this wall.

It turns into another wall, and another
wall. And then you get this big edifice.

I've always wanna say edifice.
So I thought I throw that in there.

- That's it.
- And you live in it man.

You live inside this wall
because it's gonna be a lot of noise.

This is where men are made.

It's gonna be a lot of
rain, thunder, weather,

- all kind of stuff happening.
- Everything is 100.

And the only thing that
can shelter you is you,

- and the ones around you.
- There we go.

So that's what you
want to get out of summer

and I'm hoping that's what
we get out of this summer.

We making plays today
and we going have fun doing it.

We tackling today and we
gone have fun doing it.

We blocking today and we
gone have fun doing it.

That's a ball right there.

Let's have some fun today.
Don't be last big fella.

Everything about life is either
psychological or physical.

Being last is a choice.

And that's what you're gonna deal with
every day of your life. Figure it out.

The guy that you got to face in front of
you, the coaches on your butt,

it's either gonna be physical,
psychological, you got to win.

You gonna have fights, you get some hot
days, you gonna have some bad days.

But at the end of the day,

you know it gave you a chance
to really bond as a team.

Family on me, family on 3.

- 1, 2, 3 family.
- Family.

Let's go, hurry up!

When you lock up, the
camera on you at all times.

- Man I'm telling you.
- Yes sir.

Hey look, all I had to do was
get that mind back together.

And I'm back and I'm back.

- Keep whooping them boys, man.
- And I'm back.

It's gone be on you all the time.
You keep whooping them boys man.

So this is ace left squeeze
buffalo.

What's our call up front here somebody?

Blue two.

Yep. Okay. And we're gonna
throw off this guy, correct?

So really it's just that
that crossing route right now

- in that middle of the field window.
- You anticipate it? Yep.

Even though
my son's the quarterback,

I treat him like everyone
else on the team.

You gotta earn your
spot. Now he earned it.

But you best believe I'mma stay on him.

Get lights for me.
All right, Shedeur pop up.

Ball's right hash, let's
go bunch left spacing.

Okay, perfect. So that Z by default he's
just running Cali rules.

There's no doubt about it that he's earned
to be the leader on this team.

What's another option
we have on on H stick?

It's a high percent
chance that the down safety,

strong safety, he's gonna fall off.

Let's let's pull that up right now.

From a mental perspective, schematically,
he's super sharp, he's super in tune.

He knows football. He's
got a very high IQ.

We wanna make sure he
get wide wide though.

- Yes, exactly.
- Yeah. So like right…

Yes. Let him get out there.

- Here.
- Yes.

But last year he was
young and he gets thrown

into the fire as a young
freshman quarterback

and I mean shoot, he,
he had a heck of a year.

Shedeur Sanders
goes for the end zone has a man wide open.

His arm talent is unbelievable.

He can make all the throws
and do it accurately.

Sanders fires to a man wide
open.

He's also athletic too. And
he could get you out at really bad plays.

Runs up the middle this time.
He keeps, still on his feet.

Sanders is in the end zone.

He's about as talented as
anyone I've ever been around.

It's 8:10 right now. Okay,
we are doing ball security at 8:30.

All right, you guys need to get out there
ASAP, so you guys can get warmed up.

People just think everything's
sweet. You don't really work for anything.

Reality is, my dad, he has
a very, very, very high

expectation for like anything
come on the football field.

Where you going huh?

I know the impact he had on this world and
football. So it's almost normal to me.

Bro, I'm tired you that
black towel and stuff man.

- Black towel…
- That's not traditional bro.

It's a bunch of trials,
tribulations you go through.

My thing like I would say fear of failure.

That's really what I'm
been thinking about.

- We all waiting on the visors right now.
- We'll be fresh as him.

We all trying to get color visors.
We know my dad gonna get mad at it but,

hey, we ain't worry about that right now.

I think we gotta try it though.

What's up man? What's going on?

- Nothing. Chilling.
- All right. How y'all been?

- Good. How are you.
- Alright. Alright.

The expectation for Travis
is alarming.

The number one
overall recruit in the

2022 high school football class has
committed to Jackson State University.

Hunter is the highest ranked player
to ever commit to an HBCU.

Travis
might be a five star player

but he's also a kid living away from home
for the first time.

He's gone have to adjust, just
like any other 19 year old.

How y'all like it here in Jackson
man?

Man, it's good man.
I don't be doing nothing for real.

Just be fishing, that's all I do.

- Fishing? Where you fish at?
- Everywhere.

Everywhere.

Everywhere I see a pond, you might see me.

- Okay. Okay. What type of fishing?
- Bass.

- Bass…
- Only large mouth. Yeah.

- So you the truth huh?
- Yep.

You ain't got no photos of 'em,
do you?

- Come on now.
- Okay.

You ain't fishing if you
ain't take no pictures.

I hear you now.

We're gonna have to link up.
See I do tournaments too now.

Oh yeah, see that's what I…

- See, this is out here.
- Uh-huh.

- Mhm-hmm.
- Yeah, little nice one.

Okay. Okay.

It's not normal for a top ranked
recruit in the country to go to HBCU.

But once I seen Coach Prime here,

they need somebody to go
ahead and step up with him.

I want to get people's focus on HBCUs.

Continue to let people know that HBCUs is
where you want to come.

I'm gonna have to come check you
out, man.

You got to, it's all good.
You might be in here working Sunday but…

Nah, nah, nah. Nah, I'll be off.
I'll be off on on Sunday.

All you gotta do is look at the TV,
you gone see us up there.

- Thank you.
- Ain't no problem.

- Appreciate it.
- Thank you bro.

- Appreciate the haircut man.
- Appreciate you.

- Y'all be safe.
- You too.

Bro brought me back to life.

Travis is uncertain like
I don't know if I'm gonna

let him play because he had
surgery, off season surgery,

that we needed to take care of. Because he
was gonna try to play through it.

I'm like "Naw dawg. No, you gotta take
care of this man."

I only practiced like two times

so I can't do what I used to do 100% right
now, I gotta build back up to it.

God has a plan for me. He didn't put me
through this moment to let myself down.

The vision is not just one
Travis Hunter.

It's about eight of 'em out there at the
same time. Now you changed the game.

Ladies and gentleman,
make some Holy Ghost noise

for the birthday boy,
Mr. Prime Time himself,

Coach Prime, Deion Sanders!

Now my birthday usually
ain't a big deal to me.

Still ain't. I have a problem
with celebrating myself.

But to see the city of Jackson, Master P,
and the rest of the gang come out.

Man please. That was alright.

And y'all know what?

We got the world supporting
this school no matter where you

at because of this man right here.

So we gonna salute him and what he's doing
for these kids at this school.

It is, it's not going to unnoticed.

We gone make sure that this man change the
game, how he's doing right now.

We're just gonna celebrate tonight.
We gonna turn up Prime Time.

Y'all makes some noise for
Master P, ladies and gentlemen!

All my folks, all my family,
all my friends are my loved ones,

I want to thank y'all
and appreciate y'all,

but this was just a reason
to bring us together.

So if you could do something for me,

somebody that's not in your
crowd that you don't know,

just give 'em a hug and say,
"You know what, I love you."

Just give 'em a hug.
Don't be too, don't be too flat.

This is a celebration that I've never had
pretty much in my life.

This is the biggest kinda event that I've
ever had in my life. True, truly.

Jackson State all my coaches, all my
players. I love you. I appreciate you.

Everybody, Jackson, Mississippi
surrounding areas, peace.

Oooh wee.

- Happy Birthday.
- This is not my birthday. But anyway.

It's early birthday. Well, it's
your birthday Dad.

No matter how big this thing
gets, it's still all about family.

It's about us and having all my kids close
to me at this moment, baby.

Now that means everything.

- Hey son.
- I'm ready. I'm ready.

Growing up as a Sanders, people think,
yeah, it's a walk in the park.

My dad's from the hood.

Hold on, y'all pullin' this
pimping. Y'all hold.

- Yeah, hold on.
- Okay, put this away.

Okay, let's do something
different.

He raise us very different
from a lot of other rich kids I guess.

Okay daughters.

With him being who he is,

like we all had to just focus on being
ourselves

on like what we want to do
with our lives and stuff.

But he was always present.

- Who won this?
- Bro, these Prada?

- Who won this?
- Bro, these Prada?

Um hum. These ottas.

Reality is, my dad probably
has the highest expectation.

If you don't do something great
then you fall back on nothing.

Thank y'all. Daddy ain't got no money,
don't ask me for nothing tonight.

All my kids have different parts of me.

Big Willie. Big Willie.

But Shedeur I think is
equipped with more parts of me

because he spent the most time with me.

I've been around him the
longest.

'Cause I was always played
for my dad my whole life.

Like we're grown. We're a little bit
older now,

so as long you do nothing
like they're detrimental

to yourself or the family,
then he's a cool guy.

I understand life. At
this young spry age,

I do understand life and God
has waxed me with wisdom.

It's never just about JSU and it's never
just about me, it's about us, man.

We interrupt your usual
program for breaking news.

Mississippi Governor, to
address Jackson's water crisis.

As we speak, we are
drafting a state of emergency

declaration with regards to Jackson's
failure to produce running water.

We do not have reliable
running water at scale.

The city cannot produce
enough water to fight fires,

to reliably flush toilets, and
to meet other critical needs.

The problems
at the water treatment plant

came after days of heavy rains,
resulted in a swollen Pearl River.

Now this potentially leaves
close to

200,000 people without
save water to drink.

Tonight it is almost every
family for themselves

in the search for water.

Tonight one of the most
alarming parts of this story,

schools are now impacted and
officials say they don't know

how long the crisis will last.

Go the whole field.

We hit with little crisis.
The city of Jackson, we don't have water.

It means we don't have air condition.
We can't use toilets,

we don't have water,
therefore we don't have ice.

Which pretty much places
a burden on the program.

So right now we're
operating in a crisis mode.

I gotta get these kids off
campus and accommodate them

so that they can shower properly
and take care of their just… needs.

The devil is alive. You ain't
gonna get us today baby.

We can't get a glass of
fucking water here, man.

I mean we… that's that
should end the conversation.

You cannot drink water in this city.

The whole city of Jackson.
The whole city, really? The whole city.

My old lady had brushed her teeth and she
got sick from it the other day.

Like how does that happen?

Coach Prime does a great
job when there is adversity,

putting things in place to make you feel
comfortable as a coach and as a player.

If we gotta go somewhere and

at a 5 star hotel just to make the guys
feel good, you know he's big on that

and the university backs
him when it comes to that.

Coming up how I came up.

I knew how to survive on the lights cut
off, how to survive on the water cut off.

Without both, I still know
how to survive, so I'm fine.

But Coach Prime did make it so that I
didn't have to revert back to my old ways.

He put us in a hotel. So we was good.

I gotta show y'all something
though. See one thing about these beds,

they got these nice little…
Lemme show y'all man.

See these little covers right here.
See, people don't know, but I know.

Like these little… Man, smooth.

I don't what material this is,
gotta be cotton or something, but…

Helmet.

Coach Prime, he's finding ways to always
fix things.

Snapping on people every time
to make sure that we okay

and to make sure that we good.

Only way we can pay him
back is to win and compete

and keep dominating teams.
That's how we pay him back, so…

Why you late?

You hang with the wrong group man.
You gotta get some new friends.

You know better, dog.

- You a leader or a follower?
- I hope so.

- I'm asking you a question.
- Excuse me, then I'm a leader.

Who are you?
You're a leader but you come in here late.

You a leader, alright?
You a leader. He's the leader, DT.

Face the front. Face the
front.

Turn it off, turn it off,
turn it off, turn it off.

Hey guys, go put your phones outside.
We ain't finna do this.

Hurry up. Hurry up, let's go.

Put your phones on the table
man.

Put your phones on the
table. We not gonna do this.

We're not gonna start out like this.
Phone on the table.

Hurry up, let's go.

Go put your food, put your
food in..

Hey guys, go put your food in the trash
can, clean the tables. Come on.

This is a real meeting.
We don't do this at home.

We not gonna do this here.
This is a real meeting.

Starting off wrong.
Just 'cause we change locations.

Y'all act like we changing destinations.
It's not. We're the same.

But you… put you in a whole new
environment and you act totally different.

I'm seeing a whole bunch of
followers and no leaders.

Cause true leaders takes responsibility
for the team and helps them achieve goals.

The state, the fact of being accountable
or to blame for something.

You got believe this fellas.
It's all on your shirts,

but the way you going
about your life, you don't.

You just meandering through this thing,

thinking somebody gonna
give you something.

Ain't nobody gonna get you nothing.

You gonna have to take it.
You going to have to earn it.

You gonna have to want that thing.
You gonna to feel that thing.

You gonna have to embody that thing.

And we getting closer to the game

and you guys are meandering
around here like it's normalcy.

Air feels real good right here, ain't it?

It didn't feel good that
way at school did it?

But we stepped outside of who we are
to make it happen for you all.

What are you gonna step outside who you
are and make it happen for us?

On top of dealing with this water crisis,

I'm wrestling in my mind,
do I let Travis play or do I sit him out?

It's tough with him man.

You gonna get 12. Is 12 going to play?

Coach, I gotta protect him. He ain't
ready.

Travis is uncertain. Like I don't know if
I'm gonna let him play

because Travis has to be Travis.

And I can't let him out
there not being him.

Like, I couldn't go out on the
field unless I was me.

Because the, the criticism
is more than you want.

- Right.
- And you know he has the world watching.

I don't wanna put him in harm's way.
We're saying that he's not fully healthy

and he a little tentative. And that's the
thing you can't play tentatively.

You can't play scared
because there's a tremendous expectation.

He can't really plant and he can't do,
he can't be who he is.

He could be great but not a game changer.
And that's who he is.

He's a game changer on both sides.

- No doubt.
- On both sides.

Going back home, to the hometown,
college debut, crazy.

There you go. There you go.

Ready, set, hit. Ready, set, hit.

There you go, there you go.

You gotta put it behind you,
Get to the next play, bro.

Okay.

Nugget out thinks himself.

Instead of thinking of the best thing
that can possibly happen,

he think about the worst thing
that can possibly happen.

And normally that thing that we pondered
that we don't want to happen, it happens.

- This shit ain't acceptable bro.
- Hey, hey.

I got a lot of friends
that could have been

in this position but the
streets took that away from 'em.

You good bro. You just
gotta get out of your head.

- This is not acceptable, bro.
- Go harder.

Even though I was around it,
that was never a part of me.

And I always had a love for football.

Ready. Go.

You boys good? You good boys?

Just going through a lot
mentally…

Almost falling into
like a little deep hole

I lost a female friend. She got stabbed.
Two other friends of car accidents.

Another one to a shooting.

I fell right on my head, cuh.

I seen so many things
I can't even speak on.

It's just the way I came up.

I may be young but my eyes are very old.

So what's going on with you in
general? Ain't got it today, huh?

- I need a fucking therapist.
- Like mental?

My little cousin last
night, she just lost a friend.

15 years old. Got shot in a store.

So what's going on? You
want to talk about it or no?

When they talk about a
trap, it's literally a trap.

Like the mind and your body is trapped.

So that's what I'm trying to get my family
outta there 'cause they still in the hood.

Can I get some water please,
before you go?

It's like every day I wake
up I feel like I'm drowning.

Suffocating. But I don't
know what's wrong with me.

This player y'all saying out
there today, that's not me.

I don't know who that person is.

Family on me. Family on 3.
1, 2, 3.

Family.

Like I'm drowning at my
own dream. You feel me?

That's how I feel. I'm drowning at my own
dream, and I can't get out.

I think its probably just
a me versus me thing.

I'll figure it out,
hopefully before Sunday.

For some of these kids
this season means everything.

Every game gets to them a little bit
closer to their football future.

Or some cases farther away.

Flight time is one hour
and 52 minutes.

FAM U, coached by my dear
friend Coach Willie Simmons.

One of the best in the business.

Willie has a tremendous offense.
He's a tremendous play caller,

has a quarterback that can spin it.
Has a defense that can attack.

He's gonna come with it.
I expect him to come with it.

That's what I want him to come with it.

This game has ramifications.

The winner of this game is
probably gonna win it all.

It's a great test for our first game.

I wasn't in the best head space yesterday,
but I cleared my mind so I'm feeling good.

I'm good, I'm ready.
Just anxious, that's it.

Keep watching the same
plays over and over.

Get them out!

This game, this classic
was founded back in 1933

and that established the foundation

for historically black college
and university classics.

But this is a wonderful stage,

it's a wonderful platform and
I think we've both shown that

you can make it to the NFL from a HBCU.

Everything full speed.

Everything with intensity,
everything with passion.

Let's go get it. Ain't no resting today,
ain't no breaks today. Go get it.

Practice at game speed so
the game is like practice.

Oh that Florida boy here.
Boy that was a perfect idea.

Y'all got a real one today.

You got a real one today.

Make sure you have the discipline
and the accountability to each other.

That you can go out here and do this shit.
'Cause this four quarter right,

sideline and sideline, goal post to goal
post, for four motherfuckering quarters.

Our thoughts and our
prayers are with the residents

of Jackson, Mississippi.

With some of the
water issues in Jackson,

can you talk a little bit about
how that affected your preparation?

We took our players outta
the dormitories

when the schools were shut
down and got 'em into hotels.

We were able to take care of them properly

and professionally until we got on the
plane yesterday to do arrive here.

Yeah, the mall here, got the whole city
Miami here. You know I'm from Florida.

It's just, it's beautiful
to be back home, you know.

It's just who wouldn't wanna
be in Florida? You know.

- Doing great. Yes sir. Nah.
- Ain't we coming back, now.

- My hero.
- My hero.

- How you doing, please?
- I'm good.

We're looking good.

I don't have any true concern
at any of the positions.

Some of the kids we hadn't
seen them in a game situation

and they gotta understand
how we roll in excitement

and adrenaline and every
play is vital with us.

This is, yeah, we take this serious man.

Linebacker group, they better than y'all?

Hell naw.

- Secondary?
- No.

Ain't nobody, ain't nobody
in the SWAC got what we got.

We just gotta do our
jobs to put it together.

When you do what you're capable
of doing at every table,

when you do what you're capable
of doing, it's dominating.

I wasn't fully prepared
for the FAM-U game.

I only practiced like two times.
So it was my first week coming back.

Two days before the game,
couldn't even put pressure on my foot.

They was almost about to take
me to the the emergency room

cause I was in so much pain.

A lot of emotions floating around that
games 'cause I wanna play so bad.

I wasn't feeling anything.
My adrenaline was rushing.

You mean more to us than
this game.

Now if you ain't you,
I don't want put you in that situation.

When you walk out there
any field, any practice,

anything you to do, they
expect you to be that dude.

Now if you ain't that dude,
this is not a good decision.

You get called into the office,
you know something very serious.

It's like, he really cared about me.
He really wanted to know how I felt.

Not what anybody else was telling him,
not what the trainer was telling him.

Not what the coaches was telling him.
He called me in there to talk to me.

Are you gonna go out there
and be you?

- What percentage you at?
- I feel like I'm at 90.

- You at who?
- 90.

I gotta take care of
your career my brother,

and I gotta treat you
like you a son to me.

And that's how we've always
treated all of y'all.

Go head out, let me talk to them.

I know how he feel though. First one ever.

It would be hard for me to be sitting over
there and don't play.

And he got that in him.
He got you in him, he got me in him.

He got that thing in him.

It really meant a lot to me 'cause I'm
from Florida. I'm from West Palm Beach

and most of the crowd
was probably my family.

They didn't even know if I was playing or
not. I didn't tell 'em anything.

They asked me if I'm
playing, yeah, I'm playing.

I didn't even know if I was playing.

Guys, I was searching hard
and long to

find something to say to you
that was truly appropriate.

I went to my favored weapon,
which is the Bible.

I didn't even get past
the Book of Genesis.

It's the beginning when
God walked into darkness

and saw nothing and said,
"Let there be light."

This is your genesis.
What if you could say "Let there be."

It should be what we say.
What if we said, "Let there be sacks."

Let there be catches.
Let there be touchdowns.

Let there be… Let there be tackles.

"Let there be everything
you endeavor to be."

Fellas, this is a wonderful opportunity.

But all we gotta do is
say, "Let there be."

And we finna go out there and do something
that we know we are capable of doing.

Come on, Coach! Come on!

If you feel something my
brother,

you've got not try to be Superman. You've
got to get up outta of there, alright?

I'm letting you ride. You gotta come on.

Don't make it worse and don't think about
it. Just be who God called you to be.

He's not worried about what you
can do for him in the moment.

He want me to get to the next point in my
life. He want me to get to the league.

He want me to be a a great, not just a
great football player, a great human,

a great husband, a great man.

Thanks, Coach. Thank you for
giving me this chance, Coach.

I love you boy. I love
you. You know I love you.

Thank you Coach for giving me
this chance.

You mean so much to me, Coach.

You mean so much to me too.

I love you, and I gotta take care of you,
all right?

Yes sir. Thank you Coach.

Travis has to be Travis.
I just wanna see him relax

and do the doggone thing and be dominant.

- How you feel baby?
- Good, good.

Just get us in the right
thang and let God be God.

You don't have to be that. Let God be God.
It's gonna be a big one for you.

Shedeur don't flinch.
He's always been that way.

That's why we call him grown. He's always
acted like an adult, a grown man.

He has a calmness, a, a
steadiness, a certainty.

Just a smoothness about it. He got it.

Hey, it's the Genesis, this beginning.
This it, 4,000, it starts today.

- All right, love you baby.
- Love you.

I'm looking at him as a
coach, number one.

I really don't look at it as a dad
until probably after the game.

Here we go. Here we go,
let's go, let's go!

We underway
from Hard Rock Stadium.

It's here. It's arrived. It's time.
And that ball gets kicked off

and whoever catches your ass is in
trouble.

Sanders looking to the end
zone. Finds the target and touchdown.

Shane Hooks.

'Cause we've been dealing
with some shit down here

and we've been looking for a punching bag.

Straight up.

Don't save none, Brett.

Empty your playbook, do not
save anything. Empty it out.

Showing off the
arm strength, the mobility.

Look at the patience. Got a guy.

Has time,
and there's Rico Powers.

Hey get off, hey you coming off.

I told you, if you don't beat him up at
the line, you out.

- Where Michael Pleas at?
- That wasn't even my dude.

Yeah, well I don't give a fuck.
You didn't hold nobody.

Aye, that quarterback not
accurate at all.

The thing about Nugget
is, is all between his head.

He really have a lot of
distractions outside of football.

So I feel like God brought him here
to be under Coach Prime.

Be under Coach Mathis, so they can steer
him into the right direction.

They don't even throw
it no more to my side,

but I'm still hoping for them throw over
there, trying to get me a pick.

When you have a DB that take
away a whole side of the field like that.

That's a lot like his coach used to do.

Dangerous throw,
and no white jerseys around.

Let's go.

Dawg, you know when they
coming in motion, it's a switch.

Y'all gotta talk about that. Come on.

And now it's time to drop your
nuts, you know?

Who really is gonna be Tarzan
in and who gonna play Jane?

Which one of y'all supposed to go in?

Who told you to go in?
Who told you to go in?

No, you ain't watching
game. I know it's you.

You ain't paying attention to the game.

You ain't watching the game.

He's an intense man, man.

He wants to win. He's a
very competitive person.

He expects excellence.

And if you don't reach that standard.
You're gonna hear about it.

Florida A & M, anxious for
some points

and this one goes through
the uprights and it's good.

Man, zero, zero.

Great things going.

Everybody's drinking.
Everybody's drinking.

Let's go get 24 more.

Hey. Hey everybody.

All right. Everybody on
special teams listen up.

Hey, what they do, hey, we got the ball in
the second half. Where fucking Quay at?

- Hey
- Hey.

- You all right?
- I'm all right.

- You sure?
- Yeah I'm sure.

- You need me to come?
- No. No.

No, but you tell
your boys to hold that ball.

And you tell them to block for Shedeur.

They are blocking for Shedeur.
I'm worried about y'all right now.

We was going to talk
to you after the game.

You stay focused on that game.

We gone win it. We
gone bring it back home.

All right well, I know I'll
be seeing y'all soon now.

Y'all just let me know what arrangements
you wanna make and all that. Uh?

- Sure will, Mindy too.
- I know. So let me know what arrangements

you need to make, where everything need to
be. So we can take care of it.

Oh, okay.

- All right. I love y'all.
- Love you too.

- All right.
- Bye-bye.

Coach, you okay?

Yeah. Naw we're good. We're good.

Let's go to work.

Hey coach.

We may have to flip it
and go back at that again

'cause we had that across the middle.
That, that dagger.

Yes. Both of them are good.

Now, we just gotta keep
the level of intensity.

- Trust yourself.
- We're good. We got it.

All right. I'm outside… So, okay he can
film me, alright, alright.

Hey! Fellas, we gotta
dominate.

It's the only way we're
gonna get to the next level.

Anything in life, you gotta dominate the
space you in. Then you get elevated.

I love what I'm seeing,
but we got a little lackadaisical.

We gonna get the ball, we gonna go down
and score and they gonna lay down

and after they lay down,
defense gonna get back on the field

and do what they been doing.
'Cause that's what y'all do.

Yes sir.

- Do you believe?
- Yes sir.

- Do you believe?
- Yes sir.

- Do you believe?
- Yes sir!

Well let's go do this then.

This next five to seven
minutes is gonna determine…

Yeah. Yeah. You gotta go.

Intensity. Intensity, intensity.

I don't like being in close
games. I like blowing teams out.

Jackson State.

They come out of the locker
room score on the opening drive.

We having a fish fry today.
Let's mix it up. Pick. Pick. Pick.

It's picked off! To the house!

Good shit. Good shit.
Good stuff. Good stuff.

Here we go. Now we're cooking with grease.

Listen lineman,

a lot of y'all this is going to be your
last series. So finish strong.

- Yes sir.
- We got that.

- Yes sir.
- Finish strong, alright?

Oh, there it is. Hit it.

Uh oh. Uh oh. Get the block. Uh oh.

Probably by third quarter,
you know,

"Okay. We… we're in full of control."
You still dialed in,

but you get a chance to really enjoy the
environment. You know the fans, the band.

You'll see the expressions
of the kids face,

when they have success, you know, it's
wonderful. It's wonderful.

Four touchdowns
for Shedeur Sanders.

Just three in completions the entire game.

Sanders, finds his man and a touchdown.

We put a whole nation
on notice. Simple as that.

Coach talking about dominating.
We dominated behind,

and the fans left in the third quarter.
The band left, everybody left.

That was supposed to be a heavyweight
fight and ended up being a knockout.

Fumble. On the ground. Scooped
up by Aubrey Miller in for the score.

It is what it is. I made the best
of every opportunity I was given

once my number got
called. I'm a team player.

I won't hating. I'm happy my brothers.

'Cause look, once one go down,
the other one can hold it up.

You gotta understand. We just
don't say, say we gonna dominate.

Just to say it like that's not
just something just written

on the wall like we mean it. We live by
every day. This was a big opportunity.

And look, we just scored
again, like this ain't nothing.

One thing people don't
realize too, the kicking game different.

Yup.

Look at that dawg. Look at
the hang time. Look at the hang time.

They stopped returning the ball
at the end of second quarter.

Yep.

I wanna play so bad. I
wasn't feeling anything.

My adrenaline was rushing
so it was like,

"Coach, I'm 90% I wanna play."
I had to let him know.

Where were you
really at? Like for real?

Uh, probably 20%. Like, like I said, that
night, the night before,

I couldn't even put pressure on it.

This is something rough to go through,

but at this point it's just
like I want to get healthy,

100% healthy, and once I get 100% healthy,
then I better shine how I need a shine.

59 to 3.
And Coach Prime and Shedeur Sanders

hand Jackson State their
first win of the season.

Nobody saw this coming at all.

I was trying to figure out,
is Jackson State that good?

It's not even so much a dominating FAM-U

as it is of dominating
the weakness inside of you

to make sure every play
you give it your all.

Complete domination. Do…
exceed your own goals.

Do as much as you can within that four
quarters, that you leave no doubt

with anybody who should
have won that game.

But fellas, I'm proud of y'all, man.
You have no idea how proud I am of y'all.

I knew it was gonna go down like that.
I felt it was gonna go down like that

and it went down like that.
So where he at?

Where my son? Uh uh.
Come on, come on, come on, come on.

Hold on, hold on, hold, hold.

We kicked they butts.

It wasn't even close.

We did that.

Now give me my theme music.

The thing that I love the
most is the fashion that we won.

Yet and still the team wasn't satisfied

because they felt like
we left meat on the bone.

Yeah, we, we left some
collard greens on the plate.

I love it.

White House Press Secretary,

Karine Jean-Pierre says,
President Biden has been

briefed on Jackson's water crisis.

There is still a tremendous
amount of work to be done today.

Think the water's gonna
be turned on by Monday?

No.

Probably not.

Do they have a plan for like the team
and stuff like that?

Probably, no.
We are the plan.

We are the plan.

The Bible says in this world
we're gonna have tribulations.

We've always had tribulations
since the day I set forth here.

We came during the pandemic,
We had a storm that we were

bathing in the pool at one of the local
hotels. Now, the water situation.

Thing that I've understood
about the people of Jackson is

they're resilient and all
they needs is a little hope.

Water is not safe to drink.

And I'd even say it's not
safe to brush your teeth with.

State officials,
say residents will be without

safe drinking water and have
virtually no water pressure

for an unknown period of time because the
plant is operating far below capacity.

We better get this darn
water right

before our first game here. ASAP.

The city needs us and
we need the city also.
