Yes. And, uh, I brought my entire family.

[chuckles]

Okay, I have been here.

Seen it with my own eyes.

Blocks and blocks of closed-up,
burnt-down buildings in the Bronx.

So, I am sure if you look at any of this,
they're all arson.

Samantha had a photo in one of her zines
of one of the fires.

That means she was there.

Why was Samantha burning buildings
in the Bronx?

That's because of Nicholas McKay.

Also known as Nicky Chaos.

And why was he burning buildings
in the Bronx?

Because he needs money
to support his operation.

So he has a band, which he stole,

his shitty squat, uh, pseudo-intellectual
social movement, right?

Plus, there's the fact that
he's a pyromaniac.

[inhales] Yeah, I mean, he loves it.

If money's the motive, who's paying him?

Dad, um, I'm gonna say something...

The person paying this young man
to burn these buildings

is my brother-in-law, Amory Gould.

- Dad?
- How did you know that?

I'm not quite sure what I know. Not yet.

But I've been suspicious for a while.
Please, continue.

[cell phone ringing]

- [parent] Hello?
- Mrs. Weisbarger?

- Yes?
- Detective McFadden, NYPD.

We got your son Charlie here
at the station.

- You do? Is he...
- Alive? Yes.

- Oh.
- [McFadden] In trouble, also yes.

But he's safe. And you can see him.

I am on my way.

I got a lot on my plate,
so give me the short version.

I went to see Samantha.

That kid was there.
I recognized him from the poster.

We got into it when he tried to leave.

But… [stammers] …wait,
he said something about a-a bomb.

He said he called it in,
asked if you guys found it.

Yeah. He did, and we didn't.

This I can't explain. He said
it was named after my wife's step-uncle.

- Amory Gould?
- Yeah.

[William] The other day I followed Nicky,

and I saw him meet Amory
at the Harlem River right on the bridge.

I needed proof
that they were working together, right?

I found it. [sighs]

"LH"?

The only reason
Amory ever investigated Nicky

was because he was my friend. Right?

But Nicky's file, it wasn't...
It wasn't with the personal stuff.

Nicky's file was with the business files.

Right, because it is business.

LH is Liberty Heights,
is a proposed development right here.

But the only way
to get investors interested

in an under-resourced area like that
is to operate on a massive scale.

Like, basically, build a small town.

But when we ran the numbers
on acquiring this land,

it was astronomical.
So the project got shelved.

Until Amory just decided
to discount all the prices himself.

Hire Nicky to burn down
an entire fucking neighborhood.

What does that mean
from a business perspective?

Once enough properties
had been boarded up and abandoned,

then Amory could apply to the city
for a blight decree.

It means the city can expropriate the land
and then sell it back at a very low price.

And if he's got more fires planned,
that means more people could get hurt.

Or worse.

Look, we need to be able to prove
he made this blight decree.

Is, um... Is this proof enough?

What is that?

This morning
I had breakfast with the deputy mayor.

He didn't see any problem
with sharing a document

written on my own company's letterhead.

It's an application for a blight decree.

- Signed by Amory Gould.
- [grunts] That's it.

- That was impressive, Dad. [chuckling]
- And they said that you'd lost it.

These days more often than I'd like,
they're right. But I do have my moments.

I didn't wander off. I escaped.
People believe what they wanna believe.

Sometimes
a man's weakness is his strength.

Both true, and both came in handy today.

[knocks on door]

I was in the building, and I heard...

William. Hi.

It's been a minute, huh?

[Bill] Keith, William's back.

And apparently, we're solving
the attempted murder of a young girl.

[Regan] I assume that's why you're here.

U-Unless… [stammers] …you're embroiled
in other crimes that I don't know about.

Wait a... Wait a minute.
How does Keith know this girl?

They were having an affair.

Jesus, Reggie.

Hey, Bill. [stammers] Yes, it's true.

We're splitting up.
I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, Daddy.

But I guess that's him, right?

That's you. Back of your head.
[chuckles] Preppy.

Huh.

Holy shit.

It's you.

You're Amory's bagman.

Wow, Keith. So, I, uh... I take it
that's... That's where you met Sam.

- Right.
- Mmm.

Bagman? [stammers]

- What are you talking about?
- [sighs] Where do I start?

The beginning is usually a good place.

Yeah. Amory had me, uh, drop off
an envelope downtown every month.

To that address.

[William] At Nicky's place?

I don't know whose place it was
or what was in the envelope.

Wasn't told, didn't ask.
But I... I assume it was money.

Why would you do that?

Because I owed Amory,
and I didn't want you to know.

Know what?

That I didn't drop out of med school,
I flunked out.

That Amory got me my first finance job.
And when I lost all of our money,

all my clients' money,
Amory bailed me out.

All he wanted in return
was one errand once a month.

You saved my life. I'm not... [chuckles]
I'm not gonna forget it.

You needed a friend. You found one in me.
And you know, I was happy to do it.

- Thank you.
- One more thing.

I didn't go to business school
to be a drug dealer.

And who said anything about drugs?

Take the gun. Deliver the package.
That's all I'm asking.

Surely, that's not too much?

Why... Why wouldn't you tell me that?

You could... You could've told me that.
Any... [stammers] All of it.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

What happened on the fourth?

Sam called me. Wanted to talk.

Said if I didn't come to her,
she'd come to me, to the party.

I saw her there by the park.

She was at the bus stop.
I don't think she saw me.

I freaked out and took off.

I thought she'd sent Regan a note
outing the affair.

I thought she wanted to talk about us.
But now I know something was wrong.

She was scared. And maybe in her world,
I constituted a responsible adult,

someone she could trust.

Black powder was stolen
from Joe Yeung's workshop.

It's dangerous stuff,
and there's a lot missing.

We think
Nicholas McKay has been building a bomb.

Yeah. The kid said the same thing.

- What kid?
- The... The kid. Um, you know, Weisbarger.

He was brought in with me.

You. What do you know about a bomb?

- I've... I've seen it.
- He drew it.

And I think I know
where they're putting it.

Get an arrest warrant for Amory Gould,
attempted murder.

William Hamilton-Sweeney's here.
He'll give you what you need.

- He's alive?
- Mm-hmm.

[chuckles] I'm gonna fucking hug that guy.

You're gonna come with me.
Tell me everything you know on the way,

starting with where we're going.

- Oh, okay. All right.
- [Parsa] Come on.

Sir, we just received a bomb threat.
NYPD's sending a team. It seems credible.

I'm sure it is.

Give me five minutes
before you sound the alarm.

- Sir?
- I don't do well with crowds.

- [police officers clamoring]
- [siren wailing]

[siren wailing]

[guard 1] Everyone make your way calmly
to the stairwell,

to the front of the building.

We are evacuating
the building as a precaution.

Stay calm.

Keep moving, people, across the plaza.
Thank you.

For your own safety,
move across the street.

[officer, through walkie-talkie]
Gould has left the building.

They're sweeping the building
floor by floor,

starting at the penthouse
where his office is.

Stay in the car.

What? No, no, no, no.
Let me... Let me help, okay?

Sam might die 'cause
she tried to do something like this.

I'm willing to do the same for her.

That's messed up.

Also, you're a kid,
and I'm not sure I trust you.

Stay in the car, or I'll arrest you.

- [grunts]
- I'm already arrested, right?

I'm not sure what you are yet.

Keep moving across the street.

- Oh! No one's allowed inside.
- Hey! Let go of me.

- Wait, what were you doing in there?
- Buying a fucking condo.

Yeah, right.

Fuck you. I was dropping off
a sandwich for my dad. There he is.

Dad, hey!

- Security! Security! We...
- Oh!

[Parsa chatters]

[guard chattering]

Go back in...

Fuck.

Hey, wait!

Oh, shit.

[sighs, grunts]

Bill's missing, and now
there's a bomb threat? What's going on?

- I don't know.
- How is that possible? You always know.

Bill? Darling.

Regan, you found him. How wonderful.

- Actually, he found us.
- William.

- William, what brings you back?
- Him.

Hi. I'm alive.

I guess
you underestimated my will to live.

Also,
you forgot I'm an incredible swimmer.

I have no idea
what the hell you're talking about.

See, we found your files.

We know everything.

Nicky, the arsons, the blight decree,
Liberty Heights.

You're going to prison.

How dare you burst in here and start
hurling these outlandish accusations.

He didn't burst in. He came in with me,
invited into my home.

His home.

William has made a very compelling case
regarding your crimes, Amory.

If only I'd listened to him more closely
years ago,

we might not have
lost so much time as a family.

And that poor young girl might not be
fighting for her life right now.

- What girl?
- The girl that was shot in the park.

William has some wild theory
about my involvement.

- It's over.
- [Felicia] Bill, what are you saying?

Isn't it clear? William's always
wanted Bill to cast me out.

It's taken 15 years,
but he's finally succeeded,

at least from the family.

We'll see what happens with the business.

Amory, I'm sure if we dug deep enough,

we'd find that you were responsible
for those crimes too.

Look at this formidable team.

The dried-up divorcée,
the addled patriarch and the junkie son.

Not to mention,
the Great American Novelist.

You know, your barbs no longer injure me,
Mr. Gould.

A villain's words tend to lose their power
once his plot's been revealed.

That's Mercer's way of saying,
"Fuck you, Amory."

You know what, fuck him.
And fuck all of you!

I've been eating your shit for decades,
and now…

- you're gonna have to deal without me.
- [siren wailing in distance]

- No, no, no.
- [Bill, Mercer, Regan] William!

[Charlie panting, grunting]

[groaning, panting]

SG!

SG!

Lorraine, where are you? [pants]

Lorraine!

- William. William. Don't hurt him.
- [Mercer] Come on, William. Stop, please.

I could give a shit about Amory,
but, like...

But we also
don't want you to get in trouble.

- Please, William. It's gonna be okay.
- Right.

We can't let him leave.
He'll slip off on to some private jet,

disappear to whatever the fuck island
his creepy friend owns.

- [Felicia] This is unbelievable.
- [Mercer] No, okay!

See, everybody else has paid
for what you've done.

Everyone except for you.

Do you need help, sir?

No, Mathes. Just leave us.

Mr. Gould.

- Get away from him.
- What are you doing?

- [grunting]
- Oh, my...

- It's okay, it's okay.
- [heaving]

[Mercer] Regan, call an ambulance.
Please call the ambulance right now!

[Mercer] It's okay. Just hold on.

- [mouthing words] Come on.
- [William panting]

[Mercer] Look at me. Relax.

Hi… [stammers] …we need an ambulance.
Someone's been stabbed.

It's okay, it's okay.

[panting]

[Sewer] Charlie.

- Hey. Hey.
- You're too late, Charlie.

No. No, no. That's not true. [stammers]
Until it goes off, we still have time.

Okay? There's gotta be something.
Um, you're here. Y-You gotta help me.

- I'm here to die.
- What? W-Why?

I tried to stop it, but I can't.

[inhales shakily]
I don't know who I am anymore.

Maybe I was never that great
to begin with.

I must've had some good in me.

I've done so many things, Charlie.

Bad things. [inhales shakily]
And for what?

- To help people? Who have we helped?
- Hey. Hey, it's okay. All right?

We all fell for it.
Nicky's just good at what he does.

Now you know the truth. Like me
and Sam, which means you're already free.

Sam is not free, Charlie.

- Who knows if Sam is even gonna live?
- You can do what Sam couldn't.

You can stop this.
Well, you and me together.

I know the bomb is in here,
and I think you know where.

If you tell me,
we can finish what Sam started.

She didn't want any more people
getting hurt, and I know you don't either.

Lorraine, I can't save them, but you can.

[breathes shakily]

- I told you there's no time.
- Where is it?

- Charlie, stop. What are you doing?
- Where is it? Lorraine, where is it?

It's down there.

Nicky and the guys
got jobs as window washers.

[beeping]

Charlie, stop.

Stop. What are you doing? Charlie!

Charlie, stop! Stop! What are you doing?

Charlie, no! It's too far!

[panting, groaning]

[Sewer] Charlie, stop! Please!
You're gonna fall. Don't make me see that.

[breathes shakily]

Charlie, please! There's no time!
Just listen to me!

[Charlie's dad echoing] Hey, Charlie.
Something's happened.

[airplane approaching]

Charlie!

No! No!

- [rhythmic beeping stops]
- [alarm beeping]

Someone tell me what the fuck is going on.

[car horn honks]

[nurse]
Well, how much longer is it gonna take?

Why aren't the generators kicking in?

Maintenance is working
as fast as they can.

[stammers] What? Stop!

[respirator hissing]

Hang in there, baby girl.
I am not letting you go out like this.

[Sam panting]

[echoing] Please! Please, let me out!
