Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990–1996): Season 4, Episode 4 - Missing Linka - full transcript

Captain Planet:
Our world is in peril.

Gaia, the spirit of Earth,

can no longer stand
the terrible destruction

plaguing our planet.

She sends five magic rings
to five special young people --

Kwame from Africa,
with the power of Earth.

[ Sirens wailing ]

From North America -- Wheeler,
with the power of fire.

**

From Eastern Europe --
Linka, with the power of wind.

From Asia -- Gi,
with the power of water.

**

And from South America --
Ma-Ti, with the power of heart.

When the five powers combine,

they summon
Earth's greatest champion --

Captain Planet!

The power is yours!

[ Birds chirping ]

**

Man: Hey, Harry, shouldn't we
slow it down in this fog?

We're already two hours
behind schedule.

We gotta keep
the hammer down.

What the?

[ Tires squeal ]

[ Horn blares ]

[ Tires squeal ]

**

[ Indistinct talking ]

**

Wheeler: [ Snoring ]

**

Gi: Gaia!

Planeteers,
we have an eco-emergency.

Hey!
What's the big idea?

Better set course
for Phoenixville.

There's been a toxic spill.

Not again!

Again.

Dioxin and benzene.

If it gets into
the water table,

it could be
another Love Canal.

So be careful, Planeteers.

Get ready to break out
the protective gear.

ETA -- 35 minutes!

[ Yawns ] Well, I'm gonna
go back to dreamland.

Wake me when we get
to the nightmare.

[ Suchi chitters ]

[ Horns honking ]

[ Siren wailing ]

**

Woman:
And that's the situation.

The question is, who's
responsible for cleaning it up?

As mayor of Phoenixville,

I feel that the state
should bear the cleanup costs.

Well, the waste is
from out of state.

And that makes it
a federal problem!

Groster Chemical is not
responsible for this accident.

The blame lies with
the trucking company!

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!
No one at the chemical plant

told us this stuff
was so dangerous!

The city isn't prepared
for this kind of disaster.

We've asked the state
for experienced cleanup crews.

But that could take days.

It won't take days!

In fact, we'll be opening
the highway immediately!

Where are the cleanup crews?

Wait! Do not
move that tanker!

You kids shouldn't be here.

You do not understand!
It is too dangerous!

Oh, no!

Aah!

[ Groans ]

It is time for teamwork!

Let our powers combine.

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!

Heart!

By your powers combined,
I am Captain Planet!

Huh, looks like
a toxic hang-up.

Ugh! Leaving?

But we just met.

[ Groans ]

Captain Planet!
Are you okay?

He's in trouble!

[ Groans ]

He is coming to.

Waste makes haste,
Planeteers.

Time for a quick exit.

The power is yours.

What in the foggy
blue morning was that?

Special effects!

Come on.
We have work to do.

Linka: We need to
seal those tanks!

Water!

Fire!

Wind!

Phew!

We'd better get out
of these suits

before the stuff
eats through them.

Wheeler: Fan mail
from some flounder

or a letter
from a secret admirer?

It is from Mishka.

Who's Mishka,
some old boyfriend?

This is no joking matter.

What's wrong, Linka?
Bad news?

It is from home.

My grandmother is very ill.

In fact,
half the town is sick.

Mishka is urging me
to come home.

I feel I must go to
my [speaks Russian] at once.

You can't leave!
You're kidding, right?

Nyet, Wheeler,
I am not.

But Linka, what if we have to
call Captain Planet?

Yeah!
I have no choice!

Things are under control here.
And my grandmother needs me.

Grandmother? More like
this Mishka guy!

Grow up, Wheeler!

Linka!

There is nothing
you can say.

If I had been here,
this would not have happened.

**

Ma-Ti: What is that?

The old iron mine.

Mishka says it is
almost tapped out.

Most of our town
is now unemployed.

That must be the new
recycling plant he wrote about.

There, land down there!

[ Engine shuts off ]

Mishka!

[ Smooches ]

[ Russian accent ] My little
Linka, as beautiful as ever!

Easy, Wheeler.

How is Grandma?
Not well.

The doctors do not know
what is causing the sickness.

The animals are sick,
too.

I must see her.

I have to go.
Forgive me.

No, Linka.

Take it back!

Nyet. I will not
be using it again.

Gaia will know
what to do with it.

Linka, wait!

She is home now,
where she belongs.

I don't believe this!

Come on, Wheeler.

Grandma, I promise to find out
what is making you sick.

[ Geo-Cruiser flies overhead ]

[ Indistinct shouting ]

[ Russian accent ] No one
was sick until you opened
that recycling plant!

[ Indistinct shouting ]

[ Russian accent ]
That is nonsense!

My plant causes a fraction
of the pollution

the mine produced!

Then why have problems
started now?

I don't know!

We do not have the equipment
to analyze.

Then let me analyze it
for you.

It is time we close
the recycling center

and start a new mine!

This is unbelievable!

Why would anyone
want to shut down
a recycling plant?

She is right!

The plant can be as beneficial
as the mine was

but without most
of the pollution

and other harmful
side effects.

The mine
built this town!

There is nothing harmful
about pig iron!

Everyone knows there are
dangers from mining.

Enough!
Don't listen to her!

Little Linka
deserted us long ago.

You have no right to come
back here and interfere!

That's right!
You tell her!

I am warning you --

Keep your nose
out of my business!

Perhaps it is better
if you go home, Linka.

No, Mishka.

I am going to
have a look around.

**

[ Rat squeaks ]

This is worse
than I thought.

[ Gasps ]

Wind!

Bozhe moi!

[ Gasps ] Aah!

Let go of me!

Who are you?

Aah!

Who?

Linka,
are you all right?

[ Sighs ] I am fine.

What happened?

Just a little
traffic accident.

After all the dangers
the Planeteers have faced,

it would be silly to be crushed
by a donkey cart.

[ Laughs ]

If these toxins keep spreading
and seep into the groundwater,

Phoenixville will be
a ghost town.

We must find a way
to stop them.

Have you found out
anything

about the
missing-Linka situation?

I checked the information
Ma-Ti sent.

The recycling plant
shouldn't be making people sick.

But the old iron mine
worries me.

People used to dump
the tailings,

the waste from
the mining process,

back into the shaft.
And?

I just wish we could
investigate firsthand.

Here you go, Grandma.

[ Russian accent ]
Thank you, sweetheart.

I am certain that
the answer to the illness

is in the old iron mine.

But how to prove it?

[ Coughs ]

Please, take care,
Linka.

You have been gone
a long time.

Things are not
as they were.

Do not worry, Grandma.
I will be careful.

I'd love to help, son.

But we don't have
the equipment.

Amazing!

We're glad you're back.

Wheeler took it
really hard, yes?

I have never
seen him like that.

Too much excitement?

[ Laughs ] Jet lag.

I've analyzed the data
on Linka's town.

It all points to some kind
of poisoning -- heavy metals --

probably from contaminated
drinking water.

Unless the spill here
is contained soon,

this town will end up
like Linka's.

[ Sighs ] Well,
we cannot call Captain Planet.

I've got an idea.
Come on!

Covering the spill
with some absorbent material

should slow the seepage.

Yes. And it will buy time
until the cleanup crews arrive.

It's worth a try.

Maybe the local
people will help!

Forget the people.
They don't care.

People wouldn't be
so heartless.

And I will prove they are not!

What you doin'?

Sending out for sandbags
and sawdust.

Get outta here!

All we can do now
is wait and hope.

**

Oh!

You shouldn't
be up here!

I am going to get
to the bottom of this!

It is far too dangerous
for little girls.

Now go!

Very well.

Idealists --
always causing problems.

**

[ Speaks Russian ]

[ Water dripping ]

[ Board creaks ]

Aah!

Ugh!

**

[ Grunts ]

[ Groans ]

Mishka: Linka!

**

Another accident?

Ohh! I am beginning
to wonder.

Did you get a look
at my rescuer?

No.

There is something
familiar about him.

Perhaps a friend
of my childhood?

What is this?

It looks like
mine tailings.

I was down
in that shaft.

This stuff is mixed in
with the groundwater!

[ Gasps ] If that's true,

the mine must be
causing the sickness!

In a few minutes,
it will be too late

to stop the seepage.

Do not underestimate
the power of heart.

[ Indistinct talking ]

I never knew the people cared
so much about the town.

[ Indistinct talking ]

Let's go, guys.
We have a long trip ahead of us.

We must show Yuri
what we found.

[ Indistinct shouting ]
Look!

Stop! What's going on?

We are closing
this recycling plant

once and for all!

[ Indistinct shouting ]

You must not do this!

Out of my way!

[ Gasps ]

The plant
is not the problem!

The mine is causing
the sickness!

Look out!

No, please!

[ Electricity crackles ]

[ Alarm blaring ]

Aah!

[ Electricity crackles ]

The regulators are disabled!
We must evacuate at once!

[ Steam hisses ]

Aah!

Hurry! The steam
will activate the fire doors

and seal the building!

[ All screaming ]

You fool,
look what you've done!

When those boilers
blow up,

the explosions will level the
plant and everything around it!

Mishka!

Mishka, where are you?

Linka.

[ Alarm blaring ]

We must get out of here!
Come on!

What now?

[ Steam hissing ]

Oh!

Ugh!

[ Gasps ]

[ Grunts ]

Are you all right?

The boiler is going to blow!

Looks like you risked your life
for me one too many times.

There is no way out.

What is this?

Huh?

My ring?

But how...

Wheeler!

I can't believe I'm sayin' this,
but we better get outta here!

I'd blowtorch the door
if -- if I could see it!

No problem! Wind!

Fire!

[ Both grunt ]

Once the first boiler blows,
it will trigger

a monumental explosion.

We don't have time
to get clear!

Then we must
reach Ma-Ti.

He is our only hope.

Oh, little buddy,
we need you now.

Heart.

Kwame,
call Captain Planet!

What?
No time to explain!

Trust me!

Let our powers combine.

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!

Ma-Ti: Heart!

By your powers combined,
I am Captain Planet!

All: Go, Planet!

[ Alarm blares ]

Looks like someone's steamed.

[ Steam hissing ]

[ Grunts ]

I love this
high-pressure work.

[ Inhales sharply ]

[ Blows ]

[ All cheer ]

The emergency is over!

Now,
the real work begins.

Remember, Planeteers,
the power is yours!

Now that the danger's over,
where were we?

I think I must have mistaken you
for a mysterious stranger.

[ Birds chirping ]

Why are you here?

I -- I came to apologize.

I thought mining was
the only way to save the town.

Now that the doctor knows
what is causing the illness,

he feels confident Grandma
and the others will recover.

Unfortunately, our water
may never again be safe.

After I clean up the mine,

I promise I will work hard

to make the recycling plant
a success.

We have to leave now,
too.

I understand.

But I am needed here.

You will keep in touch.

Of course.

[ Suchi chitters ]

Never lose heart, Linka.

I will miss you, Ma-Ti.

[ Suchi chitters ]

[ Chuckles ]
You too, Suchi.

Wheeler?

He's in with Grandmother.
That Wheeler is quite a guy.

Da, he is.

Please, do take this
to remember us by.

Thanks.

[ Clears throat ]

The others
are ready to leave.

I just wanted
to say goodbye.

Yeah, I guess.

I am sorry, Wheeler.

Darling, what you did
for our town was wonderful.

But as a Planeteer,

you have the power to help towns
all over the world.

Now go.

Oh, thank you, Grandma.

I love you.

Write often?

Yes. Now, hurry!

What took you so long?

[ Laughter ]

So are you sure you really
wanna leave your beloved Mishka?

Well, it is not easy.

I have never loved anyone
like I love Mishka.

After all, Mishka is the best
big brother in the world.

Planeteers: Go, Planet!

Ma-Ti:
Toxic chemicals get shipped

through cities
and towns everywhere.

But many places
don't have plans

for dealing
with chemical spills.

Contact your mayor
or fire department

to find out
if your town is prepared.

Right, Suchi?

[ Suchi chitters ]

If there is a plan,
find out how it works.

If there isn't,
you and your parents

can urge officials
to start one.

Make sure your town
isn't caught unprepared.

Planeteers: Go, Planet!

Gi: Careless development
has destroyed

much of the Louisiana
black bears' home.

And only a few are left.

Kwame: But in some countries,

bear organs and paws
are still in great demand.

We should pass laws to make
trading in bear parts illegal.

We should protect all animals
whose habitats are threatened.

Kids, write your government
representatives.

Your letters
can save Teddy bears

and endangered animals
around the world.

The power is yours!

Earth!

Fire!

Wind!

Water!
Heart!

All: Go, Planet!

By your powers combined,
I am Captain Planet!
