Big Sky (1997–1999): Season 2, Episode 5 - A Family Affair - full transcript

- [Paula] Hi guys.

- [Woman] Hi Paula.

- Sorry I'm late.

Hey Dean!

How you going?

- Hey.

- What are you doing back here?

I thought I found you
somewhere to live.

- Oh, I got kicked out of the flat.

Angie's using again.

Gotta get her out of the city.

She doesn't have a hope here.

- Okay well first things first.

Let's find you somewhere to live.

- Dean.

- Angie.

- You got 50 bucks, I
really need some money.

- Where we gonna get
that sort of money from?

- We just got some cash
yesterday and I thought...

- Yeah, to buy food.

- Yeah but please man?

- Babe, you've got it in for
this, you've gotta stop.

- Ang, maybe we can get you
in on another program.

- Dean?

- I gotta go get ang before
she does something stupid.

- Yep, sure.

- Don't give up on her, Paula.

- Don't worry, I'm here
for both of you, always.

- I just gotta get...

- Hey I need an ambulance!

(Soft music)

We help stray kids find places to live.

Get them onto programs
for their drug habits,

that sort of thing.

- I'm interested in one
of the kids you know,

called Dean.

- Dean, why?

- Well not particularly Dean,

but his father, George klenna.

He's my Mr. big.

He's the major importer and distributor

of narcotics in this country.

I've been after him for
years with no luck.

- Well I hope you do get him.

Dealers are the scum of the earth

and they should all be locked up.

- So you would have no trouble

persuading Dean to
help us do just that?

- Yeah.

Get him to set up his father.

- That's right, if he agrees.

- No wait a minute.

- No, Chris, it's okay.

I can do this.

Anything that puts a creep like that

out of action, I'm happy
to go along with.

- Well I'm not, and I've made clear.

It's too dangerous.

- Well it's even more
dangerous to do nothing

and let him keep supplying kids.

I'll go and talk to him now.

I'll let you know how it goes.

- Now Paula...

- Chris, this is something
that I do outside of work.

You can't stop me.

- I'm not asking her to do anything

she doesn't want to do.

- [Chris] I can't believe
she agreed to do it

in the first place.

- [Lightfoot] I knew she would.

- [Chris] How?

- [Lightfoot] Her younger
brother idea of an overdose

some years ago.

(Slow music)

- She's the last person
you should involve.

Dan, the end always justifies
the means, doesn't it?

- Call me when she comes back.

(Mysterious theme music)

- Hey.

You awake?

Open eyes.

- I'm glad I'm here.

- Yeah, me too.

- Oh and how's Maxime?

- He'll be home from school soon.

- I think we have to tell him, jimbo.

It's time.

- Yeah I know.

I will.

- [Dean] You can't go on like this ang.

- I'm okay.

I've got you.

It's all I need.

I'm sorry.

- [Paula] Hello?

- [Angie] Is that the cops?
- [Dean] It's okay.

- [Paula] Dean?

- [Dean] My old man's a dealer?

- [Paula] He's a big time d,

he's like the guy that
brings the stuff in.

He's a major operator.

He's a real Mr. big.

- [Dean] Yeah, that'd be right scumbag.

- [Paula] So how since you've seen him?

- He kicked me and my mom
out when I was eight.

Met someone else.

You know that bastard never gave a cent

to look after me?

- [Paula] Well here's
your chance to get even.

Lightfoot wants you to help set him up.

- Nah, it'd never work.

Dad never wanted
anything to do with me.

- It'll be okay 'cause
lightfoot will have some plan.

Well, it's worth a try, isn't it?

Look, just think about Angie.

You know he's making millions
exploiting people like her.

What is the matter?

Look, what has he ever done for you?

- When you mentioned my father

I thought you'd met him.

And that he'd said he
wanted to see me, you know?

I always had this dream that someday

that might happen.

- I know but if it hasn't happened yet,

it's probably not going to.

And isn't it better to do
something now for Angie

than to hang around for some reunion

that's probably never gonna happen.

- Look Paula, I'm trying to
get out of this whole scene,

not deeper into it.

Now look, Angie's the only one

I've got time to worry about right now.

- So do it for her.

- I don't wanna do it.

All right, stop hassling me.

- Okay.

Just think about it
some more for me, okay?

- Well there's never any
guarantee it would work.

- Maybe I came on too strong.

Maybe I should just go...

- Dean's not interested.

That's the end of it.

- Should I have offered him some money?

- Paula, listen to what you're saying.

- I wanna get this guy.

Is there anything else we can do?

- Not that I could think of, thank you.

Klenna, damn him.

- Don't shudder me.

- Wait Max, we've actually gotta
have a little talk first.

- Hey look, we got mail.

One's for me and mom.

From our neighbors in bombar hill.

- That's nice, listen to me, okay?

This is serious.

- Look, their dog, pearl's, had pups.

Mom said we could keep one.

Can we please?

- Forget the puppies, okay?

Look we gotta talk about your mom.

- If she's still sick,

then why did they let
her out of hospital?

Should have let her stay
in til she got better.

- That's the thing.

She's not gonna get better.

- So she's gonna stay sick forever?

- No.

No she's gonna get sicker.

Even though she's gonna
fight, you know,

like she has been.

Well sometimes you fight so
hard that you get tired,

you know, and you can't go on.

And it's a relief when it stops.

Do you understand what I'm saying?

Your mom,

your mom's not gonna live much longer.

Max, come on.

Maxie, we gotta talk about this, okay?

- Don't call me that.

Mom calls me that, not you.

(Phone ringing)

- Excuse me Mr. klenna.

There's a young man outside.

He says he's your son.

- Send him in.

- Hi dad.

- Hello Dean.

You look bloody terrible.

I was sorry to hear your
mother passed away.

I was wondering how long you'd take

before you showed your face.

So what do you want, money?

- I think you owe me.

- Of course I do.

You never call, you never write,

you just prance up out of the blue

and ask me for a handout.

You've got a bloody nerve.

- Yeah, well you didn't
contact me either.

- Yeah well.

So, what do you want?

How much?

- I want 500 bucks.

- What's it for?

- A girlfriend, she's in a bad way.

That's why I figured,

just get some money,

we could get out of here.

- So what's her problem?

- She's just in trouble.

- Just in trouble, is she?

You got your mother's eyes.

But at least you're clean.

I take it your girlfriend's not?

Junkie, is she?

- Her name's ang, and
yeah she's a junkie.

But she's trying to get off the stuff,

but it's hard.

That's why if we could
just get some money

we could get out of here.

- There's your bus fare.

- I never asked you for
anything in my entire life.

I'm your son.

- And I'm still your father.

And I'm telling you I don't
give handouts to junkies.

Now is there anything else
you wanna see me about?

Shut the door on your
way out as a good boy.

(Dramatic music)

- Dean!

(Indistinct shouting)

Dean!

- White with one, right?

- Good memory.

- Some things you never forget.

Um about the other night.

- I've been thinking about that.

Um, it's gonna be pretty hard,

for us working together.

- Yeah, no that's
exactly what I thought.

Working together, too messy.

Better off just as friends.

- Ah that's good.

We both feel the same way.

- I'll get the coffee for you.

- Have you seen this?

We've got our afi and license
reel test this week.

Why didn't we get any notice?

- We just did.

- Not much.

- [Mom] Hey, maxie.

- I don't want you to die, mom.

- Oh sweetheart, neither do I.

- You okay, Jo?

- I can look after her.

- Joey?

- You're busted!

I just wanted to help her.

And you killed her.

You killed Angie!

- What do you want me to
do with him, Mr. klenna?

- Just show him out, Joey.

- [Joey] Come on!

(Slow music)

- [Dean] Angie never had a chance.

- [Paula] She had you.

You made a big difference in her life.

- [Dean] I couldn't help her.

- [Paula] You did everything you could.

- [Dean] Not enough.

- Dean, I know what you're
going through, believe me.

But you can't blame yourself

because it will just eat away at you

and you'll go crazy.

- That guy with the funny name.

- Lightfoot?

- Yeah.

I wanna talk to him.

Whatever it takes to
get him, I'll do it.

- [Chris] And you're absolutely sure?

- We've talked about it.

We're gonna get him, right?

- Yeah, I got scores to settle.

- Dean,

I appreciate this.

- Yeah, well I don't want a medal.

I wanna nail him.

- So, what's the plan?

- First thing is you
have to re establish

a relationship with your father.

- After he's wanted
nothing to do with me

all these years?

- I need him to trust you.

- And how's he going to do that?

- One of his most reliable
couriers, Jeff the mule

is behind bars.

He owes me a favor.

Klenna will check with him.

He'll vouch for Dean.

Believe me, he will.

Do whatever you have to do.

Whatever it takes.

Apologize to him.

Say you're sorry.

He was right about your
little junkie girlfriend.

She was just a waste of space.

- Take it easy.

- If you can't take that from me son,

you're not up to the job.

- Yeah, she was a waste of space.

- You can do this.

You're gonna be fine.

- Paula, can I see you for a minute?

- Yeah.

Good luck.

- Are you sure you know what
you're doing with Dean?

- What do you mean?

We're gonna get klenna.

- Is that what he wants,
or just what you want?

- It's his decision.

- Really?

I know about your brother.

- Nick's got nothing to do with this.

- From where I stand
it looks like he does.

I don't think you realize
what you're expecting

Dean to do.

- And I don't think you
realize what klenna's doing.

I know these kids.

I know what people like
him do to their lives.

He's the one in the
wrong, Chris, not me.

- I'm worried about you, Paula.

I don't think you should have
any more to do with this.

- Will you just get off my back?

This is between me and
Dean and lightfoot

and it has got nothing to do with you.

- Your judgements been clouded.

And you're putting everybody at risk,

and I'm not prepared
to let that happen.

- What the hell would you know

about living on the streets?

About having a habit
that you never wanted

and you can't afford?

If you had any idea what it was like

you wouldn't hesitate
to do whatever it takes

to get rid of scum like klenna.

- [Chris] You sure you wanna be here?

- Yeah, sure I'm sure.

I wanna work, I'll set the test.

It'll do me good.

- Yeah I don't know if
now is such a good time.

- Come on, Chris, let's just do it.

- [Chris] Shouldn't you be at home?

- [Jimbo] What for,
everything's under control.

(Slow piano music)

- [Announcer] Central
station, left in one,

train to bonborra heads,
depart in two minutes.

(Plane engine roaring)

- Turn left at 140.

- Yeah, Jodie told me to come to work.

Give me and Max a bit of time apart.

You know I think she's right.

We were getting on each others nerves

every now and then.

- Yeah look, jimbo, we don't
have to do this today.

- Oh come on.

What was the number trio?

- 140.

- Yeah, poor kid.

Hard to imagine what
he's going through.

- What about you?

- Oh me, I'm all right.

I'm fine you know.

I can handle it.

- Okay, make your instrument approach.

You know your minimum out
of chip for landing?

- Yeah, 300 if I don't
have visual go Rouge,

yeah no problem.

(Train engine roaring)

(Somber music)

- I should never have let
you talk me into it.

Let's just forget it ever happened.

We'll do it some other time.

- If you can't stand the wind shears

stay out of the cockpit.

Is that it?

- I'm just trying to help you.

- And you call that help?

I was fine until you
started hassling me.

- Jimbo, I'm not the problem here.

- Is that what Caesar said to brutus

after he'd stabbed him?

Et tu, Chris.

- Jimbo?

- How the hell did you get in here?

- Ah nobody takes much
notice of a cleaner.

Wait, not gonna cause any more trouble.

- Bill?

- [Bill] Everything all right, Mr.
klenna?

- It's okay bill, no problem.

- [Bill] Well that's good.

- So what do you want?

- I'm here because I'm
sorry about the place.

I'd like to pay you back.

- Oh, how are you gonna get the money?

Steal it?

- Well if you gave me a job

I thought maybe I could
work it off out of that.

- Well, let me get this right.

First you want money for
your junkie girlfriend.

Then you smash up my office
saying I killed her.

Now suddenly you wanna be friends.

Well, excuse me but
you're not making sense.

- Forget it.

You know you were right about ang.

She was a waste of space.

Just what the mule said.

- Who?

- The mule, Jim Henry.

- You know the mule?

- Yeah, I did some work for him once.

So you gonna give me a job?

I'll do anything.

- You will, will you?

- Yeah.

Can't really afford to be choosy.

- You'll do anything?

- Yeah.

- Well I'll see what I can do.

Give me a call at one.

I might have something for you.

Oh, here.

Here's some money.

Get yourself some decent clothes.

Don't worry about the office.

It's insured, everything
I do is insured.

- So one o'clock then?

Thanks.

- What about the neighbors?

- Well I asked around.

Nobody saw him go anywhere.

I'm so sorry.

- I know, it's all right.

- I haven't said anything to Jodie.

I thought I'd better not.

- [Jodie] Jimbo?

- Yeah, you all right?

- What are you doing,
why aren't you at work?

- Oh there wasn't much going on at work

so I thought I'd come home.

- Maybe you should try
talking to maxie again.

Don't leave too long.

- Yeah, that's a good idea.

- You'll sort it all out.

- Yeah of course I will.

Look I'm gonna go check
the streets, you know.

Check out his local haunts,

his favorite places.

- Can I help, what about his friends?

- No there's only a few of them.

Most of them are in bonborra heads.

- I could try the hospitals.

Or the police?

- Bloody puppy.

There was a neighbor in bonborra heads,

their dog had a litter of puppies.

He kept going on about getting one.

That's what it is.

- Dad has made contact with the mule.

I've just had confirmation
of a large shipment

coming into the country.

He'll need help to
distribute that fast.

That's where you come in, hopefully.

- Guess we're just about to find out.

- Hey it's me.

Ringing like you asked.

- Listen,

I want you to come to my place
in the mountains tonight.

Take a train to mt. Osborne

and a taxi to minimarrow.

They'll know what it is.

You got any money left?

- Yeah enough.

- Good lad.

I'll see you at seven then.

- Seven o'clock, that
doesn't give us much time.

- [Jimbo] Please don't
try and stop me, Chris.

I've gotta find Max.

- I'm not trying to stop you.

I wanna go with you.

You're in no condition
to fly the plane.

- But I'll be fine, okay.

It'll only take me about 20 minutes.

- Jimbo, let me come with you.

- Hey Chris?

The police are here.

Lightfoot's ready for his briefing.

- Is there anybody else
who can go with him?

- I'm sorry, they're too
busy or they've done

their hours today.

- Jimbo?

Just concentrate on
what you're gonna do.

Stay on the radio.

Monitor the whole flight.

If he's trouble you let me know.

- We're assuming that klenna
will use Dean as a courier.

As soon as Dean sighted the goods

you give the signal yet
to be decided upon

and golen and his men move in.

- Scotty, you'll fly to man
Scofield with Dean and golan.

Lightfoot and I'll take the chopper.

We'll land at man Scofield at 1845.

Dean will transfer to a taxi

driven by one of golan's officers.

- There will be three unmarked cars

and more police.

They'll follow the taxi to the house.

- I'll try and land as close
to the house as I can

in case you need a quick exit.

Scotty, stay with the
plane at the airstrip.

- What am I doing?

- I think it's best you're not part

of the operation.

- No way.

- Yeah, I wanted her.

- Okay, you go to the
airstrip with Scotty.

- I'm going to the house with the cops.

- [Lightfoot] Paula?

- Look, I'm the one who
convinced Dean to do this.

I can't expect him to
go through with it

on his own, prepared to do the same.

- Very well, you can go in
one of the unmarked cars

with golan.

- Well what happens if
something goes wrong?

- That's what the signal's for.

Also Dean, if you get into
trouble, give the signal.

The police will be in in 10 seconds.

- Why not just wire him?

- Teller caught me with a wire.

It's too risky.

I'll give you the signal in the plane.

Okay, that's it.

(Dramatic music)

- Well.

- Hope it all goes well.

- Yeah, me too.

- Take care of yourself.

- Sure.

- You still got that trip
to red hue you promised.

- Yeah you bet.

- Come on, Scotty.

You okay?

- Yeah.

- We're gonna get him.

Hey,

here.

For good luck.

I bought it for my brother
for his birthday.

He had this dream of being in a band,

but he didn't get to his birthday.

So I hope that brings you good luck.

(Plane engine roaring)

- Chris!

I just got word, jimbo's
plane landed safely.

- Good, good.

- Hey, what the hell do
you think you're doing?

- What are you doing here?

- What do you think I'm doing here?

I'm looking for you.

I was going out of my mind.

I didn't know what happened to you.

- Well I'm all right, aren't I?

- Yeah well I didn't know that.

Look I got enough to worry about

without thinking about you
doing a disappearing act.

- Let go, I wanna go get my puppy.

- Yeah, that's all you
care about isn't it?

Your bloody puppy.

- It's not all I care about.

Mom wants it, not me.

- Hey, your mom's too
sick to be bothered

by puppies, all right?

- What would you know?

You were the one who made her
sick in the first place.

She was okay until she married you.

If she dies it's your fault.

- Come on Max.

- Let go, I hate you.

You don't care.

- Yes I care.

- You don't show it.

- I'm just trying to be strong for you.

Man, I don't want your mom to die.

I'm just angry that
we won't get to spend

any time together.

I'm not ready for her to go yet.

There's just nothing
else I can do for her.

(Somber music)

How's he handling it?

- Perfect, like a veteran.

Mom will be so rapped.

- I'm still not so sure about the name.

Homer?

- She really likes the Simpsons.

- Oh it's your fault.

- [Shay] Charlie tango
delta, this is big sky base.

- Charlie tango delta,
go ahead big sky.

Oh Shay, I found Max.

- [Shay] Jimbo, Jodie's nurse phoned.

She said it's urgent that you get back.

- Okay, I've got that big sky.

- Jimbo, where will
mom go when she dies?

- Well I'm not so sure about heaven,

but I reckon we've got souls.

You know that part of
you that makes you you?

Well I reckon that exists
forever, you know.

Like even after you die.

- So even after mom's gone,

she'll still be here?

- Yeah I'm sure she will.

- Mom?

- Hey maxie, where have
you been sweetheart?

I missed you.

- Oh we've just been
picking up a few things.

Like...

(Puppy whining)

- His name's homer.

He's one of pearl's.

- Pearl's pups, doh!

- Oh he's beautiful, hello.

(Chopper engine roaring)

- Remember if he doesn't
make you an offer

just let it go.

Don't push it.

Live to fight another day.

He'll ask you to deliver something

and you give the signal

and bolt out the back door.

No heroics, I'll run
through it for you again.

According to surveillance on the house

there's a bathroom
beside the back door.

When you wanna give the signal

excuse yourself to go to the toilet.

Then flash the light on and off, twice.

- Would you like another beer?

- Ah no, I'm all right
with this, thanks.

- You sure?

- Yeah.

- I'll have one.

So, tell me about yourself.

What have you been up to?

Trying to get by on the streets?

- Oh, any way you can really.

- Yeah, so what do you do?

Mug little old ladies, eh?

Rob the church collection box?

- I've had a proper job.

- Yeah but you couldn't hold it down.

Well, I understand.

Straight job, it has too much
line hard work, isn't it?

- Yeah well when anything goes wrong

I'm the first to blame, aren't I?

There's not many people out there

prepared to give someone
like me a chance.

(Helicopter buzzing)

- What's that?

- There was an accident on the way up.

Probably just news chopper.

- Oh yeah.

- The way some people take those bends.

Must happen a lot.

- Yeah.

Well some people never learn, do they?

- [Chris] This is about
as close as I can get.

- This will have to do.

The others should get a better view.

This is Richmond, nothing
this side of the house.

Steady fiver.

- [Scotty] Copy that Richmond.

- [Paula] What's going on,
has something happened?

- Austin, any action?

- [Austin] Negative.

Just a quiet chat.

- Come on Dean, do it.

Get him.

- Will you keep it down?

- I was surprised when you told me

you'd worked for the mule.

- Why's that?

- Oh the way you carried on about that

junkie girlfriend of yours.

You didn't seem like the type
cut out for the business.

- Guess I must have just
got in over my head.

You know what it's like?

- No, I don't, tell me.

- Well you think I would have learned.

Wouldn't I?

On the streets you can't
afford to be sentimental.

Must have let my guard down.

- Anyway, I gave him a call.

- Yeah?

- You know what he said?

- No.

- He said you were okay.

Listen, you'll forget
about that junkie slag.

A good looking lad like you,

you can have the pick of
the crop, believe me.

- Yeah, yeah I reckon I could.

- Of course you could.

Come here.

(Mysterious music)

I want you to take my car

to that address.

They'll be a man there,

and this.

He'll give you a set of keys to a van.

And an envelope, inside the envelope

they'll be an address.

Now you take the van to the address.

And you leave the van there
with the keys in it.

Just walk away.

Get yourself a taxi to the regal ritz.

There will be a room
there in your name.

You got that?

- I pick up an address
and a van from here.

Then I drive the van
to the next address.

Then dump it.

Then I get a taxi to the regal ritz.

- Good lad.

- What about you?

- What about me?

- Well what are you gonna do?

- I'll see you at the ritz later.

- Yeah and then what?

- You're a nosy little
bugger, aren't you?

Always asking questions.

You remind me of me
when I was your age.

- Really?

- Listen, if you do well with this,

we'll have a chat about the future.

- Yeah, yeah great.

- There you go.

- Cheers.

- [Lightfoot] Still nothing?

- There's nothing at
the rear of the house.

- Austin, any activity?

- Negative.

- Toilet?

- Just down there on the right.

- Cheers.

(Mysterious music)

- Just a minute.

- Yeah?

- I just wanna tell you

you know I'm sorry we didn't
get to know each other better.

It's my fault, I take the blame.

I did look for you

after your mother died.

- You did?

- Yeah, I found out you'd moved in

with your mother's sister

so I reckoned you were okay.

- But I wasn't.

- Yeah, I know.

Now I know.

But I'm glad we found each other.

- You really mean that?

- Yes I do.

(Dramatic music)

It's good that we finally

got the chance to talk.

- This place is surrounded by the cops.

It's a set up.

This whole place is
surrounded by the cops.

Dad,

I'm sorry.

- Yeah, well so am I.

You're a good kid.

(Tires screeching)

- He's making a break.

- Copy that, we're on our way.

- [Man] We got that.

- He's getting away.

- Paula, Paula?

(Tires screeching)

(Siren blaring)

- Get her out of the way.

(Chopper engine roaring)

- Come on Chris, they'll lose him.

- Dean!

What happened?

You let him go, didn't you?

- Everything he did I
was ready to forget.

- How could you.

We were counting on you.

- I just wanted my dad back.

(Siren blaring) (Chopper
engine roaring)

- [Man] Can't see, where is he?

- Got him.

- [Man] Stand by,

Peter's ahead of him.

Just keep going.

(Siren blaring)

- He's turned right off the main road

a few hundred meters from the house.

- [Man] Got that Romeo Sierra.

I think we have him just ahead.

- My boys are too far behind him.

He's getting away.

(Siren blaring)

- [Man] Get him off the road,
he's going the other way.

Turn around.

(Tires screeching)

(Siren blaring)

- [Man] Got a visual, Romeo Sierra.

We're just behind him.

(Siren blaring)

- He's getting away.

- I won't.

Hang on.

(Screaming)

- Lost control.

(Tires screeching)

- Quick second.

- Well done.

- Lightfoot, you bastard!

- So you finally got him.

Does it feel good?

- Why thank you Mr. manning.

(Chopper engine roaring)

(Indistinct chatter)

- You must be pleased with
the way things turned out?

- I thought I would.

I thought it would help but it hasn't.

I miss him, Chris.

I miss Nick so much.

- What are you still doing here?

- I was worried about you.

- You waited back for me?

Thought we were just work colleagues?

- And I can't worry
about a work colleague?

- Yeah sure you can.

- So what's your problem?

- I haven't got one.

- Scotty, about us just being friends.

- I agree, bad idea.

- Come on mate, time for bed.

- I don't wanna go.

- Let him stay.

I love you maxie.

- I love you too, mom.

- I love both of you very much.

(Dog whining)

(Laughing)

- You're leaving?

- I've gotta get out of there
like I promised Angie.

- Well where are you gonna go?

- I don't know, anywhere.

It doesn't matter.

- Dean, I'm sorry.

I shouldn't have asked
you to get involved.

And it's my fault that you got hurt.

I was just trying to
deal with my own stuff.

I'm sorry.

- Nick was lucky to
have you as a sister.

Wish I had.

(Waves crashing)

(Dog whining)

(Somber music)

- Don't let go mate.

Mom's gone.

- No she isn't.

She's still around, I can feel her.

(Serene theme music)

(Network ten jingle)

(southern star jingle)
