Big Sky (1997–1999): Season 1, Episode 9 - Coming to Terms - full transcript

Chris and Robbie panic when their son Jack goes missing. They spend a few anxious hours searching before he turns up on Chris' doorstep, wanting to live with his dad now. Robbie's suspicions that Jack is unhappy about the new man in her life have been confirmed.

(Phone ringing)

- Chloe?

Chloe, did he say where he was going?

- He was here after school.

- Did he say where he was going?

Look, I'm sorry, sweetheart.

I'm just a bit worried, okay?

Maybe he's gone to Jason's place.

- You're out a bit late, aren't you?

- Yeah.

- What's your name?

- Jack.

- Where are you going?

(Knocking on door)

- Yeah?

- Chris, is Jack here?

- Of course not.

Why would he be?

- I can't find him anywhere.

I've been driving
around looking for him.

He's not at any of his friend's places.

He came home from school and
I haven't seen him since.

- You go to hatfield primary.

- Yeah.

- Whose class you in?

The next bus won't be
along for 20 minutes.

You want to come with me?

I'll take you to my sister's

and drive you where you're going.

- No, it's all right.

- Are you sure?

Come on.

A young bloke like you needs
a bit of looking after.

Hey!

- [Robbie] Just seems weird
there was no warning at all.

- So you think I just didn't notice it.

- Has he done it before?

- Of course not, I would have told you.

- Well, I don't get it.

Has he run away?

Why would he bolt suddenly?

- Will you stop interrogating me?

I'm telling you I've got
no idea where he is.

- Come on.

- Hey, come on!

It's all right!

(Soft vocalizing music)

- You don't listen to anything.

Whenever there's an argument,

you've got a different agenda

and you don't listen to a word I say.

All I asked was if something
had happened at school.

That's all.

- It could have.

We didn't talk about it.

- Why not?

You're his mother. You're
the one living with him.

- Chris, I told you.

He came home from school.

Half an hour later, he was gone.

We didn't talk about anything.
- Well, maybe you should of.

- Listen, don't start attacking
me again, all right?

You always do this.

Whenever there's a problem, you
fly over whoever's closest.

- We're sitting here
waiting for the cops

to call us about our missing son

and I'm not supposed to have a problem.

- This is so typical.

You blame everyone else but yourself.

- How is it my fault?

- I don't need this.

If the police don't call,
I'll see you tomorrow.

- Yeah, good.

- Dad?

- Are you in trouble.

Where have you been?

What are you doing here?

We've been looking for you all night.

- I want to live with you.

- God, I never want to
go through that again.

- Yeah, he's one angry kid.

What's going on?

- It's probably a reaction to Steve.

- Who's Steve?

- We've been going out
for a couple of months.

He started staying
over a few weeks ago.

- I see.

- What's that supposed to mean?

- Well, Jack's obviously
upset by this guy.

- I know you'd be like this.

Chris, I am entitled to have a life.

- I didn't say you weren't.

- No, but you implied it.

- Robbie, he's so angry
he's run away from home.

Who's more important
here, Jack or Steve?

- That's unfair and you know it.

Don't you load me up with
that one for god's sake.

- Is it serious?

- I'm not sure.

(Aircraft whirring)

(Frogs croaking)

- Amplexus.

She lays her eggs, he jumps
on and fertilizes them.

- So it's all done outside the body?

- Not my idea of a good time, but...

- Well, I think they're enjoying it.

Look, his eyes are crossed.

- Give me a look.

They are not!

- I've started a breeding
program for endangered species

at boree plains zoo.

This pair's been chosen
for their enthusiasm.

- You mean they're endangered frogs.

- What do you mean,
they're always at it.

- Unfortunately, yes.

- What's so unfortunate about that?

- The endangered part.

Developments encroaching
on their habitat.

This is one of only three pairs

of green and golden bell
frogs in captivity.

- So what do you call this again?

- Amplexus.

- Amplexus, huh?

- Is there anything you
want to tell me about,

about mum or anything?

- [Jack] No.

- [Chris] Nothing?

- Nope.

- Well, I don't think you're
giving her a fair go.

She's the same mum you've always had.

You gotta try and understand it.

- She doesn't do stuff with us anymore.

- Well, she's got her hands full.

Looking after you guys, going to work,

keeping the house going.

- How come you're taking her side?

- I'm not.

This Steve.

You're worried she's spending
too much time with him,

aren't you?

- You know about him?

- Yeah, of course I know about him.

Mum and I, we talk about everything.

So what's he like?

Is he a nice fella?

- He's stupid.

He sucks up to you all the time.

- Why, what's he do?

- He buys you presents.

He thinks he's so cool, but
he's not, and he's fat.

- He's fat?

- He took me and Chloe to this place

where you play mini golf.

- Well, that sounds okay.

- It's stupid.

- How about you come to
big sky with me today

and we can talk about things?

- Can I go on the plane with you?

- Maybe.

I've got some other
work, but we'll see,

and only if I can talk
mum into it, okay?

- She won't let me.

- Let's see what I can do.

- [Scotty] There you go, fabio.

Can't have amplexus without
chocolate, can we?

- Fabio?

- Yeah and Claudio.

- I don't believe this.

- He's a good little boy.

- Well, here's a good looking guy

and he brought his father.

- Hey, give me some skin, kid.

Gonna teach your old
man how to fly today?

- Well, we haven't sorted that out yet.

I've got some work to do, old fella.

How about you sit down there
and read one of your books?

- Come on. I'll take you
down to the rec room

and give you a game of darts.

- Thanks, Shay.

Don't let him take up
too much of your time.

- Well, what do you think?

- What is it?

- It's a dinner party.

It's my list.

I'm just wondering

what you think of the
seating arrangements.

- Well shouldn't Leonardo Da Vinci

be sitting next to Einstein?

They could talk about science.

- Boring.

- And who's this siddhartha gautama?

- Buddha.

- Well, why haven't you got Buddha?

- Buddha's his nickname.

That's his proper name.

- And when's this gonna happen?

- As soon as I finalize the guest list.

You don't think Karen carpenter's
overdoing it, do you?

She wouldn't eat much.

(Aircraft whirring)

- They're still at it.

- Stop perving on them.

- What, I'm not putting them off.

I don't think anything would.

- They smell.

- Well, they're animals.

They're mating animals.

I mean, that's what makes them
attractive to each other.

Kinda turns you on, doesn't it?

- A pair of slimy frogs?

You gotta be joking.

- Well, their lust,

you know, their animal passion,

their insatiable desire.

Mating is a basic instinct.

We've all got it.

- Some more than others.

- You can't invite Maggie Thatcher.

- Why not?

She's sitting next to Attila.

- She's alive.

- Since when do you have to be dead

to get invited to a dinner party?

- I thought that was the point.

- No, no, no, no,

they've just got to be
interesting people.

- Oh, but how do you know...
- [Lexie] Blue sky.

This is Juliet Oscar Charlie.

- Go ahead Juliet Oscar Charlie.

- Shay, we're on
approach at boree plains

and expect to be on the ground
in about 20 minutes time.

- Thanks, Lexie,

and remember your timing
for the (Mumbles) Run,

big sky base.

But how do you know they're interesting

if you've never met them?

- Are you saying these are
not interesting people?

- I'm saying they're dead.

- But they're interesting, right?

- Marilyn Monroe, she's
not interesting.

- But she's dead.

- She's got this bloke.

Sounds to me like

she hasn't talked to
them about him at all.

- She's entitled to
have a life of her own.

- Yeah, I know,

but you gotta give them
time to get used to him.

You gotta be a bit careful with kids.

- And ex-husbands.

- That's not the point.

If she wants to go out with
blokes, that's all right.

Of course, she can go out
with blokes if she wants to.

That's got nothing to do with me.

- Why are you making such
a big noise about it?

- You sound just like her.

- Well, what did she do?

Did she just spring this guy on them?

- No, no, she would have
tried to do it right.

She's a great mum, really.

She does a much better
job than I could do

if I had the kids.

But if he's running away, I
want to know exactly why.

- Makes me feel so selfish.

- How come?

- I've only got myself to worry about.

My life seems so uncomplicated.

- How's it going there, young fella?

- Okay.

- You make sure you keep
well clear, won't you?

- Mm-hmm.

- How about you go and
stand over there, okay?

Jack, remember, stand well back.

- Okay.

(Aircraft whirring)

- Jack, what did I tell you?

It could chop you in half!
- I wasn't gonna touch it.

I was just looking at it!

- I'm not compromising on safety.

It's just the cost.

- Well, lawsuits don't
come cheap either.

- I don't have the energy
to argue about this.

- I think we'll have to
keep the young bloke

out of the hanger for a while.

We nearly had a kid in a blender.

- I thought you were playing darts.

- I got sick of it.

When are we going flying?

- Well, what about the radio room?

You could help Shay talk to the pilots.

- I've done that.

When are we going in the plane?

- I got a lot of work to do here.

How about you get stuck into
one of these books I got you?

- But you said.

- Well, I'll be out soon and
then we can do something, okay?

- When soon?

You said.

- Jack.

(Soft music) (Aircraft whirring)

- We're way behind schedule.

- Hello.
- Hello.

- They seem to have developed
a fetish for chocolate.

- Oh, I'm sure their
dentist will thank you.

- Must be all that amplexusing.

I thought they needed an energy boost.

- Amplexus, very good.

You know all the right terms.

- Yeah, amplexus, I know
a bit about amplexus.

- Well, thanks very much.

See you.

- Bye.

I know a bit about amplexus.

- I do.

- Isn't there any woman
who's safe from you?

(Suspenseful music)

- Chris, just the guy I wanted to see.

Do you think Napoleon spoke English?

I mean, I know he was French.
- Corsican.

- What?

- He was corsican.

Have you seen Jack?

- Not for a while.

- Clear front!

(Aircraft whirring)

- Can service it right.

- Ronnie, seen Jack around anywhere?

- Mate, the kid stands
well clear of me.

- You're the big bad guy.

- Exactly.

- Sydney, Romeo hotel Sierra.

(Mumbles) Clearance.

- Romeo hotel Sierra, clearance.

Track for a mountain
scenic flight 8,000.

Score code 2366.

- [Clem] Romeo hotel Sierra ready.

- Romeo hotel Sierra, you
are clear for take off.

(Aircraft whirring)

Romeo hotel Sierra.

(Aircraft whirring)

- So that would put Shakespeare
between Moses and Buddha.

I mean, he wouldn't get
bored there, would he?

- I don't think so.

- Oh good, 'cause if I had to move him,

I'd have to work him up
here with Leonardo Da Vinci

and that'd mean moving Marie
antoinette next to Jesus.

I don't know.

What do you reckon?

- No good.

- Lauren.

- Mm?

- You're not listening.

- Jimbo, I'm busy.

Oh okay, okay, okay, what is it?

- Okay, you've got
Jesus next to mohamed.

- Of course.

- Well, won't they squabble?

- No, they'd get on great.

No, it's just their followers
that have a problem.

- Right maybe.

Who's this?

- The phantom.

- The phantom, he's not real.

Okay, okay, no, the
phantom, that's fine.

And the phantom is next to Moses.

Well sure, you can't argue with that.

(Aircraft whirring)

- Al, have you seen
Jack around anywhere?

Jim?

Seen Jack anywhere?

- No, I haven't seen
him anywhere, mate.

- Not on the plane?

- No, he's not on the plane.

- You didn't see him come
out at all, anywhere?

- No, mate.

- Lexie, about before, okay,

all that stuff was said
about wild animals.

- I think it's safer if you
don't say anything at all.

(Aircraft whirring)

- Lex, I'm just trying
to say I'm sorry, okay?

- Now maybe, but in two days time,

you'll be back to the same old Scotty

with the one track mind.

- Romeo hotel Sierra, Sydney.

We've had some reports of
moderate turbulence in your area.

- Sydney, I've already had some of it.

Thanks.

Romeo hotel Sierra.

- Lauren.

- Uh-uh-uh-uh,

if you ask me one more question
about that dinner party,

I'm gonna have to fire you.

- What, so you don't want to come?

- No, I'm busy that night.

When is it?

- Friday, 8:00 P.M.

- Can I sit next to the phantom?

- You'll have to get Chris

to put on some purple
underpants or something.

- Ew, yuck.

Who would you put me beside?

- I don't know, Cleopatra?

- Okay, fair enough.

Then can I have John
Lennon on the other side?

- I'll talk to yoko, but you got it.

(Liquid spilling)

- Damn!

(Sighs) God.

Who the hell are you?

All right now, just hold on.

Stay put and I'll be
with you in a minute.

Sydney, Romeo hotel Sierra.

- [Dispatcher] Go ahead
Romeo hotel Sierra.

- [Clem] Sydney, I've got a stowaway.

- Robbie, I wouldn't know.
- A boy about seven or eight.

- If he turns up at your
place, give me a call.

- Chris.

- Hang on.

- Tower's has just reported a
stowaway, eight year old boy.

Sound familiar?

- Robbie, I've found him.

I'll call you back.

- [Dispatcher] Go ahead,
Romeo hotel Sierra.

- Romeo hotel Sierra
requesting clearance

to return to Sydney for landing.

The child's sick.

- Romeo hotel Sierra,

do you require an ambulance on standby?

- No, Sydney.

He's just air sick.

- [Dispatcher] Romeo hotel Sierra,
track direct to Sydney...

- Little bugger.

I just aged 20 years.

- [Clem] Sydney approach.

Romeo hotel Sierra maintaining 5,000.

- Romeo hotel Sierra,
this is big sky base.

That's my son you've got on board.

- [Clem] Hold on, son.

- [Chris] Can you tell me your eta?

(Clem moaning)

- Are you okay?

- Romeo hotel Sierra,
this is big sky base.

Please reply.

(Clem moaning)

Why don't they respond?

- [Clem] Romeo hotel
Sierra, mayday, mayday.

- What's happening?

- Jack, Jack, can you hear me?

- I'm losing control of the aircraft.

I'm trying to find an
open space to land.

- Jack, if you can hear me,

reach down by the pilot's right knee.

There's a microphone.

Talk to me, son.

- The tower will have a fix.

- Jack, Jack, Jack, listen to me.

(Static)

(Dramatic music)

Please, not down there.

(Dramatic music)

- Chris.

It's just a car.

I'm sorry.

- Wake up, please.

You have to wake up.

(Clem murmuring)

- Don't worry.

Are you hurt?

- My arm hurts a bit, this one.

- (Mumbles) Me.

Sorry, your watch is busted.

Looks like your arm's busted too.

- Are you okay?

- My medicine in the bag.

- Is this it?

- It's a spray bottle.

Just one spray in my mouth.

- Your head's bleeding.

- I know.

- I'll get the first aid kit.

- Oh no, please don't.

Don't leave me.

- But I could bandage it for you.

- Just stay here for a while.

- Hello.

- It's for a kid's party

and this is crawley the crow.

Crawley, this is Scotty.

He's your pilot.

- Oh, this thing's stuffy.

Hi, Kate Lindsey.

- Hi, Scotty Gibbs.

So do all crows look
this good on the inside?

- See what I mean?

You never learn, do you?

This is the guy I told you about.

- Ah.

- What, what did she tell you about me?

- Like I thought,

you won't be able to get the suit on

once you're wearing the head

so you'll have to wear
it the whole way.

- What did you tell her about me?

(Aircraft whirring)

- Ah!

- I have to fix you up.

Don't go to sleep.

My dad will come and get us.

(Aircraft whirring)

- Here comes that cell westerly.

- Yes, there it is!

- That's it!

(Aircraft whirring)

- Wake up, they're coming.

Yeah dad, I'm here!

Dad!

(Aircraft whirring)

- You better radio in and get
the rescue chopper out here.

- Yeah.

- What are you doing?

- What's it look like?

- You can't.

- I reckon I can.

- What are you talking?

Look where that plane is.

- [Chris] I'll drop us in early.

- Chris, early is the trees.

We need 600 meters and a headwind.

We've got 400, if that.

- Woohoo!

- Chris, it's mathematics.

It's physics.

We can't do it.

- Tighten your seatbelt.

- I am extremely allergic to
crashing into other planes.

- Forget the crash.

The explosion would kill us.

(Aircraft whirring)

- It's too short.

We're not gonna stop in time.

We'll never make it!

(Jim yelling)

- You were right.

Jack!

- Ow.

He was talking before.

- Did you do that?

- He was bleeding.

- Good boy.

- Can you save him?

- Chris.

(Toilet flushing)

- Kate, you in there?

What's the matter?

- I' don't know.

It just came on all of a sudden.

Maybe it was something I ate.

(Kate coughs)

- Light plane crash, 65 year old male.

History of hypertension and angina.

- Jack.

Is he all right?

- Yeah, he's got a broken arm.

Bit of shock.

He'll be all right.

- Mr. manning,

we've got an examination
room waiting for your son.

- So you're a mate of Lexie's, eh?

- Known her for years.

- So she talks about
me a lot, does she?

- Can we just get going?

- Kate?
- Uh-huh.

- A little birdie told
me to give you these.

How are you feeling?

- Awful.

- Ah, don't worry.

Lexie's a good parachuter.

- I'm gonna go home and get
pjs for the both of us.

How about I smuggle in some
pizza for dinner, huh?

- I don't want pizza.

- I thought it was your favorite.

What do you want instead?

- Nothing.

Why can't you stay, dad?

- What about mum?

She's been waiting here
all afternoon for you.

- I want you to stay.

- Look, daddy's gotta be
at big sky really early.

I can stay all night and I
won't have to dash off.

- I want you to be here.

- Chris?

- Yeah, okay, I can ring
work, tell 'em I'll be late.

- Are you sure?

- Yeah, it's okay.

- All right.

You want dad to stay.

That's all right.

You be a good boy and get better, okay?

See you.

- I'll be five minutes.

Robbie.

I'm sorry.

- It's not your fault.

He's upset.

He's had a big day and
he wants his dad.

I understand.

I gotta go.

(Aircraft whirring)

- We always end up fighting.

Drives me crazy

'cause that's not how I
feel about her at all.

- I'm sure Lexie doesn't
like it either.

- It's just every time I'm around her,

I just want to impress her so much.

I get all tensed up and I
always say the wrong thing.

I don't know why.

I just can't stop myself.

- Just relax and be yourself.

It's not like she doesn't like you.

- She said that?

She likes me?

- Well, she said, you know,

you're a nice guy but you try too hard.

Why don't you just be her friend

instead of wanting to get
into her pants all the time?

- That's just it.

I really like her a lot.

She's smart, she's a good pilot.

You know, she's someone I could really.

- Where did you learn to fly?

- Sorry about that.

- What were you saying,
that you could really what?

- Oh, I don't know.

I think she's great, you know,

I just wish I knew how she
felt about me, you know,

if there's any hope.

- There's always hope, Scotty.

- I wish.

Hey, we're coming up
over the jump site.

This Juliet Oscar Charlie

on approach for parachute operations.

The jump site is five miles
north east of warri (Mumbles).

(Children chattering)

- Hey guys, come on.

Over here.

Quickly, come over here.

(Children chattering)

If you look up into the sky,

I think you can hear a plane coming.

And you know what that means?

- [Children] Crawley the crow!

- Amplexus!

(Children cheering)

- Dad, my arm really hurts.

- Yeah, I know.

They can't give you
anything for it, son,

in case there's something
wrong with your head.

You were very brave today.

I'm proud of you, tiger.

Here, move over.

This bed's torture.

I think you hurt mum's feelings today.

Are things so bad with Steve

that you had to run away from home?

- He's okay.

- Well, what's the problem?

- You'll just take her side again.

- No, I won't.

Promise.

- She spends all her time with him.

Whenever I ask to do something,

she says she's too busy.

- Well, you know what it's like
when you got a new friend.

You spend all your time with them.

It doesn't mean she doesn't love you.

- I want to come and live with you.

- Well, that's not possible, fella.

You're better off with your mum.

And what about Chloe?

You'd miss her.

- But I miss you.

- We see each other all the time.

- What happens if you
get a new girlfriend?

- It doesn't matter.

- But you said if you go
out with someone new,

you spend all your time with them.

- Well, the bottom line is

your mum's your mum and I'm your dad

and nothing's gonna change that.

- I did so.

- Liar, you did not.

- I did.

- You didn't.

Shay told you it was me in
the suit after you got back.

- No, I already knew in the plane.

- You are such a liar.

You had no idea it was me and
you meant every word you said.

- What if I did?

- Did you?

Scotty, that's the nicest
you've ever been to me.

And you thought you
were talking to a crow.

- Those stretcher beds
aren't the best, are they?

- Not real flash.

- This will only take a minute.

Jack, I want you to do
a few things for me.

Nothing to worry about.

Good.

Can you tell me your name?

- Jack manning.

- [Doctor] And whereabouts are you?

- In hospital.

- Good boy.

Now with your good hand,
squeeze my fingers.

That's good.

Now, last thing.

Press your feet against my
hands as hard as you can.

Good boy.

You can go back to sleep now.

- What about the old bloke
we came in with, the pilot?

- You know I can't give you too
many details, but not good.

- What's wrong with him?

- In his condition,

he should never have
been flying at all.

He had a massive heart
attack this afternoon

just after they brought him in.

There was nothing you
could have done for him.

- Chris, I was on my way home.

I thought I'd see how Jack was.

- Oh, he's fine.

He's gonna be okay.

- (Mumbles) Bounce back from
everything, don't they?

- Yeah, just about.

- Oh, is this okay?

I wasn't sure.

- Oh, that's great.

- How are things with Robbie?

- Well, we both lost him once

so now, we're even.

We can both be as guilty as each other.

- Is she here?

- What's in that?

- You're disgusting.

- Ah well, he's pretty angry with her.

Just wants his dad to be with him.

- You and Robbie gonna be
able to sort things out?

- Well, if I knew that,
we'd still be married.

- If she marries him,
he'll want to be my dad.

- Is that such a bad thing?

I think you're a lucky boy.

- But my dad's my dad.

- Yeah.

You think about it.

If your mum marries this Steve bloke,

you'll have an extra dad.

You'll have your main dad and a spare.

The same goes for your dad.

If he marries someone else,
you'll have a spare mum.

Good for Christmas and birthdays, eh?

Take my watch off.

I want you to have it
seeing as I busted yours.

- You didn't break it.

- I could have landed
that plane a bit better.

Hold it up to your ear.

Do you hear it ticking?

They don't make them like that anymore.

It'll still be ticking tomorrow

and it'll keep on ticking.

Do you understand?

Now, you look after it.

(Somber music)

- Wait here, dad.
