Big Sky (1997–1999): Season 1, Episode 7 - No Turning Back - full transcript

Chris is surprised when his ex-wife, Robbie, turns up on his doorstep, terrified; her date turned violent when she tried to break off their relationship. Chris moves into protective mode, and back into the house.

(Engine revving)

- [Chris] 10 hours on a flight,

isn't that your luggage?

- Yeah.

- All that for one weekend?

- Yeah, I don't know what
it'll be like in cootamundra.

It might get cold.

- Well I don't know anyone

that could possibly take this
much luggage for two days.

- I've got my horse riding gear

and something to dress up
in for Saturday night.

What am I justifying
my luggage to you for?

What I've got in luggage
is my business.

- Well, I normally just
take a toothbrush.

- And a clean pair of undies.

- Eh, just a toothbrush.

- Remind me never to go away
with you for the weekend.

- I don't recall making the offer.

- Have you got my mobile number?

- Yeah, yeah, we'll call
if the place burns down.

Just go and have some fun

if you can remember how.

- It has been awhile.

- Now, you forgotten anything?

- Thanks for your company.

Dinner was wonderful.

- Dinner was nice.

Thank you.

I'll call you.

- Well I was hoping, you know,

seeing as the kids are
at your mother's.

- That you'd come in for a night cap?

- What a great idea.

- Look mark, not tonight, okay?

- How come I never get
past the front door?

- Mark, it's just not happening for me.

It's not that you're not
really nice, you are.

I think you're great.

But um...

I'm sorry.

- It's okay.

- Well thanks.

I'll see you.

- Night.
- Night.

Hi mom.

Yeah it was fine.

How are the kids?

Good.

No, no.

Mmhmm.

Okay, I'll see you Sunday.

Bye, bye.

How did you get in?

- I recognized the come on.

You've been driving me crazy.

(Tense music)

(Glass shattering)

And now it's just not
happening for you.

- Mark, don't, please, don't.

(Grunting)

(Tense music)

- Robbie!

(Screaming)

Bitch!

(Tense music)

(Knocking on door)

- Yeah all right, I'm coming.

(Knocking on door)

(Crying)

- Chris.

Oh god.

- What?

What?

(Crying)

(Gentle music)

- Well his car's gone.

- It doesn't mean he has.

You wait here and lock the doors.

- I'm coming with you.

- All right.

(Ominous music)

(Door creaking)

(Ominous music)

- [Officer] Police, don't move.

- Just settle down, mate.

Be more trouble than you already are.

It was an honest mistake.

We were just going on
a domestic report.

- That's cool.

But ex-husbands aren't
always the bad guys.

- [Officer] So how long have
you known this mark Campbell?

- About three weeks.

- [Officer] Mmhmm.

And how did you meet?

- One of those dating services.

A late night phone one on TV.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

- [Officer] Address?

- I don't know.

- How many times you seen this bloke?

- Three.

He seemed like such a nice guy.

- Yeah.

This would be the guy
that attacked you?

- Chris, I know I'm
an idiot, all right?

I've got his mobile number.

- Mmhmm.

Is there anything else you
can tell us about him?

- He's a chemical engineer.

Some sort of chemical expert.

I'm sorry, that's all I know.

I feel so stupid.

- Well this isn't your fault.

We'll see what we can do.

Meanwhile, is there someone
that can stay with you tonight?

(Gentle music)

- Come on, sleepy head,
time to wake up.

Sleep well?

- Yeah.

It was a bit cramped
but apart from that,

how you doing?

- Knowing you were here helped.

(Knocking on door)

- I'll go.

- That's all right, it's probably mom.

- [Mark] Robbie, I just
wanted to apologize.

- I've got nothing to say to you,

now get out of here
before I call the police.

- [Mark] There's no need
to involve the police.

- That's true.

So get the hell out of here.

- Didn't realize you had company.

So you do come across
every now and again?

(Tense music)

- Now you stay away from this place.

You stay away from her.

- All right, all right.

Sorry, okay?

I'm sorry, Robbie.

I won't bother you again.

- No, I'm not calling jimbo for you.

You're not gonna miss work.

- [Chris] And I'm not
leaving you alone.

- Chris, you heard
him, he won't be back.

- [Chris] Well I'm not
gonna take the chance.

- God, I hate this.

I hate feeling this vulnerable.

- [Chris] So let me stay.

- I'm at the mercy of a man

because of his physical strength

and I have to rely on a
man to get me out of it.

- We're not all the enemy, you know?

- Look, I'll call Fiona and
we'll go shopping or something.

- [Chris] You sure?

- Yeah, I'm not giving in to this guy

besides, a bit of retail
therapy is just what I need.

Especially since I've got the luxury

of being kid-free all weekend.

- [Chris] All right.

Well, I finish about six.

Make sure you're not
back before then, okay?

- Yes, sir.

- And Lauren called
about five minutes ago

just to make sure everything was okay.

- That'll be all right.

- I told her to get over it.

She's about to go horse riding

with a guy with three
names and a hyphen.

- Yeah, that'll be all right.

- Your charter.

- What do you reckon,

doctor, accountant?

- I don't know.

His money was the same
color as everyone else's.

- All right.

Jimbo'll be in soon.

If Robbie calls, find me.

- Okay.

- Hey.

Chris manning, your pilot.

- Neil Davidson.

- [Chris] Echo whisky Victor,

request airway's clearance.

- Echo whisky Victor,

clear to taxi,

time two, three and a half.

Echo whisky Victor, clearance track

for a charter flight direct to dubbo,

a cliff takeoff.

- Echo whisky Victor.

(Tense music)

- Sure?

Plenty more.

- No.

- Sydney flight service,

this is echo whisky Victor.

- [Male] Echo whisky Victor,

confirm changing to dubbo ebz

and cancel seo Atlantic.

(Tense music)

- Take off.

- What?

- No, no, you just get us out of here.

(Gunshots firing) (Dramatic music)

- What the hell's going on?

- Just fly the plane.

Where's the nearest air strip?

- Warren.

- How far?

- 100ks.

- Okay, do it.

No radio contact.

- But I have to...

- Didn't you hear what I said?

No radio contact.

I just got to have time to think.

- I don't know where he is.

- [Male] Where do you want these, love?

- Down there.

- [Male] You beauty.

- I can get a warrant to
get hold of his schedule.

- Big deal, take the schedule.

It's not gonna tell you anything more.

A Mr. Neil Davidson,

one way to dubbo,

eta 15 minutes ago.

- And the pilot hasn't
been in touch at all?

- No.

- You better get him
on the radio, then.

- Look, is there anything wrong?

- There could be.

- [Jimbo] Hey Shay.

- [Shay] Jimbo.

- What's the problem?

- I'm detective Taylor,

this is detective Harrison.

We've got reason to believe
that one of your pilots

may have a dangerous criminal on board.

(Tense music)

- So what's with the weapon?

- I need it.

- [Jimbo] Echo whisky
Victor, this is big sky.

- I'm gonna have to answer it.

Big sky, this is echo whisky Victor.

- [Jimbo] Chris, seems there's
a problem with your cargo.

I need to know what
your intentions are.

- [Neil] Don't tell him anything.

- [Chris] Sorry jimbo,

my cargo hasn't decided yet.

- [Jimbo] Chris, we really need to know

what's going on up there.

- I appreciate your situation, jimbo,

but I tell you as soon as
a decision's been made

you'll be the first one I let know.

- [Jimbo] Okay, be careful.

- Got that, big sky,
echo whisky Victor.

- Someone was with him.

- Am I still on track for Warren?

Are you gonna tell me what's going on

because from where I sit
you don't look too good.

- Just shut up and get me there.

- Well I tell you

as soon as I land this plane,

I'm gonna call the cops.

- You just do what you have to do.

- All right, good.

Long as we understand each other.

You're the one with the gun.

- Jimbo, I don't suppose
you need a hand

escorting the does plane, do ya?

- What are you offering?

- Have you seen all the
food and grub down there?

Eight pissed women,

you are gonna need expert help.

- You take the does.

I'll stay here and wait for Chris.

- Yes, yes.

It's hunting season.

(Tense music)

- Yeah, this looks okay.

Can you pick me up from
here Sunday evening?

- You're kidding?

- Go.

Take off now, go.

- What?

- Get me out of here, please.

(Tense music)

- Why am I doing this?

All right, sit down.

(Ominous music)

(Sirens blaring)

(Ominous music)

(Gunshots firing)

(Glass shattering)

(Gunshots firing)

(Screaming)

(Alarms blaring)

(Gunshots firing)

What the hell's going on?

- You don't need to know.

- What do you mean I
don't need to know?

I just got shot at.

- Just keep flying.

- Oh, if you notice
that's what I'm doing.

- Good.

So just shut up and
mind your own business.

- All right, that's it, that's it,

I've had a gut full of this.

I'm taking this plane back to dubbo.

I'm gonna land it.

- Just keep going.

- Oh yeah?

What are you gonna do, shoot the pilot?

- [Shay] Can I get you something?

- No thanks.

- Great way to spend Saturday,

sitting around waiting
for the phone to ring.

- Well like, you'd know.

- I don't care, I'm just a cab driver.

If you're running from the law,

it's got nothing to do with me.

- You took off back there,

you committed yourself.

- Hey, it wasn't the color
of your eyes, fella.

It's called self preservation.

You are obviously very heavy duty.

Cops don't shoot at people
like that for no reason.

- They had a reason.

- Oh what'd you do, kill someone?

Why am I doing this?

I should've bolted out the back door

and left you lot to shoot it out.

- Yeah?

Well why didn't you?

- I'm still asking myself that.

- Thanks.

- Yeah.

So?

- I'm a cop.

(Laughs)

- Yeah, so am I.

- I'm due to testify at
the royal commission

into police corruption on Monday

if I live that long.

- [Chris] Big sky, this
is echo whisky Victor.

- Big sky base.

Chris, what's going on?

Are you okay?

- Yeah, I'm fine.

Are you alone?

- Not exactly.

- [Chris] The cops there?

- That's a negative.

There's just some waiting customers.

They're restless and
need somewhere to go.

- Thanks for that, jimbo.

One thing,

can you call Robbie, tell
her I'll be late home?

Don't tell her anything else.

Tell her to stay at her
mom's, not at home.

- Okay, I'll tell her.

- Thanks,

echo whisky Victor.

- Big sky base.

- [Detective] We'll stay right here

till we know where he's heading.

- The cops are there.

He said there were people
there that were restless.

Know what that means?

- No.

- It's a line from a pub.

And guess who's restless?

The riot squad, old sir,

they've got you surrounded.

(Phone ringing)

- [Jimbo] Robbie.

- Yes?

- [Jimbo] It's jimbo.

- Oh, jimbo, hi, how are you?

- Yeah I'm fine.

Listen, I've got a message from Chris.

- Oh yeah, where's he got to this time?

- [Jimbo] He's okay, just
held up a bit, that's all.

- Is everything all right?

- Yeah sure.

Look, he just wanted me to let you know

he'd be late home.

- Oh, did he say how late?

- [Jimbo] No, but he
said not to stay there,

to go to your mom's.

- No, that'll be okay.

- Is everything all right?

- [Robbie] Yeah, it's fine.

- [Jimbo] Good.

Okay, I'll see you around.

- See ya, jimbo.

- [Jimbo] Bye.

(Ominous music)

- [Shay] I'll never get
home at this rate.

They say the taxi was on
approach 10 minutes ago.

- Stick around for the
Doe's joy flight.

You're a Doe.

- Stuck on a plane with a
group of half pissed girls

and fruit flies?

I don't think so.

- Yeah, sounds like absolute hell.

(Girls laughing and screaming)

- Oh here we go.

- [Girls] Surprise!

- We're going on a joy flight.

- I'd rather die.

- Suzie.
- I hate flying.

- Drugs, girls, gambling houses,

have you got any idea

what it's like to buy a brand
new Mercedes with cash?

- Can't say as I have.

- Anyway,

my wife saw the money I
was throwing around.

We fought about it for years

but I didn't listen to her.

I mean why would you?

- Maybe she was right.

Didn't you ever stop to ask yourself

what you were doing?

- By then it was too late.

I mean you start out doing
a favor for a mate,

he does one for you

and before you know it,
you're in it up to your neck.

And you can't walk away,
you know too much.

So anyway, Jackie went,

took the kids.

And I was there in this big
house with all this money

and I realized I had nothing.

So now I'm gonna fix it.

I can bring the whole thing down.

But the guys are senior
now, very senior.

They've got a lot to lose.

I've just got to stay alive
till 10 o'clock Monday morning.

After that, I just,

I don't care.

- Oh, poor Scotty,

didn't get his plane
full of pissed women.

- I offered to help man,

it was the least I could do.

- Oh, your left hand.

- Be a shame to waste it.

Hey, why don't we give Lexi a call

see what she's doing?

Huh?

(Laughing)

- We're gonna have to land soon.

- Where is everyone?

I'm ready.

- [Female] Are you sure you won't Ralf?

- Who cares?

You only live once

and you only get married once.

Are you the pilot?

- Yeah.

- Well, let's go then.

I'm not walking down that aisle

until I have proof that I can fly.

- Uh, not a good idea.

- Why not?

- Everything you've ever heard
about flying, all true,

you'd be safer sticking
a fork in a powerpoint.

- True.

- Don't care.

- We lose a plane a week,

especially in these conditions.

- But we've paid.

It took us a month to
get the money together.

Please?

- Pretty please?

- Hang on.

Yeah?

- Are you crazy?

We can't fly,

we're way over the limit.

- Yeah, I know that but...

- Please?

- No.

- Jimbo, you're sober.

- I've got to stay by the
radio and wait for Chris.

- Yeah, I...

(Knocking)

I know but we can't let
them down, can we mate?

- You don't know how
much I appreciate this.

- Not a problem.

- [Jimbo] I'll carry
this out but that's it.

- You've got to fly us.

You're the only one who
hasn't been drinking.

- No, I can't.

I've got to get back to the radio.

- We're all gonna die.

- [Neil] Where the hell are we?

- We're about halfway
between collarenebri

and the black stump,

the old black (Mumbles) Strip.

If he's still alive, he'd be about 100.

Here's your share.

I really got to get back to the city.

Got a problem back there.

- Oh my god, Chris.

No, I've got to go.

Crawl back there.

Be back soon.

I'll be back.

I've got to go.

(Engine revving)

- [Chris] Big sky, this
is echo whisky Victor.

Are you there, jimbo?

- [Jimbo] Chris, do you still
have your cargo with you?

- No, I dropped him off.

- Where?

- Chris, where did you drop him?

- Mudgee, about half an hour ago.

- Did he inform you of his intentions?

- [Chris] Who are you?

- This is detective Taylor
of city central police.

Did he say anything about
where he was going?

- No, he didn't.

I didn't talk to him at all.

- Chris, our visitor
appears to have left.

- Thanks for that earlier, jimbo.

Where the hell have you been?

I've been calling.

- Sorry, I was, everything okay?

- [Chris] Yeah fine, how's Robbie?

- Fine.

- Okay, thanks.

Echo whisky Victor.

- Big sky base.

- Detective Taylor.

- Darren Taylor.

Yeah, that'd be right.

- [Chris] I'll stay
up here a bit longer,

give 'em time to clear off.

(Mysterious music)

- Well you should be all
right here till Monday.

- Appreciate it.

- And my bed's up here,
you can use that.

I've got somewhere else to go.

- All right.

- That's a bathroom.

That's the kitchen.

Help yourself to food though
there's not much of it.

- I'll be fine.

- Oh yeah.

If you want to get me
call me on that number.

You all right?

- Great.

Thanks.

(Tense music)

(Toy squeaking)

(Tense music)

(Grunting)

- Robbie, Robbie,
Robbie, it's me, Chris.

- Oh Chris, sorry, I
thought it was him.

- I'm sorry.

I didn't mean to frighten you.

(Mysterious music)

That's better.

- So where have you been
till three in the morning?

- Are we really?

I'll tell you later.

- Better get some sleep.

- Rob.

- Can I cuddle?

- It's okay.

I don't think he'll be back.

- I know.

I just couldn't believe
I was stupid enough

to get myself in the situation
in the first place.

- How could you?

Aa55 (Mumbles)?

- I don't know,

desperation, loneliness.

- I didn't realize you
were that lonely.

- Chris, I work, I look after the kids.

I haven't got time to meet anyone.

Half the time, I haven't
even got the energy.

- Well I don't mind.

- What?

- Being here.

- I don't mind either.

Actually...

(Gentle music)

- Where are you going?

- It's time to get up.

- You're not going anywhere.

- You sure you don't want some coffee?

- No, just you.

- Mommy!

Hi mom.

- [Kids] Dad, dad!

- Hi, where did you two come from?

- What are you doing here?

- Daddy's just staying for a night.

- Cool.

- Mom.

- Hello Robbie.

Hello Christopher, nice to see you.

- Hi Patricia.

- I brought you some breakfast.

Thought you might like a treat.

Looks like you've already had one.

- Mom.

- [Patricia] I'll leave you to it.

- No stay, please.

- No, I've got to go darling, really.

I'll see you all later.

Bye kids.

- [Kids] Bye grandma.

Bye. - Bye grandma.

- I might get breakfast happening.

- Hey.

- Hey, come back.

- Come on.
- Come on.

- Oh what the hell?

- Are you coming back?

- Yeah, I've just got to
get to my other clients.

- Can we come?

- Uh, not this time.

I'll tell you what,

tell mom to take some
steaks out of the fridge

and we'll have a barby.

- Cool.

- Good man.

See ya. - Bye.

- Bye.
- See you later.

- Bye.

- Mr. manning.

- Yeah?

- Detective Taylor and Harrison.

Spoke to you last night.

We've been waiting for you.

- [Chris] What can I do for you?

- Just back from mudgee, are we?

- [Chris] You were there too, eh?

- There was no record of you
landing there last night.

- Well, I can't be responsible
for yayasi's bookkeeping.

I dropped the bike off,

slept the night in the plane,

come back, and I'm tired.

Sorry I can't help you.

- Mind if we have a
look around, do you?

- Well, do you think he's here?

- [Detective] Why not?

- [Chris] Well why would I hide a bloke

who got me shot at?

Told you, I dropped him off.

Hey, aren't you blokes

supposed to have a search
warrant or something?

- You invited us in, Mr.
manning, don't you remember?

- Nothing.

- You better be careful, Mr.
manning, very careful.

You got on the wrong side
of the wrong people.

- All right, where are you?

- Thank god.

I couldn't have held on much longer.

I'm gone.

You just made yourself an enemy.

I'd watch my back if I were you.

- Thanks.

- Dad.

- Yeah?

- Are you and mom
getting married again?

- Shh...

We'll just see what happens.

- Out like a light.

She's exhausted.

She's not the only one.

- Perhaps we should all
have a little lie down.

- Chris.

- I like being a family again.

- We're always a family.

- I've missed you, Robbie.

- Chris, I don't want you
to think (Explosion)

(Ominous music) (Car tires screeching)

- Well, there's got to be some way

you can find out who it was.

- Forensics'll get
onto it straight away

but the fire will more than likely

have destroyed any evidence.

- He's a chemical engineer.

He won't leave me alone.

Who else would it be?

- [Officer] Is there anybody
else you can think of?

- The point is we could've been killed

and I want to know what
you're gonna do about it.

- Everything we possibly can

but unless we can find something,

there's not much more we can go on.

I'm sorry.

- So in the meantime,

my family's in danger.

- Well, we'll keep an eye on the house.

We'll do the best we can.

- Thank you.

I'm sure they're doing their best.

- Yeah.

I'm gonna get some
clothes from my place.

Take me about a week
to organize a renter.

- Chris.

What are you saying?

- Well I'm not gonna leave you alone.

- Chris, you're not moving back in.

Be realistic, please.

- Can you honestly say
after the past few days

that you don't love me?

- No, I still love you.

- Well I don't get it.

- I loved you when we broke up.

Chris, we don't work well together,

you know that.

- What do you mean?

What about last night?

- Look, I needed the
comfort, the closeness

and it was wonderful.

But it doesn't mean
anything more than that.

Don't you remember what it was like,

the fights, the silences, the affairs?

- Look, that was in the past.

That won't happen again.

- Six months, a year,
it'll all start up again.

- No, it won't, it won't.

I'm a different person.

- Chris, Chris, I love
what we have now.

You're my best friend.

You weren't that when
you were my husband.

I'm not gonna risk losing that.

- Hi.

I wasn't expecting you.

- Neither was I.

- I hope you don't mind.

- Go for it.

- Don't suppose you brought any food?

- That's a good start.

- [Chris] It was hot love

and then we got married.

- [Neil] That's for the parents.

- Exactly.

But you know what,

when I saw her pregnant with Jack,

it changed her.

There was something
different about her.

- So,

suddenly the most important thing

is looking after him.

- That's right.

You go sort of primal.

I remember walking down the street

and nudging people out of the way

just so she wouldn't get bumped.

- So what happened?

- I blew it.

- Well you're an idiot.

- Yeah I know.

What about you?

Can you get her back
after this is over?

- No.

She's got this guy.

- That was quick.

- No, they were friends for awhile.

She used to cry on his shoulder.

I watched it happening.

- Well you're an idiot.

- Yeah.

They're getting married.

- Another family, another
start, so I guess.

I just want to be part of it,

that's all I want.

- We had this family album,

Jackie took all the photos
out and sent them to me.

She'd used scissors to cut me out.

There they were,

her and the kids smiling out,

with her arms around
this blank empty space.

- That was you?

- That was me,

the blank

- empty space.

(Alarm beeping)

(Ominous music)

Neil, Neil,

there's a couple of d's
coming in the front door.

- Good.

(Knocking on door)

Richard.

- Neil.

- Thanks for coming.

Kenan.

- This the guy?

- Yeah, this is him.

Chris manning, Richard
Dwyer, kenan lynch.

- I hear it takes you all of 20 seconds

to get a plane off the ground?

- Only when I'm getting shot at.

- These blokes are escorting
me to court this morning.

- Ah, the good guys.

- We'd better go.

- Right.

Well this is it.

Thanks

for everything.

I think if it hadn't been you,

I'd be on the tarmac at
Warren with a sheet over me.

- Yeah, well don't get too misty.

I thought you were at least a hitman.

- Whatever.

Appreciate it.

By the way,

the situation with
Robbie and that bloke,

I'll have a talk to
some friends with a,

a better grasp of the
law then your coppers.

I don't think he'll bother her again.

- Thanks.

(Gentle music)

- Morning.

- Recovered from Saturday night?

- Never felt better.

- You didn't catch food

- The hangover from hell.

- How was your weekend?

- I've got a sore bottom
from horse riding.

So what's been going on here?

Anything happen?

- Well, I thought something

but it didn't.

- What do you mean?

- Well I went on a journey.

- And you're back now?

- Yeah.

I'm back.
