Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990–2000): Season 7, Episode 11 - If I Had a Hammer - full transcript

During an argument with Donna in the student union, David throws a tantrum and cuts his hand on a glass. He must see a psychiatrist after displaying hostile behavior toward the ER staff. Mel agrees with the doctor's recommendation that David be held 72 hours for observation. David is diagnosed with a mild form of manic depression. His mother comes to see him and advises him to moderate his behavior; he will not require medication if he seeks therapy and stops drinking. David thanks Donna for her support and they decide to get back together. Steve faces plagiarism charges; Professor Randall, who assumed control of the independent study course after returning to CU, recognized Brandon's writing. Randall still holds a vendetta against Brandon and brings collusion charges against him. Kelly's and Mark's plans for a romantic weekend getaway are foiled by a lost reservation. They finally secure a motel room, only to come down with food poisoning. The gang helps Willie build a house that his family will receive from Habitat for Humanity. Val displays construction skills as a result of working with her contractor father, but hints to Clare that she has few happy memories of her dad. Everyone eats Thanksgiving dinner inside the unfinished house.

This is an entirely different
venue of cheating, Walsh,

and as far as I'm
concerned, you are guilty

until proven innocent.

Now, if you'll excuse me...

Any word on Davey Boy?

Well, Donna says he's getting
help from a really good doctor.

Is he going to be out in
time for Thanksgiving?

They don't know;
it's too soon to tell.

Well, on our end,
ladies, we got to move it

if we want a roof
up in time for turkey.

Follow me.

What are we doing?

Quality control.

See, this is a level, and
we're going to make sure

that the window frame is plumb,

which it is.

We don't want the city
inspectors holding us up

with code violations.

How do you know
about this stuff?

My dad was a contractor.

Oh, really?

Yeah, the summer
before I moved here,

he had me work at one

of his construction sites.

Ten months later, we
had a shopping mall

and a movie theater
with red velvet seats and...

mahogany walls
and art deco trim.

Too bad he didn't
stick around to see it.

Why, what happened?

He blew his brains out.

I'm sorry.

It's okay.

It was a long time ago.

I know, it's just... I know
what it's like to lose a parent.

That's right, your mom.

Yeah.

But I have good memories,
and it sounds like you do, too.

A few.

Well?

Houston, we have a room.

Mm, good. Where?

Well, it's, uh, it's
just off the interstate.

It's a Best Nest motel.

Best Nest... that's my favorite.

I know, I know,
I'm spoiling you,

but that's just the
kind of guy I am.

Yes, you are.

Here, try this Lobster Newberg.

It's amazing.

Not until you try some caviar.

Come on, it's not meat,

it's not poultry, it's just...

Best Nest, eggs.

Do I see a pattern forming here?

Okay.

Hmm... not bad.

I told you.

Mom?

Mom?

Dr. Tate.

Dr. Tate.

Dr. Tate!

Donna.

Sheila.

Oh, I'm so glad you came.

I was in Palm Springs.

I came as soon as I
got Mel's message.

How is David?

Well, apparently
he's had a rough night,

but Dr. Tate feels it could
be the start of a breakthrough.

I feel so guilty.

I've passed this on to him.

No, Sheila, don't ever say that.

I never thought
that I'd be waiting

to see my son in
a place like this.

Sheila, listen to me.

You're here and
that's what counts,

and you know better
than anyone else

how to help David through this.

Yes.

Yes, you're right.

You look exhausted.

Why don't you go
home and get some rest?

I'm here.

I'll stay.

Are you sure? Yes.

Go on.

Oh, I'm glad you're here.

Thank you.

What are you doing?

I'm taking this
back up to my room,

out of harm's way.

Hey, Bran, I'm sorry
my bonehead play

dragged you into this.

Well, the thing is,

Randall isn't gonna let me out.

The charge is collusion,

and he's gonna make it stick.

I'll do whatever I... I don't
want to hear it, Steve.

You stole from me, man.

You took something that
was mine, that I crafted

and I created, and
you put your name on it.

Now everything that
I've worked towards

is about to be flushed.

What kind of friend
does that make you?

Oh, nice.

Nice.

Best Nest.

Nice.

Come here.

Come sit down.

Okay, now close your eyes.

Close your eyes.

Come on.

Okay, now just imagine we're in

our little bungalow
at Montecito Ranch...

with the rustic beam ceiling,

the soft lighting,

Chopin's nocturnes
wafting softly in our ears,

the flames flickering
in the fireplace.

Mark...

I'm getting so hot.

Me, too.

No, I'm burning up.

Yeah?

My stomach.

Butterflies?

Caviar.

Huh?

I'm gonna be sick.

Kel, are you okay?

Kelly?

Lobster Newburg,
caviar, champagne.

What is it, stomach flu?

No, no, it's got

to be food poisoning.

Are you sure?

I mean, that
restaurant was four-star.

All right, it's stomach flu.

I'm so sorry, Mark.
No, that's all right.

Don't worry. It's not like I...

planned this, you know?

Yeah, I know, I know.

Oh, God.

Oh, God, what?

It is food poisoning.

Can we open the drapes?

No.

Oh, they're so hideous.

You'd rather have
direct sunlight?

You were great last night.

So were you.

So sweet, so gentle.

Speak for yourself.

You were incredible.

I didn't have the legs
to make that last run

to the bathroom,
but you got me there.

And here we are.

Yeah, in Shangri-la.

Four-star.

The best laid plans, huh?

You know...

if we could make it to the car,

we could get back to Casa Walsh

in time for Thanksgiving.

Uh, doesn't that
usually involve food?

Yeah, you're right.

So, what do you want to do?

Maybe we should
just stay right here...

where we are.

Maybe so.

You know, you are
the nicest person

I've ever gotten sick with.

I was just gonna say
the same thing about you.

David?

Good morning.

You've got a visitor.

She's been waiting all night.

What are you doing here?

You didn't have to come.

You've always been there for me.

Uh, I'm-I'm...

I'm doing okay now.

I just, uh...

I was just a little messed up.

When I heard that you were here,

I was so scared
and worried, but...

you know, I'm beginning to think

that maybe it was a blessing

in disguise. Mom...

stop, please.

Look, I love you,

and I'd... I'd do
anything for you...

but please don't try
telling me I'm you, okay?

You're not me, David,

but you are my son,
and it's time for you

to listen to your
mother for a change.

Dr. Tate cataloged me already.

He says I'm a...

minor league manic-depressive.

That's... that's what he says.

What does he know, right?

You're right.

He doesn't know.

He's never been on the ride.

He's never had the
highs that we've had,

has he?

I guess not.

Fun, aren't they?

Yeah.

Incredible.

It's like, when
you're on the ride,

you can do no wrong.

I'm fearless.

Yeah... and blind.

Yeah.

I guess I hit bottom
in Las Vegas.

When the lows come...

they really swallow
you whole, don't they?

David, if you don't
have the highs,

you don't have the lows.

I don't want medication,
Mom. I don't need medication.

And Dr. Tate agrees with you,

but if you want to
get out of this place

and stay out of it,

you need to learn to
make better choices.

Like what?

Like being open to therapy.

Don't be so open to alcohol.

Do you want to spin out again?

Do you want to relive
these last few weeks?

No.

David, you have a choice.

I did it the hard way.

You don't have to.

It's up to you.

Okay.

I hear you.

Let's get you out of here.

Fork goes on the left,
small one on the outside.

The bigger one goes...

Who's got the wine?

We have some water
glasses around here?

Okay.

Oh, Willie, move those
glasses, will you, please?

Everyone, please sit down.

Whoa.

Sit down, pal.

Welcome home, Willie.

Hey, Willie.

God bless all of you.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Guys, can't you call a truce?

You're not gonna be
able to solve the problem

till next week at the
student conduct meeting.

It is Thanksgiving.

I guess you're right.

Happy Thanksgiving, Steve.

Happy Thanksgiving, Brandon.

David. Hey.

Oh, look who's here.

You guys, this is unbelievable.

Sil-bear.

How you feeling?

Better. Good.

Thanks for asking.

David, come sit over here.

What's up, Willie?

I still don't know
why you would want

to have anything to do with me.

David.

No, really.

Why do you hang in?

I mean, I've never
done anything for you.

That's not true.

You were my first kiss.

You were my first love.

Those things are priceless.

They'll stay with me always,

no matter which
way our lives go.

Well, I want you
to know one thing.

I'm not crazy.

Oh, yeah?

Well, then, what are you?

Crazier.

About you.

I love you, Donna.

I love you, too.

You know, this is just
like Thanksgiving dinner

at my place, only
without a roof.
