Beauty and the Beast (1987–1990): Season 2, Episode 8 - Labyrinths - full transcript

A young man gets lost in the tunnel world and he is found by the inhabitants. They're uncertain if they should let him go because they're not sure if he can be trusted to keep their secret. But when a search party comes looking for him, they decide to try to convince him to keep their world a secret.

This is where the wealthy
and the powerful rule.

It is her world,

a world apart from mine.

Her name... is Catherine.

From the moment I saw her,
she captured my heart

with her beauty,

her warmth and her courage.

I knew then, as I know now,

she would change my life...

forever.

He comes from a secret place,
far below the city streets,

hiding his face from strangers,

safe from hate and harm.

He brought me there
to save my life.

And now, wherever I go,
he is with me in spirit.

For we have a bond stronger
than friendship or love.

And although
we cannot be together,

we will never, ever be apart.

The tunnel is growing smaller.

It's now just four feet high.

There's a steel door
to your left.

The Gelfin will test
the door's strength.

Five.

The door will not open.

I send the Giant
to smash the door.

The Gelfin stands behind him

with Prince Brian.

You need a six to open
the door. Eight.

The Giant has dented the door
enough to see inside.

The Gelfin can enter.

The Gelfin uses his
extraordinary olfactory powers.

"I sense human life,"
he growls, hungrily.

Prince Brian rushes to the door.

He must get inside.

The room can be entered
with a sacrifice.

The Gelfin has sworn loyalty.

Prince Brian sacrifices
the Gelfin.

The Gelfin dies.

You may now
enter the room.

There is one side door.

A beautiful
woman cries for help.

It's Lady Catherine.

Prince Brian...

rushes to the side door.

The Giant follows.

Suddenly...

two Green Uglies
and a Dervish Robot

emerge from the
cracks in the walls.

The Robot yells, "Squash them,
cut out their eyes!"

Seven.

The Giant has a secret weapon--

a fire staff--

but will it be enough?

Prince Brian flings open
the door...

Dinner in five minutes, Brian.

The Green Ghoul, gaining
strength as he consumes

his devoted slave, yells...

"Dinner, Brian."

The serfs flee to the
safety of their hovels.

Want to play tomorrow?

Yeah, sure.

Hey, wait for me Stevie.

It's not Stevie;
it's Steven.

Steven?
Since when?

Since Lauren Campbell.

Shut up.
Hey, don't worry.

Everybody knows
you like her.
Great.

Tomorrow, 4:00.

Hey, did you get
a date with her yet?

Knock it off.

He fights with fearless courage.

His sword slashes at the Uglies,

driving them back over the
cliffs to their doom.

Dinner now.

I'm not going to say it again!

Yes, you will...

As he saves Lady Catherine from
the cave of darkness,

she proclaims for all to hear
that Prince Brian

is the most handsome, brave
and charming of men.

Dinner is at 6:00.

Sorry.

What were you doing?

Just playing a game.

You done your homework?

Yeah.

How's everything
at school?

Fine.

May I be excused?

Go ahead.

Thanks.

Brian?

Your mother wants you in Chicago
for Easter.

That's okay.

Thanks.

Thanks, Roger.

You're welcome.

Hi, Brian.

Hi, Miss Chandler.

This is Dr. Johnson's office.

Just calling to remind you

you're overdue
for a dental checkup.

I'll be happy to schedule at
your convenience.

Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Hi.
This is Judy.

Debbie and I thought we'd go out
for dinner and catch a movie.

Give me a call
if you want to come.

Thanks, anyway...

I was just thinking of you.

Catherine, I come
on an urgent mission.

What is it?

The children insist that you
come below tonight,

to Father's chamber.

Really?

What's the occasion?

Something of a miracle.

Tell me.

This year, there were several
children in the music classes

who were felt not to be ready to
perform at the Winterfest.

Some were simply
too inexperienced,

but others failed to show
true commitment to the music.

I think in order to prove to all
of us that we were

in grave error, these children
have joined together

to form their own
concert society.

That's wonderful.

Their first recital is tonight.

They say you
must be there.

Well then,
I wouldn't miss it.

You hold a very special place
in their hearts.

They're like
a part of my family.

Until tonight.

Listen, we've been over
this again and again.

You said you'd take him
for Easter.

I've already made arrangements
to go away.

No, I can't change them!

I'm not changing my plans
because you woke up this morning

and changed your mind!

What the hell do you think
"joint custody" means?!

Frankly, damn it,
I need a break.

Now listen, I've
made my plans.

He'll be out there for
Easter, and that's it.

No!

Wow...

Big deal.

It's just
another basement.

You got us
down here
for this?

You ain't seen
nothing yet.

Follow me.

Feast your eyes.

I wonder
where they go.

Oh, there's only one
way to find out.

I-I don't
know.

I don't...
I don't know
about this.

Let's see
how far it goes.

Yeah.

It's too
dangerous.

You guys
are crazy!

It looks like
it could collapse.

We'd be trapped
down here.

I'm getting
out of here.

Guys, it's just starting
to get interesting.

Hey, I've got plans
for my life.

Being buried alive
is not one of them.

Suit yourself.

You're going
in there?

Yeah.

Well, you
shouldn't
go alone.

I'll tell you all about it.

Brilliant idea, Prince Brian.

Now you can go anywhere.

They're really good.

Mm-hmm.

We offered our help, but
they absolutely refused.

They were so determined
to prove themselves to us.

Look at their faces.

They know
they've done it.

Yes.

They've succeeded in
humbling their elders.

And besides the music,
what could be sweeter?

You know children?

I used to be one.

Yes, but...

you remember.

More and more.

Fearlessly,

the intrepid explorer
continues his search.

10:30.

I'll live to fight another day.

Oh!

Help! Somebody, help me!

Help!

Please, somebody,
help...

Oh, help me.

Get me out
of here. Please.

Who are you?

Please, let me out of here.

What are you doing here?

Nothing. I got lost.

I promise, that's it.

Please let me go.

Prisoner now.

The ropes--
they're hurting my leg.

Oh, my leg,
my leg. Please?

Please let me out
of here.

My leg-- it hurts,
and the ropes!

Please. Oh...

Oh, thank you.

I'll do anything you want,
all right?

But just let me go,
all right?

I didn't mean to be here.

Can't. Can't do that.

Ow!

Stop! Can't go there!

Danger!

I told you we're
gonna miss it.

Don't be
afraid.

Who are you?

Brian.

How did you get in here?

- Tunnel.
- In a tunnel.

What do
you want?
Are you alone?

Yes.
Nothing.

Brian?

Oh, Miss Chandler!

Catherine,

you know this boy?

Yes. He lives
in my building.

I just followed
her, that's it.

You followed me?!

Sort of.

Well, what do you mean, sort of?

I followed her
into the tunnels.

I came back later to see where
she went, but I got lost.

I'm sorry.

I don't know

how I could have
been so careless.

This boy must
be secluded.

Vincent.

Catherine.
Come with me.

Where are you taking me?

No one will harm you.

Summon the others.

I didn't mean
to do anything bad.

I'm sure you didn't.

What's gonna happen to me?

What are they gonna do?

I don't know, Brian.

Who are they?

Friends.

Then make them let me go.

I wish it were that simple.

I'm as much to blame as you.

I just wanted
to see what was in the tunnels.

I want to go home.

Please.

Try not to worry, Brian.

I'm sure you'll be home soon.

How could someone get
so far and not be seen?

Past our sentries?

Lucky Mouse caught him.

Somehow, the lookout person
in the upper tunnel

had been left unguarded.

It wasn't me.

I was on duty in the morning!

Then who was
supposed to be there?

We face a much more urgent
problem than placing blame.

Yes.

What can we do with this boy?

We can blindfold him

and take him out
before he sees any more.

He's already
seen too much.

We'd have to seal up and
reroute all the entrances.

That's an almost
impossible undertaking.

If he told the secret,
who would believe him?

We could temporarily
seal up the entrance

under Catherine's building.

The boy was lost.

Even if he tried,
could he find his way back?

Before we send
him back up,

we should scare the
daylights out of him

so he knows it's serious.

He knows it's serious.

Perhaps, rather than concealing
the truth from this boy,

we should tell him
who we are, how we live.

I don't know about that.

Maybe let him stay.

He has a home-- above.

If, in the end,
we have no choice

but to send him home and pray
that he keeps our secret,

he must be made
to know its importance.

A secret that any boy of his age
would want to tell.

How can we expect this child
to be trusted with our secret?

I think this boy
has a good heart...

...and a conscience.

If he understands
that people's lives

depend on his
keeping this secret,

I believe he can be trusted.

I'd like a chance to try.

Yes, I committed a great
crime in the world above.

Then you're in hiding?

No, no one's
looking for me.

My crime was
that I grew old.

You see, in the world above,

people don't want to look at me,
an old man,

this unpleasant reminder
of their future.

I was to be cast away,

hidden from the eyes
of the young,

who want to believe
they will live forever.

To the world above,
I had lived too long,

but here,

below, I have not
lived long enough.

So why am I here?

To make memories,

so that the last moments of my
life may be as full of warmth

and love, as were the very
first moments of my life.

Home. Children.

I help the children grow.

I nurse them when they're sick.

I teach them.

I love all of them
as if each were my own.

I lost my own.

To lose a child
is to lose everything.

And it was here
I found family again.

The children are safe here.

This is our safe place.

I tell them it will be here
for them always.

Trust, continuity...

A tradition of work and honor

passed down from
my father to me.

A system of communication,

a way in which we
can always be connected.

I continue what he
began so many years ago,

so that those that come after
will remember him,

long after I'm gone.

I was born here.

This is my birthright
and my legacy.

My life above nothing but
disappointments and failures.

Nothing good ever happened

until I found this
home beneath the city.

Down here I do what I do best.

I cook, feed people.

And they appreciate me.

I'm needed.

It's a new beginning.

A chance.

Hope.

I help everyone.

Everyone helps me.

I go; they miss me.

I come back; they're glad.

I'm never alone.

Before, I was no one.

Now, I am me.

I am Mouse.

When my mother died,
I went to the orphanage,

and people came to adopt us.

We'd all line up, and I'd smile
when they came by,

hoping they'd choose me,
but they never did.

You know, but everyone
wants me here.

I don't cry anymore.

I got chosen.

When I left the world above,

I was... disillusioned...

heartbroken.

I'd lost my faith.

Here it was I learned
to listen to my heart,

to face my old enemies
and heal my wounds.

Here I learned
to believe again.

Hopes and dreams created
this fragile world.

Pride and vigilance
maintain it,

and it survives only because
it is separate and apart.

It is a refuge where
the disillusioned

regain their vision,

the lost become found,

where each one of us can
explore the best of our being,

the best of what it means to be
human... and to be... alive.

My very existence lies here
within these tunnels.

It is my salvation.

I couldn't exist elsewhere.

Without this place,
there is nothing for me.

You must never,
as long as you live,

reveal what you have
seen here to anyone.

To do so would mean the end
of life for all of us,

the end of our world.

You bear the weight
of a great responsibility,

but it is also
a great privilege.

You will always have
a safe place here with us

should you need it,

but now you must go back
to the world above,

carrying our secret with you,
forever in silence.

You can go on alone
from here.

Our secret is now
in your hands.

Please keep it safe for us.

I will.

Brian!

Yeah.

Do you know what time it is?

No.

It's 2:00 in the morning,
young man,

and I want an explanation
right now.

Uh, I just went
to a movie with Derek.

You know, we stayed late.

Well, I called Derek.

He's been home all night.
Try again.

Damn it!
I have had it with you!

Now where have you been?

I've been waiting
up for you

and I have an important
meeting in six hours.

Now you'd better start talking

or I'm shipping you
to your mother tonight.

I don't have to stay
with either one of you.

Oh, you don't, huh?

I have somewhere to go.

Oh, yeah,
where's that?

A place.

A place... a place...
What place?

I'd really like to know.

Damn it, Brian,
you'd better get out
of your fantasy world.

This is where you live,
right here.

Right here with me.

And as long as you do,
you follow my rules.

Do you understand that?

Yes, sir.

Okay, get to your room
and get to bed.

I do not have any more time
for this.

Paul... what's going on?

You got me.

As far as I can tell, some kid
from the building is missing.

I think they're down in
the basement looking for him.

Yes, sir, on each floor.

We'll need four more
men over there, Bob.

Tell Stan to move
everything back a block.

Let's get some lights
down there.

Go up and get me the map
for the subway corridor.

And tell them not
to do any drilling

until we find out
what we're doing.

Please.

Nothing yet.

There's a passage
below the subway system.

We're sending a team
down there now.

Thank you very much.

Vincent, thank God.

What is it, Catherine?

Is Brian with you?
No.

He's missing.

They've sent a search team

to look below the subways.

They're going to search
in the tunnels.

Hurry... please.

Heard crying.

Why?

I don't know.

Everything, I guess.

You came back.

In your world,
everything is so different.

People care, they listen.

They don't just give orders
and make rules.

We have rules here, too.

Break the rules,
get in trouble.

I know.

Me, too.

Did you tell secret?

I wanted to scream it so loud

that my dad would never yell
at me again.

But I didn't.

I had to leave.

It scared me that I wanted
to tell, even just for a second.

Hard to keep secrets.

First time's the hardest.

Gets easier... gets better.

Maybe.

They don't know me.

My father doesn't
care about me.

Neither does my mother.

I don't believe
that's true.

Everything is different now.

He hardly talks to me
except when he's yelling.

His life must be
in great torment.

And so is mine.

Do you remember a time

when all was right
with your family?

When you could feel their
love for each other

and for you?

Yes.

Try to imagine
the sadness

and the terror your father
is feeling having lost that.

There's nothing I can do
about that.

There is.

Understand him.

Forgive him.

Love him.

There's great
strength in that.

But to do those things, you
have to go back and face him.

You have to be braver than
you've ever been before.

I know.

Part of me just wishes
I could stay here.

This is not a place to hide.

This is a place
to gain strength.

You carry that now within you.

Hold it...
close, deep inside your self.

I will.

I'll miss everybody.

Especially you.

You have friends below always.

Thank you.

Your heart led you here.

Let it show you the way
when you go home.

I'll try.

All right.

Got a whole list
of names here.

Hey, kids, kids,

kids, here.

All right,
take-take it easy.

All right, open it up,
clear the way.

Clear the way.
They've got him.

There he is.

They got him.
Take it easy.

Paramedics.

Brian.

Come on, fellas,
stand back, everybody back.

Prince Brian shields
Lady Catherine

and faces the Dervish Robot,
sword drawn.

Does the sword
have power?

Three.

The sword is made out of paper.

Prince Brian has
no defense.

The Giant aims his fire staff
at the Dervish Robot.

Four.

The fire staff has no fuel.

They're doomed.

Can't a bargain be struck?

Vincent the Protector

rescues Lady Catherine
and keeps her safe from harm.

Vincent?

Who's Vincent?

Is he a new character?

No, he's been here
the whole time.

I-I guess I just forgot
to tell you guys.

Well, this game's over.

I was getting kind of
tired of it anyway.

You ever going to tell us
what happened?

Huh?

You know, in the tunnels.

What was it like?

What was down there?

Just bricks, stones.

Nothing much.

I got this
great idea.

We build this
multi-level maze.

And it all takes place in the
city skyscrapers at night.

Skyscrapers at night.

I like that.

I like that a lot.

Yeah, me, too.

He'll keep the secret.

There may be times his
strength is tested.

Some secrets give us
strength.

Yes, and comfort.

I know what Brian was looking
for when he followed me down.

It was the same thing I looked
for for so many years.

What, Catherine?

A family.

You find family wherever
people love each other.
