Bear Grylls: Survival School (2016–…): Season 1, Episode 8 - Episode #1.8 - full transcript

Bear demonstrates the tricky technique of commando crawling along a rope.

Many of the activities

in the following program
are extremely dangerous

and must be carried
outunder expert supervision.

Please don't attempt
any of them yourself.

Previously on Bear
Grylls Survival School,

my recruits had a day out to
thecoast, but it was no holiday.

Pull hard.

Pull hard, Tyler.

They're goal
wasto cross treacherous cliffs

and reach a tiny islandbattered
by powerful waves.

It's going to be so cold.

The high tide
was potentially deadly.

We're going to
get you out of here.

But six intrepid adventurers

made it to the island.

On the ocean survival
menu, fish eyes.

Oh, it's disgusting.

Along with seaweed and lipids.

Absolutely disgusting.

He's happy.

Happy.

After a hard day, there

was a real buzz
around camp, but yet

again the survivors
showed they're

still messy teenagers at heart.

It's all over the place.

It's just outrageous.

I'm Bear Grylls.

When I was growing up,
allof this was my playground.

I want to find out if
kids today are going

to take the abandon
of their mobile phones

and survive for two
weeksout here in the wild.

Ooh.

Ah.

Watch out.

Ah!

Ooh!

I really don't want to do this.

Dig deep.

Feel it strong.

Welcome to Bear Grylls
Survival School.

OK.

Wake up!

Coming up,
payback time for the boys.

Wake up!

And can anyone avoid the drop.

Come on.

Ah!

It's so hard.

All right.
Let's go!

We've got one minute.

One minute!

Come on.

The team are up early

for an extra tough PT session.

They're in big
trouble with leader,

Scott and Sarah
over the state they

left their camp in last night.

Jogging on the spot.

Honestly, it's just outrageous.

Kit all over the place, rubbish,
mugs all over the place.

Food.

Socks.

You're out here on the
bank of survival school

trying to teach you
how to be adventurous.

Look after your person,
andmove fast, be like Bear,

and it gets worse and worse.

I think it was better
a few nights before,

so we sunk down a lot.

Dusty needs to be [inaudible].

Let's go.

Lead on.

Come on, guys.

You're walking!

Let's go.

My instructorsare
at their wits' end

with how disorganized
the group are.

Since the very start
of survival school,

the guys have littered
kit around camp

like a typical
teenager's bedroom.

Unbelievable.

But as we kept telling them,

losing gear can be a
matter of life and death

in a real survival situation.

Without your hat or gloveson
a freezing mountain,

you could quickly end up
withhypothermia or frostbite.

And mistreat your boots
in extreme environments?

Well, you're going nowhere fast.

Let's go, guys.

You haven't finished yet.

So last night, they really

let themselves down badly.

I guess you're thinking
thisis just a load of rubbish.

At this stage now,
the survivalschool should be much slicker.

Up you go.

I don't mind the PT itself.

It was a bit more tiring
than usual, I think,

because Scott and
Sarah were angry at us.

I think last night and thismorning
just falling to pieces.

But we're working on it.

We're getting better.

I hope the teamhave
finally got the message.

Time to move on and
start today's challenge,

and it's a tough one.

They'll have to crawlacross
this 20-meter rope,

hopefully, without
ending up in lake.

Now, watch your
footing on this path.

It is all very loose.

OK, I can tell you
this for nothing.

This is going to be hard
work for these guys.

OK, great.

Just gather around here.

If you do exactly as you'retold,
you won't get wet here.

Who knows what this is called?

A rope.

Good.

It is, indeed, a rope.

But this is called
a Tyrolean traverse.

It's what mountain guys
would use in the Alps

and in the mountains
for getting supplies

and people across chasms,
across gorges, across rivers.

It's about technique,
balance, pacing yourself.

This is a long way.

Key to doing this isgoing
on top of the rope.

Rather than being underneath
the rope where it's all

under your arms,
we're goingto put our weight on top

of the rope so then wecan
balance, we can rest,

we can get our breath back.

The first thing we're goingto
do is get on top of it.

We're going to lie like
thisand just find our balance.

OK? Now, what are you noticing?

Your foot.

OK.

One leg hooked
over the top there.

All right?

That's what I'm pushing with.

OK?

I'm pushing with my leg.

I'm not pulling with my arms.

This other one here
is for balance.

It's counter balance.

So if I pull this way,
I'm balancing like that.

You want to try keep your chest,
keep your weight off your chest

because when all your weightis
on your chest like this,

it's hard to breathe,
and you end up like this.

And that's when you
get out of breath.

When you get out ofbreath,
you make mistakes.

Try and keep your
chest up a little bit.

One leg balancing.

And again, we pace ourselves.

So now I'm out over the water.

Now, what happens,
thoughif you fall off like this?

Or even worse,
what happensif you fall off like this?

Now you might think
you're in trouble,

but there's a
technique for doing it.

The first is get your legs up.

Then we get one armpit.

Then we get the other armpit.

So now we're like this.

Right armpit.

Left armpit.

Now, watch.

Left leg comes up, throws
itselfdown, and you roll on top.

I'm not out of breath.

I'm fine.

Technique.

OK.
Simple?

- No.
- Yeah.

You'll be fine.

I'm nervous about it
becauseBear made it look easy.

I don't really want
to be falling in that

because it looks pretty cold.

It looks like you reallyhave
to keep your balance,

and very tricky to do that.

Push with this leg.

This one is the one to work.

Hold on, Ciaran.

Ciaran inchesout
above the freezing water.

With a grueling crawl
of more than 20 meters

to get to safety,
this isnot for the faint hearted.

Now comes the really tricky bit.

Now is the time
ifyou want to go half regain

right there, what do you think?

Feet back up.

Again.

And again.

Throw your head back.

Put your feet up.

Go, Ciaran.

Get your leg up, Ciaran.

The longer he hangs on,

the weaker his arms will become.

Get your leg up, if you can.

Bring it up.

Bring it up.

Come on, Ciaran.

OK, stay on the rope.

Stay on the rope.

OK, swing your legs up.

Use your core.

Big strong pull up,
and get your leg up.

One, two, three.

Here we go.

And get a up foot up.

Go.
Go.

Go.

Even if you got to swing. That's fine.

Yeah.

Well done.

It takes incredible
strengthto hold on like this.

Swing.

And swing.

And one more big one.

And go.

I can't
believehe's hung on this long.

What great determination.

Can you step up a bit.

Try and do a bit of a pull-up.

Pull up on three.
One--

Big swing.

--two, three.

And a swing up.

My arms are dead.

Sometimes
it's good for one to go

and kind of relieves
thepressure on everyone else.

And I've been there
are a ton of times.

You're not always going tomake
it, but he tried his best.

That's the key that
he gave it his all.

Good for you, Ciaran.

Well done, my friend.

My foot touched it,
and I thought I was up,

but my arms just
gave away in the end.

So it's that to fall in.

It was interesting, challenging,
and fun all at the same time.

Get this arm right arm over top,

and this one comes through here.

Having watched Ciaran fall,

and he was one of
the strongest boys,

Scott demos a regain again
toreassure a reluctant Bailey.

Yes, you are.

No. 'Cause I fall.

You won't fall.

It's freezing anyway.

This rope challenge is daunting,

but it says much about
technique and strength.

You are.

Strong as a bull.

Give us a bit of a pose now.

Gives us double
arms, double arms.

Exactly.
You're on.

Come on in.

First task is to get

himself balanced on the rope.

So you need to get there.

Ah!

But it's an eye-watering start.

Come on again.

What did I just say to you?

Where are your leg ins.

Put your chest on there.

Put your chest down.

But he's having a little trouble

positioning his crown jewels.

Just need to get your
hips onto the rope.

Hips on.
- My hips.

Where those are?

Here.
These things.

What do I do with that?

You twist this, so
this has to be here.

No, I'm going to breathe again.

Whoa.

OK, here we go again.

Choose a side.

Choose a side.

Come through.

One minute in
andBailey has still not organized

himself on the rope.

Let go of this leg.

I'm just happy, Abigail.

At least Melvin.

- I'm not breathing.
- Squeeze in.

You're out of balance.

I can see if I let go,
you'regoing to turn and spin.

Feet down.

Bailey, in
this sort of situation,

you just have to grityour
teeth and go for it.

Let's go again.

Good boy.

For Wales.

Bailey, just listen to Scott.

Yeah, every time I do it poorly.

It's hilarious.

I'm going let go
of you in a minute.

Your balance doesn't
seemto good to me, Bailey.

- But where do feet go?
- You'll be OK.

Go on.

Finally,
afterthree and a half minutes,

Bailey is on the move.

Try the half regain.

No, I'm not trying
the half regain.

Bailey, if I was you,

I'd get off this rope
asquickly as possible by one

way or the other.

One way or another,

we're going to find ya.

Stop.

I hate that song.

To his credit and great relief,

he drags himself
all the way across.

Keep coming.

I did that for Wales.

That was very painful.

I'm really excited.

I just don't want
to go in the water.

It looks really cold.

It's not just about keeping dry.

With the girls and boysteams
locked at three all,

everyone wants to impressthe
leaders with their style

and confidence.

Go.

It was so hard.

I got not even halfway.

You regain back rowstyle,
could be 12 points.

If I do a half regain,
we've won the point.

This is whatl like to
see, confidence,

and Az has plenty of it.

Left leg up.

Left leg.

Good.

Get both arms through that rope. And again.

And again.

But after a stellar effort,

Az is beginning to
run out of energy.

Can I just do the geography?

Bye-bye.

When I went upside down off
therope, I just couldn't do it.

I'm going to get up there,
half regain thing, I hope.

Hopefully, I can.

So far, no one has successfully

managed to get back
up on the rope,

and Adam could struggled
more than most.

He was born with
a condition that

gave him a very curved spine.

The last operation I had,
theyput a titanium rod in my back,

and they're hoping that
thatgradually straightens up.

Throughout survival school,

he's been on a mission
to prove he can

more than match his teammates.

People treat me likel
need to be wrapped up.

But you can see I can
doeverything everyone else can.

This challenge
puts particular strain

on the upper body,
but Adam is not one

to let anything get in his way.

Hey, Adam, James Bond,
let's do it smooth.

This guy is absolutely amazing.

He's just gone with it.

Every time he's cold, wet,
hungry, I've asked him,

how are you, Adam?

I'm fine.

He's just absolute legend.

He's going great guns

and I wouldn't think
any the less of him

if he avoided the
testing regain.

All I have to do
is get the leg up.

But it looks
likehe's going to give it a go.

Adam, get a hold of the hands.

Hold it upside down.

Keep both feet on.

OK, here we go.

Upside down.

Grip hold with both feet.

Here we go.
Good.

Now left leg is going
to come off completely.

Left leg.
Good.

Right armpit right up.

It will take a huge
amount of strength

to get out of this position.

Here we go.

Pull head up!

Yes!
And again.

Let's go.

That left leg has got to
go up high first, Adam.

The left leg has got to go
uphigh and then over the top.

Beat it down and it
will cover it here.

Here we go.

Pick it up.

Adam is determined
not to give up.

Yes!

Ah!

God!

Go, Adam!

Go make it.

Go on!

Yes!

Yes!

Yes!

Yeah!

Hey, Adam, fantastic.

Keep coming.

That was easy.

What?

That was easy.

What courageand
what determination.

The will to win.

You've just seen it.

Come on, Adam.

Good boy.

He's the only one of the group

to pull off the regain.

Take a step down.

Come on, you!

Come on!

I'm tired, and I'm
extremelyhappy that I managed it.

And I'm definitely
happy about that.

Adam, you're an absolute legend.

You're an absolute legend.

You'll be safe out
tonight [inaudible]..

Great stuff.

Let me get one of these.

This rope
challengehas allowed him to show

what he has always said.

He can do anything.

What he did on thatcommando
crawl was incredible

and such a shining
example to all of us

that there are no limits.

It's all about heart,
endeavor, and never giving up.

Total respect for you, Adam.

And so to
theteam of the day, and it's

going to be an interesting
one, with the boys

having won two in a row to pullback from
3, 1 down to 3 all.

It's a really
tough on today, guys.

And you all did amazing
onthat commando crawl, Adam,

in particular.

However, girls, technically,
you did really well,

so to me, it's got
to be the girls.

OK.

One vote for the girls.

Sarah.

This morning during PT, Ciaran,

you really led out in front.

Boys, you were
also very proactive

and cleaning and tidying up.

So for that reason,
boys, you have my vote.

OK, one forthe
boys, one for the girls.

Me, it's got to come down
to the commando crawl.

Adam, you were amazing.

I was cheering andshouting
as much as anyone.

It was fantastic.

But also, I really likedas
your entry into water.

So I'm going to hold
it to the boys today.

Good luck, boys.

All this means, guys,

is for the first time on
theBear Grylls Survival School,

the boys have taken the lead.

Come back from 3, 1.

4, 3 up.

One for the boys.

It's an impressive hattrick
of wins for the boys.

So as a special
prize, we're going

to give them a lie in in
themorning, while the girls do PT.

I think we definitely
deserved to win.

It's been coming
all week, I think,

and we've gone from
3, 1 down to 4, 3 up.

So yeah, all the boys
are in a good mood.

Boys 4, girls, 3.

Always as it should be.

If we lose,
they just shove it in our face

like they think
it's really funny.

So I don't want to lose them.

I want to win.

After another full-on day,

the team are more than
ready to kip down.

But in true survival
style, I have

a special late-night
challenge for them.

You haven't spent a
night truly in a wild

until you've slept in a hammock.

Hammocks are good.

I've alwaysloved
sleeping in hammocks,

and they're vital
inenvironments like the jungle.

You really don't want to
be camping on the ground

when they're deadly
creepy crawlies around.

So grab your kit you'll
need for the night.

You're now going to
set up your hammocks.

Everybody ready?
- Yeah.

Let's go.

I'm feelingquite good because I

wanted to sleep in the hammock.

I've never slept in one before.

I usually go to
sleep to be honest.

I don't care where I sleep,
what shape I sleep in.

I just want to go to sleep.

In a survival situation,

you'll often have to battleon
through extreme exhaustion.

Early on in survival school,
tiredness after a hard day

led to a huge
late-night row in camp.

You can't just think
about yourselves.

Maybe where you're from--

Followed by a formal warning

the next morning.

Swearing, shouting,
andscreaming at each other is out.

People get angry.

You'll get frustrated.

It's the way that youdeal
with it that counts.

I want to see if the weary team

can put together this time.

Guys, come on.

I can't.

I'm tired.

Rattling around,
just likewe've been doing climbing.

And then you will attach it.

And then--

As leader, Tim, demos,

the hammock is stretched
outhigh between two solid trees.

A waterproof sheet or
tarp will then need

to be tied above the hammock.

I'm giving you 20minutes to get this done.

Get it done, and get your
headsdown, and have a good rest.

Everyone has hammocks.

Normally, how this
works, [inaudible]..

I don't even know
where to put a thread.

I can't see anything.

So cool.

I'm just try to go to sleep.

That is too low.

Last tip.

Two hammocks are quickly up.

Hey, guys.

Come on Two is up.
Two to go.

Quickly.

But I'm not sure I'd

want to sleep in them
asthey're very close together

and tied to a rotten tree.

Falls down, they're going
to learn the hard way.

They're going to get a sour bum.

Because they're going
to get straight down.

Guys,
you can'thave them next to each other.

They're too close together.

We'll leave that one on.

Everyone just move.
You're not doing anything.

You're just getting in the way.

What about you?

Take that s half off.

I'm not feeling positive.

I was 10 minutes
ago, but not anymore.

In their tiredness, teamwork

is going out of the window.

Oh.

And as I feared,
tensions are starting to rise.

Stop and
lookat the distance to that.

Yeah, but that
needs to go around it.

I don't know.

I don't know why.

How is
goingto be above feet then?

Well,
you bettertie it around that tree.

Oh, you're tying itaround
that tree knob here.

That tree is
absolutely withered.

We don't have to
literallydo it on this wood.

We can do it on [inaudible].

Oh, my god.

He's been shouting at everyone.

I'm half under and half anyway.

I'm not.

You've got that, Connor.

I'm not getting involvedin these arguments.

Words are said.

That shouldn't be said.

Well, I'm not sleeping
in this one then.

Two more minutes.

But the
teamis definitely learning

to cope better under stress.

They pulled back from the brink,
and Ciaran and Adam leap in

to finish off the hammocks.

Do you guys think they
got what we're doing?

It's OK.

We've done it for you.

The smart boys are in for it.

They still can'thelp
having a dig at the girls.

We're doingall
the girls work, as usual

because they can't tie knots.

I'm just as tired toget
away from these boys.

By the time
theteam gets into the hammocks,

they're all happy
campers once more.

Ooh, it's quite
comfy, guys, actually.

Does anyone need
to be [inaudible]??

This is so show.

Why couldn't we be in
hammocks the whole time?

I feel like going
to fall from you.

It feels like it's
going to come undone.

It would, wouldn't it?

Oh, this is so cool Ican
rock myself to sleep.

Hey, girls,
don't rock yourself too much

or it will come off.

Good night, girls.

Good night, girls.

Good night, girls.

Good night, girls.

Have a lovely rest sleep.

Despite the worries,

the hammocks held up all night.

And everyone seems to love
theexperience as much as I do.

Yes.

It's actually comfy.

I liked it a lot.

Very, very nice.

I slept well, It's
the comfiest sleep yet.

OK, girls one minute.

I want you to get
ready for the path.

Get the blood flowing.

While the boys
areenjoying a lie in for winning

three days in a row,
the girlsare surprisingly fired up

about their daily PT session.

Would you have liked to lie in?

No.

We're fine.

We're happy.

Good.

We're going to do this.

So it's up and over.

Up and over.

One, two, and up.

Three.

Put them down.

It provides
themwith the perfect opportunity

to get their own back forthe
boys' insulting behavior.

Time to get up.

Everybody.

Everybody.

Wake up.

Let's go.

Let's go.

Let's go.

Oh, no.

I put one in the coffee.

Next time onBear
Grylls Survival School,

battling up raging rapids.

It's cold.

That was the last thing ever.

I might have one.

And
chompingdown live earthworms.

Oh, I can feel it.
