Let's get after it.

All over Kansas City
there are neglected mansions

that can be bought
for a bargain.

The worse the start,
the better they end.

It just takes
a little imagination

and a whole lot of hard work

to bring these tired houses
back to life.

- This is fabulous.
- Oh, wow.

[Tamara] With my dad
Ward by my side...

It's so beautiful. I like it.

[Tamara] ...we're helping
clients design and transform
these houses...

- I'm in heaven.
- [laughs]

[man] I love it.

[Tamara] ...into stunning
forever homes.

I'm over here on
the south end of Overland Park

and I'm on my way to meet
Claire and Lluis.

They're a young couple
that bought this house

a few years ago
for a really good price.

This neighborhood is full
of big, old houses.

So, my family actually
knows Claire and Lluis.

My son, Bobby, helps them out
with their yard work.

Now, they've hired me
for their interior design.

They've been doing
some updates to
this house themselves,

but now it's time
to do a major renovation.

So, I'm gonna head over there
and help them.

- Hi.
- Hey, guys.

Welcome.

Okay. It looks like Bobby
did a good job this weekend.

The yard's looking good.

I'm so excited
to get started on this.

We're happy to have you here.

We need some of
your expertise.

I meet Lluis in college and he
was gonna go back to Spain.

He decided to stay
for his masters.

The rest is
kind of history. [laughs]

We both got opportunities
to work in Kansas City.

Fortunately, this
came on the market.

We can on
an open house day one.

The layout and just the amount
of space that we have

was just, like, what we were
looking for at the time.

[Lluis] As soon as
we walked out I said,

"We're gonna have to
put an offer here."

When we first walked through
the house I was like,

"Oh, man,
this is a lot of work."

Yeah, definitely have to do
some updates to make it feel

a little bit more homey
and a little less 1960s.

[laughs]

[Tamara] This house is
a traditional style home
built in 1964.

It's 4,900 square feet
over two levels

with four bedrooms
and five bathrooms.

Claire and Lluis bought
the house for $350,000,

a bargain considering the
rapidly increasing property
values in this neighborhood.

They've set a renovation
budget of $80,000.

Tell me, what kind of stuff
are you envisioning?

I mean, I'm not really
a big fan of the color.

We're gonna do some
different landscaping.

I mean, those bushes
are not our favorite.

- Right.
- [both laugh]

We don't really like
this entryway.

- [Tamara] The bricks.
I'll hold the bricks.
- [Lluis] The bricks.

- Yeah.
- Okay. I can really see what
you were talking about.

These are crumbling.

- Yes.
- Yeah, and it's actually
hollow inside.

I was wondering
about this, though.

When I actually started
playing around with it,

- you can see
that it's hollow in there.
- Oh, my gosh.

[Lluis] So,
it's kind of interesting.

Okay. I want to see what
we can do on the inside.

- I'm excited.
- Awesome. Let's do it.

Okay. Come on in.

[Tamara] For phase one
of this renovation,

we'll focus on the living room
and kitchen,

as well as the utility space
off the kitchen.

Let's see
what needs some help.

Okay. So this is
our living room.

Um, it goes into the kitchen.

It's really dark in here,
isn't it?

- Yes.
- This is... It's heavy.

Zero lighting.

I'm sure this is a really
cozy place to take a nap.

Yeah, yeah. Exactly.

[Tamara] No overhead light
and all the woodwork
and the wood floors.

Brightening it up
is definitely on
the agenda, right?

- Yes.
- [Tamara] Light,
let's get this brighter.

And then,
what about the fireplace?

What are your thoughts
on that?

Does it work? Is it something
you guys actually use?

I mean, it's, it's...

We really like it...

But I feel like we both
don't know how to envision it
with all the wood.

So, there's definitely
some options of what
we can do there.

And make it, really,
the focal point of the room.

So, the beams.
Let's save the beams.

It gives it character.

I think what really dates them
is that they're kind of furry.

So sanding them or maybe
even wrapping them.

- Paint would work, or...
- [Tamara] Okay.

I mean, we'd be also
up to suggestions.

You're going for it. You're
ready to see some change.

Exactly. We're ready
to see some change.

I hear you. It looks to me
like you've already done

a little bit of work.

You've ripped this up but
there's flooring underneath.

So, this was a wall
with, like, a very small
opening here.

- [Tamara] Okay.
- And Lluis,

obviously being kind of
a bigger guy was like,

"This wall has to go. I just
feel to claustrophobic."

So we did knock that down
and redid the floors.

Good call. And then
what about the kitchen?

It's a nice sized kitchen
including a laundry room?

[Claire laughs] Yeah,
it's a little awkward.

But, we do like the overall
layout of the kitchen.

- [Tamara] Sure.
- Right? But the wood
with the wood,

not a fan of that.

- [Tamara] With the tones.
- [Claire] Could we
modernize it a little bit?

- Right. Great cabinets.
- [Claire] Okay.

They're, like,
really good quality.

And I think they'll
paint really nicely.

No need to replace something
that's this good.

Maybe the hardware.
We're actually definitely open

to replacing the hardware,

getting that
more modern, um...

I love that. What about, like,

doing some open shelves
some place.

Have you guys
thought about that?

I think we're open to that.

I would consider taking
these cabinets down

and creating this
as your coffee bar.

Obviously you guys
like coffee as much as I do.

- Yes.
- And so, let's embrace that

and really make this space
feel like it's more open.

The other spot I would
consider it is right here.

I'd take this valance down
and these two cabinets.

We'll just widen
your whole kitchen.

- I like that idea.
- Yeah.

Okay, so what
about countertops?

[Lluis] We thought
we would keep them.

We think that we can put
our budget somewhere else

where it's gonna make
a bigger impact.

I think we can work
with this and make it
really flow nicely.

I would suggest doing
a different tile
for this backsplash.

- Okay.
- Perfect.

[Tamara] Yay.

In the living room,
we'll cover the dark paneling
with dry wall

and paint it a crisp white
to brighten it up.

Then we'll add a plaster
finish on the fireplace

and paint the overhead beams
in black for an elevated look.

In the kitchen, we'll
replace the end cabinets
with open shelves

and then we'll paint
the existing cabinets
in a sage green,

complimented by a soft white
picket style backsplash.

And we'll finish it all off
with brass bowls

and pendent lights
for a touch of glam.

What are your thoughts
about the laundry room?

[Claire] We don't have
anywhere to put our stuff
when we walk in.

[Tamara] We can find
another place to put
the washer and dryer.

[Claire] I think so.

Making this a real
mud space I think
will make a huge difference

and just kind of
maximize the space.

[Claire and Lluis] Awesome.

Okay, I'm really excited about
getting started on this.

- So are we.
- Yeah, definitely.

[Tamara] We have $50,000
for phase one to renovate
the main living areas

plus the exterior
of this property.

My timeline to get it done
is five weeks.

Hey, how's it going?

- Good, how are you?
- This is exciting,

to start taking this down and
see the kitchen come together.

Yeah, for sure.

Claire and Lluis' kitchen is
really well-made cabinetry.

It's just too crowded.

So I wanted to take out
some of the countertops

to make an intentional
coffee bar area.

But then also take them out
by the kitchen sink.

So much better already.

So much bigger
and brighter feeling.

Yeah, the whole space
just feels airy.

You think they'll let me take
the rest of these down?

[laughs]

- So, this backsplash?
- [Deandre] Yep?

Getting out all the dark gray,
painting the cabinets

a nice green color is kind of
what I'm thinking.

I think that
would be really cool.

- The open shelves,
some bright white tile.
- Yep.

- It'll change everything.
- Yep.

[Tamara] I invited Claire
and Lluis over to my store

to discuss one of the design
elements of the utility room.

I wanted to talk
about the mud space.

- Okay.
- So, everything around
this window, like,

what are we gonna do
with that space?

So, if you think about it,
when you walk
into your kitchen,

you see right
into the mud space.

What could we do to
draw your eye down there?

Wallpaper could, like,
make it pop.

I wanted to show you
these options.

- Okay.
- We've got

the four different styles
that I kind of pulled here

because I wanted to kind of...
I wanted to get your opinion.

- [Claire] I think I have to
say no to blue.
- [Tamara] No to blue?

I think it's a little too
out there for our style.

So, this is a no-go.

Let's go between these two.
What are your thoughts?

- Like this one, Lluis?
- That one's not my favorite.

- [chuckles]
- Not your favorite?

I'm not gonna lie. It's a bit,
a little too bold for me.

I think my, my opinion
I would lean more towards
one of these two.

[Tamara] Okay, here,
let's put it like this
so you can really see.

So, we're
envisioning it like this.

Like fun, whimsical.

- Remember it's got
the window right there.
- Yeah.

- Cute.
- Or this one

feels a little bit more bright
and draws your eye back there.

- I think it's that one.
- Yeah.

Ah. That was my winner too.

It just finishes
the whole space nicely.

I'm gonna get this
ordered right away.

- That'd be perfect.
- Okay, great.

- It was so good
to see you guys.
- You too.

- All right.
We'll see you soon.
- All right, bye.

- Bye.
- Bye.

[Ward] Bring it down.

You're not even
down to the ground, Bob.

Get that stuff done.

Welcome home.

[Claire] Oh, my gosh.

I'm at Lee's Summit today.
We're gonna paint

all the cabinet doors
for Claire and Lluis' house

this really beautiful
green color.

I'm super excited
to see it come to life.

Claire and Lluis' kitchen
had really good cabinetry

and the layout was really
pretty good as well,

so, we want to
save the cabinets,

just update them
with a really fantastic color.

- Some gloves for you.
- Perfect. Thank you.

I love painting.

Painting in a paint booth
is way more fun than
painting in my driveway.

- Primer's done. Now we get
to do the real pretty stuff.
- That's right.

[Tamara] For kitchen cabinets,

you always want to
use an enamel.

This, I'm just really
wanting it to be a beautiful
color and stay well.

Oh, my gosh.
This color is looking good.

Exactly what I was hoping for.

Okay.

I think Claire and Lluis
are gonna love this.

Looks great.

[Tamara] While I was out
painting the cabinet doors,

my crew was hard at work
in the kitchen painting
the base cabinets to match.

- Deandre? Hey, got these.
- Hey, how's it going? Awesome.

I'm stopping by Claire
and Lluis' house today

to check on the progress

and I've brought the new
floating shelves

to put where
the upper cabinets
used to be in the kitchen.

I mean, look how much
more open this feels.

Those look so good.

The cabinets are gonna look
really fantastic.

[Deandre] This is definitely
the most unique color.
I love it.

I'm super curious how
it's going to turn out with
these countertops, though.

[Deandre] Look at that.

Um...

- I don't love that countertop.
- [Deandre] Yeah.

Claire and Lluis
didn't love it to begin with.

And I think if we can
just save a little money
somewhere else,

getting these replaced with
a really beautiful countertop

is gonna make
all the difference.

- [Deandre] Yeah.
- We need to give Lluis a call

- and see what we
can sell him on.
- Okay.

- [phone ringing]
- [Lluis on phone] Hello.

Hey, Lluis, how's it going?

[Lluis] I'm good, how are you?

We're doing good.
I'm here in your kitchen
and I have a question.

Have you pulled the paper back
on the countertops
to see them together?

[Lluis] We have not.

If I were able to
save you some money
in a couple other places,

like some landscaping,
maybe work us into
some new countertops?

[Lluis] If we can work
the budget somewhere else,

we're 100% in
for the new countertops.

Lluis, I'm gonna set up a time
for you and Claire and I

to head over and take a peek
at some countertops.

Does that work?

[Lluis] That sounds
like a plan.

Okay. Thanks, Lluis.
We'll see you soon.

- Yes. Perfect.
- Way better.

These are
all the quartz slabs.

I'm here with Claire
and Lluis picking out
the kitchen countertops.

So, quartz is super durable,
easy to live with.

But I wanted to kind of
get a feel from you guys,

like, do you like
a really subtle look

to your countertop?

Or do you like something
a little bit more bold?

- I feel like I'm in between.
- I know bright.

- I know bright...
- Maybe white?

Yeah, I mean, I feel like...

- Maybe white
to match the theme.
- I feel like the white kind of

goes with what
we're feeling now.

[Tamara] So, this is a little
too much for you?

- I think so.
- I think that's a little
too much for me.

[Tamara] What about
something like this

where it's got the movement
but it's not quite as loud?

- In your face.
- Yeah.

- I really like it.
- [Tamara] Yeah?

- I think it's really pretty.
- I do like that one.

I could see that,
already, like, installed.

- [Claire] I like that a lot.
- [Tamara laughs]

- You can totally--
- [Claire] Just go ahead
and install it.

- I can envision that one.
- Yeah.

Claire and Lluis landed on
this beautiful slab that has

subtle movement in it.

It's not real heavy,
but it isn't boring.

This kitchen is the bulk
of their budget for phase one

and I really want
to make sure that they love
every piece of it

and these countertops
are gonna be what takes it
over the top.

- All right, so.
We'll make it happen.
- [Lluis] Perfect. Thank you.

[Tamara] The kitchen
is coming along great.

In the living room,
we're getting the dark

and dated feel out of there.

The crew is covering over
wood paneling with dry wall

so that Deandre and I can
come in and modernize the room

by painting it a bright white.

And later, we'll plaster
the fireplace brick
in a matching tone.

We just brought it
to the modern age already.

- [Tamara] We took the '60s
right out of this house.
- [Deandre chuckles]

[Tamara] Today is a big day
at Claire and Lluis'.

We're installing cabinets
in the mudroom to give

some more organization.

And the new countertops that
Claire and Lluis picked out

are getting installed.

Look at those countertops.

- Yes.
- [Tamara] The white
just looks amazing.

- [Deandre] Mmm-hmm.
- With this,
it's like next level.

This kitchen is transforming
before our eyes

and I know Claire and Lluis
are gonna go crazy for it.

How are we doing on this?

It looks like we've got
quite a bit of it done.

[Deandre] Yeah,
they've been at it all day,

so they're getting
that knocked out.

- We can get started here
if you want.
- Sounds good to me.

Now that we've got the tile
going up for the backsplash,

the shelves can go in,
the doors can go in,

the hardware can get put on,
a couple lights hung

and we're in good shape.

This is looking really good.

Let's go.

How's it going up here?

Where'd everybody go?

- What do you think?
- This is amazing.

[Claire] I love it.

[Ward] You know, Tamara,
there's a golf course

behind Claire
and Lluis' house.

[Tamara] No, Dad.
It's a work day.

- All right.
- Why are we over here
doing all the work for Lluis?

Hey, hey. How we doing?

Hey, Deandre, how's it going?

I brought reinforcements.

- [Deandre] The whole squad.
- [Tamara] Everybody's here.

- I'm just here to look pretty.
- Yeah?

- You're doing
a good job at it.
- Thank you.

Well, I told Lluis that
if they would get
new countertops,

I would bring the help
for the yard.

- You did say that.
- I did.

So, here they are.

- Free labor at its finest.
- [Deandre] Awesome.

- You guys any good
with a hammer?
- Oh, yeah.

So, I'm going to let you guys
take over on the brick

'cause all of this
needs to come out.

Have fun. I'm gonna
get the painting done.

- All right.
- We should teams.

All right, we got four.

- I think we got you beat.
- Yeah, okay. Yeah.

- Well, I'll even take
the small hammer.
- All right.

[Ward] Bring it down!

Whee! Hey, Ward,
do you feel like a winner?

I do. I feel like
a real winner.

I think the old guys
got this one.

Yeah?

And all your guy's bricks
were loose.

You're not even
down to the ground, Bob.

Get that stuff done.

Bob, I want you and Tom
to think about this.

- You guys lost to
a couple of old me.
- You guys, hey. I finished.

I did my part.

[laughing heartily]

I'm, like, basically done.

Except, we got, uh, all these
shrubs to get out of here.

While the boys are
finishing up the yard work,

I am spraying these
singles with this really
awesome blue gray.

It's gonna look fantastic,

especially once we get all
the lime wash on the brick

and we've got that nice, crisp
gray and white look going on.

It's gonna be good.

It's such a huge difference

when you get rid
of old shrubbery.

We want to get this
cleaned up and make

the front of this house
look as awesome as it can.

Deandre, Deandre? Do you guys
want to go hit some balls?

Let's go.
Let's go to the golf course.

Let's go.

All right.

How's it going up here?

Where'd everybody go?

[Tamara] They just left?

Were you gonna come
help me paint?

There we go.

Hey.

Look at that.

Hey, Dad!

What are you doing?

You're supposed to be working.

[Ward] I can't hear you.

[Deandre] Let's do it.

Guys, okay. Fun's over.
Get back here.

Let's do it. Whoo-hoo.

- Hey. What about me?
- [Deandre] See ya later, Ward.

[Tamara] At Lluis
and Claire's house,

the crew has been
hard at work.

Outside, we finished up
the landscaping

and painted the exterior brick
in a more modern white.

Inside, we painted
the living room ceiling

in a fresh coat
of white paint,

and the living room
beams a crisp black
to add some contrast.

In the kitchen, we finished
installing the cabinet doors

and applied a light stain
to the shelves.

And I'm putting up
the wallpaper

that Claire and Lluis
picked out for the mudroom.

We're not just
papering up to this point?

- Nope. All the way up
to the other seam.
- Okay.

This wallpaper for the mudroom
is gonna look fantastic.

We've got the beautiful
cabinetry and countertops.

And this is the piece
that's gonna really make
everything pop.

It's a little bit natural
but still super bright.

It's going to tie
everything together
as soon as you look in

from the living room
through the kitchen

on into this
beautiful mud space.

Okay. Which way is up?

[Steve] Up just a hair.

This is one of the last steps
before we're in here staging

and everything comes together.

[Steve] It looks good.

All right. [sighs]
Looking good.

It's staging day
at Claire and Lluis' house

and I'm excited to start
getting the furniture in

so they can really see
how much of a difference

all of these cosmetic changes
have really made.

I like the look of all this

and this piece
is fantastic, too.

I feel like that's just
too blocked off.

I don't feel like the couch
is blocking the kitchen,

the same way as
blocking the entryway.

- Looks great.
- I mean,
if the fire was going,

I could lay back
and take a nap right here.

Actually, I could probably
do it without the fire.

[sighs] Yeah,
this is pretty cozy.

Oh, my gosh.

Oh, my gosh. Claire,
this looks really good.

[Tamara] We're putting
the finishing touches

on the main living areas
of this house.

Which means,
we're finishing up phase one.

How it's time to bring
Claire and Lluis in

to see what we've done.

Originally, everything
about this exterior

was dated and screamed '60s.

But now, we painted
the house a dark gray

and whitewashed all the brick,

given it fresh,
new landscaping,

and a new lease on life.

[Claire] Wow. I love it.

[Lluis] I think the whitewash
looks really good

- and the little, like,
uneven pattern.
- [Claire] I love it.

Yeah, I love some of
the bare brick.

It, like, gives it just
some more character.

- [Lluis] It's so perfect.
- [Claire] Wow, is this
even our home?

[Lluis] I know. I'm asking
the same question.

- Welcome home.
- Hi.

Come on in.

Can you believe
the courtyard's gone?

[gasps] I honestly, like,
forgot that it was there.

- Um, so, yes.
- It's looks so good.

[Tamara] Lluis and Claire
did not like the old brick

pillars in the entryway
or the haphazard shrubbery.

So, we took out everything
and modernized the front

with limelight
hydrangea trees,

a few accent plants
for color and then
low-maintenance river rock

to complete this fresh,
beautiful exterior.

- Let me show you this.
- Okay.

- Oh, my God.
- Oh, my gosh.

Claire, this looks
really good.

When Claire and Lluis
first showed me
their living room,

it was definitely
stuck in the '60s

and brown on brown.

Now, we've given it
a modern twist

that's upgraded the space.

This used to be all wood.

- So dark.
- That fireplace is, like,
completely different.

[Tamara] We freshened up
this room with
a white coat of paint,

plastered the fireplace
to give it a more
modern appeal,

just overall brightness.

I love how the beams
are the anchor.

That black just really
finishes the room off.

Yeah, and they no longer
look nasty furry.

Originally, the family room
had furry cedar beams

that gave it
an unfinished look.

We sanded them down
and gave them

a black coat of paint
to give it a finished feel.

This room was dark,
dated, and definitely heavy.

Now, we've given it
a fresh, modern twist

that upgraded the space.

- Okay.
- I want to see the rest of it.

- [Lluis] Thank you.
- Let's go see the kitchen.

Wow. What a change.

Lluis and Claire
opened up the space

between the living room
and the kitchen,

but they needed a more
cohesive design

to bring it all together.

So glad it worked out

to repaint and keep
our cabinets.

- Yes.
- [Claire] Beautiful.

The green is amazing.

Originally this kitchen
was wrapped

in dated brown cabinets.

We gave it a facelift

with a nice, bright,
springy green color,

and we removed
some of the uppers,

installing some
floating shelves

to give it a more open
and airy feel.

I'm very glad the green
counter tops are gone.

- I am so glad.
- [all laughing]

Yeah, right, he was
not a fan of those.

Like, please let me get rid
of the counter tops

'cause I knew how great
this was gonna look.

When we started,
Claire and Lluis wanted

to keep the green
counter tops,

but when they saw
the cabinets painted,

all of that had to go

for the bright white
quartz counter tops,

that's easy maintenance

and has some
nice subtle movement

of veining throughout.

And the counter
to ceiling tile

- [Lluis] Yeah, it makes
a statement for sure.
- It's beautiful.

[Tamara] We got rid of the old
slate backsplash

and chose a bright white
picket mosaic

to line the kitchen,
counter to ceiling,

to give it a more fresh,
modern look.

Doing the open shelves
and then the tile

changed everything.

- What do you think?
- This is amazing.

[Tamara] What was once
a dated '60s kitchen

is now a bright open space
that flows perfectly
into the family room.

Right, let me show you
the mud room.

Wow.

That wallpaper is stunning.

I love it.

[Tamara] We decided
to repurpose the laundry
and mud space,

take everything out
and start from scratch,

adding in beautiful cabinetry
that matches the kitchen,

topping it with
the quartz counter top

and a fun, whimsical
wallpaper up the wall.

The wallpaper is definitely
a statement for the room.

I wanted it to really
be kind of the "Wow"

- when you look
all the way through...
- [Lluis] Mmm-hmm.

[Tamara]
...from the family room,
the kitchen,

you see the "Wow" moment.

- I really like it.
- I love it.

- [Tamara] Yay!
- I can't wait to see
what's next.

[Tamara] Well,
phase one is done!

So, we've got a little bit
more work to do in phase two.

We're really excited.

I'm really excited too.

- Probably a little more
excited than you.
- Yeah?

We're expecting a baby boy
in a few months.

- Congratulations!
- [Claire] Thanks.

- Oh, my gosh.
- So now, the countdown is on,

- just want all of it done.
- So we really need

- to get after this, right?
- Yes.

- [laughing]
- Oh, this is really exciting.

- Congratulations.
- Thanks.

- Thank you.
- Well, let's get started!

Let's do it.

[Tamara] The overall
design plan for phase one

was to bring it
out of the '60s

and create a much more modern
and clean vibe

that's fitting
for Lluis and Claire's style.

And I think we were able
to do just that.

They started with
a total renovation budget
of $80,000.

We spent $50,000 of that
renovating phase one.

That leaves us $30,000
for phase two,

and I've given myself
four weeks to do it.

So phase one went amazing.

I want to see what we've got
to work with for phase two.

[Claire] Okay, let's go do it.

[Tamara] For phase two,
we'll start with the bathroom
in the hallway,

and then we'll tackle
the main suite

of Claire and Lluis' home.

[Lluis] Look here,
so I'm gonna show you here
the bathroom.

-[Claire] We really don't need
a full bath...
-[Tamara] Right.

[Claire] ...on this floor

- [Tamara] Oh, okay.
- [Claire] Yeah.

You're right. There's no need
for a whole bathroom

right here in the hallway.

The bedrooms are all upstairs

other than the main bedroom.

I'm really ready to get rid of
the paint toilet for you.

- [both laugh]
- We are too.

Now, main bedroom is this way?

- Yes.
- [Claire] Yeah, yep.

- Okay, let's take a peak.
- [Claire] It's right here
off to the left.

[Lluis] So all this
side of the house,

what we're thinking is
completely gut everything...

- [Tamara] Oh, wow.
- [Lluis] ...out.

- [Tamara] Okay.
- [Claire] Back here.

[Lluis] So there's two rooms,

uh, three closets,

- and we're just trying to
make all that one big suite.
- [Tamara] Right.

You're thinking
knock this whole wall out...

- [Claire] Right.
- [Tamara] ...and just
opening up the whole thing?

- Yes.
- I love it.

- [Tamara] Closet, is that...
- [Lluis] Yes,

so this is the closet
that we're using right now.

- A little small, so...
- A little cluttered.

...for what we're looking for.

Okay, and then bathroom
over here?

We're thinking have
a nice shower,

two sinks together
next to each other.

- So...
- I'd love a tub.

A soaking tub or bubbles?

- Soaking tub.
- [Tamara] Okay.

- Yeah. [laughs]
- [Tamara] That's
my preference too.

[Tamara] So let's see.

- [Lluis] Yeah.
- [Claire] Yep.

[Tamara] Shower, vanity,

toilet, and then another
vanity out here.

- [Claire] Mmm-hmm.
- We can do better than this.

- [Lluis] Yeah.
- [Claire] Yeah. [laughs]

[Tamara] Definitely.

So knocking down this,
what's on that side?

- [Lluis] Nothing.
- [Tamara] I mean,
this is gonna be...

...pretty epicly huge.

- [laughing]
- [Tamara] Right?

- Like, this is
a big room already...
- [Claire] Yeah.

...that's a big room,
but then add all of this.

Do you feel good
about getting rid of
a bedroom down here?

There's other rooms
in the house upstairs...

- [Tamara] Okay.
- ...and so this is something

that we really want
to enjoy for ourselves.

This is gonna be so amazing.

For phase two, we'll start

by knocking out the back wall
of the two closets

to open up the space.

We'll add a stylish fireplace
and a statement wall

with a soothing wallpaper,

and we'll top off the room
with an elegant chandelier.

In the main bathroom,
we'll install a multi-tone

penny tile floor
with a runway pattern,

and we'll add a double vanity
with a marble top.

Then we'll put in
a luxurious soaker tub,

plus a walk-in shower
with bold accents

and sleek black fixtures.

Finally, we'll create a giant
new walk-in closet

with a textured wallpaper
on the ceiling

and two gold
flush-mount lights.

I'm excited to get started.

Let's do it.

- This is gonna be fun
to see this all come down.
- For sure.

I'm ready to start phase two
of Claire and Lluis' house,

and I'm meeting Deandre
to start the demo
of the main suite.

Three, two, one!

Whoa!

Look at that.

Looking good.

Already more open.

Yeah, working up a sweat.

I want to create an open
and beautiful bedroom

for Claire and Lluis
with a walk-in closet,

and a beautiful bathroom
is a gonna be a game changer.

Okay, the rest is you.

[Deandre] This is my area.

Wow. This is gonna be
a huge suite.

- [Deandre] All the way across?
- Yeah.

All good, let's start
getting this out.

[Deandre] Cool.

[Tamara] Deandre and the crew
are finishing demo

on Lluis and Claire's
main suite.

With all the walls
knocked out,

now, we can start framing
the new walk-in closet,

main bathroom,
and the spectacular
new fireplace.

I stopped in to see my sister
to get her thoughts

on a wallpaper
for Claire and Lluis.

[Sara Anderson]
So what are you up to?

[Tamara] I'm trying to decide
on a wall paper

for my client's half-bath.

- Awesome, how fun.
- [Tamara] He and his wife,
Claire, they like color,

so I want to do something
a little preppier in there.

What colors are in there now?

- Like, white,
a little bit of gold.
- [Sara] Uh-huh.

So just a really classic look

- is kinda what I'm thinking.
- Okay, do you want to have
texture in there,

or are you wanting it
more smooth?

Mmm, I don't know.
I think it depends
on the paper.

[Sara] Okay.

What about this guy?

[Tamara] I really like that.

- Um...
- This one?

I love that one, let's put
that one in the maybe pile.

[Sara] Oh, wait a second.

[Tamara] Ooh, I love that one.

[Sara] What about that?

[Tamara] That feels very fun
and youthful.

- Absolutely,
that would be so fun.
- [Tamara] Uh-huh.

That would be easy
to decorate around.

[Tamara] I think so too,

- and it goes with
everything else.
- [Sara] Mmm-hmm.

Okay, I feel like we did it.

- Okay, me too.
- Wait, that was easy.

Yes, it was.

- Okay.
- Sister power.

There we go.

While I've been working
on the design details,

Deandre and his team
have been making
quick progress

on Lluis and Claire's
main suite.

The drywall is up,

and we've completed
prepping and patching
the beautiful wood floors.

Deandre, this room
is looking really good.

- I can't wait to see
the fireplace install.
- [Deandre] Yes.

I'm here to help
get the trim painted

and start finishing
these spaces off.

First step to getting
this room painted

is trimming out
the entire room.

We've put all new baseboards
and trim around everything

with the new doors,
the new fireplace.

So we need to get
all of that enamel work done

before we can get started
on the color for the walls.

[Deandre] I got an idea.

[Tamara] What's that?

[Deandre] Just so
they always know

that we did this for them.

[Tamara] Ah, okay,
wait a second.

Give me that back.

Lluis and Claire forever!

[Deandre] That is art.

Good to go!

I asked Claire and Lluis
to meet me at
the furniture store today

so we could pick out
the perfect bed

for their new main suite.

So the color in your bedroom
has turned out so beautiful.

It's just, like,
a nice, calm color.

- [Claire] Definitely.
- [Tamara] And I want to pick

just the right bed
for your room.

I would lean a little bit more
on the modern side.

Like, this bed has definitely
got a modern vibe

- with this pattern.
- [Claire] Yeah.

I think maybe
a little lighter.

- [Tamara] The dark is just
a little heavy...
- [Claire] Yeah.

...for how bright and light
the room looks.

I'm liking this.

[Claire] Oh, yeah.

[Tamara] The color,
it's kind of like
a blonde wash.

I feel like it goes
with the vibe of the room

- of feeling calm
and welcoming.
- [Tamara] Mmm-hmm.

[Lluis] When are we
actually gonna try to
test the beds, right?

- Go for it.
See how this feels.
- [laughing]

Okay, yeah,
definitely. Like...

All right, well, if you're
gonna do it...

- I'm gonna jump on it.
- [Claire] ...I wanna do it.

What do you think?
Is there enough room
for the dog in here?

- Oh, yeah, always room.
- There's always room
for the dog for sure.

- She'll find
a spot regardless.
- [laughing]

That might be the one.

Um, I think we found it.

- Awesome.
- [Claire] Awesome.
We're excited.

- Go get it delivered.
- [Claire] It's so close.

Like that.

Perfect.

Whoo!

Oh, looks like
we got the tile.

[Deandre] Yep, yep.
For the main bathroom.

[Tamara] Awesome.

I wanted to be here
with Deandre

when we're laying out the tile
for the bathroom floor.

It's really intricate.

There's a lot of
little details

that I want to make sure
he is aware of.

I wanted this bathroom
to feel elevated

and interesting
and a little bit over the top,

but also very calm
and natural feeling.

So using these two different
tones of penny tile,

a bright white,
a creamy white,

and then the gold banding
all the way through,

almost like a runway
through the bathroom.

I mean, I think this looks
pretty incredible.

Claire and Lluis are gonna
go crazy for this.

- [Deandre] Yeah,
I'm in love with it.
- Yeah.

So this is gonna be
a straight stripe
down the center...

- [Deandre] Yep.
- [Tamara] ...and then make
a 90 degree left turn.

It'll be great.

At Claire and Lluis',
we're working on

one of my favorite parts
of the process, wallpaper.

[Deandre] I think it
looks good.

That's looking really good.

We're putting up a beautiful
patterned wallpaper

in the bedroom
to create an accent wall,

as well as wallpaper
in the half-bathroom,

and we're installing
a metallic gold wallpaper

on the ceiling
of the main closet.

The penny tile fits
in perfectly,

and we're installing
and grouting it.

We have a little tile
left over,

and I came up
with a unique idea
of how to use it.

Claire and Lluis are friends,

and I wanted to be sure
that I left them something

extra special in the house.

So I'm making them
a beautiful bath tray.

I hate seeing things
go to waste,

and when I found all this
extra tile and trimming,

I knew this was
the perfect way
to finish off the tray.

Time for staging
at Claire and Lluis' house
in the bedroom,

and I am so excited.

The transformation here
has been extraordinary.

[Sara] We have this also.

- Ooh, that's cozy.
- Yes.

I wanted to give Claire
a neutral palette
with her furniture,

so that we could
give her pops of color
with the pillows,

the accessories,
and all this artwork.

How awesome is this fireplace?

[Sara] Ugh, so cozy.

[Tamara] Okay, too much to do
to get too comfy.

- Ready to see the bathroom?
- [Claire] Let's do it.

- Oh, I...
- This looks incredible.

Looks amazing.

Phase two renovation
is complete,

just a few finishing touches,

and we're ready
to welcome them home.

The exterior of this home
was dated in the '60s.

I wanted to give this home
a modern aesthetic

and some updated charm.

Inside, we took a dark
and lackluster living room

and turned it into a bright
and relaxing space.

Then, we gave a dated kitchen

a stunning and modern transformation,

and the cramped mud space
got a makeover
from top to bottom.

Now, phase two is done,

and I'm ready to show it off
to Claire and Lluis.

- You ready for phase two?
- Yes.

So, we were able to get
a half-bath right here.

How cute is this.

[Tamara] We decided
to transform the entire space,

turning it into a half-bath.

I reimagined this bathroom
with trim work waist down
in a crisp white

and beautiful scalloped
navy blue and white wallpaper
on the top,

making this
a perfect half-bath.

All right, let's go
see the bedroom.

- Let's do it.
- Finally. [laughs]

All right.

[Claire] Oh, my goodness.

I'm in heaven right now.

[laughing]

[Tamara] Originally,
Claire and Lluis' main suite

had zero character,
nothing real special about it.

But now, we've opened
everything up,

changed the entire footprint
of this end of the house.

We decided to blow through
from the main suite

into the guest room,

taking all of that
closet space

and turning it into one
huge main suite.

It's so calming.

I love the color choice
with that wall paper.

Ugh, I don't want
to leave ever.

My main goal
for Claire and Lluis'
main suite

was to give them
a spa-like oasis.

I think we accomplished that
with all of these
fabulous features.

In the bedroom, we added
a statement wallpaper.

That one accent wall
felt like the perfect way

to make this an inviting space
for Claire and Lluis.

- [Claire] So cozy.
- [Lluis] I really like
the fireplace actually.

- It's very relaxing.
-[Tamara laughing]
Isn't it great?

Like, you could sit here,
lay down, read a book.

We added a beautiful fireplace
that's cozy

and perfect for sitting
and reading a book.

With beautiful open shelving
to the side, we were able

to give them a really fabulous
fireplace sitting area

right here in the main suite.

- [Lluis] Yeah.
- I am loving this.

- This is so good, yes.
- [Tamara] Isn't that great.

I feel like the whole room
is so calm and nurturing.

We pulled out
the hideous carpet

and added beautiful
hardwood floors

throughout the entire bedroom,

added a stunning chandelier

that acts like the jewelry
of the room.

The chandelier
is the perfect fit.

We made it truly relaxing,

and a space
that they will enjoy
for years to come.

It's beautiful.
I'm, like, in shock.

I don't want to
leave this room.

It's pretty cozy,
but we're not done.

- Ready to see the bathroom?
- [Claire] Let's do it.

- [Claire] Oh, my goodness.
- [Lluis] Wow,
this looks amazing.

- I...
- This looks incredible.

The main bathroom
was cramped, choppy,

not functional at all
for a modern couple.

Now, we've opened it all up,

creating a beautiful runway
through the entire bathroom,

where it felt like
a beautiful spa.

Originally, there was
a single vanity

that was extra short.

Now, we have a double vanity

that's absolutely elevated
the look and the height,

adding two stunning
light fixtures,

left and right of
a huge sheet mirror,

so it's bright and airy
in here at all times.

Kinda feels like
you're on vacation.

- Yes, are we in, like,
la resort or something?
- Yeah.

[Tamara] I wrapped the room
in a bright white

and then did an accent wall
of blush behind the vanity

to give it a little
something extra.

The big "Wow" factor
we went for

is definitely in the floor.

We went with
an interesting design

in penny tile
with two different tones

and a beautiful gold border.

This runway...

- [Tamara] Straight to
your soaking tub.
-[Claire] ...I love it.

- [Lluis] Yeah.
- This, I know, was, like,
the catalyst

for the whole renovation
to get you a soaking tub...

- [Claire laughing] Yes.
- [Tamara] ...and it makes
such a statement here.

Claire's dream was to have
a soaking tub,

so we went over the top
with a beautiful

floating soaker
in front of the window

and topped it
with a stunning chandelier.

So I made this tray for you

so that while you're soaking
in this massive tub,

you can set your glass
of water...

[all laughing]

[Tamara] ...and someday,
wine and your book

and just sit here relaxing
and enjoying the space.

[Claire] That's so cute.
It matches the floor.

A little extra something,
check out the shower.

[Claire] Oh, my gosh.

[gasps] Wow, look how big
this shower is.

It is huge.

[Tamara] We created
a stunning shower,

white subway tile
and gold banded details
that match the floor.

- Let me show you the closet.
- Okay.

[Claire] Oh, my gosh.

Right? It's crazy huge.

- I...
- It's a whole other room.

Right? It might be
the nursery.

- [laughing]
- Literally.

Claire and Lluis
each had their own closets

that were really
not functioning well.

Now, we have a stunning,
huge walk-in closet,

and we topped it
with a gorgeous gold wallpaper
on the ceiling.

I think we actually may need
to go on a shopping spree.

- Oh, I love it.
- [Claire] Just a little bit.

Of course we do.

I love it,
totally here for it.

I love this.

- [Tamara] All right, you ready
for some friends to come over?
- [Claire] Yes.

Beyond definitely
my wildest dreams,

and I think Claire's
on the same page.

So, um, we're super, super
happy for it.

- [Claire] Hey, Kels.
- Hi.

- [Lluis] Hey, Kels.
- [Claire] Come on in.

I can't wait to see it.

Place looks so good.

[Lluis] Right?

We're now, like, proud
and, like, want our friends
to come over

even more than we did before.

I love these
floating shelves...

- Amazing.
- ...and how there used to be
a cabinet there

and the added lighting.

The main bedroom
is incredible.

This looks unbelievable.

- Completely different, right?
- Seriously.

The fact that we were able
to take two rooms
and three closets

and make it into this
beautiful suite

that it is calming and cozy

and doesn't feel just
so old and dated

is absolutely amazing.

Oh.

[laughing] Oh, my God.

[gasps] It is beautiful.

We think it'll just be
a great atmosphere to...

To host people and to now,
just start our next chapter

with... With the baby.

It's always amazing
to transform a home.

But when it's friends,
it's even more fun.

Now, Claire and Lluis
have a beautiful home

that they can enjoy
for the next chapter
of their lives.

We spent $50,000
on phase one renovations

and $30,000 on phase two

with purchase and renovation
at the total of $430,000,

with a potential resale value
of $550,000.

And that's worth celebrating
with Claire and Lluis

and some family and friends.

- Isn't it amazing.
- Yeah.

You guys did a ton of work.

- Yeah, it took a while.
- All that stuff there.

[Tamara] There we go.

Obviously, we are just
blown away.

We love everything
about the house,

and now, I feel like
we're officially ready

to welcome the baby boy,
and we're so excited.

So thank you so much.

- Cheers, guys.
- Cheers.

[all toasting]

Now, I get to do
a nursery next, right?

- [all laughing]
- Yeah.
