Army Wives (2007–2013): Season 6, Episode 23 - Onward - full transcript

After more losses for the division, colonel Sherwood's brigade is sent back to Afghanistan. Trevor secretly hoped for a last tour, but his transfer to the rangers stands, so his family moves off base. General Holden's diner was with a Pentagon official, because Fort Marshall is scheduled for another merger, now with an air force base. Hector helps Gloria convince his unborn bastard's mother Penny to put it up for adoption by a lesbian couple on base, despite her Bible bigot upbringing. General Clarke, although a nightmare rehab patient, recovers just in time to 'stand' at the troops' send-off, but the airplane gets into trouble.

Previously on Army Wives...

- What is this?
- A water bottle.

I thought it would be nice
to have for your rehab.

You know, dad, they say
a positive attitude

is an important
part of recovery.

Really?

Is that what they say?

What is wrong with you?

Your daughter gives you a gift,

and you can barely
say "thank you"?

I want to apologize
for the way I acted.

- It's okay.
- No.

Not okay.

Just promise me you
won't give up.

I promise.

You told me I was putting too
much pressure on myself.

You were right.

Maybe it's time
we talk adoption.

- What? - Didn't you say Michael

was working late tonight?

Well, yeah, that's what he told me.
Why?

Who's he with?

Well, when you couldn't join
us last night for dinner,

uh, I took... I took
Denise out for dinner.

As we were walking
back to the car,

we noticed you were
at a restaurant

with a... with a companion.

Close the door, Frank.

Have a seat.

I understand your concern
about what you saw.

Were the situation reversed,

I'm sure Claudia Joy would
want an explanation.

But there is nothing
to it, Frank,

at least not what you think.

I told you I was working
last night, and I was.

The woman you saw me with
was Colonel Olivia Sawyer,

United Stated Air Force.

Really?

From the Pentagon. Attached
to the BRAC Commission.

They're not thinking of closing
this place again, are they?

No. Realignment.

Fort Marshall is merging
with Bring Air Force Base.

Colonel Sawyer and I have been
working on it for months.

Last night word came down the
merger has been confirmed.

We went out to celebrate.

Look, sir, I'm sorry if...
if I...

No apology necessary.

I should have been
more discreet.

In any case, the
formal announcement

will be made later today.

You just happen to be
the first to know.

Yes, sir.

Wow. Joint command?

Yeah.

Jackie! Come in here!

What is it? What happened?

Look.

I can move my legs.

Okay. This is all our vendors

with their emergency
contact numbers.

Um, I keep the list on my phone,

but I also have hard
copies at home, in my car.

You just never know when
you're gonna need it.

- Right.
- Am I going too fast?

I know the last week has
been like a crash course.

Nah, I'm good.

Okay. Um, I have to leave

- to get ready for the movers.
- Go.

Okay. I-I'll be back later.

Don't sweat it, Rox.
How you doing?

Strangely, I'm kind of excited.

Uh, we're actually not open yet.

I know. I'm looking for Gloria.

Oh. Um, she's right there.

Penny.

Can I talk to you?

Sure. What's going on?

Okay. Take a deep breath.
Tell me what's wrong.

Everything.

The baby?

No, no. The baby's fine.

Oh, thank God. So
what could be so bad?

Me. I can't be a mom.

What are you talking about?

I can't do this by myself.

I'm broke. My family
doesn't care about me.

My grandma's sick.

I don't mean to dump
this all on you,

but I got nobody else.

You know, I've been taking
classes at the clinic, you know?

I can't give this
baby what it needs.

Could you and Hector take it?

No, I can't. That's impossible.

Why?

Hector and I are
getting divorced.

- What?
- Yeah, we filed the papers.

Now we're just waiting for the
court to make it official.

Look, I know you're
really upset,

but I'm sure you can do this.

I can't.

I can't be a mom. I
can't keep this baby.

_

Well, that's... that's
terrible news, sir.

Colonel Cole was a
hell of a soldier.

Yes, he was...

As were the others
in his humvee.

But the incident has wider
implications, Frank.

For the second time in ten days,

the division has suffered
casualties in a secure area.

CENTCOM has requested
additional troops

to reinforce the division.

You'll be leading First
Brigade back in action.

Roger that, sir.

Immediately.

Ooh-ah.

Come in.

Sir, I've got the
preliminary figures

on the transition
to joint command.

Have a seat, Joan.

You've heard about Colonel Cole?

Yes, sir.

Did you know him?

Personally, no, sir,

but I hear he was an
outstanding leader.

Yeah. He leaves behind
a wife and three kids.

Cole's death means

Sustainment Brigade
needs a new commander,

someone with experience

who can help the brigade
get over the loss.

The army's chosen you.

Me?

I couldn't agree more.

You have done an outstanding
job as Garrison Commander,

and I will sorely miss you,

especially with this
merger in the works,

but this is where the
army needs you now.

Yes, sir.

You'll deploy with
First Brigade.

The next couple days
are gonna go fast.

Roger that.

Normally, becoming
Brigade Commander

is occasion for congratulations.

Under the circumstances,

let me just say, I'm
damn proud of you.

Thank you, sir.

First Brigade is deploying
to Afghanistan.

What?

They need more troops.

Yeah, but you're
not going, right?

Lieutenant Brown's waiting
to be medically cleared.

No, no, no. They can't do this.

You've got your
orders for Tacoma.

I'm not saying it's
gonna happen, Rox.

I'm just saying it could happen.

I haven't reported
to Fort Lewis yet,

and that's my platoon
going overseas.

Your old platoon.

When will you know?

Soon. Brigade's moving
out sometime this week.

Thank you very much.

Yes. That sounds great.

We'll see you on Wednesday.

Who was that?

Uh, the adoption center.

Guess what.

Our first interview
is next week.

A 17-year-old girl
from north Charleston,

four months pregnant.

We'll have to cancel.

You told me Wednesday
night was good.

Nicole?

I'm deploying.

What? When?

This week.

What about adoption?

It'll have to wait.

What are you doing here?

I know it's been a while,

but Penny came to see me today.

What did she want?

I'm giving her money, Gloria...
At least what I can, anyway.

I know, but she needs
more than money, Hector.

She needs help.

What kind of help?

Raising the baby.

She's scared.

Freaked out's more like it.

Look, I know it's a lot,
but once the baby's born,

you think you can help
her look after it?

Agree to joint custody?

What? No.

You're the father.

Gloria, I said I'll
do what I can.

I'm not ready to be a parent.
I wouldn't be good at it.

You gotta learn sometime.

Doesn't matter anyway.

What are you talking about?

Haven't you heard?

The brigade's getting deployed.

I'll be in Afghanistan
in a few days.

You're deploying?

Well, what about your TBI?

The neurologist said another
concussion could kill you.

I've been cleared
for active duty.

You had a traumatic
brain injury, Joan.

Going back into a combat zone?

The doctors consider
it an acceptable risk.

Well, what about the family?

What about David, and
his abandonment issues?

Look, this isn't gonna
be easy for any of us.

I don't deny it.

But David is strong, and
he'll get through this,

because he's got the best dad
in the world to help him.

You know, there are
other options, Joan.

You've put in your 20.

Please...

Let's not go down
that road right now.

I'm not retiring, especially
under the circumstances.

Well, we agreed that the
next move would be mutual.

This isn't a move. The family
is staying where it is.

I'm going where I'm needed.

Right.

To replace a commander who
was killed by an IED.

Yes, that's the job.

And you know I have to go.

But I need you behind me.

I'll miss you every minute.

Hector's deploying.

Even though we're
getting divorced,

I still can't help
worrying about him.

Of course not.

And he's not sure

about this new lieutenant
they got, you know?

Hector really liked Trevor.

He trusted him to get him home.

I'm sure he's gonna be okay.

Yeah. Sergeant Ski's
still with the platoon.

He'll keep 'em safe.

You think?

Everything's so
screwed up right now.

You know Penny, the girl
Hector got pregnant?

She says she can't
keep the baby.

Why?

She says she doesn't
have any support.

Says raising the baby by herself
is gonna ruin the kid's life.

So what's she gonna do?

I don't know. Adoption, I guess.

I feel terrible for
her, but I can't help.

Well, we're all gonna get
through this together.

How?

Well, that's always the
most interesting part.

Attention!

General Clarke.

Welcome to the Wounded
Warrior Center.

I'm Marty Hernandez,

and I've been assigned to
be your physical therapist.

Marty.

Now would you like
to take a tour

of our amazing facility, sir?

No, actually. I'd just
like to get to it.

Awesome.

Well, one of the things I
like to get established

from the very beginning

is that rank has no
meaning in this building.

I used to wear airborne wings,

but now I'm a civilian.

But we all wear the same
badge of distinction here.

Understood.

All right.

Now we have every
piece of equipment

to help you get you
back on your feet.

But the two most important
pieces of equipment...

What's here...

and here.

Everything else is secondary.

Roger that.

Outstanding.

Well, the first
thing we have to do

is come up with a
mission statement.

A what?

Define the objective.

Once we define the objective,

then we can figure out how
we're gonna get there.

Can we just get
to the exercises?

We will.

But it's my house, my rules.

Come in, Lieutenant.

Thank you, sir. I
realize you're busy.

What can I do for you?

I have orders to report

- to 2nd Ranger Battalion next week...
- Uh-huh.

And was wondering if those
orders will be rescinded...

Because of the deployment.

Yes, sir, and Lieutenant
Brown's injury.

He was in a fender bender,
and he tweaked his back.

I'll have to run
it up the chain.

Thank you, sir.

This uncertainty's making
my wife a little nuts.

Roger that.

So I'm assuming your preference
is to report to Fort Lewis?

No, sir. I want to
deploy with my men.

Really?

Does your wife know that?

No, sir.

Well, I'll see what I
can do, Lieutenant.

Dismissed.

Thank you, sir.

Hey, Charlie.

Hey, Denise. Sorry
to bother you.

No, don't be silly. Come on in.

- Thanks.
- Yeah.

Hi, peanut!

Aw.

What's going on?

I know this is way out of line,

and Nicole would kill me if
she knew I was here, but...

But?

I was hoping you could talk
to your husband for me.

Uh, about what?

Nicole.

She's deploying right when we're
starting the adoption process.

If she goes, we're dead in the
water for a year or more,

and you know how
much we want a baby.

I thought maybe you could
talk to Colonel Sherwood

about changing her orders.

Um, I'm sorry, but
that's not gonna work.

Really?

For one thing, I could
never ask Frank that,

and for another, he'd
never agree to it,

and even if he did,

I don't think Nicole would
want to stay behind.

When duty calls,
soldiers respond.

It's what they train for.

I know.

Can't blame a girl for trying.

Mm. Don't be discouraged.

It's kind of hard not to be.

I feel like we have two
strikes against us.

We're a gay couple,
and we're military.

It's gonna be tough
convincing anyone

to give their baby to us.

I think I might be able to help.

We'd like to make this
an open adoption.

That means you could visit,
get to know the baby.

Nicole and I both want that.

You wouldn't be cut out
of the child's life...

If you're comfortable
with that arrangement.

Uh, Charlie and Nicole
want to honor your needs.

Exactly.

They wanna give this baby
all the love it deserves.

We've done a lot
of talking, Penny.

Why don't you say something?

I don't know what to say.

I mean, I never thought
about my child

being raised by two women.

Isn't that, like, against God?

I want my baby to be
raised Christian.

Charlie and I are
both christians.

Yeah, but not...

Go ahead.

You can speak freely here.

I just don't see how y'all
can be real christians

and be gay.

When you told me you
knew a military couple

looking for a baby,

you didn't tell
me they were gay.

Because I wanted you to
get to know 'em first.

A lot of people feel it
shouldn't matter, Penny.

Well, not where I grew up.

I'm sorry.

You seem real nice
and all, but...

I just can't do this.

Would you take me home, please?

Sure.

Let me get this straight...

You want Penny to give our
baby to a couple of lesbians?

They're good people, Hector.

Lesbians?

What difference does it make?

I don't know. Just...

I never thought
about it, I guess.

Look, you gotta see Penny anyway

to sign away your
parental rights.

All I'm asking is, you
get her to reconsider

before your baby
loses a loving home.

Okay.

I'm serious, Hector.

If you just knew how great
these two women are...

Charlie runs the youth
activity center on post,

and Captain Galassini's
an intelligence officer

in your division.

Whoa. Wait a minute.
Captain Galassini?

Why? You know her?

Yeah, I know her. I
didn't know she was gay.

She's the one that saved
our butts in Africa...

The entire squad.

That was her?

Yeah. Bronze Star recipient.

She got us out of what could
have been a nasty firefight.

She wants to raise my kid?

If you and Penny let her.

All right. I'll see
what I can do.

Thank you.

Doing great. Forward.

Good job.

Back.

Awesome. Awesome. Forward again.

How much longer do
we have to do this?

Little while. Lean back.

Can we pick up the pace?

You want to jump out
of planes again, sir,

we have to stick to the program.

- Lean forward.
- This is ridiculous.

I could be doing this
sitting at home.

Your legs are supporting weight

for the first time in weeks,

and you're using your
entire core to stay steady.

You may not be
feeling it now, sir,

but trust me, you will
be feeling it later.

- Lean back.
- I can do a lot more than this right now.

- Negative on that, sir. Lean forward.
- I'm telling you

I can do a lot more
than this right now!

No, no, no! Don't help him, Jim.

The General thinks he can
run his own program.

Let's let him try.

Come on. Get up.

- Okay, come on.
- I got it.

All right. Listen, sir.

You have the balls of a tiger.

But I have the knowledge

that's gonna get you back
out into the jungle,

which is what you
want since day one.

It's what I want as well.

Now are we good to continue?

Affirmative.

Outstanding.

Let's get to work.

- Hey.
- Hey. Sorry I'm late.

Still trying to clear post.
Unbelievable.

Kids are upstairs, and
there's a pizza in the oven.

Okay.

Still no word?

This could be it. It's
Colonel Sherwood.

Lieutenant Leblanc.

Yes, sir.

Roger that. Thank you for
letting me know, sir.

Good night.

Well?

Looks like we're
going to Tacoma.

Yes!

That's... what you
wanted, isn't it?

Yeah. Of course it is.

I'm just gonna go
say hi to the boys.

Okay.

Yes!

Hey.

Hey.

Why don't you put that out
on the dining room table?

Be nice to actually
eat together.

Yes, it would.

Jackie?

Hmm?

Thank you.

For what?

Putting up with me.

What brought this on?

I know I can be stubborn.

But that doesn't mean I
can't learn something new.

I realize, I haven't been
very good at receiving help.

You talking about your legs?

I'm talking about everything.

Just wanted you to know
that besides loving you...

I appreciate you.

Thank you.

I don't want this to get cold.

I still can't believe
you guys did this

with the deployment coming up.

Are you kidding? We couldn't
let you go without a party.

That's right. Claudia
Joy made me promise.

Typical Claudia Joy.

Still pulling strings from
halfway around the world.

Well, I hate to say this,
but I've gotta go.

Not without a little
something first.

Oh, you didn't have to do that.

Open it.

Oh.

Aw.

We all pitched in,

including Pamela
and Claudia Joy.

Oh!

Aw.

I love it. Thank you.

I propose a toast.

No, uh, no. We're not doing that.
Mnh-mnh.

Why not?

Because I don't want to cry.
That's why not.

Roxy...

I'm serious.

It's never gonna be
the same, you know?

It's your first PCS.

You never think it's
gonna be as good,

but it will be, over time.

Unh-unh.

I'm not buying it. I'm sorry.

I'll never find a
better bunch of friends

than the ones I'm
looking at right now.

Roland...

You changed my life.

I don't know what
I would have done

without your advice
over the years.

You hate my advice, Rox.

It's because you're
usually right.

And you.

You're like the big
sister I never had.

I owe you so much.

You don't owe me anything.

Okay, how come I'm the
only one crying right now?

No, you are not.

Only two ways to
deal with this...

Laughter or tears.

Wrong. There is another way.

Come here.

You sign at the bottom there.

Yeah. Okay.

Listen, Penny,

I think Captain Galassini
and her partner

would make really good parents.

I really don't want
to talk about that.

Why not?

Hector, those women are sinners.

Well, what does that make us?

I mean, we didn't exactly
get into this situation

by being saints.

It's different.

How is it different?

What we did is
against the Bible.

You condemn them, you
gotta condemn us.

Please just sign the form.

You met them.

Do they seem like bad people?

No.

But what kind of values are
they gonna teach our child?

Look, I can't speak for Charlie.
I never met her.

But Captain Galassini...
She's awesome.

She's smart. She's brave.

She saved lives,
Penny, including mine.

I think we can trust
her with our kid.

All right. Forward.

There we go. Back.

Forward again.

Then back again. You know what?

- Let's take a break.
- Ohh.

There you go. Take a sip.

Feeling good.

You should be feeling good,

'cause you're
stepping it up today.

We got you a... Got you a gift.

There you go, sir.

What's this?

It goes back to your
mission statement.

You said you wanted to stand up
to watch your soldiers deploy,

and that's gonna help you.

No, no worry. There's...
It's only short term,

and there's no
shame in using it,

but you can't achieve
the mission without it.

Thank you.

I'm waiting.

What?

You want me to stand up now?

Unless you have
something better to do.

Hey. I'm not gonna let
you fall, all right?

I got you. Come on, sir.

Don't be afraid to put all
that weight on the cane.

And use your core.

That's what we've been doing all
the exercises for... Your core.

You got this, sir.

There you go. There you go.

Come on. You got it.
You got it, sir.

There you go. There...
there you go.

- Good...
- Oh. Damn it.

Hey. Hey. Doing well, sir.

Now you've got a feel for it.

What do you say? You up for it?

Are you kiddin'?

Ha ha! Come on. Let's do it.

You got it. Get up there.

Aah!

Now that was a
hell of an effort.

Good job. Good job.

Army strong!

We got your six, sir!

Ooh-ah!

Thank you, gentlemen.

That's what it's about, Marty.

I'm gonna walk again...

For them.

Never any doubt, sir.

Can I come in?

Please.

You gotta understand.

I grew up in a Christian home.

I mean, at least that's
what we called it.

Though it didn't stop my daddy
from hitting me and my brother.

I don't know.

Maybe if my parents had
been better christians,

my life wouldn't be this way.

Anyway, the point is,

you both seem real nice.

And I can tell you both
really love each other.

And I hope that means that
you'll love this baby, too.

Penny?

I want you to raise my baby.

How long will you be gone?

Well, I'm not sure, honey.
It could be up to a year.

A year?

Well, I know it sounds
like a long time,

but we can e-mail and Skype.

Who's gonna help me
with my homework?

Hey, dude, I'm still here.

But what about math?

Mom is really good at math.

I can give your
father some pointers.

But you're gonna miss
my basketball games.

And you said we were gonna go
to Disney World this summer.

Well, your father
can still take you.

It's not the same.

No, it's not.

But we all need to help
each other through this.

I don't want you to go.

- I have to go, David.
- Why?

It's my job.

Well, that's a bad job.

No.

It's a very good job.

It just comes with a
price, that's all.

It's like being a police officer

or a firefighter, David.

We depend on special
people to protect us.

And your mom's one of
those special people.

But what if you die?

I'm not going to die.

What if you do?

You have to promise
you'll come back.

Promise you'll come back and
everything will be okay.

I promise.

What do you think?

- Cool!
- Isn't it?

Hector!

Hey.

I couldn't let you go
without saying good-bye.

Thanks.

Besides, I wanted you to
meet Charlie and Nicole.

Ma'am.

At ease.

- I understand we
worked together

in Africa. - Yes, ma'am.

Well, it's nice to meet
under better circumstances.

Yes, it is.

Thank you for letting
us adopt your child.

Well, you really gotta
thank Gloria for that.

She's the one that
made it happen.

You had to agree to it.

We want you to know that
once the baby's born,

you can visit whenever you want.

Thank you.

Yeah. You just gotta
come home first.

Both of you.

Right.

See you in theater.

Yes, ma'am.

- Nice to meet you.
- Likewise.

Well, I should go.

You stay safe, Hector.

I mean it. Don't do
anything stupid.

Well, it's not really
your problem anymore.

Hey, just because we're
getting divorced,

doesn't mean I don't
care about you.

Okay.

Is it okay if I write you?

Sure.

Go.

I've never seen you off before.

Not like this.

I don't know what to say.

You don't have to say anything.

Uh...

Well, that makes
it an even dozen.

Wait.

Thank you, princess.

You take good care of
your mom for me, okay?

Daddy loves you.

I love you.

I love you, too.

Joan. Roland.

Sir. How you doing, David?

Good, sir.

And how's my goddaughter?

She's good, thanks.

She doesn't know what's
going on, really.

I think you're gonna have to
help her with this deployment.

I will, sir.

Good.

Good luck. Be safe over there.

Thank you, sir.

I'm around if you need anything.

Appreciate that.

Carry on, Colonel.

Yes, sir.

Bye, baby girl.

Don't get too big
while I'm gone, okay?

Mwah.

I have to go now.

I know.

Remember everything
we talked about.

Help out at home.
Don't worry about me.

Mom'll be safe.

I want to give you something.

Don't forget me.

'Course not.

I love you.

I love you, too.

We're gonna be fine.

- I'll call.
- Okay.

Okay, guys. Take your last look.

Bye.

Fort Lewis, here we come.

That's everything.

4 boys, one dog, 3,000 miles.
You ready?

Yeah. But can we take
the long way out?

Absolutely.

Okay. Road trip.
