who would give him a sense

of how very ridiculous
it is to be fuddled.

So great is the vivacity, the curiosity,

the love of novelty and the
want of caution at a tender age.

So lively is the sympathy,
so active the spirit

of imitation, that even
occasional intercourse

with dangerous companions will seldom fail

to be highly injurious.

I once was for several weeks
with a foreigner of very fair

natural abilities, but never
subjected to the disciplines

of early study, who would often arrive

at his own conclusions by a kind of jump.

but produced by a sort
of theatrical exhibition

and especially his pupils
of the female gender,

whose natural volatility
most needs this discipline.
