All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur (2020–…): Season 1, Episode 4 - Season's Greetings - full transcript

It's Christmas, and Head Coach José Mourinho faces his first major challenge at the club. A growing injury list means he must turn to the club's Academy and is forced to re-think his team selection.

The first question is,
"how many of you won the FA Cup?"

And I know the answer.

You all want to win the FA Cup.

The next point is,
what you are ready to do

to win the FA Cup?

To win the FA Cup,
you need a lot.

And to win against these teams
is not easy.

They are coming aggressive.

For sure, they are coming
for the game of their life.

They are going to kick you.

They are going to bang you.

We need to take this game very serious

or we are fucked.

We are out.

A new era begins for Tottenham Hotspur.

The most important thing...

Courage.

Honesty.

Family.

Listen to Tottenham Hotspur's
stadium now.

Let's go together, boys.
Come on!

- Daniel, good to see you.
- How are you?

José Mourinho's here.

Daniel, here's the microphone.

We all want Christmas presents.

I asked Father Christmas
for one or two.

To finish in the top four.

And win a trophy.

For Tottenham Hotspur,
Christmas is a busy time...

Merry Christmas!

...with messages for fans,

visits to the local community,

and also preparation
for an intense number of matches

over the festive period.

Now, there's a third muscle along...

It's also the busiest time of year
for the team of ten full time physios

who work under Geoff Scott.

Our responsibility is to the player,

but there's always pressure.

It always feels like,
even with one injured player,

that's the player they want the most.

We don't want you running
until you can hop,

we'll work in the pool
and get you hopping.

When you've got an injured player

and you've got to be careful
around an injury,

but you're pushing them
to that high level.

It's very difficult.

And stressful
because the last thing we want

is our players to break down.

Morning, boss.

Just from the games,
there were two problems.

So, Dier got that heavy challenge
on the inside of his foot.

That's quite bruised today,
he cannot hop.

So...

It should settle
because it's a bruise,

but we have to see
over the next day or so.

Maybe it's very quick.

And Rose, in the game, nothing.

But he did the box-to-box
running after

and he was aware of his calf muscle.

Again, pain on hopping,
showing signs of a calf problem.

So, we need to just investigate.

And, obviously,
Kyle Walker-Peters, yesterday...

Kyle Walker-Peters.

Rose.

- Eric Dier.
- Dier.

Davies.

So, we have ten players.

- Thank you very much.
- OK.

The injury list is growing,

and with Heung-Min Son
suspended for three games,

José is lacking players.

It’s fucked.

Walker-Peters is injured.

Danny Rose, they say as well.

Carlos said he doesn’t know
if he trains today or not.

Are there any kids?

There may be three.

Where are they?

Three players have been called up
to join the first team.

They've all come through
Tottenham's football academy,

considered to be
one of the best in world.

Whenever this happens,
it's down to kitman Steve Dukes

to create some space in the Boot Room.

I started off at the club
as a steward in 1987.

I've been here quite a long time,

part of the furniture.

- Alright, treacle? How are you?
- You OK?

The Academy side's on one side,

and the first team's
on this side.

All the players, Harry Kane,

Winksy, Kyle Walker-Peters...

They've all been round there.

Like some of these lot.
Here you are...

- Harv, how long you been here?
- Ten years.

- Ten years. What age?
- Like, under eights.

- And, you've just come?
- Yeah, yeah, recently.

- From where?
- Notts County.

- Notts County.
- Yeah.

The academy boys come up as scholars.

Seeing them grow up,
you sort of grow towards them.

And sometimes you actually do feel like
they're one of your own as well.

So basically,
we've had three young lads from the 23s.

They're gonna be moved to
the first team dressing room

with the senior players.

For the young lads
who've come through the academy,

it's massive because they've been here
since they were young kids.

So, to come through the ranks

and get into the first team is huge.

One of the players selected by José

is 20 year old defender Japhet Tanganga

who was just nine when he joined the club.

He still lives with his mum and dad
less than two miles from the stadium.

This is important to me and I need
to concentrate and be disciplined.

I still got a long way to go.

A lot of people don't know this,
but I got scouted by Chelsea first.

So yeah, got scouted by Chelsea,

had a few trials there.

And I came from my local club,
Edmonton All Stars,

which is not far from the stadium,
like down the road.

For me to be working under
the best manager in the world,

it doesn't get any better than that.

You've got to compose yourself,
you cannot show that...

that you're some kind of fan.

You have to be like, "Oh no."

He doesn't know my capabilities,

but I have the opportunity to give him
a good example of myself.

And show what I'm capable of doing.

Come on a bit of quality, guys.
Come on.

When a player
comes from the youth pathway,

and grew up in the club having a dream,

I think these kids,
when they come to the first team,

they have something.
They have passion.

These emotional things
are very, very important.

OK. I press.
I control the space.

It's a big transition, I'd say.

You have to understand that
there are players ahead of you

doing this week in, week out,

have more experience, but

you can't let that affect you.
It's out of your hands.

Birthday boy!

It's five thirty in the evening
on Christmas Day,

time for the team to report for training.

You see these guys more than your family
so you kind of get used to it, but...

Do you give each other presents?

- The team mates?
- Yeah.

I don't think so.
I haven't seen anyone.

- There's no Secret Santa?
- No, I don't think so.

That would be good too.

in just seven days,

the players are still in festive mood.

to be a difficult time.

yeah, I would be at home.

Because all my family, they are in London,

and they came over from Paris,

but because
we have a game tomorrow so,

it will not be possible
for me to do it with them, but, yeah.

I will do it tomorrow so

Kane shoots.
It wasn't far away from Harry Kane.

And Ings does score for Southampton.

Need a goal soon, Spurs,

if they do have ambitions
to win this one.

Oh, and I wonder if Harry Kane
has got a hamstring issue here.

Harry Kane, he's one of our own,

he's one of our own,
he's one of our own,

Harry Kane, he's one of our own.

Spurs lose the game one-nil.

But it's the loss of
their captain to injury

which is of far greater significance.

Everything that could go wrong
went wrong

and if Harry Kane is out injured,
that could be a big, big problem for us.

We're reliant on Harry Kane.

When we rely on Harry
for the seasons we do,

it's impossible to think
he can just carry on...

We have to have
a decent striker on the bench, at least.

It's 48 hours
after Harry Kane's injury,

and fears mount over
just how serious it is.

- Have you seen him?
- We left him at home.

He's having a scan now,
so we'll know this morning.

So, we'll have to see,
but fingers crossed.

If it's not on the tendon
then it's not as bad.

Well, hopefully,

but he left on crutches
in quite a lot of pain so...

- Is he still in pain now?
- I think so. I think it's uncomfortable.

But he left on crutches,
which is something you don't often see

in the lower grade injuries.

Obviously, I had an injury at the start.

Your heart just sinks, because you know,
I couldn't even stand on it.

"What's gonna happen next?"

"How long will I be out for?"

It's the worst feeling, I think.

The medical team are waiting
for the results of Harry's scan.

Sorry, here's Gajan.

Hi, Gajan.

Yeah, not too bad, mate.
How about you?

OK, you've seen it already?

It's definitely a C injury
as it involves the inter muscular tendon.

And the muscle's lost significant tension
so it's a high three C.

Oh, no. OK.

OK. So it's probably
about 12 weeks or something like that.

OK. Cheers, mate.

Oh, my God.

It's very close to being a total
so it could be surgical.

I think he wants to show you pictures.

It's definitely not the old grade one
that you were playing with.

I don't think so.

How you doing? Yeah, sit down.

Harry it's not good news.

I think you can probably feel
it's a big strain.

- Right, yeah.
- So this is basically as bad as it gets.

We will get you to see a specialist,

so a surgeon
who specialises in hamstrings,

but some of these
become surgical cases.

It's really rare, but the surgeon
has to make that decision.

And, you know, it's pretty substantial
amount of bleeding and substantial tear.

OK.

When it happened,
I felt like a pop in my hamstrings.

But I've never had
a muscle injury before, so

I knew I'd done something,
but I didn't realise how...

whether it was that bad.

Some of that tendon has gone.

It's difficult to accept,
but it's something that you can't control.

I think the scary thing
is that it goes so quick.

The seasons go so quick.
The time goes so quick.

I'm 27 in the summer
and it feels like I started last year.

That's the thing when you're so non-stop,
you don't have time to process it all

and it's like, on the next one and
all of a sudden you're getting to 32, 33,

and you're thinking,
"I ain't got too long left."

If there's no surgery needed
and it goes well,

it's about 12 weeks, so long.

OK? So, sorry about that, mate.

You kind of see the look on their faces
when they get something.

The pain's one thing,
but they are devastated, you know?

They know they're going to be taken away

from the thing they love
more than anything.

When they know
they're gonna be out for months,

it's a difficult time for them.

Got nothing and then, bam.

Especially, I’m telling you,
It’s because of the schedule.

The schedule is crazy.

How many injuries have we had?
Not just us, every club.

- Seventy five injuries, apparently.
- In the Premier League?

Moussa has a good injury as well.

- Moussa?
- Yeah.

It will be a...
It could be a while.

A knee injury to midfielder
Moussa Sissoko in the same game

has left José
with even fewer players to choose from.

Tell me, tell me.

Harry Kane's scan's come back
and it almost can't be worse.

They think there's some fibres there.

So, we will get
our specialist to look at it.

Some of them, we've never had one,
but some of them do have surgery.

But we would hope this one is not.

We'll have to speak to him.

It's a very high-grade strain.

But we are speaking about a long time?

If there's no surgery
then about twelve weeks.

Come on, it's a joke.
That's end of season.

OK. Change the side, boys.

Three months.

Minimum... minimum.

Three months if he doesn’t have surgery.

Three months out.

We’re fucked.

José must now deal with the loss
of five first team players through injury.

Harry Kane, I think he's irreplaceable,

but we have to try solutions.

If you go through our squad.

No, Danny Rose. No, Hugo Lloris.

No, Harry Kane.

When you say, "No, no, no, no..."

You have to say, "Skipp, Tanganga,
and Parrott and the young boys in."

Yes, Tanga!

Young players,
if they are in the right frame of mind,

they bring something
that I used to call fear to the others,

but it's a fear
that I love to have in the squad,

which is, they become
competitive team mates,

and this is very, very important.

So, Japh... Japha.
When you gonna sign your contract?

Who, me?

I don't know, man.

- That means he knows.
- I actually don't.

- You know that.
- I don't know.

Ask him.

I love football and I know with football,
you get a lot of rewards if you do well.

I just want to use
those rewards to help my family

and repay them back.

You know,
just how much they've helped me,

how much they've sacrificed for me.

My dad, he would miss work
to drop me at training.

He would come to games
where it's snowing,

it's raining, it's cold.

My mum's not the same,
she doesn't come to a lot of games,

but just how she helps me
at home and how she always teaches me.

You know, say I don't have a good game,

she always knows how to cheer me up.

She always knows
how to put me back in a good mood.

And I'm grateful for both of them.

I just wanna be able
to repay that back for them,

so that's the pressure
I put on myself.

So, when it contracts,
you know now when it goes, "shhh,"

I want you to think about
contracting here.

- As well?
- Yeah.

Have we seen shape
for the team tomorrow?

There's a Japhet call,
Japhet at right-back call.

Serge on the right-wing.

The squad for Tottenham's next fixture
has just been announced.

Just a few weeks ago,
local boy Japhet Tanganga

was playing for the under-23s.

He's now been selected
for his Premier League debut

against runaway leaders Liverpool.

My dad was in the kitchen
and he was just speaking to me,

"Japh, this is a big day.

It's a very big day.
This is like your opportunity to

stamp your mark
in the world of football."

Then as soon as I get to my room,
it just hit me.

It's like, "Oh my days, I'm about to make
my Premier League debut."

I've waited
for this opportunity for so long.

I just started crying a bit.

And then I had to just sort myself out.

"OK, I've got to sort myself out now.
I've got a game."

Number 27, Lucas Moura.

And, number 39, Japhet Tanganga.

Oh, we've got the line-up.

- Gazzaniga, Aurier, Tangan...
- Winks rather than Dier.

Tanganga.

Two-one Mané I reckon.

Two-one Mané. Sorry, scouser here.

How you doing? Alright, fella?

- Turn it off.
- Forgot about that.

To play against Liverpool,

shouldn't be a normal thing.

There are things in our career,

in my case, I have moments
in my career that I don't forget,

for good and for bad.

And when I have the opportunity

to face these ghosts of my career,

I... I just want to do it.
You need to believe.

You really need
to be happy to play the game.

of the task here for Spurs,

Liverpool are unbeaten
in 371 days of Premier League football.

And I'm not quite sure
how that's gone wide.

Tottenham lose one-nil.

With this loss, Spurs
have now slipped to eighth in the table,

nine points behind Chelsea in fourth.

- Hey, Japha. Unbelievable.
- Well done, Japha.

But a promising second half display

and strong performance
from new boy Tanganga

means the team
can take some positives from this defeat.

You were good then.

Believe me. You did very well.

Right, top three chocolate bars.

Oh, Dime, Drifter...

Oh, Drifter!

Dime? It breaks your teeth.

Oh, Dime.

Dime, Drifter and Crunchie.

Crunchies are in my top three as well.

- Curly Wurly's up there.
- No, it's too chewy, man.

Toffee Crisp, I like Toffee Crisp.

- You eat chocolate bars?
- If anyone puts Bounty in their top three,

- Bounty's disgusting.
- ...I'm never speaking to you again.

-You OK?

Tottenham can now put
the league to one side

as they begin their FA Cup campaign,

arguably the club's best opportunity
for a trophy this season.

We are going to play
every minute of the FA Cup

with the maximum potential
that we have... available,

with the passion
the FA Cup itself demands,

with the passion the fans demand.

The history they have.
The memories...

The FA Cup is a very,
very special cup.

The FA Cup is the oldest
cup competition in world football.

Tottenham have won the trophy eight times.

And scored one of the most iconic goals
in FA Cup final history.

Villa...

And still Ricky Villa...

What a fantastic run!

He scored!

Amazing goal by Ricky Villa.

As a teenager,
the Ricardo Villa goal,

I was in my house with my dad,

and, of course, I don't forget.

So, I imagine
what it means for the Tottenham fans.

We have to play this cup seriously.

Spurs are drawn against Middlesbrough,

a team from the division below.

I think they can beat us.

Honestly, I think they can beat us.

Because, for sure,
they are coming aggressive.

For sure, they are coming
for the game of their life.

They are physical, they are tall,
they have nothing to lose.

They are coming with everything.

They know that they can do it.

We have to play very well.

I give...

our two strikers to three guys,

I promise you that
they are going to have a hard time.

I promise you.

You are better.
You have mobility. You have speed.

You can fuck them.

But the principle of the game is that
they are going to give you a hard game.

Their first game was a draw,

so tonight, it's a replay

to see who progresses to the next round.

It's a big game. It's a must...
It's a big game.

I've been coming here since 1959.

It's the magic of it,
it's the magic of it.

It's when you first
got interested in football as a kid.

It was the FA Cup.

We'd love to win the FA Cup.

- And the Premier League.
- Silverware has gotta be a priority.

I had so many sleepless nights.

There's so many things
that could go well in this game,

but there's so many things
that could go wrong.

You know, I have aspirations...
dreams to do it at 16, 17,

but it's taken me,
you know, until I'm 20.

It's an opportunity that if I play well,

like, my life can change from here.

Good evening, welcome to Tottenham...

Tottenham Hostpur's stadium
hosts FA Cup football for the first time.

Come on you Spurs.

We need to be ready.

To fight, we need to fight,
but we need to play.

We need to play and kill them by playing.

Lo Celso... who takes over.

Lo Celso!

Spurs lead in the opening minutes.

Fletcher is a striker
and he has a good movement.

Mark the man.

And don't accept the cross,
try to stop the cross.

Away by Tanganga.

Lamela will go this alone here
to score for two-nil.

That is top class from Erik Lamela

back in the starting eleven tonight.

Goals from Argentinian pair
Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso

see Tottenham take a two-nil lead,

but it's a far lesser known player
who steals the headlines.

Tanganga, look at the space here.

Tanganga!

Tanganga, lovely touch.

Oh, he's done superbly well here.

What a fine run from the young defender.

In towards Dele Ali
and Son nearly got there too.

Japhet Tanganga,
what a performance tonight!

Well, the Spurs fans love him.

Tottenham Hotspur move
into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Four games, we haven't had a win,

today we finally got a win,
we're through.

Japhet, you look like you're loving life

at Spurs at the moment.
Two straight starts

and you are
the man of the match.

I'm just grateful
for the gaffer for trusting me.

You know, I'm just taking,
hopefully, each game as it comes.

Hopefully he
picks me for the next game,

when he picks me I'm ready.

Honestly, I'm enjoying it.
The fans are lovely.

The stadium's brilliant, I love it.

You are the man of the match.

Erik, could you do the honours for me?

- Congratulations.
- Thank you.

Tanganga!

Tanganga. Tanganga!

That week for me was just amazing.

Just how things just changed so suddenly.

Did you know
you would get man of the match?

No. I thought... to be fair...

I thought maybe
if we got two-nil then, yeah.

They scored, I thought they might
give it to an attacking player,

but after I saw, I was talking
to a Middlesbrough player,

I played with him at England.

He said, "You've won man of the match."

I was very excited.

If Tanganga gets a run of games,

he could do something in centre-back.

He was amazing.

The way he just started
and he just smashed it.

So yeah, big up.

José Mourinho has uncovered
a potential star for the future,

but just as one arrives,
the transfer window opening

means he may have to deal
with the loss of others.

I was just now with Eriksen.

He told me that, by the end of the season,

he knows that, free contract,

he knows that, by the end
of the season he’ll be gone.

He said, "I don’t have anything.

In my head,
I would like to leave now."

So, I was thinking
about the Christian situation.

For a club of our size,
to allow a player to leave here on a free,

is a very bad signal to everybody else.

The issue for us today is
we have to try and find some solutions.

- Almost done, or what?
- I hope so.

First match is Man City.

Well, things are heating up.

The story of football is that
the teams of good guys,

they never win.

So fucking hell! Be a.

A dream goal!

Steven Bergwijn
has arrived in North London.
