because, uh, we wanted them
to have the opportunity to say

they thanks to not only
their parents,

they school,
or to whoever it may have been.

But I tell you this,
with all three of them,

they have already completed
all assignments of graduatin' early.

So, I think that deserves more
of a recognition than anything.

Speakin' individually to all of them

and their parents this week,

I'm most proud of their character.

From what they were told
they couldn't do,

from what they told
they weren't able to accomplish,

they've accomplished everything.

They are different kind of champions.

They're champions of life.

These three young men exemplify character.

Not only at Edna Karr High School,

but the city of New Orleans
and the state of Louisiana.

So, I just wanna say publicly,
listen, I love these three.

If I had my own children,
they would be the prime example

of what you want
your child to be.

Courageous, available,
accountable, and authentic.

So, I love y'all
from the bottom of my heart.

And I'm very proud of y'all,

even though I know
we fell short of our goal.

But like I said at the end
of our game,

champions cannot be measured by winnin'
state championship games.

and this mom who's still mournin'
her child's loss, right?

And then you have this other side

where he's being immortalized.

had a big early signin' day

because they all graduated

Then just out the blue,
I get a phone call from Brice.

He told me that he think
Keyron had been shot

and that

he was on the way
to the hospital and,

and we would know more soon.

Karr school leaders
and students are heartbroken

as they deal with the loss
of yet another student

to gun violence.

REPORTER: 18-year-old Keyron Ross
was a scholar athlete at Edna Karr,

a member of the football team
and the baseball team.

His coach and other school leaders
describe him

as full of energy and dedicated
to school and to sports.

Keyron was a great kid,
had a infectious personality.

He was a part of the program
for three years.

He was gonna be
the startin' defensive end

for this year's upcomin' team.

What the fuck happened?

I know.

I feel like that's what my,

to reach somebody's child.

He always said that he was
gonna be a better father

to his son than his daddy ever was to him.

BRICE: And that's why he tried so hard,
because he knew

he was gonna have
to start teachin' somebody else.

MAKITA:

That was last Thanksgiving.

in this type of situation.

we come from,

very successful people

that are still with us

Keyron would've been right here

in the stands, smilin', jokin', laughin'

and havin' fun
right along with his brothers.

that he always wanted to see

One of the mentally toughest kids
I've ever been around, Tory Morgan.

And I, I go to graduation
just to see it every year.

My name is Coach Brice Brown,

and I represent
the Bill Robinson Committee

on the Student Athletes of the Year.

This year's male recipient
may come to no surprise to many,

but what may surprise you
is his ability to show humility

when the lights and success
shine brightest on him.

Athletics is the bridge
that brought this recipient

to heights he has never seen.

If you ask me,

from Algiers to Tuscaloosa

doesn't seem that far at all.

It is my honor to, to present to you

the Bill Robinson
Male Student Athlete of the Year.

You may know him as Deuce,

but we at Edna Karr High School

know him as Aaron Anderson.

Aaron is also receivin'
a $500 scholarship in his name.

Aaron Anderson has
outstanding character.

At one point, people thought
he was gonna go left,

but then he figured it out
and corrected himself

and went on that path

to bein' probably
one of the best receivers,

not only in, in Karr history
but in this-- in the history of the state.

With him, you just reflect on, "Man,

this kid came a long fucking way."

Tygee is very authentic.

He's very comfortable in his own skin.

He didn't let football define him.

It wasn't that he didn't love football.

It's that he knew himself.

who are ill and elderly,

I would think the whole arena
should stand up

when his name is called at graduation.

replace a player like that.

I don't know if it's possible.

it was somethin' special
about 'em from day one.

always been my plan,

so now that I achieved my goal,
