I'm not the only one got shot.
One of my other friends got shot.
Two in, uh, in the calf.

It's, like, 20 shots went off,
somethin' like that.
Twenty to 30, somethin' like that.
- He called me on the phone.
He like, "Coach, I just got shot."
All right, "Boy, your ass
better call the police."
You know what he said?

Sports is a way out of New Orleans.
Feel what I mean?
I know I grew up in New Orleans,
but I don't really like New Orleans.
I want, I wanna go somewhere else.

REPORTER 1: Hurricane Ida,
getting bigger, getting stronger.
REPORTER 2: Current forecast
makes it a major hurricane front
and category three,
115-mile-per-hour winds.
- We are, literally,
a few hours away from a landfall
o-of an extremely catastrophic storm.
A category four,
150-miles-per-hour is the latest.
We're goin' to take
a direct hit from this storm.

You cannot evacuate any longer.
This weather is gonna happen very quickly.
We're going to have
significant hurricane impact.
The time to evacuate is over.
REPORTER 3: Nearly a million people
are without power in New Orleans.
REPORTER 4: It is going to be
multiple days before the grid is restored.

It's summertime in Louisiana.
It's gonna get hot.
People are going to be suffering.
REPORTER 5:
With the heat index expected to soar
above 100 degrees for yet another day,
places like New Orleans are melting.

It came down some more.

Computer. That's it. I'm ready.
Initially, nobody thought
it was gonna be... as bad.
Preliminary reports stated that
it was gonna hit west of the city,
but it shifted east towards the city.
The storm was so big,
the winds were very widespread,
so it knocked out power.
- A month.
A month.
This is gon' really
tax people, financially.

You know, we couldn't
contact... a lot of them
because the service
began to, to fail
with, with phones.
So, we hadn't had
contact with the team
since that Friday.

We're gon' do a Zoom meetin',
um, probably a little later tonight.
KELLS: All right.

- So, I'm guessin', Jawin,
with y'all situation,
did y'all get, uh,
water in the house?
- Yeah.
- Yeah. Your situation
a little bit different
because the street
you was on was all messed up.
TOMICA: Ooh.

Because all the hotels in New Orleans,
they say they not takin', uh, FEMA.

If, if Jawin didn't have to go to school,
if this wasn't his last year,
he didn't have to go to school, I'd leave.
I really would leave.
All I got do is just
wait for him to graduate,
and just, just wait.
And just, soon as he graduates, just go.
I'll leave everything and just go.

I'm done with New Orleans.
This is ridiculous.
TORY:
The day before the hurricane,
my pop was like, "We gotta go,"
because we had to look at, you know,
how gon' be able to, you know,
take care of my family in this situation.
So, um, we made a tough decision.
Well, really we thought we
was gon' ride out the storm,
but we had think
about the circumstances,
you know, especially
my grandma with oxygen, so--
- We then really made
the decision together.
TORY: Yeah, we really made
the decision together.
We felt like it was gon' be best,
especially with the power bein' out.
- If it was my decision,
we would still be home.
I'm a diehard. I-I'm a diehard.
[grandfather talking]
I been through
Betsy, Katrina, everybody.
GRANDFATHER: Yeah, well, ask Tory--
- What? When?
GRANDFATHER: Not to cut you off.
Ask Tory what me and him said.
Huh, Tory?
- W-Well, they overruled.
- She was goin' and we would've
had to carry her out of there.
- I would've rode it out with me,
but I-I gotta look out for her, you know,
make sure she's straight,
make sure, you know,
her circumstances straight
'cause her circumstances
are my circumstances, so--

- Any time there's a storm or a hurricane,
we have power outages,
so we ain't wanna be without power
for two, two weeks to a month.
So, instead of that, we just evacuate,
uh, not too far, just a five-hour drive,
and be safe.
The day before the storm,
we realized it was gonna be
a category four or five.
And just--
I say you had a sense of panic.
You know, just comin' home,
and packin' your bags,
and just knowin', like,
we might not come home to a home.

Some teammates don't even have lights.
Some of my teammates don't have
a home to go to, you know?
Don't even have a roof
over their own room,
like, the roof is gone,
uh, major flooding.
Like, just havin' to find a new home.
It still a sense of reality
when you see stuff like that,
and just knowin', like,
everybody wasn't as blessed as me.

[indistinct chatter on TV]
- I hope everybody good
in dealin' with these circumstances.
You know, I-I talked
to a good bit of y'all individually.
Keyron probably snuck in
on the slot machine while he was in Vegas.
Keyron, that left tackle
from center are gon' pancake you.
Stop talkin' all that shit.
[chuckling]
Will we miss a week,
or two, or three from football?
Probably so.
Now... does that mean it's gonna stop you
from achieving your ultimate goal?
Either graduating
from Edna Karr High School
or winnin' the state championship
with Edna Karr High School?
That is not gon' stop that.
The most important thing
that I'm concerned about,
at this point, is our mental wellness,
and, you know, startin' tomorrow,
we gon' have our checks
with, uh, your coaches.
BRICE:
All right, Coach Norman will pray us out.
NORMAN [through computer]:
Yep. Dear Heavenly Father,
we come here givin' you thanks and praise.
Once again, we ask that you protect
and look over everybody--
I think Ida scared us more than
it should've, but it was PTSD.
I really feel like a lotta
people have that.
Ida reminded you so much
of Hurricane Katrina.
These kids were young.
I don't even think
they were old enough to even realize
what was really goin' on
if they were in a good foundation.
But, like, Jawin, he was in a Superdome.
Can you imagine those conditions
for a one-, two-year-old?
DAVID: Here in Algiers,
the biggest thing since Katrina
is I don't know how much
of our neighborhoods
really ever came back.
We have people living in them.
Doesn't feel the same.
They just not that,
that, that same spirit.
It's not--
It's much less like a neighborhood now,
and it's more just like
a place where people live.
NORMAN:
The Lower Ninth Ward got flooded.
So, a lot of those people who
didn't rebuild or had they home bought
moved where?
They moved over to the West Bank,
where it didn't flood.
It didn't flood in the West Bank.
It didn't flood in Algiers.
And so, the gun violence
and Katrina's totally related
because it put everybody
in different spots
than where they should be.
In New Orleans,
it's all about where you from.
It's not about gangs.
We say, "Where you from?"
"I'm from uptown. I'm from downtown."
"I'm from the East."
"I'm from the West Bank."
Right? And those things can have,
dependin' on where you at
and who you're in front of,
can mean a lot.
That turns into hostility.
That turns into bein' territorial.
You're on the wrong side of town,
which turns into fights.
When fights, who lose, turns into what?
Guns, or calling your family.
And who comes over there? More guns.
And then that's how violence turns.
And Katrina did that, nothin' else.
DR. WYATT: Katrina was just nasty.
Katrina was life-changing.
And we're still, what,
16 years post-Katrina,
and we're still trying to,
still trying to recover.
So, I think Ida was
just, like, another blow.
But we are resilient bunch of people.
And so, just like that,
our kids, I guess,
were born into resiliency.

I know it has been a tough time,
you know, dealin'
with not bein' able to play.
A’ight? So, look, I'm a firm believer
in takin' life how it come.

- When we first got back
together after the hurricane,
it was, um, it was refreshin'
to see everybody back.
But... durin' that practice,
the backup quarterback
was doin' a three-step drop,
and the ball was behind him.
So, AJ tried to swipe
the ball outta the way,
and his finger wind up
gettin' jammed in the turf.
So, when you lose
a quarterback like that,
it's not like you have another one
that's right behind him.
Like, this the startin' quarterback,
he knows everything.
Literally, everything. [laughs]
So, you know, when that happened,
it was like, "Aw, shit." Right?
It was a ruptured ligament in his thumb,
and, um... it requires surgery.
He had to start all over.
AJ: It's like bein' a kid,
like not knowin' how to do nothin'.
I do my therapy and all that
with my thumb and all that.
Sometimes, I second-guess myself.
It's like... being reborn,
havin' to learn everything all over again.
[ball bouncing]
The work that we be doin', like,
of course, when you're not hurt,
you could do everything.
But just doin' that
made me realize that I'm still hurt.

BRICE: On top of AJ,
the season was affected
because we lost two games
to Hurricane Ida.
I think for the kids,
the toughest thing
for them was... not knowing.
Not knowin' what was next.
Not knowing if they were
gonna have a season.
So, we immediately tried
to find a open-week opponent.
One night, we were watchin'
Friday Night Football,
and Coach J.T. Curtis said
he was lookin' for a game.
I text him durin'
the live broadcast and said,
"We're lookin' for a game, too."
And Coach J.T. called me
first thing the next mornin'.

Him and Aaron was tight.
And then to see Aaron go
on this path that he's goin' on
is the fortunate part.
But that's just a part
of growin' up in New Orleans.

Tonka, he got shot and killed
two blocks down the street
from his house.
He sacrificed his life
in order to save a life.
He wore number five,
so five is a big number here.
We give that to the person
who best represents sacrifice.
It's called Long Live Five Day.

Tonka was what we want our children
to do, is that succeed.
You know, you want them to graduate.
You want them to go on to college.
You want them to persevere.
What we want you to do
is what Tonka didn't get the chance to do,
and that's to live out

the biggest thing since Katrina
is I don't know how much
of our neighborhoods
really ever came back.
We have people living in them.
Doesn't feel the same.
They just not that,
that, that same spirit.
It's not--
It's much less like a neighborhood now,
and it's more just like
a place where people live.

The Lower Ninth Ward got flooded.
So, a lot of those people who
didn't rebuild or had they home bought
moved where?
They moved over to the West Bank,
where it didn't flood.
It didn't flood in the West Bank.
It didn't flood in Algiers.
And so, the gun violence
and Katrina's totally related
because it put everybody
in different spots
than where they should be.
In New Orleans,
it's all about where you from.
It's not about gangs.
We say, "Where you from?"
"I'm from uptown. I'm from downtown."
"I'm from the East."
"I'm from the West Bank."
Right? And those things can have,
dependin' on where you at
and who you're in front of,
can mean a lot.
That turns into hostility.
That turns into bein' territorial.
You're on the wrong side of town,
which turns into fights.
When fights, who lose, turns into what?
Guns, or calling your family.
And who comes over there? More guns.
And then that's how violence turns.
And Katrina did that, nothin' else.

16 years post-Katrina,
and we're still trying to,
still trying to recover.
So, I think Ida was
just, like, another blow.
But we are resilient bunch of people.

- When we first got back
together after the hurricane,
it was, um, it was refreshin'
to see everybody back.
But... durin' that practice,
the backup quarterback
was doin' a three-step drop,
and the ball was behind him.
So, AJ tried to swipe

and his finger wind up
gettin' jammed in the turf.
So, when you lose
a quarterback like that,
it's not like you have another one
that's right behind him.

It was a ruptured ligament in his thumb,
and, um... it requires surgery.
He had to start all over.
