Air Emergency (2003–…): Season 16, Episode 10 - Afghan Nightmare - full transcript

A 747 cargo plane crashes seconds after taking off from a U.S. airfield in Afghanistan, and an overlooked piece of evidence eventually tells investigators they were wrong about the cause.

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}at one of the busiest airfields on earth

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}okay it's clear let's get going

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a 747 cargo plane is transporting a load

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of military equipment within seconds

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}things go horribly wrong completely

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}foundered installed

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I remember thinking he's lost all those

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}engines the accident is caught on camera

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}holy cow

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}leading investigators to what seems like

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}an obvious conclusion looks like a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}problem with the cargo load we really

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}thought that we had the cause of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}accident but later we found out there

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}was more to the story

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it takes one piece of overlooked

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}evidence to tell investigators they were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wrong

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}back Romare field in northeastern

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Afghanistan

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it's a hive of activity

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Bagram ground I sent nine 5-alpha Quebec

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}rented taxi the crew of national

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}airlines flight 102 is on the last leg

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of a grueling shift eros is building out

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of here yeah

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}sure is they're flying cargo in a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}converted Boeing 747 and are parked on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the tarmac waiting to depart

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}please tell the flight attendant I'm

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}ready for my lobster dinner next she's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the first class handing out caviar at

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the moment joking and humor among

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircrews is probably more prevalent in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}times of stress when you get into these

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}offline unusual situations the crew

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}members are all American captain Brad

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Hassler is heading home to his pregnant

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wife beside him is first officer Jamie

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}broke or augment captain Jeremy Lipka is

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the jump seat sheets back there I

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}haven't seen him I hope he's in the back

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}yeah he's back there in a cabin behind

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the cockpit is load master Michael

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}sheets along with two technicians and an

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}augment first officer with the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}additional pilots the plane can be flown

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}long distances non-stop the crew members

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}are all civilians on contract for the US

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Department of Defense the United States

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}military and its allies built more than

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}50 bases across Afghanistan during the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}war their back room was by far the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}biggest

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it's got gyms and seven dining

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}facilities of enormous sizes it's got

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stores that had a Burger King at its

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}peak more than 40,000 people lived here

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}now after 12 years of fighting the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}military is scaling back their operation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}troops weapons and heavy machinery are

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}all on the move

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}every day air traffic control handles

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}several hundred flights coming in and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}out of the airport today national

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}airlines flight 102 is just one piece of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a hugely complex puzzle

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the flight plan has taken it from

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Chateau rue France to Camp Bastion

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Afghanistan where the crew loaded up two

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hundred and seven thousand pounds of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}cargo they were supposed to take it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}straight to Dubai but were routed via

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Bagram the crew has been waiting more

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}than an hour to depart five powerful

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Quebec I have your clearance

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}advisement ready to copy yeah let's do

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}finally they get clearance to go ready

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to copy nine five of the Quebec 95 alpha

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Quebec taxi to runway three

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}controllers need to keep a sharp eye on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crowded taxiway that the 747

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}freighter shares with other military

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}$95 Quebec give way to that c-17

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let him go first Roger will let him go

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}first a c-17 military cargo plane moves

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to the runway ahead of them although the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}military effort is winding down in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Afghanistan this is not the kind of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}place a civilian wants to linger

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}backroom is still a favorite target of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the Taliban it's a dangerous place I

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}mean it's not JFK Airport

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it's JFK Airport surrounded by

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}terrorists for the crew of flight 102

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}every delay means more risk okay he's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}clear let's get going

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}following the c-17 495 alpha Kubek

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}before takeoff checklist flats that tent

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}checks your certainly thinking what do I

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}do if somebody started firing at us on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the ground well that's a great deal of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}mental pressure

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the c-17 ahead has cleared the runway

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}how are we looking on that wing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}everything looks clear everything's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}great we all happy with that yeah I'm

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}good

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they must now wait for takeoff clearance

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they've been on duty for more than 20

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}straight hours once in Dubai they'll get

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a rest break we earned it as far as I'm

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}concerned man without minimum rest I'd

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}be dead tomorrow

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I got a degree at that sentiment it's a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}real stress situation they were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}rightfully ready for their day to be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}over

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}finally at 3:25 p.m. they're cleared for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}takeoff 95 hours of Quebec runway 3 full

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}length

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}then wait three is verified prepare for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}departure the first officer is at the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}controls for this final leg they're

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}scheduled to arrive in Dubai in two and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a half hours

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and you've been in a long delay

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}situation when you finally get the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}clearance to go it's a great relief

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}at that same moment military journalist

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Stephen Hart of is on the bases

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}perimeter road returning from a day's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}work taking photographs for a magazine

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}we decided we were gonna go get

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something to eat and I saw off to the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}left of the truck a white and purple 747

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and I remember thinking this is a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}beautiful airplane because of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}brand-new v1 rotate Boston climb

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}gear up gear about

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}he pulled away from us and started to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}rotate and in this case there was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something immediately not right the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}climb is unusually steep it was almost

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stuttering in the air and I immediately

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}said to Chris what's going on with that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft is he taking fire

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}keep on that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the plane is suddenly uncontrollable the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}nose won't drop in a matter of seconds

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crew is in emergency mode if they

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}can't get the nose down fast the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}will store

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they're not very high above the ground

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}therefore don't have very much time to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}try very many things

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}for a moment the plane hangs in the air

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}suspended and then the aircraft seemed

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to sort of Kareem in our direction now

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you're looking at a big 747 coming at

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and then it completely found her

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}installed and I remember thinking he's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}lost all this engines

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and in a very slow motion it just went

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}straight down and pancaked into the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}ground

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the explosion was enormous it was a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}mushroom cloud like a small atom bomb it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}was huge the entire base you know

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}thundered under our feet the controller

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}also watches helplessly as the aircraft

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}comes down it is the worst civilian

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aviation accident ever at Bagram

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Airfield and I just pulled a camera out

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with the lens and just shot some

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}pictures instinct you know trigger

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}instinct

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}watching those people die was tough

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stuff

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I still think about it sometimes I wake

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up thinking about it has a u.s. cargo

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}plane being shot down the safety of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}thousands of people now hinges on the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}answer today officials identified seven

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Americans killed Monday in the crash of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a cargo plane in Afghanistan national

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Airlines flight 102 crashed at America's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}biggest air force base in Afghanistan

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}remarkably no one on the ground was hit

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}but the entire flight crew is dead you

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}think about these four seven people who

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}were there on a contract job you know

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}never went oh the loss of life is tragic

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}under any circumstance but when it's a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}fellow pilot it's it's it's really hard

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to deal with within hours the Taliban

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}claims responsibility amid the specter

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of a terrorist attack the NTSB is

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}assigned to lead the u.s. investigation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}although it was an ideal is one of those

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}things that we had a job to do and so

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's go get it done

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Tim LeBaron heads up the team of five

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators this investigation was a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}lot different because we were flying

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}into warzone

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}when we first got there we were given

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}bulletproof vests and Kevlar helmets to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wear into the accident site as this is

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}an American base the civilian NTSB will

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}have to work closely with the military

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what do you got for me

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a military sweep of the crash site has

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}already turned up the black boxes the US

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}military had found the flight data

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recorder in the cockpit voice recorder

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}before we arrived and had sent them back

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to the United States to the NTSB

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}laboratory so we were very hopeful that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}we would get good information from those

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recorders that would help explain why

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the air planet crash care report for me

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}but there's another surprising piece of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}news the sweep has uncovered no evidence

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of a missile attack sure

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the Taliban claim was purely

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}opportunistic let's see what we have

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}here with the most obvious explanation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}for the crash eliminated

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the team must now take a new look at the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wreckage the damage to this aircraft was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}some of the most extensive fire damage

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I've had to work with in my career so we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}really didn't have much to work with 75%

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the plane has been consumed by fire

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}or destroyed by impact forces but the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}crucial tail section is still almost

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}intact the tail wings hold the planes

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}flight control surfaces including the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}all-important elevators which the pilots

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}move up or down to control the plane's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}pitch and pitch was a problem from the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}start of flight 102

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}we had that structure remaining so we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}did have something of value to look at

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with regards to a possible scenario for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the accident they take a close look at

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the tail wing mechanics we looked at the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic actuators for the elevators it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}really couldn't find any problems with

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that so everything seems to check out no

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}problem here I think those guys get that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}nose down if the flight controls were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}working then something else must have

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}made the plane uncontrollable every last

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}scrap of evidence is collected including

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a number of unidentified parts found on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the runway more than a mile from the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}crash site anybody know what this is

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's find out our team was in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Afghanistan one time and one time only

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}so it's very important for our team that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}we document what we could find what we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}could because we knew that we'd never be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}able to return and see the wreckage

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}again

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's get those photos to Boeing right

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}away the pieces of wreckage will be sent

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to the United States where the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}manufacturer will have to identify them

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with all the evidence now collected from

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crash site investigators move their

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}operations indoors our headquarters was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the basement of an old control tower

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}okay let's clean this place up house set

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up there yeah there really was no

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}workspace down there there were a bunch

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of computers there were signs that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}warned of asbestos and it was a pretty

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}rough environment as they are settling

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}into their temporary headquarters a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}video of the accident appears on the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Internet holy cow there it is shot from

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}an unknown vehicle on the perimeter road

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it reveals a huge clue about the planes

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}erratic climb and fall

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}looks like a problem with cargo load the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft's movement in the video

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}suggests it was carrying too much weight

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and that the load through the plane off

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}balance the weight is very important in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a cargo accident more so than a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}passenger accident per se because

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}passengers have assigned weights it's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it's very standard there's much more

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}room margin of error to work with

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}passenger weights and baggage then when

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you're flying cargo a 747 freighter

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}plane can carry just about any type of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}load it is the cargo company's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}responsibility to ensure that the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft is not overweight I've heard it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}frequently in the cargo a business about

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you call we haul and sometimes the crew

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}knows in advance what they're gonna be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}doing and sometimes it's all last minute

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}some of the early questions were you

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}know what was the cargo in the airplane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}was it full how heavy was the cargo by

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}examining the cargo manifest

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators discover that the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}was carrying an unusual load armored

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}vehicles called EM wraps or Mine

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}these massive heavily armored cars can

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}sustain roadside bombs they even have

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}bulletproof wheels the crew had never

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}flown these type of vehicles in this

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Charter in fact the airline had not

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}carried these kind of vehicles that were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}loaded on the airplane the plane was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}carrying five M wraps weighing between

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}12 and 18 tons each vehicle was chained

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to a custom-built pallet and secured

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with straps to the plane's main deck

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the cargo and this particular case was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}very heavy it was the first time they'd

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}ever flown five vehicles this heavy

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}ready to put some numbers in there yeah

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}go ahead the crew landed at Bagram Air

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Base with a full cargo load of two

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hundred and seven thousand pounds then

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they refueled increasing the fuel load

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to one hundred and six thousand pounds

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}zero fuel weight is two five nine two

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators calculate the precise

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}weight being carried max takeoff weight

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}is eight hundred seventy thousand pounds

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}we have two hundred seven thousand

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}pounds for cargo plus fuel they learned

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that even with the heavy cargo and fuel

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}load the plane was not overweight it was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}almost two hundred thousand pounds under

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the safe limit

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}where was definitely not an issue

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something else must have brought the 747

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}cargo plane down even if the weight of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the cargo was not responsible for the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}crash of flight 102 the balance of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}load could be the problem if the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft is loaded from the outset out

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of balance then that affects the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}performance of the airplane bring up the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}schematics

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators map out the placement of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the EM wraps in the hold

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to study the balance of the load 3m

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wraps weigh 18 tons each on the ends are

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}smaller versions that weigh 12 tons

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}apiece so no gravity with their vehicles

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in position looks like 30.4% after a few

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}calculations they determine the balance

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the load the airplane actually could

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}carry that weight and as loaded was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}within the center of gravity it's a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}puzzling assessment but there's another

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}possibility even if the load was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}balanced before takeoff it could have

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}shifted as the plane was lifting off the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}focus now turns to the loading

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}procedures specifically worthy M wraps

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}properly secured standard cargo

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}containers are locked into a hardware

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}system built on tracks in the floor

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}but oddly shaped oversized cargo like

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the EM wraps can't use these locks heavy

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}nylon straps are secured to tie-down

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}points around the hold what became

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}critical to me was the process of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}calculating the number of straps

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}necessary to restrain these these five

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}vehicles the load master on board the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}plane used a national airlines manual to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}calculate how many straps were needed to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}secure the vehicles based on their cargo

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}operations manual the numbers were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}determined to be twenty four straps for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the twenty eight thousand pound mat fees

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and twenty six straps for the three

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}forty thousand pound Hoover's and seeing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}his rationale for calculating those

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}numbers all seemed to make sense to me

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}despite the appearance of the dashcam

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}video analysis has shown that the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}was not overweight it was properly

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}balanced and the load was secured

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}according to company's standards

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators need to find out what was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}going on inside the plane information

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}from the black boxes will be crucial

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}flight data recorders record what the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}elevator and the ailerons and what the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}control pitches are doing so we were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}very hopeful that we would get good

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}information from those recorders that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}would help explain why the air planet

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}crashed a call comes in from the NTS

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}b--'s head office in Washington DC hey

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you have the readouts the black fox data

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}is in that's great but there's a problem

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}really I got a call from our director

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}John Delisi and he informed me that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}unfortunately the flight data recorder

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and the cockpit voice recorder had quit

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}working shortly after takeoff things

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}started to go wrong shortly after

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}liftoff known as the point of rotation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}but this is precisely the moment when

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the black boxes stopped recording having

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the FDR CVR after the point of rotation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}would have been very helpful we had none

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of that information thank you we really

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}had to revert back to old methods of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigating so I call it old-school

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}methods

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators decide to contact

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}eyewitnesses who might have seen the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}plane take off okay what else did you

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}see on a base of this size there may be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}thousands of people who could provide

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}potential clues all right well thanks

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}very much you need really to interview

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}many different witnesses and listen for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the common thread that's the same

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}through all of the witness statements

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}sorry what did you see

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}one witness reports an unusual sight a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}runway sweeper is sure he saw puffs of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}smoke trailing behind the airplane after

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}liftoff and it wasn't coming off the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wings or out of the engines his

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}testimony raises the possibility that a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}fire inside the plane may have caused

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crash

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}if a fire had started inside the cargo

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hold during liftoff there would be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}evidence of this on the pieces of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wreckage from the interior of the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the interesting thing was the tail

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}portion the aft pressure bulkhead which

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}is white in its color did not have any

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}evidence to support that we had a fire

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}on board the airplane before the impact

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}there's no sign of any smoke residue the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}condemned in a fire on board

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators are at another and pass

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they still have no hard evidence about

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the final fatal moments of flight 102

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}when you go to an accident scene where

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}everything appears to be burn up and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}there's not a lot left how in the world

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}can you do an investigation one thing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}for sure is there's always evidence

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}bring up the CVR standby in a search for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}answers investigators turn to the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}cockpit voice recorder it cut out just

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}three seconds after liftoff but it was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recording during the crews hour-long

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}wait on the tarmac what the heck let's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hear the whole two hours might be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something there does like the first

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}officer showing something to the captain

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}there's your trouble thread what is it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the damn stress buster the CVR suggests

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the first officer found a broken strap

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}inside the cargo hold yeah just tighten

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up on the straps holy crap one of those

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}things actually moved so we're hearing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crew talk about that the load had

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}shifted also that a strap had broken

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}definitely piqued our interest go again

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}those things shouldn't budge an inch

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}despite investigators earlier conclusion

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that the heavy load was properly secured

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and therefore could not shift the CVR

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recording indicates that the opposite

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}was true so from that information we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}know that they had a load shift when

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they came in and landed and that was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}very important to us in our

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}all the straps who were keeping them

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}from moving backwards loose what the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hell you think is gonna happen when you

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}slam it on the runway Sam on the brakes

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and don't use reverse well there ain't

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}nothing they could have done about that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}getting off this plane I'm scared

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they have no idea how serious this

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}really is really the crew is not trained

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}or equipped to actually be involved in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}knowing whether the restraints are

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}proper for the load

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I hope instead of just replacing that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}strap he's beefing the strap up more

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}yeah he's cinching them all down stop he

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}would be load master Michael sheets the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}load master in a cargo operation is the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}one that's responsible for the security

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the load so everyone is depending

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}upon them what's up dude you filled out

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the strap away did you put a couple

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}more on how far to move a couple inches

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}yeah just moved a couple inches cuz

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}nylon you know things are so heavy you'd

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}think it probably wouldn't hardly move

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}no matter what they always move

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}everything moves so if those straps

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}weren't fixed right then the back

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}vehicle could have come loose on takeoff

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that cart of shifts are in rotation

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you'll wind up with a potential pitch

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}problem did the EM wraps shift after

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}takeoff to answer this question the team

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}must find a way to piece together events

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the cargo hold in the moments before

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crash

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}so there's no evidence of investigators

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}need to prove that one of the heavy Mine

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}shifted during the flight clues might be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hard to find in the minimal and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}scattered remains of the aircraft but

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the one thing as investigators that we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}do is we go into a very chaotic

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}environment and we bring order to it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}okay guys great put that down right so

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the center there so I gathered the as

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}much of the a pressure bulkhead

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}structure as I could and believe we came

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up with at least 90 to 95% of it the aft

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}pressure bulkhead is an airtight wall it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}protects the cargo area from the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}non-pressurized tail section of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators sort out pieces of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}liner that covers the cargo hold side of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the bulkhead you definitely go with this

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}guy here take a look at this I can guess

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what that is and you could read the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}words big year what became obvious was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that the tire from the aft matvey had

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}impacted the aft pressure bulkhead and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}left that tire impact on the liner BAM

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}looked as if that tire had pressed up

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}like a rubber stamp on the a pressure

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}bulkhead only one tire capable doing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that the mark matches the spare tire in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the top right corner of the rear vehicle

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the vehicle itself was found tipped over

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the wreckage damaged but not

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}destroyed by fire faster their fleshly

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}William

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the metal antenna box from the rear of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the same MRAP is damaged and provides

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}another big clue

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}look at that paint transfer the box sits

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up high at the back of the MRAP that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}looks like a direct hit the only place

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that we could think of where there was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}orange paint was the cockpit voice

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recorder and a flight data recorder to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hit the flight recorders the MRAP would

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}have had to shift at least 12 feet

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}could it have moved that far a few quick

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}measurements show that the height of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}pate transfer on the antenna box lines

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up neatly with the location of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}orange recorders inside the plane the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}antenna pops at about 104 inches above

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}floor level and where the CVR and FDR

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}are located is 104 inches above the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}floor of the aircraft now you're

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}starting to see a chain of events that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}this vehicle had to be moving in an apt

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}word direction both black boxes stopped

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recording seconds after takeoff because

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a 12-ton MRAP knocked them out but even

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}if the heavy vehicle damaged the flight

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recorders

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}would it have been able to somehow bring

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}down a huge 747 investigators turn to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the only wreckage left to examine the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}collection of unidentified parts found

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}on the runway these items were all

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}recovered from the runway in the area

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}near the point of rotation for the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}flight at Bagram Airfield the runway

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stretches for over two miles the parts

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}were discovered at the spot where the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft lifted off one mile from the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}site of the crash it is uncertain what

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}relevance if any they have where were

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}these parts on the airplane did they

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}come from the nose section did they come

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}from the aft section of the airplane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what function did they serve on the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}airplane experts at Boeing have been

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}able to identify them there we go

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic return to one of the parts a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}broken piece of tubing comes from

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic system number two bring up the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic system schematic the 747 has

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}four hydraulic lines that power the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}control systems of the aircraft

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic system number two carries

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}fluid along the deck floor and through

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the aft pressure bulkhead at the back of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the tube runs through here the number

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}two hydraulic system operates one of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}four airplane elevator panels the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}elevator panels control pitch from the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}tail of the aircraft if the rear vehicle

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}shifted backwards through the bulkhead

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it could have hit the hydraulic tubing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}effecting control of the airplane okay

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's play

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators decide to take a closer

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}look at the dashcam video

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}play it again the seven slow motion upon

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}close examination they noticed something

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}odd breeze

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something's not right

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}advanced a few frames or more a little

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}more

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what's going on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something's wonky with the landing gear

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}large aircraft like the 747 they have a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}very complicated landing gear system to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}carry the loads that they carry they

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}come down together and they go up

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}together and it takes several hydraulic

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}systems to make that happen the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic systems the control landing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}gear also regulate various other parts

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the plane including control surfaces

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that affect pitch

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}using animation software the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators create a match for the 747

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with its five sets of landing gear now

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's compare the model to the video

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}these are down and this one here is up

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}this shouldn't happen positive climb on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}national airlines flight 102 one of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}last commands recorded refers to the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}landing gear gear up here but after that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}exchange not all the gear retracted when

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I see a configuration of an airplane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with part of the landing gear up part of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it down I immediately think that they've

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}had a hydraulic failure of one or more

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the hydraulic systems

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it looks like damage to one of the four

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic lines may have happened in the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}air which systems are out

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the nose and body landing gear didn't

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}retract it must have been system one we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}were able to determine that the number

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}one hydraulic system had been damaged at

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}some point before the airplane hit the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}ground the discovery of the broken

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hydraulic line explains the eyewitness

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}account of smoke as hydraulic fluid

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}vaporizes behind the airplane it appears

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to look like smoke investigators think

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}they have finally cracked the mystery

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the heavy armored vehicle came loose

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}smashed through the back of the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and took out the hydraulic lines making

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the plane uncontrollable

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}after eleven days in Bagram the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators are ready to head home all

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that's left to do is wrap up the case

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with a simulation test back in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Washington we really thought that we had

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the cause of the accident but there was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}more to the story at NTSB headquarters

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in Washington DC

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}glad to be back investigators are

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}preparing to finalize the case all they

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}have to do is to verify their theory the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}damaged hydraulics made it impossible

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}for the pilots to recover from the steep

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}climb so once we got back United States

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the next step was to do simulations

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}reenact the accident scenario first they

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}model the 747 with two broken hydraulic

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}systems to test the cargo shift airplane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}performance group chairman Tim Burch

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}oversees the simulations if I had one of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}these armored vehicles moved back and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}there was a associated see center of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}gravity shift is the airplane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}controllable okay what else do we know

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's try the New Balance numbers let's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}take what we know up to a point and then

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}start doing the what-if scenarios with

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the simulation to see if we can put

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}together a story that makes sense

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}okay plane let's see what you do now but

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}when they run the simulation of the rear

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}vehicle coming loose something totally

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}unexpected happens those comes down and

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}flies that are trouble let's shift even

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}more weight back

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}let's push the center of gravity even

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}further

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}yes try that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}even with two hydraulic systems broken

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and an MRAP crushed into the back of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}plane the simulations show that the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft can be controlled we're missing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something the theory that seemed so

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}solid in Afghanistan is now a bust so we

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}started scratching our heads there was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}something more that we were missing most

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of the airplane wreckage now lies buried

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}near the crash site in Afghanistan

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}thousands of miles away only selected

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}parts have been sent to the United

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}States for analysis investigators must

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}sift through photographs from the site

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to search for new evidence that might

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}explain what caused the crash

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I wonder so we needed to look further

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and the next thing behind the F pressure

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}bulkhead the control pitch on the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}aircraft is the jackscrew Hey but that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stabilizer jack screw and up the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}horizontal stabilizer is a large control

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}surface that helps balance the plane in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the air

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the jackscrew about six feet tall lowers

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and raises the edge of the stabilizer in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}response to the pilots commands the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}jackscrew found at the crash site was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}bent and severed right near its base the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}most likely explanation seemed to be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that the damage occurred on impact but

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}just to make sure it was sent to the US

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}for testing what we were surprised to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}find out was that that Jack's crew had

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}actually been pushed aft and had broken

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}loose from the airplane results show

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that the jackscrew was bent backwards

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the opposite of how it would have bent

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}in the crash so that raised a big

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}question why what could have pushed it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}after

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}deliver parental ah--this to find out

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what could have hit the jackscrew

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators consulted diagram of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}airplanes aft section they take some

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}careful measurements and come up with a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}match yep straight hit I was able to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}determine that the bumper of the matvey

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}lines up directly with the motor of the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}jackscrew in the area where it detached

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}from the lower fuselage they input the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}new data the simulation now includes a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}broken Jack screw that makes the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stabilizer free-floating one amer up at

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the back the two elevators down

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}equals one uncontrollable plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}investigators finally know that an MRAP

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}crashing into the jackscrew is what

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}brought the airplane down but there's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}still one major mystery we're not done

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}yet there's one more question how did

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that MRAP come loose in Bagram the load

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}master had calculated the correct number

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of straps to use on each vehicle he

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}based his calculations on the company's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}cargo operating manual how could the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}cargo have come loose if he followed the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}right procedure immediately began

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}contacting other cargo operators to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}understand what is supposed to be done

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to restrain free-floating cargo using

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}straps when executives from Boeing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}review the procedures the less than

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}impressed the manufacturers were quite

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}shocked at how they were interpreting

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the requirements to get the maximum load

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}capacity out of each strap it has to be

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}tied down at a precise angle changing

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the angle changes the straps capacity

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the airline hadn't spelled this out in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}its manual Boeing when you look at their

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}manual they say that if you pull on a

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}strap directly let's say that it's worth

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}thirty five hundred pounds but if you go

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up on a 45 degree angle it's worth even

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}less and if you pull on it a 90-degree

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}angle

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}it's worth zero national airlines manual

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}said regardless of angle each strap

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}could be counted for five thousand

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}pounds

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}Boeing's own calculations found that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}national airlines flight 102 took off

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}with less than half the straps required

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}on each vehicle at the most they could

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}have carried one mapping vehicle what's

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}up dude investigators find no fault with

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}flight loadmaster Michael sheets he had

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}little training he wasn't certified

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}without knowing it he'd based his

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}calculations on a faulty manual my heart

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}goes out to the load master in this

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}situation the data the manuals that he

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}had to go by were incorrect so he was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}really in a no-win situation but the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}cargo shift itself would not have

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}brought down the plane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the crash ultimately occurred because

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the sliding MRAP damaged the horizontal

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}stabilizer you take away the horizontal

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}tail you're not going to be able to

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}control this airplane in pitch this was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}an uncontrollable event without the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}horizontal stabilizer the pilots inputs

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}made the plane do the exact opposite of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what they wanted a command to lower the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}nose suddenly caused the plane to pitch

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}power there's a total disconnect between

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}what you're doing as a pilot and what

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the airplane is doing and it must have

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}been terrifying

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}I can't truthfully imagine that other

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}than just sheer panic

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the NTS b--'s final report finds that

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the probable cause of the accident was

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}national airlines inadequate procedures

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}for restraining special cargo loads it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}concludes that the improper restraint of

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}the rear vehicle allowed it to move back

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hit the aft pressure bulkhead knocked

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}out the two hydraulic systems and the

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}horizontal stabilizer making it

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}impossible for the crew to regain

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}control of the airplane

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}one of the key recommendations is for

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}mandatory certification of all cargo

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}handling personnel a move that would

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}standardize their procedures training

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}and workloads I know that there are

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}economics involved in using more

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}certified people in but I certainly hope

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}that they end up making loadmasters in

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}these cargo operations certified just

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}like anybody else so reflecting back on

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}this investigation there were many

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}hurdles we'd went into Afghanistan with

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}a very very small team we had to go back

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}to old school methods

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}but at the end we actually came out with

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}safety recommendations that I believe

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}are going to prevent an accident like

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}this one from happening together I don't

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}forget to tragedy but I also have a lot

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}of pride that I believe that we've been

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}able to make a difference

{\a2}{\c&HFFFFFF&}{\fnTahoma}you
