A Kind of Spark (2023–…): Season 1, Episode 8 - Something Wicked - full transcript

Backstage drama threatens the school's production of Macbeth. Emily's jealousy reaches a breaking point and lashes out at Addie. Nina and Keedie must then rescue their little sister from the wrath of Miss Murphy.

My drama group's performance of
Macbeth is fast approaching.

WHISPERS: There might be a way to
win Miss Murphy over.

You'll be my witches.

I have to go. Now, back to the main
event! Sleepover!

Addie, why are you answering Jenna's
phone? I want to go home.

I broke up with Frank.

Look, Keedie, you're my twin but you

and Addie have this connection that
I'll never be a part of.

Margaret Fraser, I accuse
you of witchcraft. Take her away.

When shall we three meet again?
In thunder...

..rain or light...ning?

Stop! I did it again, didn't I?

It's, "Thunder, lightning or in
rain."

No scripts!

I can't seem to get the line right.

It's just a few little words.

That happen to start the entire
play.

If I ruin this play,

then Miss Murphy will never say yes
to the memorial.

Look, erm, if you really mess up,

then I know your lines and I'll say
them, OK?

OK.

From the top!
Everything's going to be fine.

Very nice, ladies.
Oh, Caleb, thank you.

Oh, the bigger one.

50 minutes till our first
performance, people! Chop, chop!

Now, where is Mr Allison with
those boulders?

Downstage right, please, Mr Allison.
Sorry.

Thunder, lightning, rain.

Thunder, rain.
Thunder, lightning, rain.

Lady Macbeth? More like Lady
Mac-yes!

You're done. Thank you.
OK, who's next?

Macbeth, get your Mac-butt
over here.

Frank? I didn't know you were doing
the play.

Original kid got sick,

and Miss Murphy found out I know

all the words, so here we are.

You're finally getting
to give me a makeover.

OK, well, take a seat.

Awkward!

Dad's going to be
here for the evening performance

and he thinks Mum might be able
to make it out.

Great. So the whole family can
see me ruin my lines.

Witches carry spell books, right?
Witches aren't real.

But if they were, they'd probably

have everything written down in
something like this?

Keedie, you're a genius!
SHE LAUGHS

That's private!

Beth? They let you out?

Turns out a servant girl
isn't as good

a catch as the lady of the manor.

Why didn't you say anything?
You're her sister!

You just let them take her away!

I'm going to the jailhouse today to
plead her case. It's too late!

The trial's tomorrow.

You were always too hard on her.

"Be more of a lady.

"Don't talk to lesser folk.
Stay away from trouble."

You never just loved her for who
she is, how she is,

and now the witch hunter's got her,
and it's all your fault!

DOOR SHUTS

Addie! Oh!
THEY LAUGH

It's only us.
Do we look like proper witches?

Well, no, because witches were
just normal people who were

punished for being different.

Yes, OK, Addie.
Nina wants you in make-up.

OK, one minute, just got...

I know how much Maggie's diary

means to you, but I'm not sure
that's going to help you right now.

Oh, really?

Keedie gave me the idea.
Brilliant.

Witches...assemble.

THEY LAUGH

Come on!

You were supposed to protect us.

TRUMPET PLAYS

What on earth...?

Hello.

SHE LAUGHS

How did you do that?

Oh, you just were more focused on

the smoke and you didn't see
me coming.

SHE CHUCKLES

Are you lost?

No, I own these woods.

Oh. Well, if you don't mind my
saying, my lady,

you seem to have the
look of a lost soul.

We are about to eat,
and my friends love an audience.

SHE CHUCKLES
Come with us a little while.

Look, darling, doesn't that look
snazzy?

Go on, have a read.

I'm good, thanks. Your teacher said
we should practise together.

Mum, please.

Come on, first bit's easy.

Pamela Parks Prop...Prop...

"Property...

"..proudly sponsors..." "Macbeth."

It's my mum!

I thought she was coming
to the evening show!

Obviously couldn't
wait to see your big moment.

That's a nice thing to say.

I am actually nice.
SHE CHUCKLES

All cast to the backstage area now.

Hush, right, everyone, and, "Rrrrr!"

ALL: Rrrrrr! Rrrrrrr!

And give yourselves a big round of
applause!

This is the sound you'll be hearing
if each

and every one of you
do your job correctly.

I want total focus...

..no funny business.

Break a leg, everyone!

Hey, I need to catch up
with you later.

I found something in one
of my history books,

a reference to a "vanishing".

Do you think it could be to do with
Maggie? Her diary ends so abruptly.

Look. Is that a script I spy?
I need it. No scripts.

You can have it back after the show.
Five minutes, everyone!

I need to get some air.

The show's about to...start.

Thunder, lightning and in rain.
Thunder, lightning and in rain.

Thunder, lightning... Stage fright?

Miss Murphy took Maggie's diary
off me. It had my script in it.

Miss Murphy trod on my boulder,

and it has lost
all its structural integrity.

OK, if a shark were in this play,
what would it do?

Eat the audience.

No, it wouldn't let fear take over.

We need to think more shark.

I think there might be a way to
solve both our problems.

And I must say I'm thrilled to be
bringing a little bit of quality

and class to the school.

As many of you know, I am deeply
committed to raising

standards across Juniper.

And so, without further
ado from little old me,

I present to you, Macbeth!

It's starting. Where's Addie?

So, you know Addie's lines, right?
No!

I just said that to talk her down.

THUNDER PEELS

THUNDER PEELS

This is not good.

It's supposed to be three witches.

WHISPERS: Shall I just say
something?

When shall we three meet again?
In thunder, lightning or in rain?

Erm, when the hurly-burly's done,
when the battle's lost and won.

That will be ere the set of sun.
But where the place? Upon the heath.

There to meet with... Macbeth.

Who IS that girl?

She's got such an incredible
presence!

APPLAUSE

What is your secret?

Erm, it's...I don't have a secret.

SHE LAUGHS

Anyone who comes this deep
into the woods

is running from something.

I know I am. We are
a family of lost souls.

The world's...difficult for me.

It's too loud, too bright, too much.

My fingers, they, like...they can't
stop moving.

It's like magic.

I tried to cast a spell to
protect my family,

but the witch hunter found it
and now my sister is in jail

and it's my fault, it should be me.

I knew a girl like you once.
Like me?

Yeah, her hands danced just
the way yours do.

There was nothing wrong with her,
either

she was just the way she was.
Elinor...

..this world is full of variety,

and it's easy to forget that

when you spend too
long in a place like Juniper.

We're packing up camp tonight.

You could come with us?

Join our family.

Hey, everyone. Great job,
I loved it. Has anyone seen Jenna?

You were brilliant, Addie.

Miss Murphy is so going to give you
that witches memorial now.

I hope so. It has been so hard, but
if she says yes,

it will all have been worth it.

I think you've found your secret
talent.

I hope you stay in the drama club.

And you don't have to worry,
Emily wouldn't join,

she doesn't like plays.

That's sad. She's missing out.

Ah-ha! My three wonderful witches.

Come on, ladies, the intermission
is ending.

# Let's do this thing! #

THEY LAUGH

Double, double, toil and trouble.

ALL: Fire burn and cauldron bubble!

Is this a dagger which
I see before me?

No, really!

Is this a dagger which I see
before me? And if so, where is it?

AUDIENCE MURMURS

How about that? It IS a dagger
which I see before me!

ALL: Fair is foul, and foul is fair,

hover through the fog
and filthy air.

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

You really care about her,
don't you? Yeah. Me, too.

We did it!
THEY LAUGH

Not bad, Adeline. Not bad at all.

Miss Murphy, there's actually
something that I need to ask you.

It was wonderful, Greta! Thank you,
Headmaster. Governors are thrilled.

Well done. It can wait.

She's here.

Addie, don't come in here.

How could you? Cos I'm
sick of that stupid little book.

Sick of all your books. Why?

Because...you're no better than me,
freak!

You all just stood there!

What's going on?
We're all sick of you, Addie,

thinking you're so special

because you managed to say a couple
of lines in a rubbish school play.

Stop it! You having a meltdown,
Addie? Are you?

You hate her because she's
so much smarter than you! She's not!

She just thinks she is. And you
don't get a free pass

just because you have a disease!

It's not a disease!
She's just like her crazy sister,

two nasty little freaks together,
and everyone...

ADDIE GRUNTS

Is she all right?

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

What is going on here?

Addie? I'm really sorry.

Addie just attacked me for no
reason! Liar!

I'm not a liar, Miss. But Addie and
Audrey are. I heard them talking.

The only reason they did this play
was to trick you into giving

Addie that stupid memorial.

That true? That has nothing to do
with what's just happened!

Jenna, tell her!

Anyone?

My office...now!

You're all a bunch of cowards.

She was the best, wasn't she?
She WAS the best!

You're great, Frank!

I mean, you WERE great...in the
play.

Oh. Yeah, I know you didn't mean
I'm great generally,

otherwise we'd still be...
You're right, yeah.

Keedie, Nina,
something bad's happened.

The diary and everyone...

Miss Murphy's taken Addie to her
office. What?

Keedie, wait! It's happening again!
What's happening again? Keedie!

The play was a wonderful
moment for the whole school,

and you have ruined it!

You just can't think about anyone
but yourself, can you? She's fine,

she's safe. I assume you've heard
what happened? What?

Your sister attacked another pupil.
Addie wouldn't do that!

We have multiple witnesses,
including myself.

I told your parents this
school is the wrong

environment for a child with
Addie's needs, but... No!

I won't let you do this again.

I have no idea what you're
talking about. We're leaving.

I'm not finished.
Oh, I think you are.

See, unless I'm mistaken,
school policy dictates that

a teacher may only reprimand
a student with other adults present.

And I don't see any other adults.
So, until then... Come on, Addie.

One day people will see who you
really are.

Can you fix this?

That's Addie's, isn't it?

I can try. Thanks.

Look, Audrey, erm...

..if someone saw what happened,
it'd really help Addie.

What's going to happen to her?

Well, the school's pretty

zero-tolerance when it comes
to violence.

She was provoked. I have spoken to
every child who was in the room,

they're all claiming
they didn't see what happened,

and without a witness,

there's a real chance
Addie could be expelled.

Addie, can I talk to you,
just us two?

Sure.

I'm sorry...

..for not realising what's been
going on with Miss Murphy.

I shouldn't have made you
be in that video,

I haven't been a very good sister -
to you or Keedie. No, you have!

Juniper's not an easy
place for you guys, I know that.

And I haven't helped. It's not
exactly easy for you, either, is it?

That's why us Darrow sisters have to
stick together.

Can I...?

Keedie?

Keedie? What's wrong?

It was too much. Oh, easy now. Easy.

She's OK. She gave everything
she had just now.

She doesn't have anything left.

She's burnt out.

Not long till the sun goes down!
Let's get going!

Boo! Gotcha!

SHE LAUGHS

You're not coming, are you?

No. I can't stay.

I've got to be brave.

I've got to be different.

I'm going to do what's right.

What's the plan?

I'm going to save my sister.

But I'm going to need your help.

Of course.

I'll be fine. I know.
