The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals (2021): Season 1, Episode 1 - Best of Bali - full transcript

Megan, Jo, and Louis, tour the lush island of Bali while staying in an eco-friendly birds nest, a rice terrace retreat, and a beachfront villa.

[upbeat music playing]

[Luis] Are you ready to start
traveling the world once again?

We're going to show you
the most amazing way to do it.

[laughing]

[Jo] This is better than a hotel.

[Luis] There are over three million
vacation rentals at your fingertips now.

Holy bamboo.

Oh my God, you guys.
The beauty we get to see.

[Luis] They come in all shapes and sizes.

-[Jo] I can't believe you can rent this.
-[Megan] This is crazy and weird,

and I'm into it.

[Luis laughing]

Wow, what a beautiful place.

Welcome to our luxury cave.

[Jo] We'll be your guides
on how you can rent the world.

Have you ever seen anything like this?

For the past 10 years, I've been selling
high-end real estate in New York City.

Now I will show you the most beautiful
luxury vacation rentals around the world.

[Jo] This is just unreal!

I've traveled to over 50 countries.
I speak six languages.

I'm going to take you off the beaten path
to show you truly unique vacation rentals.

-How many acres are on this land here?
-[man] About 70,000.

[Megan] I'm a DIY designer

and also kind of a newbie
when it comes to travel.

I'm going to be your guide
to budget-friendly vacation rentals.

Every episode will spotlight
a different rental category...

Andy Warhol was sitting where you are.

...that can deliver
life-changing experiences.

-[Luis] Right there!
-[girls screaming]

-[Megan] Look at that!
-[Jo] Wow!

[Megan] How is this a real place?

[Luis] There's a property for everyone.

Guys, let's explore this. Let's go!

[Megan] In this episode,
we'll show you the best of Bali.

[Jo] Bali is one of the top destinations
in all of Indonesia,

and with over six million visitors
every year,

Bali has all types of properties
to suit any traveler.

[Megan] We start at this eco-friendly
tree house here in Ubud.

[Jo] To this traditional village
for a very special day.

[Luis] To this modern masterpiece
on the beach.

-[horns honking]
-[upbeat music playing]

Here we go. What a weather, what a life!

-What a car.
-It's nice. [laughing]

-Friend, what's your name?
-My name is Kadek.

-Kadek?
-Yes.

[Megan] This is how you show up to Bali.

Don't you feel like Bali now,
the culture, is, like, in your face?

Yes! I also don't know
which side of the street we're on.

-[horn honking]
-This is a free-for-all.Okay! [laughing]

[Luis] Megan, I'm curious
where you're taking us.

Usually, I'd really want a secluded area
just for us to be alone and hang out.

But I'm pushing my comfort zone,

and we're going to a place
called Firefly Eco-Lodge,

and staying in a four-story bird's nest.

[Luis and Jo] What?

[Megan] For my property, I found a place
right next to rice fields,

and it's only five minutes
from downtown Ubud.

We're there.

As you know, oftentimes,budget rentals
come with a little challenge.

And in this case, we do have
a bit of a walk to get to the property.

But when the walk
is through Balinese rice fields,

I dare you to complain.

[Luis] How do you know where you're going?

-[Megan] I'm just following this path.
-[Luis] Oh my God.

Wow, this looks like a village.

-[Jo] Is this it?
-[Megan] All of that.

All four stories.

-[Luis] Whoa.
-[Jo] What?

[Megan] I love elegant but thrifty design.

That's why I picked this spectacular
four-level tree house

called the Bird's Nest.

It's got four bamboo pods,

two shared bathrooms,
and can sleep eight guests.

And the best part,
it goes for $24 per night, per bed.

Wow, look at this bamboo ladder.

-They look like flutes.
-Whoa.

It's so high.

-[Megan] I'm going in.
-If you fall, we're here to catch you.

I feel like I'm rock climbing.

Focus, focus.

[Megan] Ooh, gosh.

This is crazy.

Wow.

I feel like I'm in a basket.

This truly is
a beautifully executed space.

[Luis] How's the weather there?

-[Megan] It's higher than you think.
-Is that your room?

Like I said, it's higher than you think.

-[laughing]
-So I think I'll probably go one below.

-[Luis] Okay.
-Okay.

-I need to see the penthouse.
-You would call the top a penthouse.

[Luis] Okay, this is my room!

-[Megan] Do you like it?
-[Luis] I love it!

You can't even hear him. He's so high up.

[Luis] I have high ceilings,
and plus, there is a chandelier here.

-[Jo] What?
-[Luis] Yeah.

-Oh my God.
-We don't have that.

I have the view of everything.
The breeze is spectacular.

Top of the showerheads,
I can see all the bathrooms.

You can't get to them quickly.

-So...
-Wow, I didn't think of that.

[all laughing]

I am in the fourth floor of a bird's nest,

in a 50 square-foot bedroom,
the bed the size of the entire place,

and I feel like I'm on top of the world.
I feel like I'm home.

How does that happen?
Because there's intention behind it.

Somebody thought about
this particular vibe,

this particular experience,

and it's not about how big the place is.
It's about the intention behind it.

These are things I look for when I travel,
the simplest things in life.

There's not much here,

but if you really think about it,
there's everything.

[upbeat music playing]

[Megan] This shows that you can get
great design at a really affordable price.

These lockers, since you don't want
to bring all your stuff up to the top,

you put your stuff in here.

So that all you need...

-[Jo] So cool.
-Yeah, I like that. Very cool.

[Jo] So how much did this thing cost?

So all four bedrooms, $24 per bed.

-What?
-24 bucks.

You could share that with a boo-boo
and pay $12 to stay here.

-[Luis] With a "boo-boo"?
-My boo-boo would be paying for the $24.

Design like this has been trending
on social media for years.

But actually seeing this place in person,

I'm now reaching a new level of
appreciation for the local craftsmanship.

And look at this bathtub!

Look how beautiful.
It's just a slab of stone.

[Luis] Whoa, this is incredible.

[Megan] It's almost like
you don't need the curtain

-because the vines are the curtain.
-[Luis] Yep.

For $24 a night, I don't think
there's a better deal in all of Bali.

So, I used to work at a hostel,

and one thing I need to advise you to do
is bring flip-flops for the showers.

It's a shared space, baby.
You're gonna need it,

you don't know if people
are peeing in the showers.

Luis!

[Megan] So, here at Firefly,
the heart of this entire property

is this beautifully designed
communal lodge.

[upbeat music playing]

-[Luis] Look at the entrance.
-[Megan] Wow.

-[Megan] This room...
-[Jo] Wow.

[Luis] Whoa.

-[Megan] There's no walls?
-[Jo] None.

-But there's a swing.
-And a pool.

[Megan] DIY and design are my passions,
andI'm truly blown away

by the creative use
of all of these reclaimed materials.

[Jo] There's even a bar?
I did not expect there to be a bar here.

As somebody who's stayed
in several different hostels,

this place has taste and vibe,
and I love it.

[Megan] Firefly Eco-Lodge was built
by this American woman who moved to Bali,

then she leased the land
and built out this entire property

over the last couple of years.

But what's really cool

is that she combined Balinese construction
with her love for repurposing.

I love that each inch of this place
is either custom or sustainable.

-Like the most elevated version of DIY.
-Yeah, absolutely.

I mean, I'm definitely more like you.
I'm the DIY girl.

Everything has a story,

and you're basically putting that story
in another chapter of a book.

-Yeah.
-So it's just... the story's not over.

It's just being added onto.

So many of the elements here
have been repurposed from older things,

from the mast of a ship,
to the roof of a demolished house.

[chiming softly]

That sound is beautiful.

[ethereal music playing]

They say Bali isn't just a place.

It's a state of mind.

The people, the atmosphere,

it's all about learning how to slow down
and just enjoy.

[Luis] It's almost like everything is made
to make the sounds of nature,

-just, like, enhanced on their own.
-[Megan] Yeah.

The sounds of Bali.

[night chirping]

I'm going to attempt to get ready for bed.

Here is bug spray
that was left on the bed.

So we're just gonna do
a quick spritz of that.

Apparently, we're supposed
to tuck these mosquito nets inside.

-Thanks, Jo!
-[Jo] Oh, yeah. Tuck it in, baby.

I'm in my nest pod.

Megan's under me. Megan!
She's struggling down there.

Oh my God!

[Luis] Megan, silencio, por favor!

[mid-tempo music playing]

[quacking]

[Megan] This is great.

I'm having a good time
because when else

-am I gonna be sleeping in a nest in Bali?
-I know.

[Megan] But get ready, because we're about
to have an experience in Ubud.

So one of the reasons
I selfishly chose Firefly,

is the fact that we are
only five minutes to downtown.

I cannot wait to see all the local artists

crafting their custom designs in person.

Do I have a suitcase big enough
to bring this back home?

It's truly inspiring to actually
see it being made by hand

than just on a store shelf back home.

One month to make this door?

Yes.

-I think this is my outfit.
-It's beautiful.

And because we were downtown,
we had to do the touristy thing

because when else do you get to
visit a forest full of monkeys?

-[snarling]
-No!

Gotta go, gotta run.
This is why I should never leave home.

[Luis] Staying at a vacation rental
allows you to live like a local

and hang out with locals,

like I'm doing today
with our driver Kadek.

So this is a traditional Balinese home

with a traditional Balinese family.

Whoa.

After lunch, Kadek introduced me
to some of his family that live with him,

including his 103-year-old grandfather.

[camera shutter clicks]

Salud. Salud.

-You're traveling here from South Africa.
-[woman] Yeah.

[Megan] I wasn't sure I was gonna like
sharing a property with strangers,

but getting together with guests
from around the world

for Firefly's communal dinner
completely changed my opinion.

Gorgeous!

[Luis] Honestly, I swear, this is probably
the best food I've had in years.

-Honestly.
-It's vegetarian. I'm not vegetarian.

It tastes better when you share stuff.

So, what are you guys doing here?

We're traveling the world,
visiting the best short-term rentals.

And so, I'm choosing
budget-friendly properties

to show them, like, you don't need
a lot of money to have a great time.

-[woman] Yeah.
-[Megan] I've never traveled like this,

so this is super eye-opening for me.

As a newbie world traveler,

Firefly has really been
an incredible stay.

It's a place where people on a budget
can get custom-designed accommodations,

plus access to local culture

and on top of that, the ability to make
new friends from around the world.

That's a perfect intro to Bali.

-To Megan!
-[all] Cheers.

[Jo] Ubud gave us
a great welcome to Bali.

But now we're headed 90 minutes away
into the countryside,

towards the vacation rental I've selected
in the rural area called Selat.

-[Jo] Look at this!
-It's like a 360 picture.

[peaceful music playing]

[Jo] We're going a bit deeper.

With my property,
we are going off the grid.

Rice terraces and jungles.

Because it's secluded,
you get a lot of locals and families,

and our host
is one of the chiefs of the village.

-The community leader has an Airbnb?
-Yes!

I'm excited because I don't know
anything about the culture in general,

and I want to embrace it to the fullest.

-[Luis] Look, beautiful.
-[Jo] This is crazy.

We've also timed our visit out perfectly.
Tomorrow happens to be Galungan Day,

one of the biggest religious ceremonies
of the year in Bali.

[Luis] Those are for the holiday.

[Jo] An event that our host is gonna
take us to as part of our stay,

which was one of the main reasons
I chose this property.

-[Luis] This is it?
-[Jo] This is it.

-[Megan] Beautiful.
-[Jo] There's Made!

[Luis] My God.

-[Made] Welcome.
-[Jo] Hi, Made!

-Hi.
-Nice to meet you.

-Hi.
-Welcome to our place.

-[Made] This is all family here.

[Jo] Hi.

-Thank you.
-[Made] We live with a big family.

-Welcome to Bali.
-Thank you.

Hello. Oh my God, thank you.

-[Made] Welcome.

-Can we take a look at the view?
-Please. Sure.

[Made] Have a look here.

[Jo] Wow.

[mid-tempo music playing]

[Luis] Wow, this is so nice.

[Megan chuckling] Wow.

Did you build
this whole property yourself?

Uh, yes. All coming from dreaming, yeah,

and following my dream,

with meditation.

You made your dream a reality.

It's very apparent.

-It's gorgeous.
-Beautiful.

[Made] We have the property here.

[Jo] I love that you're walking
through the jungle to get to the property.

-[Megan] What?
-[Luis] Whoa!

[Jo] Oh my God. My heart.

[Luis] Yes! [laughing]

[uplifting music playing]

Yeah!

Holy bamboo.

Okay, so my unique selection
is an architectural treasure

among the rice terraces of Selat.

The Camaya Bali Butterfly
has two bedrooms,

one bathroom,

and can sleep four guests.

Total seclusion for $375 a night.

It looks like a butterfly.

-[Jo] Wow.
-[Megan] That's actually breathtaking.

Look at this.

[Luis] Whoa.

[Megan] Wow.

[Jo] This is grand.

[peaceful music playing]

[Jo] Can we talk about how
when you open your eyes from that bed,

this is the first thing you see?

Look at this! This is incredible.

The use of space alone,

like just one wall
accomplishes so many things.

You have a full-on closet.

This is a bench, could be a bed.

From the ceiling to the floor,
this place is art.

This is about 250 square feet.

[Megan] How much would this cost
in New York?

Oh, probably about $2,000 a square foot.

This is definitely a brilliant house.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jo] Did you guys see this pool?
You miss it?

There's so much to look at.
I almost can't even breathe.

Is this a net? Yes or no?

-Yes, a whole net.
-It's a trampoline.

[Luis] I think it's a lounging net.

-That's the staircase.
-[Megan] Is that a secret door?

[Luis] It is.

-Look at the staircase.
-[Megan] You go there. I'll go here.

-Oh my God, it spins.
-[Jo gasps] Oh!

-Oh, my... Double sinks.
-[Megan] Baby!

This takes natural design
to another level.

-[Megan] Absolutely.
-[Jo] I don't even talk about design.

That's your job, but I'm inspired.

Like, do I want to become a designer?
Maybe, after seeing this.

Honestly, yeah, I think this would change
people's perspective on everything.

Because if you see, the wall is actually
like this kind of translucent...

almost parchment, fibrous paper...

[Jo] Which lets the light in.

[Megan] Yeah, it's light filtering
but also super private at the same time.

[uplifting music playing]

[Luis] Wow.

Oh my God, that's a projector.

Whoa! Movie night?

Wow, this is great. Look at this net.

Ooh.

Yeah, this is a great lounging area.

-[Jo] I wonder where this goes.
-[Megan] Pathway to paradise.

[Jo] I love a good hidden garden feeling.

-[Megan] This is magical.
-[Jo gasps]

It's the shower!

[Megan laughing] Oh!

[Jo] Even the shower has a little hat.

Oh, it's perfect.

You're private right here
because you're covered in trees.

Shrouded in leaves.

[Luis] I love this house.

Everything, everything is so well planned.
Look at this.

-[Megan] It's a work of art.
-A work of art.

-[Jo] A masterpiece.
-[Megan] So symmetrical. The whole thing.

[Luis] Wow, Jo, this is a great choice.

-[Megan] It is amazing.
-[Luis] A great rental.

Papi, it's kind of hard. We all gotta make
a decision of who's sleeping where.

You decide. It's your property.

I'm taking one of these bedrooms.

Absolutely. I'll be in the other one.

-[Luis] Okay.
-Luis is on the net.

-[Jo] You're on the net.
-I'll figure it out. I always improvise.

-This is true.
-[Luis] Yeah.

[Jo] Megan and Luis wanted
to keep enjoying the Butterfly house,

which is cool, but the beauty about
staying in our vacation rental

is that it's not just about the house.

It's about what you get access to
by staying in the house.

So I decided to get my feet in the mud

and explore the rice terraces
with my camera.

-[camera shutter clicking]
-[Jo] Megan and Luis!

-[Megan] Okay, Jo, we see you.
-[Luis chuckles]

[Jo] Selamat Galungan!

[Jo, in English] Can I help?

This is crazy.

-For rice, right?
-Yes.

[Jo] Okay, I know I brought us here
to experience the festival tomorrow,

but this is such an amazing surprise
right outside the front door.

This is beautiful.

I would've not seen this
if I stayed up there.

[upbeat music playing]

[night chirping]

[Jo] This is like a fun house.

Look how grand the mosquito net is.

It's a palace here.

[Megan]
It's like a whole 'nother room in here.

[Jo] Okay, let's get some rest

because we can't forget
that tomorrow is Galungan Day.

[Megan] Yes!

[birds chirping]

The sound of paradise.

This is where we slept last night.

Today's Galungan Day,

the biggest religious day

So we are putting on

[Megan] Selamat Galungan.

-Happy Galungan.

-Protects the mind, positive thinking.

[Luis and Made] Yes.

We go to the temple, bring the offering.
This is the offering here.

This is great.

So now they're trying to cleanse
the mind and the body.

[Jo] See, this is why I look for
a vacation rental with a great host.

Made brings his guests
inside of Balinese culture.

We became a part of their community.

[relaxing music playing]

[Megan] That was amazing.

This is such an incredible day.
I can't even find the words to explain it.

It's just a feeling.

Not a lot of people
get to experience this on vacation.

-That's for sure.
-Especially not in a hotel.

getting this at a hotel?

[Luis] Well, I-I ordered something
for you guys.

-[Megan] What?
-[Luis] Some breakfast.

-[Megan] Oh my gosh.
-[Jo gasps]

Luis, I've never seen this.
This is so extra. I love it.

-So pretty. Look at this.
-Oh my gosh.

Now we have breakfast on the water.

-Where do you want to sit?
-[Jo laughing] There.

-This is amazing.
-I can't make a decision.

Okay, so hold on. You sit there,
you sit here, and I sit here.

Have you ever seen
something like this before?

-We move closer to the ocean?
-Yes.

-I got you.
-It's so cool-looking.

Oh, wow!

-Okay, now it's breakfast.
-This is so perfect.

-This is here.
-[Jo] Cheers.

-Okay.
-[Jo] This is an absurd breakfast.

[Jo] The pool is the heart of the house,
and you can't forget your tools.

The thing about the Noku House
is they have stations.

Here you've got your body lotion,
sunblock, sanitizer, and bug spray.

This is just one of many stations
throughout the property

that has these essential things

custom-made
so you don't have to pack anything.

And they even have hats

so you can take your photo
and look like you packed this.

I didn't pack this hat.

Hi!

♪ This is gonna be an all-night... ♪

How you doing? Nice to meet you.
Thanks for coming.

Pleasure.

[Luis] We couldn't really experience
what Noku Beach House is

without hosting a party.

This is something you cannot do
with traditional hotels.

I called one of my childhood friends
that happens to live in the area,

to invite some people over. This is
what properties like this are meant for,

entertaining large numbers of people.

So to keep it to ourselves
would be a total waste.

[Luis]
What do you think of the house? Nice?

[woman] Yeah, it's super nice.

I'm gonna say that you are very lucky
to live on such a beautiful island.

Because this is spectacular, you know?

And everybody just, uh, enjoys
the simplest things of life,

and I think that's one of the things
that I appreciate and admire the most.

So thank you for welcoming us here,

[Jo] Bali was an unforgettable trip,
every single part of it.

My favorite property
was definitely Camaya

because you weren't just
in the middle of nature.

You were living inside of it.

[Luis] Yep, Camaya was my favorite
property because it transformed me.

But the best value for me goes to Firefly.

Because you get an experience,

you get a community,
you get incredible food.

It just checks all the boxes.

[Megan] My favorite property
was Noku Beach House.

I love the design, I love the service,

and a stay like this
makes me feel the most relaxed.

We really saw the best of Bali,
and that's what we came here to do.
