Frantz (2016) - full transcript

In 1919 Quedlinburg, Germany, a young woman named Anna is still mourning the death of her fiance, Frantz Hoffmeister, in the Great War while living with his equally devastated parents. One day, a mysterious Frenchman, Adrien Rivoire, comes to town both to pay his respects to Frantz's grave and to contact that soldier's parents. Although it is difficult for both sides with the bitterness of Germany's defeat, Adrian explains that he knew Frantz and gradually he wins Anna and the Hoffmeisters' hearts as he tries to connect with them. Unfortunately, Adrien and Anna discover the truth of his motives and things seem shattered for all. However, when Adrien leaves, Anna has her own struggles with the truth and her feelings until she sets out to find Adrien in France. With that, Anna has her own journey to make in more than one sense, even as they both realize that neither have easy answers to their complex personal conflicts with each other and the dead man linking them.

The first time.

And also the last time?

The last time?

The last time

I saw...

I was happy?

"Happy"...

Happy.

It was in Paris?

Before the war?

Yes.

It was in Paris.

I went looking for his hotel,

to go to the Louvre.

Between friends.

It was a beautiful day.

I was happy to see the pictures.

And I also.

Y...

we stopped in front of the paintings of Manet.

Memory,

I remember... he liked one in particular.

The painting

of a pale young man,

He heads back.

Tonight, it was as if Frantz had returned.

God bless you.

Thank you.

Thanks for this night.

Les has made you well. Come.

No al Sr. Hoffmeister.

Yes.

It's good of you to come.

I do not know.

Goodnight.

Good night, Adrien.

Here lies Frantz Hoffmeister

Under these flowers, nothing.

Nothing?

He was buried in France,

anonymously among other soldiers.

We know the date of his death.

Sometimes, I think it is not dead,

it will return.

I'm sure he hears us.

The long sobs

Autumn violins

Hurt my heart from a monotonous languor

Completely flushed and pale

When the hour strikes,

I remember

Past days

And I cry

And I go

With the bad wind

Which brings me here, there

Like dead leaf

Has

a beautiful accent.

I often spoke in French.

It was our secret language.

Frantz so loved France.

But he never told me about you.

What was between you?

A woman?

No...

So what?

A...

A friendship, that's all.

I had forgotten this.

Wind noise among the leaves...

It is for that noise that I love spring.

Are you often here?

Yes.

It was here that Frantz asked for my hand...

before leaving for the war.

And how did you meet?

You never told him?

No.

It was in a bookstore while we were students.

He was looking for a book of French poems.

And I, a book of German poems.

He asked me what my favorite poet.

I said, "Ruckert".

He replied, "Verlaine".

He could have told me.

She was jealous of his studies in France.

I would have liked him, but...

I'd rather be alone,

far from home

and his family.

He said he would return there on honeymoon.

I would discover Paris,

the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, tower

Great Boulevards...

I'm hot!

You do not want to go swimming?

We do not have swimwear.

It matters little.

It matters little. Come on.

Friend.

Ah! It feels good!

You should take a bath.

It's just... I can not swim.

Oh no?

It is easy. I'll show you.

Those are

war wounds?

Yes.

He has suffered a lot.

My only injury is Frantz.

He looks like him.

Do not you believe it?

Not physically,

but by their character.

Shy and tormented.

I'm glad you're here.

Do you have brothers and sisters?

No.

I would have loved to have a brother.

And his parents?

My father died when I was a child.

My mother took over the farm after his death,

but with the war, it was complicated.

What his father did?

Business.

Above all he was a musician.

He conveyed his passion.

I was in the conservatory

and then I became a violinist in...

the Orchestre de Paris.

Now, after the war,

I can not anymore.

You do not want to play anymore?

No longer I understand the notes.

Often,

Frantz played the violin for us.

It was not a great musician,

but he played with all their heart.

Your room.

It is just as he left it.

Their books,

his folded clothes in the closet.

Frantz must have been happy here.

Yes.

But everything is broken.

I forced myself

to enlist.

I sent into battle.

It was his duty.

Serve our country.

Me too I was told.

Is

As the heart of my son.

I GET IT

the French.

No.

You can say, an old German gave it to me.

I can not.

It is the last photo of Frantz.

The next day, he left for the front.

Frantz hated war.

Daily said that the French were his brothers.

Detente ago.

Read it aloud.

"Dear Parents,

I would love to escape,

be close to you,

away from this chaos.

This morning, we were in front of a soldier killed

and as if we had been opened eyes,

We discovered a sea of corpses.

¿French,

Germans,

how do I know?

In school, children learn French German

and Germans learn French.

And when they grow up, they kill."

I have to go. Thanks for everything.

Before you leave,

a favor, I beg you.

Anna.

Play something for us.

Do not be afraid to make us happy.

It's okay?

Yes.

It must have taken cold in the lake.

¿Frantz was a pacifist?

I did not know, I did not know it?

I regret that shocked.

It's nothing, I was like him.

- It's better?
- Yes.

See you tomorrow?

Why, Anna? It does not make any sense.

Yes, you will do well.

And me too.

So... how about if we go tomorrow to the dance?

- To the dance?
- Yes.

I saw a poster. I...

- I told you...
- Okay.

You are beautiful, Anna.

You look perfectly.

- For real?
- Yes.

A Frantz would like.

It is absolutely lovely.

But, do not repeat,

It is a French model

coming from Paris.

Thank you.

It's French.

What are you doing here?

It is not a good idea, Anna.

Do not worry.

I'm here.

Come.

Oh no, no. I...

You do not know waltz?

No. Rather, yes. But no.

Come.

No,

Anna...

¿Goes well?

Thank you.

You want to dance with us?

Yes.

Well, you do not have the heart to dance...

But they were convinced.

He's a friend of Frantz.

Yes. A French.

And so?

A French today,

in a German party.

Do not you read the papers?

The war is over.

You should be ashamed.

I wanted to propose this dance.

I see no worth.

Tenga.

- Take my jacket.
- Thank you.

I've never drunk so much.

I've never danced so much.

A Frantz loved to dance.

But he was not as successful as you.

If he had returned, so he would have had.

No.

Why do you say that?

I would have married him and would have watched.

I understand they were friends.

Your jacket.

Oh yeah.

Thank you.

Thanks to you.

Goodnight.

Goodnight.

Shit.

Can I help you?

You will better?

It's okay?

In touch me, me of disgust.

"Queried Anna,

"I must...

"this letter.

"It is necessary

"I tell ..."

He believed that our meetings no longer interested him, Dr. Hoffmeister.

More than ever.

It is a good idea.

We are responsible.

And when are our children who have been killed,

they have celebrated their victory

drinking wine.

We are parents who drink by the death of our children.

He was waiting.

I had hope.

Why not come to dinner? Why did not you call?

Yes, you're right.

It makes them suffer.

This has to stop! Frantz...

I...

This comedy!

What comedy?

Franco-German friendship...

I have to confess the truth.

¿Confess what?

"The noise is tremendous.

"You can not imagine.

"The battle be terrible.

"Not all sleep. Maybe I can get out.

"I pocketed, in my heart,

"The rose you sent me ..."

How do you know this letter?

It was on September 15.

On September 15, 1918.

My regiment camped beside Dormans, in Marne.

That day, we had raised us like other days.

We cross the countryside,

making recognition calm.

Suddenly, in a field, the assault occurred.

Some of us were made immediately.

So I ran.

I ran to a trench to seek refuge.

Take refuge!

¡Help!

Suddenly, I found myself facing a man.

He, a German soldier.

I, a French soldier.

His gaze was so huge, so hopeless.

I never know if I expressed the sadness of death

or pity to see me kill him.

So I fired.

I shot first and he fell.

It was I who killed Frantz, Anna.

Not you.

If at least he had shot,

if I had hurt, but...

His gun was not even loaded.

It was not defended.

Then he dropped a projectile and I was thrown to his side.

Our two bodies,

against each other.

He...

dead.

And I live.

Among his clothes, he had a letter.

I read it.

Since then he is...

engraved in me.

That letter...

It was for you, Anna.

Why did you come here?

To apologize.

To break free.

To know the man he had killed.

Since my arrival

I wanted to tell the truth, but I saw in his grave.

You believed in our friendship. And I did not dare disappoint.

Thanks to this lie, I found out who was Frantz.

Your family, your home...

his girlfriend.

Every day, she loved him a little more.

Every day, my suffering was bigger.

So,

the Louvre,

Manet's paintings,

violin lessons...

Do we have you lied?

Yes.

Because I'm a coward.

And maybe because we did well, everyone.

Anna, wait.

My train leaves tomorrow at noon.

I will tell all before.

See you tomorrow.

Good Morning.

Good morning, Mr. Rivoire.

The check, please.

Immediately.

He went home to meet the Hoffmeister.

It's useless. I told them everything.

And how did they react?

As parents.

You do not want to see me anymore?

So is.

I understand them.

Bye.

6. wagon good trip.

Do you think I can write?

I don't believe.

Anna...

I need to write.

Then, write to me directly to my name.

I'll read them your letter.

You're right.

Thanks for everything, Anna.

Bye.

Anna.

Have you sent a kiss from us?

Yes.

I hope your mother is not too sick.

Have you said that we would love to return to play the violin?

Yes, I said.

And when did you return?

That depends on his mother and his work.

Surely soon. In two or three months.

Perfect.

To the table.

He could have come to say goodbye to us.

He apologized.

All is forgiven youth.

My dear Anna.

I write this letter in French,

so that my parents can not read it.

I hope you get it. I write in the cold and mud.

At any time, the assault may occur.

The noise is tremendous.

You can not imagine.

The battle be terrible.

Not all sleep.

Maybe I can get out.

I keep in a pocket, in my heart,

the rose you sent me in your last letter.

Promise me, dear Anna,

if I happen a disgrace,

you retain your joy of living and being happy.

Why did you do it?

There's enough dead in this war.

Do you live in the house of Dr. Hoffmeister?

Do not say anything.

Still a little fever.

You must eat.

It is hot.

I'm not hungry.

You've always had a good appetite.

The bookseller has received the book

you were in charge.

Thank you, Magda.

Some fresh air.

Anna.

When Frantz died,

you you held us

and helped us survive.

Now it's our turn.

But you have to get up,

you must leave,

you must live.

I have something for you.

What?

- I'll be back.
- Yes.

Sorry.

- What happens?
- A letter from Paris.

At last.

"Dear Anna,

I write, as promised, a few weeks after my departure.

My return to France was difficult.

But I try to survive.

Enclosed is my letter to parents of Frantz,

which, I know, you can not delete my crime,

but it will help you understand my presence among you.

I know that forgiveness is impossible.

I beg you, answer me. I hope your letter, Anna."

"Since my return,

I took care of my mother.

She is better.

I told my wonderful stay close to you,

Frantz dear family.

In Paris, life resumes.

Each one tries to forget the suffering of war.

I'm happy to be back playing with the Orchestre de Paris.

Music soothes me...

Music soothes me

and it makes me happier.

We're a few months on tour.

As soon as I can, I will go to see them.

I promise to Dr. Hoffmeister back to fiddling Frantz.

Dear friends, I hope you are well.

I miss, like the pure air of Quedlinburg.

See you soon,

Adrien."

Do we have read everything?

Yes.

We received your letter well.

Y...

You know my lies

and all my torments.

God understands you, my child.

He condemns lying,

but your silence about the death of your boyfriend

has a pure intention, that excuse your lack.

Should not I say anything?

What would bring the truth?

More pain,

more tears.

What do you feel you by the young French?

I do not know anymore.

He killed the man I loved.

This French soldier

He came to Germany

to apologize.

Forgive him.

As Jesus forgave his executioners.

I give you absolution, my child.

In the Name of the Father and of the Son

and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Amen.

Good morning, Anna.

Good morning, Mr. Kreutz.

You're good?

Yes thanks.

They told me you were sick.

It happened.

I'm glad.

I behaved stupidly.

Many Germans have died in France

I I took the first Frenchman to wine.

I know.

I do not share the ideas of Dr. Hoffmeister,

but he had a brave attitude to welcome a French

I could have killed his son.

Forgive me talk about this again.

I know how much you loved Frantz.

I met this afternoon with Kreutz.

Y?

He returned to ask for my hand.

It is tenacious.

And if I said yes?

Do you want to marry him?

It was the desire of you.

Before meeting Adrien.

Dear Adrien.

Forgive me for waiting for answer.

Our pain is still deep.

But we know that you are, as Frantz,

a victim of this horrible war.

You had to kill an enemy in wartime.

You have fulfilled your duty to French soldier.

Today,

I can understand and accept your lie.

The French.

Autumn is a beautiful season and are ready to see you.

Please write and be sure that this time,

I will answer very soon.

Yours, Anna.

Yes?

Return to Sender?

Not in this direction.

You have another?

No.

Then you must find and Adrien found us.

It is impossible, Magda.

You know your name,

your old address.

You'll find it.

But if something had happened?

It is better to know.

You can not live with doubt.

Anna...

You are young and beautiful,

You have life ahead.

Do not miss your chance, travels to France

and bring it with us.

Good trip, Anna.

I also.

For real?

I did not want to suffer anymore,

nor be unhappy,

but...

I was selfish.

Yes.

You also have to live for others.

Anna, She’s Fanny.

- Good morning, Anna.
- Good Morning.

Nice to meet you.

Adrien told me very beautiful things about you.

You will hear tonight, Anna.

Fanny has a wonderful voice.

Exaggerate.

But, Fanny, sing divinely.

Not so, Adrien?

Yes, that's true.

Good. Your room is ready, Anna.

Felicie will accompany. It is on the first floor.

Here's your room, miss.

Thank you.

Ahead.

Excuse me... did not I bother?

No... I was ordering my stuff.

Precisely, I wondered if you would need some clothes for dinner.

I guess you had not scheduled the meeting tonight.

We have almost the same size.

It's perfect.

You're going great.

I'll help with the belt.

Yes.

Thank you.

Thank you, Anna...

for all you have done for Adrien.

I did nothing.

Yes. You have received it,

thou hast heard,

when You could have refused.

His whole family thought Adrien had lost his mind.

I was the one who supported him when he decided to go to Germany.

He wanted to be forgiven,

take the place of the man he had killed.

But...

these things are impossible.

It never replace a loved one, is not it?

I do not know.

Your boyfriend called Frantz?

Yes.

My brother's name was Francois.

He was 20 years and...

He died at the front, too.

Adrien told me that you played

the piano very well.

Yes a little bit.

So you accompany us tonight?

The bells rang all day, they did not stop more.

Even the deaf heard them.

It was maddening. We wondered if we could sleep.

And we have not slept.

You had to have worn cotton in their ears.

And you, Adrien, were you

- in Paris on Armistice Day?
- Yes... In the house of fools.

And you, Anna?

How was it in Germany?

How dare you ask that question?

Excuse me, I messed up.

But it is also interesting to know, right?

The bells also rang.

We feel relieved...

and even there was

Who danced.

You see, Fanny,

It was not only in France

- it was danced.
- Yes...

On the corpses.

Does anyone eat cheese?

- With pleasure.
- Ah...

Armand, cheese, please.

Night of Stars

Under the sails

In the breeze

And their perfumes

sad lira

sighing

Dream

Over the past loves

Dream

Over the past loves

The serene melancholy

Wake up in the bottom of my heart

And I listen

The soul of my love

Shivering in the forest dream

Sorry.

I can not.

Excuse her,

the long journey has fatigued.

Go with her.

What came to do in France?

View Adrien, I guess.

Anna, what are you doing?

He should never have come.

Why do you say that?

I'm not on my site.

I also would not have been able to play against the Hoffmeister.

Did you think Frantz?

Is that?

No.

No, I did not think Frantz.

Thought you, Adrien.

In Myself?

Then you have not understood anything.

Anna... Anna. Wait. Anna, be calm.

Where will you sleep tonight?

Stay. Go away early tomorrow morning, if you want.

Nobody has anything against you.

I explain to them that...

I...

Forgive me, Anna.

You're right.

Do as you want.

Good night, Anna.

Do you the accompany?

Yes.

- Fanny said nothing?
- Do not.

Are not you jealous?

It has no reason to be.

Why did you come here?

I've already said that Anna came here of his own volition.

Do not make fun of me. I was not born yesterday.

She came to...

To say he had forgiven me. That's it.

What innocence! What naivety!

That's why I adore.

- Do not touch me.
- Adrien...

My dear...

Anna... Are you ready?.

- Yes very good.

I'll get the car.

You know, Anna,

my son is a fragile boy.

Not to make him suffer.

Not me who is hurting your child, ma'am.

It Frantz.

Thank you.

When did you know Fanny?

Since our childhood.

We stopped seeing each other when I went to Paris.

And when I returned from the front,

we met again.

She helped me a lot.

She too

- He has lost family.
- His brother?

Yes.

I loved his brother.

You know, Anna...

She is my mother who wants this marriage.

It reassures.

Fanny…

She has courage. I love forever.

Dime...

Would you accept to come to our wedding, in a month?

Fanny and I...

We would be very happy.

I don't believe.

Paris Express will leave. Close the doors, please.

Anna...

It's too late.

I am happy, Anna.

¿Hans?

Yes?

Una carta de Anna.

- ¿Anna?
- Yes.

"Dear Parents

I am writing from Paris

where I finally found Adrien.

He's fine

and send them a kiss.

He is now the first violin

the Orchestre de Paris,

and every night I go to the opera

to hear it.

For private concerts,

sometimes he asks me to accompany the piano.

We spent wonderful moments,

I did go Paris

and all sites

of which Frantz had told us.

Yesterday at the Louvre,

Manet saw the box.

I would love to

you were here

to share these moments.

I do not know when to come back,

I am happy in Paris,

in the city

Frantz loved.

Beware.

Beware.

All my Love,

Anna."

Do you also love this picture?

Yes...

He made me want to live.
